Re: [newbie] GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION
As I have mentioned elsewhere in newbie, I have just installed a couple of other "flavors" of Linux. It helps one appreciate Linux-Mandrake. One can begin doing things more quickly with what Mandrake has put on the desktop. I suggest, have RPMDrake ask if you want a desktop icon created during install of RPMs, especially for such major programs as Word Perfect or Star Office. Supply easy to find (that is, easy for a disoriented beginner) information about adding and removing desktop icons. The sooner one can be productive the more pleased with Mandrake they are likely to be. An excellent feature, for instance, is RPMDrake. But a little improvement would help some people. When I have used it, I have occasionally gotten an "install failed" message, followed by an "OK" box. This is not helpful. A useful message would be good, perhaps naming an error-log file. The RPM program is removed from the list of RPMs not yet installed (and not replaced), so trying to install it again is involved when it ought to be simple. I have (re)installed Mandrake many times (it gives a known starting place for traceing problems) and I think I was rushing through the RPM installs: it hadn't completed one install and I was feeding it the next, and it choked, a mistake a rank beginner wouldn't make. Usually beginners make mistakes experienced people wouldn't make, and trying to think of all of the possibilities (for error trapping) is the problem. Re: [newbie] DISCUSSION POINTS:
The install routine should give basic info such as how many partitions ( of what names) the install will create and that one is very unlikely to get the exact size they specify for any user-created partitions due to the way hard drives allocate space (i.e. the hard drive will determine the exact size, but that one can go back and jiggle the numbers before writing the partitions. For the first time I have installed some different "flavors" of Linux. This is a good idea, it helps one appreciate how good Mandrake is. One has to search the CD documents to know what is going to be done, or has been done about something when there is no information in the install about a topic, as is often the case (Caldera puts LILO at the head of the partition rather than in the MBR without ever telling you in the install, but the intro to KDE within KDE is a nice idea). Everyone presumes information that needs to be explicit for a newbie. AND it is very inconvenient to try to find the answer to a question while in the middle of an install when one suddenly discoveres that one needs to know something. Yet I know that you also need to provide "up front" information that someone more experienced would need, without troubling them with all the newbie stuff. That's why I have suggested a "more info" button, but I would like to suggest that it be tied to the on disc info. I know trying to run an HTML browser from within the install is very likely impractical. At any rate, help info should be a "help" directory on the CD with information by topic, one file for each specific topic so that you can go to just where your question is going to be answered with a minimum of effort. Maybe with an overview of the whole process links to the individual subjects for people needing details. -Gary Prichard- On 5/27 [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ralph F. But people ARE going to download Mandrake (or use free" discs from magazines, etc.) and if they have trouble they will summarily dismiss Mandrake as being "no good" when a retail package might have or be just what they need. Re: [newbie] GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION: Security
I agree with Joseph S. Gardner's comment (below). A firewall as part of the initial installation of Linux-Mandrake (even for a newbie) is a good idea. Some people will have cable modems and other things that are on all the time and thus have a need for a firewall before they know it or know enough to try to put one in. -Gary- Anthony Huereca wrote: I don't have M7.0 yet, but I like the idea of the different security zones. One of the main complaints I've heard on this mailing list is lack of desciption of what the different zones actually do. So tell the user what exactly is happening when you select a certain level. Or maybe, have like a checklist, where the user can pick and choose what exactly they want to do. That would be cool. Keep it simple (like 5 levels) for the avearage person, but let the expert pick and choose. And include some sample firewalls or something like that. Somethign that would be useful to the average Dial-up (or cable modem in my case) person, who doesn't need a lot of exceptions like for a FTP or web server, but just needs a good regular firewall. That way the user doesn't have to figure out all the ipchaining rules and stuff; which at the moment totally loses me everytime I try to read through the how-to. Re: [newbie] Command execution
Barry, in command line terms the . is the functional equivalent of "this directory". The / means the root or main directory off of that indicated. So in effect the ./means the root of the current directory. IN simple terms, it means the directory you are in! The reason you do this is because the program you are executing is not identified as being in the path so you have to rely on your command line arguments to tell the computer where the program you are executing resides. Re: [newbie] GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION
