[newbie] Xfce4 user login broken

2005-02-20 Thread Margot
When I try to login to Xfce4 as user, either from the login manager
or by using 'startxfce4' from a terminal, I get a few seconds of the
Xfce 'mouse' (or is it meant to be a rat?) logo flashing, and then I
just get the blue screen with the Mandrake logo. As normal user, I
can log into KDE with no problem - but I'd rather not have to!

Doing 'startxfce4' as root works fine - but of course I'm then
logged in as root!

Because it works as root but not as a normal user, and KDE is not
affected, I assume that it is something in my Xfce user config that
is broken, not Xfce itself.

I'm sure there must be some way to fix this, but I'm not sure where
to start. Everything was fine yesterday, but not working when I
rebooted this morning.

[I blame the cat - attempting sneaky overnight downloads of 'kitty
porn' must have corrupted a file somewhere!]

Just a guess. In the meantime didn't you change the
~/.config/xfce4/initrc file? I just had the same behavior with a wrong
initrc. To test, just rename initrc and launch xfce without it. It must
start without a glitch.

Not sure I gave you the correct path to this file. initrc only exist if
you have created it because you have special programs to launch at
session startup for instance.

[newbie] Xfce4 settings question

2004-12-27 Thread Graham Watkins
This ought to be easy but I can't figure it out.
How do I get the iconbox to launch with xfce4 instead of having to start
it from the command line? Is there anywhere I should put a script for
this and any other program I want launched on startup?

The xfce manual can only be described as cryptic.

Your probably right about there being a script you can edit. I took
a look at startxfce4 and decided I didn't want to mess with it.
I'm using XFCE 4.2rc3 right now - But some of these procedures
may apply.
1. I can't remember if Icon Box was a selectable from the add item
to the panel option accessed by placing the mouse arrow on an

item in the panel and right clicking the mouse button. Just
thought I'd mention that in case you haven't tried it.
2. You can install a launcher onto the panel. This is a little
bit easier than starting it from the commandline. This has
worked for me in RC3. Once I ran iconbox I then quit
XFCE selecting the save session option. Icon box was up
and running when I ran XFCE again. I then removed the
launcher from the panel, quit XFCE again - this time I
deselected the save session option. Icon Box now runs
automatically now each time I run XFCE.
I do hope someone else has some better suggestions. :)

You have a couple of options.

1. Put a script in $HOME/Desktop/Autostart to start iconbox. It would be
   as simple as

   #!/bin/bash
   /path/to/iconbox

The issue with this is that if you decide to switch to another
   desktop environment, iconbox will start.

2. Add a line to /usr/local/etc/xdg/xfce4 (in mine, your location might
be different like /etc/xdg/xfce4). Just take a peek inside that file
and you'll see where different things are started. Just add a line
with iconbox and you should be good to go.

[newbie] XFCE4 looks like KDE...huh?

2004-07-21 Thread Margot
I've been using XFCE4 for a while now after switching from KDE -
much quicker to load, simple layout, does what I want it to
do...until now.

I set a nice simple desktop layout - panel at the bottom, icons
growing up the right hand side, taskbar at the top, a plain purple
background with a small picture of my cat in the middle so I have a
friendly face to look at when all windows are closed - my one
concession to eye candy!

Last night, while I was checking my emails, my desktop changed
itself! I still have the same XFCE4 layout of panel, icons and
taskbar, but my purple cat background disappeared and was replaced
with what looks like KDE! Blue background, stars 10 logo bottom
right, and a sprinkling of icons - the very same icons that I
created on my desktop when I used KDE!

Too tired to deal with it last night, so closed down left it to
the morning. Booted logged in this morning, got a quick flash of
my normal purple cat background, then the KDE lookalike background
appeared again!!!

Right-clicking on the desktop itself, and selecting the Change
Desktop Background option, I get the standard Mandrake choices -
what I'm seeing at the moment. And I tested the icons - they work
(on a double-click).

Using the XFCE4 settings launcher from the panel and choosing
Desktop:backdrop it shows that I have selected the purple
background with the centred picture of my cat - but this is not
being displayed!

What have I broken? How do I fix it?

I had a similar problem when I first started using pekwm. Everytime I
fired up nautilus it also brought up the gnome background. I discovered
that 'nautilus --no-desktop' fixes this problem. I am not sure if
KDE/konquerer has a similar feature but it might be something to look
into.

How are you starting XFce4? My initial thought is that you have some
program running in the background that is changing your background.

Switch on computer, select user 'margot', xfce4 is selected by

at startup from a saved session the day before, but I close
everything else - I've found that xfce4 seems unable to save
sessions if I leave OpenOffice open.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by icons growing up the right hand
side. Are you using some other app to get icons on your desktop? Or,
are you taking about the iconbox? Are you even using xfdesktop?
Yes, the iconbox - mine is set to start at bottom right and grow
upwards, so it normally contains 2 icons at startup - kppp and
konsole - and acquires more during the day.

