Thanx Greg,,

I can't see their reasoning on not allowing blank reply-to's, for mail
lists like sympa too work properly. I suppose I can use Gmail for one

If you'd like a Gmail Account I have 3 invations left.

A note on grounding. Most times when I see instructions for this it
says something like, Unplug your computer.

DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER. If you do, you will remove the machine
from the system ground and your box will be floating. Any time
equipment is floating, there is a chance that it's potential will be
different from ground potential. Turn it off, but leave it plugged
in and the case will be bonded. If you are not on a workbench with a
known good bond to ground, attach yourself to the metal part of the
case, and you are good to go.

I think Which was told off and had to publish a retraction not so long
ago for publicly giving that bit of advice.

Some things to bear in mind:
 1. If there's an earth fault the live wire is connected to you.
 2. The switch is in the live wire. If, like I did, you have an extension
cable with the live and neutral swapped, then the live parts are still
live. It may still be a problem with a properly wired connection if
your neutral is at a different potential to your earth. OK, not such a
problem with a PC because the PSU is enclosed.
 3. Anti-static straps have 1MegOhm resistors in them. Without such they
are considered serious health and safety violations. Since every piece
of anti-static equipment has that, the actual resistance to earth of
professional gear is usually several meg ohms.

Personally, If I have my wrist strap with me I leave the box plugged in
and use it. If I don't then I still leave it plugged in, but just touch
the case frequently to keep myself at the same potential. I think very
long and hard before I decide to connect myself to the case with a
 piece of wire.

Another word of warning: some PSUs do not have an off switch. The button
on the front of an ATX case leaves power to some parts of the
motherboard. If there isn't a rocker switch on the PSU, you can not
leave it plugged in without having an external switch somewhere.

The best external switch, for boxes without an external (rear) switch,
is using a good quality powerbar that has a switch - not just a
fuse

yikes cross wiring is one thing, but stay away from carpets
altogether. Of all things to happen a number of years ago (1994 or 95
I think) was I killed a keyboard as I stepped away from my grounded
box, walked across the carpeted room, picked up the keyboard (zap) and
I couldn't get the box to boot. Puzzled for several days, I had to
bring it in to a shop, twice for them to tell me the box was perfect.
Lo and behold I wasn't bringing in the peripherals. I stuck in a
floppy and OS2-warp disk, powered up, only for the install program to
tell me I had keyboard errors - buffer overflow.

I didn't even know I zapped the KB but walking about 16 feet on
hair-raising carpet must have overloaded it, and yet I was so careful
with installing the new drive.

[newbie] kde 3.1 installation and config

2003-02-27 Thread sean jacobs
i was wondering if perhaps someone could let me know where the config files
for the kde start menu are at...i just compiled and installed 3.1 last
night but can't figure out how exactly to add all the applications that were
in my old kde menu to my new one. it would be much easier if i could just
cut/paste some lines from one config file to another rather than using the
menu editor application to add everything i need. plus i've already
overwritten most of the old kde binaries so i'm not sure exactly what/where
everything is that used to be in the menu. i've tried going through ~/.kde
and even copied that directory from another user account who hadn't used kde
3.1 yet to my own in hopes that it would provide the same menu configuration
but i was wrong.

also i can't seem to figure out how to make the new kdm boot kde 3.1.i was
not able to add fluxbox to kdmrc for 3.0 because it would get overwritten
after every reboot and when it would not boot kde 3.1 for some reason, i
started using the kdm for 3.1. now it will boot fluxbox but kde 3.1 just
makes the screen flicker a few times but goes back to the kdm login,
eventhough i can boot kde 3.1 with a startx from console. if anyone can
offer some insight on either of these matters it would definately be
appreciated, thanks

