well the 20fps was an average I got from 16-17 to 30 fps in almost high detail

As I recall there was some minor improvement with EAX set to off.
If you numbers are correct then I will surelly give it a try!

The config file is /etc/sysconfig/netwprk-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
You can edit it directly.

Or your trouble may be the statement in /etc/modules.conf loading the wrong
driver. You need a line saying
alias eth0 module_name

You are forcing urpmi to validate all the actual and relative provides
for both the pkgs you have installed and that which you wish to install,
not to mention the fact that this rpm was not built to run on any
platform except 9.2

ummm .. really?

You can use
# urpmi --allow-nodeps --allow-force kernel-2.6.0-0.test3.1mdk
but I would strongly discourage this

The 2.6.0-0.test is not a Newbie friendly kernel.

and I was so excited that Mandrake was finally a distro in which I
could change my kernel .. I ... who don't know anything about kernels
... and am not a linux pro ... sounded really cool.
Besides .. the reason that pushed me was that I heard that if
installing via this rpm I would just get a safe new lilo option and
could choose from there ... and thus I would be able to test what I
heard, that these new kernels are supposed to give more priority to
certain processes and thus make my linux appear to be running smoother.

If you are determined to try it I would strongly suggest you install
either the 9.2 beta2, or the RC1,
what does RC1 mean? Where can I get these? I've looked on the web .. I
found aproximative figures .. do you by any chance know an exact date
when the final 9.2 will come out?

which should be out today and then use
urpmi to install the test kernel or dl the kernel.src.rpm and rebuild it
for your current system.
I've never installed a src.rpm ... is it painfull? what would one have
to do ?

packages in ML9.1

but only in ... ?? 9.2 ? or where? from my knowledge cooker package
simply means that if I'm searching for say the newest Gimp, and it's
normally distributed in tar.gz, I might find a cooker mdk.rpm ... which
is cool. What don't I know?

. Maybe you can rebuild a source rpm from cooker,
I'm not sure, but running a 2.6.0test kernel in ML9.1 is no reasonable
option IMHO.
Btw, kernel 2.6.0test3 is a kernel from the development branch of
the Linux kernel. It's possible these development kernels break
your system or cause filesystem corruption!

:-((
but I too want a new kernel, like people using other distros brag having
... one which does fancy stuff ... like giving high priority to user run
apps like windows has an option of doing ... and which supports
fmask&dmask for mounts ... and I hear all sorts of nice stuff about
these blackboxes (to me) that are called kernels ...

Thanks for the tip Derek, but no-joy.  The system still doesn't remember the new card (or the old one) after a power cycle.

I'm looking for quieter fans/better heat dissipation, but would also like the machine to remember it's settings.

Which files (or which fnie manual) should I bee looking in?

Anyone have this running?

I d/l'ed the file (504 megs), set it to be executable, then ran it as root
(I
also tried my normal user account). It gives this error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] darklord]# sh armyops190-linux.bin
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing America's Army: Operations for GNU/Linux
1.9.0...Extraction
failed.
Signal caught, cleaning up

I also tried running it with "./armyops190-linux.bin" Same result.

I copied it to the other 2 comps and tried it there. It would not work on my

12 yr olds, but it did try on my 10 yr olds (wouldn't install though - it
takes 1307 megs of space and he's got a smallish HD split between Linux and
Windows).

The question is, why wouldn't it install on:

Mandrake v9.1 download edition
Mandrake v9.0 full boxed set

but would install on:

Mandrake v9.0 download edition:

???

Thanks.

Actually, Lanman, that *is* what caused the problem. If you check the
full headers of a thread you will see a list of reference such as

References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

This is what is used to keep threads together, so if you erase a

Strange, it has a checkbox for divx in the search engine, but not one
result came up that showed it played divx.

However, I did notice that there is a section on converting divx to vcd,
how is the quality on that?

