 Ciao,

Il fatto che ti risponda modem occupato potrebbe essere un buon segno.
 Succedeva anche a me.

TUTTO QUI.

  ... dubbio ...
Hai verificato i livelli audio? Nel menu K - Multimedia - Suono trovi
l'applicazione Mixer sonoro. Controlla che i livelli del volume non siano
a zero... Altrimenti, prova ad usare sndconfig dalla console di root.

Hi,

I post my message again since I haven't received any response and I
haven't resolved the problem.

I have got a notebook with a combo 3c575cT network card. The card is
recognised by Mandrake 8.0. When I try to ping myself, the data packets
aren't send. When I configure manually the IRQ and the I/O parameters,
the packets are sent but lost.

Has someone an idea to solve this problem ?

Re: [newbie] Alternative to QuickTime

2001-12-04 Thread Derek Jennings
The best alternative to Quicktime I have found is ... Quicktime..

It can be made to run under Linux using the codeweavers crossover plugin
available from www.codeweavers.com. Crossover is a wine application and
enables you to run native windows plugins including Microsoft
Powerpoint/Word/Excel viewers.
Installation is a real breeze and it works either standalone or as an
embedded plug in in Netscape, konqueror, Opera, Galeon and Mozilla.

The downside? Well its not free. The crossover plugin will cost you $29
(but that money does help to support the Wine development)
You can use it without paying, but every 30 seconds or so a window pops up
begging for money. (Doesn't stop me using it that way though)

I have just dedicated one of my machines as a Linux server. Installed

That is it does immediately after I set up internet connection sharing, but
after a server reboot I can no longer use the shared connection until I
configure it again.

i.e. I use the wizard in DrakConf. It tells me that this is already
configured. I click on the Configure button anyway and it reruns the scripts
and everything works again.

Reboot and it's no go. It's a dialup connection and it still dials OK - is
then accessable from the server, but not to the client machines.

I'm planning to do the server tutorial stuff and learn what's behind the
wizard, but right now I need a quick fix (don't we all!), or at least a
starting point on where to look for a diagnostic.

As always, any help is much appreciated.

hmmu could try to locate the script that runs behind the wizard by
searching for it in the
/etc/rc.d/ path.

as internet connection sharing is done by ipchains or iptables (as long as
u do masquerading and not caching - and i assume u use masquerading) there
should be ipchains/-tables commands in the script that sets up the internet
connection sharing.

so try to grep for all ipchains/iptables commands located in scripts in the
/etc/rc.d/ path:

grep ipchains /etc/rc.d/*
or
grep iptables /etc/rc.d/* if u use iptables.

this will give u an output for all scripts in this path that have
ipchains or iptables in it.
maybe u are able to find the responsible script this way.

this is only a guess - i really dont know what the wizard does - since i do
almost everything in console...
give it a try

Re: [newbie] Alternative to QuickTime

2001-12-04 Thread Derek Jennings

I wish there were an 'easy' way to use wine.
The easiest ways are to use the crossover plugin, or the transgaming wine
implementation. They have been 'tweaked' for their particular purpose and
save you the grief. If you were to spend the time you could get wine doing
the same things yourself without paying a penny.
If you want to use wine yourself then I suggest you do not use the Mandrake
rpm, but instead get the wine CVS tree and read everything you find at
www.winehq.org
Wine does not need any windows or windows partition on the drive. It can use
applications already installed in existing windows partitions, but this is
not the preferred mode of operation. A pure linux environment is best.
So far I have managed to get wine to work playing Counterstrike (menus a bit
funny but game play OK), and Quicken (unusably slow and mouse never quite
points where you want it)

Re: [newbie] gnomeppp pppd daemon dies

2001-12-04 Thread lee

I asked this question sometime ago and was advised that if I was using
x-screensaver or apache that these could conflict with this type of
connection. I basically gave up on it and made kppp work..if ya get gnome ppp
to work I'd love to know how you did it :-)

Lee

I haven't used gnome ppp before (I use kppp), but I was forced to not
install kde on a system because the machine has 3 small hd's, the largest
is 600M and the other 2 are around 200M or less. So, since the smaller
footprint is Gnome, and since the Gnome panel works with Xfce (my favorite
small footprint gui), I decided to install it. Setting up the dial-up has
been problematic because I'm not familiar with the interface. As far as I
can see the setup is correct, however it appears that I have a permissions
problem. This problem is not confined to the one Gnome-only system,
however--the same error occurs when I attempt to use gnome ppp instead of a
working kppp dial-up on other machines. Anyway, I hit the connect button
on gnome ppp and immediately a crash message appears that the pppd daemon
died unexpectedly. My log files show only that pppd 2.4.0 started by
eryl, uid 501 followed by failed to open /dev/modem: Permission denied,
followed by Exit. The error message is identical on both the Gnome-only
machine and the machines with a working kppp.
Can some Gnome guru out there (I know you're on this list) PLEASE tell be
what I have misconfigured, and why it's only a misconfiguration with Gnome
 ppp.

