[newbie-it] compliazione kernel

2000-04-07 Per discussione Davide Cavallari

Ho installato da poco Mandrake7.0. Poichè nel kernel 2.2.14 fornito non
è compreso il supporto per il processore Athlon, ho tentato di compilare
il kernel 2.3.48.
Dopo averlo configurato con 'make xconfig', ho dato i comandi: 'make
dep', 'make clean', 'make bzImage'. Tuttavia, dopo poco la compilazione
si è interrotta. Questi sono gli ultimi messaggi del programma:

/usr/src/linux/include/linux/sched.h: At top level:
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/sched.h:491: `prof_buffer' used prior to
declaration
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/sched.h:492: `prof_len' used prior to
declaration
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/sched.h:493: `prof_shift' used prior to
declarationmake: *** [init/main.o] Error 1

Ho tentato anche con il precedente kernel-2.3.47, ma è stato inutile.
Come posso fare?
 Grazie mille, Davide

Re: [newbie] Office Suite for Linux

2000-04-07 Per discussione Mark Potochnik

I have it and am VERY happy with it. I did have a couple of bugs in it.
If you logout as a user before closing Office it will cause errors in
your file system and
it won't rerun under that user without a "fix".

Other than that I'm VERY happy to have my Quattro Pro back
I do miss being able to create my own toolbar which I could do in WIn...
The help is nowhere as good
But it's running under MY operating system

Peculiar? No.

In kppp is a check box asking if you want to configure your hostname
from their server. You have this checked. It logs in, changes the name
of your system, and you no longer have permission to do anything in X.

[newbie] problems with netscape crashing when address book used

2000-04-07 Per discussione duncan

Can anyone please help

Every time I use my address book or even try to access it causes
a shut down of communicator which is very annoying .

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the netscape files but
somewhere the system is remembering the address book and i dont
know which file to delete.

I think the problem arose after importing an address book from
windows netscape 4.6 and also a similar one from linux mandrake
6.0 this produced some duplicate entries which was okay at first
but when i tried to delete some of the extra entries they wouldnt
go. or they would only go if the lower of several entries was
deleted and then the next one up. I also could only delete two or
three entries before it stopped deleting and I had to close the
address book before recommencing .

I am happy to ditch this corrupted address book but dont know
wher to go from here .

Thankyou in advance.

Run 'FDISK', nothing will be done before you give the command 'w' in fdisk !
and you can keep away at any time.
So, keep in mind that the linux boot must be below the 1024st cylinder !
You can divide your HD in 4 primary partitions:
1. Linux native or dos (add a swap partition to linux)
2. dos or linux

3. dos
4. dos

After that you can setup the 'logical' partitions.

Type 'm' in FDISK for the menu.
Type 'p' to print what about your HD. etc

For dos there is no more need for more than 1 primary partition.
In linux there must be at least 1 primary and 1 swap partition.
Give linux at least 4-6 G (depends what you install)

If you don't trust 'fdisk', run 'FIPS'.

Try it out.

Use "setup" as superuser. Do your best at selecting the closes thing to
your monitor and test to see if it looks okay. It doesn't
have to be perfect because you can do the fine-tuning in the next step.
Then open up "/etc/X11/XF86Config" in some editor. Now go
to the "Monitor Section". Change the two lines "HorizSync" "VertRefresh"
to match your monitor's specifications. Restart X.

Please let me know if you need more info.

Try ctl-alt-plus or ctl-alt-minus and see if that changes your

  If
not, try running "xf86config" from either the command line, or from an

Hello,

I bought myself a copy of Linux Mandrake 6.5 and I tried installing it but
I can't get past the part when i have to select my SCSI adapter. I'm also
runnig windows 98 and i'm setting up a dual boot system. I have a Promise
Technology Inc. Ultra66 IDE controller but it is not present in the choices
they give me. I've tried each of the choices one by one and non of them
work. How could I make Linux recognize it?
Thank you for your help!

