Re: [newbie] Halt/Reboot buttons not available at Login Screen

2005-03-26 Thread DAN WALKER
I have exactly the same problem. I have googled but no answer. I messed in the menu and found it!!

If you have KDE, press the start (cannot think what else to call it), system, configuration, kde, system, login manager.

In there, select shotdown, and you can change the allow shutdown option top only root. If you do this from a VNC session, will have to login for real on the system and log back out to see the reboot and halt options.

Thanks

Grip is best if you want to rip files from CD, but konqueror also can be very
useful.
Press the 'services' button in your konqueror sidebar and you will see the
'Audio CD browser' (If you cannot see the sidebar hit F9 )

From the audio CD browser you can drag and drop audio files from the CD
in .wav, .ogg, or .mp3 format.

Note: Because mp3 is covered by patent Mandrake does not support creating
mp3's out of the box. You will have to declare a urpmi source for 'plf' by
going to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and install the lame and liblame0
packages.

As for file formats, as I mention above mp3 is covered by patent and any time
you use it a gentleman from the Fraunhofer institute is entitled to turn up
on your doorstep demanding money. So us geeky open source types prefer .ogg.
It is 'free' software and better quality than mp3 anyway.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/4416

To convert between file formats there is a neat command line utility called
'sox' Install the sox package and then enter #sox in the url line of
konqueror for instructions.

Use the cut tool, either by selecting it in the main window (the knife

Then click within the selected area to do the cut. Save the image, or

Yes - it's abit of a learning curve. Fortunately, if I do have to

But this must be your choice.
Should you decide to go for a rescue attempt then lets start at the

Try doing this: search for, download and burn to floppy the tomsrtbt

windows. Have a read of what you find.

While within windows send us a copy of /etc/lilo.conf ~ a copy of

At present, I take it that you cannot even get to the login screen ?

Another solution is to change your display manager. You could use kdm or

From the Mandrake Control Centre, you should be able to configure your

Try looking under Tools - Auto Correct/Auto Format - Auto Correct - Options

Then un-check the boxes for URL Recognition. No guarantees, I haven't tried it

It is, indeed, a nuisance when all you want to do is correct a typo or some

Hi Rosemary,
Yes, it should have been cd / and not cd. The reasion for that is
so that your current directory is not inside the partition you are
trying to unmount. Otherwise you would get a message about the partition
being in use. While you could do a shutdown without unmounting the
partition, and probably not have any problems, I like to play it safe
when working remotely.
End result - we have a tempary fix for one source of trouble. But we
still have the origional problem. The next step is to see if we can
isolate it a bit. We have a couple of ways to go here. MOre then I had
thought we would, because of the boot menu choice you use to boot the
system. You have said that you are not using the linux entry to boot
the system. Was there a problem where the system would not boot when you
used that option?

Things to try:
Boot with the linux-nonfb option, and see if that makes a difference.
Try the I (interactive) option when booting, and do not start ALSA.
Does the system boot then? This should give you a system without sound.
The hit I for interactive boot is displayed as part of the boot
messages. If you normaly have the bootsplash screen with the progress
bar showing when booting, you will have to hit the Esc key to see the
messages. There is a fairly long period between when the message is
displayed, and when you actualy enter the interactive mode. It does
several things after displaying the message, before it reaches the
decision point. (Display message, do other things while giving the user
time to react, then check for user responce. No user timeout delay.)

If the system boots fine without ALSA starting, then we can work on
getting ALSA fixed. If it doesn't, then we know the problem is elseware.
From the way the problem apeared, I suspect that there may be an
interupt sharing problem between the sound card and the USB interface,
but this is just a guess at this point.

MandrakeControlCentreNetworkInternet to set a hostname

If you did not set your MAC address as the hostname yourself, then your ISP is
doing it via DNS. To stop it, edit
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (or whatever) and add the line
NEEDHOSTNAME=no
Then restart networking and your hostname will revert to that set up in MCC.

