You should be able to down load the enabler from this link.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=26181

OR

If you have of 7.6.1, that would be better than OS 7.5.3. It fixes a lot
of bugs.

Subject: Orinoco 7.2 drivers

Hi,

I'm trying to find a copy of the Orinoco 7.2 drivers so I can take my
PowerBook 3400 on my wireles network. It seems that the company that
made them has made it almost impossible to find them for download.

I looked it up on versiontracker.com.. the download link is old and
doesn't work.. it's the same one linked in this article:

http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

On versiontracker someone posted a link to what is supposed to be where
it is downloadable, but stuffit on the powerbook chokes on it.

http://www.sst23.com/orinoco.smi.zip

I tried decompresing it on my G4 running OS X and then copying the file
to my PowerBook but then attempting to run the smi file the PowerBook
gives me an error. I havn't been able to find any other sites on Google
except for more dead download links.

If anyone can help me get the Orinoco 7.2 drivers so I can get my
powerbook online wirelessly, it'd be really appreciated.

Thank you,

-Matt

You will find the dirvers you need on my Wireless FAQ page.

To access the Orinoco v7.2 drivers you can register for tech support at the
Proxim web site. Or try one of the alternate links I have found.

Proxim has the drivers for both the Orinoco and Skyline wireless cards.
They also have the drivers for most all of the Farallon Ethernet cards.

Farallon seems to be nonexistent now. I don't have a driver for this

I dont think you need any software to connect to a single ethernet network.
I think that Farallon made a software for adjusting the adaptor to connect
to different zones.

I may have that software someware. Give me a couple days to look for it.
Its on a floppy disk, and I can send you a disk image via email.

What are you using as a Key. Specifically is it text or Hex (numbers

running afoul of the different way different hardware / software
turns a text key into a hex key. Down in side the router and
wireless card use a binary key. This can readily be displayed as a
Hex key and all equipment works with this without trouble. Most
wireless encryption systems have a method for inputting a text key
and converting it to a hex key. This makes it easier to write it
down or remember it. Problem is the text to hex conversion process
gets done differently.

What you need to do is look at your router setup and get the hex key.
Then enter this into your laptop. I don't know about the Orinoco
software specifically but most have a method for signifying that you
are entering a hex key (since a hex key could also be interpreted as
a text key). With Apple's stuff you prefix the hex key with a $
(dollar sign).

If you are still having problems I recommend turning off the WEP on
the router to verify you can connect. Then try turning on WEP to get
it working.

I would like to add the that if using a hex key in the Orinoco software,
put a double quotation mark () in front of the hex key. No space between
the double quotation mark and the key. Make sure that your use key 1 on
both devices.

You might want to try 64 bit WEP first, as the key is smaller and easer to
work with. Once you have been able to get WEP working in this mixed
enviroment, then change your key to use 128 bit WEP.

The Orinoco v7.2 drivers will show a signal streingth, without connecting
via WEP. The only way to tell if the WEP key is good, is to look at your
TCP/IP control pannel and see if you have a valid IP Address.

Compare you IP Addres with WEP off, to that of WEP on.

Your card should say Encryption 128RC4 on the back. If it does, it
supports 64 128 bit WEP.

Re: PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi

2005-09-29 Thread Kenneth Vann

Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 10:01:24 -0700
From: Roger Andre [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi

Hi Kenneth,

Thanks for the help. Here is what I know/see:

- I have never setup a pcmcia ethernet card in this machine, as I could
not find drivers for either the Linksys or Belkin cards that I have. I
did setup a Linksys 56k modem however.

- I do not have an Alternate Ethernet connection option in my
Appletalk Control Panel. All I have are: Ethernet, IRTalk,
Modem/Printer, and Remote Only.

- When I choose Use DHCP Sever in my TCP/IP settings for Ethernet, I
do not have the option to specify a DNS server. All I have is a box
that says Search Domains in which I could put an entry. I've been
assuming that means something like earthink.net, or
globexplorer.com, but am not sure.

- Finding the WaveLan Version 6.00.4 driver wasn't easy, and it was the
only one I ran across. Do you know where I could find a v6.3 one?

- I would love to update the OS on this machine to 8.6, as I believe
that I could use the 7.2 Orinoco driver with that OS. However, as lame
as it sounds, I haven't been able to find an 8.5 install CD locally, and
as I understand it, I need to load that first and then install 8.6 over
it. If I'm wrong there, please clarify. I don't know the Mac OS
extremely well, and I don't really know what to buy from the
descriptions I see on eBay. Alot of the CD's seem to imply that they
are restore CD's for specific types of machines.

- Thanks for the info on what to do with the hex values in the wi-fi
settings. I had no clue there.

Regards,

Roger

Hi Roger. Ok let's start with the easy questions.

OS 8.6 is available as a full install cd. No need to purchase OS 8.5 and
then upgrade. You would be better off with a Retail version of the OS 8.6
vs a machine specific version. Post a want to buy on the LEM Swap list or
check out this link to ebay.

http://computers.search.ebay.com:80/OS-8-6_Operating-Systems_W0QQbsZSearchQQcatr
efZC6QQfclZ3QQfgtpZQQfposZ23452QQfromZR2QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQlopgZQ
QsacatZ80256QQsadisZ200QQsaprchiZQQsaprcloZQQsaslcZ2QQsatitleZOSQ208Q2e6QQsbrfto
gZ1QQsofocusZunknown

How much ram do you have? If you go to OS 8.6 You may need more ram than
you currently have. Also read the section on my Wireless FAQ for Known
Issues with v7.2 of the Orinoco drivers.

The AppleTalk and TCP/IP selections may have been named Ethernet instead of
Alternate Ethernet in OS 8.1, so that should not be a problem. In the
TCP/IP control panel, put those DSN numbers in the Search Domains section.
If the OS 8.1 TCP/IP has a selection that says Alternate Search Domains,
then in that one put earthlink.net

As for v6.3 of the software, their are links to it on my web site. Here is
a direct link.

http://ftp4.de.freesbie.org/pub/misc/wavelan/software/ORiNOCO/PC_Card/MacOS/

You want the file MacOS_63.bin. Use Stuffit expander to uncompress the
file. This file adds a control strip module which lets you adjust the
software settings.

I want to remind you, that I do not have a computer using OS 8.1, so
everything I say is from my old memory. If others are stilling using OS
8.1, please jump in to help.

Its important to note, that your modem software installer may have placed
something into the System file. While this is highly unlikely, if it did,
then you will need to do a clean install of the OS. The Orinoco software
does not like any modification to the System software. Sometimes it will
complete its install, but nothing will work. This is covered on my Wireless
FAQ.

The key to solving your problem is to get wireless working before adding
WEP. As I understand, you need 128bit WEP to access the network at work. It
has been my experience that getting wireless to work on a PB 1400 or any
other PB that uses card and socket services v2 is difficult. Don't worry
about that, because it's in the ROMS and you cannot update it. While
difficult, wireless can be installed on your 1400.

I am typing this to you on a PB 1400 that I have set up with wireless. I
can use either the Orinoco card or the Skyline card. I prefer the Skyline,
but it only supports 64bit WEP.

Just a note to others following this thread. It has been my experience that
the Proxima/Faralon Skyline card software v3.1 is much more mature and user
friendly than the Orinoco software. If you don't need WEP or can live with
64 bit WEP, then try the Skyline card.

Be sure to read Derek Miller's great site to see how to install wireless on
older PowerBook computer.

I hope this helps.

Snip

I have set my Appletalk control panel to Connect Via: Ethernet, and
the TCP/IP control panel to Connect Via: Ethernet as well. Aside from
that, I'm not really sure what to do next. My IT staff at work has the
following type of info listed on our support page:

Hi Roger. I have never set up the Orinoco software under OS 8.1 but lets
give this a try.

First off, have you ever installed a PCMCIA ethernet card? If so, then that
software for that card will keep the wireless card from working. To fix
that problem you will need to do a clean install of the OS. See my FAQ page
for more info on this.

If you have not installed a ethernet card, lets see if this will help.
First select the AppleTalk Control Panel and select Alternate Ethernet. You
do not have to turn on AppleTalk, just point it to the Alternate Ethernet.

In the TCP/IP Control Panel, Seclct Connect Via: Alternate Ethernet,
Configure: Using DHCP Server. Then make sure you have Name Server Address
listed. You can use 207.217.120.83, 207.217.77.82, 207.217.126.81. These
are for Earthlink. Your IT Adminstrator may have given you other numbers,
if so, use them.

When you want to set up the WEP Pasphrase, enter the Hexadecimal value in
the WaveLan software, with a $ (Dollar) sign in front of the Hex value. Use
the first HEX value your IT admin gave you.

Make sure you set the channel on your card, to the same channel you want to
connect to.

