Oltre a quello che ti hanno già suggerito, tieni conto che lo stesso Konqueror (e altri file manager) permette di visualizzare i thumbnail dei file immagine quando entri in una directory. Questi thumbnail sono poi conservati in una dir .kde/... dove poi recuperarli facilmente. Vai nella directory dove hai scaricato il kde 3.0.1 e usa urpmi. A console scrivi: urpmi ./*.rpm urpmi e` il programma che sta sotto il software manager e che gestisce automaticamente le eventuali dipendenze dei singoli pacchetti. Ho installato da qualche tempo Kde 3.0.1 (a proposito, si vocifera di un 3.0.2...) ma per chiudere la sessione ho trovato solo il tasto logout, invece di quel menu presente sul 2.2.2 che mi permetteva il reboot ed altre cose. Ho sbagliato qualcosa o è un fatto normale ? Inoltre ho cercato Gnome 2.0, che sembra ben riuscito, ma gli RPM (altro non posso ancora gestire) per Mandrake sono presenti solo assieme al resto del Cooker. Qualcuno in lista li ha per caso trovati ? Grazie Franco

Ho eseguito un'installazione _completa_ ma, mancano tanti programmi da riga di comando importanti come cfdisk per esempio e i tool di amministrazione grafici alcuni funzionano a metà in particolare diskdruid è abilitato solo a leggere, s'è trasformato in diskview; è strano perchè in fase d'installazione l'ho usato per formattare, cancellare ecc. Sarà perchè la mia è una versione presa sulla rivista InternetNews ? Allora ho telefonato alla RedHat italia e mia hanno detto che tutte le versioni che vengono rilasciate anche in questo modo sono complete eccetto la presenza dei source e dei programmi pay e che il sistema operativo vero e proprio è formato da 3 CD (come quelli che ho io) poi ci sono altri CD per i programmi pay ecc., ma non mi è stata data una risposta sul fatto dei programmi da riga di comando e dei tool di amministrazione. Mi hanno consigliato di scrivere a [EMAIL PROTECTED] ma ancora sto aspettando la risposta. Ho provato allora a visitare il sito delle Redhat per trovare informazioni ma non ho trovato niente, solo informazioni generali. Anche se questa non è una lista per RedHat, l'argomento è interessante... Grazie ad ADSL infattio io di solito mi scarico le iso delle distro che preferisco: Mandrake in primis. Poi quando esce il Power Pack lo compro. Ebbene i cd della download edition differiscono notevolmente da quelli della Power Pack. La cosa ridicola è che sembra riuscita meglio la download edition proprio per il discorso che fai tu. Ha più tool da riga di comando, ha più programmi gpl, ecc... Mah. Strano atteggiamento. Se ti riferisci al termina sessione da KDE avviato, allora apri il Centro di controllo KDE, clicca su personalizzazione e su gestione della sessione poi spunti conferma d'uscita su Generale. [newbie-it] montaggio CD
Uso Linux (Mandrake 8.2) da due settimane e mi sono iscritto alla lista per principianti solo perché non c'era quella per ultra-principianti; però se qualcuno si degna di rispondere alle mie domande sicuramente ovvie, prometto di passare in seguito a quesiti più interessanti. Ho letto nei vari manuali che ho sotto mano che è possibile consentire all'utente generico il montaggio e smontaggio dei CD Rom e del floppy; allora, secondo le indicazioni, ho aggiunto nel file /etc/fstab le opzioni users,noauto alle righe corrispondenti ai tre aggeggi (lettore CD, masterizzatore, che se per ora già funzionasse come lettore andrebbe bene, e floppy). Adesso come utente generico posso accedere alle cartelle rispettive, ma il montaggio è ancora una possibilità esclusiva dell'utente root. Qualcuno sa dirmi come si fa? E l'opzione supermount che ho trovato già predisposta, e secondo il manuale dovrebbe eseguire il montaggio automaticamente, quando diavolo è che funziona? Grazie Giorgio

Frank, Thank you for your prompt reply and inspired suggestion of using 'drakxconf'. I did'nt know that existed on the command line! Another list member suggested 'mcc', which apears to do the same thing; up pops the same wonderful box to sort out lifes many problems. It's amazing. Having used that tool, after the Xwindow Test a box, it reads :- An error has occurred: could not open default font 'fixed'. Using 'startx' creates the fo;;owing message:- Font TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 2 failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1' Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'. As I have LM 8.2 on two separate root partitions, I can transfer my Nokia 447V + S3 86C386 TRIO 3D/2X graphics card with 4 mg + display 1024 x 786 24 bit screen, details from one which works to the other which held the same details and did work. Gerard, Thank you for your prompt reply and inspired suggestion of using 'mcc'. I did'nt know that existed on the command line! Another reply suggested 'drakxconf' which seems to be the same, although I am not sure that it is. Having used that tool, after the Xwindow Test a box, it reads :- An error has occurred: could not open default font 'fixed'. Using 'startx' creates the fo;;owing message:- Font TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 2 failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1' Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'. As I have LM 8.2 on two separate root partitions, I can transfer my Nokia 447V + S3 86C386 TRIO 3D/2X graphics card with 4 mg + display 1024 x 786 24 bit screen, details from one which works to the other which held the same details and did work. I still don't know about all the pluggins, Mozilla and Netscape seem to have so many. My old mozilla had java realtime as an rpm and I guess this serves again, and does not need changing ? I have alrerady downloaded from mozilla.org , javs, flash and macromedia ,though not real audio, I guess these will not do since they are for mozilla.org's own tar bar install. Sevatio, Yes, this is possible. I