 Thanks,

 eryl

I am a new sysadmin for my ISP.. we have a horrible spam problem here, and
no one has done anything in the past to resolve it.
I have decent linux experience, but i wouldnt exactly call myself a pro..
:) i have been looking into blackmail, but it seems very difficult to
install.
I was wondering if anyone out there knew of an AWESOME spam filter, that
can be used system-wide (for ISP use) and is EASY to install and
administer.. can anyone please help me?!?!? :)

THANKS!

Spam Assassin is worth looking at http://spamassassin.sourceforge.net
It performs textual analysis of mails and scores them. It also looks up known
spammers and includes the Vipul's Razor collective spam database that was
featured on Slashdot a couple of days ago.
The Perl version is probably a bit slow for ISP use, but they have now
introduced a daemon version with ISP's in mind.

Here is an example of the header it adds to any Spam mail it finds

Re: [newbie] Samba file shares problem/oddity

2001-12-04 Thread tek1

scenario/pre-requisites:
---
1) windows username = myWinUser, password = 12345

linux/samba steps:
---
1) create a linux user:
  useradd myLinuxUser

2) open up the /etc/samba/smbusers file and add the below line:
 myLinuxUser = myWinUser
 * note: myWinUser is really the name of your samba user; this will
map your samba/win user to a linux user

3) go to kmenu/configuration/networking/samba (this starts swat)

4) create a password for the myWinUser (samba user)
 -click on passwords button
 -for username, type myWinUser
-for password, enter 12345 (the same password that myWinUser uses on
windows)
 -click add new user button

i believe that this should work.

also try posting your samba questions to the samba mailing list:

As far as mail sorting, I've found getmail works well and is easier to set up

[newbie] Still no printing in LM8.1!

2001-12-04 Thread Marcia

Dear All,

I have been reading everything and doing everything I can think of to get my
Epson Stylus Color to work with LM 8.1. I wrote for help about a week ago and
nothing that has been suggested has worked. I even reinstalled LM 8.1 and the
exact same thing happened again. The printing worked with the test pages then
even worked at first with kword and abiword until I changed the default
settings. I noticed that it works as long as I do not try to add xpp or
change settings. Unfortunately the default settings are not acceptable so I
have to adjust but once I do then the printing stops completely. I have
checked files and I get messages such as device or resource is busy. Then
when I check the queues they show all of my jobs are processing or pending
but nothing prints. I am even tempted to get another printer even though I
know it is not the printer. I even tried it again in Windows 98 to make sure
and of course it works. I am tempted to put my Windows 95 as dual boot on
this machine just to get some printing again. If anyone can help with this I
will be very appreciative. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Marcia

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.1 and webcam

2001-12-04 Thread Florian Struck

Well i recently bought a Quickcam 3000 PRO from logitech without knowing
there support behaviour =/ it is supported starting at kernel 2.4.13 .
Since it has Phillips ingredients. Phillips webcams are supported (allmost
all AFAIK ) they use the kernel module pwc (so does my logitech ) but dont
buy the logitech its a good cam but you will have to wait or hack better
support for it . Example: i get the camera working fine with a small picture
(nokia-display-size on a 1280x1024 screen res) that is because you need to
uncompress the signal to get the resolution higher (it SHOULD support 480x600)
but to uncompress you need to compile your own kernel with the module pwcx
wich you get at http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ (a recommendable site )
Recommendable is to use a analog camera and a tv grabbercard (bttv) but
ofcourse those are more expensive.
Cheers
Florian

2001-12-04 Thread Newbie

What I do from my e mail server is to make the
file /etc/mail/access (used by sendmail)
and in the file called access, you can
bounce mail that you don't want, for example
my /etc/mail/access file reads liek the one
below, however please note that some of
the addresses are obscured to protect
people, not all on my list are poopybottoms,
some are just annoying me temporarily,
but from the addresses, ip numbers, or
hostnames you can get a jist of the
format, but then again, if not, please
mail me back and ask me for help like
from who do you want to bounce mail
back to and stuff.

The lines that say ERROR: in them will
bounce mail back I think, then you can
put in the standard error message or you
can think up one of your own razzes hehehe.

