[newbie-it] Printer Hp930

2002-01-17 Thread CyberPenguin

Ciao a tutti,
funziona perfettamente. Parallelamente però nella finestra di
terminale, che ho sempre aperta in secondo piano, mi compaiono
le seguenti scritte:

[root@localhost /root]# printtool
everything already installed
Starting CUPS printing system: [OK]
parport_pc: Device or resource busy
rmmod: module parport_probe is not loaded
parport: Device or resource busy
modprobe: Can't locate module parport_probe
rmmod: module parport_probe is not loaded

Giovanni.

Well they are both Blue :-)

I am still guessing wildly here, but if your onboard video cannot be
disabled, then there is probably an entry for that device in your
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, and Mandrake may be directing output to that
device instead of your Radeon.

Have you tried attaching a monitor to the onboard video socket?

Does anything happen when you do Ctl+Alt+F1 through to F10 ?

If you can get terminal access have you tried running XFdrake to reconfigure
your video settings? (Choose conservative values. They can always be changed
later)

 you

have. Sometimes linux tries to use the memory that is reserved for the

Well Nicolas, this issue comes up every now end then here on the list,
so try - (no offence ;-)) - to search the mail-archive for i.e.
CD-burning or something similar. Now, the short answer is as follows :

Suppose your CD-reader (Creative Infra) is the master on your second
IDE-bus and your CD-burner (HP 9300) is the slave on the same IDE-bus
(just examples !), then they are listed by linux as hdc and hdd
respectively. That means, that so far the kernel accepts them as
IDE-drives (in windows-speak something like D: and E:). Now, to use them
for burning-purposes, they have to behave like SCSI-drives. Most
linux-front-ends for burning does that automatically, but only for
dedicated burners. That's why your front-end doesn't see your CD-reader.
To correct this you have to make the kernel think that your
IDE-CD-drives are SCSI-ones. This is easily accomplished :

1. open a terminal and become root (type su and, when prompted, type
your root-password)
2. open a text-editor of your choice (I prefer Midnight Commander -
type : mc)
3. go to /etc/lilo.conf and hit F4 to edit that file.
4. here you must make an append-statement (a boot-parameter to linux),
like this :
   image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=Linux
root=/dev/hda2
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append= hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi devfs=mount
vga=791
read-only

where hdc is my CD-reader and hdd is my CD-burner (eventually, put in
your own configuration).
5. hit F2 to save this file.
6. hit F10 to exit Midnight Commander
7. still in your terminal-window as root, type : lilo (and watch the
messages).
8. type exit twice.
9. reboot, and you are done ! - (Eventually, you can now check the file
/etc/fstab)

Enjoy !

RE: [newbie] Blank screen instead of login screen.. possible Radeon video card problem

2002-01-17 Thread Steve Jeppesen

Sorry, I should have been a bit more descriptive..

I tried hitting the escape key when the lilo screen came up, and entering
linux mem=247M but that did not work.

You mean it did not boot, or it did not fix your problem?

I typed in linux mem=247M at the prompt which said boot:
however it did not fix my problem.

I have managed to save the ddebug.log install.log and report.bug files
and
am wondering if there is somewhere/someone to contact in order to find
out
any pertinent info in any of those logs in order to debug my install?

How are you seeing these files if you only get a blank screen? Are you
logging in on COM1 or something?

I was able to use the failsafe boot mode and eventually get to a login
screen using runlevel 3, then I saved those logs to /mnt/win_c

I am still guessing wildly here, but if your onboard video cannot be
disabled, then there is probably an entry for that device in your
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, and Mandrake may be directing output to that
device instead of your Radeon.

Have you tried attaching a monitor to the onboard video socket?

I am contemplating doing just that if I can find the room to have a second
monitor.

Now here is the weird part, after using XFdrake and 1. letting Mandrake
configure both heads (video cards) and 2. choosing XFree86 4.1.0 without
acceleration and 16 colors I was able to get X up and running and can use
Gnome, KDE or other desktops. However I found that it is directing the
output thru the onboard video adapter, but this monitor is connected to the
Radeon card NOT the onboard video socket (which makes me think it was
working before and so I was just not seeing the display... it was being sent
to the monitor which wasn't there ;-) )

I would still like to be able to use the Radeon card even if it is without
3D acceleration - can I change which video card it is using somehow?

