RE: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation
I read quite a lot and while at home, in my opinion, nothing beats the NLS player, with its good sound, long-lasting battery, although the battery life, that begins at 40 hours, slowly degrades to about 16 with prolonged use. The Iphone of course, is also excellent for listening to BARD books, but with so many other apps on the Iphone and now with unlimited data, plus texting and the telephone itself, I prefer to also take the Milestone 312 for the books. The problem is that we are slowly becoming pack horses, when you take into consideration that when travelling, I normally take my Iphone, Milestone, Olympus, ORCAM, laptop and CPap machine. Everything could be improved of course. The NLS players could solve the battery-life issue plus add Bluetooth capability; the Milestone could add Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an antenna for the FM radio, for now it uses the wire of the headphones as antenna; the ORCAM should be able to save the text it scans, etc. Regards, Humberto -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Hamit Campos Sent: Thursday, May 4, 2017 7:33 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> Subject: Re: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation Cool. I am amazed that during this long discussion nobody has mentioned the Milestone, that Swiss machine with great speaker sound that also plays NLS books and is much smaller than the VRS. I've got two external hard drives ... one is my main one, the other is for backing everything up in case of loss/damage to the first one. I've previously used SyncToy to do this and it's worked very well but it's recently started failing to make deletions, regardless of which folder I label as the left and which I label as the right and no matter whether I run a synchronization (copying both ways) or echo (left-to-right only). So, does anyone please have any idea as to what the problem might be and how it might be fixed? In fact, does anyone even know if SyncToy is still being used/maintained? Alternatively, can anyone please recommend a suitable alternative for a Windows 7 laptop running Jaws 14.0? Many thanks in advance for any help. You could try Dragon Natural Speaking, a program designed primarily to give the computer oral instructions or to dictate text, but you could play an audio file into it, probably with fair results. I would have sent this request to the Goldwave list, of which I am a member, but have lost their email address. But this enquiry is also very much a PC Audio question and I'm sure there are members who could put me straight. I recorded my local quire using my Zoom and ended up with a large WAV file. I know how to chop it up into tracks using GW, but, and I need to be honest here, I was rather drunk when I was recording the concert and sitting too closely to my tripod, so this lovely recording is runed by the loud shouting and clapping from a drunk and I want to cut, me, out! I've got a copy of John Wilsons book concerning goldwave editing commands and what it says is place a left bracket at the start of the offending piece of recording and then a right bracket, at the end of it and then simply press the delete key and the offensive material should be deleted. Problem is when I do this I delete all of the file completely. I cannot find the left or right bracket keys on my keyboard, but I have found the left and right perin keys. Are they not the same thing guys or am I missing something? Any advice with this one would be fantastic as I really did mess up much of the recording with my enthusiasm and apart from my audio presence, the recording turned out rather very nice. Very best wishes. Andy. >From Scotland with Love.

The problem I am having is even after setting a scheduled session for recording a particular program, TR will record for a few minutes, maybe 20 or 30, and though the recording is continuing, at least it appears that way, the audio simply stops being input to the potential recorded product. RE: a helping hand in starting up..or working on an internet radio station?
Hello Randy: To start up a radio station is not that difficult, most people use either Shoutcast or Icecast as the software generating the stream. You would choose whether to contract a streaming service or do it yourself in your own dedicated or PVS server. To be a DJ with pre-recorded talk programs is the easiest and most flexible way. To make them live is much more demanding, has to be done at exact times and the quality depends then not only of your server, but also of your internet connection and transmission to the server. Being an actual DJ, that is presenting music programs, has the difficulty of having to pay royalties, something that on Jan 1, 2016 became much more expensive, prohibitive for amateur enthusiasts. I have run an internet radio station for years that has become very successful with presenters from 24 countries and listeners from 108 countries, but is all in Spanish, it is called http://radiogeneral.com and soon, I will be starting another one totally in English and consisting entirely of pre-recorded talk shows or Old Time Radio programs, that will be called "Radio Broadcast Training Service of the US" whose domain will be www.rbts.us and if you are interested in doing a weekly pre-recorded talk show, get in touch with me. You would have to record it, edit the audio and upload it to the server using FTP. If anyone on the list is interested in doing a weekly pre-recorded talk show in Spanish for Radio General, please contact me also. It does not matter if your Spanish isn't perfect, is accented or grammatically flawed, as long as it is understandable and pleasing to the ear, it is fine. RE: imbed shoutcast audio on to a website?
