[newbie] IRC and network settings....

2000-12-16 Thread Rex Grigg

Ok, I am trying to run IRC on either my Linux box or my Windows box that
the Linux box IPMasqs for. The problem I am having is that I fail the
IDentD checks. I am wondering if this is due to my network settings. What
should I have my hostname set to??? My ISP is dsl-only.net if that helps
at all. I would really like to hear from someone that has been able to use
IRC on a IPMasq setup and has been able to get on to any of the Effnet
servers. This problem has been bugging me for several months now and I
have been unable to solve it. Any help would be appreciated very much!

[newbie] cdrecord

2000-12-16 Thread Roger Sherman

Having tons of problems burning CDs...the gui's just don't want to even
mess with me, except gtoaster, and it gives me a bunch of output messages
leading up to the countdown to burn, but it never actually burns
anything...I'd like to give cdrecord a whirl from the command line, but I
have to admit, the man page on it is beyond me. Could someone throw a
sample command as you would actually do it if you were burning a wav file
from your HD to a disc, so I could see the actual syntax as its supposed
to be? I'm hoping that makes it click for me...thanks!

[newbie] help with soundcard

2000-12-16 Thread Mickey Soltys

I have the following instructions for building a driver for my soundcard:
 .
 .
 .

STEPS TO BUILD DRIVER

  1. Backup the Config.in and Makefile in the sound driver directory
 (/usr/src/linux/driver/sound).

  2. Extract the tar file by 'tar xvzf cmpci-xx.tar.gz' in the above
 directory.

  3. Change directory to /usr/src/linux

  4. Config cm8338 driver by 'make menuconfig', 'make config' or
 'make xconfig' command.

  5. Please select Sound Card (CONFIG_SOUND=m) support and CMPCI
driver (CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI=m) as modules. Resident mode not tested.
For driver option, please refer 'DRIVER PARAMETER'

  6. Compile the kernel if necessary.

  7. Compile the modules by 'make modules'.

  8. Install the modules by 'make modules_install'

... and then some more stuff.

My problem is that I can't find the directory (/usr/src/linux/driver/sound).
This does not seem to be a part of Mandrake7.2.
Can any of you more enlightened readers tell me if the above instructions
seem reasonable?

Thanks,

Mickey Soltys

It is as you say Jim...and that is the whole problem ..everything has
to be learned at once in order to operate the system...It is so hard,
but it must be done this way...

If the curve was sloped gently, we wouldn't be able to power

just to get started...well... at the rate I am going, I will get to

I wish I could do like Roman, he has completely disassembled

[newbie] Sound card

Hi folks, I finally got KDE 2.0.1 up and running. Looks good and seems to be
very stable. So a unrelated problem: my sound card is an Asound ALS120 shows
up in windows. I had to hand config in 7.1 to get it to work, but in 7.2 the
ranges are limited and I can not find a config that will work. Has anyone
found an alias name card or a set of configurations that will get a driver
going for the asound ALS120 cards? If not I'll go get a supported card, I
don't need stereo quality sound ( I have a Akai / Sansui set up right next to
me for super high quality sound) I would just like to be able to here sound
on some of the internet vids. Thanks,

The best way to become a Linux user is to expend some effort on
your own part before asking for assistance. Actually most of this
investigation should be done before you install Linux. Linux like many
OS's has a steep learning curve. The more effort you put into
educating yourself in the beginning, the shorter and less steep is the
learning process. If you're like most of us it'll all seem like
Chinese arithmetic at first. Just keep reading, you'll be surprised at
how fast it'll start comin together.

At this point tho, you might wanna try click'n on your main menu,
Documentation | Mandrake Doc and read everything there. If you want
further clarification, go thru the entire site at
http://mandrakeuser.org/ There's many other sites on the Net that
provide specific Linux help and docs, Google is prob'ly your best
friend here. Then if you want to query the mailing list(s), first
search the archives at http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3
to see if your questions are common ones that've already been answered.
You'll get quicker answers that way.

Johnit sounds like you don't know which version of
XFree86 was installed. So you need to find out by typing at
a command line:

X -version

if it's 4.0 or 4.0.1 then the XF86Config-4 file is the one to
be edited, but if it's 3.3.6 then the XF86Config file is the
one.

to delete the ~/.kde/share/config/kmail:(big number) and the

[newbie] XF86Config

2000-12-16 Thread John Agapito

Hi all,

This isn't exactly a problem, but a question. I recently moved to
Mandrake from Corel Linux. So far so good, but I'm still getting used to
an RPM based distro as opposed to Debian based. Corel used to screw up
once in a while on boot up, leaving me with no mouse, at which point I
would edit XF86Config in etc/X11 to restore the serial mouse (for some
reason it kept converting back to PS/2?!).

Anyway, in Mandrake, in etc/X11 I find:

XF86Config
XF86Config.old
XF86Config-4
XF86Config-4.old

So, in the event of a problem, which do I edit? Not the .old files, I
suppose, but how does the -4 file differ from the other?

