I'm not sure, but I think there might be way do that during boot up in

Might be worth a try before re-installing

Re: [newbie] Hostility Levels on the list

That can be the other way around as well. In the past I have used my
computer for many things other than the internet. In fact this list has
led me to spend more time on the internet, because I am learning how to
use my computer for reasons that are not neccesarily internet related.
When I do use the internet (other than this list) it is only for short
periods of time, to retrieve some data. I studied COBOL and RPG, when I
had only a foggy idea of what the Super Information Highway (as we
called it back then) was and before I had ever touched a PC.(remember
coding sheets?)Some youger people may not realize that there were
computers before the internet and they were (and still are) very useful,
even without the internet.I have been using Linux for about three years
now and consider myself a seasoned newbie. However, when it comes to
internet and email topics I am just scatcthing the surface and I need to
have even the basics explained before I get a grasp on what is being
discussed.LAN networking is completely over my head. Using Linux and
following this list has taught me more about the underlying processes of
the internet and everything else, than DOS or Winduhs ever did, including
how Winduhs works. It seems we have a vast variety of levels and areas of
expertise on the list and I celebrate that. The more variety, the more
opportunities for learning.

Re: [newbie] Installing/Running Ximian

You would definitely notice some difference, if Ximian were installed.
For one thing, when you login the first time there is a setup screen.
Until Ximian, I was still just flirting with GNOME and flipping back and
forth from KDE. Now I haven't used KDE at all in over a week. I did the
automatic install from the Ximian site and it went smooth. Took 9 hours,
but was well worth the wait.

Use Nautilus to draw the desktop means that Nautilus will manage what is

It's this particular one I'm having the problem with. libc5-1.0-2.i386.rpm. I used it
once in the past and it worked fine. I even had saved it on a zip disk, but my zip
drive died. I downloaded it from Caldera's site and did the same thing I did last
time, but this time it didn't work. I get a error message. If I unpack it from
software manager, it tells me it is already installed, which I don't think it could
possibly be. I have re-installed 8.0 since the time it worked and besides that WP8
will not install, as it did the last time. The only libraries on my system that I am
aware of, would be what comes stock with 8.0. If I unpack it from Package manager, it
does nothing. No big deal though, the main reason I wanted it was to print envelopes,
because I was having trouble getting Star Office to print them right. I have since
figured out what I was doing wrong there, so this was actually a blessing. I learned
something new in the process. Now there is no hurry to get WP to work so, if I do it's
just iceing on the cake. Thanx for your concern, not only on this, but on the info
about GNOME you gave me in the past. I am now running Ximian exclusively and not
having any major problems. I am also planning to get the powerpack when 8.1 is
released, so I'll probably wait until then to *monkey with it any more.

To install WP on either 8.0 or 8.1 you need to install 2 additional
pkgs.
libc-5.3.12-35mdk
ld.so-1.9.11-4mdk
Both are Cooker pkg but the easiest way to find them is using
www.rpmfind.net

libc will now install with no conflicts.
When you install ld.so set it to upgrade and Replace both files and pkgs.

I am using WP on both an 8.0 Ximian system and a system with 8.1 Beta3.

[newbie] OT?

2001-09-14 Per discussione Charles A. Punch

I have refrained from posting OT since Dennis HAVLIK posted about
kicking people off the list. However, that was not the only one reason.
The other is that I have had arguments in the past about posting OT, and
I see some of the same people who flamed me about my opinion are now
posting OT themselves, because this is not just another OT, this is
different. This topic about the nation's tragedy is something that most
people can't seem to ignore. Someone posted calling for a show of hands.
I vote to allow OT. Someone else inquired if everyone had stopped
because of Dennis HAVLIK's post. With all due respect to Mr. HAVLIK, the
main reason I have refrained recently, is out of respect to those who
feel so strongly against posting OT, that they have gone somewhat off
the deep end emotionally and resorted to name calling. I don't want to
be responsible for driving someone to that extreme. We have enough of a
problem. The purpose of discussing the tragedy, is to try to work
through it, not to create more of a problem. Unity is more important
than my piddling freedom of speech. I offer an invitation to anyone
who wants to discuss this, or anything else off list, until this is
cleared up ( and I'll try to actually post off list this time). I have a
great deal of respect for everyone on this list, even those whom I have
had differences with in the past. At the same time I don't wan to stick
a gig in someone who is already hurting emotionally.

everything will be allright. It goes much deeper than that. If we keep
letting the people who are responsible hide behind ethnicity and
political systems, we have truly allowed them to decieve us. The sad
thing about American politics, is that it is more concerned with what is
politically correct, than what is just. Still, I think that this is the
best country compared to others (not because of the government). Maybe
that's just homegrown predjudice. I think that people need to stop
looking to the corrupt political systems for answers to these problems
and concentrate on promoting social consciousness and morality. That
goes for all countries. If not, the world will continue these
witch-hunts looking for a scapegoat, while the guilty ones laugh at us
from behind the veil.

