I suppose the proper place would be /usr/src, but I've usually just left
the source directories in /root (or, sometimes, in /home/danb/src).
If you're in /root, and you unpack the tarball, you'll probably
place all of its contents in /root/tinyfugue-1.2.3. The make
install script will place the binaries where they need to go.

That's WAY too messy for me! I'll go with /usr/src/, unless anyone
objects.

[newbie] Multiple CPU (2 Celerons or one Pent-3)

1999-09-06 Thread Aaron deRozario

As a newbie there are a lot of things about Linux and computers in general
that I do not yet understand - please bear with me.

I have a query about the pros and cons of running multiple processors. I
don't know about anywhere else in the world but in Australia the new Abit
dual-Celeron boards have hit the shelves. The price for one of these boards
packing 2 Celeron-400 processors is considerable less than that for a
Pentium 3 - 550 with board.

Now I understand that not all programmes work with multiple-processors,
however I understand that in a multiple-processor setup one program may be
run on processor A, while another is being dealt with by processor B. No
doubt this is a major over-simplification.

I therefore have a myriad of questions.

1) What standard Linux programmes take advantage of multiple-processors
(ie GIMP, X-Windows, KDE)
2) Do productivity suites benefit from multiple processors? If I am
running Applix and have several seriously big spreadsheets, a couple of
word-processing documents, etc will there be an increase in performance over
a single processor - or will performance be negligible?
3) Do programmes such as Blender take advbantage of multiple CPU's (not
that I've used it yet but I would like to play with it a bit)
4) Would a dual-Celeron setup give me an overall better performance
than the more expensive Pent-III? How noticeable would it be, and to what
use is a multiple CPU system best put?

I am starting to use a hard-disk recording system called Slab. This program
allows the various processses of recording, mixing, FX processing and GUI to
be distributed over several CPU's, yielding a performance increase. The
author (Nick Copeland) said that this setup has not been tested on a
multiple CPU system - so don't get one just to run Slab.

As I am potentially in the market for a new system if I can get better
performance from dual-Celerons on other programmes I run, I may as well save
the money and impress my friends running Win98 with a system that really
rocks.

On a side note the new Abit board comes with DMA-66 controllers. IF I
purchased a DMA-66 enabled hard drive and a DMA-66 m/board will Linux run
okay? I think DMA-66 is not scheduled until 2.4. Could I set the board for
DMA-33 until 2.4 is released?

Re: [newbie] Multiple CPU (2 Celerons or one Pent-3)

Even NT on it's own won't necessarily guarantee dual processor working, it
all depends on the software. Games would probably not use dual processors,
whereas graphics packages, the most common area for multiple CPU's, would.

Since you're on a Linux board, I would add that Linux or any Unix derivative
will give you the dual processor power you're after with minimal effort, and
that would also include stuff running on them, like Quake or similar.

The one other thing I would say is that dual processors aren't usually
better. If you imagine that they are both sharing a 66Mhz bus (only the
brand new Celerons are 100Mhz, and you're back to paying a premium), whereas
a P3 would use a 100Mhz on it's own, you can start to see the bottlenecks.
Multiple processing also works better with SCSI than IDE, as SCSI can handle
multiple requests better. See if you can find an online benchmark test, you
may be surprised. I found one which was next to useless, it used 3d Studio
max to benchmark, but at least it demonstrates the lack of support for dual
processors.

When you unpack it using the method I gave previously, it will
typically create a directory packagename. For example, I
downloaded seti@home as
"setiathome-1.1.i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1.tar" When I unpack it,
it creates a directory
"setiathome-1.1.i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1" IF it were something
that would need to be compiled instead of just being a tarball
distribution, you would then go into the directory and run make
config, make, and make install, followed by make clean. That SHOULD
put the binary where the author wants it to go, although if you want
it in a particular place, I suppose you could edit the source code
and tell it where to go (IMNSHO this would be a good idea for
anything you get off kde.org if using RedHat, Mandrake or any other
distro that puts KDE stuff in /usr, as KDE stuff defaults to /opt/kde
which doesn't exist in Mandrake6 or RedHat 6.)
As far as making a directory...yes. I'd suggest just a "raw storage"
directory for stuff you download and intend to use. That way, if for
some reason, you have to reinstall the package, you don't have to
re-download it.
Typically, as I said, when you get a "tarball" it will tell you where
it wants to go when you compile it. If not, unpack it, read the
included "README" file (or similar) and see what it says! :-)

Well, you might want to make about 3 partitionsone for /home, one
for /usr and one for /. That way, if you have to reinstall, /home
MIGHT be able to be spared a reformat. And if you have a separate "/"

In some spots, yes. In others, you're letting filesystem issues cloud
your suggestions.

