He went on to say that he expected that too to give way in the not too distant future. He confidently talked of a large proportion of the city dwellers having access to the internet, and said that it was expected that even the government would have to admit defeat on that score. The impression we got was that change was still painful to the government, who wanted it in theory but were still afraid of it, and that many of the people, the more educated at least, had confidence in the country to change at a pace that was right for them, even if they sometimes felt impatient. Re[2]: [newbie] What have I done?
Hey Anne, 4/ Did you try a different KDE account or Gnome? I only loaded KDE. What do you mean by 'a different KDE account'? A different user account. Log out of KDE and select a different user and login as he/she. You could also try logging in as root if there is no other user you can log as into, even though this is discouraged (you should rather go offline before being root). You could also add a new user and see if you have problems in this new account, too. If no then something is wrong with your account, especially with some of your personal settings. Does this slow-dir-opening actually only happen in konqueror? What's with Krusader or any other file manager for that matter? What happens if you Ctrl-Alt-F1 and open a dir with MC? And if you shut down X ie go to runlevel I think 3 (someone please coorect me if I am wrong)? You could probably check what different runlevels do by looking at man telinit. Also runlevel 1 might be worth a try. Good luck Roman Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re[2]: [newbie] How to append files to a CD-R?
Hey, How can I add or append additional files to a CD-R onto which I have already recorded or burned just a few files? Can't help here. IMO, cd-rewriteables's (cd-rw's) are not so good an idea. They cost too much, and are unreliable (ie, harder to read than cd-r's by most all devices). With cd-r's costing 30¢ each, rewritables just aren't worth it. I only ever bought 2 re-writes, and that was years ago. From my personal experience I must disagree with you. CD-RWs are great if you need to take a lot of software with you, for instance to show your friend. You can also burn it with some MP3s and use it in an MP3 capable CD-player, not worrying about that you waste spae with songs you won't want to listen to later. My noname CD-RW is readable by all the CD-ROM drives I tried it in and it works fine, as opposed to a Verbatim CD-RW which just won't work with my CD-RW drive. (Can be drive's fault, of course, but the drive works with everything else.) And last but in no way least I think CD-RW is going to replace traditional 3.5 diskettes. Concerning the original post I think multisession is the best way but you cannot add files to a non-multisession CD. From Tom's examples, I derived the following two key lines which I put in a shell script that I named burncd mkisofs -r -o cdimage /home/joe/data cdrecord -v speed=2 dev=0,0 cdimage But I had to omit the word eject because I got this error message: cdrecord: No such file or directory. No read access for 'eject'. Can anyone explain why this error message and how to get eject to work? doesn't do any better. For some reason usin '-eject' with a cdrecord operation always works with my burner, cdrom2. Gotta be hardware I think the reason is that it should be -eject, not eject. [newbie] Users can't logon under X
My home box was working fine, so of course I had to mess with it. I went through the Software Manager and removed all the packages I (thought I) didn't need. I freed up a lot of disk space, but now users can't log on under X. If a user attempts to log on from the graphical logon window, X appears to restart and the graphical logon window returns. A user can log on to tty1 through tty6, but gets a bash prompt instead of the usual [user@computer directory] prompt. My guess is that I removed a package that I shouldn't have. Any ideas as to what it was so I can put it back before my kids kill me? Warren Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] [Q] Kernel compilation
Hello, I'm trying to learn how to build a new kernel. I'm a little afraid by all the questions I have to answer. As my system does work properly for now, I think it would be easier to have the current kernel options modules in a list, then remove or add what I want then compile it. Is there such a list somewhere on my system ? (linux mandrake 8.2) Thanx in advance. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Mandrake absolutely refuses to keep the clock sync'd with the hardware clock. It always loses 4 hours, and when I shut the machine down, it THEN syncs with the hardware clock, forcing me to update the BIOS to the correct time every time I boot up the machine. there was a simple file to remove that fixed this for me, but i forget what. it had to do with the time zone being set in two different files. i will see if i can find it and get back to you. 2.) Software Manager has just decided that I didn't need CDs 1 and 2 on my source list, and deleted the entries for them. How can I get them back? you should be able to do a define sources in software manager with the cd in the drive, choose a name (cd whatever) and it should re-add the cd. i find that if i lose 2 cd's i sometimes have to then exit software manager and load it again before adding the second or they will not stay. if that fails try (as root) in a shell urpmi.addmedia (some-media-name) (directory-path) with /mnt/cdrom (most likely) as the path. - -- There is a reason IIS is refered to as Inherently Insecure Server. shane Profile at: http://dmoz.org/profiles/shen.html Proud to be a DMOZ editor since 10-98 Mandrake Users Club Member http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/club/ Registered linux user #101606 http://counter.li.org/ -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD4DBQE9NuoBBwq+ZwvIN/oRAnoCAJYisAFUfoM//rN/BOoTCkkfZNdfAJ9UG0dd ludd4jdTuuuDZtf70MNJaQ== =T8DY -END PGP SIGNATURE- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I'm a newbie and wish to transfer files from my networked Mandrake 8.2 machine to my home account on the university server. I'm sure mandrake ftp? Well, ftp will do the job and there are plenty of variants of it around, my favorite (non-graphical) is 'ncftp'. An RPM is included in