e' collegata fisicamente viene gestita tramite CUPS!!!
i CUPS!!

Misteri...
Prova...tanto non ti costa niente penso
So solo una cosa. Devo aver sbagliato qualcosa nel reinstallare il
sistema.

2002-03-01 Thread Arwan

Ciao a tutti!

RE: [newbie] missing swap partition?

2002-03-01 Thread Barran, Richard

It certainly looks like you are on the right track.
Do you have an entry for a swap partition in your /etc/fstab?
It should look something like this
 /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

You can use diskdrake to create a swap partition without
 having to reinstall

BTW: Unless you like getting disc corruptions avoid switching
 off the machine.
Use Ctl+Alt+F2 to get a console then as root
 shutdown -h now

If you get really stuck use SysReq keys to shut down.
See page 146 of the Reference Manual for details.

Derek,

Thanks for your help, I've now created a swap partition and my machine is
much happier - I deliberately opened as many apps as I could think of and
watched... and watched... and my PC no longer crashes!

Thanks again,

Richard

2002-03-01 Thread Myers, Dennis R NWO
Title: RE: [newbie] domain registration

You will have to register a domain name. In doing so you would then show it in the registration as being hosted by yourself or your company and the IP addresses for your server. Sketchy answer, but just so you know that you will have to pay. Some of the registration companies out there now are not too expensive compared to the original $35 a year fees. HTH

You can just set it up as long as you only want private access, as in you have
to tell people the IP address. And have them insert the name ip in their hosts
file.

Else you do need to get the name registered.
and you need two nameservers, although some registrars provide them (for a fee)

Re: [newbie] Can´t install on Dell XPS 180n

2002-03-01 Thread Edvard Wikström

I have been using Linux for about 6 months, so I have some knowledge about how things
work. Although I do not consider myself as an expert user. The answer is yes, I did
the floppy using rawrite.exe. I know that both the CD:s (1 and 2) and the floppy
work because I did an install last week on an Athlon box that I have, without any
problems.
Ok, some info about this machine:
-Dell XPS 180n, a Pentium Pro machine at 180Mhz with 98 MB RAM.
-Matrox Mystique 220 4 MB RAMDAC
-Creative SB32
-HD(1) IDE IBM-DAQA-33240 (Master)
-HD (2) IDE WDC-AC31600H
That makes a total diskspace of about 4.5 GB. Both harddrives are clean, nothing on
them. I had win98 working great, but decided to remove it, making space for Mandrake.
The filesystem on both are FAT32 right now after format.
I flashed the motherboard with the latest driver, while I had win98 and it worked
great. No problems there. My idea is to make this a Linux box only, so all the
space is going to Linux. I have been removing hardware to see if the install would
kick in, but no result there. I got no clue about what is wrong. Some help is needed.

you do not necessarily have to have bradband. and it is possible to use a

[newbie] two MDK 8.0 systems on the same disc

2002-03-01 Thread Olly P

 Friday 01 March 2002 -- 09:54 hrs CST

the question of the day,

If I install two instances of MDK 8.0, which contain identical
kernels, passwords and user names...when I mount the portions of the
other, to the one running,
will I encounter an adverse interaction?

The reason for this project:
This nine bay tower and LCD monitor is mounted in a truck, I
use it
for navigation and communication E-mail...sometimes I am on the road
without my bag of trics/discs

I have an extra 2G Dos partition that I have never realized a
requirement for as once planned.I thought if I stripped down a MDK
8.0 system, reformatted to fs2, and installed it there, in one root
partition,...I would have a self contained ,bootable
repair system , to use in case I botched something on my main
system, and rendered it unworkable?

I am using Reiser so I need to use the same kernel, my concern
is...Would the repair system read the config files etc. from mounted
sections of the main system and become confused? I know the operative
system reads every partition mounted when you run trics like df -m
...it will give the specifics of the other dormant system on the disc.
so it has acess to them all.

I also wanted to use the same passwords and user names so the
permissions would match on both systems, and avoid confusion on my
keyboard inputsbut I cannot determine if these identical genetics
would create an atmosphere conductive of a system destroying
incestuous relationship.

I am not trying to back up my main system...I am trying to make a back
up system. ...that is bootable, can send mail, has VI and MC etc , one
that I can use both to repair my main MDK 8.0 and to operate ..on those
occasions when my crash axe sys admin procedures render the main
system defunct...

or..does this qualify as just another olly harebrained idea?