What I sent you before was a simplification of my code, without attributes to the audio tag. If you want it to play automatically, you must include autostart, if you want a menu to play and stop, put controls also as an attribute to the audio label, if you want more controls you can use Java Script. Here is my actual audio tag: The important thing was in the src because Shoutcast does not recognize it as a stream unless it has a semicolon at the end of the URL. RE: alternitave radio automation packages?
Shoutcast and Icecast are free, the VPS server would depend on what you want, there are many choices. You would get the server first, must be a VPS or Dedicated server, so you can have root access and install either Shoutcast or Icecast. Prices depend on whether it is Unix or Windows, speed, size disk, etc. Humberto -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of stewartross Sent: Saturday, September 26, 2015 9:02 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: alternitave radio automation packages? hi how much does the shoutcast host and the auto d j cost where do u get it from from the ross meister www.laserhothits.co.uk - Original Message - From: "Humberto Rodriguez" <s...@hrfinancial.com> To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> Sent: Friday, September 25, 2015 10:32 PM Subject: RE: alternitave radio automation packages? > Yes Hank, it is exactly an Auto DJ setup, transmitting 24/7 from the > server, > pre-recorded programs instead of songs. > > Humberto > > Humberto Rodriguez > Fort White, Florida > http://radiogeneral.com > http://eiberoamerica.com > > > -Original Message- > From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Hank > Smith, and seeing-eye dog Iona > Sent: Friday, September 25, 2015 1:01 PM > To: PC Audio Discussion List > Subject: Re: alternitave radio automation packages? > > Hello > what do you have playing when you are not live? > is it like a auto dj set up? > Hank > > > On 9/25/2015 5:54 AM, Humberto Rodriguez wrote: >> Hello Hank: >> >> I also used Station Playlist Studio years ago, but haven't for years. RE: Audio podcasting
Hello Walter: A podcast (a contraction of Ipod and broadcast) is an audio file that by definition is provided as an RSS feed, so it may be accessed by podcatchers; there is one of those available free from the UK by Alistair King, in the webbie.org.uk website. To play a podcast online, from the server, you must either use Flash Player or the new label provided by HTML5; controls for the former abound, some with fast-key controls, controls for the latter can similarly be provided, I think the AFB provides such a player free. I would think it best that an organization such as you describe would use its own domain and host its own podcast; it is something that although has a learning curve, is not that hard. I would also suggest that you make it available for download as well a to listen online, in addition, of course, to the RSS feed that does just that. I'll try and make this request as simple as possible but it is about a subject I know nothing about so if I display some ignorance then I ask your tolerance. I'm involved with a government funded project that is based around helping disabled people to understand the services that are on offer to help them decide for themselves the level of independence they can handle and the level of help they need and how to get the funding to accomplish this. For those in the UK this deals with the SDss service (Self Directed Support Scotland). The guy in charge would like to provide audio recordings of varying aspects of this service but the problem is where to host them so they are accessible to all. He sent me a link to www.soundcloud.com to check it out for accessibility and when I played the music tracks that were there I as a blind person could not access the other play controls as the music drowned out the screen reader. These controls did not have any keyboard shortcuts so were impossible to hear until the music ended. This would be fine for those who can see a screen but not for those who can't. Does anybody know of a service, some host where these files can be posted and can be accessed by all and that the play controls can be accessed by keyboard commands? Free services would be preferred but at this point anything is of interest. If anyone can help with a place to place these audio podcasts then I'd be grateful for your help. RE: alternitave radio automation packages?