You may want to try to update your WaveLan software with v6.3, which ads a
control panel to assist you in setting up a connection. This control pannel
should let you see the signal you are trying to connect to.

As for testing your card, it would help if you could go to some public
wireless area, and see if you can connect to their signal with out WEP. If
a friend has a laptop with wireless, he could set up a computer to computer
connection (called Ad Hock) and you could try to connect.

You need to make sure the card and software package are working before you
work on the WEP.

As I said before, the Orinoco software seems to work better under OS 8.6. I
am sure others on this list have made it work under OS 8.1.

I hope this helps.

I know that the subject of Wi-fi cards has been discussed quite a bit.
Does anyone have a list of what cards do not (or DO) have drivers
available that will work with OS 8.1?

I've heard that Macwireless cards have drivers compatible, but are there
others? My understanding is that the popular Lucent/Orinoco cards
require OS 9 or higher.

Thanks,
Spence

Hi Spence. The Lucent/Orinoco will work from OS 8.1 to 9.2.2, but seem to
work best with OS 8.6 or above. To use with OS 8.1 you will need v6 and or
v6.3 of the Orinoco drivers. If you can install OS 8.6 on your PB, the use
v7.2 of the Orinoco drivers.

In addition, Faralon/Proxim Skyline work well from OS 7.5.5 and above, but
only support 64Bit WEP.

The Asante cards also have drivers for your PowerBook, but the cards are
hard to find.

My Wireless FAQ has a list of available drivers and cards which will work
on your PowerBook. Each card that I have a picture to, has been tested on
a PB 1400.

It also includes troubleshoot the problems with Wireless on a PowerBook 1400.

I've decided on the 1400, but how much would a CD-RW drive that is
compatable with the 1400 cost? Also, can you make copies of PC CDs
with a Mac?

I have a PB 1400, with a Sonnet G3 upgrade. With an externial LaCie CD/rw,
8/8/24, the best I was ever able to record was 2 speed. That was with Toast
Deluxe v4.

This past weekend, I set up the PB1400 and a Wallstreet on a wireless
network, and transferred about 2gb of files off the 1400 and then burned
them on the Wallstreet using a VST 8/8/24 speed firewire burner. The file
transfer took about an hour (while I did something else) and about 30
minutes to burn the files to three cd. This was faster than burning them on
the 1400.

You can find a 4 or 8 speed burner for very low cost on ebay.

Greetings. I am looking to pick up a 16-bit 802.11b wireless PC card
for my PowerBook 3400c (200MHz version running OS 8.6). I have an
opportunity to get a CISCO Aironet 340 card at a great price. But I
am trying to determine if it will work with my configuration.

Does anyone on the list have experience with this card on a pre-G3
machine? The documentation I have found online, including CISCO's own
documentation refers only to G3 and G4 machines running OS 9.2.x and
up. I don't want to risk the purchase without a clear YES IT WILL WORK.

Thanks for your assistance.

Yes, you can with version 6 of the Orinoco driver, but you will have a much
better PowerBook if you can upgrade to at least OS 8.6 and then use the
v7.2 drivers.

If you are short or ram, then i can understand your desire not to upgrade.

How much ram do you have? What are the specs for your PB1400.

Types of suitable Wireless PC cards for Powerbook 3400c

2005-08-02 Thread Kenneth Vann

On Wed, 03 Aug 2005 ,Sorular [EMAIL PROTECTED] Asked

1) Would Netgear WG-511 work on my pb3400? The Netgear product site
doesn't say anything about MacOS9 compatibility
(http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WG511.php) but this model is
the cheapest I could find on the market. Is there a way to get it
working on my pb?
I'm aware that I'll need to shave-off the the pc card a bit to get it
fit into the pb

IOXperts and Macsense have drivers that will work on your 3400 as long as
you are using OS 8 or above. You will find links on my Wireless FAQ site to
these drivers. Check their list of supported cards before you buy.

You say you will have to shave off the end of the PC Card. This indicates
you are looking at a cardbuss card. This type of card is not supported with
these drivers. You need an origional 16Bit card. The specific card you
linked to is 802.11g and will not work on your 3400 under any condition.

You will be limited to 802.11b, unless you want to use a ethernet to
wireless adaptor. It kinds of makes your 3400 less protable, but could be
useful if you are using the pb as a desktop.

If you are running OS 8.6 or above, you can use the AirPort v1.3.1 drivers.
Andrew Kershaw has some great info on installing AirPort software on your
PowerBook 3400. You may want to spend a little more money, and get a card
which works with these drivers. Both Andrew's web site, and description of
AirPort compatable cards are linked on my FAQ site.

Their are at least 4 types of the Orinoco card that will work with the
AirPort v1.3.1. Pictures and discriptions available on my FAQ.

If not, than any of the cards listed on my FAQ will work with your PB.

Are you planing to use WEP encryption? If so, what have you chosen to use,
40/64 or 128Bit? Some of the 16Bit cards support both, some only the 40/64.

2) Flash card on powerbooks been talked to death all over the internet
but not quite in terms of its advantages and whether it's worth spending
much funds on that (that I could find!).

1GB Compact Flash cards are selling local (local to me) for about $70. US.

I use some in a PowerBook 1400 to switch out OS and test different wireless
cards. A bit longer battery life. Cant tell if the preformance is better.
But I like using them. Ram Doubler is a better solution for vm than compact
flash cards.

Hope this information helps.

You may be able to use it with the software from MacSense or IOXperts. I
beleave your PowerBook uses Card and Socket Services v3 which is required

Wallstreet wont charge

2005-06-12 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All.

I thought I would pass a long my solution for my Wallstreet II (PDQ) that
was not charging the battery.

After replacing the charge card, power card and other parts, I found that
the RF shield on the right side hinge of the PowerBook was just touching
the outer shield of the power plug, when the AC power supply was pluged in.

When I removed the AC power supply, the withdraw of the plug would pull the
shield back into proper position. The shield is a small piece of copper
tape with a glue backing. With age, this glue dried out.

Sealing the shield to its support with some contact glue solved the
problem, and the PowerBook now charges fine.

The moral to this story: Read the repair manual before taking it apart.
This symptom and the repair was in the manual. I just did not catch the
problem because every time I had the book apart, the shields seemed to be
in place.

I hope someone can learn from my mistake.

Subject: Orinoco Driver Loop
From: William Damkoehler [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, Listers.

Just put an Orinoco Classic Gold wireless PC card into my Powerbook
1400. I attempted to install a driver I downloaded from the Orinoco
site (version 7.2) which is designed to work with OS 8.6 which I'm
using on the 'Book. (This 'Book has been upgraded to a 233MHz G3, has
the small HD and has 64MB of built-in memory.)

When I attempt to run the installation I enter an eternal loop:
Clicking Install leads to the License Agreement - clicking Agree
leads to Install - clicking Install leads to the License
Agreement - clicking Agree leads to Install - clicking Install
leads to the License Agreement - clicking Agree leads to Install
- clicking Install leads to...well, you get the picture.

I've e-mailed Orinoco Support about this but have had no response
except to say that I will get a response!

I did track down an earlier version of the driver and am using it but
would like the features of v7.2. Anybody else ever confront this
problem?

Thanks for all past, present and future expertise!

-Bill

I have documented a problems similar to this on my wireless FAQ site. See
question 5. Try the solutions listed. Download same version of the
installer from a different location. Additional locations listed on my web
site.

This problem is only with the early PowerBooks which use card and socket
services v2. No you can not upgrade that, its in the ROM.

John, the problem sounds exactly like a low PRAM battery. You said that
your put in a new PRAM battery, was this battery new or used?

I have purchased a used but good PRAM battery and it did not help.

I finally put in two new PRAM batteries (the 1400/166 uses two).

 This solved my problems.

I also had a Wallstreet acting weird, and when I replaced the PRAM
 battery,
 all the weird went away.

 Ken Vann

Thanks for the reply. The pram battery is used and I was afraid of that.
Would the lack of a good main battery have an effect on the power manager
reset?

John

Hi John.

In my expierence, the lack of a good Main battery will not affect your
problems.

A new PRAM battery will cost you about $16.00 plus shipping.

By the way, even with two new PRAM batteries in my 1400/166, I cannot
change the main battery while in sleep mode. The Apple manual says I should
be able to, but the computer will not fully wake up from sleep.

I figure that while both were new, one was fresher than the other. I did
buy one off ebay, and one from an Apple Service Dealer, ( nice dealer, most
wont sell you a part). My 1400/166 now keeps the settings for TCP/IP and
AppleTalk between shutdowns, and between main battery changes. I did put in
a Sonnet G3 accelerator, but that made no difference in the original
problem.

Some of the desktops also act weird when the PRAM battery is low. A person
I met at last night user group meeting has a Blue White G3, that she is
afraid to shut down. It takes forever to start back up. She has been
putting it in sleep mode for 5 months.

