I can't see their reasoning on not allowing blank reply-to's, for mail
lists like sympa too work properly. I suppose I can use Gmail for one

If you'd like a Gmail Account I have 3 invations left.

A note on grounding. Most times when I see instructions for this it
says something like, Unplug your computer.

DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER. If you do, you will remove the machine
from the system ground and your box will be floating. Any time
equipment is floating, there is a chance that it's potential will be
different from ground potential. Turn it off, but leave it plugged
in and the case will be bonded. If you are not on a workbench with a
known good bond to ground, attach yourself to the metal part of the
case, and you are good to go.

I think Which was told off and had to publish a retraction not so long
ago for publicly giving that bit of advice.

Some things to bear in mind:
 1. If there's an earth fault the live wire is connected to you.
 2. The switch is in the live wire. If, like I did, you have an extension
cable with the live and neutral swapped, then the live parts are still
live. It may still be a problem with a properly wired connection if
your neutral is at a different potential to your earth. OK, not such a
problem with a PC because the PSU is enclosed.
 3. Anti-static straps have 1MegOhm resistors in them. Without such they
are considered serious health and safety violations. Since every piece
of anti-static equipment has that, the actual resistance to earth of
professional gear is usually several meg ohms.

Personally, If I have my wrist strap with me I leave the box plugged in
and use it. If I don't then I still leave it plugged in, but just touch
the case frequently to keep myself at the same potential. I think very
long and hard before I decide to connect myself to the case with a
 piece of wire.

Another word of warning: some PSUs do not have an off switch. The button
on the front of an ATX case leaves power to some parts of the
motherboard. If there isn't a rocker switch on the PSU, you can not
leave it plugged in without having an external switch somewhere.

The best external switch, for boxes without an external (rear) switch,
is using a good quality powerbar that has a switch - not just a
fuse

yikes cross wiring is one thing, but stay away from carpets
altogether. Of all things to happen a number of years ago (1994 or 95
I think) was I killed a keyboard as I stepped away from my grounded
box, walked across the carpeted room, picked up the keyboard (zap) and
I couldn't get the box to boot. Puzzled for several days, I had to
bring it in to a shop, twice for them to tell me the box was perfect.
Lo and behold I wasn't bringing in the peripherals. I stuck in a
floppy and OS2-warp disk, powered up, only for the install program to
tell me I had keyboard errors - buffer overflow.

I didn't even know I zapped the KB but walking about 16 feet on
hair-raising carpet must have overloaded it, and yet I was so careful
with installing the new drive.

[newbie] VIA Apollo Pro 7.2

2000-11-13 Thread Sean Pritchard

What happened to the VIA Chipset and 7.2?

I have 7.1 Running on my SOYO 6VBA133 M/B with the VIA Apollo Pro
Chipset. Yet while attempting a fresh install of 7.2 or an upgrade
through FTP install, I can't get past the hard drive partition setup
portion of the install. Using the expert mode on one occasion I was at
least able to read the notes on why it wouldn't install.

The installer did not recognize any VIA Chipset, Bridges, Controllers
etc. at all, it's option was to ingore them. WHY? Yet it did
recognize my VIA Rhine NIC for the install.

1999-09-28 Thread Sean Pritchard

Download the *.tar file

I couldn't get "un"tar in KDE for some reason.

In Gnome at file browser find *.tar file, double click

find "so51inst" folder in the directory you found the *.tar

find the "documentation" folder, it has a *.pdf file in it

double click on the PDF file from file browser

open a terminal

follow the installation directions step-by-step

works without a hitch...

The PDF file is in plain English and has screenshots. I did a Network
install with 2 separate users as well and I found no complications
except one.

After install is complete. Reboot.. Use KAppFinder... it will justify
your menu for you. I had to drag and drop an Icon and link to the
executable file name. The installation doesn't do this for you. But for
some reason StarOffice is a bit confused between Gnome/KDE
installations. I found StarOffice in the Gnome section of the main
menu. Or you can drag and drop an icon from the file browser found in
/?/Office51/bin/ /?/being the directory of your user home.

FTP install working just fine - 25% Complete after 40 minutes.

Here's a tip:

1. Select an FTP site that has the distro only. Too many people
fighting for connections to download the iso.

2. Pick a ftp site located in a highly populated area of the world
where most people would be sleeping.

3. Be patient and wait one more week for the server traffic to slow

Re: [newbie] Internet Explorer

1999-09-20 Thread Sean Pritchard

Wait a minute Fellow Newbies!

I thought that one reason we started converting to Linux was to break
away from MS systems and Apps?

If we start putting in requests for MS Apps, MS will bungle up the
beauty of this OS and it's community. I am not a purist, but in look at
it this way. If I own a Dodge Ram, I don't want Ford redesigning and
building accessories for my truck, nor do I want them to do any
maintenance on it.