Hello Hank: No, I don't use Centova Cast either, I create my playlists directly in Shoutcast 2. I installed Shoutcast 2, but you could use Icecast 2 instead if you prefer, actually there is a version of that called Icecast KH that allows you to stream in AACP and be reproduced by Flash Player. What I did was to set up a VPS and installed Shoutcast, then wrote some PHP scripts, but you do not actually need scripts, what you need is to read up on the structer of the streamer software, be it Shoutcast or Icecast, upload the audio files to the appropiate folder for each playlist and create the calendar file that the server needs to run each playlist at a certain time, with the backup of the list called "rotatio" to play when another playlist is not playing, before the next scheduled one begins. There is a learning curve, you have to read a lot about either Shoutcast or Icecast, but once you master it, you can run your station from pre-recorded files as I do. You would still need Station Playlist Studio if you or one of your presenters wants to do a live program. RE: station program accessibility
I don't know or have never used that software; I have used http://stationplaylist.com that is mostly accessible and there exist Jaws scripts for it that make it even more so. It is automation software that can transmit live to a server, if that is what you want to do. As far as streaming servers themselves, Shoutcast and Icecast are the most popular. The most popular interface for both is Centova Cast, but it is not very accessible at all. Most of our programs are recorded, although not exclusively so, we have a few live. Since Centova Cast is not accessible and I am a totally blind user of Jaws, I had to write my own interface to Shoutcast V2 in PHP, so I am able to handle automation myself without problems. It depends on what you want to do; if most of your programs are live, probably Station Playlist Studio is your best choice. Since I don't like to have to depend on my DSL connection to the server and then the server to the world, I prefer to keep my programs in the server and use AutoDj for almost all of it. My station is in Spanish, but you can listen by going to http://radiogeneral.com to see how it sounds. In a little over a year-and-a-half, we have achieved much, have been listened or visited from 113 different countries. We have long passed the 12-hour-a-day programation and are close to fill 24 hours a day with unique programation. Can any of you recommend a good plug n play usb soundcard that would work with the blue yeti usb mic, winamp 5.666, and windows 8.1? For anyone who has ever used multiple soundcards in an audio project involving talking to someone on skype, while broadcasting music over the web, do you know if external usb soundcards have a setting, something like an audition channel of sorts, that would allow you to take skype calls without broadcasting them online? If technology permits, I'm hoping to be able to play music over the air, and take requests via skype off the air. I hope that makes at least a little sense. I'm new to broadcasting online, so my question may sound a little confusing to some people. Thanks in advance for any help. Mike Rochester, NY.

Don't know what else to tell you, except that in my Dell's IDT sound card on Windows 7, I can go to my System Tray, Speakers/Headphones, (usually the last item there) and I can assign which soundcard I want Jaws and other sounds to come through individually. RE: using tapin to record from other sites
The URL or web address of the website is not the URL of the stream. For example, our internet radio station (in Spanish) is located at http://radiogeneral.com while the address of the stream is http://radiogeneral.com:8000 and, more frequently than not, people who don't have a streaming server of their own, but contract a streaming service, will show an IP address, such as http://72.123.45.67:8122 and notice also that the port number, which normally defaults to 8000, could be any number other than those already asigned to other tasks, normally any number over 1000 and that the number may be followed by a slash and a mount point. Well, the Adobe Flash, MaPlEr and ShoutOff are all in English, while http://radiogeneral.com transmits 24/7 in Spanish, so I imagine it is to the radio station you are referring to when you proclaim your lack of knowledge of the Spanish language. No, RadioGeneral.com is an international project of Spanish-speaking mostly blind people of some 25 countries, who present over 100 programs weekly to thousands of listeners of so far, 104 different countries. It is something I started about a year ago and has grown rapidly. I have, actually have had for a while, plans for a similar online radio station in English, but have not yet started it due to lack of volunteers willing to dedicate long hours of altruistic labor for the pure pleasure of doing radio. I do not pay royalty fees, nor emit music programs unless we have the permission of the composer and performer or just the performer, if public domain. Almost all our programs are unique, programs where people want to share their passion or expertise, or come from OTR. RE: Balabolka
Hello Sunshine: Try doing this: When it asks you the file name to save, give it a full path, for example: C:\filename.mp3 Or better yet, create a folder inside c:\ for the files, for example: C:\tts And then when saving a file, type: C:\tts\filename.mp3 That is what I do and it works fine. Of course, you must have previously selected to save in MP3, the bit rate and sampling. RE: Balabolka
Well Sunshine, I am not sure I understand what you wrote, but it seems to me that you did what I said and it worked, then you did it again with larger text and it worked again, but then for some reason something else did not work when you tried to convert text to MP3. There are always many possibilities for something to throw a wrench into the works when you are dealing with computers. You must be patient and eliminate possibilities one by one. If you are able to convert small files to MP3 but not larger ones, try using a lower bit rate. Keep in mind that bit and sampler rates go together, for example, you cannot save something at 56K bit and 44100 sampler rates. Above all, if we are to try to help you, you must take care of being very explicit when asking questions, about the detailed steps you have taken, as well as the result and error messages. RE: re text to mp3