Let me be clear, I'm not complaining, rather I'm using my experiences and expectations to make a point. Poor support makes Mandrake look bad. I have been trying to get a sound configuration failure solved over two weeks and find Linuxcare to be nearly useless. They assume no reply in 48 hours means the problem is solved. Well, I'm learning Linux in my "spare time", let alone that I don't get to my mail that consistently. But the real problem seems to be that when I e-mail a reply to their proposed solution, referencing their incident number (usually in the subject line), I am assigned a new number each time. [I do not reply on-line as they apparently expect] [Are they billing based on the number of incidents solved?] My "reply" apparently goes to a new support person each time. With the most recent proposed solution the support person asked what product I had, even though I had refered to three other incident numbers [which contained all of the product, equipment advise information] as being the same unsolved issue -- (typically?) the support person was too rushed to review the matter, too rushed to be useful! Chunking support incidents like this obviously doesn't work. When one problem takes so long to solve, and is handled so poorly, it makes Mandrake look bad. Support should also be for everything supplied in the retail package, not just the basic system install (Linuxcare support said my problem with Word Perfect and Star Office corrupting X windows was beyond the scope of the support supplied by Mandrake-followed by an ad for paid support). [Given the support I have experienced I certainly don't want to purchase support from them.] I bought Mandrake because I wanted to accomplish something, I was not buying "a new life" trying to make this work. Since these programs were both mentioned as "features" on the box (and both enclosed) it seems reasonable that if I have a problem getting them set up support for that should be included. -Gary Prichard-

Make Both fred and tom member of this new group (by adding "fred, tom" to the entry fredandtom in the /etc/group file). Then make the fredandtom group the owner of /home/shared (chgrp fredandtom /home/shared). From now on, the files in /home/shared whose group is fredandtom and are group writable (chmod g+w file) will be accessible to both tom and fred. When you ask your shell to execute a command without telling him where it is, it looks for it in the directories specified in the $PATH variable ("echo $PATH" to see it). Re: [newbie] Command execution
When you type in a program to be executed, bash will search for the programs based on what's in your PATH environmental variable. If you don't have "./" in your PATH, it won't look there for the program. Just add "./" to your PATH in .bash_profile, it will fix the problem. SirI have purchased three different MacMillan packages over the last year and a half. I, in point of fact, have been very happy with each one of them, and have recommended their purchase to others. This is certainly not hostile. The only possible hint of hostility that comes from me is my dislike for your response to my earlier comments where through your response to them (my comments) you alleged that I said things that I didn't. I was and still am unhappy about that. The only thing I said prior to your messages that could be construed as hostile was the 'sheesh' after describing the MacMillan marketing strategy for the release of 6.1 by putting a large 6.5 on the box. I said, "Their excuse was that more people will purchase an upgrade sequenced by .5 than would have bought it if sequenced by only .1". It was meant to be snide, but certainly not hostile. Why was I snide? Because that marketing tactic was insulting and suggested to me that someone at MacMillan didn't think that their customers were very bright. I was sincerely hoping that MacMillan wouldn't be using it again. I guess you're not and I'm glad of that. [newbie] Installing Apps in different hd
Hi All, I would like your help, one and all, with the following so that I can have full enjoyment of my newly installed Mandrake 7. I am just really in amazement about Linux, and have come to really think it is the best thing going. I also think this distro is outstanding, KDE graphics looks better than the Mac, and it seems to run very solid. hda is assigned to windoz 2000 under Fat 32 (yes I forgot about NTFS, and made the error of trying to install LILO once by trying to install under BMR which was NTFS - it will not work, causing a complete reinstall of W2K) So, Fat 32 it is for now. BIG drawback on W2K. hdb (my slave drive) is assigned all to Mandrake. I did the standard install without changing anything. LILO works fine in MBR. All is well. Now, I want to install more Apps that I use, such as WordPerfect or Applexware, etc. - most anything I can get my hands on! However, the way the default installer laid out my HD, by partition, I seem to have very little room left in one partition. My partitions on hdb are as follows: /dev/hdb1 7.6 MB total 6 MB free (80%) /dev/hdb5 1474.6 MB Total 455.6 MB free (30%) /dev/hdb7 7790.5 MB Total and 7381 MB (94%) free It seems (I think) that Mandrake installed all the initial Apps in hdb5, so when I install the new Apps as above, or any large programs (StarOffice or Applex) how do I install them using RPM Drake to hdb7, where I have the most free disk space? Most of my free space is there. Would it be easier just to give more disk space to hdb5 by using, let's say, Partition Magic and expanding that partition to the largest one? Help would be appreciated. -- Best regards, Gary mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Today's thought: You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on.