I think the 'standard' way is to make sure 'hardrake' and 'kudzu' are set to

set up. You can also run HardDrake later of course. AFAIK the use of sndconfig

[newbie] Mandrake wish: multi-media keyboard keys

2002-03-01 Thread Paul Rodríguez

Hi, is there an easy way to get the keys on multi-media keyboards to
work For example sleep buttons, volume dials, application launch
buttons, and cd controls The programs that I have seen for this have
been very poor and difficult to set up

Linux would be particularly well suited for taking advantage of these
buttons I remember when I first installed Mandrake on my old Hewlett
Packard I was so excited to get real customizable functionality out of
those buttons, only to find that they didn't work at all

This is an official request/wish:

It would be wonderful Mandrake could figure out an *easy* way to set up
these buttons and customize them Perhaps similarly to the way that
mousedrake let's you test your mouse buttons Press one button, give it
an arbitary name and it let's you customize it Would you like to
customize another key? Press which key/button you would like to
customize and assign a value to it

It's almost impossible to find keyboards without these buttons anyway
nowadays I was looking at a pretty black IBM (since they are
supposedly Linux friendly) keyboard, the Rapid Access keyboard, the only
black one they have in stores in my area And to get buttons working on
even that one would mean downloading a kernel patch some user wrote and
recompiling the kernel

Ok, i know whaat I'm asking is probably not as easy as it sounds, but
it's those sorts of touches that really go a long way

Thank you

[newbie] Kernel Decision - Which one?

2002-03-01 Thread Wes Gregg

Thanks to everyone that pointed me towards the list archive search page.
That proved very helpful and I am sure it will be of more help in the future.

I notice that there are already newer kernels than the one I was going to
update to (2.4.8.34). I am mainly looking for one with security updates to
the one that came with my 8.1 powerpack. That appears to be 2.4.8.34, but I
am reading that newer kernels may fix problems that I may not be aware of
(virtual memory, faster, supermount(?), etc.).

Are any kernels newer than 2.4.8.34 just as stable as it is? Differences?
With the search page I was not able to find a message that compared the
various versions starting with (Mandrake-recommended?) 2.4.8.34.

Also where can I download this kernel version, and is it safer (iow which
way is my file going to arrive without corruption?) to download with browser
(konq, or ???), ftp program (???) or with gnome transfer manager?

I would like to bring my system in line with the various updates available
through software manager/mandrake update believe I am ready to take the
first step (which seems the most daunting but should truly be the first
step?): installing a newer kernel alongside my current one.

Then I can install the nVidia kernel/glx. It seems there is already a
version made for 2.4.8.34 which gives a point to that kernel but I believe I
know how to do the make thing on the raw files if need arises.

Thanks in advance,

[newbie] HDD Upgrade Question

2002-03-01 Thread Mark Evans

Hi

I want to upgrade my old 1.2gig HDD to a new 20gig HDD. I will be doing a
fresh install of mandrake on the new HDD. The new HDD will have a / and
/home mount points.

The question is: If I have my old HDD as a slave to copy file onto the new
HDD which also has a / and /home will this work. Im thinking that linux
will probably complain having two /home mount points?

Im asking because I want to copy files from my old /home into my new
/home on my new disk.

I have no means of backing up my old HDD onto different media. The old
1.2gig once the files have been copied will be put into another PC.

Also another quick question, what percentage of 20gig would be a good idea to
allocate / and /home?

Thanks
Mark Evans

If you follow the download links on Mandrake's site to the i586 81
version, they will take you to the /Mandrake/81/i586/ directory of
that particular mirror The 248-34 kernel rpm's should be in the
/mandrake/updates/81/RPMS directory If they aren't, check another
mirror

Other non-mandrake specific kernels are said to work very well I know
plenty of people who use non-mandrake kernels and say they work
excellently in Mandrake, but I would recommend you start with the
Mandrake ones first as they are much easier to install (RPM's) and known
for sure to work You can find all sorts of non-mandrake tweaked kernel
versions at http://wwwkernelorg

I would like to bring my system in line with the various updates

Just to clarify (not sure if I understood you correctly, but) You
don't want to use MandrakeUpdate or rpmdrake to upgrade or install a new
kernel (good for everything but the kernel) Follow the steps at the
following link to do upgrade/install a Mandrake kernel from RPM (pretty
easy)

http://wwwmandrakesecurenet/en/docs/magicphp

Then I can install the nVidia kernel/glx It seems there is
already a
version made for 24834 which gives a point to that kernel but I
believe I
know how to do the make thing on the raw files if need arises

The Nvidia drivers are fairly easy to install also, go with the source
rpm's that way you don't have to worry if it is the right kernel or not

   Thanks in advance,

Good luck

[newbie] Proxy Server

Re: [newbie] Kernel Decision - Which one?

2002-03-01 Thread Paul Rodríguez

There is some lack of understanding on my part about whether or
not I am
downloading the correct kernel I understand that the enterprise is
for
multiple cpu's (I only have one 650mHz Athlon) so I don't want that
one
There is also a _third_ kernel there, it is smp What is that one
for, do
I need it also along with the file I am downloading?

