It appears that my card will work just fine then. I'll give it a go. If I
run into any snags I will give you all a shout.

I gave up trying to fix KDE after I broke it uninstalling CUPS. I have
figured out some other things I didn't do correctly so I am going to redo
the whole shootin match this weekend.

As a side note, How do you uninstall Lilo from a disk?

Thanks

I would run the ALSA script, because the latest alsa supports something OSS
Compatibility, so even apps that don't use the ALSA driver, will still work
with the 'standard' oss driver included with the ALSA stuff.

A good suggestion. From what I saw on their website, this could well be a good
solution for simple tasks. I also noticed that QCad is derived from a
commercial CNC package (CAM Expert) that might be attractive to tool and die
shops, and similar operations that do NC machining. Since that area is
outside of my area of expertise, I'll leave it to someone else to pass
judgment.

Sure - but the PCI is going to be slower than the AGP (not that a human

monitors going so that you could multitask better - watch porn on one

LX:

I installed the latest demo version today from the Commercial Applications CD2
in 9.0 PowerPack. First off, this demo looks a lot more impressive than the
earlier one. I tried some simple stuff with it. It was slow going, but that
was mostly because Varicad is _not_ an AutoCAD clone. It has a different
interface, different terminology, different everything. I plan to give it
some more time over the weekend, and we'll see what happens. Here's my take
so far:

1. While $399 for the software, $99 for a one year upgrade subscription, and
$99 for a printed manuals (w/CD-ROM) isn't a lot of money in the context of
3D design and drafting packages, it's far more than I'm willing to pay just
to satisfy my curiosity.

2. As installed, Varicad is strongly Eurocentric, but there does seem to be
support for ANSI standards. (No flames, please. I'm talking about
presentation here 3rd angle vs 1st angle, formatting and presentation of
dimensions, hatching conventions, etc. Metric vs inch is off-topic.)

3. Varicad is 3D-based, and that's A Very Good Thing. In other words, the
design process starts by building a solid model from which the 2D drawings
are derived later. That is a critical feature for designing complex parts
such as molded plastic components, castings, and sheet metal bits, but the
productivity gain comes at the price of a very steep learning curve.

4. Varicad doesn't do a lot of things: buildings, architectural design,
kitchen remodels, plant layouts, mapping, piping, etc., but it does do
mechanical design, and that's fine with me.

5. Minor glitch: Doing solids requires a minimum of a 16mb video card with
OpenGL support, and my Matrox G200 Millennium isn't up to that. Seems OK with
the 2D stuff. (FWIW, I can do AutoCAD solids on this rig. Don't ask.)

6. I couldn't find any reference to a mailing list or forum at their website.
Not good.

are there, the utils for tweaking it are there - MDK works happy with it
- what wrong with this card that you're chucking it for something else?

Sorry, but I love my NVidia...they're great cards!

[newbie] Video Card

2003-01-24 Thread Russ
Hi All,

I have a NVidia Geforce 2 64 meg card.

I have to get anther card for another of my computers. I thought about
getting one that is more compatible with Linux and putting it in this
machine and putting the Geforce 2 in the other. Can anyone recommend a
comparable card that does good with games as well?

I purchased this Geforce2 card specifically so I could play Tribes 2.

Thanks
Russ

But qcad is only 2D. On the bright side, a browse around somewhere like
Sourceforge will reveal a number of 3D CAD projects in the making.
There are also a lot of specialist CAD tools around (mainly related to
engineering) - they wouldn't be much use to someone looking for an
AutoCAD substitute, but since a number of them are Open Source, the code
base could be of use to other projects, perhaps.

In other words, the bad news is that there is still no substitute for
AutoCAD; the good news is that if you wait a year or so, there almost
certainly will be. We had to wait years for a decent substitute for MS
Office, but it arrived in the end.

Could be that you have a side-winding hard drive.

