Oddly enough I get that reference. :-) I like it.

Disliked that film on first viewing; mostly because I didn't get the
Jay and Silent Bob shtick and found it aggravating and intrusive. Many
years later my wife and I became huge Kevin Smith fans (by way of
Mallrats) and found Dogma to be great fun the 2nd time around.

Yes a nice photo, I like the colours.  I agree with Bob about the border.

One of our camellias has started to burst into flower but the waxeyes have been 
knocking some of the flowers off as they come in for nectar.

little brighter in some areas, maybe even a different orientation, changed
the color in about 12 pixels - don't recall if it was posted to the list
with a horizontal or vertical orientation, although both are in my files.

Vertical, pretty sure. That's what my foggy brain seems to remember. Okay, 
tonality comes close to what I meant. I am imprecise on photography terms 
anyway.

Oh, Shel, not much to expand on :-).
Timeline might be all mixed up but you used to post street snaps a lot and I
even remember a thread about the street shooter or something in which you
were the centre.

Then, I saw few of your non-street shots which were very well composed and
different.  I thought you probably thought a lot about the light,
exposure, composition and other factors.  Results were striking and very
artistic, like the one you just posted.  Perhaps your switching to digital
may have something to do with it, I do not know.
Re techno-talk part, I just thought people tend to talk too much about
saturation, contrast, resolution and all those stuff but lousy photos :-).
Just good photos are convincing enough to override all these techno-talk.
Photography after all is the presentation of the art, not so much on the
computer manipulations talk :-).

Well, too long an expansion.  I like your deliberate shots.

Excellent, thanks for asking.

I was over in the west/south of the Island today, in Niarbyl. Very  
beautiful coastline with some restored, traditional Manx homes. The  
wind was up and weather was moving in so I could only shoot a little  
bit, but if I had the time I'd spend a lot more time on the west/ 
south coastal areas. Maybe next year ... I'm only on the Isle of Man  
for another day, off to Liverpool on Monday.

I've made a relatively small number of exposures on this trip, around  
500 or so, but I'm finding a very high percentage of keepers to  
work on. Mostly scenics and details this year, I've been in a more  
meditative state of mind than last year when I was concentrating on  
people photos. This will likely change as I head over to Liverpool,  
Gloucester and London... :-)

I'm glad that everyone else has said they like it a lot, because it
makes it easier to say what I think about it.

It really bothers me.  Looking at it is very disorienting, and not in
a good way g.  It literally makes me feel uneasy when I look at it. 
I don't know why, but it's an actual physical feeling.


Something about the sharpish centre and OOF edges just doesn't work
with me, at least with this photo.

I know, it's ironic that I of all people would feel that way...

That's perfectly fine... It is something I can probably understand. The 
way the corners are soft and slowly become sharper towards the middle of 
the frame can be unsettling.


What more interesting here, is to notice that this is shot on digital. 
Hence what you see is middle part of the frame, Frank. Imagine it was 
full frame size film shot...

Hi!


This is a better subject for the soft focus effect than the previous
one.  This effect doesn't seem to be nearly the same as a true soft
focus lens - more like an old Kenko filter I had that was a curved
glass with a center hole cut out.  I am seeing a much more distinct
edge in sort of an oval shape around the subject.  To really make it
for me, I would have like to see a smoother, gradual transition.

So for me, pretty good, but not great.


Bruce, this is not proper soft lens like in Pentax F 85/2.8 soft, 
no... You're quite right... It has different effect.


Given the chance I am going to try/buy Cokin A-system soft filters and 
try them with my lenses...


I cannot say that I am mad about soft effect, but it has its seasons, if 
you will... These days we have a weather that reminds me of Indian 
Summer - warm, but not hot, rather nice light, lots of yellow (as much 
as we can get in this evergreen land)... This is the time when I feel 
this undeniable urge to go out and take the soft lens with me ;-).

sharpening applied or something.


Godfrey, you're too insightful, you know... I found that various 
sharpening techniques when applied to soft lens image can produce 
unusual results...


Indeed I applied smart sharpen filter two or three times here...

So, like I said - you seem to know too much ;-).

per se.


I like the leaves, the composition, but something about the soft edges 
doesn't work for me. Maybe it makes me feel vision impaired, like I have cataracts 
or poor peripheral vision or something. ;-)

I am not going to ignore you! How dare you even think of such thing?! ;-)

But I am going to keep trying and posting pictures shot with this lens 
in the future...

To answer that - you recently posted some photo(s) that related to the 
same general motif... So I wanted to know your opinion as a fellow 
fallen leaves shooter ;-).



There is something with soft focus on this kind of motif. For me, soft focus
has to be realistic to be successful. One example is imitating fog in a
rainy landscape. 