Cheers,

John

KPackage w/
"Upgrade", "Replace Packages", and "Check Dependancies" checked. I was following the
MandrakeUser.org directions and realized that I sould have done it from a shell right
after
pressing the Kpackage "Install" button because I couldn't be sure what was really
happening.
Anyway, I decided to finish using Kpackage for consistency (my mistake).

What do you think is my best course of action from here: 1) Uninstall rpm's and do it
again (rpm
-ivh?)from a shell or prompt, 2) re-install (w/o uninstall) from a shell or prompt, 3)
Compile
another kernel from source?

I've compiled a kernel once before, 6 months ago, and don't remember it being all
that difficult
and failry quick (30-45 minutes).

gunzip -dc mozilla*.tar.gz | tar -xvf-
That should create a new folder called mozilla-installer.
ie /home/Carson/mozilla/mozilla-installer

<4> Go to the mozilla-installer directory that was just created.
cd mozilla-installer
ie It should look like this when you do a "pwd".

As Johnny five would say, "More input!"

"How" are you upgrading?

rpm -i
or
rpm -u

because if it is "-u" that is the reason you are having problems. You have
to do an "-i" install if you want the kernel to work.

I have two questions.
1. Do USB CD burners( in particullar Sony Spressa

message saying that it detected it( funny enough, as the same name CRX 120 that
windows did) but i am not sure how to get it working. Any help would be
apreciated.

2. There is a product available from netraverse.com
called Win4Lin 2.0. I would lke to get/generate some feeedback from Mandrake
users who are using this product and how they feel about it, does it work, how
to set it up, etc. Thank you.

using mpg123, but cant get it to not skip, no matter the buffer size. Has
anyone had success with this program?

an executable file in linux can be called anything, very often the name of
the executable file is the same as that of the program without any extension,
a lot (but by no means all)of program executables are stored in /bin, /sbin,
/usr/bin and other directories that are named /.../bin bin standing for
binary, i think, the reason typing gimp ran the prog is because the
executable for gimp is in a directory which is in your path, ever do dos? as
in path=?, however unlike dos most programs do not keep all their files in
the one directory but instaed you might find the executable in /usr/bin/, the
documents files in /usr/share/doc/.appname/, perhaps some configuration
files will be /home/username/appname/, or for important progs in /etc/ or
/etc/appname/,

this is not an exclusive list and i don't pretend to really understand the
philosophy behind this system but after a while it no longer seemed strange
to me! essentialy configuration files are in one place, executables in
another, and documents in another, and of course shared library files that
more than program nneed to run are kept in another place!

haven't installed mozilla so can't help, it's possible that you need to run
one of the files from a command line, surely there is a readme or some such
file?

[newbie] Understanding Program Locations

2000-12-16 Thread Carson Christian

Hello All. I've just installed system 7.2 yesterday. I'm completely new to
linux, and this is my first shot at it. As A long time windows user, I am
finding myself very confused by the way linux handles application storage. I
would like it if someone could explain a few things to me.

1) There appear to be nothing like an .exe file for linux software, where is
the program itself? For instance, if I go into the gimp directory, I see all
it's support files, but no executable. However, if I Alt-F2 and type in
"gimp", it runs just fine. Where is the program stored?

2) This is more specific I downloaded the latest Mozilla milestone, and
would like to try it under linux. However, I cannot figure out how to install
it. There appear to be no files that "run" when clicked on, even though i
downloaded the version "with installer". Help?

3) System clock. Every time I reboot, my clock gets all screwed up. I reset
it, and it's fine until I reboot again, but then it's off by a few hours.
Ideas?

Thanks alot in advance! I'm really liking KDE, but I need to know more about
how software and the file system works before I can be happy with it.

[newbie] Matrox G450 install

2000-12-16 Thread Steve Pauly

Hi

I am having trouble installing lm7.2 on my system.

I am able to boot from the cdrom and get as far as specifying the video card, then the
system seems to lock. Nothing on the screen.

I am running on an Abit ka7-100 running an Athlon 800 with a Matrox G450 video card.

What is the trick to getting an install with this card?

Thanks in advance,
steve.

Re: [newbie] Pine has a problem...

2000-12-16 Thread Mark Weaver

Hi Paul,

I had been using Postfix when I was running Mdk 7.1, but then switched to
Sendmail when I started running the Dyndns ddclient mostly because
Sendmail is a much more robust MTA than Postfix. Plus I had been fooling
around with Majordomo at the time. For some very strange reason though
when I installed Mdk 7.2 Sendmail all but refused to work. It took some
real convincing and about 5 hours of chasing down and satisfying
dependency troubles to get Sendmail working again.

Now, there appears to be a permissions problem somewhere and Sendmail is
having the problem. Root user has no trouble using Sendmail as MTA, and
the recipient thing that is mentioned in the error message I get the
feeling is just a symptom of the real problem.