[newbie] kde help

2003-02-26 Thread sean jacobs
a few days ago i was having trouble adding fluxbox to my window manager list
in kdm. i decided to go ahead and upgrade to kde 3.1. now fluxbox is added
to my list but there are too additional problems. for some reason i cannot
get the new kdm to boot kde, but kde works fine when i run startx from from
console. also i need to figure out how to add all of the applications from
kde 3.0 menu to 3.1's.

i'm hoping to find a better way than adding everything with the kde menu
editor tool individually because it would be much simpler to just cut and
paste from one file to another and because i don't want to search for the
paths for everything.

thanks in advance for any help

[newbie] printing and kdmrc

2003-02-24 Thread sean jacobs
I have been having a couple of problems with kdm and printing i was hoping
someone could help me out with.

first off..whenever i reboot linux, i have to readd the printer every time.
i have yet to figure out why. my printer is detected properly and prints the
test page during mandrake installation and after i reinstall the printer
with printtool, but every time i reboot, i have to remove and readd the
printer with printtool. i have an hp officejet 570, using the driver
reccomended by printtool.

Secondly, i have been trying to add a window manager (fluxbox) to the kdm
login menu. everything works fine until i reboot and my modified kdmrc is
apparently overwritten. until i reboot, everything is fine and it's on the
menu, but once i reboot, the changes to kdmrc are gone. after modifying it
again and restarting kdm its fine again so i'm pretty sure that's that only
problem. i have sifted through /etc/rc.d/* with regrep and haven't found the
problem yet. i followed a few leads from there to a few other files but
still haven't found a script that overwrites kdmrc. can someone offer me
some insight on this problem?

thanks in advance

Use the FDISK program on a boot floppy from M$hit and delete your NTFS
partition. Now if you want to really feel like a geek, boot off the
winX(tra)P(ain) CD use its partitioning tool to delete the NTFS
(Needlessly Trashing File System), then boot the MDK CD. Use its
partitioning tool to make your partitions. Install pray :)

Should you fail to delete your partitions successfully re-reply to the
list I'm sure Stephen will help you (he's the most prolific poster
today so I'm picking on him).

Here is what you do. Open your email properties and set your smtp server
to the same one that your neighbor has. Leave your pop server the same
and you'll be golden. I had the same problem at work. But that will
do it. Unless of course your neighbors isp's smtp server requires
authentication. So basically every thing stays the same exept the smtp

I guess the question I have is _why_? If the account is in your
neighbor's
name, you can get him to add a user (I have cable here in Florida and we
get
up to 6 users, I think.) I don't even use the username that was given

I
retrieve my mail from that one.

Subject: [newbie] Install - video and GUI problems [adr]

I am new to Linux, but did do a wee bit of UNIX on Sun in the second
half of last century!

I have just installed Mandrake 9.0 on my system, which went well,
mostly.
When it came to configuring the display driver, it offered me set of
screen and colour resolutions - it would not accept any of the
configurations I tried, even very low resolutions! Windows tells me my
display card is a S3 ViRGE-DX/GX PCI (375/385).  The only way I could
continue the install was by cancelling that option.

When Linux booted, no GUI appeared. I could log in at a console prompt,
but had no idea what to do next.

How do I fix this problem? It seems from reading the newsgroups that I
need to edit a file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, but what tools do I use for
editing? How do I get a GUI running from here?

Any help much appreciated.

Re: [newbie] Installation Hangs

2002-08-04 Thread Sean Goh

how big is the partition? what partitions do you have? are we talking about a
4 gig or a 200 meg partition? "/" or "/root" what do you mean by "hangs" and
how did you determine that it was a "hang" and not running the format and
checking for disk errors (it might take a few minutes to format and error
check a 6 gig partition) and did you create the partition with what software
and what settings?

my harddisk is 4.3GB and it has the root partition "/" for 3 GB and the swap
for 100MB. The rest is with another partition "/home". So when it formats
all the partitions, it does fine with "/home" and "/swap" but stops at "/"
meaning you can see "Formatting partition hda1" and nothing changes. I've
tried leaving it that way for 2 hours, nothing happened. I could access the
Alt-F1, Alt-F2, Alt-F3 and Alt-F4. So to restart the comp, i CTL-ALT-DEL.
BTW, i'm using text install since i think my graphics card doesn't support
the graphical installation. Also, i didn't use any partitioning software,
just the M8.2 CD.
I'm with 128MB RAM and 200MHZ processor.

hda6 (1.5GB,Linux native)__

I left both blank coz i don't know what is mount points and clicked OK.
It then says:

Oops, no root partition.