I advised her to get a PRAM (1/2AA Lithium) battery also. These are
available at her local Radio Shack, but way overpriced at $15.00. However
when you only need one, then it does not make sense to ship it in.

You can get new fresh PB PRAM batteries from here at a good price:

I hope this helps.

I have no reference to it on my Wireless FAQ site. Is this a OEM version of
the Lucent WaveLan/Orinoco card?

Check the FCC ID number on the back of the card and compare it to the
numbers I have on my FAQ. If they are the same, then the card may be
compatable with the Orinoco drivers.

Please see the note on Wireless FAQ about the Alvarion BreezeNET PC-DS.11b

Orinoco Mac software. This is the only OEM I found that does this.

What OS is the 3400c using?

No speed demon, but plenty fast for him.

As for Ethernet card and wireless, they wont coexist at the same time on a

Subject: PCMCIA Ethernet card-drivers?

Powerbook Power Users,

The internal ethernet card isn't working on my 3400c.
The problem seems to be the main logic board, not the
Ethernet card, so I decided to buy an Ethernet card
for the PCMCIA slot. I bought a used 3Com 3CCFEM556B
10/100 LAN modem card and can't get it to work.

I'm discovering now that I need a driver for a PCMCIA
card. Is this correct? When I consider which Ethernet
card to get, do I need to make sure that I only buy
one that includes a Mac driver? (I did discover a Mac
driver for another 3Com card, but doesn't work with
this one)

Same thing for a PCMCIA card for wireless internet
access, I need to find a brand/model with a Mac
driver, correct?

USB card, I also need that the card comes with Mac
drivers (or can download) Is this correct?

One additional item, my indicator for the Battery
Life Remaining isn't showing up. Is that an
extension? What is the name of it?

Thank you,
Bill

Hi Bill.

For your EtherNet card, look for a Farallon EtherMac PCMCIA Ethernet card.
They come up all the time on ebay, run about $10. Drivers are available on
my web site for them, or drivers are available here.

http://www.proxim.com/support/all/maccard/software/index.html

You will want the one with the Red Arrow on the front of card (model 595a).
This is the later version and more compatable. There is one with a Blue
Arrow on the front, and it will work, but I have only used the 595a model.

By the way, this card was made by 3Com, so if you have a 3Com dongel, it
will work with this card. Its 10baseT, but with the approiate 3Com dongel,
you can connect to a Thinnet or Thicknet network if nessary.

For your PCMCIA Wireles card, my web site will have tons of information on
cards that are compatable with your PowerBook. If you are running OS 8.6 or
above, you can use the Apple Airport drivers v1.3.1. and a compatable card.
Their is a list of Airport Compatable cards on my wireless FAQ site.
Otherwise, any Orinoco compatable card will be useable.

The Skyline card is also a good choice, but only if you dont have the need
for 128 bit WEP. It only supports 64 bit WEP.

For a USB Card, I have used the early Belkin (USB v1.1 only) with the Apple
drivers. Others should be able to guide you on this topic as I don't have
you model of PowerBook.

Re: 190 browsing

From: Caleb Cupples [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: 190 browsing

I just bought a 190 running OS8 and I need some recommendations as to
what ethernet and/or dial-up modems work best and which browsers are
best. Are there any WiFi cards that are compatible? Please help.

Caleb

The Proxim Skyline Documents (v3.1) state that the 190 is supported.

The Orinoco Documents (v6.00.4) states that the 190 is supported.

Based on my experience, the Skyline v3.1 software is more mature for your
190 than the Orinoco (v6.00.4) when using OS8.

If you are able to run OS 8.6, only then would I recommend the Orinoco
software.

Please note that the Skyline software only supports 64Bit WEP, while the
Orinoco supports 64 128Bit WEP.

You can find links to the software and manuals for both cards on my
Wireless FAQ Site.

As for dial up modem, any full PCMCIA modem is usable. It must be a full
modem, not a WIN Modem. I have had good luck with modems by Zoom and
Supra. The Zoom is still available new, but the Supra is only available
used. Also any stand alone modem will work, again it must not be a WIN
Modem. You just need a Mac specific cable.

As for EtherNet card, a Farallon EtherMac card works well under OS 8. They
are available used on ebay. But please note, that it is difficult to get a
190 to work with both a Wireless EtherNet and wired EtherNet at the same
time. Not impossible, just difficult.

If my router has 26 digit encryption and my Orinoco card has only space

signal? Got me baffled.

BM

The Orinoco v7.2 software will support 26 digit encryption. It's just the
little window is to small to see all the digits.

Just yesterday set one up with 28 digits, 0x plus the hex password.

On 2/27 Fluster [EMAIL PROTECTED] Posted answers I submitted to the

Subject: Fwd: PB1400 Wireless Answers

Here is a post on this subject from January this year.

Snip

The Skyline card software is more Mac like. The Mac compatible Skyline is
available New and used. It supports many models from OS 7.5.5 to 9.2.2. I
recommend System Software 8.6 and Skyline software v3.1 for your PB1400.
When purchasing a Skyline, you must get the correct one, as there are some
Skyline wireless card's that are for Windows only. The Proxim Skyline card
also supports 128 bit encryption.

Correction: The Proxim Skyline card, for Macintosh, only supports 40/64 Bit
WEP encryption.

Version 3.1 of the Skyline software only supports HEX passwords that are 10
characters long.

The Skyline software will correctly translate a plain text password that
you put into a original Graphite Base Station, (or a Snow, if set to 40/64
Bit WEP) so you don't need to know what the Network Equivalent Password is.

When connecting to a Airport Base Station, and using a HEX password
provided by the Base Station Administrator, the Skyline software Does Not
require a HEX Escape before the password.

I hope this error did not cause any problems.

All other information about the Skyline for Macintosh is correct.

On a different topic, Earthlink says that I am using too much bandwidth for
this site, so here is a alternate address if the origional is blocked. I am
looking for a commercial host now and hope to solve these problems soon.

WEP Encription with Orinoco Software

2005-01-29 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All. I have a problem and need your assistance.

I have received a used Snow Base Station and I am trying to connect to it
via wireless with my PowerBook 1400 and the Orinoco v7.2 drivers.

I can connect and surf the web with WEP off, or with WEP set to 40/64 bit
encryption, but not with it set to 128 bit.

If I change PCMCIA cards, the result is the same.

I have a Lucent WaveLan Gold, and a DYI Wireless. Both are marked as
supporting 128RC4 encription. When I use them in my Wallstreet with the
Apple Airport software v2.0.2, I can connect with the WEP set to 128 bit.
Everything works great. If I change start up disk, and start up from a disk
with the Orinoco software, then the Wallstreet has the same problem as the
1400.

The Equivalent Network Password works fine with 40/64 bit encryption, but
not with 128 bit. The Orinoco software requires a HEX excape before the
password, but I have put that in (zero-x). I have retyped it several times
with no success.

I have also checked and made sure I use a Airport password of the right
length for WEP. 5 letters/numbers for 40/64 WEP and 13 for 128.

I used the JAVA Base Station configuration software to look at the Snow
Base Station and check its WEP password. The only difference in it as
compaired to the Airport Software was that the Equivalent Network Password
is in lower case when viewed with the JAVA tools, and in upper case when
viewed with the Airport tools. Does that make a difference?

Both PowerBooks are running OS 9.1.

Has any one had a similar experience? I am beginning to think that the
Orinoco v7.2 software does not support 128 bit encryption.

By the way, the Skyline software does not support 128 bit WEP encription.

Thank for all your help.

Re: Wireless for 2400c

Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2005 09:21:31 -0500
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Wireless for 2400c

I've equipped my trusty 2400/180/80/6G/9.1with a Dell TrueMobile 802.11b
wireless card. After letting the Orinoco installer do its thing, the card
is recognized as a Gold card and the signal from my Airport Extreme base
station is picked up, nice and strong.

Unfortunately, however, that's where I was and still am: I haven't been
able to go on the net. Any time I configure TCP/IP (either through DHCP or
manually), after an attempt to connect, I find the settings changed: it
looks as though the book itself puts in some weird IP address, subnet mask
and router address.

Any ideas as how to overcome this problem?

Thanks,

Peter Dijkwel

Ok lets see if this will help.

First, check the Orinoco control strip. It must have green bars, (that look
like a signal strength meter on a cell phone), to be connected to the
Wireless Network. If not then WEP may be your problem.

Next you need to put a DNS server address in the bottom of the TCP/IP
Window. This will be in the field that says Name Server Addr.: Your ISP
will give you this number. A common DNS server is 207.217.120.83 for
Earthlink, and 204.127.129.1 for ATT. Use the numbers your ISP gives you.

