RE: Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9 Lens Focusing
Hi Steve and all Vivitar users, yes it's normal and due to the floating element. IIRC, the rear element is the floating one. If you turn the focus ring, you can see that from a specific point, the rear element is moving ( or was it the front element ?). As it gets hold in normal position by springs, you have to apply the extra force from the specific point of focussing to stretch this springs. As I openend some time ago my sample, I know a little bit more than one can see from the outside. Bernd H. Steve Larson wrote: Normal. The elusive K 35mm f3.5
I have been casually looking out for a SMC 35/3.5 in K-mount for months, and have not seen hide nor hair of it. I bought one in M42, and have seen 3 others for really decent prices. But in K-mount this thing must be fairly rare. Same story for the SMC 85/1.8. I just bought one of those in M42 as well. I was intending to start assembling a K-mount kit, but it would appear I'm getting pretty entrenched in the screw mount stuff. Oh well, long live Spotmatics I guess. On a related issue (I have still boxes of 120 E-6 in the freezer and they came out perfectly even after quite old), I was told it's paramount to shoot and process freezed film as soon as possible after getting it out of the fridge (with E-6 pro film which has been already aged in the factory). Re: Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9 Lens Focusing
Hello Bernd! Now that makes perfect sense. I think you`re right that the rear element floats, because my K-mount specimen had a loose filter ring on it, Dean (my repairman) took it apart and told me to hold the front element group while he tightened some screws, and I don`t remember him fighting any springs in the process. The nice thing about this list-you`ll get to the bottom of it, no matter what. Hi Frank.I have two choices in my area, one is the Rapid Photo at Markville Mall and the other is Accent Photo 14th Ave and Woodbine(Aaron being the third):) I usually take it to Accent over Rapid as the latter does not do 120 film or E-6,so if i have a roll of each i can do it at one place instead of 2-3 places. OT: HIE bad scrathes
Just wondering if this has happened to anyone on the list. Received my latest 2 IR rolls back Tuesday. The second roll(last shot)was all scratched, and badly, like a cat sharpened its claws on the negs. This was a roll i had winding troubles with from frame one. I really had to pull hard on the wind crank and weird noises were made. When i got to about frome 25 or so it would not advance,i rewound a few turns then cranked forward, same thing, very stiff and would stop at the same spots. I finally gave up and rewound but it would not rewind fully so i unloaded in the dark and put it in the can. Just wondering if the can could have been bad.I looked at the interior of the camera(S3)and all looks fine. The HIE roll in it now winds fine. Any one have similar problems. BTW there are 2-3 on the roll that i hope to save in PS they are nice errie images. The listed weight difference is a bit less than 300 g (255g). This is without batteries though; the MZ-S uses those little toy ones and the F100 uses AA. With batteries the difference is more. Unless, of course, you don't like little toy batteries, and you get the battery grip for the MZ-S. The the size, weight and cost of the two cameras even up. I still think that comparing the two cameras is an apples ond oranges situation: they are two very different cameras for different types of users. Re: APS Film
John, My guess is that digital is killing APS off much faster than it is killing off 35mm. I believe that the biggest benefit to the smaller format is size of body and lens. So you can get a fairly compact camera that produces reasonable PS pictures. Some of the digital models are equally small and have the digital benefits (no film cost, instant feedback). Both of my daughters have an APS camera and love them because of the small size. They are willing to take them many places that they just wouldn't bother with an SLR. They are very willing to compromise the image quality for the convenience. I believe the future is grim for APS. As demand goes down, the prices for film and developing will rise and then digital will seem like a no brainer. John, It will probably end up like disc, 110, and other formats. I, too, have used APS. I have used the N Pronea APS SLR. It hase autofocus (of course) and uses interchangeable lenses, albeit only zooms. I was very impressed with the photos got with the camera but at the same time wouldn't dream of owning this camera. Looks like it's been discontinued already so I doubt other makes will soon be turning out APS SLR's. There's just very little market for them. However, for someone like my wife's cousin who owns the camera, it's a nice introduction to manual focusing (you can switch between man/auto), fill flash, and experimenting with composition at different focal lengths. She loves that camera, so for her it's a really good fit. It's a step up from point and shoots and more user-friendly than a true SLR. -Brendan - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. The best way for tropical processing is to cool the chemistry to processing temperature in a refrigerator and use a water bath to keep the temperature constant during processing. Re[6]: What is the most quiet body?