# Check the /usr/share/doc/sendmail-8.11.6/README.cf file for a description

[newbie] cups and windows shared printer - stumped

I've been trying for ages (or what seems like ages) to get CUPS to print
to a Windows 2000 shared printer. I am stumped. I tried to use kups to
configure the printer (since people reported success with kups), but to
no avail.

The following lines appear in my /var/log/cups/error_log file when I try
to print to my default printer, an HP Laserjet 4L:

The file to which the error messages refer exists and is mode 644. The
printer is physically attached to the Windows machine. I have no
problem mounting a shared Windows directory on the Linux machine using
my Windows network username and password. The command smbclient -L
machine-name -U user says the printer is indeed there.

I've no clue what to try next. Any pointers?

Thanks,
Kathy

without success:

(1) The man page for XF86Config(5) documents the optional entries Gamma
x or Gamma r g b in the XF86Config file which should set the monitor's
gamma (x, r, g, and b being between 0.1 and 10.0, default 1). I tried
both variants as root but nothing happened either time... but since the
man page warns that Not all drivers are capable of using this
information, I assume I'm out of luck here. Has anyone had luck with
these entries?

I have not one but three XF86Config files, not counting backups:

/etc/XF86Config
/etc/X11/XF86Config
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

I assume that multiple files are to provide different configurations
under different circumstances. In any case I edited them all
identically.

For what it's worth, XFree86 -version reports:

XFree86 Version 4.1.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6510)
Release Date: 2 June 2001
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.8-5mdkenterprise i686 [ELF]
Module Loader present

(2) My display adapter is a SiS620, which is supported by XFree86. Just
for laughs I downloaded and installed the 620 driver from SiS (yes, they
have Linux drivers) but there's no change.

(3) The man page for XFree86(1) documents the command line switch
-gamma. I normally work in X, so first I tried switching to tty1 with
Ctrl-Alt-F1, logging in as another user, and entering XFree86 -gamma
9.0, which returned:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0

I thought it was possible to run multiple instances of X, but I clearly
did something wrong here. (I'd like to know what, as eventually I will
want to have multiple instances... but that's another issue.)

Then, I changed my boot configuration to not boot into X, rebooted and
logged in, and gave the above command. X hung: the same moiré pattern
appeared that always does when X is starting, but hung there. The result
is the same when I simply enter XFree86 from the command line without
the -gamma switch.

(4) From an xterm, I gave the command xgamma -gamma 9.0, which
returned:

Xserver is running an old XFree86-VidModeExtension version (0.8)
Minimum required version is 2.0

I did a web search on the above message but the only hits I found were
for dead (404) pages.

Ideas, anyone? I'm stumped, and in the meantime I'm stuck with a barely
legible display.

[newbie] Intel or Realtek?

2001-12-04 Thread Eric Caron

Hi everybody,

I need to replace one of my network cards and I was wondering which model
would be better between one that has the very popular Realtek 8139 or one
that has the Intel 21143 (is that the one called 'Tulip'?). Both are by
Intellinet and they are in the cheap and affordable category of product

Any advice would be appreciated on which would work best under Mandrake
and/or Red Hat.

Thank you!

I use Realtek, and have been using them for about a year now with
absolutely no problems. The other I don't know, but I would say quite
openly that the Realtek cards are great :-) Both are used here at home with
1 computer running Mandrake, and the other redhat... so there are no
problems there.

Good luck :-)

Re: [newbie] FTP Problem - Please help if you can thanks :)

2001-12-04 Thread bascule

your cuteftp client at work is uisng passive mode, i assume thatis because
work is behind a firwall that won' allow active ftp, toget passive mode to
work with proftpd you need to allow the ftp client to either: i) connect to
any random high port or ii) connect to a range of ports specified on your
proftpd.conf file, either way the port that the client connects to must be
opened on the target system, if you can't use active ftp from your client
then i suggest opening a range of ports on the home system and listing them
in /etc/proftpd.conf as follows

snip
#this allows passive ftp connections on a specified range
PassivePorts minport maxport

#this specifies the ip of the masquerading firewall
MasqueradeAddress firewall-ip-address
---snip-

i place this next to the global stuff at the top of proftpd.conf

i have used a very small range of ports since my ftp box is low traffic and
non-public, those ports are then opened and forwarded to the ftp box from the
firewall, you must choose what you think appropriate

You either haven't run 'shutdown' before turning the machine off or were forced to
reboot the machine because of a system freeze. The GNU/Linux file system is very
robust and usually you'll get away with a long file system check. If you are unlucky,
however, vital system files may have been damaged. Keeping '/' on a small partition of
its own minimizes this risk.
Since ML 7.1, you have been able to choose the ReiserFS instead of extfs2 for your
file system. RFS is a journaling file system and keeps track (a 'journal') of all read
/ write operations. So even in case of abrupt system failure, the status of the system
will be preserved and no checks will be run at reboot. Notice that you can't
'transform' a partition from extfs2 to RFS without formatting it, i.e. loosing all
data on the partition.