use dyndns.org. Basically what you do is setup a subdomain at one of the domain names they let you choose from, and then install a client on your server. Whenever the DHCP connection is refreshed, the new IP is sent to dyndns.org and the host record is updated immediately, therefore you can always connect to your machine via the subdomain. I have upgraded LM8.1 to 8.2 twice, once leaving StarOffice 5.2 in place and once after uninstalling 5.2. In the first case, SO Writer would load and function for a while -- and suddenly disappear completely. I suspected 5.2 had caused a problem, and tried an upgrade on another insallation (8.1 to 8.2) Now SO 6.0 seemed to be running okay, but when I try to save a file I get this notice: StarOffice 6.0 Error saving the document Untitled1: Wrong parameters The operation was startted under an invalid parameter. Bob Bob, if you know where the main files are for star office, and I suspect they are in /usr/local, go there and check permissions on the /usr/local/soffice file (or whatever it is called). If you don't know, do a slocate, or locate or whereis or[oops didn't finish) to find the file and check the permissions. The above seems to have gone out as HTML, can someone confirm. I am having a devil of a time figuring out how to get outlook to stop sending in HTML. Dennis M.

[newbie] Strange crashes when idle
Hi all, I don't know if I consider myself a newbie, having run linux of some sort for about three years, but I don't consider myself an expert, so here I am. My problem is unfortunately hard to describe, and what I'm really looking for is ideas for establishing what the problem might be. Basically, I installed Mandrake 8.2 a few days ago, and it's crashed once or twice a day since then. I was tolerating it, until this morning's crash when my root partition was damaged. Now I want to get to the bottom of it. When it's crashed I can see that my CPU meter is suggest a very high CPU load (around 4 lines high on a standard xload meter). Various things lock up, generally my web browser. I'm suspicious of mozilla/galeon at present, but don't really know for sure. Eventually the whole thing dies, and I can ctrl-alt-F1 etc to get to a shell, but if I run anything (like pine) the whole thing stops, and eventually I can't do anything (like login from another prompt). At that point I have to reset my computer... As I said, this morning the disk was damaged by this, and I had to manually run fsck to fix it up. Annoying. Anyone experience similar weird problems? I'm going to try not running any mozilla based browsers for a while, to see if that helps at all. I'll let you know if it does. Thanks for any help you can offer me! What mother board do you have? and are you sure you copied the lines in their entirety? You can copy the lines with kedit or gedit text editors, probably the easiest is to navigate to the files and open with advanced editor. [newbie] OO print to file (pdf)
I'm trying to write an OO.org doc to pdf. When I try to open it with xpdf, I get this error: Error: May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway) Error (0): PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table... Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary Error: Couldn't read xref table GV is able to open it, but when I switch between pages it takes forever to display the page. To jump in here , I have had problems with LM_sensors in 8.2 as well. in 8.0 it works perfectly. under 8.2 only one of the sensors is seen, and it registers the a cpu temp of 127 degrees C. quite silly and wrong. I can make it read a correct value, but the value never changes. We had a similar problem. We had weird symptoms such as a logger looked like it was running away, find made the machine hang (had to use the power button on that one) but only sometimes. Turned out to be flaky RAM. As soon as we replaced it and doubled it, all was right with the world. We used http://www.memtest86.com/ for testing the RAM. Normally I'd think the same thing, except that I've already been through the bad RAM episode last year with this computer. I had the RAM replaced and, as you said, all was well. I guess I should test it again anyway to be sure. The scary thing was that last time I used a RAMtester it didn't find anything, but the RAM _was_ corrupt. Yikes. Dear experts Could you give me a little help answering the add below ??? (It can interest others newbies) Linux home-user (not IT professional but above dummy in computer level), myself, that recently installed Mandrake 8.2 (2 cds pack), with no time for formal course, with some initial difficulty, looks for: an excellent book (just one) of Linux with home-user approach, in style: step-by-step / self-study,based on Redhat or Mandrake preferably (if it is important), updated version, covering the basic topics from: linux installation, soft installation/upgrade; use of utilities (backup, anti-virus, firewall), hard/drivers upgradeuntil setting home network (at most), for learn and reference use. Thanks, that did it. The closest localedrake could get me was es_MX, but that's close enough. Now when I install a new package or force an upgrade of an existing package, it appears in Spanish. The only app I'm afraid to do this on is my email client, Evolution. If I force an upgrade, will I lose my mail, address book, and the like? When I remove my yahoo messenger, it also removed the evolution and gkhtml RPMs I thought I was in trouble of losing my files. What I did was reinstall those two RPMS and presto, back as it was, nothing was lost. the problem is, my evolution and other word processor apps cant still display japanese characters, i dunno why. I still haven't fixed it yet, so i guessHelp? My envionment is in English, I just want to make Japanese available when I need it. [newbie] reiser? or something foolish?