dick, That is exactly what the original poster said was important. That is why the whole discussion occurred. The MZ-S was ruled out in favor of the PZ-1p because of high drive speed. Then I said that Pentax is not strong in this venue. The PZ-1p has winder speed but single sensor AF and the MZ-S has slow winder speed. No pentax glass has the equivalent of USM motors in the lenses, which helps with speed on big glass. Since the poster was going to buy body and lenses for it, I suggested he look to other brands also as they might meet his needs better. Re: Agfa RSX II
Hi, Bill. In my experience, the RSX II 50 will behave differently when processed by different labs. From two labs here in Oslo, I have received images with a noticeable magenta cast which was not at all nice. However, I have also found a lab that do a decent job on this film. Last winter I tried it side by side with a Provia 100f on ice motifs. Ice is an ideal subject for testing colour casts. Both films were developed by the lab I knew to produce decent results with Agfa. Compared to the provia, the Agfa produced a slight magenta cast. The provia, however, produced a slight cyan cast. Don't think I would have noticed either without doing the comparison, but there it was. I also noticed that the RSX II is slightly more grainy than is Provia 100, and less contrasty. However, the RSX seem to have a half to one stop more latitude than the Provia. In my shots, this was noticeable in the highlights. In the ice there were more shades of white with the Agfa. Did my test with a Pentax 645 and A-120/4 macro on tripod. Exposure times were ca. 1-4 seconds. Typically, shots like these are taken through a very strong filter (typically an optical density of 5 or so, corresponding to a filter factor of ~100,000). To make things interesting, photographers sometimes take an additional exposure (on the same frame) without a filter, when the Sun is not in the field of view. Not sure if there was the typical late afternoon fog coming in off the ocean that day or not. If there was, then the exposure of the water and bridge was probably taken in the late afternoon, well before the start of the eclipse. Re: media philosophy debate
There is no paradox. Although it's impractical to fully record any event as experienced (sight, sound, smell, temperature, cultural connections, emotional connections, etc.), an acceptable approximation would be a video or film record (with stereo binaural sound) made with a movie camera (digital or film) with a field of view matching the angle of view of your eyes (disregarding the binocular/stereo vision aspect). To match the experience of looking around to see the scene in its entirety, the camera would be attached to your head or, with a small videocam (lipstick camera), attached to your eyeglass frames. If it ran continuously during the event, and wasn't large or weird-looking enough to distract bystanders, you'd have a fair record of the event. If the camera was light enough and quiet enough, it wouldn't intrude on your reality. Photography, however, is quite different, in that it captures an instant selection of part of the scene, possibly with a visual or temporal perspective unavailable to naked human eyes, and reproduces that selection on a piece of paper or film, possibly with altered or reduced (bw) colors. It may even be a scene that only existed in the photographer's mind, his inner reality. A photograph is not reality, just as a statue of a person is not a person, nor is a painting of a person. Photography is a skill, an art, and a craft, and very enjoyable, which is why we're all here. Pat White - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Eclipse Photo
You'll notice that the actual image of the sun is completely blown. So no filter needed if you don't mind that. As far as eye protection, you could easily compose the photo by shielding the sun with your hand in front of the lens. It also appears to be a fairly wide angle lens. So if you did get a peak of the sun it would not be much if any worse than if you did so without a lens. I probably would hesitate to do so with the 400mm however! Re: Eclipse Photo
Well, Since the apparent motion of the sun is constant, all the photographer had to do was take a picture every X minuites. He took 18 frames (counting the number of suns in the picture), and the eclipse in San Fransiscio took T time. All he had to do to find X is simple math: T/18 = X Calculating exposure must have been tough though . . . he had to decide what the exposure should be, then divide it up so that all 18 exposures equalled the final exposure he needed. Re[2]: Eclipse Photo
Hi, I read up on this stuff before the total eclipse of 1999 in Pasachoff's book, and although I didn't get any decent photos of my own I did learn a few things. The book includes examples similar to this one. The moon and the sun move at reasonably constant speeds relative to the earth, so we know how long it takes for the sun to travel its own diameter. It's also quite easy to work out the how much of the frame the sun will occupy for a given focal length. Since the start and end times of the eclipse are predictable, this information allows you to calculate when to start shooting, and how long the interval between exposures needs to be. It also lets you plan in advance roughly whereabouts in the frame the line of suns will be. That Vivitar, as has been stated here before, boasted the highest resolution score in Popular Photography's tests for many years. I agree with Mishka entirely on this one. I have several quotes from Nikon users who say the Vivitar/Kiron 105 macro is as sharp as the Nikon; one sold his Nikon, seeing no point in keeping it. In a blind comparison, I doubt the Pentax would consistently be picked over the third-party macros as the winner. But then, I sold my SMC 28/2K and kept my Vivitar 28/1.9; sold my Pentax 50/1.4A and 50/1.2A and kept my Rikenon 50/2. For a photographer like me, who shoots primarily at ISO 400 and higher, ultimate sharpness isn't everything; I'll take sharp enough + great color (Vivitar 28/1.9) or fidelity (Rikenon, which happens to be sharper than the Pentaxes from f/2 to f/4.5). Re: 100mm 2.8 Macro vs. 100mm 2.8