There is nothing strange about that, Lame is free to the private user, but it cannot be distributed with free audio software, only the ones you pay for include it. I keep a copy of Lame always available for these cases, if you do not have it, just look for it in Google, it is free to download and use. When you convert text to MP3 with this or any other free software, it will ask you for the location of Lame unless, as Sunshine pointed out, you previously copy the files to its folder. Sunshine is also right about its speed, it is slower than for instance, Balabolka, but I don't think that is a major concern, accuracy is much more important and time will tell how accurate it is. RE: re text to mp3
Hmmm, the difference in size is considerable and puzzling. It would be nice to have a help file in plain text, since there is no help menu that I can find. As far as the Lame files, just look for lame.exe in Google and you will be able to download it free, then either copy the .exe and .dll to the program's folder or simply try to convert some text to MP3 and it will ask you for the location of Lame. Yes, you can indeed use all the SAPI voices installed in your computer, I tried it with a Loquendo voice and an ATT voice. The Lame folder you download from the internet, uncompress and save to your hard drive; the first time you try to convert text to MP3, the program will ask you for its location; you enter the full path to lame.exe and that's all, the program will do the rest. The most important thing for me is that on my sony I can use the up and down to go back and forth by album and left and right by track. RE: first post: best mp3 player for a totaly blind user
Yes, I do have a Milestone 312, what I like best is its size, very small, but yet with good sound and also that it plays US Library of Congress NLS BARD books. It has a 15-hour battery, 1 GB internal memory and it takes an SD card of up to 32 GB. Pretty good recording and text-to-speech capabilities. It has no wi-fi and thus no internet radio, but it has AM-FM radio. RE: Thank God for SONGR
Hi Larry: Way too much praise for just telling you about SONGR, though the program is truly excellent. It is my pleasure to help other blind people and as a matter of fact, though I am a blind veteran myself, the VA in Northern Florida contracts me to teach other blind beterans to use adaptive technology, a very rewarding activity. SONGR is not only a great tool for downloading from Youtube, but you can use the search field to locate audio files in many other sights too. You could for instance, search for John Kennedy or JFK and I am sure you will find many audio files by and about him as well. RE: Station Playlist, was, Looking for Info on meeting Accessible Internet Broadcasting Needs
Hello Larry: SPL works on hourly playlists which you may create by hand or whose automation you may achieve using another software they offer called Creator. You can include spots, time whether, etc and you can use quick keys to insert short messages, such as station or program identification, etc. You could talk over whatever is playing by merely pressing a key. If you do your program live to a few stations, you can encode the signal and stream it to the servers simultaneously, while at the same time, you record what you are transmitting. If you merely want to record your program and edit the audio, adding to it everything else you need, it is an overkill. In that case you could record with any number of programs, like Total Recorder, Soundforge, Gold Wave, Audacity, or digital recorders, later edit it with another large number of programs, such as Total Recorder, Soundforge, Gold Wave or Audacity, and finally, upload it to as many stations you want, using FTP or SFTP. I didn't see a lot of software description by the developers themselves, but maybe I was looking in the wrong place. Since I will be recording a show and delivering it to subscribing Internet stations in a yet to be determined format, how would station playlist benefit me. I'm sure it would, as I've seen it mentioned here before. If you are going to do it live to a few radio stations, I suggest using Station Playlist Studio; if you are going to prerecord programs, I suggest using Gold Wave; both are very accessible with JAWS. After recording and editing them, you would normally use an FTP, or mos likely an SFTP program to upload it to each station; for that I suggest Win SCP. RE: PHP and Shoutcast
Hello John: Just as another John already answered you, a DSL connection is not enough to broadcast from home to many listeners. I have 768 kb upload speed and is not enough. Similarly, many services that offer streaming overload their systems with the result of periodic fading of the signal at peak hours, so you must either contract a reputable streaming service or set up your own in a VPS or dedicated server. As far as software, the two major ones are Shoutcast and Icecast, they are both free; to manage the streaming server, unless you write your own software, there are likewise two major options: Centova Cast and WHMSonic, neither one is free. As far as tutorials, you may find some at www.centova.com and www.shoutcast.com but the best I found is at www.mushroomfm.com. However, there is a lot to learn, you will need to go to Google and do some research as problems present themselves. I am using Shoutcast 2 in my VPS and trying to script my way to handle it without Centova or WHMSonic, a complex task for which I have found little help. Hello everyone. My name is Gary Price from Bolton in lancashire, United Kingdom. I have recently started doing a series of podcasts on a free Windows programme called SpeakOn. Now the thing is I had to do these on my iPhone using Dropvox so it would pick up both my voice and computer speech. However its been pointed out on a website I'm on TAFN (The Accessible Friends Network) that my computer's speech is extremely quiet! I want to do an update to my 3 that I've already done. Please what can I do so that I can record both me and the computer? I want to do it in little bits you see, so as I say something I want to demonstraight it. Now I'm completely blind, and because of where we are extremely iseluated. So I don't have any sighted people to help me out with cable connections and stuff like that. Many thanks, any responses really appreciated. -- Gary Price E-mail and Facebook: gazwpr...@gmail.com Skype/MSN: gazwpr...@googlemail.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/gazwprice To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
RE: Winamp?