That's most interesting thing, you've said, Tim. I never thought of 
realistic soft focus... I shall have to ponder this a little. This is 
indeed very deep observation... At least to me, right here, right now.



There are some exceptions from this rule. Some romantic motifs can benefit
from a soft focus effect, especially in high key portraits. Soft focus can
also be an effective way to create spooky effects. The reason for this is
mainly that it is common; there is no logical reason for this. 
What am I saying? Simply that I don't buy the soft effect here. I find it

rather disturbing :-(

that passing emotion, the feeling of change, the feeling of transition 
between hot summer and cold winter...



Simply because I like the motif and the composition under the softness.
First I do like the background, it is delicate, and suits the leaves. (It is
opposite than my picture, I was going for contrast). I also do like the
colour variations in the leaves. The leaf I see as the main leaf is almost
fresh and green (in left part of frame). I also see some geometric patterns
suggested. There are six yellow leaves in a dice like pattern. (This isn't
quite correct. The upper left leaf isn't one, it is two leaves, but my brain
does see it as the sixth). The green main leaf also has a counterpoint in
right frame. All this makes it a very good composition, IMO.

University campus where they have this rather special kind of 
pavement... I am not sure what it is, but it is made of square blocks 
that do look rather nice.

lens where it belongs, on the top shelf. The shelf you rarely look at, the
one with a lot of dust ;-)

should say - I don't like an idea of my gear collecting dust on some 
remote shelf, you know. If I see a piece of gear that I don't use and I 
realize I may not use it in the future - I'd rather sell it, or even 
give it away.

Realistic soft focus is how most of us see.
The camera lens is much sharper focus than our eyes.

One would be better to say unrealistic sharp focus when describing most 
pictures.

I understand more when you state that you were going for the transition

to me. Never the less, it did not work for me. Perhaps it is a cultural
thing, perhaps limitation in my perceptions.

Ironically or not, I did like the composition. 
I think you may be a little too humble, my friend. (It feels good to say my
friend, here ;-) )
The bunch of leaves caught you eye, you stopped, composed, and shot. You may
have done it on instinct, but I don't believe it was random you framed
exactly that pile of leaves. 
There is a lot of stuff going on in your mind that you are not conscious
about you know.

In principle I do appreciate that attitude. First because it's a waste, not
to use something, (I didn't really mean that part of my post literally,
btw). Second because I like the playful experimental aspects of using
alternative lenses and techniques.

This is a beautiful image, soft focus works very well with this

Boris, I like it very much. Not just another autumn pic, the soft
image works very well to create the mood of tranquility and autumn-ness.

By the way, it is shot with only the front or only the back lens of the
Helios 44K lens? I have tried to modify yesterday an Industar that I use
for paperweight but without success.

image works very well to create the mood of tranquility and autumn-ness.

Helios 44K lens? I have tried to modify yesterday an Industar that I use
for paperweight but without success.


Luben, mine is front element monocle... What is important to notice is 
that (at least for K-mount version of Helios 44 lens) once you leave 
only front element, it seems you loose close focus... And infinity 
happens to fall somewhere in the middle of the lens focusing range... 
So, my monocle uses Pentax extension ring #1 (the smallest one) in order 
to regain some of the close focus.

lol ... One of the best soft focus lenses I ever used was an old  
135mm Nikkor that had been sitting on a 'top shelf' where it was  
forgotten, sans lens cap, for a half a dozen years. The front element  
had gotten hazed with a funny, stippled finish from the layers of  
dust that sat on it until I found it and cleaned it off. It produced  
some beautiful, just enough softness without robbing the subject  
matter of details.

I'll speak to Cotty's remarks on this pic, knowing full well that my 
comments may in know way relate to Shel's feelings about his shot. 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I sensed that one of Cotty's objections 
was that this kind of color against BW background thing has been done 
before. As I read his comment, I couldn't help but think,yeah, of 
course it has. As have portraits, pictures of people on the street, 
nudes illuminatted by candlelight g, motion blur shots of people in 
activities, etc. Very little of what we do is blazingly original. Yet 
we normally commend work that repeats what has been done before with a 
certain level of artistry. I think this picture falls nicely into that 
category. In fact, it shows some elements of composition that I don't 
specifically recall having seen before. So, in fact, I would say it is 
more original than the majority of the work seen here. It is also quite 
pleasant to view. Those two things make it a winner in my book. How it 
was created is, and always should be, totally irrelevant.

You impress me as someone who should not step into a modern art gallery 
without a personal defibrillator.  :)


It amazes me that Shel's simply elegant image of a singular festive autumn 
leaf would drain you of so much of your energy. By the time you see some of 
the truly depressing work in some modern art galleries, you will really 
need that defibrillator.  ;)

Glen, I think I can say that out loud :-), I don't visit a gallery if I 
know it presents the art created after impressionist period (early 20th 
century)... I simply don't understand modern art. I went few times to 
exhibitions (well forced myself to go)... I went out deeply disturbed 
and confused...


