[newbie] Creating a website with video

2005-04-08 Thread Aidan Holmes
Sorry this is a little off topic, I have a friend that wants to add some
video to a website he has and wants me to help - but I've never done
this before. So far I have been using Mozilla to edit his site and I've
got no html knowledge at all. Is there someone who can point me in the

used the 'install software' part of mcc and searched for java - the

package I need to install to view a website with java - I'm using

Hi all,
This morning firefox asked me to look for an update for the theme I was
using. I clicked the update now button and things have gone horribly
wrong. All the buttons etc now appear as text. But the fonts are all too
big and everything overlaps. It's a mess! It's impossible to use the
firefox menus to change over to a different theme. I've tried the
good'ol windows uninstall - reinstall method but the new firefox install
just picks up the old preferences so the problem remains. Can anyone
direct me to some preference / config files I may be able to edit to get
my firefox useable again.

Hi Amy,
This is far from a technical answer but it may help. When I had problems
with my CD drives (they refused to unmount and so would not mount any
new disks that were inserted) I edited fstab as root and deleted the
lines that related to the mount points concerned.

On reboot I ran MCC as root and added the drives again - not sure if
this step is required for a USB drive though.

Are there any entries lingering in fstab that relate to your jumpdrive?

[newbie] any PDA users out there?

2005-01-30 Thread Aidan Holmes
Hi all,
am considering purchasing a PDA, I've googled on the topic and I fast
becoming confused with all the information out there - some of which is
grossly outdated so I'm not sure what to trust. What I really need is a
testimony from someone that has one...

Does anyone on the list use a PDA?
if so have you been able to install a distro such as familiar on it?
Whether using a linux distro or its original OS, how well does it and
the apps integrate with mandrake? (eg - PIM's)

I feel comfortable with 'Palm' but would prefer to dual boot an iPaq if
possible. (I believe there is flight management/recording software
available for glider pilots on the iPaq so this would be a bonus). I see
Mandrake includes Kpilot which looks to work with the Palm - is there
anything similar for the iPaq?

Sorry for asking so many questions - any feedback would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks, Aidan.

[newbie] Hooray for 10.1 : NEC Versa E600

Notice to any NEC Versa E600 owners: Mandrake 10.1 actually works! Just
thought I'd post this as I'd had problems installing all previous
versios of MDK on this machine and found a few others on this list in
the same boat.

Install went flawlessly, KDE works fine, inbuilt mouse and keyboard work
fine and the battery level monitor works fine, all of which refused to
work previously. After install I spent about another 2 hours with it
installing more apps and 'playing arround' without any problems or
stability issues. Only thing that remains to be done is find a driver
for the software modem.

I guess they were dinkum when they said 10.1 had improved laptop support.

I suppose what I really mean is I'm too cheap to use the broadband that

competitively priced IF you already rent a second line for the internet.
But we only use one phone line so ISDN would approximately double our

the setup and ongoing costs are more than I can justify as a home user.
So I've resigned myself to doing my big downloads at work and using

[newbie] Thank you to all

2004-12-15 Thread Aidan Holmes
Greetings fellow Mandrake users.
I'm writing this email to thank anyone who has ever helped solve
another's problems on this list. Especially those members whose replys
show that they are anything but a newbie. Surely their involvement in
this list must be purely service to the Linux community, rather than for
personal gain.

I have been using Mandrake since 9.0 (I'm now on 10.1)and a good 95% of
what I know about Linux has been learned from just watching this list,
or asking the occasional question. I am using mandrake now at work and
at home and it almost completely replaces Winblows. I very rarely have a
problem I cannot solve now (probably testament to Mandrakes stability
rather than my skill though).

I can say without a doubt that had it not been for the newbie list I
would still be using M$ Winblows today.

THANKS GUYS AND GIRLS, GIVE YOURSELVES A PAT ON THE BACK.
I look forward to the day I feel confident enough to help someone else out.

[newbie] Database Recommendations?

2004-06-21 Thread Aidan Holmes
Hello all,
Can anyone recommend a good database application for my needs? I have searched
the net on the subject and just get myself more and more confused about what
I need to run. MySQL seems to be the one everyone raves about, but it's far
too powerful for what I want.not that that's necessarily a bad thing,
but if it's too complicated then that's a problem.

I'm a glider pilot in my spare time and I'd like to keep a database on my
flying experience. I'd like to be able to enter data such as: Flight date,
duration, type of aircraft flown, solo/instructional and so on.
Then I'd like to get it to report on information such as:
Total hours flown
Total hours in a particular aircraft type (solo and/or dual)
Total hours solo and/or dual regardless of aircraft type...etc

Can anybody steer me in the right direction and let me know what packages I
would need to install?

Thanks - Aidan

quick one for you (I think) I like to listen to my .ogg files with XMMS while

Couldn't open audio

Please check that:
Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard

I assume that since it all worked fine 5 seconds before the error message, and
then agin once I dismiss it, the first two are OK, which leaves No other
program is blocking the soundcard

Is it possible to raise the priority of XMMS so that it blocks other programs

I use MDK on my test computer at work, it is on the shop LAN and we are

for getting large winblows drivers and burning them to disk, but for
some things the customers computer needs to be connected to the 'net itself.

Currently this ties up an additional phone, but If I could get them to
dial up my machine (Phone line running direct from modem to modem) and
share the net this way things would be much quicker and easier.

[newbie] Virus scanner for linux (no I havenn't lost my mind)

Does anybody out there know of/use/recommend a virus scanning package
for linux? I'm hoping to use one to scan clients hard drives without
having to leave mandrake and boot into Winblows XP.