The only reason for splitting partitions into /usr /var /tmp etc, is to
position them on different disks for performance. If you have only one disk,
you won't see any performance difference between one huge / and lots of
smaller partitions. I don't know of any safety implications, but if you get
a fault on a drive, it takes the drive out or a platter out, not a
partition, so you would still lose everything.

Agree.

There are other restrictions though. The first is the 2 Gig one. Any
partitions greater than 2 Gig need to be split. Our common layout here is
/u01, /u02 etc, with the first 2 Gig being given to /. (Please, no flames
from Linux users saying this is wrong, I don't know how close Linux and Unix
are, but at least this post should put people in the right direction).

There is no 2G limitation on ext2fs filesystems. File SIZE is limited
to roughly 2G though.

The next one is swap. Linux can only use 128Meg of swap in one file, larger
swaps require multiple partitions. If you do have 256Meg though, it will
take a serious load to get it to use swap!!!

Not true as of 2.2.x kernels, swap partitions may be as large as you'd
like to make them.

And the final one is /boot. The restriction for this is it has to be below
1023 cylinders. The safest thing I have seen is make it about 5 Meg, and put
it right at the beginning of the drive, before DOS/Windows/etc. PQMagic
 methinks??

/boot advice is correct. Only one question, though... Why is everyone
SO reliant on Partition Magic? I've done all sorts of evil and twisted
things with multiple OS's, strange partitioning schemes, etc and I've
never found a situation that I needed anything other than LILO and a few
docs.

linux partitions, but rather create free space, then use disk Druid

worked for me, and no more partition problems. One more thing, maybe
I'm off-base, but what is the point of a separate /root partition? It

[newbie] Virtual hosting

1999-09-06 Thread James Stewart

Hi,

What I want to do is to set up my local host so that www.britlinks.co.uk

another virtual server set up with /home/httpd/marketingworks.co.uk/ as

Re: [newbie] Multiple CPU (2 Celerons or one Pent-3)

Hi Aaron. Win98 won't run dual processors, only Linux, BeOS and NT. You
might like to check out a machine Leo Laporte is building on The Screen
Savers (www.zdtv.com ). It's got a Abit board with dual 366 Celerons
overclocked to 550 each (1.1 GHz!), that's available in the U.S.

Subject: [newbie] Multiple CPU (2 Celerons or one Pent-3)

As a newbie there are a lot of things about Linux and computers in general
that I do not yet understand - please bear with me.

I have a query about the pros and cons of running multiple processors. I
don't know about anywhere else in the world but in Australia the new Abit
dual-Celeron boards have hit the shelves. The price for one of these
boards
packing 2 Celeron-400 processors is considerable less than that for a
 Pentium 3 - 550 with board.

If I am
running Applix and have several seriously big spreadsheets, a couple of
word-processing documents, etc will there be an increase in performance
over
a single processor - or will performance be negligible?
 3) Do programmes such as Blender take advbantage of multiple CPU's (not
that I've used it yet but I would like to play with it a bit)
 4) Would a dual-Celeron setup give me an overall better performance
than the more expensive Pent-III? How noticeable would it be, and to what
use is a multiple CPU system best put?

I am starting to use a hard-disk recording system called Slab. This
program
allows the various processses of recording, mixing, FX processing and GUI
to
be distributed over several CPU's, yielding a performance increase. The
author (Nick Copeland) said that this setup has not been tested on a
multiple CPU system - so don't get one just to run Slab.

As I am potentially in the market for a new system if I can get better
performance from dual-Celerons on other programmes I run, I may as well
save
the money and impress my friends running Win98 with a system that really
 rocks.