It is not free, but nearly so, costs only about $10 when buying through Paypal; it is called MaPlEr and you can find it at www.mar-dy.com where Marco and Andy, two German blind developers have it, as well as a game called Mississippi. It is great not only to play files of many formats, but also to create and manage playlists, rip tracks and convert audio, listen to radio streams and record them, many, many more features, all accesible, at least with Jaws. I have two Windows 7 sixty four bit computers and I'm thinking about putting Winamp on them because for playing CD's etc. it is a bit easier to manage than iTunes 11 and Windows Media Player with Jaws 14 and Magic 12. However, I thought before I loaded it I would ask if anyone knows of a free yet accessible Winamp type program that is better than Winamp for Windows 7 64 bit machines. Let me make myself clear, I am asking for a free and accessible music player for the computer similar to Winamp not a CRACK or a hardware MP3 player such as I have on my iPhone. I have tried other online converters, but they seem to crash IE9. The Youtube video to audio converters I have tried without success include listentoyoutube.com, and videotomp3.com. I am wondering if anyone has discovered a Youtube to audio converter that is equal or near equal to Youtube-mp3.org. I discovered while researching what was behind this sudden and strange development I was curious as to why Google is playing waterboy for ASCAP. However, I have subsequently concluded that Google has its own turf to protect, and it is the ring tone revenues they are likely receiving from the Android apps markets. IN any event, I would appreciate any suggestions. RE: Keystroke to jump back to the first song in a song list being played in Windows Media Player12
Hello Prateek: I cannot tell you the answer you want, because I do not use WMP for that, but I can tell you that it is very easy to do, as well as to use the arrow keys to go forward or backward fast and easily in a playlist of any length , as the one created when you play a folder from Windows Explorer, when you use MaPlEr instead of WMP. I use Win 7 Pro 64 bit and JFW 14. Using JFW 14, Win7, WMP12 I right click on a folder full of many mp3 songs and select 'play with WMP' in for WMP to start all the songs in that folder one after the next. CTRL b moves back one song at a time. Is there any keystroke to jump back to the first song in the list after WMP is say half way down playing my list? I want WMP12 to resume play again from the beginning of the said song list without having to close WMP and restart from scratch. RE: Can't stream
Hello Londa: It is hard to figure out what the problem could be without playing with it and I have never used the SPL encoder, I use Odcast or Edcast stand-alone. The first thing that comes to mind is to verify that the encoder connects and the second, that the bitrate at which you are transmitting does not exceed that allowed by the server. I presume of course, that the encoder is set up for Shoutcast, as you say that is the type of server you use, but you need to also make sure you have activated the Lame encoder, if transmitting MP3 files. We are now trying to replace the main computer. For now, this computer handles the automation and the streaming although we may change that in the future. We're using Station Playlist Creator, Studio and Streamer. We are also using the SPL encoder. It looks like the stream is going through everything until it hits the Shoutcast server. When we bring up the stream, we see that it's running, but we don't hear any sound. Can anyone help? I know more details are probably needed, and I'll be happy to provide them. also, we wanted to use barix boxes, but one of our partners refuses to participate, so we can't go that route.