Does anything happen when you do Ctl+Alt+F1 through to F10 ?

Not before using XFdrake and was attempting to use X, I did try that also to
see if I could bring up a terminal window to at least do a shutdown -r now.
Instead I had to do a power down and reboot - which bites when it has to
check the drive each time.

At least X is up and running. Mandrake looks great compared to RH! When I
get home tonite I will look into switching which video card it uses and/or
bring in a second monitor and see what's happening on it.

Thanks for the input Derek

Yes mine did not either. The initrd.img file is missing in /boot. You

I've got 8.0 on a 200mhz with 128 megs of ram and it runs o.k. (no
speed demon, but very useable). It's pretty good with xfce and the
xfce file manager, but konquerer and some of the other kde apps are
slow loading. Opera is nice, but Netscape takes quite a while to
load, so my recommendation with a slower machine and the 8.x
distros is go toward minimalistic and it will o.k.

 Eye candy has a price.

Remember it's not the distro as such that sets the speed of the
system, it's the kernel and, more importantly, what you're trying to
get the kernel to handle. Newer versions of software packages may
run faster or slower, depending what the developers are up to:
generally developers try to get their programs to work faster, but on
the other hand, they also put in new features, which frequently slow
them down, and sometimes assume that users have fast processors and
tons of RAM.

If speed is an issue, as Erylon said, cut down on the eye candy: use
IceWM or Blackbox as your window manager rather than KDE or GNOME,
use Mozilla instead of Netscape and only use Star Office if you have
time on your hands. It's also worth checking what services you're
using, as it's very easy during installation to install and run
daemons you don't really need, or don't need to have running all the
time.

If you prefer an older distribution, RH 6.0 and Mandrake 7.2 are both
good (use RedHat if your CPU is older than a Pentium I), but unless
your machine is a real antique, I'd wait for Mandrake 8.2.

DELL's website (it was for RH 7.1, but I assume it's ok for ML 8.1 per XFree86). I
almost want to
give up on this, it's so frustrating to see disk checking when rebooting the machine
from dead. Any
suggestions are appreciated.

Machine: DELL Inspiron 4000, PIII CPU, 1GB RAM
V. Card: ATI Rage Mobility 128 with 8MB RAM
LCD screen (highest resolution: 1280x1024)
OS: Mandrake Linux 8.1
XFree86: version 4.1.0 (there is a 3.3.6 somehow by Mandrkae Control center, which is
XFdrake)

Don't worry about it Nick. I am trying to set up pV3 which is a viz software for

can do that

Windoze at 1024*768. The X server version is 4.1.0, and when I tried to set it up
with Mandrake
Control center (it's XFdrake acutally), I saw the limitation of the accel server,
then I picked the
plain X 4.1.0, and set the 24 for color depth. After it failed, I then tried to
adjust
/etc/XF86Config manually, no luck so far. By the way, which config file XFree86
uses? is it
 /etc/XF86Config or XF86Config-4? Thanks,

For XF-4.1.0 you want XF86Config-4.

Try 32bit, your card, as many, may not support 24.

Yes mine did not either. The initrd.img file is missing in /boot. You
need to run mkinitrd (see man mkinitrd or just enter mkinitrd for help).
My command looks looks this: mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.8-26mdk
2.4.8-26mdk. After the initrd.img file is made, you must copy it to

I found that if I open a terminal I can create a boot disk that works
fine, simply by using the mkbootdisk command as follows:

mkbootdisk 2.4.8-26mdk

I also had the problem with the boot disk made during the installation
as well as by using Drakfloppy.

[newbie] Another Wine Question

2002-01-17 Thread Rich

I have Wine (CodeWeaver's) set up and it runs most of my Windows apps
OK, the one problem is Quicken 99. The application opens OK and I can
open any of my Quicken files, however, if I select anything from the
account list the program crashes with an error message from Dr. Watson:
Fatal error. Could not attach to the application. WinNT error code =
5.

Also, WinNT 4.0 does not appear in the Wine configuration list; is there
a reason for this?

I'm running Mandrake 8.1. Any help in solving this problem would be
appreciated.