My getpix script will do this--you're welcome to take a look at it and
see how I did the renaming scheme, which is basically called like
"getpix -n bankholiday" which would give you "bankholiday-001.jpg"

http://clevername.homeip.net/scripts/

Assuming you're mounting your smartcard reader, you can use the entire
script as-is, just change the variables to suit your needs.

job. It's a little awkward IMHO, but try *man rename*. At least
I had some succes with the same problem.

Cool. Is there a way to do this to albums also?
I could put the cassette deck on "record" and run the RCA plugs from tape deck
"monitor" to the "line-in" on the sound card, just wonder if there is a
better way... :)

HaywireMac; No knickers to worry about! You might be right about the hijack, under the
conditions you specified.
I didn't see a hijack happening, because my thread was under a different name. Just so
you know, I've never even
seen any list of rules, didn't even know they existed until now. When I signed onto
the list (dinaosaurs were just
fading out of existence back then, LOL!), there weren't any rules mentioned there.
Usually, I use the "reply" function
in my email client to respond or to post to the list. Since the function is there, I
just make use of it. But if I'm changing
the contents of the subject-line, I interpret that as a new thread. Maybe that's where
I'm going wrong?
Or maybe the server just handles it that way.

Perhaps if someone created a HowTo and made it a bit more obvious than a list of rules
that some don't even know about?
However, if I misspoke, I also apologize. You just caught me by surprise on that one!
Have you got a link to these rules?

That's why having a Knoppix CD is so handy - boot the "showroom" box

You know that is a very good idea, I've got a knoppix Cd as well , so I

Ah, that might be the problem - don't have a line out on it. Its an older
portable type cassette player (yea - read cheap!). Since we have 3 comps in
our house, everyone uses their comps for music - we don't have a stereo
system, as is.

Guess I'll have to try and find a cassette player with the line out.

You have added a 'cooker' source but are not running cooker.
You are forcing urpmi to validate all the actual and relative provides
for both the pkgs you have installed and that which you wish to install,
not to mention the fact that this rpm was not built to run on any
platform except 9.2

You can use
# urpmi --allow-nodeps --allow-force kernel-2.6.0-0.test3.1mdk
but I would strongly discourage this

The 2.6.0-0.test is not a Newbie friendly kernel.

If you are determined to try it I would strongly suggest you install
either the 9.2 beta2, or the RC1, which should be out today and then use
urpmi to install the test kernel or dl the kernel.src.rpm and rebuild it
for your current system.

These are digital camera pix , the product of an event to which I would
like to add a replacement prefix for "dsci" to reflect the nature of
the
event and a date, so in this case I might choose something lile
"bankholiday240803 etc.

Can someone suggest a script to do this for me so I don't have to
manually retype the file name in properties for each file. It would be
nice if I could run the script and it asked me for a syntax , which
would be different in each event , and then added it in place of the
bit
of syntax to be removed.
I think it might be nice if I could just copy the bash script file to
the source directory and run it from there, dunno though .

Possible ?

Also out of pure curiosity why does the file names all end in " * " ?

Sounds like Bug 1881 I have reported it every release since 8.1

After going through the DrakConnect Wizard. Exit the wizard with 'Finish'.
then exit DrakConnect with 'Cancel'. It should be OK then.

If this helps you go to http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1881
and vote to have it fixed.

Refresh rates for TFT's are behind the curve unfortunately to some
degree... so waiting for an 85hz refresh might be a year or so John.

[newbie] DrakConnect forgetfull

2003-08-25 Thread Sabin, Matthew
Title: DrakConnect forgetfull

So I'm happily surfing away and my 'net conenction slows to a crawl.
Then is stops entirely.

After many attempts to make bits flow (even checked the cable to see if the cat had eaten through again) I've concluded that the via-rhine on board LAN has turned to slag.

The case is open anyway, so I install 3Com PCI NIC, move the cable and boot the machine.

Once the desktop appears -- no connection.
Fine.
Run MCC > Network & Internet > DrakConnect -- wizard and all that.
Click "Yes I want to save the changes, that's why I made them" buttons.
Everything works.
I have to shut the machine off at night as the fans sound like jets idling.

Each morning I have to go through the MCC > ... > Everything works scenario.

