What happens if Pentax releases a new SLR during this year? Will you

Seriously, I may be interested in one of these. I assume the price to

What do you think of the 400, Wayne? I just got one but I can't give it

I'm in much the same situation as you there. The easiest thing you can
do is to ask the company to define "pro" (don't ask us, we can't decide).

I'd love to start selling big framed prints but since I haven't even
finished organising last years slides, that dream's a long way off yet...

No. If you're caught you won't get insurance.

With my insurance company I had to insure my gear in my household
contents. They would not allow me to create a separate policy just for
my photographic equipment.

I had to upgrade to the "premier" policy to get replacement value cover.
Anything worth more than NZ$2,000 has to be specifically declared, so I
had to get some written replacement-value quotes from the camera shop. A
lot of my gear is not replaceable so it was quoted with the nearest-
equivalent new product, eg FA300/4.5 for A*300/4, MZ-S for Z-1p. Despite
the replacement gear being newer I still couldn't bear to think of losing
my old manual focus lenses.

When I insured my gear early this year, my policy was out of date anwyay.
Even though the total insured value more than doubled, plus upgrading to
a better policy, it only costs me a few dollars more per month. And I
now have a little more peace-of-mind.

FS Friday: For Your Consideration Prior to E*ay

2002-07-11 Thread David Chang-Sang

As mentioned earlier.. here goes nothing :(

FS:
K1000 body - in KEH EX to EX+ condition - small mark on external top of
prism BUT other than that everything is bang on and in perf condition. Also
has all the little do-dads that cover up the sync connectors and comes with
body cap. Asking $80 US plus shipping or decent fair offer :)

SMC-M 135mm f3.5 - Yep.. it's the same one that everyone raves about on Stan
Halpin's site. Comes in KEH EX+ to LN- condition with both caps.. I'll be
kicking myself for letting it go.. but now that I have the 35-105 zoom the
135 seems a bit too close for comfort to the 105 top end. Asking $60 US
plus shipping. Nothing below $50.

SMC-M 28 f2.8 - Ya... it's not "as good" as say the f3.5 that everyone talks
about but it's 28mm.. what more do you want ? :) Ok.. it's fast too..
there.. and clean.. and in the same KEH EX+ condition but with a wee bit of
brassing on it. Asking $65 US plus shipping. Nothing below $55 s'il vous
plait :)

(yes yes.. I know.. it's not on topic here BUT) Leica CL with 40mm f2
Summicron Lens - It's in "user" condition - KEH BGN to EX condition - a fair
amount of brassing, one ding (no affect on range finder focussing), meter is
bang on, and the glass is perfect. Comes with rubber lens shade, and Hoya
filter which lives on the little lens and a Canon strap.. ya.. I know..
weird.. but hey.. that's how I got it :) Asking $525 US plus shipping

Interested ? If so, contact me off list. I should have pics if required by
tomorrow/today sometime and I plan on posting these on Ebay sunday evening
so y'all got till then ya hear ? :)

Re: KX (was: Re: Pentax MX)

2002-07-11 Thread andre

From a 1979 special number of Chasseur d'Images.

Total number of cameras surveyed: about 15,000

ModelAB C D
N*k*n f 9 78 0,7 0,37
pentax kx 10 32 0,7 1,30
N*k*n el26 24 1,8 0,63
leica all 20 129 2,4 1,10
C*n*n f113 42 2,6 0,47
pentax sp5/1000 24 111 2,9 0,53
N*k*n ft42 120 3,0 0,20
C*nt*x rts 17 16 4,2 0,20
N*k*n f213 32 4,4 1,27
K*n*c* tn3 20 50 4,5 0,17

Etc... Almost 100 models or groups of models.

A: Number of cameras returned per 100 cameras.

Note: Older cameras have more chance to have been returned more
frequently (than newer cameras). So this number does not tell us a
lot about toughness. But readers gave the number of months they have
had the camera (column B) and the number of photographs taken with
their camera. A somewhat meaningfull measure of toughness is then
possible (column C).

B: Average age of camera (months).

