[newbie] tar again

2002-11-02 Per discussione root
ok I tried to run the command to a tar file mldonkey in particular and I got
this error. It makes no sense to me

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

this is the name of the tar file exactly that I'm trying to do
mldonkey-2.00.shared.i586-Linux.tar.bz2.tar

 Alan:
The first thing to do is to find out exactly what modem you have. Linux
drivers have been written for some Lucent chipsets, but others are
not going to work. The best way to ID your modem is to open up the box and
look at the modem. Note the FCC number, and any part numbers that are on
the Lucent or whatever chip. You can go to www.fcc.gov.oet/fccid/ and
determine the manufacturer and model number. Your next stop should be
www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. Part way down the page, click on the
Download Entire Table link and run a search for the FCC number. If that
doesn't work, try searching for Lucent. You'll also find links to other
information about Lucent-based modems on the first page.
 Good luck,

[newbie] console application in terminal

2002-05-20 Per discussione root

Hi !

I check incoming mail and files with F-prot for Linux, which allows a very
selective action.

I made a desktop link to the application and added the necessary options. I
made it run in a terminal. Mandrake version 8.2 is used...

My problem is the terminal disappears (closes ?) as soon as the scanning is
ended. I have to provide a log file to see what happened ... It would be
much easier if I simply could keep the terminal screen ...

Anyone seeing a solution (option to add ...?) ?

Thanks !

failed login. I have more if we need them:

Jul 28 06:55:34 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-4

Jul 28 06:57:03 localhost last message repeated 3 times

On a successful login, localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
binfmt- is repeated only two times, then I get the same messge for a
collection of sound-* modules. The can't find char-major-* message repeat
the same number of times regardless of whether the login works or doesn't.
Meanwhile, I am successful in logging in via console mode if I do a 'restart
in console mode'.

Incidentally, the failed login has gone from the previous exception to the
rule, to where I have to make multiple attempts, including powering down, to
get signed in.

I did reinstall my printer last night, and fixed my halt problem per someone
else's documentation here. I assume the now it is safe to turn off your
computer is a windoze specific message, since I never see that. I get to a
message saying that the system is stopped after what seem to be all the
shutdown messages complete ok.

[newbie] login problem

2001-07-26 Per discussione root

running mandrake 8.0

on occasions following what is currently an undectable pattern, I get to the
login window where i would enter root or my user name and password, enter the
uid and password correctly, the system thinks for awhile and bounces me back
to the same login window.

I have to reboot under those circumstances, sometimes several times,
sometimes powering off entirely and waiting for bios to clear, before the
system accepts my uid and password.

I'm careful to comfirm that I have entered the password correctly, and caps
lock is off. The password is simple enough that mistyping multiple times is
not a likely explanation.

I've never had a situation where one (root or user) accepts but the other
doesn't.

login is set to start kde. I do not get to the kde loading panel before the
bounce occurs.

ideas?

Whenever I try to access either of my CD drives, whether as root or

Using Konqueror, I get the message: "Unableto enter file:/mnt/cdrom. You
do not have access rights to this location." - if root doesn't have

padlocks on them.

Using a terminal command: ls /mnt/cdrom, I get the message "Input/output

The only way I have ever been able to get round it is to boot from a

If anyone has encountered and solved this problem, I would be grateful

I am running Mandrake 7.2 (never had this problem with 7.1) and my

[newbie] Can't Access CD Drives - even as root

2001-03-13 Per discussione root

Here's a funny thing!

Whenever I try to access either of my CD drives, whether as root or
user, I am refused access.

Using Konqueror, I get the message: "Unableto enter file:/mnt/cdrom. You
do not have access rights to this location." - if root doesn't have
access, who does? My CD drives are shown under /mnt with little
padlocks on them.

Using a terminal command: ls /mnt/cdrom, I get the message "Input/output
error".

The only way I have ever been able to get round it is to boot from a

Very true indeed. Kde should build a special mouse driver for mice that

And the people who make the mice should write software for linux also.
  After
all there are a lot of people using linux today.

I feel that if every one using linux sent email to the logitech company

drivers for linux. And the Z52 has drivers for linux also.

My mouse is a ms intelli mouse explorer and whith the software for

can get the buttons to do what ever I want them to do, and I can change

I also feel that linux should have surport for IDE CD Burners, not just

Re: [newbie] Why use linux at all? - not heresy, just want a straight answer please

2000-12-30 Per discussione root

Hello,

I don't blame linux for not having drivers or surport for my hard ware.
I believe that the company that makes the device should do this not
mandrake or any other distro. Like you said M$ put the companies on the
spot and they should not be aloud to do this. If only our politations
would do the right thing and look after the people. My video card has
linux drivers on the cd. But I did not need them as mandrake 7.1 worked
first time with no problems at all. I have three distros and am playing
around with them to see which one I like.

Why use linux cause windoze costs heaps and crashes heaps.