The reason has to do with X server security. Normally, only the user
that owns the current X secession can have programs connect to it.
Starting an X based program requires that it connect to an X server.
Now, the user that is logged to the GUI owns the current X secession.
He/she/it has the keys needed to connect in their home directory. If
you use su to change to another user, the keys are still there. But
if you use su -, or if you change the envirement, then you no longer
have the keys, and the X server will not let you connect. Running
xhost + localhost or xhost localhost tells the X server that any
program on localhost can connect without needing the keys. This is ok
for a home system, but is a security risk on a more open system.

That sounds logical, Mikkel, except for two things. One - it doesn't always

[newbie] YOUR MESSAGE #57288 - IDE CONTROLLER PROBLEM

2005-03-26 Thread Linda Ken Bowmer
Hi,

I wondered if you could send me a copy of your message 57288, on the
above subject, from Mail Archive. It appears to have been deleted.

I am installing new hard drive (Samsung 6.4G) and during the set up I
have received this message General failure on the integrated secondary
IDE controller. The computer is an HP Vectra 525MCx.

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Hi, Ken. I don't know if anyone will have that message - what date (even
roughly) was it?

Meanwhile, let's see if we can help.

Is this a stand-alone drive? Or an additional one? I presume it's
additional, since you talk of the secondary IDE controller.

At what point do you see this message? Immediately on switch-on, or during
boot into Mandrake (or other distro)?

Does your BIOS see the drive?

How is it cabled - Master, Slave or Cable Select?

If it's CS - where on the cable is it located? It is an 80-wire cable, is it?
CS doesn't work properly on 4-wire cables as far as I know.

If it's M/S - have you checked the jumpers?

Anything else you can tell us that may have a bearing?

Follow the menu System|Configuration|Packaging|Remove Software and then query

removed.

Then urpmi the newest version of the package and install that one.

Here's hoping it works. :-)

Yes - I've no idea why it happens, but the cure is simple. In a root
  console, type
  xhost + localhost
and all will be well again.

  Anne

 Mikkel

[newbie] USB Mouse, Browser, Log on/Off, etc

2005-03-26 Thread Jason Oakley
Howdy.
I've just installed 10.1
I've not used MDK before, but have experience with Solaris and FreeBSD. I'm
trying to learn how MDK does everything via gui.

Every time I boot my computer (whether as root or a normal user) my USB mouse
doesn't work. I have to use TAB and cursor keys and ENTER to select a generic
ps2 mouse then it works and I can select generic USB mouse.
I tried editting /etc/X11/XF86Config and putting in /dev/input/mice but that
doesn't help. Every time I exit and come back I have to set the mouse up
again.

#2: I'm guessing I can only set my default browser as root? Firefox asks me
every time I start up. I would have thought it'd save it somewhere each user
has access to so everyone can have their own default browser.

#3: Log on/off
I know where to enable this feature for EVERYONE in MCC, but if I start MCC as
root or log onto it and enter the root password from a normal user account,
it won't save it for future use. I have to do it every time.
Randomly (it seems) I get the dragon log on/off menu. Most of the time even if
I set it in MCC the only option I get is LOG OFF. From that menu I can select
REBOOT or HALT.
If I select REBOOT, I get a small blank window in the middle of the screen
with two buttons (CANCEL and REBOOT iirc). Hitting REBOOT many times does
nothing, but HALT will work.

Kaffeine doesn't seem to like playing normal DVDs. I'm guessing this is just
an encryption problem? It always errors out with the plugin not found error.
AVI's on the hard drive work fine tho.

Logging onto a Windows share. I can connect to my globally shared drive when I
boot up, but I don't know how to configure MDK to mount my 'home drive' a'la
the NETLOGON.BAT script which runs if I boot into Windows. Should I just
fstab this mount or something?

Thanks.

Some people swear by the clean install though.

Rosemary
Hi Rosemary,
Yes, it should have been cd / and not cd. The reasion for that is
so that your current directory is not inside the partition you are
trying to unmount. Otherwise you would get a message about the
partition being in use. While you could do a shutdown without
unmounting the partition, and probably not have any problems, I like
to play it safe when working remotely.
End result - we have a tempary fix for one source of trouble. But we
still have the origional problem. The next step is to see if we can
isolate it a bit. We have a couple of ways to go here. MOre then I had
thought we would, because of the boot menu choice you use to boot the
system. You have said that you are not using the linux entry to boot
the system. Was there a problem where the system would not boot when
you used that option?