C: Number of returns (for service) per 100,000 clicks (rounded to .1)
Average for all cameras is 16,6 (not 11 as I reported earlier)

D: Share (%) of all cameras own by readers. If you multiply this %
by approx. 15,000, you get, for example, that 56 Nikon F and 195
Pentax KX have been considered in the survey. Models with less than
25 cameras surveyed are grouped (i.e. all leica, all topcon, all
mamiya etc.)

Global results (average number of returns per 100,000) for a few brands:

N*k*n 7
Pentax9,6
Ol*mp*s 15,8
K*n*c* 15,8
F*j*c* 15,8
AVERAGE 16,6
M*n*lt* 17,5
Pr*kt*c* 28,7

There are many comments in the text (for example, most common types
of repairs are mentionned for many models). Also average cost of
repair and average delay (not interesting as it relates to one
country and back then).

>I seriously doubt the survey's methodology. If not
>knowing numbers which they wouldn't know (number of total cameras in
>use of that particular type compared to defect ones), it's
>meaningless.

The methodology itself seems OK. If we believe that these 15000
cameras behaved in a "typical" way... but it's not a question of
believing... Is 15,000 enough? Is the margin of error too high?

RE: Equipment Insurance

2002-07-11 Thread William D. Sawyer

Stephen,

I put mine on a "Schedule" as part of my Homeowner's Policy, and it covers all risks.
I specify the value of the equipment, pay a premium based on that dollar value (about
$1.15 per $100 valuation) and if something should happen, I get reimbursed for that
dollar value. I provide the insurer with a spreadsheet of all my equipment and it's
current replacement value. Much of it was bought and can be replaced with used
equipment, so report the used value. If I want new equipment, I have to specify the
value of the new equipment, and pay a premium based on that. I pay the amateur rate,
the professional rate is about double. You have to earn a substantial portion of your
income to be considered pro, or at least hold yourself out to the public as working
for money. If you shoot for your own enjoyment, but occasionally someone is willing to
buy your efforts, you're still an amateur. Your agent should be able to provide you
with the carrier's definition of "pro" as it must be specifie!
d somewhere in the contract (policy). By necessity, insurance companies define all
terms.

One concern I have currently is how to insure my newest acquisition, an A* 600mm f5.6.
I paid $2400 used from KEH. I made certain it was covered during shipping by faxing
the "receipt" to my agent/broker as soon as the transaction was finalized. I pay a
premium based on the declared value of $2400, and if it should be broken or stolen, I
get reimbursed $2400. But it is not a lens one sees often on the used market, so I
might get the money, but not be able to replace my loss. B&H still lists this old
lens, new, for about $5800. If I want replacement value, I have to pay a premium
based on this price, not what I paid. I suspect I will advise the agent of the "new"
price, and pay the additional premium on that, for the peace of mind.

Hope this adds some clarification. Much of this I learned from John Mustarde of this
list (John, are you still out there - we haven't heard from you in quite some time.)

Sunpak makes a product called a "Basic Grip" that has a grip where you can
place a shoemount flash, a synch cord that runs from the grip to a pc
connector on the camera, and a bracket to hold a 35mm camera and grip. I
use mine with a Sunpack and Pentax shoe mount flash. Works great.

I'm digitally enabled!

2002-07-11 Thread Amita Guha

My wonderful fiance came home tonight with a Pentax Optio 230 for me!
I think the 230 was just released this past June. It's 2 megapixels.
We were looking at them online the other night. I told him I wanted a
digital camera but I didn't need more than 2 megapixels for my first
camera.

The Optio 230 has a plastic body, not metal like the other Optios, but
it feels sturdy enough to me. And the back screen flips out in case
you want to take pictures of yourself, I guess. I've taken a couple of
test shots and it works great so far.

Woo...
Sounds good...
and I've left my fridge open and the windows open all throughout the condo
to hopefully extinguish the odour by late this evening (I'm not at home now
and I'm hoping I don't have to go purchase any incense to take care of the
foul odour).

Keep your eyes peeled.. I gotta start selling some of my K mount stuff -
the K1000, the 135mm M f3.5 and the 28mm M f2.8.

