I'm trying to setup a LDAP server. I've installed the server package and phpLDAPAdmin but I have no clue on what I'm doing. And as a follow-up to this lengthy thread : I received fresh CDs from HP, removed the ethernet cable from her box, re-installed WindowsXP, added a firewall (Zone Alarm), de-activated as much as I could find (Messenger, Updates, NetBIOS and a few other things), installed 4 different antivirus/antispyware applications (via a CD burnt on Mandrake), set her default browser and mailer to Mozilla, her office suite to OpenOffice.org, and - after innumerable re-boots - connected the thing to the Internet. Ran two full scans (Sygatetech and GRC Shields Up) and found everything OK. All this was accomplished thanks to the kind folks on this list. And you know what ? - Although only 14 years old, my daughter isn't exactly stupid. She now uses her box for schoolwork (Derive and OpenOffice.org) but every time she wants to use the net (mail, browsing, accessing her schools network etc..) she goes to my box, opens her linux-account and does what she wants. Transfers between the two boxes are done via floppies or CDs. She unplugged her ethernet cable again, just to feel safe. And we don't have to worry about this SP2 thingy. even though the software is uninstalled, you can get rid of it by
opening the registry (Start-Run-regedit) and deleting the key
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ShopAtHomeSelect
Agent'.
Manual removal
As with all software that uses Winsock2 LSPs, you should be very careful
removing ShopAtHomeSelect by hand: if you slip up you may lose all
networking ability.
First, open the registry (Start-Open-regedit) and find the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run .
Delete the 'SAHAgent' entry.
Next, deregister the LSP part of ShopAtHomeSelect. The easiest way to do
this is to use a tool such as LSPFix http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm. Tell
it to 'Remove' lsp.dll and 'Keep' the rest.
(It /is/ possible to remove LSPs by hand by editing the registry, but
it's quite a bit of effort and it's easy to make a mistake. If you want
to try anyway, run 'regedit' and find the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\Parameters\Protocol_Catalog9
. For each key in Catalog_Entries, open the 'PackedCatalogItem' value
and check if it starts with 'lsp.dll'. If it does delete that entry.
Renumber the remaining keys so that they count up from 0001 one
at a time, and set the 'Num_Catalog_Entries' value in Protocol_Catalog9
to the highest key number you have. See, I told you it was a lot of
effort.)
Next, open a DOS command prompt window (from
Start-Programs-Accessories) and enter the commands:

I think AMD have targeted only MS buffer style.. eg blaster worm etc.. Linux has good protection built in plus with the ever changing way of linux it would be hard on AMD to ensure that it is current. (no expert) Buffer over runs are quickly fixed 9/10 and usualy people upgrade their OS every release. If this is the case debian users would like a feature like this since releaces are far and few between. The main reason AMD did this is because a new install of XP within 5 minutes gets it... Also the accustics may be set to off this increases the drives performance but makes it louder. Maxtor drives I have found are verry reliable. My maxtor makes the occasonal ticking sound during high load mine is 3-4 years old. Have a look around on the net for SMART utills. Windows if you have that installed use hard drive health from www.panterasoft.com and that should give you more than enough info. Reliable? Up to a point Lord Copper. I've had two of them croak on me - one after 6 months (which I got replaced under guarantee) and the other after about 3 years. In my experience a ticking sound is an indication that the final appeal has failed and it is not long for this world. You'd better make regular backups while you still can. [newbie] Lucent Module wont autoload
I recently installed Mandrake 10 CE after trying Mandrake 9.0 and Fedora Core 1. Since installing Mandrake 10 the Lucent driver 1. doesnt autoload when I use Kppp. Before in Mandrake 9.0 and Fedora this worked beautifully. I can load the driver manually using modprobe but the strange thing is /dev/modem is linked to /dev/ttyS14. If i remove the module i.e modprobe -r lt_serial and modprobe lt_serial again it links /dev/modem to /dev/LT0 which is correct and the modem functions perfectly. I have been hunting in init.d, rc.d files..etc for some hint where this /dev/ttyS14 link is coming from...etc but no luck. Can someone please point me in the right direction as to how to get the lt_serial driver to autoload and also link to /dev/LT0 without the unload/reload of the driver.. I have already copied the appropriate lines into modprobe.conf ..etc As you said it is necessary as the Club RPM doesnt do it for you. Reading your last point out the device /dev/modem being a link to the /dev/tts/LT0 is making me think perhaps the best solution is to see if I can get kppp to point directly to /dev/tts/LT0 rather than via the link. I can recall of the top of my head if Kppp will let me do this.. When I log off ill check it out.. Ill report back.. After burning it seems it's not mounted. I tried mounting it and couldn't--unknown filesystem and none specified. It's known as cdrom2. The US Navy is in the midst of spending $6 billion dollars on migrating the entire shore-based enterprise to Windows 2000 for instance (I'm involved in that process unfortunately). But I agree that MS security really sucks. While I have to use Windows here at work (Military), I don't use it at home. I'm all Linux (Mandrake as a matter of fact) and my four servers run Mandrake linux as well. Part of the problem is that security of the enterprises (each branch has there own) is handled in a hap hazard approach because they were designed piece-meal. The military, and the rest of the federal government, as a whole is working toward correcting that problem but it's certainly not going to happen over night. But this type of hacking is not funny, particularly now when our forces are getting ready to head into harms way. [newbie] What happened to APMI Support?
