Robin I'm sorry, but on this matter I must disagree completely with you, Robin ! On my box I have Star Office installed in my /opt/office52 directory. Doing this is easy : become root, go to the CD (or ftp-site), change directory to linux, cd to office52, cd to program. Verify the presence of the file setup. Now, issue the command : ./setup /net (or ./setup -net) depending on the distro. This will install the whole kidoodle once and for all. Remove the install-media. Then become a normal user. Go to the directory where you installed SO, and -once again- find the setup file. Run it (this time without the ./ things) and it will install about 1.5 MB in this users home directory. Repeat the procedure for every user on the system. Done and ready to use ! HTH Kaj Haulrich Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I am using jre1.1.8 (it's my java runtime env. for Moneydance). StarOffice5.2 wouldn't recognize the jre executible. you need the jdk for development, the jre should work for running java applets from the browser. You might need to tweak the javarc file that SO uses for any particular version to work. -- Alex (Go easy on me, I'm a COBOL programmer in real life)

I chose the developers option during install, so I would assume that it would be installed for me if it's there...I tried to install StarOffice, but it could not find an environment to run in (couldn't find a java env.). I will probably want to write java applets at some point: I don't just want this for StarOffice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have the Deluxe version, you could install the Sun JDK from the commercial applications disk. I think that is one of the apps that is included in the Deluxe version, but not the Complete version. If you don't have it you can download a version that will work from www.blackdown.org. If you have installed Java and StarOffice it did not find it during the install. You will need to edit the ~/Office52/user/config/javarc file. Just remove the offending version from the "ExcludeVersion" line. Then restart StarOffice and select bookmarks - Java - Java Setup and then pick the install. -- Alex (Go easy on me, I'm a COBOL programmer in real life)
Re: [newbie] Network StarOffice Install
When I downloaded the StarOffice 5.2 from Sun, the download was named "so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin". When I executed this, the installation was a local installation. I have several users of the workstation. The StarOffice instructions were to run "Setup /net" from the CD-Rom for a network installation, then install from there for each user. According to this method, each user should add only 2 megs. My problem, is I have one executable only, and do not have "Setup /net" in my download. I've had lots of good help, many suggested: "so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net", or "so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin -net" However, I open my CD-Rom, click to open up a Terminal Window, I can enter the "LS" command, and see the above file. When I type either of those two commands, the reply is "no such command". I even try the above command without the /net, or -net, and still get "no such command". Am I missing something simple? Thanks in advance. Try prefixing the file with ./ e.g, ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin -net That should work... Regards, Ozz.
Re: [newbie] Network StarOffice Install
as far as I know the /net switch only works for staroffice 5.1. 5.2 has a completely different installation scheme. Re: [newbie] where's staroffice
Are you trying to download it is one huge file or as several small files? I had the same problem until I downloaded it in pieces. If this doesn't work, try a mirror.aarnet.edu site. They all have it listed.