I said "fine", i'll just add something,

hda6 (1.5GB,Linux native)test2

After clicking Ok, i get the same error message.

[newbie] PCTEL HSP56K MicroModem

Yes, unfortunately, I've fallen into the bane of Linux users
everywhere - *shrudder* WinModem.

The good news is, a driver has been made for my type. [ ]

The bad news is, it is a little difficult to install. If anyone would like
to give me a hand in doing this (basically hand-holding me from
start to finish) I would really appreciate it. I already tried it once,
and I messed up my settings and am going to re-install Mandrake

By the way, what is the best/a really good way to partition your
hard drive so that it is easy to re-install/upgrade Linuces?

[newbie] A Classic Newbian Problem

2002-04-27 Thread Sean Robinson

Okay, I have this associate that I introduced to Linux who has a
switchbox set up between two terminals to change his keyboard,
mouse and monitor over to whichever system he is using. He has
a USB mouse hooked up with a converter as a PS/2 mouse.

Because if X windows is running the mouse will stop responding if
he switches over to the other terminal, he wanted me to see if
having it set as a USB mouse would prevent this.

I went and set Mandrake Control Center's mouse options to say
that the mouse was a USB, and it stopped responding. My
question is, How do I return the settings to PS/2 using the
keyboard in Control Center and/or another method?

[newbie] XFRee86 3.3.6 + Laptop

2001-05-25 Thread sean gibbins

I now appear to have a functional X windows running on my laptop, with one
small problem: I appear to have acquired a virtual rather than actual
desktop. By this I mean I can see approximately one quarter of the desktop,
and can navigate to the remaining three quarters using the mouse to move the
aperture with which I view the desktop.

I can see no virtual desktop specified in the XF86Config file, and was
wondering if anyone can suggest how I can get back to a 1024x768 desktop that
is viewable all over?

Cheers,

If you're trying to install video card drivers or whatever, this is a little
less scarey for the average newbie, although knowing your way around
/etc/inittab is desirable in the long run of course.

Go logout - shutdown - console mode

'startx' gets you back into x, and from the console 'poweroff' shuts your
machine down, if you're setup to boot into x.

When you next boot, everything should be back to as it was before, unless
you've completely stuffed it up in the meantime, of course! ;o)

[newbie] Mandrake 8.0, XF86Config and SiS 630

2001-05-19 Thread sean gibbins

Hi All.

Having installed Mandrake 8.0 on my Pico Graduate laptop (opting for XFree86
3.3.6 + experimental acceleration), I find that only the top left portion of
my desktop - approx. 1/6th or 1/8th - is viewable/navigable. I am hoping that
it is a simple XF86Config issue, but knowing what a complete pile of dung the
first lot of SiS 630 drivers were, I suspect something more complicated.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Sean

PS I have tried the install without experimental hardware acceleration, to
similar effect.

 Hi Sean

Change the default setting to "windows" minus the quotes of course giving
 you a line that reads:
 default =windows

That what i have been attempting to do using the emacs editor, but every
time I run /sbin/lilo to get lilo to accept the edited changes I get the
cylinder error message I spoke of.

as for the cylinder error. I had a similar error when I disabled
 lba during
installation. I take it windows on your system has something like the 1st
8gig of the HD? If so, look for where you are asked about lba
 suuport during
installation. I can't recall exactly where it was now, but I suspect that
 may solve the prob.