I loaded up 9.1RC1 over the weekend and noticed that APMI support seems to have dissapeared. I've loaded 9.1RC on my laptop, so now when I poweroff my laptop no longer powers off. I had 2.4.20-2mdk loaded under 9.0 previously and APMI worked just fine under that Cooker kernel. Now I just upgraded my kernel to 2.4.21pre4-10mdk from the 9.1RC 2.4.21pre4-6mdk kernel. Still no APMI support. Well, if I type ping localhost, it says the network is unavailable. But, if I go into connection settings for network, it lists eth0 as having an ip address. Tis a very, very bad idea to write to your NTFS partition from Linux. It WILL hose your NTFS system. So, if you enable RW access to your Win2K partition be prepared to reload your system. NTFS access from Linux should me RO (read only). I've done it for a very long time without any problem what so ever. This of course was a grand over statement on their part, but it almost entirely relied on the work code weavers was doing for them. Once the licensing issues started to pop up and code weavers left, they had to dramatically scale back there assertions. Lindows is okay, but the thing I don't like about it, is you run under root all the time. You log in, you're root! It's as much Windows98 as you could possibly get in linux I think, but with one big exception... under windows98 you can't delete active system files while they're in use.. you can under linux. Not good for run of the mill home users. Oiyh! Anyway, Walmart also sells Mandrake and one other OS with their base-bottom prices systems.. forget which one though. At the risk of offending some, I will give my thoughts, which will probably be unpopular (dons flame-retardant suit). Yes what you had to say will probably offend some, but honestly a free-flow of ideas, expressed in a thoughtful manner such as you presented your ideas, should never offend. 1. This whole situation leaves me with an unsettled feeling. I am not comfortable with begging as a business strategy and this is the second time this year. From other comments I have seen, this is already starting to get old for many. I don't necessarily like begging either, but what makes me even more uneasy is the though that Mandrake might fold in the not too distant future, or than Mandrake 9.1 might be held up for lack of money. That is to say that a release should never go gold for purely monetary reasons, but rather when it's genuinely ready. I was strictly a Redhat user until a few months ago, when I converted to Mandrake. I absolutely hated Mandrake 8.2, but really liked 9. And now because I didn't like the path Redhat was taking I have converted my laptop and two servers to Mandrake linux and would seriously hate to see their services impacted in any way! 2. Mandrake is one of the most popular distros. See http://www.distrowatch.com/ Of all the distros listed, why does Mandrake keep begging for cash? It looks to me like they are still suffering from some _very bad_ business decisions, mostly unrelated to Linux (the repositioning as an e-learning company fiasco). Are current Mandrake users supposed to bail out the company for the sins of the previous managment? Perhapsif Mandrake is to prosper (which is different from survival). Well unfortunately we all don't seem to have much of a choice. They are in the position and it's either sink or swim, and philosophy has nothing to do with it truly. 3. It appears that current management is under tremendous pressure from their venture capital investors to become profitable so their investments will pay off. I am not sure that it is my responsibility to contribute to this. It would probably help us all to understand this a bit better to know exactly what is drawing down revenue still. Contracts? Would just be nice to know. 4. I use Mandrake, like it, and have purchased boxed sets. I wish them well and hope they develop a viable business plan, but frankly, begging is an embarrassment to the entire community. M$ must laughing its ass off. Well I also purchased, or rather ordered a boxed set of Mandrake 9 months ago, but never received it and despite many contacts, both by phone and via email I never found out what happened to my order, until I received an email from one of their marketing people. I vented on her and my email quickly got passed to someone up their marketing chain who promised to cancel my order and refund my credit card... which still hasn't been done after quite some time. Recent emails to the person who personally promised me they would refund my credit card have gone unanswered and I finally wrote a letter to my credit card issuer refuting the charges. They're now looking into it and can handle this for me. Despite Mandrake's money problems, they blew this whole roll out in a major fashion. I think too few people are talking about their problems getting the