I use a removeable HDD bay for this purpose as often once the virus is
in place, I cannot install antivirus on their computers. So, at present
I'm booting into Windows XP (sorry for swearing!) and using my copy of
Norton System Works to knock the virus on the head first.

I would dearly love to use Mandrake for this because at present it
involves two reboots: One into windows to update my own virus
definitions and check for any more winblows patches to protect my own
system. And the second to insert the clients HDD (non hot pluggable ide
bay) and scan the bloody thing.

[newbie] scrolling text crash on 9.2 startup

2003-11-14 Thread Aidan Holmes
Sorry if I'm being a pest, I have asked this question already under the
subject of NEC versa E600 laptop install but got no answers. This is
the last time I'll ask I promise :-)

I'm trying to install MDK9.2 on my wifes laptop. The installation goes
fine, but then when I reboot to run it for the first time things go
wrong. As the system boots up, the progress bar freezes approx 2/3 of
the way along. When I restart and press 'esc' for verbose mode, I see
all the things I usually see on my desktop machine - all the devices
and services that it starts, then a few lines after it starts alsa (it
moves too fast for me to see what the last service is) it starts
scrolling through lines and lines of text, too fast for me to read in
any detail. The text takes the following approximate form:

[cea17814] ??? [supermount]

the cea17814 is constantly changing, this is just one I managed to
read as it flew past. The supermount also often says kernel and as
for the question marks, I can't pause the screen so I'll never know
what that says. The longest I have left this screen scrolling past is
half an hourwith no progress.

Any ideas???

The only problem I encountered on setup was the X server, on the final
options screen it has not been configured automatically like it was
when I installed on my desktop. I go through and give it the following
options:
Flatpanel 1024X768 and graphics card radeon under ati - it had no
option for the raedon 340M or anything else closer. I have also tried
radeon under X4 but that does not change anything.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Any / all suggestions greatly appreciated.

[newbie] NEC versa E600 laptop install.

2003-11-12 Thread Aidan Holmes
Hi group!

I have sucessfully installed Mandrake 9.2 on the home pc, and managed
to convince my wife to let me put it on her work laptop. We formatted
last night and re-installed XP home on one half of the disk, then ran
the mandrake disks, installing linux on the other half (10 gig each)

The installation goes fine, but then when I reboot to run it for the
first time things go wrong. As the system boots up, the progress bar
freezes approx 2/3 of the way along. When I restart and press 'esc' for
verbose mode, I see all the things I see on my desktop machine - all

The versa E600 is a pentium4 1.9GHZ mobile with 256M RAM. The graphics
card is an ATI raedon 340M (as recognized in Windoze). This is the only
thing I can think of that would trip the computer up. On the final
options screen, the X server is not configured like it was with my
desktop. I go through and give it the following options:

[newbie] teething problems with 9.2

2003-11-05 Thread Aidan Holmes
I have just upgraded from 9.0 to 9.2 and My computer is now running
about as well as when I ran windows :o(

Firstly, In lilo if i select linux 9.2 boots ok, but into text mode.
The nice pretty GUI has gone and I don't know how to start it again. If
I reboot and select old_linux, the computer boots into 9.2 with a
working GUI. Is this major reason for concern? If not, how do I
re-configure lilo to boot old_linux as the default?

Secondly, I cannot use GnomePPP to connect to the internet (does the
fact that I operate in KDE have anything to do with it?) GnomePPP dials
ok and then says that it's connected, but a few seconds later spits out
an error message saying it's unexpectedly quit.
When I go through the mandrake control centre and use DrakConnect things
work OK (hence this email!). Is there an easier way to launch
DrakConnect, or is there a way I can get KPPP back again?

Sorry about asking so many questions,
I hope somebody can help.

2003-10-23 Thread Aidan Holmes
Hi Guys,
Quick question for you. What is a good (and hopefully inexpensive) AGP
4X card that supports open GL. I currently have a Riva TNT2 (32Mb).
This card is fine with the simpler games and office aps, but has a
frame rate of about 1 every 2 seconds when I load something like Tux
racer.
Any suggestions???

The TNT2 should perform better than that. Have you installed the hardware
acceleration enabled drivers from nvidia, or are you using the free nv
driver? Check your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file to tell.

No, I am just using the ones that came with my linux discs. I remember
updating my drivers from the Nvidia site when I still ran windoze. Can
you tell me how you install a device driver in linux?

Re: [newbie] annoying alarm on standby.

2003-10-12 Thread Aidan Holmes
Thank you all for your help with this issue.
I can now confirm that it's definately CPU overheating due to the fan
stopping. I left the case off, and then left the computer 'till I heard
the alarm again. Upon my return, the cpu fan had stopped, and the
heatsink was too hot to touch for more than a second or so. An added
bonus was that as i had turned the ceiling light off, i noticed that
the case power light was flashing in time with the beeps ( I assume
this means that it is a BIOS alarm), something I had not noticed with
the room brightly lit.

I plan to check out the bios options first when I get home (I'm at work
now) and see what difference that makes before trying to mess with any
more settings in the software.

To aswer a few of your questions, The heatsink does have a pad, not
thermal paste. and I have installed Mandrake myself from disks on the
front of a Linux how-to book from the local newsagets. (I also bought
red hat from the internet, but prefer the mandrake so far) I am running
dual boot with Win XP and plan to learn linux the sam way I did
windoze, by getting my hands dirty, playing arround and trying things
out. It means that this is about my fifth linux re-installation in as
many months but I'm learning alot. Hopefully I can completely phase out
windoze soon and run a M$ free machine.