Anyway, check your startup script and make sure you're not starting chbg
or some such.

Interesting...I looked into ksysguard, found that nautilus was

What is doubly interesting is that nautilus was running at all - I

Since you didn't know where it was we can assume you didn't change
anything in it :)

Check your ~/Desktop/Autostart and see if you have anything in there
that might be starting Nautilus.

Also, IIRC XFce4 would launch Nautilus to display its documentation. So,
if you ever looked at the help for anything in XFce4, that may have been
what launched Nautilus. I may be wrong on that, though. I think now it
just uses the browser environment variable for displaying help, which is
what has me confused, but I haven't set it up from scratch for so long
that I just don't know.

man rxvt and man bash to find a command-line option that does what you
want. Then change the command line that XFCE4 uses to invoke it.

Having said that, I can't see any really good way to do what you want.
The only way I can see is to specify a specific .bashrc file for bash.

 rxvt -e /bin/bash --rcfile myrcfile

 Where myrcfile contains:
source ~/.bashrc
cd mydirectory

 Note: I haven't tested this.

This ended up being a simple script error.
I changed to the seti directory to start seti and then run xsessions.
In KDE, this didn't seem to affect anything,
In XFCE4, it left everything starting in the seti directory.
THanks for the help.

Can someone please tell me where to find my wastebasket in xfce4?

[newbie] Xfce4-- running apps vanish

2004-05-04 Thread Marv Boyes
I've been using Xfce4 near-exclusively for a couple of months now, and I've absolutely
fallen in love with it-- coming from KDE, I feel like I've graduated, in a way. ;)
Unfortunately, I've run into a serious problem in the last couple of weeks and hope
that someone can help.

Once every day or two, for no apparent reason, every single application opened in a
particular workspace will suddenly disappear. It's like I killed them all at once.
There's no warning, there are no error messages-- everything in that workspace just
vanishes. It has (so far) only happened in whichever workspace is active; applications
opened in other workspaces are unscathed. It appears to be random-- I haven't been
able to pin the behavior to a particular application or action. Sometimes it happens
while I'm working; other times I'll leave the room and return several minutes later to
find everything gone. I haven't been able to purposely duplicate the problem.

It happens on both my home and work computers, too-- while both are running Mandrake
9.2, the computers themselves basically have only the Intel architecture in common.
The two are configured and run very differently. I installed Xfce4 using the same
packages on both machines. I had thought that perhaps there was some kind of conflict
with software I had installed at home, but that wouldn't explain why I see the same
behavior at work.

Is anyone familiar with this issue? I've had a quick look at the Xfce4 forums, and
haven't seen anything promising. I was going to post this over there, but I worried
that perhaps I've been missing something painfully obvious. I've embarrassed myself in
this list before, so I know what to expect. ;)

Thanks very much in advance.

supposed to be iconless ? would also like to change the default web

switch to it. just need to find out how it works..

1. You hijacked a thread.
2. Please remove the reply-to setting in your MUA.
3. Have you read any of the XFce4 docs?

The system tray only works for apps that honor that system--I only know
of a few like Gaim and Liferea. The systray is *not* a taskbar or a
place for minimized apps (other than those I mentioned). It has to be
enabled on your panel--you know how to add/modify items on the panel,
right?

You can use xftaskbar or iconbox for everything else.

Change window settings through the settings manager window manager
decoration style and there are a ton to choose from. If you can't find
it maybe you didn't install the xfwm4-themes or styles.

I don't know what you mean by navigational menu.

To change default browser, edit ~/.bashrc and add the line:
export BROWSER=your_fav_browser_here

[newbie] xfce4-4.0.3

2004-01-08 Thread Charles A Edwards
I now have the xfce-4.0.3 rpms

This is a maintenance release.

Due to the memory leak found in the window manager code, users of all previous
versions of xfce4 beta and xfce 4.0.x releases are highly encouraged to upgrade.

At the moment the rpms are only available by using urpmi/rpmdrake, too lazy to update
the index file today, maybe I'll get to it tomorrow.

[newbie] XFce4 and gdm

2003-11-25 Thread Terence J. Golightly
Greetings,

I recently installed rpms for xfce4 from the
http://clevername.homeip.net. I followed the directions until I got to
the part on letting which kdm not my dm know where to find xfce4. I use
gdm. I tried using Fndsession and received no messages and no changes
as far as I can tell. So I da finally looked at the file:

more /usr/sbin/fndSession produced:
#!/bin/sh
# fndSession (c) MandrakeSoft, Chmouel Boudjnah
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
## FindSession for kdm and gdm.

