Andy, you can install any software on your system using Mandrake Control Center. The same dialog you used for changing the resolution but this time it's on the Software Management tab. But before you do read these following links: Here is a really good intro to installing software on Mandrake linux by, Zeb, although it shows screenshots of mdk 10, IIRC, it is still relevant. http://www.zebulon.org.uk/ICML0.HTML another good link with screenshots of mdk 10.1 plus much more .. http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/configuration101.html And, Have you had a chance to look at the Community TWiki ? http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/WebHome Specifically this page titled: All You Ever Wanted to Know About Urpmi But Never Dared Asking Before http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/UsingUrpmi this will help you understand urpmi soo much more .. [newbie] SUSE Pro 9.2 vs. Mandrake 10.1
Please, do not assume this is apostasy. What are the main differences between SUSE Pro 9.2 and Mandrake 10.1? My understanding of SUSE is that it includes integrated Opera 7.54, Firefox and Thunderbird on its DVD. I also understand that beginning about two weeks ago and continuing for a few weeks, one may download and burn into a DVD the Pro 9.2 version of SUSE. It is also my understanding that I would be able to run Libronix Bible Software on SUSE with its inclusion of Opera, and the addition of Cross Over from Codeweavers. I have tried to install Opera from The Club and failed miserably - undoubtedly due to my lack of know-how. Are there compelling reasons why Mandrake is still preferred? Am I misinformed? I think you want to change the overall system resolution to 1024x768, if this is correct, you want to do this with MDK control center, as you were guessing. Go to Star System Configuration Configure your Computer - will get you to a dialog that will ask for your root passwword. Once you login, This should be the Mandrake Control Center, select : Hardware screen resolution .. change this to 1024X768 and click OK. You will have to logout and log back in for your changes to take effect. I Hope that does the trick .. [newbie] Anyone use Bootit for backups and other utilities?
Boo tit was recommended in Fred Langa Newsletter for Linux backup and other utilities. Has anyone used it? What's your opinion? Extracted from Lang Newsletter: My current recommendation, BootIt, is perfectly happy imaging FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Ext2, Ext3 and ReiserFS file systems; and can directly write images to hard drives or to CD-R/RE or DVD+R+RE-R-RE drives. It's also a partition manager, letting you create/delete/copy/move/resize partitions at will; and it's a boot manager, too! Thus, this one $35 tool can replace a separate boot manager, imaging tool, and partitioning tool; typically costing over $100, combined. And it's vastly more flexible than any of the Windows-based backup/imaging/partitioning tools, because it's OS independent. See this special issue for more info, including BootIt's drawbacks: http://langa.com/newsletters/2003/2003-07-03.htmc OS-independent imaging (as above) is the gold standard of backups: Nothing beats it. But if you want a traditional backup solution for Linux, there are many offerings available, both free and commercial. For example, Linspire (formerly Lindows) has this step-by-step guide that can be adapted to almost any version of Linux: http://langa.com/u/7f.htm Plus, there are classic guides like this Linux Complete Backup and Recovery HOW TO ( http://www.linuxforum.com/linux-backup-recovery.php ); or animated guides like this IBM tutorial on How to back up your Linux machines ( http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/l-dw-linuxbu-i.html ; registration required); and lots more general info: http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+backup http://groups-beta.google.com/groups?q=linux+backup But again, a tool like BootIt works on *any* operating system, so it can back up whatever you're running, including dual-boot or other setups. [newbie] Cannot change font sixe or screen size/resolution in KMail
Hi all, Please forgive typos because I can't see/read what I am typing now. Fonts are simply too small to read. This is being typed with courier 10 pitch font, style regular, and set at 20 in size. What apprears on the screen is the same in 'size' regardless if size is set at 10, 20, or 64. 'Type' of font does change with what I desire to change to, style does not change - this phrase is typed in bold italiics but no change on my screen, and the size of fonts do not change on my screen. This sentance is typed at size 64 with no change in the actual font size on screen. The changes above are made from toolbar/settings/configure Kontact/appearance. From Kontact inbox screen I also tried to make changes using 'configure KMail'. Changing fonts through star/preferences/control center/peripherals/lookNfeel/fonts/general seem to affect all fonts *except* what I type in Kontact compose or Kmail. Changing 'screen size' or what I call 'resolution' works on icons and screen spacing but not on fonts. The resoution is always reset to 1280X1024. I try 1024X768 and settings in between those two and the change in resoution reverts back on end session or restart or shut down computer or ctrl-alt-backspace. My attempt to change screen size or resolution is made by clicking star/preferences/control center/oeripheraals/displayscreen size/ change size/aplly/OK. then the screen goes black for a second, then screen comes up again, with settings as they should be, asking for confirmation of screen size or not. [newbie] Start page of Konqueror??
