Re: [newbie] installing patch.pl

2000-04-09 Thread Vic

I think you can access that kind of disc if
you mount it ext2, unless you have tried that already,

mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Should get you into the boot floppy's filesystem.
But I don't remember where you should
dump the patch file.

On Sun, 09 Apr 2000, Tim Walker mewed:
 guys and gals,
my problem is that my usb mouse was detected as a ps/2 mouse on

 instructions for patching say

"save this file to your boot floppy making sure to keep the name
"patch.pl". Then, during installation, boot from the disk as normal but
type "linux patch" at boot prompt."

but i cannot access the boot disk i made for installation through either
win98 or linux. i made the boot disk by using 'rawwritewin' from the
dosutils dir of the mandrake 7.0-2 cd, and selecting 'cdrom.img' as the
 image.

in win98 it tells me the floppy isn't formatted. in linux when i attempt
to 'cd /mnt/floppy' or cp to it, it gives me an input/output error.

my linux /etc/fstab file is as follows:
 /dev/hda1 /mnt/DOS_hda1 vfat user,exec,conv=binary 0 0
 /dev/hda6 /mnt/DOS_hda6 vfat user,exec,conv=binary 0 0
 /dev/hda7 /mnt/DOS_hda7 vfat user,exec,conv=binary 0 0
 /dev/hda8 /mnt/DOS_hda8 vfat user,exec,conv=binary 0 0
 /dev/hda5 / ext2 defaults 1 1
 /dev/hda9 swap swap defaults 0 0
 /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
 none /proc proc defaults 0 0
 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
 /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

i have been able to access other floppies through /mnt/floppy, just not
 the boot disk.

 ideas?

RE: [newbie] dual modems

2000-04-09 Thread Mike Perry

From what I have heard the winblows98 2nd edition supports this,
and there are some 3rd party programs that also can do this in winblows
however the main problem is with your ISP.
With mine for instance I cannot logon with the same name and password
twice.
I in fact tried this, and it was quiet amuseing, I connected with one modem,
dialed the other, started to logon with the other and it connected and threw
the 1st one out which tried to reconnect, connected and threw the 2nd one
out
and so forth and so on :-)...
Also I have heard that your ISP must be setup specificly to allow this and
most of them aren't.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your comments. In the end I created a couple of linux

Thanks a lot

shouldn't need to modify your partitions at all.

If you do decide to change your partition sizes, then use the Partition

causing problems with your Windows partition.

But if someone wants to make a point form TXT file (containing the click here,

[newbie] How to get unpartitoned disk space back?

2000-04-09 Thread Jim Snyder

Hi

I just loaded Mandrake 7.0 after a few months absence from the Linux community
while relocating from California to Virginia for my job with the USDA. I ran
into a couple snags and a lock up while upgrading from a previous Mandrkae
version which I think was 6.0.

Anyway, I have a system with two hard drives, a 3.25 and 4.0 GB. The smaller HD
is on Windows 98 and larger on Mandrake Linux. I would use both for Linux
except that I need to use AutoCAD and ArcView for my job.

When I upgraded Mandrake, part of my 4 GB hard dive was not recognized due to
an oversite on my part in Disk Druid from my previous installation.

Can I get that space back? I have a good running installation and do not want
to take a chance messing it up but need the extra space for the StarOffice
installation. I am only showing 1 GB space left when I know there is about 2 GB
left. The partiton formated for Linux only registers at about 2.88 GB out of a
possible 4 GB. Also, what other things can I delete to get more disk space. I
chose to install everything during the initial install and then upgrade.

Many thanks in advance!

Sure, but why not have your boot loader do that for you. If your using
Bootmagic, or LILO, you can set Win9x as the default, but select linux when
you prefer. Much faster than a boot disk.
If you really have your heart set on using a floppy boot disk, just do an
fdisk/mbr to set the MBR back to original windows state. Then insert the boot
disk before booting when you want linux. I still think letting the bootloader
do the work is easier and faster.

It is Redhat/Mandrake-centered, and covers many aspects of getting a

[newbie] FW: Gender of Computer....

2000-04-09 Thread nodyak0

This is OFF subject but I feel all can benefit from them and enjoy a
little HUMOR.

But now I know that what I thought I knew
Isn't what I know I think I thought I knew.

- Forwarded message --

 Computer Humor

An English teacher was explaining to his students the concept of
gender
association in the English language. He stated how hurricanes at one
  time
were given feminine names and how ships and planes were usually
referred
  to
 as "she".

One of the students raised his hand and asked, "What "gender" is a
  computer"?

The teacher wasn't certain which it was, so he divided the class into
  two
groups, males in one, females in the other, and asked them to decide
if
  a
computer should be masculine or feminine. Both groups were asked to
give
 four reasons for their recommendation.