the distribution. If you're using KDE, and can look at your home directory on the university server with konqueror, then you can just drag and drop files from your computer over to the server. Though there are some differences. For one thing diskdrake doesn't seem to be able to check your hard drive for bad areas and mark them, something which is quite useful if your hard drive is either brand new or well used old one. PM does a superb job in marking bad areas. Access is another problem, diskdrake is less user friendly than PM. One thing PM does not do is any of the latest file systems like ext3, XFS and Reiser. You can do anything you like in FAT32, NTFS and Ext2. with PM. PM is an excellent utility, but you don't absolutely need it. John Personally I also like PM. I always begin with a bare drive and boot the system with the PM boot disk. I then create however many partitions that I want, normally I will create all as fat32. Install 2k, you can select to which partition you wish it to install and also format it as NTFS. Install linux, using diskdrake only to format my already created partitions. But as said you do not have to have PM. Boot your linux disk and use diskdrake to create all you partitions remembering to create at least 1 fat32 for 2k. Complete the formatting then exit the linux installation and install 2k then install linux. I still do not 'trust' diskdrake to handle NTFS which is why I would do the above. If you are going to install 2k as fat32 then you can simply install 2k and use diskdrake to resize it and create your linux partitions during the mandrake install. The #1 most important thing about partitioning is that once you have used 1 program to partition a drive NEVER use a second program to change those partitions or you will end up royally f___ing up your partition table. Re: [newbie] Printing help pages
I can't remember any other apps that I can't print. My printer has two set-ups defined. Some apps let me choose, and some use what I presume is a My feeling is that if you can print from one kde app you should be able to print from any other, as they all use the same printing subsystem. I'm guessing you're using CUPS, is that true? Try printing first from kedit or some other lightweight app. If the print choice is greyed out in Kedit as well as in the helper app then there's something amiss in KDE's idea of what printer is set up. Your existing printer setup should appear under System - Printing Manager in the KDE Control Center app. FWIW I'm using a bjc250. Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] What have I done?
Keyboard input is no problem. Moving around with a word processor, for instance, is no problem. It's anything that requires loading time. Even more interestign. I hope your PATH is set to something simple and you're not scanning all those mount points looking for stuff during a load - that would really complicate things. /mnt/anything shouldn't be in your PATh. I doubt it is, but I think we're on the right track in helping you diagnose your slowdown - and it seems related to disk subsystems. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? My guess is that if there is a remote NFS partition mounted somewhere, there will be a noticeable delay in mount's execution itself. mtab That shows current mounts - fstab shows those that will get mounted on startup. none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs rw,devmode=0664,devgid=43 0 0 That's a lot of mounts - but none look like remote mounts to me either. Is there something in that usb? When you browse (or cd into) any of the mount points, are there noticeable delays in processing? Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Fwd: Sound(continues)
-- Forwarded Message -- Subject: Sound(continues) Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 20:56:19 -0500 From: Marcia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear All, I am still struggling with my sound on LM8.2 on Athlon XP +1600 with the via82xxxaudio driver installed and it works to some extent. The Cd player works just fine and the system beeps in terminals. The introductory music is not heard when Linux boots and I cannot get sound out of xmms yet. I tried the midi karaoke player but that did not work and got a message that the /dev/sequencer could not be opened. Could this be a permission problem? If not is there something I need to edit maybe in /etc/modules.conf , /etc/modules/ or some other file. I have read everything I can in the sound how-to and in alsa how-to's. I am a newbie when it comes to the depths of sound configuration. This is a brand new system with the ELitegroup ECS Socket a L7VMM motherboard with integrated video and sound, the sound, AC97 Audio Codec uses the via82xxxaudio driver. The module must be loaded or the CD player would not work I am sure. I would like to use alsa and I thought that is what is being used except it will not start in services. I have played with changing the services for alsa and sound and fiddled with the sound server over and over. I finally fiddled enough to get xmms to respond as if it is playing a song but still no sound. The bars were moving and xmms believed it was playing it, anyway. Yes I have aumix on, etc. Is there anything else I am not thinking of? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. How would I know if the alsa drivers are being used or if the oss/free are instead? Would the commercial OSS drivers solve this problem? Here is some info from my files: from dmesg: Via 686a audio driver 1.9.1 ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x414c:0x4710 (ALC200/200P) via82cxxx: board #1 at 0xE800, IRQ 5 info from /sbin/lsmod: via82cxxx_audio18144 0 uart401 6336 0 [via82cxxx_audio] ac97_codec 9568 0 [via82cxxx_audio] sound 57292 0 [via82cxxx_audio uart401] soundcore 4068 4 [via82cxxx_audio sound] From /usr/src/linux-2.4.18-6mdk/drivers/sound/Config.in dep_tristate ' VIA 82C686 Audio Codec' CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX $CONFIG_PCI dep_mbool' VIA 82C686 MIDI' CONFIG_MIDI_VIA82CXXX $CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX From /etc/modules: alias usb-interface usb-uhci probeall scsi_hostadapter ppa ide-scsi alias eth0 8139too alias sound-slot-0 via82cxxx_audio Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Re: [newbie] Do I need PartitionMagic in addition to DiskDrake?