But, third party mechanics can take a look, and do service on it if
they are qualified and respect my property. They'll have warrantee
liscensing to be qualified, to ensure the customer satisfaction and
protection.

MS was to OS's and computers as Henry Ford was to cars. Big Bad Bill
setup the mass production and implementation but Ford does not have the
most dependable vehicles, nor were they the inventors - BENZ has a
product that is fast and decades durable and dependable and the
engineering is out reach for Ford to impliment in there vehicles.

There were hybrid vehicle corporations out there that died -
AMC=Ford+GMC, they couldn't even take the best of both to do it. So
CHRYSLER had a mind to buy it up and revamp it. They had the brains for
marketing and technology to do it.

DOes Linux have the edge to do something like this to MS?, we'll only
see in the decade ahead.

Sorry for the deep philosophy...

Sean

Re: [newbie] HD-Install vs. FTP-Install?

1999-09-17 Thread Sean Pritchard

Thanx Steve,

I have a feeling an FTP, might work because of the type of NIC that I
have. I have a DFE-530TX (D-Link 10/100 pci). It uses the via-rhine
module, yet at installation in MDK 6.0 it (the download process)
wouldn't recognize it as such. In Linuxconf, I simply had to type in
via-rhine as my eth module, though if you read the list provided in
Linuxconf, via-rhine wasn't there.

But if you could tell me if D-Link drivers are there in the
Bootnet.img, it could work for me I guess.

I am downloading EVERYTHING right now, in the RPMS I am alphabetically
in the list at "i", after only 2 hours. But I downloaded the other
folders under Mandrake/ before getting the RPMS.

One question though, I do need a separate partition to put "Mandrake/"
and it's contents into correct/ and then boot with the floppy?

Sean

I have copied both the Boot.img and Bootnet.img to floppies and I am
ready to toss a coin on how to install 6.1. [I should go out and buy a
CD-r though, a little more costly, but probably the easiest method vs.
  buying the boxed version]

Since cable is an always-on technology (as opposed to PPP which requires
outside assistance to bring up), you should be able to do an FTP
 install.

The benefit of doing that is that you can download only what you
actually install. The downside is that you'll have to download
piecemeal if you decide to install new packages.

The HD download is great if you've got an extra partition that you can
leave packages in for the duration. Beyond that, I suppose the only
benefit to an HD install is that you can do it with just a floppy.

I'd give the FTP install a try... though it might be a bit slow since
 it's release day and all...

somewhere in the tree for download of 6.1. Mandrake has posted the SUSE
Xserver for that ATI 128. Sorry I don't have any more, maybe someone
else can re-direct you. BUT I did see it on one mirror (Linuxberg i
think).

OK STEVE:

I now have all the files for 6.1 (Did I need to download the whole

/Mandrake/
 /RMPS/
 /base/
 /instimage/
   /lib/
   /modules/
   /usr/
   /bin/

??

Do I now just stick in the floppy with the Boot.img on it and Reboot?
At which point will I have tell the Install program where the Mandrake/
directory is [I have a feeling it is all self explanatory from here as a
regular install.

Will I be selecting "Install" / "Upgrade, as in the regular CD
installation?

module, yet at installation in MDK 6.0 it (the download process)
wouldn't recognize it as such. In Linuxconf, I simply had to type in
via-rhine as my eth module, though if you read the list provided in
  Linuxconf, via-rhine wasn't there.

But if you could tell me if D-Link drivers are there in the

Not a clue, it'll probably be a month or two before I move to 6.1.

I am downloading EVERYTHING right now, in the RPMS I am alphabetically
in the list at "i", after only 2 hours. But I downloaded the other

One question though, I do need a separate partition to put "Mandrake/"

No, no need for a separate partition.

Re: [newbie] Rogers@home

1999-09-15 Thread Sean Pritchard

Hi Daniel,

Well here goes... I am not on Rogers@home, but our little cable company
here in Vanderhoof, BC (pop.5800) is independant from the big networks.
But we do use the LanCity Cable Modems.

I'll be brief as possible and write this in point form from the GNOME
Desktop.

Control Panel_Linuxconf_Networking_Basic host information

-- change your machine's host name at this point to be the same as your
Windows computer name, so that you're recognized an no confilts arrise.

-- select the related adapter tab to your NIC

-- make sure the "enabled" option is selected

-- make sure the "dhcp" button is selected

-- Accept

Control Panel_Linuxconf_Networking_Name server specification (DNS)

-- make sure "DNS is required for normal operation" is selected

-- in the "nameserver 1" field, type in your @home network server
address, and any additional optional servers they gave you

-- Accept

from Host Name Serach Path

-- enable "Multiple IP's for one host

-- select "hosts, dns" from the list

-- Accept

-- Quit, Activate

from the Control Panel, click on the Network Icon

-- under the "Names" tab hostname=the anme of your machine

-- "Domain" must be written as Roger's has provided you

-- "Name Servers" should be the same as the servers you edited in
Linuxconf, if not then edit here and add the correct ones

-- under the "Interfaces" tab make sure your "eth" shows "dhcp" and that
it is "active"

If Rogers' uses a Default Gateway of static origin, as well as static
IP's (although I tink they use DHCP) you can hardwire your NIC to @home
under the "Routing" tab by simply filling in the blanks.