I am going to learn linux even if it kills me. I am having fun trying
to upgrade kde 1.x to kde 2.01 I have all the files on cd for suse 7 but
now the fun begins how do I use them. I did try kpackage but it won't
look at the rpm files, I think it might be me not knowing how to use
it, but I'm not complaining about this as this is part of the learning
curve. And having a lot of fun learning.

Leaving out Win2k, you're right as far as you go. WinX.x - Win ME
is a GUI that runs on top of DOS. The combination can be just as
effective for many users, as using KDE or Gnome (and other GUI's) on
Linux. The caveats are the same with either GUI/OS, including Win2k.
The user must take reponsibility for learning and maintaining both his
hardware and software. For most Windoze users this is actually easier
than for most Linux users. Usually revolves around keeping the
Registry cleaned and optimized using native DOS tools that come with
Windoze. EG, scanreg /fix and scanreg /opt run from a pure DOS
environment, no Win GUI overhead active or present (ie, NOT an F8 on
boot). Most all Windoze users don't/don't know how to do this. There's
 similar situations with GUI/Linux users.

The main problems for M$ users is the binary only, closed source,
proprietary nature of the device drivers, many of which aren't M$
certified, and the system problems and security issues they introduce.
But guess what, this is also becoming a similar situation and large
problem for the GUI/Linux community. Actually, it has been for some
 time now.

M$'s real disservice is not the quality of their software, but the
influence they exert on hardware manufacturers. The result has caused a
quick deteriration in the quality and capability of available hardware.
'Specially from the manufacturers and venders most often pressed the
hardest by M$, the big ready mades (Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc.). It
also is extended upon high volume specialty manufactures (motherboards,
modems, video/ sound cards, etc.) This deterioration is also a large
problem for Linux users, particularly the ones that blame problems they
experience on the distro they just failed to install/setup. Those that
say "but it works fine with Windows", or complain when they have to d/l
binary drivers for their new video card, and blame Mandrake for not
providing them when they can't get 'em working properly.

   Oh, well... another of my hardware, user reponsibility rants ;

Stop right where you are!! Don't hose anything--it's not that hard, I dual
boot NT and W2K with Linux on lots of defferent boxes. From your
description, it looks like LILO may be installed exactly where it should
be--hdb5. My experience has been that NT/W2K doesn't like to boot from LILO,
so you'll need to use the NT bootloader to boot and choose your operating
systems. So, once you have your system booting W2K perform the following
 steps:

Do everything in Linux as root

 1. Boot Linux with your boot disk

 2. Mount your floppy drive (its probably already mounted, but just in case
 it's not the command is #mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

 3. Put a DOS formatted floppy in the drive and type:

 dd if=/dev/hdb5 bs=512 count=1 of=/mnt/floppy/boot.Lnx

Remember, if LILO ain't on hdb5, you'll have to change the command to
reflect where it actually is. What you did is copy LILO to a DOS floppy and
 named the LILO file"boot.Lnx"

4.Close Linux and reboot into W2K

Now you need to write the floppy's boot.Lnx to the W2K "boot.ini"

 5. Open Explorer and copy the boot.Lnx file to the root of your W2K drive

 6. Using Notepad, open the "boot.ini" and add the line
   c:\boot.Lnx="Mandrake 7.2 "
to the end of the file

This is what mine looks like:

 [boot loader]
 timeout=10
 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
 [operating systems]
 multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINNT="Microsoft 2000 Professional" /fa
 c:\boot.Lnx="Mandrake 7.2"

 7. Right click on "My Computer", click on "properties"--this brings up the
System Properties window. Click on the "Advanced" tab and the "Startup and
Recovery" button at the bottom. If the first check box is unchecked put a
check in it and then set the number of seconds to display before booting into
 the Default OS.

 8. With no floppies in the drive, reboot and you should see your operating
 system choices.

For anyone using WINNT, you might have to write your boot.ini file, because
your's may be blank. Then at step #6 you'll need to drop to an MSDOS prompt
 and type:
  C:attrib -s -r boot.ini

Then write your boot.ini file and reset your attributes by typing:
C:attrib +r +s boot.ini

Hi Andrew.

I'm running Seti@Home myself. In order to run the X version (graphics)
to work, you need the following command line:

./setiathome -graphics ./xsetiathome

The -graphics option tells the setiathome prog to send it's output in a
format readable by the xsetiathome bit.

I also run a text-only version in another directory, i.e, two copies at
once, although the x client can only see one at a time.

Incidentally, have you tried look@seti - this enables you to see
multiple instances simultaneously - even if they are on remote
machines. There is even an option to view a skymap showing the area
that your signals came from!

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the link, I have already put it on my
web page because it's an excellent site that I refer to every once and a
while. I'm slowly collecting good Linux web links and hope to put up a good
Linux page on my site when I get some more time.