software they purchased and it's that experience, in my mind which causes me to now be a little more careful about how I give them my money. I'll wait from now on until the boxed sets are on store shelves before I purchase. At least that way I can guarantee I get what I paid for! 5. If Mandrake dies the torch will be picked up by others and the Linux community will survive. Those who support Mandrake now will move to another distro and help it become stronger. The future of Linux is bright, but there will be shakeouts along the way. Remember, that which does not kill us makes us stronger. Will Mandrake still be standing at the end of the day? I don't know, but the Linux community will be stronger. Honestly I think that's terrible, and reeks too much of scavenging. Mandrake has produced a great product but got itself in a bind by bad business decisions, unrelated to their product. For them to fail based on unrelated business matters would be a terrible waste of time and effort. The object should be to make this thrive and succeed. [newbie] Weird Cron job problem
I've got a problem with a cron job that just seems so weird to me. It has to do with fnews, which I loaded up yesterday... if I run '/usr/local/bin/fnews -f /root/news/fnewsgroups' from the terminal everything runs just fine fnews pulls my injects and passes them to my mailing list. You can't import .pst files directly from outlook to Evolution, but if you export your .pst files to mbox format first, you can then import them into Evolution. If there is a problem with your new kernel and it will not boot then you are screwed since you have no other kernel with which you can boot. If on the other hand you have installed your new kernel using -ivh then your old kernel still exist and is still bootable. Using -ivh for all kernel installs is standard practice. You have been lucky thus far but luck is fickle and has a bad habit of changing, mine usually from bad to worse. (-: Ahh, got it, but I usually keep a boot disk around also. You bet and I tried a few. I had just deleted debian (too much bother at this stage in my life) they worked fine then. In mandrake 8 all was fine. I am seeing a picture of a lock on the icons and also on the contents on the inserted cd of the one drive that doesn't have the lock I have the same problem, but turning off supermount clears it up for me. su, then supermount disable should enable you to manually mount the disks and get to the content. I forgot to mention the video card is an ATI Radeon Mobility LY (AGP). I've tried the generic Radeon driver, the Radeon Mobility driver, and the Radeon Mobility what_ever_it_is driver. I've run a search in google for Mandrake and radeon mobility ly and came up with only one hit that was close to my problem, but it was in regards to Mandrake 8.2 with an older kernel. There suggestion was to upgrade the kernel, well this is a newer kernel, similiar problem. I wish there was a search engine on the list archives but I have been looking through the past few months of posts... I just don't see anything else close to my problem. Hi Jason, Welcome - The bad news is that 32 MB is probably too little for what you have in mind using Mdk 9. I had an old Dell with 64 MB - I eventually had to add 128 MB to make a fist of the hardware. Then it went along fine - on mdk 8.2 and now 9.0. (it chokes on Windows 98, NT and XP) . The processor will be OK but plenty of RAM really is needed - especially if you want (as I expect) a graphical User Interface. You could settle for a command line , but I doubt if that is what you really need right now. Best, AH. [newbie] interlink versapoint rf wireless keyboard
Has anyone gotten this wireless keyboard/mouse to work correctly under linux? The basestation interfaces through usb. I turned on bios support for usb keyboards. The keyboard works fine until linux starts to boot... I get a kernel message that states the device (vend/prod 0x46d/0xc00e) doesn't have an associated driver. I've gotten a corded usb keyboard and mouse to work, but this thing is being stubborn. I'm running a cleanly (freshly) installed 8.2. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Actually, that device number is associated with a corded usb mouse I had hooked up. Disregard that. I tried this wireless keyboard on my Mac OSX machine and it worked. [newbie] Open Source Code (follow-up)
Thanks to all who sent their response to my question. I have another question, I think this is a ridiculous question, but I have nothing to do but to ask this question just to know, I know that if we compile a program like an assembly program, it will make another file excluding the source code, its either an .exe file or a .com file, depending on the structure of the program, or in c programming, when we compile a program, I know that it will make an exe file.