Re: [newbie] 3Com 905b Ethernet cards

2000-04-07 Per discussione Johnny Nospam

Guys, I've been having the same problem. I used
Lothar and netconf too. But your posts gave me the
missing link (for my situation at least). There
wasn't a module specifically for the 3c90x for the
kernel I'm running (and I would guess you too), but
there is one for the 3c59x; I just didn't know to use
it for my 3c90x. Try this fro the command line:

insmod 3c59x
ifconfig ether0 172.16.20.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 172.16.20.255

You can replace the IP info with your own. After that
you should be able to ping other devices on the
configured subnet. My only issue now is that I've got
to do these two steps every time I reboot. I'm not
sure netconf is doing anything for me. Now I'm going
to look up in one of my books how to make those
command stick. Unless somebody already knows the
answer and posts it :)

Rick

Is that *actually* a PCMCIA modem, or is it simply an internal laptop

If it's the built-in, it's likely a Winmodem (they take up less space =)

Re: [newbie] Problem with X (blank screen).

2000-04-07 Per discussione Austin L. Denyer

Hi.

 First of all, run

 startx 2 x.out

and afterwards take a look at x.out:

 vi x.out (or emacs x.out)

I tried this and got the following three lines:

localhost being added to access control list
kpanel: waiting for windowmanager
kpanel: ok, commencing initialization

Not the most informative ;-)

When I installed the "can you see me" test screen worked fine...

and see what it says. It may be you need to configure your
XF86Config file in some way, or... or it may be something else entirely.

I couldn't see anything obviously wrong in XF86Config, although as a newbie
that probably doesn't count for much...

The system itself installs fine, but I can't get X to work. During the
setup (and later using Xconfigurator) the test works fine, but when I
try to
run X for real I get a blank screen a few seconds after the blue
background
appears. If I Ctrl-Alt-BS out, linux is still running (I can type
'reboot'
and the system obliges) but I still have a blank screen (Alt-F(n) does
not
  help).

Hello all,

I've got a tricky little problem with my modem. First

the win modem driver at Linmodems.org but it is pre-compiled for an earlier
kernal version. Does anyone know how to get a newer release of this
driver? (I already have 5.68)

Btw, I also tried insmod -f ./ltmodem.o in a vain attempt to
force the kernal to accept the module. This was what was instructed if
there were kernal differences.

[newbie] A book you should read

2000-04-07 Per discussione Stephen F. Bosch

Here is a general message for the newbies out there who are lost and
confused.

Linux is NOT Windows. Linux is Unix. Unix is relies heavily on command
line instruction. Remember DOS? It's time to get used to that again.

Let me suggest a *VERY* good book which will:

Tell you what Unix is
Tell you about its history
Teach the basics of file editing using the most popular and widespread
editors
Teach you basic shell commands and scripting
Teach you how to use ubiquitous files and utilities.

and ultimately give you the background you need to successfully use
almost any variety of Unix.

The book:

Unix System V Release 4: An Introduction (second edition)
by K.H. Rosen, R.R. Rosinski, J. M. Farber, D. A. Host
ISBN 0-07-882130-4

Learn this fundamentals, and there is no longer any reason to fear Linux
or any kind of Unix.

Have fun!

You go in the "file" menu, and choose settings, configuration, or

If you just want a full-screen command prompt, you hit ctrl+alt+F1 when

If you don't want linux to automatically start X, you type :
linux init 3

Well the kfm browser in KDE can be used to a point,
although it does not have java or frames, it is useable
for text and simple graphics. see http://www.kde.org

Netscape for Linux has its ups and downs,
and requires a very fast machine with alot of memory
minimum 64Megabytes, and can crash alot. http://www.netscape.com

Mozilla (an offshoot from Netscape?)
is still a toddler and needs much work but from
what I have experienced is coming right along
and looks like it will be stable someday. http://www.mozilla.org

Opera I dont know much about except that its
still a baby and not really ready for use.

lynx is for text browsing only, when you
don't care about the graphics and such, if
you just want to view text information.

Re: [newbie] Questions

2000-04-07 Per discussione Vic

Wine is like a software adaptor between
the linux system and a windows application
so that the windows app can properly run
on a linux filesystem, but it is not finished
yet and does not always work,
the command would be for example---

wine windowsappname.exe

so you put the wine in front of the
windows app name when you try to run it,
oh and this has to be done at commandline,
click on the little black box looking thing
at the bottom of your screen there should be
a panel, this is more often referred to as the
K-Panel.

To enter your settings into K-Mail,
first click on File which is located at the
upper right corner of your main K-mail window.

Afterwhich click on Settings which should
pop up a window that says settings at the top.

Then click on the Network tab at the top.

then almost down to the bottom there
is a rectangle Add button click this
once and another little square should
pop up that says Select Account.

Click in the Pop3 hole and
make a dot in it by clicking
in there, then click the
rectangular OK button.