Little bit of a cheap shot here. I'm with Mishka. A Vivitar or Tokina is going to give you just as good results as the Pentax. The feel might be different but the end result is not. The vivitar Series One, Tokina ATX and the Kiron 105mm macros were all excellent lenses in their day and they still are today. Macro lenses are so good that most films don't do them justice. Guys, I love Pentax lenses too but there are plenty of other lenses that are just as good - some even better. Theses other lenses just don't hold their value the way the big name camera lenses do so they are always a better deal, unless you want to sell them. When the Digital Ixus came out I bought that because I loved the size and the design of it. I have since sold the APS Ixus (while I could still get some money for it!) The appeal of the small size of the APS cameras is there, it has just been superceded by digital. Once the digital Ixus came out, I had no more need for the APS as they both served the same purpose. My feeling is that a lot of other people will be thinking the same. I really do agree with this (laitm). The APS target market is the same one that is attracted to digital, and for that market, digital is more appealing than film. I give APS 5 years at most, until all industry support for it ceases. Re: 100mm 2.8 Macro vs. 100mm 2.8
I'm with you Paul. I have both the Pentax 100mm F4 macro and the Tokina ATX 90 F2.5. Both are excellent lenses but the Tokina gets more use primarily for its speed. Vic In a message dated 6/12/02 9:18:29 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Actually, the Tokina AT-X 90/2.5 is the same as the Vivitar 90/2.5 Macro (1:2). - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 100mm 2.8 Macro vs. 100mm 2.8
Bob: I think there are lots of reasons photographers gravitate to one or two lenses. It's not necessarily that the lens is better than the other lenses in their arsenal, it's often because they feel comfortable with that lens. A 100 F2.8 is a great lens whether it's a macro or not. I'll bet you like its feel, it's speed and the sharpness of the pictures keep you coming back to it. In a message dated 6/12/02 9:25:40 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Mishka, I agree about the resolution. You can't tell much over the internet. Still, I was surprised at how many of my PUG shots were with the macro. I believe that I chose these photos because the slides were special. They were exceptionally sharp, and drew my attention. ...And some of us bought this lens a long time ago, close to your price. Regards, Bob S. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 12, 2002 8:52 PM Subject: Re: 100mm 2.8 Macro vs. 100mm 2.8 Little bit of a cheap shot here. Vic Hell Vic, take a few more cheap shots!! Thats OK. The end result is different. The bokeh of the A 100mm f/2.8 is friggin amazing. I had one of those Vivitar 90mm f/2.5 macro lenses that went 1:1 with no extenders. Reputed to be a fine lens. I thought it was, to. Problem was, it had sucky bokeh. So much for art!!. Add to that the feel of the Pentax lens and the A 100mm f/2.8 macro is unbeatable. BTW, Photodo has proven themselves time and again to have worse that useless lens tests. They fall into the sky is pink, I read it on the internet category. 165 Leaf Shutter lens
Just got back from shooting a family portrait. Outdoors in somewhat shady surroundings. I debated between the 90 or 165 leaf shutter so I could do some fill flash. I ended up using only the 165 for 5 rolls (50 frames). I can say that after working some with the 90 and now the 165, that the 165 design is much more foolproof. Having the shutter stay closed after the shot is a surefire reminder to cock the leaf for the next frame. On the 90, I tend to forget once in awhile. Also, sometimes my thumb hits the U/S switch on the bottom of the lens, causing it not to fire when I press the shutter release. Much more fiddley. I'm hoping things turn out well with it. Agfa Portrait 160
I just got back some rolls shot at my daughter's 8th grade graduation. All in all, I shot 1 roll of Kodak Portra 800, 2 rolls of Agfa Portrait 160, 1 roll of Fuji NHG II and one 220 roll of Konica Portrait 160. I shot this variety due to changing light conditions and wanting to test the Agfa and Konica portrait films. I was somewhat surprised to see that the Agfa portrait roll shot indoors with flash showed major shine on all faces. No blown out highlights, more like shiny makeup that really showed up. One shot had a guy in it that had no makeup on and he still had some shiny areas. I have been shooting lots of Kodak Portra and some Fuji portrait films and have not really seen this. The outdoor fillflash Agfa looked fine, just this indoor roll where flash was the main light looked bad. Has anyone else heard of or experienced this with Agfa Portrait before? I still have a couple of rolls to test with. Bruce - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions.