Next weekend should be ok... is Aaron back yet ?

July Pug part 1

2002-07-11 Thread Jeff Post

I figured I had better start now since so many turn my eye.  Hopefully I
will find time to comment on more.  I am not ignoring the rest of the
PUG, I just ran out of time tonight.  Where a shot falls on the list
and/or category does not mean I liked it more or less then another shot.
Lack of mention does not mean I did not like it and these views are from
an individual.  No comments good or bad should be construed as an attack,
etc. etc. legalese etc.

California Adventure by Steve Larson.  Wow.  This just blows me away.  I
love the colors and the perfect reflection.

Schloss Charlottenburg by Joseph Tainter. Sharp. Crisp.  The cloud
formation adds a great intensity to the shot.

Fall Patriotism by Ray Ford.  Even without the flag this would have been
a great shot.  The flag is a bonus.  I love the contrast between the
leaves and the white fence.

Ambience by Toni Lankerd.  This shot makes want to go out to dinner at an
old cafe.  The wood bar (I hope it is wood) just extrudes warmth and
hominess.

Before Sunset by Matjaz Osojnik  My eye winces in pain from the sun.
Talk about conveying an image.  A scene that makes me want to relax.

Creels by Facit.  I think the reason I like this shot is the irony, at
least in my mind, of the traps (I am assuming they are traps) and then
the net, and then what looks like traps under (hence trapped!) the
netting.  Traps upon traps upon traps.  Not a good day to be a fish or
crab.

Boat at Old Harbor by Ed Keeney.  The condition of the boat helps convey
the long and loving use of the area.  The wooden slats give the
impression of years of waves crashing into them.

Window Hood by Daniel Loader.  To answer your question, I would not have
put someone in the window reflection.  I like it the way it is.    The
hood seems out of place on a building that has siding like that.  It
seems like someone with a creative touch came along and said ugh, we need
to soften this.

Irish Memory by Frits J. Wüthrich, (sorry, that was the best I could do
for the ü) This shot makes me think of rolling fields just out of sight.
I love the yellow flowers through the wagon wheel and the color of the
window frame.

Sturgeon River by Martin Mielke.  Trees encased in ice give off such
majesty, yet are brittle and easily broken.  You have managed to capture
the turbulence of the river and the serenity of the woods.

View from Goulding's by Ann Sanfedele.  A poignant reminder that
beautiful skylines can be found without skyscrapers.

Michigan Splendor by Ken Waller.  A great fall shot.  The brown of the
bark sets off nicely from the fall leaves.

Oak Meadow Early Spring by James Donnellan.  A nice soft shot that
appears to fade into a morning fog.

Rural Life by Satish Kumar.  The description sounds like it is a great
picture, yet I can not make it out from the size.

Comet Ikeya-Zhang by Antti-Pekka Virjonen.  Beautiful shot with out the
customary circular pattern from the stars thanks to the tracking mount.

No title by G. Fenstermacher.  Surreal.  I like it.  Enough said.

IR Pond by David J Brooks.  Another gorgeous IR shot.  I love what it
does to the trees over the boat.

Cape May Victorian by Chris Niesmertelny.  Where the other IR shots
seemed warm and inviting, this one seems very harsh in spots.  It seems
like the sun is reflecting off the house making harsh bright spots.
While I love the house itself, I would have liked to seen a warmer shot.

Rocks, Water by William Robb.  I love slow exposure water shots.  Here it
makes the path of the water very evident as it snakes through the rocks.

Any thoughts on using a metal camera strap?

The previous owner of my LX used a metal "dog chain" on the camera. The

been used very little and the rest was excellent and verified by Pentax.

Re: Question: P-TTL

2002-07-11 Thread Lawrence Kwan

All 4 of the questions have similar answers.

On Thu, 11 Jul 2002, Bojidar Dimitrov wrote:
> What does P-TTL stand for?