System-wide upgrades are likely to cause some problems anyway but here is the method for SO 6.0 so that you can run it afterward It is not an upgrade artifact in this case but an improper installation. 1. Uninstall SO6 2. Look for two files named .sversionrc and .user60.rdb (note the leading dots!) and delete them if you find them (I found them in my home path) 3. In an xterm window, log in as root (su) 4. urpmi staroffice-en 5. /usr/lib/office60_en/setup to start the setup script 6. select the local (200MB) installation. Change the path for this installation to /opt/staroffice6.0 7. complete the installation (btw, if you don't have a Java runtime environment installed, you can do so by clicking the INSTALL button on the JRE screen) 8. exit 9. execute the setup script again as a local user, and this time select workstation installation. If you do not activate it exactly this way, you will have permissions problems with saving backup files and such. Please not that you can login as another user and run the setup script (just click the menu button for Staroffice writer) to set it up as another workstation installation for that user. I have noticed some instability, filesystem dependent, on the binary-only NVIdia drivers from the distro, somewhat but not completely removed by the more recent Mandrake-specific drivers from the site. The XFree drivers do not sem to be subject to this problem. I also don't see a network card on the interrupt scheme. If you have one I bet it is on IRQ 10 with the NVIdia card which can all by itself explain your problem. My problem is that I have no idea how to use the tape drive. Could someone give me some pointers please. I think there's a Tape howto over in the howto docs, but once you have the tape working, it's pretty easy to use - you just use the /dev/st0 (it is scsi, right?) or /dev/nst0 devises - the second is the no-rewind device. Is it worth playing with? Do yuo like to make backups? Or do you want to risk losing your data? :) Which tape would work with it? My surestore drive uses 4mm DAT tapes - they are DDS-2 and capacity is 2 gigs uncompressed. When I got the drive, that was just right for copacity; nowadays it is a bit small. But I rarely need to back everything up. The tapes I've been using are Imation 4mm tapes - $5 bucks a pop when I got the drive. What backup software could I use with it? Lots support tapes - since it is a device you can just use 'tar'. I've found that 'tar' is just as easy to use, and probably preferable over other backup software. Plus, Arkeia would need X, which translates to a pretty big system build before you could restore a tape. Tar can fit on a rescue diskette. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? What you described involves more than 11 separate steps ... and then I still don't know what to do to crop the captured image to just the portion I want: Well, we'll leave cropping the image for now - one would still have to do that step even in windows, unless you want the whole screen, or the screen region you saved is off a little bit. Using gimp just to do a 'save screen' operation seems a bit excessive. There are other tools avaeilable to do the job - in the past, I use the little utility 'xwd' to dump the contents of the screen. Of course, even then you have to convert the data from the X window dump fotrmat to something more accessible, such as jpeg or tiff. Using gimp makes sense if you are doing many other operations in gimp and need a screen shot. You might want to do some experimenting, but it seems that: # xwd | xwdtopnm | pnmtotiff wowie.tiff works well to create a tiff file of the screen contents. You can use other tools as well to generate the desired file. You just need to use the mouse in the xwd process to define the screen region - the other progs then take over to do the conversion in parallel. Saving an entire screen image (1280x1024x24 color) on an Athlon 1ghz is maybe 1 second or so. Note that the ppm/pnm etc files are part of the pbmplus series, which can pretty well convert files of any graphics format to any other one, with a lot of extra options. Compression to jpeg can be done by cjpeg, which seems to not be around. It's not on my Mandrake 8.1 - what happened to it? I remember having it before :(.