Unfortunately people have been working on the
elusive Winmodem to Linux drivers for quite some time and since Winmodems
aren't real modems, I think I'm still going to go support a company such as
Diamond or Viking that made 'real' (external/Linmodem) modems and make them
look nice. It could be some time before a driver is finished and all of the
  bugs are worked out.

Evan,

 I
identified my win as a Lucent(DSP) and from a link on the below site found
that there are several manufactures that are writing drivers for
Linux. Lucent Tech. is one of them. Suggest not buying another
modem until you look into
Linmodem.com.

[newbie] Re: Linux Modem Drivers

2000-04-27 Per discussione Bob Root

Thank you for your response. I wish to encourage your company to develope
Linux drivers. I use other products, developed by Lucent, and am well
satisfied with their performance.

Unfortunately, Lucent does not yet have a Linux driver. The drivers
available are freeware drivers, which are not developed nor supported by
Lucent. We are not sure when our driver will be available.

 Thank you.

[newbie] Still unable to invoke modem.

2000-04-26 Per discussione Bob Root

 Where
would be a good place to begin to determine problem and make the necessary
correction to modem set up. I am able to invoke Drakcomp, but do not seem
to run the set up properly.
 System is
a Gateway 500p, 4.2gig. purchased 60 days ago. Howtos, man, available, but
I must be overlooking something.
 Do I
rerun setup, from the cd, again, or just attempt to
upgrade.

 I have
Linux Mandrake 7.02 on a separate HD, hdb.

 Another
problem is that Linux seems to take 4 or 5 minutes to start, from the boot
disk.

 Thanks in
advance.

Just talked to the tech at

installs winmodems on their systems.

As I have to replace current
modem can anyone recommend a good one? Thanks

Is there a rpm or program
that is a work around for the winmodem

 I'm installing LM 7.0 via
ftp install and all goes well until the installer tries to
retrieve mdkinst_stage2.gz - I always get the error message:
"Unable to retrieve the second stage ramdisk: Bad server
response". Can someone enlighten me as to what I am doing
wrong? I have tried every combination that makes sense to
me wrt the ftp site name and Mandrake directory location.

I wish, I bought a new IBM Aptiva and it has a
Winmodem too :-(
You could take a peak at this wonderfull page
here

http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

it lists most modems and if they are compatable
with Linux or not. I'm currently looking on the online auction eBay to see
if I can find a good cheap one.

Hope that helps,

[newbie] basic sound, floppy and CDROM problems

2000-04-24 Per discussione root

Hi,

just installed 7.0 from the CD that comes with the Sams "teach yourself
mandrake in 24 hours". The install went pretty well- partitioned my drive,
picked up my network card, zip drive (i think!), network config worked first
time, IDed all the available memory - everything seems fine so far except the
three basic things - sound. floppy drive and CDROM drive
My sound card was correctly identified, but any sounds come out as tones - no
bells, roars, crashing windows - just flat tones. The card is an SB Live!.
Neither the floppy nor the CDROM drive will mount - any attempt comes back with
the error msg like (for the floppy) "mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block
device"
Help ! I would really like to find out what is happening here.

Thanks,
philomena

Re: [newbie] Internal ATAPI Zip drive

2000-04-22 Per discussione root

Martin;

To mount your internal zip drive; 1st - open a terminal window; 2nd - change to
directory "/mnt"; 3rd - make a directory for it (I used "zip"); 4th - now mount
it.
i.e.

cd /
cd /mnt
md zip
cd /
mount t- vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip

The "sda4" in "/dev" maybe different on your machine. Check the
"/var/log/dmesg" file to see what your system thinks it is. Also note that you
cannot eject your zip disk until you umount the zip drive.

Hope this helps;
Bruce :-)

 Hi!

Just having spent a couple of days installing and configuring Mandrake, I find
that I can access all my drives *except* my internal ATAPI Zip drive. Can
someone please tell me if it's possible to access it and if so, how?

 Martin

[newbie] hda/hdb

2000-04-18 Per discussione Bob Root

Attempting to install Mandrake 7.02 on a Gateway 500p, Linux will have it's
own HD(B). The conflict is that while attempting to install partitions the
boot finds HD(A) and locks up, which is as it should be, I think.

How do I correctly direct the setup to find HD(B) and ignore the (A)?

Using the partition program, Disk Druid.

Okay, I can't print in beautiful, beautiful, 1200 dpi color anymore, and I
can't make money with my cad program anymore. I've already reformatted my
entire hard drive for Linux and kissed them all goodbye. See? I was really
committed to this!

I knew you could load Mandrake from windows and partition for Linux, but
my question is, now that Linux is my only OS, can I repartition and load
Windows on that? Is there an order of operations I'm violating that Linux
doesn't like? (Linux devotees - please don't hate me-I can't afford to buy
another decent CAD program right now, and it's extra income)

 Thanks!