Re: [newbie] DISCUSSION Authomatic Install
I'd have it defaulted to "yes". The expert who doesn't like non-OS programs will know to check it, whereas the average person who doesn't care about how free it is probally won't even notice the checkbox. And then they'll be mad when they boot it up the first time and can't find a browser. Another suggestion is to have Sun's StarOffice (and maybe Netscape Communicator) as checkbuttons too. Some purists are offended by the idea of having a non-open source program in their systems, whereas others want both the free speech and the free beer. Since the default for the checkbutton is "no", this could be a nice compromise between the two crowds. Cheers, /J. -- Anthony Huereca http://m3000.1wh.com Computers are not intelligent. How should I go about this? 'fred' may NOT have access to 'tom's files and 'tom' may NOT have access to 'fred's files. I intention is to create a directory named say: /home/shared or similar in which these two users can drop the exchange files. As I remember if I make both of these users members of the same group the each is able to 'see' what the other is doing? or has in her directory. That is not an option in this case.. Suggestions are most welcome. Cheers. John Put them into the "share" group (or whatevery you wanna call it). Have "root" own the directory, and "share" have read/write access to that dir. Have them only mark "read/write by group" in that folder. That may be a little vague, but it works..maybe -Jeff -- Don't you use envelopes for your e-mail too? Use PGP for your e-mail!
Re: [newbie] Install DOS 6.2 Windows98 and Linux-Mandrake 7.0 in same HD
On Wed, 31 May 2000, you wrote: Hello! The installation manuals do not say anything about the "cylinder 1024" problem. This is the /boot or /root have to be installed within the 1024th cylinder. I have Windows 98, DOS 6.2 and Linux-Mandrake 7.0 Air Version in my 13GB Quantum Fireball HD. First time I tried to install Mandrake Linux in an empty partition (after 9GB Windows partition), I got an error message in LILO installation (because /root is after cylinder 1024) and then I was not able to boot from HD (Linux and Windows). Fortunately there is a "magic" fdisk (DOS) command: fdisk /mbr that restores the MBR, and then I can boot Windows again from HD. Linux only boot from the diskete. I decided then start from the begining, because I do not have Partition Magic. I was not shure if I can use the DiskDrake to make a partition resize without destroying any data (in DOS partition). Do you know that? What I did: 1. I made one DOS FAT16 400MB partition (with dos fdisk) for DOS 6.2 and I installed it there (dos C: disk) 2. I made one DOS FAT16 16MB partition (with dos fdisk), without installing anything there (dos D: disk) 3. I made one FAT32 9GB partition (dos E: disk) (with W98 fdisk), and I installed Windows98 there. 6. I made one FAT16 1.5GB partition to put data to be shared by DOS, Linux and Windows98 After that I have deleted partion D: and make a new one smaller (6MB. I had to make a new one because Windows98 did not boot as disk D: (it has to be as disk E: as installed) The remaining space was for Linux: 7. I made 128MB swap partion 8. I made about 1.5GB for /root Then a got the 1024 error message, and created a partition after the dos D: partition, with 8MB for /boot (within cylinder 1024) Summary of partitions: hda1: DOS C: (400MB) - DOS 6.2 hda5: DOS D: (6MB)- Without data hda9: Linux /boot (8MB) hda6: DOS E: (9GB) - Windows 98 hda7: Linux /swap (128MB) hda8: Linux /root (1.5GB) With above configuration LILO was automatically installed without any questions or errors, and I can boot from HD to Linux or Windows98. If I want to boot to DOS 6.2, I make F8, after boot Windows98 and I choose "old DOS option". Everything seems to work fine, but I am shure that should be a simpler solution