Sorry for not offering more specific information, but you may well have a

I personally use junkfilter, however there are many many programs for this.
I believe that almost all use procmail as the transporter of mail. You can
edit there spam filters to do almost whatever you want. You can divert all
filtered messages as SPAM to /dev/null (deleting them), however I have them
just sent to a folder where I check now any then to see if any personal
e-mails have gotten diverted wrongly.

Seacht www.freshmeat.net for SPAM filter, and it should tun up about 1000

bandwith for idiotic ads, banners,pop-up windows, java-applets and other

 Until I found the solution : The WebWasher ! ( www.webwasher.com ). They
have a linux-version in rpm-format that installs readily on MDK 8.1 and
works like a charm ! The download is about 400 KB and it's free (for
 private users anyway). Recommended !

I tried this too, however I do have my negative thoughts about this. Yes it
does filter VERY well, giving a clean page, however loading of these clean
pages takes about 1,5 times longer ~ Sometimes more. :-( Another thing is
that, being the free version, it only allows you about 15 connections. If
you are surfing drastically, and there are pages which do not hang (not
fulling loading), these get counted as connections, and now and then I get
the annoying screen saying something like you have already reached your
maximum number of connections... blaah blaah blaah

[newbie] Apache 403 Forbidden error

2002-01-17 Thread Curtis Von Lintel

I recently reinstalled mandrake 8.0 with medium security. Its running Apache
1.3.19.

And I get the 403 Forbidden error.

I am trying to FollowSymlinks from my html directory, I only have one symlink.
I have checked to make sure that the file I am symlinking has read and write
permissions
and is owned by apache. All other pages work fine, as well as those in
subdirectorys and
in the cgi-bin bin directory. I have the Options FollowSymLinks directive in
the commonhttpd.conf.
I noticed in the error_log that a wrapper was running with Apache.. suEXEC, I
disabled that
and restarted the webserver with no effect. As a last resort I am looking to
reinstall Mandrake
(which I love) with the security level of low.

The security level of Medium seems to be the determining factor. Below are the

It appears that you have Aspell installed (default) but Ispell is what kmail
is trying to use. Use software manager and install Ispell from your CD's. Or
go to the tool bar at the top of kmail and click on settings and where you
see Aspell click on that and choose Ispell or vice versa. If Ispell isn't
installed it will tell you. Easiest is to just change it to Aspell. HTH

Check in the rpmfind.net site first. I don't know if there is a specific site

Re: [newbie] LILO

2002-01-17 Thread Andre Dubuc

A very rough (and probably poor translation) but this seems to be the gist
what he is asking:

I use Mandrake 7.2 and made one small partition for windows, and because of
installing windows, I can't reconfigure my lilo because of the errors that
are written from the windows partition. It seems that to say that the
partition does not have a valid entry or boot sector. And if if Linux
/dev/hda1 and of windows (or it seems to be) /dev/hda5 (or does linux mount
the partition from the end of the program. I can access it normally) Or if
it's lilo entry not configured correctly at boot? Please help me recover from
this mess.

[newbie] DHCP client

2002-01-17 Thread Paul Sharp

Hi,
From a brand new newbie to Mandrake.
Previously used
Caldera. Have a Microsoft network
neighborhood at home
with half dozen computers and an old Pentium 233
box
running win98 and Sygate Home Network as a
gateway
with a cable modem.

Goal to replace that gateway with a linux box
eventually.
But for now I am in a Linux network class and I am
trying
get a Mandrake Linux box to work as a client on the
existing
network.

Configured the network card with draknet in
Xwindows. Set it up with no IP or mask and the DHCP box checked. Gave it the gateway address of 192.168.0.1
where the Sygate resides. Sygate provides a
DHCP server at that address.

It all ends up with eth0 running but it never gets
an IP address assigned to it. However, when the dhcpcd starts up it gets
valid information from Sygate which appears in
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info Some how
something is missing because this info never shows up in the Linux routing
tableor in the info provided by ifconfig -a for eth0
and thus there in no network access.

If I configurewith astatic IP address
such as 192.168.0.33
I haveInternet access and can browse the
web.

What is missing??