Actually, could be on the way out. If you have the drive sitting in any
other position than the one that works, and it chokes and pukes, there
is a problem with the heads in the drive.

Try a different hard drive - you might find that no matter what position
you put your case, it will work (with a different drive).

with this thought in mind I've saved this message as a template on my

anyone misses the post it will show up again and again and again on the
list for those poor souls that missed it the previous time it was

plugins for Mozilla/Netscape...etc...

anyway...if you're needing the java plugin for Netscape, or Mozilla go
follow the link below and you'll be able to download and install the
java plugin. And by the way...this does not require the download and
install of Sun's JDK or JRE packages. This is a seperate "browser" plugin.

So long as any of it helps John you're very welcome. :-)

When you do get back to it you may want to see if there's been a beta3
released. Something tells me the beta versions will come fast and furious for
a while and if there is the problems (most of them anyway) with beta1 and
beta2 will be gone. The ones reported anyway.

Then there will be new things to break.

Holler and see what the rest of us have busted. It may save you some time. LOL

I don't remember gateway in kppp - but that would be because I was not
connecting over a lan. You don't need gateway for a single modem connection.
If this is a cable adsl connection that may be different - I don't know.

This and your related comment on the original post seem to me to point to the
dns problem. I presume that your 'host eurobell unknown' comes when you put
their url into a browser? If so, then it means that either you have spelled
it wrong - unlikely - or that you are not connecting to a dns server to
resolve it. Your isp will assign you a number, but unless you have told your
setup the primary (and secondary if you know it) dns lookup address for your
isp it cannot find the numerical address that it needs to translate a url.
Does that make sense to you? It should sort out the web browsing.

For email, the usual problem is the login. ISPs have different ideas about
how you need to give the username (tiscali, for instance, require the whole
[EMAIL PROTECTED], but most just require abc). Don't forget that it is case
sensitive, as is your password. Another stumbling block is the
authentication protocal. Eurobell should have told you whether it uses, for
instance, chap or pap. Get the wrong one and you will get no further.

This is a big plus. If you go into the windows setup and go through the
properties screen for tcp/ip noting down every setting that's there it should
help. Post the settings here if you need any clarification.

It's absolutely ludicrous. They probably can't talk you through as easily as
in windows, because they can't see the screen layout, but the questions and
answers are exactly the same whether it is windows or linux.

Sorry I can't be too specific, as I don't know your setup, but I hope this has
given you a few pointers. Come back with the windows settings if you need
to.

2003-01-24 Thread Boulytchev, Vasiliy
So, as I try this as root, I get
logs: identd[32758]: fopen("/proc/net/tcp", "r"): Permission denied
And running daemons other than root such as sshd and ftp is a must, what
do you mean you can not run those without having root privs?

Try opening MCC and then security and turn off the firewall by clicking on the square that says everything, no firewall, then apply and then try your internet connection again. If that solves the problem you should be able to turn the firewall on again and still get a connection. HTH  Dennis M.

Anne,
Thanks for your offer of help. I've put the text of my original message at
the bottom of this reply so you can read it and see where I started from and
those who have already seen it can stop scrolling before they get that far
down.

I can't surf, send or receive email, or access newsgroups. I've set up my
account details in all the applications I can find - Kmail etc. - and I
don't mind which I use for the moment... will probably develop a preference
over time, but for now would be happy with anything I can get to work!

I have followed "et"s suggestion - found "gateway" in kppp and changed it to
0.0.0.0, but still no luck.

I have also added the DNS server IP addresses as instructed by Derek.

Still getting the same error message "host eurobell unknown". Unless
Mandrake/Linux follows the Microsoft tradition of generating error messages
that are completely unrelated to the actual problem, I assume the problem is
something to do with "host" - but what?

Would be grateful for any further suggestions.

Text of original message from 22/1/03:

I'm a very newbie running Mandrake 9 and I can't get it to connect to the
internet.