DrakConnect never seems to save my changes.

Which RAEDME or fine-manual should I be looking in to find out which settings DrakConnect is changing and not saving?  Or more to the point which files I could edit myself and get this overwith?

I find it actually more humorous to do things like try to telnet into a
box via script with an assortment of strange names - that always makes
the admin suss - nothing "modern" - but strange names...like
kurt_vonnegut, president_clinton, [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] - then
it makes the admin have to pour through heaps of logfiles to see if the
box has actually been compromised - even when it hasn't - just pisses
off the admin having to do that, don't ya reckon?

Well, from the way the thread looks here (*possibly* due to threading
issues with the list, so if that is the case, I most humbly apologize),
your 9.2 beta post was in reply to Stephen Kuhn, who was replying to
the thread started by Claire Suttle about her problem with getting good
9.1 ISOs. In that sense it *appears* you "hijacked" Claire's thread,
possibly reducing the likelyihood that she would get more responses.

I checked the list archive and it shows the same way, so it is
*defintitely* not a problem on my end.

Anyway, don't get your knickers in a knot.

Oh, and BTW, the list rules specifically ask you to limit your line wrap
to 68-72 characters, IIRC.

http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=kernel-2.6.0-0.test3&submit=Search+...&system=&arch=
says it's a Mandrake Cooker package. You shouldn't try to use cooker
packages in ML9.1 .

It's wy less complicated than that...if you have an e-mail

In Sylpheed, or any mailer that will allow sig from command:

open a terminal window, su - to become root..

then type:

Then edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network

edit the line:

HOSTNAME ..
to reflect the new hostname.

Then edit /etc/hosts file to make sure that it resolves your new hostname
properly.

Done... easy huh?

No doubt you could have done that with webmin or netconf or MCC, but why

Try the regular line out on the Cassette player instead of mic. You will have
to get a special chord from someplace like radio shack, it has two rca audio
plugs into one mic jack. This gives you preamp and filter so you should have
a much better audio signal. HTH

[newbie] lilo config

2003-08-25 Thread Russ
Hi All,

I originally set this computer up as a dual boot with the Windows as
default (for my daughter). I no longer have the Windows partition but I
cannot figure out how to remove that link from lilo.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Russ

Re: [newbie] Lilo config

2003-08-25 Thread Jason Greenwood
Here we go again, since you seem to have missed it:

Yes, there are 2 ways to do this. Go into the Mandrake Control Center
and change boot options.
Boot>DrakBoot>Lilo/Grub Mode (Configure)>Then ok at the first dialog,
then you can delete entries and set a new default.
OR
Go into /etc/lilo.conf in a text editor as root and then edit the file
by hand. Once you have done this, run "lilo" at the command line as
root. Just type "lilo" and it will make your edited file "live" for the
next reboot.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Jason

John:
In my experience, the first thing that a lawyer tells a client involved in a
lawsuit is, "Don't say anything to anyone. Remember that neither the press
nor the public try the case, the judge and and jury do." My take is that
McBride (and yet-to-be-indicted co-conspirators) are doing all that they can
to run the stock price up and hope that someone (IBM) will buy them out.
Clever idea, but it is a felony, as Darl will learn when his new cellmate
decides to ignore the "Mc" and makes Darl his new Bride for the next 5 to 7
years. Now, that's discomfort (or so I'm told).

Well, anyway, it worked, thanks so much, this has been driving me nuts
for months.
Strangely, it has made no difference with CD burning or otherwise so
far, ROX mounts the CD automatically, I'll post if there's any
unpleasant consequences tho.

Does God hate Supermount? ;-)

Now, he says to disable supermount (this BTW explains why the install
workded fine in 9.0 but not now in 9.1) with supermount -i?
Can I then reenable it? Or will I be forever required to manually mount
CDs, cuz I really don't like the idea of that, perhaps out of an
irrational fear of screwing other things like playing CDs with MPlayer
or Grip and such...
Could you or someone allay these fears before I attempt this?

If you want it back just do supermount -i enable. That should do it.