Then you Set up the rest as follows:
Configure using DHCP Server:
DHCP Client ID: leave blank
IP Address: Will be supplied by server
Subnet Mask: Will be supplied by server
Router Address: Will be supplied by server
Additional Search Domains: Leave Blank unless you ISP says otherwise.

Give it about a minute for the Apple Base Station to serve you an DHCP
Client ID, and then you should be able to go on the internet.

Subject: Wireless for 3400

Hi-

Could some one direct me to some good wireless cards for the 3400? Do
they make just B cards or G as well for them? I'm new to this
wireless, as I just got my first Airport card, so excuse my ignorance
here :^).

Thanks-Jared

Hi Jarred

Take a look at my Wireless FAQ. Any of the Lucent WaveLan (or most oem
versions), MacWireless and the Skyline will be a good choice.

You will only be able to use a b card.

If you get a Lucent WaveLan Gold, Lucent Orinoco Gold, Agree Orinoco Gold,
Proxim Classic Gold or a YDI Diamond card, you will be able to use the
Airport Software v1.3.1 on your 3400. If not, then the Orinoco v7.2 will
work just fine. This assumes that your OS is at least v8.6.

The Gold card is 128 Bit Encryption. The Silver is 40/64 Bit. The Silver can
be upgraded, but why go through the process if you haven't bought one yet.
Be careful when buying Proxim Orinoco Gold cards, only the Clasic version
supports Mac.

The Farallon Proxim versions of the Skyline cards are a good choice also.
The Proxim versions support 128 Bit Encryption, the Farallon versions have
a flasher to upgrade to 128 Bit. Both version support OS 7.5.5 through
9.2.2 with v3.1 of their software. You have to be careful to get a Mac
version of the card, as some were made for Windows only. Detail's on my FAQ
site.

MacWireless is pricer, but they have a 16-Bit high power card (and a
regular power card) available that works on the Classic OS from 7.5.5 to
9.2.2. If you are looking for more power, the MacWireless high power is the
one to go with. The MacWireless people origionaly designed the Farallon and
Proxim Skyline cards.

Their are some links on the bottom of my FAQ page for where to buy
including a link to a retailer who has the Mac version of a Proxim Skyline
card in stock, new in box.

Hope this helps.

PB1400 Wireless Answers

2005-01-16 Thread Kenneth Vann

Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2005 23:42:34 -0500
From: Fluxstringer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I changed the subject line on this spinoff thread as someone should
have a while back.

So perhaps the one concerning the 1400 can continue. I'm interested
the 1400 relevant wifi

and tired of reading posts aimed at the other models.

Forgive my ignorance here. It is hard for me to know the overlap of
what will work from model to model as i don't have a stack of
powerbooks in the closet.

So more concerning PB1400 under the former subject line please.

Well to start with, we should choose a software which will work on your
older PowerBook. If you don't already have a wireless card, their are 4
choices. Orinoco, Skyline, Asante, MacWireless. Software for all of these
will work on a PowerBook 1400.

Orinoco and Skyline are the most common but out of production, Asante is
out of production, MacWireless is in production.

This email will cover the Orinoco and Skyline as they are the most common.
The Asante is hard to find, and the MacWireless cost more.

For help in installing wireless on a PB1400 ,start with my Wireless FAQ
Page. There you will find all the software links you need, and my personal
experience on the problems I encountered putting wireless on my PB1400.

You can also read Derek Miller great site about his experience with a
PowerBook 1400. Its the first link on my site.

The PB1400 can be tricky to get to wireless if you have ever installed
software for a PCMCIA or Internal Ethernet card. This is a problem with all
PowerBooks that use Card Socket Services v2. CSS2 can not be updated, it
is in the Roms.

Most any of the Lucent WaveLan, Proxim Orinoco Classic Gold and OEM/clones
listed on my FAQ will work. These cards are available new and used. I
recommend System Software 8.6 and Orinoco software v7.2 for your PB1400.
Several people have reported that the Orinoco installer will not complete
the installation on a PB1400. This is covered in the Troubleshooting
section on my Wireless FAQ. Also if you chose to use this card type, make
sure you get one which is 128 bit encryption. The back of the card will say
128RC4 somewhere on the label.

See my FAQ site for photos and a FCC ID Number for the correct one sold
under the Proxim Skyline name. I don't have Photos or a confirmed FCC ID
Number for the one sold as the Farallon Skyline. This card is still
available under the MacWireless name as they provided the software to
Farallon. It's a bit more expensive if you buy it new from them versus shop
on ebay for a new or used one from Proxim.

Both of these software and card packages will connect to any 802.11b or
802.11g base station. Both are compatible with the Airport Base Stations.
And you can configure a Graphite or Snow Base station with the Airport Base
Station Utility or Java configuration tools on your PB 1400 using eithor
card.

Subject: PB1400 and D-Link DWL-G630 PCMCIA 802.11b/g?
From: nhj [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,
Does anyone know if a D-Link DWL-G630 PCMCIA 802.11b/g works in a powerbook
1400?
Trying to get my PB1400 working on a wireless system.
Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne

The 802.11a/b/g combo cards are not supported with the older PowerBooks
under the Classic OS.

Any of the Lucent WaveLan or OEM of Lucent will work well on your PowerBook
1400, with OS 8.6 and Oricono v7.2 software.

However I do perfer a Farallon Skyline, or Proxim Skyline wireless cards
for older Macintosh Powerbooks (pre G3). Their are servial different models
of Skyline cards, but only a small number of them work with Macintosh. The
software is much more Mac like than the Orinoco. See my Wireless FAQ for
info on how to identify the correct Skyline card.

Be sure to read my Wireless FAQ Troublshooting sections on the PowerBook
1400. It is my own expierence troubleshooting mine and my friends Powerbook
1400's. The 1400 is tricky to install wireless (only tricky if you have
ever installed a Ethernet card) but once you have it set up, it works great.

I am also wondering where I can get drivers for a

considering purchasing one.

Depending on which EtherMac Card you have, Blue Arrow or Red Arrow on top,
these links should help. I use one in my PB1400 and its is great.

For version 595a EtherMac Card, Red Arrow on front:

For all Farallon Ethernet Software:

Windows drivers are available for the 595a card, if you need to share.

There may be other resources for Farallon Software, but finding them is
hard to do. Proxim purchased the Farallon products while they were in
Bankruptcy. So far only a small amount of the Farallon Software has ever
been posted.

Farallon Software for the Skyline series of wireless cards and adaptors can
be found by following the links on my wireless FAQ page.

After Proxim dropped production and sale of the Skyline cards, they were
taken over by a group of former Farallon engineers, and they formed
MacWireless.com.

Also, if you are thinking about adding Wireless to your PowerBook 1400,
read the trouble shooting questions on my FAQ before you install the
EtherMac Software. Software for Wired and Wireless Ethernet will not
coexist peacefully on a PowerBook 1400.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could get this to work? Thanks.

The error message you have is usually when the software for a PCMCIA PC
Card is not installed or damaged. I have never seen it occur with a floppy
disk, but I have the following suggestions.

Your PowerBook must be in Sleep Mode, or OFF, to change the Floppy
Expansion Bay Module. If you are getting this error message when inserting
a floppy disk into the floppy drive, then either the floppy disk is bad, or
your install of the OS is bad.

Switching between Floppy and CD-ROM Expansion Bays can sometimes be
troublesome if you have Energy Savings set to low.

Use you Apple System Profiler to see if it sees the floppy drive.

If not then check the contact on the rear of the Expansion Bay Module and
see if any are damaged or missing. Also check the contacts in the PowerBook
and see if there is any damage.

Last but not least. The PowerBook 1400 only accepts Expansion Bay Modules
in the Right Hand Bay. A extra battery may be installed in the right hand
bay for storage, but it does not charge in that bay.

If it is the floppy disk, e-mail me off list, as I have a extra good
working Floppy Expansion Bay Module.

Re: Help needed with proposed airport network

2004-12-01 Thread Kenneth Vann

This is one way to do it, but prehaps not the correct way.

As you want to use the 7600 as you router, you will need a software router
(IP Net Router) to make that work. You might have to add another Ethernet
card to the 7600 unless you are using a modem to connect to the Internet.

A better way to go is with a stand alone hardware router, like the Snow
Base Station, or other, which will let you share your internet with both
the wireless and wired machines. As the 7600 and iMac are not portable
machines, this should not be a problem.

This is should work with either dial up or DSL/Cable.

The cost of the IP Net Router and a used Snow Base Station is about the same.

If it is not practicable to run wires between the 7600/iMac and the Base
Station, then a Ethernet wireless adaptor should work. There are some links
on my FAQ to a Dlink product that will work under OS 9.