On a side note the new Abit board comes with DMA-66 controllers. IF I
purchased a DMA-66 enabled hard drive and a DMA-66 m/board will Linux run
okay? I think DMA-66 is not scheduled until 2.4. Could I set the board
for
 DMA-33 until 2.4 is released?

1999-09-06 Thread Aaron deRozario

First of all - thanks to all of you who have replied to my original post.
It has at least given me something to think about.

Second - I should clarify a pint I made in my original post. When I said I
would "impress my friends running Win98 with a system that really rocks" I
meant my friends were running Win98 and I was running a dual-CPU Linux box
and I was doing the rocking. One comma can make so much difference to a
sentence ;-)

A few more questions.

Overclocking a Celeron - I know a lot has been written about this in a lot
of places but 1 quick question - I know overclocking voids the Intel
warranty (in fact I think running dual-Celerons voids the warranty also - I
might have read that on Slashdot) but can it actually fry the CPU, or does
it just make the system unstable? I have also read (RedHat site perhaps?)
that Linux does not take kindly to overclocked systems because it has a
faster kernal and therefore more susceptible to system timing problems. Is
this still true?

Some of you mentioned that SCSI gives a much higher performance than IDE,
especially when dealing with multiple requests. IF I have 4 IDE devices on
4 separate channels (as opposed to two), can Linux make a request to each
device concurrently? How does this differ from the way SCSI makes requests
to drives?

For PBen - SLab runs on Linux. Have a look at
http://www.llornkcor.com/SLab/SLab.html As the web site says it takes a bit
to learn. I am still very much in the learning stage at the moment. I need
a month off work so I can sit down and learn.

AFAIK linux doesnt have any preferance towards AGP or PCI cards, except it does
probe for a PCI one. The problem could be that your card isn't supported by
Linux yet or it could be something simple, like you've selected the wrong
colour depth/screen resolution. Try running XF86Setup ( you may need to
install first though)

What card are you using? If it's a voodoo or
TNT card, then you can download the drivers for these. http://glide.xxedgexx.com
for the VooDoo drivers and the x-server. I think theres info there about other
graphix cards too.

If you're in /root, and you unpack the tarball, you'll probably
place all of its contents in /root/tinyfugue-1.2.3. The make

That's WAY too messy for me! I'll go with /usr/src/, unless anyone
  objects.

I dont object, but /usr/local/src is more for that sort of thing, i
have made /usr/local/src/temp for that sort of thing.
tar achives used in the wrong manner can bugger up ones system before
 one knows it.

Yeah, that's what I meant to say.

I untarred it to /usr/local/src/tf-1.2.3 (I forget the version...) and
looked inside. I had to run sh unixmake to compile. Then it installed
/usr/local/bin and some other places. I deleted the directory and kept
the source as the original .tar.gz file (in the /usr/local/src)
directory. Now if I need to change anything, I just look there...

By the way it works well. Does anyone want it? It doesn't need X.

Yes, it will. Rather a nice feature actually. Just be careful--if

There are claims that it will shorten the life of the CPU. If you
have to bump up the voltage on the CPU the dopants, trace impurities
in the silicon that makes it an semiconductor, will migrate and
eventually kill the transistors. Then there is the problem of extra
heat created by running it at a higher clock rate. The heat in a
transistor is generated by changing states. If you change states more
times per second you will generate more heat.

I managed to get to 92MHz from 66MHz without raising the voltage
applied to the CPUs. I did stick in an extra fan in my case to
increase the air flow in my case. So it stays under 40 C in the case,
the motherboard reports the CPUs are running at about 50 C. A little
warm but not too bad. (Has anybody got KLM to work for them? I would
love to keep track of the CPU temperature in Linux.)

I haven't had any problems with Linux. Windows 2000 gave me a few
problems. So I would say that Win2k doesn't take too kindly to OC.

Some of you mentioned that SCSI gives a much higher performance than IDE,
especially when dealing with multiple requests. IF I have 4 IDE devices on
4 separate channels (as opposed to two), can Linux make a request to each
device concurrently? How does this differ from the way SCSI makes requests
to drives?