Is there a way to have a specific web site open in Konqueror whenever it starts, using KDE (GUI) only? My broadband ISP, Road Runner, is a cable operation. The following site, http://www.rr.com/flash/;, is its home page and can be set by me to reflect the exact local news, local weather, and global headlines in which I am interested. Under Windows, I can use Tools/Options/General/Home Page/Use Current Page to open my browser to Road Runner's home page whenever I start Mozilla-Firefox or any other browser. MY question is: Is there a SIMPLE (meaning non-programming) KDE/GUI method, similar to Windows, to configure Konqueror to open to Road runner's home page whenever I start Konqueror? I do not understand programming, and at my age I don't want to have to start to learn it now. I would like to stop using Windows and I thought KDE/GUI would allow me to continue using my computer without trying to understand written commands, etc. That is the main reason I chose Mandrake. Is it possible to do what I want in Linux and specifically in Mandrake 10.1? Thank you, Andy BTW I am beginning to think I like Konqueror better than Firefox. It's appearance is cleaner, less clutter, and it is a lot faster. Also, the Road Runner start page using Windows has better fonts than when using Konqueror. I am not certain but I think the fonts in RR start page using Windows is Sans while the font when using Mandrake KDE is definitely different and much harder for me to use. Also the contrast is poor. I don't understand why this is true for Road Runner's home page under KDE - because other sites I open while using Konqueror are OK. Is there a way to fix this? [newbie] Installing kbluetooth
When I start 10.1 I get the message you may replace bluez's pin helper program with kbluepin; it is located in /user/lib/kdebluetooth now. How EXACTLY do I do this? What did it do and what will it do after the change? Sorry if these questions are so basic. Maybe I do not belong in the Linux or perhaps the Mandrakelinux operating system. What do you think? Because I do not understand *anything* about programming, should I not use 10.1? Please be honest about this because I hate to bother you all with such basic questions. I am using a $12.99 set of six CDs. I have ordered the packaged 10.1 from MandrakeStore. When they arrive should I delete what is now installed, and then install the MandrakeStore CDs Will that be preferred? Thanks again. Andy Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Start page of Konqueror?? Success Once only
Well, Dennis, the instructions you gave DID work, but for only one time. After a complete shut down, I attempted something I never did before. At the KDE 3.2 flash screen, I clicked on the globe icon and went directly to the start page I have been trying to get. However, I tried to recreate that success five more times and could not recreate it once. I tried only restarting and booting from a totally shut down system. Couldn't recreate that success. Don't know why. [newbie] Difference in full package Powerpack v. disks only purchase
Hi all, Is there a difference in *disk content* between the six-disk-only for $12.99 (online over web) and the MandrakeStore package for $84.00 other than hard copy manuals? [newbie] Thunderbird flew away??