Not sure about the official term; one of the manual describes it as
Pre-fire flash TTL. It uses the flash pre-fires and multi-segment
metering, instead of the off-the-film TTL flash sensor to determine the
optimal exposure. So the flash output is pre-determined before the
exposure, instead of controlling the flash output during the exposure in
standard TTL. Apart from allowing the use of mult-segment metering, the
P-TTL system also makes wireless TTL flash possible.

Regarding P-TTL, Flash exposure compensation, High-speed sync and
Wireless Flash sync:
>Is it a function of the body or of the flash, or both?

Both.

>Which items support it: MZ-S, MZ-L, AF360FGZ?

Yes, only MZ-S and MZ-L/MZ-6/ZX-L support it. And it only works with
AF360FGZ.

>Does it work with, say, AF360FGZ and MZ-5n? Or MZ-S and AF500FTZ?

No and no.
For flash exposure compensation feature of AF360FGZ, no, it will not work
with other MZ/ZX series cameras. The function is only selectable when
P-TTL mode is available.

(PZ-1p's flash exposure compensation is built into the camera and will
work with any TTL flash).

I'm completely new to flash photography, so please forgive me if it's a daft

I have bought my father the original 928 which has SMC zoom lens. However,

I have an AF500FTZ and a Sunpack MZ440AF and often use flash compensation in
Manual mode of my MZ-5n. However, it seems not to work with my wife's MZ-7.
The whole idea is to manually set exposure parameters metered for ambient
light and then apply ordinary exposure compensation, which will affect only
the flash output and not the parameters. It means that the camera must allow
user to use its exposure compensation feature in Manual mode. The MZ-5n and
3 do that since they are controlled manually (by rings and switches). The
MZ-7, on the other hand, is controlled "electronically" and its exposure
compensation feature DOESN'T WORK in Manual mode. Thus, one cannot apply
"manual flash compensation" with this body and most probably with any other
one that is controlled in the same way (MZ-50, MZ-30, MZ-10 etc.).
Correct me if I'm wrong...
I wonder, however, if the flash compensation (the "real" one, NOT the one
described above) is possible with AF360FGZ and any MZ camera other than
MZ-S and MZ-6, as the flash has this feature "built-in".

Hi,

same general area, different galleries. The Dali exhibition is
permanent, as far as I know, and is in & around the old County Hall
building (I don't know if this has been renamed - everyone still calls
it County Hall I think) next to the London Eye. This is about 1km
upstream from the Hayward Gallery. The Hayward is in the neo-Brutalist
complex which includes the Queen Elizabeth Hall, National Film
Theatre, Royal Festival Hall and so on.

We tacked my stuff on to our homeowner's insurance, just like my

just another thing that we own that has a certain value, and we pay a

Equipment Insurance

2002-07-11 Thread Stephen Moore

Hello PDML --

May I get some feedback from the group on the ins and outs of
insuring one's equipment against damage and theft? (The archive
hits on the word "insurance" are mostly about shipping insurance.)

I've made some preliminary calls to agents, including the one who
handles my homeowner insurance. The first question they all ask
is, "Is it for personal or business use?" I don't know how to answer
this question truthfully.

I'm not a pro shooter, hope but never expect to be -- but if somebody
wants to buy a print, or offers me money to go shoot some event (and I
think I can handle it), I'm certainly not going to say no. Especially
with my racing stuff, when I'm at the track I tend to think of it as
shooting "on spec," and the business part -- when it happens at all --
happens after the fact. So is the best strategy simply to lie to the
agent? ;-)

The extent of coverage also varied from company to company. Worst
case was the actual price paid for the specific covered item.
The rest would pay actual cash value of a comparable item, e.g.,
if I paid KEH $200 for a used item 4 years ago, and it now goes
for $300, it should be insured for the higher amount. So what
does one do in cases where the (used) item comes available
infrequently, seldom, or rarely?

How do *you* handle your equipment insurance? Are you happy with it,
have you gotten burned, and if so, how? All feedback and advice
appreciated.

Regards,
Stephen Moore

It's normal, in fact, it's good - flash is normally TOO much blue
especially for fill flash. Most photogs use warm filter gel over the
flash head.