Lastly (for now GRIN) there is a headers file which seemed to
small to be
the kernel (12 meg) but is it also something I might need? This is
more
 confusing than I thought

I'm honestly not sure what the enterprise kernel is all about, but it's
safe to say that's not the one you're looking for The smp (Symmetric
MultiProcessor) kernel is for motherboards with two processors

It's really not too tough, though, just scary at first Read through
the link I sent you ( http://wwwmandrakesecurenet/en/docs/magicphp )
once before going through with anything

The files you are going to want are the kernel, kernel-source,
kernel-headers, and kernel-doc Also lm_utils and lm_utils-devel

You should be fine, don't worry about it

[newbie] Accessing SSH login through Webmin

2002-03-01 Thread Terry

Hello out there ..

I am having trouble accessing my work PC with LM 8.1 through the SSH Login
feature of Webmin from any computer. I get random errors from each machine
I try to use (most of them say they are java-related). I have Bastille
installed and running, and allowing people to access port 22 for the SSH. I
also have portsentry running. When I check the /etc/hosts.deny file, I see
the machine addresses of the machines which I try to access SSH from.
Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working?

Thanks!

Re: [newbie] mandrake 7.0

2002-03-01 Thread Erylon Hines

I've run the 7.0 486 optimized version on a P90 (packard hell) and it worked just
fine. The only item built in was a 1M CL video card. So, the answer is probably,
depending on what hardware you have plugged into your Olivetti. If your hardware is
pretty standard stuff I'd say give it a try, if you have non-ide drives you might want
to use another distro for easier setup. If you have the 486 optimized version I think
you should use that one instead of the Pentium version--in my experience it works
better with the sloow Pentiums. It'll be a learning experience because you're
going to have to do a lot of work setting up your hardware.

BTW, I have a working P75 with the 486-7.0 sitting in my garage, so it works on even
slower machines.

Re: [newbie] resizing partitions

2002-03-01 Thread Zlatko Savic

Yes, you can resize the SWAP partition using DiskDrake, ofcourse you
must be root to do that. Just load the DiskDrake, click on the (green)
swap partition and then on the left-hand side of the DiskDrake the option
'resize' (or similar) will appear. click on it and it will give you a
'drag bar' (or you can enter the number) that will allow you to choose
how much space you need to have allocated for your swap partition. It
doesn't damage your system since you have plenty of RAM memory. I have
reduced mine to 100mb swap (from 200) with 128 MB RAM. Works perfect.
However, the free space will probably be left in between your new swap
and your (i am assuming you have it setup like this) /home partition.
You might wanna mount that free space in between to a new /directory.

Hope that helps,

Zlatko Savic

mean an install tutorial, I handled that fine I mean something that
helps with day to day operation and maintainence

 Thanks a lot

may answer some of your future questions

My favourite recommendations are
a) These 2 books by Mandrake which you have on your hard drive, accessible
from file:///usr/share/doc/mandrake/en/indexhtml I even went so far as
to download them in pdf format from the Mandrake website and print them
our in a 4-in-1 format The troubleshooting section in the reference
manual has come in very handy many times! I've apprecitated having that in
a printed format :-)

Good luck,

Subject: [newbie] Accessing SSH login through Webmin

Hello out there ..

I am having trouble accessing my work PC with LM 8.1 through the SSH Login
feature of Webmin from any computer. I get random errors from each machine
I try to use (most of them say they are java-related). I have Bastille
installed and running, and allowing people to access port 22 for the SSH. I
also have portsentry running. When I check the /etc/hosts.deny file, I see
the machine addresses of the machines which I try to access SSH from.
Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working?

Thanks!

Terry

A few questions:

The computer you are trying to connect to is running what OS?
The computer you are trying to connect from is running what OS?
Have you tried connecting from shell?

[newbie] Upgrading Mandrake 8.1 to XFree86-4.2.0 on a Dell i8100

2002-03-01 Thread Walter Logeman

Hi,

I have Mandrake 81 on a Dell i8100 with an ATI Radeon video
card It is currently running XFree86-410 and only has very
generic support for the card Apparently there is a better
driver in XFree86-420

Am I on the right track? I have been fining quite a few of the
files that are needed however each time I find one there are more
dependencies I am happy to keep finding more eg: libtinfoso5
- but what about the programs such as libXvso1 that are needed
by other programs on the system?

Has anyone upgraded Mandrake 81 to XFree86-420? Can it be
done? Should I upgrade to a whole new Mandrake beta? Am I using
the right commands here? (See output below)

Looking forward to some feedback!

Thanks

Walter