Best Regards,

(note I was slapped on the wrist once for using HTML mail, gobbles
bandwidth on the list server)

Hi Simon,

DO you have an available (Man I hate asking this question) Windows95/98
machine? If so goto (again I don't like saying this, somebody slap me
upside the head ... :o)

http://www.winfiles.com

or some other shareware/freeware site and do a search for "SiSoft Sandra".
It is a utilities app that does benchmarking etc., yet it also probes all
hardware devices and their chipsets and then displays a report. It even
gives names of chipsets, revision dates, manufacture dates etc. It's a bit
more like Sherlock Homes, than a piece of software.

If this file is no longer available and you have an ICQ number I can direct
transfer you the zipped file. This version is a limited trial version yet
it still does the job.

Email me directly if you need a download from me.

Thanks for the pointer, I'll take a look.

Basically, the cards I'm using are listed as NE2000 compatible, in fact
that's what the Preceding Windows install was using. Unfortunately, that's
all I've got to go on. The cards are completely unmarked, not
 even a serial
number. The software that came on the associated hard drive didn't make a
dent, and basically I was short of basically every bit of info I
 could have
had!! I got one in a 95 machine, and just about managed to
 identify the IRQ
and memory IO (Did anyone know how many combinations there are,
 and how many
reboots it takes to test each one??!!!), but attempting to transfer that
into Linux got me falling at the first hurdle.

It's interesting that someone has mentioned that Netgear card, as that is
the card I'm using in my main 95 PC, and I agree, that doesn't
 configure in
Linux either!!! I'll have to keep an eye out for the 3com cards, at least
then I might get my network working!!! I've just checked my favourite
supplier, and saw them for 42 UK pounds, a little high for a hobby!! The
DE-220 might be more suited, only 9 UK pounds.

go to a dos machine and turn plug'n'play off and hard set the cards to
 the

I've found this to work with ISA cards, not PCI cards.
I just did a fresh install of RH 6 today and got a new D-Link DFE-530 TX

*really* need to turn off PNP and manually set IRQs, then try an ISA

 disablePNP.

Hi Hyle - don't worry about configuring it during installation.
  Is this an
ISA or PCI version of the D-link 220? IN any case this should
 work fine

I'll use the Gnome Desktop for working on this in Root...

Open "Control Panel" from the Main Menu under "System"

Click on the "LinuxConf" Icon (the conductor withe the blue shirt)...

On the Config page of Linuxconf (the first page revealed) press on
 "Networking"...

From the next window press "Basic host information"... Under "Host name"
this is where one could change the name of their host machine
 from localhost
to something they prefer to call their PC

Select "Adapter 1" page, unless this is your modem configuration select an
 alternative page

Make sure "Enabled" selected, "Dhcp" is selected.

I am not sure of your network setup, or if you might be on cable internet
access like myself, but that shouldn't matter at this point... so
 disregard
Primary Domain-Aliases-IP address (unless you have a fix static
 address you
 need to use), disregard Netmask...

For " Net device" if this is your only NIC Card select "eth0"
 from the list.
Next is the Kernel module selection - if the card is an ISA 16bit
 then select
"NE" from the list or alternatively "NE-2k pci" for a PCI card

Come to think of it I don't recall there being a DE-220 pci, it
 must be ISA,
I had one in my machine 2 weeks ago before upgrading to a
 DFE-530TX pci

Note for anyone using the D-Link 10/100 - DFE-530TX the
 kernel module
to use is not listed in the Linuxconf, and is not recognzable at
 installation
because it uses a different kernel driver - these cards use the
 "via-rhine"
module simply type in "via-rhine" in the Kernel module option, for this
card I/O and IRQ aren't neccessary to input for configuration.

Two last things to do for configuring. input the mem base
 address I/O
port the card is using and the IRQ number.

Hit "Accept", Quit out of Linuxconf - Activate changes as exiting.

Here are some final quick tests to see if it installed.

Open a terminal type " lsmode" that comand will produce a list of
modules running on your system, the most recent should be the "ne" we
 configured.

Second from the same terminal now type "ifconfig" a list of
 two items
should come up "lo" and "eth0"

If they do that's great, if they don't there's one more thing we
 may need to
do, and wouldn't hurt to do any at this point..

from the terminal again type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart" you
should see your "lo" and "eth0" refresh themselves, if they came
 up on this
 command then you're all set.

 Hope I was of help,