Thanks John, but yes, they were already executable. I played some more and
made it work by moving the installation files to another directory. Not sure
what difference this made yet, unless the fact that the directory I was

Can anybody fill me in on this? Original place was in /home/public/so6beta/
/home/public is the root of an exported tree. Have now moved them to
/usr/so6beta and things work. As this is to be a server based install I
thought it made sense to put them in an area already NFS mounted.

Or maybe this has nothing to do with the problem??

thanks again anyway

It's not safe, and you NEVER should connect as root. For much the
same reasons you should NEVER use Windoze to connect at all. In both
situations, anybody has root capabilities

This is not 100% correct.

If you use Win9x/WinME, it is correct. All users have root privleges.
If you use NT/Win2K/WinXP, you most certainly can easily connect to the
Internet as a non-root-user, with no rights to install software.

This is a complete guess, but try swappin to passive ftp...

its possible that your authentication is working fine on port21 but when
it
tries to switch to a high port, it is being blocked by a firewall (you do

easier to swap to passive...

like I said, thats just a guess, I don't and rairly have ever used ftp. (I
use scp or secure copy, which is much the same thing only it won't leave
someone else with your password.)

RE: [newbie] FTP problem

2001-12-04 Thread Damian G

as you probably already know, ftp uses two connections, data and control
connection. the control connection is the one you make when you connect to
the server. now, when you want to list the contents of a directory ( or
download a file ), you will receive the directory listing or the file thru
the data connection which is made by the server to your computer.

probably you can´t get the DATA connection going, this may be because of a
firewall/router blocking inbound connections. check your firewall/router.
:o)

[newbie] Armagetron and Tux Racer Games will not run

2001-12-04 Thread Michael Peligro

I recently installed Linux-Mandrake 8.1 on my system. For a Harry Homeowner
or a Joe Sixpack like me, I was glad the installer recognized all my devices
and installed properly without me having to fiddle with cryptic Unix
commands or logging to the dreaded console (which I don't know how to use).

I really like games, but I CAN'T RUN ARMAGETRON or TUX RACER. Whenever I
launch these games, I can see the hourglass for the initial runtime
processing of the game. The game then unexpectedly exits. I don't know why
it behaves this way. Please help!

Are there any documentation (html, readme.txt) or help files included with
these games? Where can I get these if none is included?

I run my KDE on X at a resolution of 1024x768. My graphics card is a SIS 530
running Xfree86 4.1 with 3D software acceleration (3D support deemed
experimental by Xfree, according to the installer, but I installed it
anyway, and it runs fine, except for the aforementioned games). The other
games run fine, but they run in a window that I am unable to resize. Can I
resize it?

Am I right in suspecting that KDE's use of memory is responsible for this?
What graphic interface would let me conserve the most memory for my games
(Window Maker?, Blackbox?)? I plan to install heavyweight games such as
Quake3, Unreal, Counter-Strike, Half-Life, and Red Alert 2: Yuri's revenge
on my machine. Any tips you can advise?

Here are my system specs.

AMD-K6+2-500
128MB RAM
SIS 530 on-board AGP 2x 8MB video RAM
ES-SOLO on-board sound card
20GB hardrive

where the links don't work when using Mozilla or Netscape (4.7x and 6.x). Is
it a bug or a configuration problem? I have experimented with the Netscape
Preferences but can't seem to get the links to work. The links work fine with
IE.

Re: [newbie] SPAM FILTER

2001-12-04 Thread Mark Weaver

Matt,

have you looked into setting up some regex's in the SMTP's configuration
file. This is one good way to start taking a bite out of all that crap
they're sending at your mailservers. That is definatelythe first place i
would start to look as opposed to finding a third party app to take care
of this.

Another good alternative would be Procmail. That would/is my second step
in a tiered filtering scheme.

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of an AWESOME spam filter, that can be used
system-wide (for ISP use) and is EASY to install and
administer.. can anyone please help me?!?!? :)

 THANKS!

Matt,

Procmailis fairly simple and straightforware and just requires a bit of
time to get to know it and the syntax it uses to filter mail. it's very
nice once you get to know it.

Give procmail a try. I'm about to set it up for my network as well. I
 don't
actually have it running yet, but I've seen nothing but positive things
 about
  it.