for that. There is on error in /hda5 because Linux can not mount it. I think that is a too small partition. Is there any suggestion to make this job simpler? Why Linux-Mandrake installation do not ask if we want to install LILO? It is not good see our MBR destroyed by a faulty LILO installation. If I am shure that DiskDrake can make a partion resise without destroying dos data, I would make the following partition: DOS c: (400MB) Linux /boot (10MB or a little more). Suggestions for the optimal size? Windows 98 D: (9GB) FAT16 E: (1.5GB) Linux /swap (128MB) Linux /root (remaining) I read a lot of installation instructions. Re: [newbie] perl terminated install
Hi Ed, I had the same problem when trying to install Mandrake 7.02 on an Athlon System. I don't know what caused it, but I think it has something to do with the length of time you take to install. My installs were also crashing during or after the partitioning segment. After the 2nd crash I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my partitions so when I got to that step I partitioned the drives quickly and moved on, and the installer didn't crash. When Mandrake code is said to be optimized for the Pentium class machines is it optimized in the source code, or does Mandrake have a "custom" compiler they use?? I notice most all the mdk stuff is labeled i586. Do they (the programmers) have to go into the source of each package and "bit fiddle" it, or is it a matter of "packaging" the code. I notice each programmer, or engineer attaches their name to the package. vern

Since the advent of Linux and the GNU compilers and such. I'm leaning toward an O'Reilly book I just purchased a PERL manual (the camel book), and would like a similar book for modern day C. Do they still use "linker" processes, and what became of a.out?? Does C still equal C, or are there "flavors" of C?? Thanks, vern

I like that better than the default "SloppyFocus", but I would like to know if there is something like "RaiseOnClick". That is how I have KDE set up, and that way works best for me. SloppyFocus only points the view to the window that the mouse is over, but does not raise it until you click the title-bar, and that is not always in sight. I hope this brings things across more clear... Re: [newbie] gcc weirdness

I don't know that much about the differences between egcs and gcc except that egcs is used by Red Hat, and gcc is used by Mandrake. So, here is the burning questionHow do I make egcs work instead of using gcc. Or am I all screwed up??? I don't know about autoconfigure thingies, but the way I would go about it is: find where the gcc executable is (which gcc), go to that directory, rename gcc to gcc_old, and make a symbolic link named gcc pointing to egcs. That should get you somewhere. Good luck! Paul )0(---)0( Wisdom is as rare as diamond )0([[EMAIL PROTECTED]]-)0( http://nlpagan.net - ICQ 147208 Registered Linux User 174403

The first one will only run on Dec-Alpha processors. I don't know how stable it is. Re: [newbie] Command execution
On Wed, 31 May 2000, Barry Winch wrote: Can someone please explain the concept behind ./ in executing a command. If I am in the directory where the programme resides and type the programme name, I get a: "bash: programme name: command not found" message If, from the same directory I type ./programme name everything works as advertised. What I know is this: programs are only executed when they are found in the search path, or when you fully qualify them /dir/dir/program. The ./ refers to the current directory, which apparently is enough qualification for Linux. One of the reasons for this is when people play around with programs that are named after existing programs/commands, e.g. ls If you want to run your own ls, you need to specify that. This can happen when someone wants to work on a development version of a system command.