The group of women concluded that computers should be referred to in
the
 masculine gender because:
  1. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
  2. They have a lot of data but are still clueless.
  3. They are supposed to help you solve your problems, but half
the
  time
 they
  ARE the problem.
  4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that, if you had
  waited a
little longer, you could have had a better model.

The men, on the other hand, decided that computers should definitely
be
referred to in the feminine gender because:

  1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
  2. The native language they use to communicate with other
computers
  is
  incomprehensible to everyone else.
  3. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for
  later
  retrieval.
  4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself
  spending
half your paycheck on accessories for it.

  Just change the 5 to a 3

I hope the person who posted the original inquiry will try this and report
back. My impression is that the people who advise the above (not just you,
Michael) did not actually install their own Mandrake to run X automatically. I
did so, and when I wanted to discontinue the autostart, making the above change
did not have any effect. I am engaged in a long thread on the Mandrake Expert
list about this, and there is still no understanding about the cause of the
phenomenon. I got X to quit autostarting by commenting out the last line of
inittab, but that only breaks the runlevel system.

I hope no one will be offended, but this problem for me has gone on for a very
long time, and I'm tired of it. So I will only continue participating in the
investigation on the Expert list (not that I'm an expert, by any standard).

Re: [newbie] boot disk

2000-04-09 Thread Vic

Oh yes, just instead of installing lilo, make a bootdisk
with the lilo on it, and do not install lilo into your master
boot record, tell it to install it in the --- uhh whats that
called the root superblock--- instead of the master
boot record, like for example instead of making the
lilo.conf file say /dev/hda it should say /dev/hda1 for
example and so your boot record remains untouched
by lilo, instead the lilo booting is on the floppy,
and if I were you I would make 2 or 3 copies of
this floppy so in case one gets bunged up,
you will still have 2 more.

I fixed my partitions, but it took a while. the prob was using mandrake's

magic and partition magic couldn't.
here's how I fixed it. in windoze open windows explorer and got \Program

ptedit32.exe there. run it and you can see all the details of your HD
partitions :) what I had there made no sense. so I set all values to zero
for that drive. now use Part. Magic and the drive should show up as
completely free "unallocated". now you can create new partitions here or use
mandrakes utility. be careful where you place your boot info so boot magic
will work!

[newbie] Problems

2000-04-09 Thread Valjean

Some questions, maybe you folks can help:
1. The crossover question I asked earlier...any idea?
2. I have a "freshly" installed system, so no extra software has been
installed except the Mandrake 7.0 install. When I use Netscape in xwin,
it will work, then suddenly will stop. I mean the page will stay on the
screen but when you click on a link, nothing happens. It just stays
there. Shut Netscape down, and then try to bring it back up, and nothing
happens, it merely "shrugs off" the attempt.
Now, if I bring up a virtual terminal and look in the .netscape
directory, there is a blinking file called lock. Delete this and netscape
loads fine. Ideas, thoughts?
3. I have one 8.5 gig hd and one cdrom. I want to hook up two more hard
drives, copy some data from them, and then remove them from the system.
How do I get Linux to recognize them so I can copy, then remove them from
the system as easily?
4. One final problem: I am hooked to my campus ethernet network. While
running windows, I get tremendous throughput loading pages, doing ftp,
etc..now in netscape in linux, I am getting throughput no higher than
3.5k/sec and then it starts dropping, and stalls out..goes back up to
3.5/3.6 and drops slowly to 3.0, 2.9,2.8..etc then stalls out..
any ideas?

Thanks Valjean

needs to be setup on the linux machine. (Currently the linux box is

[newbie] (Repost) How to avoid starting X for laptop during the install?

2000-04-09 Thread Xavier Michalet

Hi,

I am the person who originally posted this question. I missed the original answers
because of problems with my Mac beta version of AOL :-( so I repost it:
The problem I have is that I want to install Mandrake 7 on a laptop (LCD display).
I test the settings for X windows during the installation, but when I reboot and X
starts, the display kind of "melts" (yes, this is frightening to look at). The
reason: because I have a line to edit in some file (vga = 794) to have it work.
But I can't do that without a screen, right ? That's why I'd like to boot in the
console mode.
HOWEVER, I have never been able to obtain the dialog "do want to start with X ?"
(or something similar) to answer NO during the install. As soon, as I accept the
settings for X, the installation jumps to another item (I think I have a fraction
of a second to see the question, but I don't even see the dialog window).

So, of course I can't try the suggestion below, and after 3 reinstallation and 3
screen melting, I don't dare retrying anything.
Any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance.

Xavier.

Even to permanently switch to a non X boot (which I do not believe the
original poster was looking to achieve), a reinstallation is not necessary.
 A
simple edit of /etc/inittab will change the runlevel
   id:5:initdefault

I've posted this help awhile back...
but I'll post it again...

I'm also a newbie...for about 3 months now...
but I've noticed one thing...in those three months...