My ISP is eurobell. I've set up the connection in MCC, and that bit seems to
work OK - it dials, verifies my username and password, and is clocking up a
penny a minute for the connection when I test it - but I can't get any
further than that.

I've tried setting up my details (username, password, server names as
supplied by eurobell), but when I use the various applications to try to
access www, usenet, email accounts I just get error messages - message
wording varies depending on the application, but amounting to "host eurobell
unknown".

I've checked the documentation on the machine and printed out several trees
worth, but still can't crack this. The only documentation I found that seems
relevant told me that the host name should be in the /etc/hosts file. This
is what my /etc/hosts file contains:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.50 home

No mention of eurobell in the file. Should I add something here and, if so,
what?

I've been reading this list for a couple of weeks and picked up some useful
tips, but nobody seems to have exactly the same problem as me. Luckily I
still have the old Win 98 machine running so I can access the mailing list -
but it is annoying to have to unplug the modem and keep moving it from one
machine to the other as they are in different rooms!

I tried eurobell's tech support, but their first question was "which version
of Windows do you have?" and the conversation went downhill from there.

Can anyone help? TIA

0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 removed and 26 not upgraded.

My question is, why are those packages being "kept back"? Is this an

That's been updated and fixed in cooker I believe John. Could you just use
"generic mouse" settings long enough to get the install completed? Then
configure the mouse? We are dealing with a beta.

Are you reading the kernel messages or are you actually doing a text install?
Swapon happens at boot as far as I know.

Beta problem. Fixed in cooker I think. It's (again) possible to do it later
after updating.
>
> 4) When asked to present CD1 for printer , it fails

KERNEL problem. The kernel shipped with the beta (1 and 2) is calling all ide
removable drives as scsi which makes it almost impossible for a gnubie like
me to figure out. Someone suggested passing the kernel "hdx=ide-cd" for
cdroms and dvdroms. Mine wouldn't even find my floppy drive. The latest
kernel (available later today according to Juan Quintela) should fix this and
more. In the meantime you can use a different kernel for the install using
"blank.img." The INSTALL.txt file talks about that. You actually are able to
install using your own kernel. The one in cooker now
(kernel-2.4.21.pre3.2mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm)
may actually alleviate some of your troubles. I can actually manually mount my
cdrom now where I couldn't with the previous kernel. I'll let you know if it
works should I decide to try it that way. Or I may just try a hard drive
install of the full cooker I have on a drive here.
>
> 5) The install hangs "please wait making printer port available for CUPS"

No printer on this box, sorry. I do remember reading a few threads about this
on cooker ml though. Expert too IIRC. May be worthwhile to have a look at the
archives. Yesterday and the day before I think; may be enough to get you on
track I hope.

Have you tried accepting the resolution offered and adjusting later? I changed
colour depth at summary screen from 24 bpp to 16 bpp (I have an old Creative
Graphics Blaster 16 MB) due to a limited card and it held. Test always hung
for me too.
>

Probably cause it can't find the floppy. It may be a part of that scsi stuff
that's "slapping" the cdrom. Or a broken mkinitrd, or broken mkbootdisk. Or
any combination thereof.

Design choice. That option has been turned off. Or so it was written on the
cooker list.

More beta gremlins. I think you'll have to accept that and get the install up
then boot back to 9.0 and add the links to the boot directory.

Maybe because I only tried to change a few things and didn't try to select any
individual packages or alter anything except at the summary screen but I
managed to convince the bootloader to change to console login by preference.
Then just log in and "startx" worked for me. As I mentioned, it's a beta. For
example at the services at boot screen there are no buttons and if I tried to
turn any on or off (the first three times I tried to install) the machine
hung forever. I just ignored this and hit enter at that screen under the
assumption that I could turn services off in drakconf after the fact.