This post confirms the newbie in me. I downloaded Thunderbird from the Mozilla site to use as my mail client. I configured it, used it, and it worked fine. I tried to right click to save link to desktop as I did with Firefox, but alas, it didn't work, so when I exited the Thunderbird screen it must have flown away because I can't find it. I know you have a simple answer to this so please, please tell me. I am using the graphic environment - at least until I learn more about Mandrakelinux - and probably longer. How do I determine where I stored this program? How do I make it my default mail client? How do I get a Thunderbird icon on my desktop? How do I make Firefox my default browser? And MOST IMPORTANT, are there good reasons why I should NOT use these two programs in place of the usual or standard Mandrake programs that come with the disks?? [newbie] Error retrieving (update) packages
I installed the four CDs for the $12.99 edition of) 10.1 successfully *except* that I could not retrieve the updates during the installation procedure. When I attempt to update through Control Center I get the following error message at the point of starting download of hdlist.cz from medium 'Updates for Mandrakelinux 10.1 )ftplu)'. The error message reads, in its entirety: It's impossible to retrieve the list of new packages from the media 'Updates for Mandrakelinux 10,1 (ftplu)'. Either this update is misconfigured, and in this case you should use the Software Media Manager to remove it and re-add it in order to reconfigure it, either it is currently unreachable and you should retry later. [newbie] Reporting a bug.
Can someone please tell me how, in very simple steps, how to report a bug/issue. I had real problems trying to install mdk10.1 on a Tyan Trinity motherboard and AMD 500 Mhz K6 II CPU. The default kernel in mdk 10.0 and 10.1 and the 2.4 kernels will not load after the install. It gets to the Bios check text message after lilo boot screen then immediately reboots. (Details are on www.mandrakeexpert.com) I got round this problem by recompiling the kernel specifically for the K6 II processor and changing a couple of other things during makemenu config process. This custom buit kernel boots up fine. (Just takes forever to build it on this hardware ;-( ). I have also since found that for mandrake 10.0 and 10.1 the Tyan Trinity 1509S motherboard is listed as a 64 bit piece of hardware. There is as far as I can see no simple way to notify mandrake or these quite serious issues. Andy Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] User IDs start at 500 or 501?
I just installed 9.1 on a new system and ran into a difference between how the installer creates new users and how drakconf does. I created a couple of users during the install and they ended up with uid = 501 and 502. As they always have on previous versions of Mandrake. Then when the system was up I created several more, very carefully creating them in the same order as on our other systems. After I spent all the time getting them created and set up, I discovered that they did not match the uid's on our other systems. It seems that drakconf starts its numbering at 500. So, using letters for the order in which I created them, the users were a=501, b=502, c=500, d=503, e=504, etc. I had to rip out all the users from c up, create a dummy at 500 and redo them. Argghhh. [Fwd: Re: [newbie] nVidia driver fails to initialize at startup]
( On the Nvidia forums, there are long-running threads related to several issues involving newer Nvida graphics cards. Just to list some suggestions: 1. If you are getting to the AGP section in your Xfree86.log file before you get locked up, in other words, the last line is Setting mode then you may have issues with AGP BIOS on your motherboard and Nvidia's card. The solution is to add this line to your XF86Config-4 file Under Section Device Option NvAGP 1 This tells Nvidia card to use internal AGP rather than kernel agpgart and sometimes fixes issues. If your XFree log does not show it locking up but you just go into powersave mode and stay there, add this line, also under Device Option ConnectedMonitor CRT - or DFP or TV depending on where you are connected. Also, Option IgnoreDisplayDevices DFP, TV - if you are using the CRT connection. This option is to avoid issues with the card taking an inordinately long time to detect the active display. I looked in the log file, and it seems to be loading AGP fine. Actually, it seems to be loading everything fine, but the only error I get is the 'nVidia kernel failed to initialize at startup!' And then after that it said 'screens found, but no useful configuration' I downloaded the nv_check.sh script the nvidia site told me to (somewhere in there), and it said the nVidia kernel