It might work but I am not the one to ask on that. From what I have
read and my experience SCSI is still better when you are hitting the
drive with multiple requests. I haven't read up on the changes made
with UDMA66. I think I read some place there were a few on the
request queue problem.

For PBen - SLab runs on Linux. Have a look at
http://www.llornkcor.com/SLab/SLab.html As the web site says it takes a bit
to learn. I am still very much in the learning stage at the moment. I need
a month off work so I can sit down and learn.

Thanks I will check it out.

try "rpm -qa | grep tcl" and "rpm -qa | grep tk" and see what the
results are (oh, and remove the quotes before issuing the commands.

are looking ONLY for the term "tcl" and then the term "tk".

That's one way to do it from the command-line...

Re: [newbie] screen res

1999-09-06 Thread Richard Salts

Hello, Alan:

I'm a newbie just like you and I think what you need to do is to go to this
website:

http://www.xfree.org/cardlist.htm

print out this list of video cards and pick one and give it a try.

This has been my experience as I had a card, a SoundBlaster 3D Banshee,
ordinarily a good card for Windows but not directly supported by Linux
unless you can download some drivers from Creative labs, install them and
all that.

What I had to do was to replace the SB 3D card with a card on the list that
was directly supported by Linux-Mandrake and that solved the video problem
for me.

Yes, the console came on just fine but the video images were very overly
large and distorted. I don't know if they appeared that way to you but you
might think about another card. But _not_just any card. By all means
consult the list above and pick from there.

Hope this helps

Richard

Subject: [newbie] screen res

hi there,
i've seen various posts about screen resolution probs (with no answer to my
particulart situation).
unfortunately, the ctrl-alt-plus does nothing. in
fact, the resolution isn't even 640x480, its some
sort of default resolution (like 240x310). i've
tried to install on two different boxes, both have
the same problem, and both have AGP video cards
(but not the same card)... is the AGP card the
problem? if it is, what's the work-around for it?
the text console runs fine and even the GUI works
correctly (what i can see of it), so this just
seems to be a video issue. any help would be
greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Re: [newbie] ethernet card setup (an add on)

Too help narrow down the program that i want, i know its not ifconfig. It had
more of a graphical interface. it let me choose my card, put in the IP and
such, and then it made everything work. I want to use my DSL in linux!

thanks once more

Run printtool as root and adjust the resolution for that printer.

This brings up another problem. I thought this would work:

  -Start rxvt
  -Type in su -c printtool
  -Enter my root password

  Alas, it doesn't:

  [andy@localhost andy]$ su -c printtool
  Password:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
  Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
Application initialization failed: couldn't connect to display ":0.0"
  Couldn't load bindings.tcl
Start from control-panel or set environment variable
CONTROL_PANEL_LIB_DIR to the control-panel library dir.
  (normally this is /usr/lib/rhs/control-panel)
  [andy@localhost andy]$

So log out of your user and log in as root. You'll only ever have to do
it once.

It's probably netcfg.

What didn't you like about Caldera? I tried it for about 2 weeks and
got disgusted with all the press releases about how "easy to use" it was
for beginners -- pure BS. Caldera seems to be just about the most
back-asswards distribution I've ever tried.

Re: [newbie] Display problems and LILO question

1999-09-06 Thread Hershel S Robinson

Matt,

Thank you for your help. I looked at the XF86Config file, but I'm not sure
exactly how to fix it.
It seems that my system is using the accelerated X server, because the
regular one doesn't have such a high res. I remember checking off 3 choices
when I installed, and 3 appear under the 'accel' section, but I'm not sure
which one to change, or change all? (I'm guessing the system uses the first
choice because it's Depth 8 and maybe that's causing problems with GIMP). I
attached the config file. If you could look at it and let me know what you
think, I would really appreciate it. (I'm sure you are also a very busy
person, but I have not found anyone else who has really offered any help.)

Also, do you know if Mandrake supports my graphics card and monitor? The
Display Adapter Type window in my NT system says I have an ATI Techologies
INC. 3D PRO TURBO (with 8 MB RAM). My monitor is a Dell 17" M770.

Thank you very much,
Hershel