I like classical paintings and impressionist paintings... Impressionism 
is my favorite style. It is simply so airy, so light, so alive...


I think the WWII still has its impact on the art.

Well, I did notice the smileys, but I think you deserved a more serious 
answer.

I often get the impression when I visit modern galleries that the artists are 
simply into shock and awe. I know it might sound a touch cynical but often I 
read some displays as if the artists are saying I dared to call this art, I 
managed dupe the public purse to secure a grant and conned a gallery to hang 
it. I've seen some truly utter crap on gallery walls over the years.

I'm not dumping on Shel here but just because something made it to a gallery 
doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be nourishing or meaningful to 
anyone but the artist.

Thanks for the link. Some very nice work, although, as I continued on 
through the gallery I began to feel that  the technique was leading to 
a certain redundancy. The fact that it was all done in camera is quite 
remarkable, but I don't think it makes it superior to the same type of 
thing done in post. Either method requires skill and vision. Doing it 
in camera is certainly much more difficult. To my mind that doesn't 
necessarily make it better. And in that it probably took a long time to 
master this one technique, it might even encourage repetition. But I 
find the work interesting and artistic in any case.

On second thought, the Grome work may not have been all that difficult 
to execute. The colors are probably the result of reversal or perhaps 
cross processing, and the various objects were probably shot on a light 
box.

Yes and the images I saw were displayed as back-lit chromes quite large (Derby 
might have seen them at some stage, they were at the Longrain restaurant 
http://www.longrain.com.au/), the edges were poor (badly defined) and they 
weren't as sharp as the size, presentation and subject type really should 
demand.

noticed that some people on this list seem to cringe at the mention of that 
program. Many of these same people probably admire the works of famous 
photographers who made their own meticulously prepared BW prints. 


I use PS constantly. I also admire many other photogs, including those
mentioned above.

understands the amount of manipulation that often went into much of the 
traditional classic BW printing, how could they look down on Photoshop?

Agreed.

That program does the same sorts of tricks that people have done in 
darkrooms for many, many years. There really isn't too much that can be 
done in Photoshop, which can't be done the old fashioned way.

I should say that (of course) I have no knowledge of how the image was
manipulated. It could be wet printed and hand coloured for all I know.
Shel mentioned he was in the digital doldrums, and I assume he put the
image up as either an illustration of how he was stuck, or finding a way
out of being stuck.

Either way, technically it's up to Shel's usual excellent standard, but
as a type of genre,  I find mono/colour patterns like this - a sort of
minimalist mosaic, if you like - of no interest. But that's my personal
preference.

I don't normally comment on a pic if I don't like it, usually pass on.
However, I know Shel will glean something from it, and if nothing else
will stir him into making a stew while he cogitates ;-)

Great book.  I was looking for my copy yesterday but couldn't find it. 
Just recommended it to another list member and she ordered a copy.  Every
photog should read it - it's that good!  

One of the little bits I especially liked, considering all the talk here
about what constitutes a professional camera, was David Hurn's choice for
a 35mm SLR.  His choice for a 6x6 was almost as interesting ;-))

shadow at the concrete in left part of the image. 
Can't say I like the composition. There is something with the placement of
the leaf.
Never the less, I can't help thinking of an IKEA poster. It is pleasant to
look at, but doesn't provoke any emotions.

I'll try to explain my IKEA referanse. 
IKEA is one of the kings in furniture. 
Google is our friend: A look at http://www.ikea.com/ will give you an idea.
It is huge. It is global. So I assumed it meant something to you. Anyway,
they do make nice and reasonable prized furniture. My bookshelves, and some
of my lamps, are IKEA ;-)

They do design, manufacture and sell Scandinavian modern style furniture
and accessories (this is the META-text at their global homepage).
 
Among other things they do make posters. Some of them are artsy in a quite
nice way. But as you may already have guessed, they are designed to be hung
at walls in an average modern family. In other words; it is pleasant to
look at, very politically correct and non provocative. 

BTW. I have bought some IKEA posters myself at work. I think they are Ok,
but not my personal taste most of them.

They recently built a new store a few miles from me. I was somewhat amused
to see most of it come flat packed. I hope the instructions were easy to
read.

IKEA markets decor art, in the form of graphics and photographs in  
large format, poster-quality prints. It's actually a great market to  
try to get into as a photographer ... hard to get in, of course, but  
they order accepted images in large volumes, printed on low cost,  
high production printing engines to a reasonable quality standard. I  
know a couple of guys who make a hefty chunk of money selling a photo  
to business like this.


Might be worth stopping into the Emeryville IKEA store (on a weekday  
morning to avoid the crowds... ;-) and poking around, Shel.