Charlie wrote: July 18, 2002 11:37 am, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: At home, I am about to build a new computer, and I will be installing both mandrake linux and win 2000 on a single hard drive. At work, I have already installed mandrake linux on a computer that already had win 98. Everything went fine and mandrake partioned the drive for me duing installation. So, at home, as long as I install windoze first and mandrake second, is there any reason to buy PartitionMagic 7.0? I don't see myself changing partitions after everything is set up. Of couse, I might later on even though I don't plan on doing it. Changing partitions just seems like playing with fire ... in fact, I've read several customer reviews on the web saying that things went horribly wrong (but there were many other positive reviews as well). I guess I'm wondering if anyone out there re-partitions their hard drive(s) via mandrake's DiskDrake program, which would save me from spending $70 US dollars for PartitionMagic. Any advice/feedback appreciated! Thanks, Mitch ~~~ Why pay US$70 for something that's not really needed? For partition management back when I was on the 'dark side,' I used Ranish Partition Manager, a free utility that can be downloaded from your favourite freebie site. explains the use 'parted' http://software.linux.com/projects/gnuparted/?topic=412,440,332,333 to do the same thing for you and (I think) is included in MDK 8.2 disks, or available at lots of download sites. I've only had to re-partition a hard drive a (very) few times since I got off of the 'newbie re-install bus' and those times were all at fresh installs of new versions of Mandrake. But my personal data files and /home are on a separate hard drive(s). I also gave up on Macrohard Doors [© Piers Anthony Dillingham Jacob :-)] a long time ago. The biggest trouble with Partition Magic (and probably almost any other partition management software) would come from their use of differing geometries and algorithms for the task. You always run the risk of incompatibilities if you try to mix 'n' match so I suppose my advice would be that if you do use PM don't try to use anything else. Personally I'd do a little reading first: http://mobilix.org/Mobile-Guide.db/mobile-guide-p1c3s3-linux-tools-to-repartition.html http://users2.ev1.net/~mranish/part/primer.htm and: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Education/Hardware/HowTos_and_Tutorials/ may help. Good luck! :-) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com You do not need partition magic. Just leave a blank unpartitioned area on the disk for linux or use FAT32 for Windoze or both. If you want write access to the windows partition from linux, use FAT32 for your flavor of windows. Re: [newbie] SAMBA

My principal objective is to be able to access the W2K file system (for which I have administrator rights) from a Lin (ML8.2) box. TIA Paul Paul, to do what you're asking about you simply need to turn on Netbios, define the shares on the win2k box and then connect to them using some kind of samba client on the linux box. gnomba works nicely and will preserve user rights for you much better then if you define the shares that users on the linux box can access using Mandrake Control Center. _THAT_ is a mess. I wouldn't suggest using it. -- daRcmaTTeR -- Registered Linux User 182496 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Also runlevel 1 might be worth a try. I didn't dare try any of this Last time I triee Ctrl-Alft-F1 I couldn't get out of it. I'm not savvy enough, yet ctrl-alt-f1 (and f2, f3, f4, f5, etc) are all just terminals. that is they are just yet another place to log in to your machine. if you start X at boot you are running on f7, so ctrl-alt-f7 will get you back. - -- Some software money can't buy.