One final thing John. You'll possibly (when you do get a desktop after login)
find that you are unable to access any network. The network will be up but it
won't have access to your ISP's name servers. Before you do any more with the
beta might I suggest that you grab a copy of

[newbie] M9.1beta2 Install 2nd attempt

2003-01-24 Thread John Richard Smith
This install was done on preformatted /dev/hda7 in ext2 , no formatting
in the install
proceedure at all.

F1 expert install route

1)Failed to detect and install Scroll wheel mouse .

2)Fails to detect /swap partition, at least it does not tell me it has.

3) No saved package facility.

4) When asked to present CD1 for printer , it fails
to detect the CD1 when presented

5) The install hangs "please wait making printer port available for CUPS"

6) then error message "An error occured foomatic-configure failed"

7) fails to detect 1280x1024@60hz screen resolution and when manually
chosen it fails to hold.

8) It detected Generic geforce3+ XFree4.2.1 ok, but returned
"error message, server SUGA is not available (should be in
/mnt/usr/X11R/XFree86)"
result is a failed screen driver installation , no test etc.

9) The whole process skips creating a boot disc altogether

10 ) None of the LH side panel scripts are sensitive to cursor clicks.

11) I was forced to install lilo, which was not by choice as I wanted to
do a floppy boot or failing that M9.0 boot script/lilo.conf job, and as
a result it's lilo was installed in the MBR.

The reboot went ok as far as a consol login , but of course no xwindows
meant I could not get a graphical desktop. I tried to think
of a way I might be able to remidy this but coundn't think of any. I
suppose if you are at a local host terminal it must be possible to install
a driver in cojunction with the installation cd's but if so someone
would have to explain.

I really want some way of building on this so that lilo does not get
installed and a Xwindows screen driver setup is achieved.

There was nothing left for me to do but reinstall M9.0's lilo to the MBR.

Maybe I should have refined the focus on that S(mart) A($$) comment. In
whatever country the ISP is probably using people at all 'customer interface
levels' hired for minimal pay with absolute minimum technical acumen. These
people are then given a script of questions and answers they have to follow.
One of the first things the "Helldesk" resident learns is usually; if it
should be forwarded to a higher level and you do so that higher level denizen
can (and usually will) make your life a living hell should you forward too
often; under the natural dictum of maximum gain for minimum effort.

Besides she or he probably started where the 'helldesker' is.

Best is to;
"Woops! Damn!" those "problems" before they start, in the interest of
self preservation.

If it sounds as though I have a dim view of; and nearly zero respect for, the
majority of humanity, it's probably 'cause it's quite true. But in this case
the above statements are based on first hand personal observations.

If you are running KDE then www.kde-look.org is the place for themes/wallpaper

You will also find mandrake RPMS for several nice icon sets/themes/wallpapers
at Texstars download site
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.0/rpms

In particular look out for
crystal-icons -really nice icon set from Connectiva - will be default for
KDE3.1
freecurve-artwork - The BlueCurve theme RedHat fans like.
Geramik - A really popular theme
kde3-kspashml - Animated log on spash
keramik - I think that is geramik for KDE
mosfets-liquid - my favourite KDE theme
wallpaper - A collection of nice wallpapers
xmas-wallpaper - A bit out of season

Themes, icon sets, and wallpapers are all selected in KDE Control Centre Some
themes like mosfet have to be configured in several different places.

As for screensavers. The default KDE screensavers are not especially good. But
if you do not use kde, or take the trouble to disable the KDE screensaver you
can use xscreensaver and xscreensaver-gl which are RPMs on your Mandrake CDs

xscreensaver-demo in a terminal will show you the screensavers available, and
the command xscreensaver -nosplash & when you start your session will enable
the screensavers. There are also some really nice new OpenGL screensavers for
xscreensaver available here

I suspect some loose connection 'somewhere'. The stranger it becomes: when
the thing shuts down, there is still power (led on mainboard stays on as do
the leds on both NICs).