Check if the 283 is the earlier high voltage synch version or the
later safe version, it wouldn't matter on mechanical cameras but could
ruin your eletronic or TTL flash camera. Check with voltmeter the
flash terminals on flash. 6V or so is safe. The earlier was about 60
-200V...

This is not normal. The MZ-S has a very precise multipattern meter. If anything, it
slightly underexposes.
However, Pentax matrix metering may run into problems with certain lenses. It works
best with Pentax FA lenses since these transfer information about possible vignetting
of the lens to the camera and this info is used in exposure measurement. I had
problems with my Z-1p and two A-series lenses; the A 24/2.8 and the A 35/2.8. The 24mm
gave about 2/3 stops overexposuire when in matrix mode whereas the 35mm would yield
0.5 stop overexposure. All other A lenses worked fine but they where telephotos. I
figured out that light fall-off at the corners of the wide-angle lenses affected the
matrix metering. This may also occur with zoom lenses where the effect could vary with
focal length. Are you using non FA lenses?

This is a long lived myth. The camera manufacturers may well use thousands of images
to find an agorithm for the matrix metering but the camera does not scan through
thousands of images when it meters.

This is a misunderstanding. The matrix metering will give you closer reading to the
correct (here meant as 18% reflectance) than centerweighted metering. The difference
in the real world is that matrix metering will compensate to some extent for backlit
subjects. That's about the extent of it. Otherwise matrix metering will be equally
fooled by scenes dominated by tones far off from medium; eg. like snow.
I've checked matrix metering agains spot metering for several years now. Not once has
the matrix meter suggested a weird or unpredictable exposure.

It is absolutely normal and it is not meant to give a yellow cast on the
photographs. It is meant to reduce the colour temperature towards of too
bluish light of flash.

Re: 220 Film Questions ...

2002-07-11 Thread Collin Brendemuehl

Yes, you can load 220 in the daylight.
There's no more risk than with 120.
The only real concern I would have with 220
and doing outdoor loading is the dust/dirt issue.
You can ruin (scratch) a whole roll with a
piece of dust on the pressure plate. With 120,
the paper backing is your protection.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: 220 Film Questions ...

I'm thinking of trying 220 film with my 645. It has the obvious advantage of
doubling the number of shots per roll. And it supposedly has a flater film
plain. But can 220 film be loaded safely in daylight? (Particularly if
loaded in the shade.)

I can't drive, which cuts down the available things to photograph.
Especially when you've done your best to take a picture of everything you
can find around you of remote interest.

So, last weekend I started using my 4x5 to take macro shots of things in
the backyard. This weekend I'm going to pick up some paper and additional
chemicals, and begin doing contact prints. I think my new thing is to do a
series of contacts, mount them all together (which'll be a whole new thing
to learn and spend money on, sigh), and give them away as little, uhm what
to call them, photo essays? Maybe try and pick things I know family
members like or would like, and give them 4 4x5 contacts in a frame. That
sort of thing.

In other words, same old junk, but whole new way to look at them.

Hello,

This is a strange period of my life, where I resigned from my work after
twenty years, and now I'm trying to setup my own business. Maybe you'll
undertand I'm pretty puzzled and busy now.

Ok, this said, here are the news about the "1952-2002 - 50 years of Pentax
SLR cameras" poster.

First, for those among you which are also AOHC members, please note that all
AOHC members will receive one poster for free, shipped together with
Spotmatic magazine No.33 next August (sorry, it will be shipped folded in
envelope). Extra copies can be ordered at $2.00 each (AOHC members) or $4.00
each (non-members), plus package and postage.

However, during this year 2002 celebrating such an important anniversary,
I'll be happy to extend to all PDML members the reduced cost per poster
($2.00 each). Then non-members will pay $4.00 each poster.

I checked the cost of carton tubes and postage for shipping it worldwide
from Italy (priority mail). For the full details following the link:
http://digilander.libero.it/pentaxday/postere.htm

Unfortunately, as you can see the postage for such a large and heavy poster
is also heavy.
Some time ago, somebody thought it could better to ship a bunch to some
PDML'er in N. America for distribution there, rather than many separate
posters being airmailed from Italy. What do you think now?