Windows ME actually takes up the first 4 gb of my HD and Mandrake the
remaining 4GB, am I going to have to reinstall again?

'Bout all I can do is make some vague suggestions from memory.
I had the same situation sometime ago when I installed 7.0. My C:

** easiest way to do this for W9x is edit MSDOS.SYS and change

 what

Charles,

For the D drive, I never created it. It came from the manufacturer with
two partitions already on it. But D is FAT32. ANd yes, I was able to
access the D windows partition before i installed Linux.

This begs 2 questions.
When you created D did you create it as Fat?
Have you ever been able to access D from Windows?

I was able to get PM. When I ran it though, i couyld see two files.
There was a FAt which was labled as my C drive in windows. Then there was
the remainding of my hard drive all in one clump. And rather that saying
what type of drive it was, (whether FAT32 or Linux) it called it "type

i tired to do was in windows, the clump called type 85 (which is where the

[newbie] kppp times out waiting for pppd

2000-06-07 Thread Sean Palmer

I am having trouble getting connected to my ISP via Linux (Mandrake
7.0). Here is what is happening:
My modem is set up (drivers installed) and appears to work fine. When
using kppp, the modem picks up, dials, goes through the handshake with the
other computer, and connects giving the speed. kppp then says it is logging
onto the network, but times out waiting for pppd to come up. I have checked
my DNS and server info, I have let kppp set these, and have set them
manually in my resolv.conf. I have also checked my PAP-secrets file
(CHAP-secrets too) and all are fine. My /etc/ppp/options file is is empty
as it should be for kppp. Nothing seems to help. I have tried connecting
manually through the
terminal in kppp and also through minicom. Both will connect, and I can
give my logon and password, I am then assigned IP address, but can't get any
further.
I have now tried the ppp setup from the mandrakeuser site
(http://www.mandrakeuser.org/connect/cppp.html) that uses pppd and chat
scripts. They don't work either. I still dial in, handshake, connect, then
die. My /var/log/messages and it says that I
everything is fine (shows dial, connect, etc) until it says "alarm" then
"disconnect"
I have searched the web, and though it seems that other have had
similar problems, I can't find an answer. I also searched the old postes to
this list and found a letter describing this exact problem, but the only
answer given didn't seem right.
(http://www.mail-archive.com/newbie@linux-mandrake.com/msg27367.html) It
just said that the ISP was slow and to try to get a new number. I know that
the ISP works fine because I had this whole thing set up right before (with
help from others at an install party, but I can't get ahold of those people
any more), but I had to re-install (long story).
I would like to use kppp (I know it can work, it used to), but at this
point, anything that works will be fine!
 Thanks in advance!

I suspect the problem is your ISP or a bad telephone
line. There could a lot of
frames being lost and retried (by your modem if
 error correction enabled) which
would account for some of the pauses.

You may have to play with the PPP settings. You
 could try reducing the maximum
PPP frame lengths as this will improve the success
 rate of the frames going
 through without error.

Trying pinging the dns server of you ISP and see if
 it is reliable and quick.

[newbie] modem problem

2000-04-26 Thread Sean Oonamey

Hey ppl,

When I booted into Mandrake lastnight for some reason
my modem started dialling. I have no idea where it was
going to or why this was happening. It would then hang
up and then start redialling.
I noticed that when it booted up it was starting the
interface lo. What is this? I have a feeling that this
is the problem. It used to be interface eth0,although
my connection was poor, lots of stalls. How do I
change it back? Has anyone seen this problem?

[newbie] USB mouse support

2000-03-08 Thread Sean Conroy

I've just installed Mandrake 7.0 (air) release and had to
convert to
using my PS/2 mouse. I want to use a USB
mouse.

I run into an INSMOD error at the beginning of the GUI install

selecting the mouse type of USB. My Win2k Advance
Server
on another partition on the same machine
works with with this same mouse so I know
the USB port is usable/functional.

The USB device is a Microsoft USB Intellimouse v
1.1A.