>But tell me, just why on earth did you try booting it on its side??! Or was

Yes, that happened by accident. I got up and accidentally leaned on the side
of the machine and 'click'. And it is still running (uptime 22 hrs).
This PC is over 1.5 years old and the problems only started some months
ago...
That beats and bites.

Thanks for the tips

Can't agree. While generally I think isps should try to do something about
spam, I don't see this as any different from their pov than any other spam.
It is annoying but harmless unless you are greedy/stupid enough to fall for
it. The Darwin Awards have a lot going for them.

yes, I can delete stuff by draggin to it.. BUT.. I can't empty it, and if I

Sorry; but I have to disagree. Arrogant stupidity should always be a "Capital

Hello all,

Forgive this OT post, but can someone point me into the right direction?
My PC is going nuts. When it is upright, it won't boot properly (powers
off
immediately after switching it on). When it lies on the side, the system
keeps running without a problem when switched on.
Already had the entire internals apart and back together again, to no
avail.
What can be wrong here??? I tried all I can think of.

Thanks.

Have you tried different windowmanagers?

I've had laptops with lower specs running 9.0 (well it wasn't fast!) just NOT
using KDE or Gnome.
Give Icewm a try or windowmaker to see if that gives any relief --it should.

Aside from that: turn off as many services at boot time as you can. daemons
like crond an atd use up quite a bit of memory when they're at work. And
there's more, a lot more depending what use you want to put the laptop to=:o)

Also: boot into text first (init 3) and later into X with the command startx.
That way you'll have the opportunity to finetune your system without it
locking on you.

With a P133 it's not going to be a mean and lean machine but with 80M it
should be useable.
Hang in there we'll get you going:o)

Good Luck,
HarM

Ben,

You may also want to take a look at Fluxbox. It's even lighter then
IceWM. I'm using that Window Manager exclusively on a Toshiba Protege
with only 64MB of RAM and I've got no complaints at all.

not really "safe" IMHO, as cooker (like rawhide) is the "expermental" or
"testing" part of the distro, to be used only on machines that are not
critical or production machines. Now if you want to try the file, it is most
likely going to work, and even more so if you upgrade to "cooker" all the
way, but it is _likely_ (and it's porpuse is) to have and find some bugs.
Also glibc is a very key componant, and a change in it may mean a complete
"no-go" for the kernel you have now.

NOw Rob,,, we are "NEWbies" and a bunch of folks too lazy to look at google...
but really, there was some discussion a while ago about how it feels when you
are "lost in the ether" to recieve "STFW-G" or "RTFD", and how we would try
and be as civil as possible about it, and even go so far as to do the search,

I is often pretty hard for someone (that just figured out that the cupholder

spills the coffee each time too) to figure out just which of those 27,000
pages really have some info that might help and are not just selling stuff.

It is a cooker rpm and available from any of the cooker mirrors.
I am running 9.1 which is cooker.

Not saying it can't be done but you may be letting yourself in for a
whole list of problems if you try to update your 9.0 system with to the
cooker glibc.

Yes. I read about it here http://212.100.234.54/content/6/28842.html
and here
http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4252

It exploits a bug in a version of mpg123 to run arbitary code when you play a
malicious mp3 file. It can damage files in your *user* account (so long as
you are not running as root)

The version of mpg123 shipped with Mandrake is not vulnerable, and the
alternative mp3 player mpg321 is not affected.

There was also a bug found in mozilla a while back which would allow a
malicious website to run arbitary code in your computer.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html

I am no security expert, but I do not think Tripwire would protect against
either of those attacks. As I understand it tripwire works by comparing files
checksums against those previously calculated to find evidence of intrusion.
(As can msec)

While Linux is not immune to malicious attack, it is certainly better
protected than Windows, but you should still get your security updates
regularly.

libc.so.6 is provided by glibc.

rpm -q --whatprovides libc.so.6
glibc_lsb-2.2.90-11mdk
glibc-2.3.1-7mdk

The program you are trying to compile is looking for a specific version
of this lib.
It requires that provided by glibc-2.3.1.
With Mandrake 9.0 you have glibc-2.2.5, so the program will not build.