Afterwhich another window
that says Configure Account
should pop up and it should
give you the spaces in which
to enter the Name of the
account such as your ISP
or what ever you want to
call it, your login name
to your isp's e mail (your email box)
your Password for it,
The Host, and this is they key
thing that your looking for,
say the name of your isp
is www.internet.com
lets put pop.internet.com
in where host is, that is
if thats the name of your
isp, which I don't know,
but you will get the idea.

leave the Port space alone
unless your isp tells you
that they use another Port
other than 110

then click the little tiny
boxes to put a tick (check)
mark in the ones you want to
use like Store POP password
in config file, this is
if you dont want to keep
typing in your password
every time you check your
e mail.

then usually leave the
delete mail from server
checked unless you want alot
of mail to build up on your
isp's mail server.

Then click the rectangle OK,
and click the last rectangle OK
and you should be all set up.

As for text mode, you need to either
do a control+alt+F1 for full text screen mode,
or click the little black box on your K-panel for
a virtual terminal, if you want Linux to always
boot into text mode, you need to
locate a file called inittab under the
directory /etc

the contents of this file in /etc/inittab look
something like this:

#
# inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up
# the system in a certain run-level.
#
# Author: Miquel van Smoorenburg, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
# Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes
#

# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)

There's netscape 4.7 and 6.0, and a bunch of others.

A good resource - goto www.cnet.com, at the top click
on linux - theres a message board at the bottom, with
a question "lightweight browsers" -- has a bunch of
'em listed.

Re: [newbie] problems with netscape crashing when address book used

2000-04-07 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Delete your /home/your_usr_name/.netscape directory and you're problems should
clear up. You'll loose all your bookmarks and everything, but it will clear out
your address book. And then Netscaep will create a new ".netscape" once your
run it again. Or actually, if you want to save your bookmarks, you could try to
make a backup of your "bookmarks.html" file located in .netscape, and then
after after you delete .netscape/ and Netscape creates a new one, copy your old
bookmarks.html ontop of the new bookmarks.html.

Re: [newbie] gcc not working

2000-04-07 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Looks like you dont' have all the libraries installed. Go to /usr/include and
see if stdio.h is there. If it's not, then you'll need to download an RPM of
whatever header files you need, like
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandrake/cooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS/glibc-devel-2.1.3-2mdk.i586.html

for stdio.h.

But from what it sounds like, this is a newly installed system so to save you
the headache of later compiles, you may want to consider reinstalling and this
time select all the packages that have ANYTHING to do with programming and/or
libraries.
Hmm, reading through the installation procedure of Mandrake 7, looks like the
installation that you do ("recommended") doesn't let you choose what packages
you install. In that case, you can either look up each libary you're missing (I
use http://google.com/linux to search for the file and see what rpm file it is
in, and then use rpmfind.net to download it from) or else do a "Custom"
installation, which you probally wouldn't want to do since you're a newbie.
Your choice though.

And if any Mandrake peoples are reading this, you guys really need to make the
installation of all the libraries standard for all installations. It's a huge
hassle to go track down everything if you don't have it, and newbies don't
relieze that they'll need all those libraries (since they don't program) until
they start compiling stuff from source.

 Hello!
I have just installed Mandrake 7.0 yesterday I am
 a very newbie!!! :)
 i chose the 'recommended installation'
i installed mandrake on its own partition!

 after installation... i tried gcc
 but it didn't work!
i tried the famout "Hello World" example!
 but the compiler complained that
stdio.h: No such file or directory
 what to do!
i tried to reinstall linux again but this didn't work!
any help would be greatly appreciated!
 thank u

Re: [newbie] Netscape 6

2000-04-07 Per discussione Anthony Huereca

Mozilla is the browser that came out of the Open Sourcing of Netscape. From
what I understand, Mozilla contains very little old Netscape code, but it was
Netscape's project. Netscape just takes the stable snapshots of Mozilla and
adds their own stuff to it (like the Netscape logo) and then releases it as
Netscape 6.xx. So it's a combined community thing.

Did anyone else on the list notice that Netscape 6 is Mozilla 5?

I knew the same ppl made them, but I didn't realize that Moz5 was beta testing
 for NS 6.

okay...this is what I did...

first, you have to totally un-install
both wu-ftpd and anonftp...
then delete all /home/ftp directories...

everything...including etc,lib,pub, and bin...
then re-install Proftpd as usual...along with
its partner...either standalone,or inetd...
and wahlah...
plus check all permissions...