RE: Vivitar 283

2002-07-11 Thread Paris, Leonard

It's normal for quite a few brands of electronic flashes. Electronic
flashes tend to be a bit too cool (blue) and a little warming is needed to
give more pleasing results, hence the slight yellow color of the flash
unit's lens.

Hi all,
I've just bought my first flash - a Vivitar 283, and as usual I have some
questions. First of all - where can I find an online manual for it?
The "light emiting thing" of this particular specimen is a bit yellowish -
is it normal, or will my color photos have a yellow cast?
Thanks in advance,

RE: Always at the ready - OT

2002-07-11 Thread Paris, Leonard

I forgot to give the specifics. I usually carry a Ricoh GR1 loaded with
Superia 400. It's a nice pocketable camera with a very sharp 28mm f/2.8
lens.

On the digital side, I have a little Fuji DX10 that gives nice, sharp 1024 X
768 pictures that print very good at 4 X 6 inches. The Fuji is close to the
same size as a GR1. I have a little, very portable, HP Photosmart 100
printer that produces great 4 X 6 prints without need of a computer.
Sometimes I carry the printer along with me, too. The only drawback is that
the printer requires a nearby electrical outlet to run it.

135/1.8s in screwmount (was: Re: Drool, screwheads!)

2002-07-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've saved the photo to compare later, for I'm off to work. I can't tell
from the angle shown. I'd be surprised if it turns out to differ from other
third-party 135/1.8s that took an 82mm filter and are commonly available on
German EBay (Porst, Revuenon, CompuStar). I still believe that the Vivitar
Series 1 135/2.3 (thogh single-coated in M42) or Soligor CD 135/2.0 or 1.8
(same lenses, different baffling) would perform better.

Re: How do you beat the blahs?

2002-07-11 Thread Cotty

For me this is very simple.

It's a bit like cooking - which I also enjoy very much, but as we all
know can be impossible to do when it really needs to get done. If I've
got the Cooking Blahs, I pick up a book of, or watch an ancient VHS tape
of a once-famous UK cook called Keith Floyd. Notorious for slurping the
vino while he threw together the most amazing delicacies, his exuberant
series of shows on the subject instantly gets the culinary juices going,
and before you can say 'moules marinieres', I'm in that kitchen like a
rat up a drainpipe.

Similarly, with the Photo Blahs, I reach for one of my books by Jeanloup
Sieff, Arnold Newman, Jane Bown, and hey presto. Especially the Jeanloup
Sieff, where I instantly get a craving to be slinking around the streets
of 1950s Paris, Gitane in mouth, Leica in hand, on my way to photograph a
nice 'bum in the sun'...

My life as a holodeck character :-)

But at least it gets the old juices flowing, and it's only by studying
the work of accomplished masters I find that I am spurred into some sort
of action.

220 Film Questions ...

2002-07-11 Thread Grigolia

I'm thinking of trying 220 film with my 645. It has the obvious advantage of
doubling the number of shots per roll. And it supposedly has a flater film
plain. But can 220 film be loaded safely in daylight? (Particularly if
loaded in the shade.)

RE: Always at the ready - OT

2002-07-11 Thread John Coyle

Like Rob Studdert, I work mainly from home, but on my daily outing to
collect the mail I will usually carry a camera - sometimes the MZ-S,
sometimes the MZ-5, just recently the newly-acquired Spotty. With the
AF cameras, I will have either the 28-105 or the 18-35 zooms attached -
with the SP, the 50/1.4 (which is BTW, a fantastically good lens even
today).
Going out evenings and week-ends, it's rare for me not to throw the bag
with just about everything in it in the boot, and to have at least one
camera with me in the car.
And no, I've never had that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity come up when
I've had a camera with me either!

Admittedly, it is a bit biased as it is a support group for those with
failed surgery. But it does contain a lot of info of potential
complications. And it gives you a useful different point of view from
that of the laser eye clinic's sales talk.