(Display message, do other things while giving the
user time to react, then check for user responce. No user timeout delay.)

If the system boots fine without ALSA starting, then we can work on
getting ALSA fixed. If it doesn't, then we know the problem is
elseware. From the way the problem apeared, I suspect that there may
be an interupt sharing problem between the sound card and the USB
interface, but this is just a guess at this point.

Mikkel
Hi Mikkel:
Rosemary has sent me directly some info which I think you ought to be
privy to.

Her lilo.conf gives the devfs=nomount append only on the one she

However, I'm unable to do this when I'm NOT within the system:

So, is there a file on the system that could simply give me this info by
 simply reading it ?

Probably /etc/fstab and /proc/partitions would give you some info.

(on the system in question)
You could make a simple one line script like df diskfree.txt
and make a cron job to run it. Then read the diskfree.txt file.

Thanks Mike, and I have somewhere else to look, but the system I need
this info from cannot be booted into right now because I believe
/etc/fstab is mucked up a little.
To that end I'm prepared to use tomsrtbt to look in on the system and
that is why I'm trying to find out how I can glean this info.
tomsrtbt has fdisk but that doesn't tell me the 'names' of the
partitions on the system I'm trying to restore. Still, there are ways, I
just wondered if the info was recorded
to make my task a little easier.

Again, greatly appreciate your input.

Your AMD 1.3 vs. a Celery is a toss up in synthetic benchmarks.
Which usually have nothin to do with real world performance, any OS.
The 'someone' that cited caches is right. There's another aspect,
which is Mboards' chipset. Here again you're better off with the
AMD cpu if you're usin it in conjunction with a VIA or SiS chipset
on a decent Mboard. The cpu is no better than the motherboard. With
Linux this is particularly true. Windoze based/designed for systems
like nForce* an Cyrix (C-*), should be avoided.

IMO, you're on the cusp. If you need to upgrade your choices
are either to go with 3+ Ghz 32 bit AMD/VIA, or go for a 64bit
system, also AMD. My impression is that 64 bit an the OS'/apps for
it have a ways to go for maturity. I'd venture in another year
64bit would be a better choice. It is afterall, inevitable.

You really need to give specs for your current system, an how
you use it, for more concise appraisals. The motherboard you're
usin is as, or more important than the cpu. As is ram (brand,
cas/latency, banking, etc.) and presupposes a good quality power
supply.

Then you can also tailor Linux to your hardware. For instance,
I'm usin 2.6.11-6mdkK74g preempt K7 gcc-3.4 (compiled for Athlon,
preempt enabled, 4gig ram ) an find it to be much more responsive
than 2.6.8 or 2.6.10 kernels compiled the same way. On a 3+Ghz
Athlon, VIA KT600, 1GB 2.5CL 4-bank ram system, mildly overclocked.
Mostly optimizations are only seen in compiling, an re-de-encoding
of large files (which I do a lot of).

OOzy

I've installed Linneighborhood on my MDK 10.1 installation. I can't

shares on my FreeBSD server.

Also, keep in mind that fast chips are bogged down by low-memory vid cards.
CPU power is worth something, but waiting for the graphical interface to
render is what makes a system seem to be slow. Unless you are shelling out
$$$ for a high-mem video card, the real differences (as Tom wrote) are what
you can't see--compiling and such.

. . . my suspicion is, that, the Celery is a very cut-down Pentium, and
that if you move to Celery you may see NO improvement :(

Yeah, I would move to a Athlon XP+ 2400, but do get the right RAM and mobo for
it. Luckily these days, the right video card is cheap.

May I suggest ImageMagik? It is on your disks, has lots of
features (resize, crop, sharpen, color balance, etc) and has a
shallow learning curve. The only thing I don't like about it is
 saving images is somewhat clunky.

If you go for GwenView, read the TWiki page first - you need the latest