You might be able to find one of the PCI adaptor cards for the WaveLan PC
Card you already have. If so, this could be used to put the 7600 on
wireless. Farallon/Proxim also had a Skyline PCI Card which used the
Skyline PC card to put a PCI slot Mac on wireless. If you found a
Farallon/Proxim PCI adaptor, then you could use the Skyline PC card you
already have, and convert the PB5300c to use one of the extra WaveLan Gold
cards.

Please let me know what your final solution is.

At present we have;
 a PB5300C /OS 9 all fired up with a Proxim card;
 a Power PC upgraded  540C /OS 8.6 with an enterasys card;
a PowerMac 7600 / OS 9 upgraded to G3 using a Sonic Crescendo but no radio

 and
a recently aquired iMac Blue which only has USB ports. We have an Apple
Airport and several spare WIFI cards all of which are compatible with any
proposed system ( mainly Wavelan Gold and Wavelan Bronze mainly).

Does anyone have any ideas on a good or the the best way to put this puzzle
together so that possibly we could use a landline from the 7600 to the
Airport and then wireless the 5300 and the 540? or, better still, is there a
way of connecting the iMac somehow into the loop bearing in mind it only has
USB outlets and we cannot see a means of equiping it with a card as it is a
tray loading and not slot loading version?

Sorry some of this is strictly speaking off-topic but its all to get the
powerbooks functional n the end.

Re: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

2004-10-08 Thread Kenneth Vann
Paypal and its parent eBay upgrade their software (the new eBay 2.0) on or
about June 5, 2004. They no longer fully support Mac OS 9 browsers. Their
new eBay 2.0 is designed to work with Windows computers only. They wont
admit this, but that is what has happened.

Here is what I have found out that does not work with Paypal.

iCab, cannot change funding source, it gives you a new page asking to add a
new bank account. Unable to complete payments because of this. Cannot send
a trouble report by their web based system, buttons don't work when you try
to send the report. Prior to this upgrade, iCab worked in all functions.
iCab version 2.9.7 2.9.8

IE, pages don't load, buttons don't work, this varies from day to day as
Paypal changes the coding on each page. Unable to complete payments because
of this. Prior to this upgrade, IE works in all functions. IE version 5.1.7

Opera, will work but I don't like it. Opera v6.0.3

Netscape, have not tried it, but was advised by Paypal support that it has
problems also. Netscape v7.02

In iCab, eBay will lock up computer with large amounts of disk activity
and expand ram usage ( from 3-4mb to 40+ mb) when you have more that 3 tabs
open. This experience was with a PB1400/G3/466 upgrade and OS 8.6 9.1 and
an iMac/rev a, with OS8.6 and 256mb ram (with iMac its about 5 tabs open
before I get problems). With more than three tabs open, it can take up to 5
minutes of disk activity to open or close a tab.

When I created filters to cut down on some of the advertisements, ebay
started downloading 5k and 10k PDF files which were the ads I was trying
to block. I guess this is what push advertising is. Push the adds to the
viewer no mater what. I deleted my filters and deselected the PDF viewer
in iCab to stop this. No other web site I have been to has ever done this.
Prior to eBay v2.0 upgrade this was not a problem.

Its important to note that of all the browsers for the Mac and OS9 or
below, only iCab is still being upgraded. A good reason to support
shareware.

There are thousands if not millions of Mac users with G3 and G4 machines
running various flavors of OS 9 or below. These users do not want to
upgrade to OSX, some cannot upgrade, but their Mac's are fully capable of
surfing the web. There is no reason not to support these users.

This is not a problem where your machine is underpowered, this is a coding
problem. They are using HTML to preform functions as though it was an
application.

Please call Paypal customer service line and let them know you want them to
support Mac's and OS 9.

PayPal US toll-free at: 1-888-221-1161 or please call 1-402-935-2107.

Avrage hold time 30 minutes.

Hello, all, I'm hoping your joint expertise can puzzle this one out.

Our 3400's have always been hideously slow - to the point of choking
- on some websites such as ebay. In particular, https seems to kill
things.

In the end I found that using iCab turning off JS made ebay bearable.

But now, all of a sudden, I can't pay for anything with PayPal. I'm
not aware of any changes that I've made , but its been a few months
since I last tried. Any one else got this problem or is it just me?

What happens is that it fails at the last 'review and confirm' screen
- I click pay and it returns me to the same screen , or back to the
start of the payment process in Ebay. Doesn't make any difference
whether I start from ebay or paypal to do this. Looks like a JS
problem? Except that its still no good even with JS on.

Now I'm not sure if its either a problem with my particular machine,
or all old macs/browsers. I have tried IE 5 and Communcator 4.7 with
the same effect.

Any ideas anyone?

Airport setup

2004-09-30 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi. Bruce.

You should be able to control and configure the ABS from the wired or
wireless side. I think this link will tell you how to configure the ABS via
the Ethernet port http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58584

Apple's Base Station configuration software will run under OS 8.6 if you
use version 1.3.1. However some times it wont let you set all the settings.
Some choices may be greyed out.

Be sure to check out the Java utilities that let you configure the ABS.
With MRJ 2.1.1,and above, they will work on OS 8 or above.

I am at work so I don't have access to all my links, but you should be able
to find a link to the Java utilities from here:
http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/index.html
or here.
http://edge.mcs.drexel.edu/GICL/people/sevy/airport/

I have been playing with the Java utilities for a couple of days, and I
like them. The Airport Base Station Configurator sets the WEP to a HEX
password, so you may have to put 0x in the front of any password on the
PowerBook's. For the Graphite ABS your HEX key should be 10 charters plus
0x, for a total of 12.

You may want to be able to have the base station to dial out the modem
from the wired side, so check out the ABS Modem Utility here
http://www.catsincharge.com/programs/

I find it easer to control the dial out over letting it auto dial when I
launch a browser.

I wonder, are you going to try an put you 540 on Wireless??

Hopefully these lists have the answer...

I've just got a graphite ABS, and am thinking of doing my network like
this:

Connect my desktop G3 (OS X), my wired 540C (8.1) and my ABS to a
switch, wireless access to 5300 (8.6 wireless via an Orinico Silver)
and as of yet un-acquired other PB, then use the ABS for internet
access via the modem.

Can I run the airport base station control via the ethernet side or
does it have to be set up via wireless, and can I run that software
under 8.6?

Re: which Netscape for PB 1400 G3 OS 8.6??

2004-09-29 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all
Thanks for all your help with the 1400 for my Dad.

Glad its working. How does he like it?

Then I started from WirelessOS and installed the Orinoco 7.2 driver
and it worked perfectly with the YDI wireless Diamond card (P/N 012606/B).

You will like that card, if you ever upgrade your Dad to say a Wallstreet,
that card will work with the AirPort Software in OS 9. No more partitions.

Now I'm loading software and am wondering if I should go for Netscape
6.2.2 or if Netscape 7.02 would be better.
7.02 has some nice features (pop-up blocking and better security)
I was thinking that 7.02 would take more RAM (I've only got 64 MB) but
after installing 6.2 on the 1400 I see it takes 28 Mb which is the same
as 7.02 takes on the G3 Lombard.
Is there any reason not to use 7.02?

I would use the Netscape as a back up only. Or even IE 5 as a backup. Use
iCab as your main brouser. It will run in much smaller ram requirement. You
can add filters to stop ads, and control the java scrips that open those
pop up's.

iCab does not support CSS3 yet, and it does have problems with ebay and
paypal (those pages are resource hogs) on small memory machines, but you
should be able to use it in most cases.

The tabs feature is great for the small screen PowerBook.

I use it in about 95% of the sites I go to on a daily basis.

For email, I use Eudora 3.1. Very small ram requirement.Runs in OS 6.05 to
9.2.2.

Spellchecker for Eudora, I use Spell Tools.

Arocbat Reader, v4 or 5 your choice.

If you can find a copy of Ram Doubler 9, that works great in OS 8.6 and
will give you some more headroom.

And then if you have a copy of Claris Works/Apple Works 4 or 5, then that
should cover all other needs.

If you want to get fancy, you can configure a shareware dock, like A-Dock,
to do the same functions as the Launcher (or the Dock in OS X), and take up
less screen room. I have mine set to as small as possable, when the mouse
passes over it, it pops up.

Re: PB 1400 and internal ethernet card

2004-09-19 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi Andrew.

You can use a wireless card with a PowerBook 1400 and also have it set up
for wired Ethernet. It just takes a little different configuration to make
them coexist with each other.

If you have already installed software for a Internal or PCMCIA Ethernet
card, you will have to do a Clean Install of the OS to get the wireless
card to work. On PowerBooks that support Card Socket Services 2 (the
190,1400, 5300 and perhaps the 500 series) they will only support one
alternate network at a time. The wireless software installer writes data to
the System File (modifies the System File). If you do a Update of the OS,
this data is preserved (or supose to be). This is why you have to do a
Clean Install when you have wired Ethernet already on the PowerBook.