RE: [newbie] DHCP client

2002-01-17 Thread Chad

Paul,

Try not giving it a
gateway address. If you give it a gateway, it will assume that all the
other ethernet configuration is supplied, such as the IP and subnet. But
if nothing is filled in, it will take the user supplied information (nothing)
over the server supplied information (correct IP, subnet, dns, etc). If
you choose DHCP, do not give it any other information.

The box will send
out a general DHCP get request and if the Sygate server is the only server that
is listening to those requests, then it will send a reply with the supplied
information (IP, Subnet, Gateway, DNS, etc.).

Chad

[newbie] OT: VB on Linux???

2002-01-17 Thread ngn

Hi folks!!! I'm a programmer [not a senior programmer but not a newbie at
all] and I have the question if Linux has the need of VB or any Visual
Language which runs on Windows to be ported to Linux.

If exists any Visual language that runs on linux, I'd like to know it!!!

Thanks in advance

Re: [newbie] how to remove applets from taskbar?

2002-01-17 Thread shane

on the imediate left of the applet should be a very small line that right
clicking will give you a choice to remove. try that.

On Thursday 17 January 2002 21:02, you spoke unto me thusly:

I've honestly looked for help on this elsewhere. I added a dictionary
applet and newsticker applet to the taskbar, now I want them gone.
Clicking, right clicking, million-clicking doesn't give me any options.

Anybody recommend a good book on Mandrake or Linux in general?

a visual language will be nice but please not VB ported to Linux. haven't heard of it
being described as the worst thing that happened to a programmer? i have done my time
programming in VB (and other sorts of languages in Windows) and preferred Visual C
and Delphi when im on windows.

[newbie] gateway setup - help!

2002-01-17 Thread Paul Rodríguez

Hi, I am having a really hard time setting up my network. Please help!

I cannot setup my server or laptop with Mandrake Control Center (MCC) so
I need to find other tools.

First of all:

I have a box with two NICs that I would like to use as my
gateway/firewall. Both NICs work (i can connect to the internet with
each of them seperately, just changing eth0 or eth1 in MCC)

But how do I set up my network?

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this.

I would like to set up a dhcp server for ease, but don't know what is
most secure way of connecting (the network will eventually be wireless
as well.)

So what do I do now?

I configured the gateway box in MCC to have an IP, told it that the
gateway's IP was the same, and told it how to connect to the internet.
I also gave it a name. But I can not use the connection sharing wizard
in MCC because even though my network cards work fine, HardDrake doesn't
recognize them as network cards (but as other devices). So the wizard
complains that there are no network cards setup. Do I even need to use
this wizard to setup my gateway?

OK, step number two that I need help on:

My laptop:

I cannot use MCC on my laptop for internet setup because again, my
Xircom cardbus modem is not detected properly in it (although agian, it
works great). So how do I get it connected to my network? I can
connect the adsl modem to it directly and connect.

OK, quick rundown of questions for clarity:

1. Should I use DHCP or something more secure if I eventually plan to go
wireless (this week).

2. Now that I have both NICs in my gateway box and they can connect to
my ADSL modem, how do I set up my network?

3. How do I connect my laptop to my network?

Thanks you sooo, so much for helping me out with this. It's pretty
frustrating, because once i start working on it, it is hard to be on the
internet at the same time.

Thanks!

Re: [newbie] Another Wine Question

Why do you want to use the windows quicken when there is the compatible
native GPL Linux application. I forgot what the application is called
but it exists. Maybe someone else can tell us what it is called.

Also, WinNT 4.0 does not appear in the Wine configuration list; is there

Re: [newbie] LILO

2002-01-17 Thread Paul Rodríguez

He is having trouble installing windows after Linux. Lilo complains
that there is no valid boot partition. He says his Linux partition is
/dev/hda1 and window's is /dev/hda5. It seems he can see the windows
partition for linux once he is in linux.

I've responded that windows needs to be installed before Linux, and
appear first on the disk. If this is no longer true, let me know.

- Paul Rodríguez

J.,

Eu tenho entendido que o Windows sempre tem que existir antes do Linux
no disco rígido. Porém, é preciso fazer a instalação do Windows antes
que a instalação do Linux. Não te posso explicar a razão, mas sei que é
uma condição do Windows. O Linux pode existir em qualquer lugar. E
também pode ver todas as partições, o Windows só pode olhar seus
partições.