wasn't being loaded by the linux kernel, and I needed to fix that. Like I say, if yer installing glib from source, yer way ahead of some of the dunderheads around here...wait, did I just say that out loud?! When you install from a source tarball, in my experience you want to do it a bit differently for critical libraries like glib and such, because Mandrake tends to put them in non-standard locations (I think *good* ones, but that's another flame war). Instead of just ./configure, do ./configure --prefix=/usr (this is for glib). To execute ldconfig (and updatedb, just to be sure), su to root in your fav terminal and simply run the commands. su root enter password for root updatedb (go get a coffee) ldconfig then try installing Pango from the source packages and report back! The main thing to keep in mind is if you keep track of what you are doing, and don't, repeat *don't* delete the source packages once you install, you can always uninstall, go back, and start over. Ya, it's not like installng Kazaa on Windows, I'll give ya that. Awesome. It seems that worked out well; Pango found glib and continued to install whatever it needed to do. I used the prefix when I was configuring Pango, also if this is needed? And what do updatedb and ldconfig actually do? See, usually when I run ./configure and make and all of those commands, it'd show me where everything is being put, right? Well, if this was the case of say a lib (glib) and I tried to install another package that depended on that lib, it'd fail to install because I wouldn't know where to point the installation at/where the library was actually installed. Should I always point the libs at -prefix=/usr? Or should this be the only case for small applications and so? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

But I don't know how to fix this. Ah, yes, I am sorry, I got Glibc mixed with Glib...my bad. Did you install glib from source? If so, you may need to install to a Mandrake specific location. Also, make sure you have the glib install in your library path by running ldconfig (eh, Stephen?!). [newbie] Recombining backup files fails
This is not exactly a Mandrake question, but since that is what I'm running, I thought I would ask here. [Mandrake 8.1, by the way.] I am making backup files (using a script that calls afio) and then putting them on CD-R disks. Since some of the backup files are greater than 640MB, I have to split the big file into pieces. I have used both dd and split to do this, apparently successfully. But now when I cat those partial files back into one big one, they seem to have errors according to 'cmp'. For example, using split, I end up with files backupaa and backupab. Do a 'cat backupaa backupab backuptest' and compare the original backup with backuptest and get backup backuptest differ: char 351289345, line 1341543 If I try the backuptest file with 'afio -T backuptest backtest.txt' I get errors, though not at the same place as cmp found. Screen blanks for about 90 seconds and I get several rows of penguins and say yes, that's OK [Is it? Should there be several rows?] I go back to my user account and run 'startx', the screen blanks for about 90 seconds and the desktop wizard comes up. I choose xfce and come up in that window manager. [Another problem: I can't save any xfce configuration changes. [newbie] No really! - I lost control of network interfaces
I seem to have done something to my Mandrake 8.2 installation on a Dell Latitude to lose control of my network interfaces. When I use netconf to check and configure the machine, it shows a total of 6 different network interface options. All I want is to use the first to set the proper IP address, name, and DNS servers for eth0. Netconf shows the first one configured as I would like, but disabled. It shows the second one enabled, again for eth0, but using the IP address of the router for this network, 10.32.10.1. The third for eth0 is enabled and configured as the first one, that is the way I want it. The rest are empty. I have reset them the way I want, eliminated any info on the second and third options, disabled them, enabled the first and saved. No matter what I do, they get reset as above. I have webmin on this machine and looking at the network settings, it seems to be OK. Mandrake Control Center also seems to show it set up as I want. I've looked through any .conf files I can think of that might be relevant and I cannot for the life of me figure out what is changing the settings. Can someone point me toward a solution? Looks like the VT82C686 so modules.conf should look something like this, I'd open up you case and have a look at the Southbridge to get the exact revision... as there are 2 versions a and B rule of thumb if I remember correctly is that a only supports ATA66 and B supports ATA100 (not sure if that helps much). alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via686a (for 686B, 8231) alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss This will setup OSS emulation so all you need to do is launch xine, open Tools/Audio and change null to oss and press enter. Re: [newbie] Identifying sound server for Xine