Once the Orinoco v7.2 software is installed, you should see the selection
of Orinoco instead of Alternate Ethernet in your AppleTalk Control Panel.
After completing the installation, shut down your PowerBook, insert the
wireless card, and restart your PowerBook. If all goes well, the driver
will load, the icon of the card will be green/white and the Control Strip
will show you have a card installed.

In my case, with my PB 1400, I have set up a compact flash card with a
clean install of the OS and the Wireless software. I use alias to link to
files on the hard disk. I also get longer battery life when using the flash
card, and have Eudora and iCab on the flash card.

A 250mb flash card will hold all of the software you need to get on line,
and have space left over. If you are realy tight and dont install things
like speech, then you might even be able to set one up with a 128mb flash
card. I know a 128mb is roomy with OS 8.1, as I set one up for my buddy/s
PB1400/117.

Instead of using a Compact Flash card to be a start up disk, you could
partition the hard disk to allow two System Folders, and use the Start Up
Disk Control Panel to choose between the two. Install wireless software on
one, and the wired software on the other.

Or you might be able to make a copy of the unmodified System file and
replace it with a modified copy of the one for wireless, and do the same
with the wired Ethernet. Replacing the System file requires you to restart
each time, so I don't see any advantage in doing this over the use of a
Compact Flash card, other than the cost of the card and adaptor.

Installing the Orinoco v7.2 wireless software can be tricky. This past
saturday, I installed the drivers on a flash card and the installer locked
up. I found that if I started up from a disk other than the flash card (the
one I wanted to install to), the installer ran fine. This was in OS 8.6.

Also, I have noticed that sometime the Orinoco control strip shows a X
through it even though the card is installed and working. This happened on
some when the PC Card is inserted after startup. It does not happen when
the card is inserted before startup.

About Ethernet cards, I use the Farallon PCMCIA Ethernet card, and I know
the installation of it's drivers will prevent the wireless software from
Asante, Skyline, and Orinoco from installing and working. I do not have a
internal Ethernet card, but it's drivers may stop the wireless drivers from
installing. If its is a Apple internal ethernet card then try removing the
card before you do a Clean Install. Try this only after you have done all
else, and see if it will let you install the wireless drivers with the card
removed.

One other note, the wireless card does not have to be in the PowerBook to
run the installer.

Please keep the list posted with you results about installing wireless on
you PB1400. I am sure there are others that are intrested.

Just remember, it is impossible to get a PB1400 to support wireless and

Does this mean I can't use a wireless card if there's an internal

Perhaps it's just a matter of having 2 extension sets defined, on for
internal ethernet and one for the PC card wireless.

Thanks again

Subject: Re: Wireless options for 1400 with G3 and OS 8.6?

2004-09-17 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello Andrew.
Glad to see you got the PB 1400 up and running for your dad.

I use the Proxim Skyline card and have some info that may help you.

The Proxim Skyline Wireless card works well with the Apple Airport Base
Station. The only problem you will have is you cannot configure WEP over
the wireless network unless you have the Apple Airport software running on
a Mac with a Airport card or a Compatible Lucent or YDL Wireless card.

I think you can configure the base station for WEP if you hook it up via a
Ethernet cable and use the Airport Base Station Software on a Mac without
Airport. This is a problem I need to look into this weekend. I also will be
trying some of the Java utilities to see how they work with older
PowerBooks.

Once the Base Station is configured for WEP then the Skyline card will have
no problems. Just when configuring your Base Station, be sure to write down
the HEX equivalent password, so you don't have any problems connecting with
other wireless software in the future. The Skyline will take the ASCII
password you put into the Base Station with out problem.

If you don't want WEP then no problems.

The Skyline card has very good software, a Mac like interface, and connects
without problem every time I use it. The slim antenna make it a good choice
if using a compact flash card to extend battery life, or memory.

Just remember, it is impossible to get a PB1400 to support wireless and
wired Ethernet at the same time. Has to do with card and socket services v2
(There are ways around this, if needed).

My FAQ has links to the Skyline Orinoco docs if you want to check them out.

This E-mail is sent from a PB1400 with a Skyline card and Sonnet G3
accelerator under OS 8.6.

Orinoco Driver for 1400/OS8.1

2004-08-31 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi Phil.

These are the current Orinoco driver links I have. Please note, the FTP
Waveland site has been down for about 3 days. I have a email into Proxim
support to find out if the site is down for good or not.

Also I have links for version 4 4.1 of the same software, just with a OEM
name in the installer, if you are unable to make it work with one of these
links let me know.

Also, go to Derek Miller's great site to see how to install wireless on
older PowerBook computer:

Re: Wireless PCMCIA cards

2004-08-24 Thread Kenneth Vann
The Proxim Skyline Card, model 473a, will work fine in a G3 Powerbook
running OS 8.1 to 9.2.2. Shareware or freeware drivers are needed to use in
OSX.

The 473a card is a 16-Bit PCMCIA card.

You can identify the 473a card by the FCC ID # PD5LMWP100 on the back label
of the card. Also it should have a sticker on the back of the antenna that
says Copyright 2000, Proxim Inc.

Not all Skyline cards are Mac compatible. The majority of Skyline cards on
eBay are not mac compatable. They use a different chip set and drivers are
only available for Windows computers. Before you buy off eBay, check with
the seller for the FCC id number.

For a vendor who has them new in the box, check out this link. Less than
$20.00.

http://www.emicrox.com/eShop/product.aspx?advanced=1cid=10011attr=Wireless+Net

I have bought from them before, and have no complaints.

Re: PRAM Batteries for PB 1400

2004-08-03 Thread Kenneth Vann
New PRAM batteries can be had new for less than $20.00 each with the wiring
already made up. http://www.powerbookguy.com/1400.html

The PB 1400 takes eithor 1 or 2 PRAM batteries, depending on your model.
Remove the expansion bay cd rom/floppy and the main battery, look up into
the top of the computer and you will see eithor 1 or 2 black plastic parts,
this is the PRAM batteries. They are under these plastic covers.

A pain to change, but it can be done. I have done two. My first, I bought
the battery from a Apple dealer, $50.00+ each, my second, I bought the
batterys from powerbookguy.com.

Live and learn.

Ken Vann

PRAM batteries for the PowerBook 1400 are quite costly. Complete kits,
including a tool and instruction, are available from:

Wireless PC Card Compatability List

2004-06-27 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All, I have a request.

Listers who have Powerbook's which were not made for Apple's built in
Airport card, how about sending me information on the wireless PC card you
use.

I want to build a list of cards that are copies or clones of the
Lucent/Agree/Orinoco/Proxim cards that will work in older Mac's. I want to
be able to identify compatability by FCC ID number, and eliminate guesswork
when trying to purchase a new or used card.

If someone knows of such a list, or already has one, please point me to it.

Please follow the format of the Diamond card I listed below. Be sure to
include the FCC ID # off the card and what software you use (OS and
software to control the card). With the FCC ID #, I can look up the card
manufacturer and fill in missing information.

FCC id look up page: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

It's possible that cards with different names, sold in different markets,
or private branded cards, will have the same FCC ID # and thus be supported
by the Airport or Orinoco software.

Please send all PC card information to me direct. In about 30-60 days I
hope to have a list of compatible cards for use on older Macs.

PC Card Information Example:

Card Name: Diamond Card
Web site: www.ydi.com
Vendor: YDI Wireless
Vendor Address: 8000 Lee Highway, Falls Church VA 22024
Vendor Phone: 703-205-0600
Vendor Part #: 012606/B
FCC ID #NM5-A2400S
Description: 16-Bit (PCMCIA), 128 Encryption, Rom#8.52
Compatible Drivers Under OS 8.x - 9.x: Yes, Orinoco
Compatible With Airport Drivers under OS 9.x: Yes, (Tested 2.0.2 2.0.4)
Compatible Drivers under OSX: Not Known
Compatible With Airport Drivers Under OSX: Not Known

Thanks to all.

cardbus compatible but I know that 3400c is. If there is anyone out
there who did get their 5300 working wireless, I'd love to hear about it.

Meanwhile, can anyone suggest to me what model pcmcia cards are best or
most suitable. (ie less issues with drivers, installation etc..)

thanks

~hasanito

Hello. If you can get them, try the Skyline cards by Proxim Wireless.
The software seems to work the best on older computers.

This link is to the retailers web site that has the Proxim Skyline cards
new in box for US $19.95. They shipped to me in 5 days(US) and the software
is on cd in both windows and mac format. Supports OS 7.5.5 through OS 9.1,
Powerbook 190 through G3.

They may ship international.

Problems with Wireless on PB 1400 (Update)

2004-05-16 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello. I have been away from my email for about two weeks. Too much work in
my life. However all of you which are having problems with wireless should
review the following which I sent some time back to the list.