After using both Postfix and Sendmail I rather prefer Sendmail, but for
the life of me I can't figure out what the heck is going on here.

[newbie] Visor, jpilot, usb, and Mandrake 7.2

2000-12-16 Thread Jim Crossley

Does anyone on this list use jpilot to sync their Handspring Visor via a
USB cradle running Mandrake 7.2?

I recently purchased a new PC. Though I never had problems with the
above configuration on my ol' 133 MHz Pentium, my sync fails after only
a few files on my new 700 MHz Duron. I'm wondering if the extra speed
is the reason???

Thanks

Here is the problem. One or more recipients failed. Apparently you are
trying to send something to someone whose address is not correct.

Reconsider sendmail, and also look at Postfix which comes with mdk 7.2 as
default MTA. I never managed to get sendmail to work, and had Postfix
running in 15 minutes including coffee. Look at www.postfix.org for help
on setting it up. It works!

Re: [newbie] LM 7.2 & TelnetD - Accessing Problem

2000-12-16 Thread Tim Holmes

This was something that somebody mentioned a day or two ago. You may have
telnet disabled. When installing ssh it automatically disables telnet because
it's not secure.

You also may not have the telnet-server installed, which would then not let
anybody telnet in.

Run this command to determine if you do have the telnet server up and
running.

rpm -qa | grep telnet

On my machine at home, YODA, it is now, but I use ssh since it's secure.

[root@yoda /root]# rpm -qa | grep telnet
telnet-0.17-5mdk

On another friend's machine I have an account on, it is installed, though it's
disabled.

[timh@eric timh]$ rpm -qa | grep telnet
ktelnet-0.61-6mdk
telnet-0.16-4mdk
telnet-server-0.16-4mdk

So check for those things. The telnet-server-0.16.-4mdk is on the install discs
for 7.2. I don't remember which CD, but I do know they're on there.

And actually, now that I look, it's on Disc one.

[root@yoda RPMS]# pwd
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS
[root@yoda RPMS]# ls -la telnet-*
-r--r--r--8 root root50832 Oct 6 08:07 telnet-0.17-5mdk.i586.rpm
-r--r--r--8 root root27695 Oct 6 08:07
telnet-server-0.17-5mdk.i586.rpm

Hope that helps.

Re: [newbie] Lixus just crashed

2000-12-16 Thread Tim Holmes

The thing is KDE is quite a beast. I've found that a lot of KDE apps
have died on me. Not so much in KDE, but running KDE apps in Enlightenment
I've seen a large amount of times where those have just died on me. I
use KDE for work for the most part. Mainly because I haven't figured out
how to completely customize FVWM2 to look like it does at work. But I
don't run a lot of those GUI apps. I stopped using Netscape for the most
part. I use Mozilla, which has shown that it's more stable. I've yet to
have that die on me.

But there is a setting that you check when setting up Kppp/Internet Dialer
that says when I log out DO NOT drop the Internet connection. You must
have selected that.

I also stick with command based programs. I use a terminal version of
AIM. No GUI, just pure text, and I run that through Eterm. (CAIM is the
name of the app if you're interested.) I run Mutt for my mail program.
Just type mutt at a command prompt. It should be part of the basic install.

I don't really mess with news readers personally, but if you get rid of
KMail and the CD player, I'm pretty sure you won't have this problem. It's
most likely that your CD player is a KDE program, and it running with KMail,
knocked heads and that's why the X Server crapped on ya!

Personally I'd say drop Netscape, and KMail. But KMail is a pretty good app.
I will say that much. Not going to say to just get rid of KDE because you
may find you just don't like the other Windows Managers. But Netscape out of
the way, and KMail will save you some RAM space and crashing head aches.

This printer is a real winprinter, it is for sure not supported by any
Linux distro and it is not compatible to any other NEC printer. See

   http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=122016

If you need a 600 dpi BW laser which works perfectly under Mandrake 7.2
you should either buy a native PostScript model (Lexmark, Brother) or a
well-supported PCL printer (as the HP LaserJet 1100). See

   http://www.linuxprinting.org/suggested.html

For how to install a native PostScript printer see also

Konqueror either during file management or internet surfing. No suggestions
from here though, waiting for some myself.

Re: [newbie] kmail problems

2000-12-16 Thread s

If you have a pop3 account like with MSN or whoever, then yes pop3. Host
name is the pop address like: pop3.email.msn.com, and port is almost always
110. To recieve, yes SMTP, again host: smtp.email.msn.com, and port is
almost always: 25. If you don't know it, you can sometimes find it at their
site, or call and ask them. AOL, you won't be able to use except thru their
software, bellsouth's is: mail.bna.bellsouth.net for both. Or on your
Window partition, look in Outlook Express (or whatever you have been using),
under Tools > accounts > mail > properties > servers. Yes, the name part is
whatever you want your name to be displayed on the email as sender. Like
mine is: s.