Linux IS (no doubt in my mind)...the best OS there is,
outside of UNIX itself. It puts windows to shame...

The reason most of us...have trouble (at first)...
is due to not installing correctly...
granted Mandrake 7.0 and 7.02 is supposed to make this
process easierand it does. However, you first must
make sure...that all hardware is compatible.
Once this is done, if you have trouble with the UPGRADE
install option...then what you need to do...is this:

1. completely remove/re-format all linux partitons.

2. instead of doing a upgrade...do a complete re-install,
a fresh install, making new partitons...etc.
in other words, starting from scratch...

I had countless problems myself, in installing linux
the first time...until, I found this remedy...

3. If you still have problems, then it is most likely
in the CD itself...(or, whereever/whatever you installed from)
i.e. check to make sure the CD is clean from all debris, is
scratchfree, etc. I don't care what others may tell you,
a CD ...CAN and WILL mess upif not properly taken care of.

4. Try downloading the files again...if this is how you installed.

First off, you turn off the HTML in your mail composer so we can read
your cries for help...

If you can boot off your cdrom, put it in and reboot.

Otherwise, boot into Windoze and make bootdisk from one of the images on
the cd.

Once you are on your way to booting up a screen will come up asking for
any parameters to pass to the kernel.

linux root=/dev/hda1 initrd=

Use the real partition of your root of course. If your partitions have
changed (You installed another OS Maybe) you can make a "rescue" disk to
allow you to boot a small version of linux and do system mantenance such
as fdisk -l /dev/hda to look at your partition table and figure out
where linux is...

initrd=
tells it to not run the install program and it is very important to
remember to put it in...

Once you get in rerun /sbin/lilo

  -Stephen-

 I love my amd k6-2 450 ... :(

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not criticizing the AMD K6/2 - I think it was
an undersold processor. The problem was that a number of motherboard
manufacturers were apparently unwilling to throw real support behind it
and pushed boards onto the market that had not been adequately designed
and tested.

The Asus P5A motherboards, for example, were quite disastrous (I have
one, and it occasionally causes Win 98, Win NT (most recent service
pack) and on rare occasions, Linux (though so far only during install -
if I turn off UDMA support it works fine) to barf).

I was never able to get my RIVA TNT2 board to work with it, and Asus
support was stinky, stinky bad (to be fair, other motherboards built
with the Acer Labs Aladdin V chipset were equally awful). I'm a
reseller, and the tech people at my distributor told me that they were
being flooded with complaints about this board. They did a valiant job
trying to support their customers, but Asus...

As it turned out, the board was beyond rescue. Asus simply ignored
e-mail requests for support; when I finally called their technical
support number (at my expense) the response was anemic. They told me
what I already knew, then blamed my video card for my troubles.

In the end I had to return the RIVA cards I was trying to get working
with the P5A.

Asus screwed up, and they knew it. How do I know?

I recently installed an Asus RIVA TNT2 board in a customer's machine. On
the box was a big orange *sticker* featuring the text "WARNING: Not
recommended for use with ALi chipset motherboards!" -- like, for
instance, Asus' own P5A.

=)

This is a BIG reason why AMD developed its own supporting chipset for
the Athlon - after the problems with the ALi Aladdin V, they knew they
could not rely on third party manufacturers to reliably support the new
flagship processor.

Incredibly, Asus hasn't learned from experience. The K7M has a mixed PCI
bridge - AMD North, VIA South -- and they're unstable in ANY OS you try
and run on them.

I called my distributor after problems with my last K7M system, and they
told me to send it back and get a Gigabyte (all AMD bridge) instead.

Hardware *does* matter.

The problem I have is that I want to install Mandrake 7 on a laptop (LCD
display).
I test the settings for X windows during the installation, but when I reboot
and X
starts, the display kind of "melts" (yes, this is frightening to look at).
The
reason: because I have a line to edit in some file (vga = 794) to have it
work.
But I can't do that without a screen, right ? That's why I'd like to boot in
the
 console mode.
HOWEVER, I have never been able to obtain the dialog "do want to start with
X ?"
(or something similar) to answer NO during the install. As soon, as I accept
the
settings for X, the installation jumps to another item (I think I have a
fraction
of a second to see the question, but I don't even see the dialog window).

So, of course I can't try the suggestion below, and after 3 reinstallation
and 3
screen melting, I don't dare retrying anything.
 Any suggestions ?

 Thanks in advance.

Anyway, I decided to try changing default runlevels on my system

  Goodluck and God bless

It's not possible. The qmail license requires distribution in source
code format only. No precompiled binaries are allowed. (Unless it
changed recently.)

If you compile it, though, it does work. We install qmail on all the
systems here, and it's fine. If you want to use procmail with qmail you
have to mess around with procmail and compile a custom version. If you
don't need/want procmail then there's no issue.

   Goodluck and God bless