I bet some of the problems are due because, at some time, you had a wired
ethernet card and its software installed on the PB1400. Card and Socket
Services v2 will trip you up every time.

I have used the Skyline and Orinoco cards and software. While the Skyline
has a lot more Mac Like interface, the Orinoco will work. I have only used
the Orinoco on a Wallstreet as I saw no need to use it on my PB1400 once I
bought the Skyline Cards. However, others have used the Orinoco software on
PB 1400 with out problems. Check out this link:
http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

I hope this helps. If you need more information into how I fixed my
problem, email me direct.

Ken Vann

Best single URL I've found: http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

Hello all. I have my PB1400 up on wireless. The link above is great, but
some extra things you need to know about. It took me about a year of
trying different things until I was sucesful.

1) If you have a earler powerbook that uses Card and Socket Services 2, (I
beleave the 190, 1400 5300 only) then you can only support one alternate
ethernet network at a time. My PB 1400 supports only Localtalk, IR-Talk,
and only one ethernet at a time. If you install software for a PCMCIA
ethernet card, then remove the software and install wireless software, it
wont work on wireless. You can remove the wireless software and reinstall
the ethernet software and your PCMCIA ethernet card will work again. If
you install software for a diferent brand of PCMCIA ethernet card, having
removed the first brand of PCMCIA ethernet card software, the second card
and software wont work.

With Card Socket Services (CSS2), The installers write data to the
system file, and the only way to get it to change is to clean install the
OS. Update the OS won't do it. A special thanks goes out to Asante tech
suport for this information. I purchased one of there cards, and they
refunded my money when I could not get it to coexist with wired ethernet.
There is a workaround listed below for this problem.

2) The Appletalk Control Panel in my Powerbook 1400 has the folowing
selections, Remote Only, Infrared (IR Talk), Modem/Printer Port and
Alternet Ethernet. If you have installed a version of AOL dial up
software, you will also have a listing for AOL Link Enhanced. This AOL
software does not affect your ability to add wireless.

3) Not every configuration of software, OS and wireless cards will work. I
was unable to get the software from Proxim/Orinoco for Lucent based cards
to work on my PB1400. The installer would only install the installer log
and nothing else. I tried to manual install the componets, and all it did
was lock up my PB1400. The best guru at my local Mac User Group could not
figure it out, even with a identical PB1400 up on the Proxim software
using a Dell wireless card connecting to the user group wireless network.

4) Try a different card using a Prism2 chipset. The Faralon brand of
Skyline cards, Proxim brand of Skyline cards (Proxim accuired these from
Faralon), and the MacWireless cards all use this chipset. I dont know what
chipset the Asante cards use, so email their tech support if you need to
know. Both the Faralon and Proxim brand of Skyline cards are out of
production, so shop around to find them. Asante and Macwireless are in
production and available.

5) The people who started Macwireless are former Faralon employees. Try
their software and see if it fixes your problem. This tip from Macwireless
Tech Suport.

6) Workaround for both wireless and wired ethernet. I have set up two
PB1400 with wireless and wired ethernet using the following workaround.
Partition your hard drive into 2 volumes and intall system software on
each volume. One partition suports wired ethernet, the other you install
the wireless software. Switch back and forth as you need using the Startup
Disk Control Panel.

Or use a Compact Flash card as a start up disk with the wireless software
installed and keep your hard disk set up with the ethernet wired software.

If you don't need or don't want wired ethernet capbility, then you do not
have to partition your drive, just try a card and software based on the
Prism chipset.

7) Details on PB1400 setup expiernce.
On one PB1400/117, System 8.1, 16mb ram 750mb hard disk, and Faralon
PCMCIA Wired Ethernet Card. I used a Viking 128mb compact flash card with
OS 8.1 and the Skyline v3 drivers. Used the Proxim version of the Skyline
card. Worked great.

On the other PB1400, System 8.6, Sonnet G3/466, and Faralon PCMCIA Wired
Ethernet Card. I use a 1gb Viking compact flash card, with OS 9.1 and
Skyline v3 drivers. Used the Proxim version of the Skyline card. Worked
great.

On both of these machines I use the Proxim version of the Skyline card

Help with syquest 44

2004-05-07 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. This is off topic but I am in a jam.

I have done away with my external syquest 44 cartrage drive that I used to
use on my PB 1400. I gave away the drives to a good home.

Now I find that I have one syquest cartridge that I did not back up before
I got rid of drives.

If anyone is still using a Syquest 44 drive, and can take my data of this
cartridge and burn it on a cd, please contact me off list.

I am in Virginia Beach VA, but will ship and pay for your cost.

What do people think of the SkyLine software?

2004-04-08 Thread Kenneth Vann
What do people think of the SkyLine software?

I was thinking about adding a comparison of the software and cards to
my FAQ. Maybe I'll pick up a SkyLine card at some point and do an
Apples-to-Apples comparison. ;-)

Peace,
Drew

That would be great if you could do a report and post to your FAQ here. I
would also be intrested if anyone has had the SlyLine card working under
OSX (slightly off topic), or a compairson to the MacWireless software. I
have been told that MacWireless was formed by former employees of Faralon,
the origional developer of the SkyLine card.

I have used both the Orinoco and the SkyLine v3.1 software the SkyLine is
much easer to configure that the Orinoco. I have not used the Airport
software so no compairson available.

I helped a friend configure a Orinoco Gold card ($89.00 @ CDW, She did not
ask me before she purchased) and it is NOT rock solid reliable. With a
clean install of OS 9.1 on a Wallstreet, she must have the card inserted
for startup. She still can not get it to see her Belkin wirellss router at
home, but I think that is a configuration problem. When ejecting and
reinserting the card, computer sees card but refused to connect to my card.
Restart and all is well. Connected her laptop to my PB1400 with no problem
when I got it working.

I use v3.1 of the skyline software and it works great. I run it on a
compact flash card, with OS 9.1 on a PB 1400 with Sonnet g3. Its interface
window is much less confusing that the Orinoco. I have set up the same card
on OS 8.1 and OS8.6 with no problem, other that making sure that software
for wired ethernet had not been installed. This problem is specific to
those PowerBooks which use Card and Socket Services v2. (I beleave the 190,
1400 5300 only)

Proxim has a beta version of the SkyLine software specific to OS 9.1
posted, but its not likely its still being developed. When I tried it this
weekend, I froze my PB1400 when the computer started up with the card
removed. Froze when ejected, and just messed with my OS so much I nuked and
paved the CF card and started from scratch.

Farallon SkyLINE Wireless PC Card and 1400

2004-03-16 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello. It sounds like the skyline software is bad. The fuzzy images of the
card icon is the key.

What version of the skyline software are you using?

In the Appletalk control panel did you select Alternet Ethernet?

Did you run the installer or just drop the bits into the system folder? Run
the installer, deinstall the software, restart OS, then run the installer
again, restart again and try card.

The PB 1400 uses Card Socket services v2.1 and requires that only one
ethernet software be installed. If you have ever installed software for a
wired ethernet card, this could be your problem. To fix this do a clean
install of the OS, not an update.

Can you do a clean install of the OS and then a clean install of the software?

I have a Proxim version of the Skyline card running on OS 9.1/64mb ram and
another one on OS 8.1/16mb ram. Runs well without problem. Uning Skyline
software v3. Both cards are on a PB 1400

Ken Vann

Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Thanks

Re: Wireless 190 / 5300

2004-02-25 Thread Kenneth Vann

I'm very interested in chasing any info on methods of making
a 190 or 5300 go wireless. I'd much appreciate any leads or tips!

There are a few pages online dealing with doing this with a 1400, and at
least one that mentions the 190 in the same breath. Fwiw, I haven't had
any luck with OS 8.1, though some reportedly have. 8.6 9.1 have yielded
better (aka, great) results, though slower performance overall running
the newer OS on outdated processors.

Have you tried the software Mach Speed Control

It is much more stable on my Sonnet G3/466 PB1400, than the origional

233mhz. Its not a cureall, but is a improvement for my machine.

I'm restarting an old thread started by Jonathan Metts, which I read in the
December archives.

I too have been having a serious problem with system freezes and random
program crashes with the Sonnet cache enabler loaded. As with Metts'
machine, mine starts up fine and even works okay for a little while if I
haven't used in in a couple days...but then, right when I get rolling,
something crashes or the whole system freezes and I have to reboot.

Without the cache enabled, the 1400 is surprisingly stable. I recently
installed 9.2.2, which seems to have increased stability, but without that
L2 cache, everything is just too slow.

I have tried all versions of the Sonnet cache enable 1.x through 2.x. I
tried PowerLogix and NuPowr controllers, but I couldn't boot with either.
I'm using good RAM...Is this merely a failure of the L2 cache? Has anyone
had this problem and recovered from it?