[ -x /usr/sbin/chksession ] || {
echo I can't find /usr/sbin/chksession
echo check your installation
exit 1
}

if [ -e /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc ];then
LIST=`/usr/sbin/chksession -k` perl -pi -e
's|^SessionTypes=.*|$ENV{LIST}|'\
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
fi

if [ -d /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions ];then
/usr/sbin/chksession -g
fi

Now a man of chksession found the -g switch to look at the
/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions subdirectory and here is where I found the wm's
that gdm knows about. My question is each file listed there calls makes
a successive call of a script Xsession using the selected file as an cml
switch.

What do I need to do to insert the XFce4 start up scipt there? Is it as
easy as setting up a simple script calling startxfce4 or is it more
involved? If you require more detail I'll try to provide it, but the
deeper I got in to the scripts the more unsure I became.

Thanks,

Terry

back it up if you want to keep it, or specify another output file (I
think it's the -o switch). Run it with mmaker xfce4. You can find

My guess is that he's using a custom start script or the one in
/usr/local/etc/xfce4, which could default to looking for the menu in
/usr/local/etc/xfce4. I set mine up with the xinitrc file in ~/.xfce4,

Ever since I've download this stuff, however, other problems have been occuring. For
example, everytime I try to use mplayer to play a wmv file or xine to play a quicktime
file (I have the plugins installed for both of these programs), xine and mplayer both
just lock up. RealPlayer 8 does the same when I try to view some RealPlayer files
from the web. Any ideas?

Hi,

You can use various themes in the panel. Click the setup button in the
panel go to the panel settings and pick a theme. If you want to
mix and match, the theme icons are located in
/usr/local/share/xfce4/themes if you're using my rpm's.

Or, if you want to further customize the panel, you can find icons in
/usr/share/icons and /usr/share/pixmaps.

Menumaker will overwrite the default xfce4 menu (~/.xfce4/menu.xml), so
back it up if you want to keep it, or specify another output file (I
think it's the -o switch). Run it with mmaker xfce4. You can find
options by running mmaker -h.

2003-07-21 Thread Eric Huff
If you add the dir they are in to your rpm sources (this can be done in
mcc if need be) you can install them all at once.

mcc (at cli) then software -- software sources -- add -- borwse
(don't worry about hdlist). Then install by repository or something
like that.

For the last round, there were 4 that had to be installed in order, so
don't forget to do those first (if that's still a rule.)

You COULD open a terminal in that directory and type:

rpm -ivh --force --nodeps *.rpm

...but I'd advise doing it by the listed sequence on his website.

I would just install the first four that require a certain sequence
manually with:

rpm -ivh libxxx.rpm

Then I'd move those 4 to a subdirectory and then do:

rpm -ivh *.rpm

to install the rest. Unless, of course, you don't want to install all
the packages. For example, I no longer use the iconbox or file mangler
and I think a lot of people probably don't, too.

Or, add them as a urpmi source like Eric or Joe suggested.

Grant,

You can ignore the My startup script and use XFcd4's script, which is
at /usr/local/bin/startxfce4. So, you'd have to edit
/etc/X11/wmsession.d/19xfce4 (or whatever number you gave it) to point
to that script in both the exec lines.

Note that NAME in /etc/X11/wmsession.d/19xfce4 is case-sensitive in that
you need to use the same thing in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. So, if
it's XFce4 in the first it needs to be that in the second.

Clear as mud? As an alternative, if you want to use the my startup
script, did you make it executable? (chmod +x scriptname)

Let us know how you get along.

Jack, that is if you want to add an XFce4 entry to KDM, the graphical
login manager. If you don't want to do that, you can ignore it.

You *can* use the startup script I provided, but I really think
/usr/local/bin/startxfce4 is better. If you save it as .xsession
(backup your old .xsession if you have one) and choose Default in KDM,
it will execute the .xsession script. It has to be executable (chmod u+x
.xsession)

If you just log in via command line, you can execute
/usr/local/bin/startxfce4 to start xfce4.

I can't really help with GDM.

As far as modifying scripts, it must be a permission issue. Who owns the
script you want to modify? If you're talking about something system-wide
you most likely have to be root to modify it.

Glad it's working. You don't have startxfce4 in /usr/local/bin?

Really all you need is:

xfce-mcs-manager
xfwm4 --daemon
xftaskbar4
xfdesktop
exec xfce4-panel

I'm back to using the taskbar now instead of the iconbox; you can run
them both at the same time I suppose.

Most everything else is a panel plugin or available through setup.
Right-click the panel to add a new item or set the properties of the
various packages.

So if that's the case, I should be able to save it as .xinitrc and then
fire up startx - mainly because I don't use DM at all...I do console
login...

I did notice that it was built for /usr/local/ instead of the MDK
default of /usr/X11R6 - so that throws a bit off, but manageable.

I'm trying to figure out how to get it to fire up with Xtart - I reckon
that's going to take some mucking about...(g)