I lost my backward compatability rpm. It's the one that makes Word

If anyone can direct me to the rpm, I would be very grateful. Thanx in

The mailing list has set up a reply-to: header so hitting reply will stick

The easiest solution, IMO, is to reply all then remove the ML's address for

[newbie] Re: Subject changed by request of previous poster

2001-08-29 Per discussione Charles A. Punch

 LURKER here,

These two subjects are NOT what I would call appropoe for this Mail
List. ONE, slamming others is NOT very NICE even though you may have
thingys correct or NOT. TWO, the subject is NOT correct for what is placed
in each message. I do thank you for responding but if the subject is
changed then change what is in that field, SUBJECT:.

I have a few questions. First of all, let me say that I do not mean to
*slam* anyone. I am only trying to figure out the standard procedure for
this list. There is much diversity in place of a standard going around,
not only on this list, but in the world in general. This is one of the
factors that led me to use Linux. Although it is far from standardized,
it seems that the Linux community is at least making an honest effort to
define and set some standards. Sometimes this means hearing the groans
of growing pains. I think that is what is happening on this list. I have
heard a few people *demand that everyone follow their standard, but I
have yet to hear very much in the way of credentials, or an explanation
why. Several times I have asked *why* and gotten cursed out. A few
people have *tried* to ridicule me, but were not successful (in my
understanding), because they quite simply, didn't make any sense to me.
Perhaps their insult was over my head, but they should have taken into
consideration that this is a *newbie* list. I have also gotten replies
insinuating that I had been insulting. I usually post in the same tone
that the previous post was in. However, I will not resort to calling
names, posting with lots of CAPS or ad hominem, no matter what. I am now
verbally walking on eggshells, so as not to offend anyone. My questions
are just questions. If I ask a question it means that I want to know
something. There is no hidden agenda. These are just some things I
thought were worth considering, in the interest of communicating more
effectively. Maybe I've got it all wrong. If so, it would be nice to
hear someone explain it to me in rational terms.
---
These types of
messages should be addressed directly to the individuals you are wanting to
communicate this information NOT to the LIST.

This is what gives this LIST a BLACK EYE in PROFESSIONALISM.
-
I have asked this before, but gotten no reasonable explanation. What has
this list got to do with professionalism? This is not a rhetorical
question! I really want to know.
---
 Most of the
info asked for is received with the intent of assisting.
--
Assisting what? Is it strictly for addressing technical issues? I have
heard many contradictory opinions on that one lately. If so what
constitutes a technical issue?
--
 If you want to
have this type of discussion then create your own Mail List for that and
let those of us that want to learn our systems to the best of our abilities
 to this List.
-
By what authority do you declare this? again I am not trying to be coy,
but seriously, why should I listen to your denmands as opposed to all
the others who say just the opposite? I can't follow two directly
opposite paths. The best I can do is listen to all sides and choose the
most logical one. If anyone wants people to follow their instructions,
perhaps it would be in their interest to present their case more
clearly.

Re: [newbie] KDE and Gnome when I log in?

2001-08-27 Per discussione Charles A. Punch

I know that there is probably a better way to do this, but I, (in
desperation) got rid of those bad boys, by slapping them with Xkill
everytime they showed up. It took five or six times, but eventually they
stopped coming up, so far. If there is a better way to do this that will
not leave a lot of unfinished cleanup (as this probably did) I would
like to know also.

had one, but couldn't get it to work either. Had a Canon BJC 2110 that
worked. Had to use a 610 and up setting on that one. Gave the 5000 away
and got a HP Deskjet 632C for about 60 bucks and it prints better (as
far as print quality) than either one of the others. Its a little
particular about settings though. I've had a few problems getting it to
print on the right position on the page and it sometinmes chews up my
envelopes. Now that I've gotten used to it's idiosycracies, I like it
better, because of the print quality. It seems you have gotten futher
than I did with the settings on the BJC 5000. I couldn't even get it to
intialize. Good luck.

Are you sure you have the right Graphic Card selected. On my Toshiba

After much fiddling around with the resolution, I finally resolved it by
changing the Graphic card to the first entry on Tatung. All of the
Generic settings worked fine during install, but then after booting
would flicker unless I changed the resolution to 256 colors. I was not
happy with 256 Colors, so I kept experimenting until I stumbled on the
right setting. Now it does not even flicker on 65 thousand colors. In
7.1 I changed it in Harddrake, but in 8.0 it's easier to use

That's really odd. I've been using GNOME as my primary desktop for

This kind of statement is one of the things that scares off potential Linux users. I
switched over to Linux, because Windows crashed on me and would not re-install
correctly on my laptop. In desperation I installed LM 71, which I had played around
with, but was afraid of, because of statements like the one above or, Linux is not
user friendly It installed without a hitch and I managed to get my mailing list done
on time. It was easier to install than Windows, contrary to popular belief. I have
not looked back since. I use Win98 now only because I have not figured out how to
install my scanner correctly, but I have had trouble with peripherals in windows as
well. My zip drive gave me a real hard time to install in Windows, but LM recognized
it with no problem. I didn't have to do anything. I didn't install a driver or
anything, it just worked after install.