I've been struggling with this for months now, and I'm on the verge of
giving up and getting a Lombard or something, which is a shame because this
1400 could be truly an acceptable and low-cost machine.

Subject: Interesting battery issues

2004-02-02 Thread Kenneth Vann
Yes it took me at least 6 times to bring my battery up from 20 min to about
1 1/2 hour.
By the way, I set up a compact flash card just to do batteries. When it
does a hard shutdown, it only takes a minute for it to go through Disk
First Aid and be up and running.

By the way, I drool over you PB1400 users that get 2hours plus out of your
batteries. Even the new batteries (third party company) are only good for
about 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 hours. Of course, I dont do lite computing.

I downloaded battery amnesia, and ran it for the first time tonight, only
for the computer to shut down for lack of energy at %83 discharge. Is
this normal?

fixing up a pb 1400c

Subject: fixing up a pb 1400c
From: Denny Phelps [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, I'm new to this list so I hope my questions aren't too annoying, but I
could use a little advice.
I just got a 1400c (117 mhz) and I'm wondering about a couple things.

Hello. I have a PB1400c/166 I have upgraded over the last year.
Some suggestions for future upgrades:

Max out the ram. Use RamDoubler 9. OS 9.1 seems to be faster than OS 8.6.

Sonnet G3/466 upgrade, or NewPower acclerator (on ebay or LEM swap list).
The Sonnet G3/466 boost the bus speed from 33 to 66mhz. If you do get an
Sonnet G3 upgrade card, try this extension from http://www.x.r8.com/updates
Mach Speed Control v1.4.3. I use this in both OS 8.6 9.1. The Sonnet
extension does not work well with OS 8.6 on my PB1400. Also, the Mach Speed
Control let me boost the L2 Secondary Cache from 186mhz to 233mhz with no
problems. The default setting with the Sonnet extension is 186mhz.

24 Speed CD Rom to replace 12 speed (if you have one)(on ebay or Wagnermedia)
PCMCIA Compact Flash Card as a hard disk or virtual memory storage.
PCMCIA Ethernet Card (I use a Faralon)
PCMCIA Wireless Card ( I am testing a Skyline (old Faralon) by Proxim.)
Main Battery Backup Battery available at Wagnermedia (new avalable for
less than $50 $15)

The 1400c you have, has the better screen. I use mine every day.

As for your track pad, Wagnermedia or Microdoc USA can help you with
repairs. Parts are still available. An ADB mouse can help until you get the
trackpad repaired. If you have the trackpad repaired, be sure to replace
the backup battery at the same time. You have to take it out to replace the
trackpad. Your track pad could be giving you problems because its dirty,
bad software, or because the 117mhz processer is overtaxed. Have you
installed a new OS yet?

Choosing software can also make the PB faster. iCab, Eudora Lite, BBEdit
Lite, Claris Works 4, Battery Amnesia (to break the memory on your old
battery), Power Print, ect can help out with your speed problem until you
are ready for a upgrade card.

With a little time you could find all of these upgrades at a resonable cost
and turn you PB 1400 into a workhorse.

Contact me off list for more on what I did to my PB 1400.

Powerbook 1400 back up batteries.

2003-10-21 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello all. I have a question for the expierence powerbook repair persons on
this list.

I have a Powerbook 1400 with the following problem: When in sleep mode,
with out ac adaptor pluged in, if I change the main battery, the blinking
led light will go dim. When a fresh main battery is reinstalled, the led
lignt returns to full brightness but the powerbook will not wake up from
sleep.

Please note: the computer does not lose date, time or mouse settings.

The owners manual said I should be able to change main batteries when in
sleep mode.

A service tech friend said that with 6 years of age on the backup battery,
I should change it to start with. Sounds relible to me.

I want to replace the backup battery. A dealer looked it up and said I need
one part number 922-2429 backup battery. Now as I get ready to install, I
find there are two batteries. One under the left palm rest, identified as
922-2429, one under the right palm rest, part number unknown.

The copy of the apple service pdf I have for the Powerbook 1400 shows the
battery under the left palm rest, but not the one under the right palm
rest. If you have a Powerbook 1400, you can see the batteries if you remove
the main battery and the floppy drive. They are attachet to the underside
of the upper case.

I found a tech note on apple web site that list two part numbers for
Powerbook 1400 batteries. Tech note #11751. System battery 922-2420, Backup
battery 922-2429.

In another tech note #16168, I find a battery listed by service part number
922-3078, also known as M4507 M4915 I think that this is the main 9.6v
Nimh battery.

So now I am totaly confused. I did a Goole search for 922-2420 and come up
with a reference for a 9v Nimh battery at a third party battery company.

Are the batteries under the palm rest both the same? Are they both 922-2429?

Thanks for all you help.

You need a cable called a PrintPack adapter, it's actually not just
a plain cable adapter but there's some logic and buffering in the
cable, too. Ebay will likely be the only place to find the old ones.
They used to be made by a company called GDT and it's likely this

I've had one of these k56flex Slupra PCcard modems for years! Since
before Slupra went bellyup anyway. Slupra sure made fine modems. :-)

Digging through my archives I don't find the versions you mentioned. The
updaters I do have are v2.081-05 and v2.200-01 (as one archive) which I
temporarily put here:

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/Supra_PCCard_V.90_Updater.hqx

I haven't enough web space to keep it there longer than a week or two. If
someone out there knows a place that can keep it (and other similar
items!) up permanantly I'd be obliged for the info. I'll be glad to
forward this file if only I had a clue where.

Supra PCMCIA Modem Upgrades.

2003-08-03 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello everyone. I need some help with a Supra PC Card Modem. I have one I
use in my PowerBook 1400 and I suspect it is 56k Flex only. The Diamond
Multimedia site no longer has any support information or files. I am
wondering if any one has one of these and can tell me if it can be flashed
to v90? If so does anyone have the program to flash the roms in the card to
v90. Below is listed the results when I sent the modem the various ati 1-4
comands. I am able to connect to my ISP and use the fax feature (Thanks to
Value Fax shareware). My ISP no longer supports 56k flex, so a v90 upgrade
would be best.

I though about purchasing a new v90 or v92 PC Card Modem, but most of the
ones at local store are Winmodems (software only) and not true modems. I
know Zoom makes some PC card modems with Mac software bundled in the
package for v90 and v92 but they are not available local.

Am I just wasting my time trying to upgrade the flash rom (if so equiped)
in this Supra modem?

Should I just buy a new modem?

All help will be appreciated.

Slupra PC Card Modem V90 upgrade

2003-08-03 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello Everyone. I have found more information on the upgrade for the flash
rom for the Supra PC Card Modem. I went to webarchive.org and found this
information

http://web.archive.org/web/19981205232856/www.supra.com/products/firmware/56k/56
macfirmware.html

From what it says i need a the flash file that will upgrade the roms from
v1.000-00 to v2.061-03

The name of the file is Supra56KPCCardFlasher.sea.hqx and their were at
least two versions of it.

The file that I need is dated 5/19/98.

If someone has the flasher to version 1.120-05 dated 12/14/97 then that
would be a step in the right direction.

All my searching sends me back to dead web pages as Supra and Diamond
Multimetia are not in business any more.

I do have some ccl's for this modem and it currentely works, but at a lower
speed.

Please contact me direct.

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Re: Power Book 1400 PCMCIA Cards

2003-07-23 Thread Kenneth Vann
I would like to thank everyone who sent me info on using the compact flash
and smart media cards in a Powerbook 1400.

I found them priced for as little as $3.00 and up.

If any one is intrested, i desided to purchase them from Walmart because of
their return policy. Here is what they cost.

Viking SSFDC/ADAPT (Smart Media Adaptor) $27.92

Viking CF128M 128 MB CompactFlash Card for $32.87

Viking CF-ADAPT (Compact Flash Adaptor) for$18.98

I dont know if one brand is better than another, but with the return
policy, I dont think I will go wrong.

I have an old Richo digital camera that takes Smart Media cards, so I have
plenty for now.

As a side note, beside modems, ethernet and the above cards, what else are
the readers of this list using in their PCMCIA slot? What have you found
handy.

I take my powerbook to work. The primary use my co-workers use there
laptops for is to play microsoft solitare. They still think the mac is a
toy.

Power Book 1400 PCMCIA Cards

2003-07-21 Thread Kenneth Vann
From: Brian [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: neat image cataloger for older macs

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3618789921

I use ImageAXS 4.1 on my 1400, it's pretty handy. One of my main
uses for the 1400 is to offload images from my digital camera when
I'm on trips, via PCMCIA CF and smartmedia adapters (who needs USB??
this is a better solution...)

Hello. I have just got a PB1400 and love it. Can you give me more
information on the brand and type of PCMCIA cards you use to offload images
from your digital camera?

Do you have the manfactures web site for these cards?

Thank you

Ken Vann