It gives an INSMOD error selecting any of the USB
selections
and the mouse does not work. I think this is the module failing to load.

SU or login as root user then
try using the 'sndconfig' program.

This is RedHat handy dandy tool. You want to
run it our of your Xdisplay at console level.

I can call this the dumbest question ever because it is and it's mine.

What command do you use to logoff and shutdown the system? I have it set
to
load X at startup and I can choose logoff, but that just puts me at the X
login screen again. I have just been hitting the reset button to reboot,
but
Linux yells at me the next time I boot it up.

Thanks.. this is really the least of my concerns/questions at the moment,
but I'll save the other ones for later when I've learned a bit more.

[newbie] Q's concerning Kppp and Lilo

2000-02-18 Thread Sean Geoghegan

Hi I'm new to the list and to Mandrake 7.0 and I've
got a couple questions that have been discussed recently but I've come in on the
tail end of the conversations so if someone can fill me in it would much
appreciated.

1 I can connect to my ISP using Kppp and I
can ping th remote server and other servers how ever i can't browse or receive
mail using any program. I read in the help files that a DNS IP address
needs to be specified. So I put in the remote server IP address and then
netscape would attempt to connect but come back with the error message that the
address is invalid or something like that. Am I correct in assuming that I
need to put in the IP address of a real DNS and then it should work? Does
any one have an IP address I could use or should I get one of my
ISP?

2 I had to re-install W98 after Linux which
removed Lilo from my system. How do I put this back on with out
re-installing Linux? Also I am having the half memory detected
problem. I can fix this at the Lilo prompt with "linux mem=128" but how do
I set it up so Lilo will do this automatically?

3 How does Peer to Peer networking work with
Linux? I have it connected to a Windows box. What is the Linux
equivilant of Network Neighbourhood?

Thanks

as a hard drive /dev/hdd on mine. (two hard drives are a and b, the CD

the LS-120 a bootable hard drive to Linux. Hoping that will work.

Try "tar -xvf foo.tar" where foo is the name of the

Re: [newbie] Openint tar files

I must point out that a .tar.gz file is "gunzipped"
and the "z" option must be included in the command,
hence tar -xvzf foo.tar
If the file has already been un commpessed then the
correct syntax is
tar -xvf foo.tar.

The command line to decompress a tar.gz file is :
 tar zxf file.tar.gz

If you already unzipped the archive, then you just
 have to type :
 tar xf file.tar

 It should work with that.

/etc/hosts this solved the problem for me if not
then I am out of ideas.

 Good Luck

That is set in /etc/resolv.conf and rechecked
/etc/hosts. The Internal network uses the same DNS
nameservers as the linux box and the defualt
 gateway
for the Internal boxes is IP of eth1 which is
192.168.1.1, the internal network is 192.168.1.x,
 so I
don't know why DNS is not working.

Hi all, IP Masq is configured and working.
 (KINDA)
   The computers on
the internal network can ping IP addresses but
 not
   URL's, The Linux
box is set as the gateway for the rest of the
   network and can ping
both ways, so I am thinking that I am missing
   reverse DNS from the
linux box into the internal network, or
 somehow
   that the Linux box is
not converting the nameserver information for
 the
   internal network.
Any ideas? I could really use the help,.

I feel for you. 56K is a drag, I D/L'd it in less than
an hour and forty five minutes, not to rub it in. ;)

 Javier,

I suggest downloading a better download manager.
 Don't be offended, but
 I'm
not a fan of Getright. I suggest downloading
 Go!Zilla. It does a
 wonderful
 job...and it is totally free.

 Just my $.02,
 Matt

 HI again:

 I´d tried both ftp servers:

 ftp.sunet.se/pub ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub

 and

 ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/..
 ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/.. .

but neither support resuming, so if I stop download
 I loose all the
 file.

Could you send me another servers that supports
 resuming.

 I´m using getright 4.1.1

 Thanks.