Yep. This was discussed yesterday. Depending on the security level you have
set Mandrake Secure will go around your system hourly tightening up security
holes which could be exploited by an intruder.
You can either stop making security holes, or reduce your security level so
msec stops complaining.
The table in Mandrake ControlCentre>Security>SecurityPermissions shows the
permissions msec will enforce on different folders at the various security
levels.

If I recall, this has something to do with a security sentry - a setting
in the MCC that will, every so many hours, make system wide changes to
the security of the system. Can't quite remember if it was in connection
with Shorewall or just MDK security - but you might wanna have a poke

You will have to allow normal users to run pppd. As Root, edit
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0

Set USERCTL="yes"

Cross your fingers and try again with /sbin/ifup ppp0 in the Modem
Lights connect box.

I hope that works for you.

Raffaele Belardi wrote:

To check the path(s), type

I don't think java.rpm sets up the path to the executables. You can do
it by hand adding it to your .bashrc. Or, you can create a
/etc/profile.d/local.sh as root, and put those settings there, so they
will be loaded by all the users when they login.

For example, here's my /etc/profile.d/local.sh (but for .bashrc it would
be the same):
-
# Configuration variables added by me

# variables for Forte Java Developement environment
export JDK_HOME=/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.0/
PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.0/bin

# variable for Mozilla 1.0
export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/local/mozilla
-

The ony advantage I see of having a ~/bin is that its content will not
be deleted (provided /home is in its own partition) when you upgrade the
distribution. But be warned that normally rpm packages will install in a
system directory (i.e. /usr/local or the like) and it will not be easy
to convince them to use ~/bin instead. I abandoned the ~/bin almost
immediately.
Unless, of course, you plan to develop your own stuff. In this case, a
~/bin and the proper path is the way to go.

raffaele

Or, you could simply place symlinks from the java executables into
/usr/bin and you wouldn't have to fuss with any of the PATH stuff cause
/usr/bin is already in all the $USER paths.

I used to say the same about cleaning cookers. They always used to have sharp

While I agree that NT4 and W2K were more stable than win98, I've used all
three and my experiences have not been pleasant with any of them. W2K was
arguably the best, but it still gave me no end of problems. I saw far too
many bsods, and eventually crashed so badly that I could not even re-install.
I presume it left a stub in the mbr or somewhere equally essential. I have
some problems here on mdk 9.0, but they are nothing compared with my previous
headaches. Of course, I was told back in the 80's that I push my computers
too far, expecting them to be able to do absolutely anything that comes into
my mind

As for backups, I started on a ZX81, with the 16K memory pack strapped to the
back with insulating tape. Need I say more

I'd agree, except that some of them get killed from it..

they try to get you to come over to "help get things moving" and when you
get there
they put a gun to your head and make you withdraw every cent you have and
hand it over..

now I couldn't care less if they get suckered for all their cash, but even
greedy dumbass's shouldn't have to die from it..

I mean most places don't kill you for being a murderer, or a pedophile or
rapist etc,,, so being a greedy dumbass shouldn't involve a death sentence..

I report all the scam emails I get to the online repositories for such
things... and then i reply them with dummy smtp details and tell them to
f**k off and that they have been reported to their ISP /authorities etc...

since the return email and everything else is dummy, I don't get bothered by
replys, especially since not many of these wankers have the knowhow to track
me anyway...

but you are right, if they are so greedy, losing all their money is almost
suitable recompense..

That sounds complicated. All I do is assign my data directories to group
'users' making sure that all my users are in that group (you can omit some if
you need to, or make another group to work the same way), Give the group
users whatever permissions you need to, and make sure that it is applied to
all subdirectories. I have no problems. Most of my data is on fat32
partitions, and some of them are shared under samba. It works fine.