What Southbridge does the Epox EP-6VBA have? Could be one of following VT8231, VT82C686A, VT82C686B, VT8233, VT8233A, VT8233C, VT8235 All but the VT8235 are currently supported, although the VT8233A requires a new driver to get it working. Xine can use OSS, ALSA, ESD and ARTSD but I have only used it with OSS (ALSA emulation). Check /etc/modules.conf for lines like; alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via (X being the southbridge you have) alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss This provides the ALSA modules with oss emulation (or should do :) Try: cat /proc/pci To get an idea or what hardware is installed. [newbie] CDROM problem in GNOME, OK in KDE and console
Hi, I've been trying to work out a CDROM issue I have in Mandrake 8.1 but I'm stuck :( CDROM or DVDROM or CDRW all work fine at the console and in KDE...but When I launch GNOME I can mount the drive and view all the files on the CD, however when I try to copy any file from the CD to the Hard drive it shows a blank file with 0 bytes (but gives the file name). I'm logged in as Root and have full permission to the desktop or other directories I've tried to copy files to. I'm currently using a Compaq DVD-ROM DVD-114 (well tested in Win98 2k and XP, and works fine at console and KDE) Things I have checked and tried; dmseg reports the correct drive model Also reports - hdc: ATAPI DVD ROM drive, 512kb Cache, UDMA (33) lilo.conf - append= devfs=mount quiet fstab - /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user, noauto,ro Default was - /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto user, iocharset=iso8859-1, umask, sync, exec, codepage=850, noauto 0 0 cat /proc/devices - Block devices 1 ramdisk 2 fd 3 ide0 9 md 22 ide1 cat /proc/filesystems - does not list iso9660 from boot. If I mount the drive iso9660 is then listed. I've not added or removed any programs or services from the standard install. My guess is that there must be some sort of config file for GNOME stopping it working, but I haven't a clue what or were. Re: [newbie] CDROM problem in GNOME, OK in KDE and console
Sorry forgot to mention the type of CD's Tried several CD's including CD-R and CD-RW formatted to ISO 9960 with Joliet (using Nero). Tried original CD's from various sources. Even tested the Mandrake ISO images I burnt for Mandrake 8.1 and 8.2. I know Linux use to have a problem with Joliet but this was sorted quite a few Kernels back + it wouldn't work in KDE if that was the problem. And I haven't used any of the CD's in packet format, so I'm stumped. thanks, using the tar with the -M switch did the job quite nicely. You do not need to make filesystems on them however, as you will be using them in raw mode. If you are backing up a large set of subdirectories, switch to the base subdirectory and issue the following command: cd directory tar -cv -L 1440 -M -f /dev/fd0 . This command will prompt you when to change floppies. Wait for the floppy drive light to go out of course! If you need to backup or transfer multiple files or directories, or just a single large file, then specify them instead of the period at the end of the tar command above. Unpacking the archive is similar to the above command: cd directory tar -xv -L 1440 -M -f /dev/fd0 == It might be five years old, but I'll bet it's still true. The following command will save everything unilaterally and keep all ownership and permissions information verbatim: cd /home tar -zxpvf /tmp/storage/home_dir.tar.gz * If you then want to view what you've done after you complete this, you go to the /tmp/storage directory and type: tar -ztpvf home_dir.tar.gz This doesn't do anything but pull a list of what's in the archive. [newbie] autologin does run .bash_profile
Strange problem with logging in. Until yesterday I was letting the system come up in console mode, logging in as 'andyd' and then running 'startx' to get into X-Windows. Yesterday I chose the option of being logged in automatically as andyd and in KDE. When I do that, it appears that it is not a login session. At least .bash_profile does not get run. If I switch back to doing logging in manually, .bash_profile does get run. Shouldn't autologin run .bash_profile as the login shell script? The current workaround, of course, is to log in at a console first, then run 'startx'. But does anybody have any idea how I could make autologin do what I think it should?