It sounds like the above user would have trouble with any operating system, but it
would fall under the category of a non sequitor to assume that he would have any more

because it is easier to install and use than Windows. No defragmenting or cleaning up
the registry every five minutes like in Windows, less crashes from opening too many
programs at once and finally less chance of getting a virus. Okay, so some software

was allright, but since I have a Win modem, I couldn't connect. 7.1 reads my
Win modem without a hitch (I am writing this from my 465 CDX running LM 7.1).
I didn't do anything special, I just set up a DNS with ELN/ and it worked
from the get go. 7.2 however, would not read it. It seems that some people
like 7.2 better, but I went back to 7.1, for more than one reason. The Modem
was just one of them. I had problems with 7.2 on both my 465 CDX and on my
Gateway desktop, so I'm not sure if it is system specific or if it is
something I am doing wrong. Neither one of my boxes are even close to what
could be considered Linux compatible hardware, so it's amazing that it will
run at all on them. Even if it is something I am doing wrong, 7.1 is a safer
option. 7.2 is pretty, but I want something fuctional. It's a shame though,

My impression is that the Linux community in general cannot decide whether
linux should be seen as a viable desktop alternative to Windows and MAC, or
a viable backend alternative to Solaris, or simply as a hobbyist OS. (To me
the former is very debatable, the laters are more realistic.)

I think that linux will never be a viable desktop for the masses until
productivity software is as common as it is for Windows (but then, i guess,
linux programmers would have to contend with the "dumb windows user"
mentality). I know that a couple of months ago the Linux Journal had a
multi-media issue that showed how linux could be used for generating music
and movies, and while interesting, it's not even comparable to the
multimedia power of the MAC and BeOS. (I can't open any application without
 XMMS "coughing" on me)

To me it seems that despite all linux advances it is still _just_ an
inexpensive internet sever (web, mail, news, etc..), and a hobbyist OS for
developers. I think a lot of the reason why is the elitism that Linux folks
have and distain for the "dumb windows user." What's needed is a real
paradigm shift within the community. Yeah, we have token companies like
Gnome and Eazel that genuinely care and are compassionate about the computer
food-chain, but this isn't enough. (What's up with this in-fighting between
 KDE and Gnome?)

Then again, maybe the fate of linux is never to become a computer for the
common user, but rather a development environment for programmers and web
developers. We seem very divided on this issue.

One last thing, I'm not complaining really, it just that I think there are
different priorities that drive linux compared to the other OSs.
Consequently, there are opportunity costs and trade-offs. The thing that
really bothers me is the elitism.

I agree. That's been one of the problems I have with linux. When I
hand a linux disk to one of my Windows using friends to try, I tell them
that the minimum workstation GUI install will take about 1.5 gigabytes.
Everyone gives me the "Huh". Why? Because Windoze 98, with office and

something like a "Minimal GUI Install" that includes KDE office, One
text editor, one file manager, etc. Everything should be available, but
face it--for these newbies it's not necessary. Once they find out that
they really like using linux, then they have room to experiment. My Mom
does not need 5 different terminals or 6 window managers, and she will
never have any use for developmental tools.

Just another 2 cents from a newbie; I use Linux because IT WORKS! The first PC
I ever used was plain Vanilla DOS. Back then we carved our own windows and
climbed in and out of them the hard way, with a little help from our friends.
The Linux community seems to have that same spirit. I have been using Windows
for a few years, but have never liked it. LM was the answer to my problem. I
think that LM could be an alternative to Windows, not by making it more "user
friendly," but by getting more productivity software to run efficiently on it,
without having to be a programmer to install it. That doesn't mean to make it
"for idiots." Can't we find a happy medium? User friendly, to me just means
"limited." I would like to see LM become less like MS, not more! LM 7.2 was a
big dissapointment to me. I went back to 7.1, which is the best OS I have ever
used. I hope that the next distribution will have all the bugs out of it,

Go to real.com, follow the links to get RealPlayer Basic. When you get
to the part where you select your OS, select Unix, and at that point
you should automatically be taken to a page that has the appropriate
 i386 RPM.

I already tried that. The problem is that after I select UNIX, there is
no Mandrake 7.0 in the selections on the next page. There are 2 Redhats
and a few others that I am not familiar with. I am a newbie and have only
had experience with Open Linux, Mandrake 6.2 and Mandrake 7.0. I tried
one of the Red Hat selections, but when I try to install, either as
upgrade or new install, I get an error message; conflicts with ( such and
such) existing file. Ialso tried one of the selections with an rpm
extension and it did the same thing. A version of RealPlayer came with
Mandrake 7.0, but it is expired. Forget the MTV, I want my RealPlayer.
One of the selections on the RealPlayer page may indeed work, but I am
afraid to do too much experimenting because, I am very inexperienced
especially at installing from anything but kpackage or rpmdake.
