PowerBook 3400 IrDA to Kodak picture Kiosk?

2006-02-04 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

Has anyone here every managed to send pictures via the infrared port
from a PowerBook 3400 to a Kodak digital picture kiosk at a photo lab?
I know of a nearby store with one that has Infrared capability for
tranfering from camera phones and I'm really curiouse about whether I
could do this with my PowerBook...and just how I would do it.

Reading a burned 700MB capacity CD R on a PowerBook 3400

2006-02-03 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

I have some stuff I burned to 650MB CD Rs and those disks read fine in
the 6x drive I got with my PB3400

However I have not been able to use 700MB capacity CD R's to make disks
for use in the 3400's CD ROM drive. I've tried Fujifilm, Verbatim, and TDK.

I'm aware that there are also 12x and 20x CD ROM drives that work in the
3400's expantion bay and was wondering: are either the 12x or 20x drives
capable of reading files burned to 700MB capacity CD Rs? I'm guessing
that the 6x one just can't handle it and wondered if maybe the 12x or
20x used a little newer hardware that might be more compatible?

no. Well, at least the couple I've got give a red error light when you
stick one in any LiIon packs. Anyone have any other result?

Interestingly, there's an eBay vendor who regularly sells the VST5000

Re: PB 3400 Battery Question

2006-01-30 Thread Roger Volk

Justin,

With the machines setting unused for some time the PRAM batteries
are probably on their last legs, having just delt with a similar issue
myself. The Main batteries for these machines are readily available New
and from listmembers. I have several if you're interested, contact me
off list. The machine is fairly easy to dismantle and most parts are
readily available from list members. Recommend you subscribe to the Low
End Mac list also.

OK, please excuse my revealed ignorance in asking this question

me down an entire new research path.)

I have obtained two Powerbook 3400's, which between the two of them
should make one fine, working machine. I have discovered what is more
than likely already obvious to most of you: the batteries in both of
them are now suitable to be fine paperweights.

My question is in a few parts: 1) What exactly is the difference
between Lithion Ion and "NiMh"(?) batteries, and which would these
(presumeadly) orginal batteries that I have be? 2) Is there any way of
salvadging these -- bringing them back to any kind of useable life? 3)
Is there a modern equivalent/replacemet option for these? 4) or,
should I simply get used to the idea of being tethered to the wall
with this ridiculous brick right in the middle of the power cord?

Great, helpful answers as always, thanks Dan.

I'll go thru my batts and check them out !

The G3/3500/Kanga battery is noticably heavier than the 3400 battery and
has a higher capacity. I've used G3 batteries in 3400s and they work fine.

If given a choice, I'd surely opt for a battery labeled for the G3, both
higher cap _and_ almost certainly newer as well.

Lol !

Nice one Dan.

Interested in the higher capacity of the 3500 battery, as I've never had any
issues charging their batts in my 3400 charger, so I must have one of the
later ones.

Btw - is it just me or were these the best batts Apple ever made - I'm still
getting good life out of most of these that I see.

I actually found a seller on ebay who is listing unused unopened
batteries for the 3400 and 3500 powerbooks with $7.99 BINs (s/h is
another $7..you might be able to work something out if you get more than
one though you'd want to contact the seller before taking the BIN). If
you do a search on PowerBook 3400 Battery in the next 20 hours you
should get one of these auctions at the top of your search.

The following is something I remember from asking a friend of mine.

Anyway... the charge held depends on the mAh rating on the battery...
the higher it is the longer the battery will go... I don't know the
rating on Apple's battery(as far as I can tell it's not listed anywhere
on it)

Lithium Ion Batteries are what shipped with the 3400. They don't
develope memories and start holding lesser charges real quick...but they
do eventually stop working once they've been used a lot.

NiMH batteries can be used in the 3400 but they develope memories if you
don't let them drain all the way before recharging They also can't
be used for as many charge/drain cycles as Lithium Ion batteries but
they do have one advantage At least with older hardware where new
batteries are hard to find... from what I'm told: typically it is
possible to break open NiMH battery packs and rebuild them with new
cells Lithium Ion batteries use custom cells that aren't easily
replaced.

I've found both types for the 3400 through froogle...
though no where near as cheap as those ones I found on ebay.(but I
should mention that most of the ones I found through froogle apear to
have a much better warranty)... if you look on froogle make sure you're
buying the main battery pack and not the pram batteryand always note
the type and the mAh before getting deceved by what looks like a good price.

You're in luck then, because, relatively speaking, the 5300/3400/Kanga
batteries are the easiest & cheapest to find. Any Powerbook battery previous to
it
(Duo, 1xx, 500-series) are hard to find, not cheap when you do, and can be very
iffy with the charge (especially the 500-series). And 1400 batteries are
expensive; 2400c batteries are cheap and easy to find though.

>My question is in a few parts: 1) What exactly is the difference
>between Lithion Ion and "NiMh"(?) batteries, and which would these

I am sure some better qualified list member can delve into the specifics of
NiMH (Nickell-Metal Hydride) batteries and Li-Ion batteries, and how to rebuld
them. I can tell you, as mentioned above, that they are easy + relatively
cheap to find in good condition.

You can tell if the batteries are original very easily; the batteries should
be Li-Ion, and say "3400 series" on them. If they are NiMH, they are not OE
for thr Powerbook 3400c. They are in fact for the Powerbook 5300 series. They
can work in the 3400c, but the charge will not be nearly as good as one from
the
Li-Ion batteries.

There was another battery of that same style, for the Kanga. It will say
"Powerbook G3" on it; they are a more advanced Li-Ion than the 3400c batteries;
I
*think* they work in the 340c as well.

PB 3400 Battery Question

2006-01-27 Thread Justin Teague
OK, please excuse my revealed ignorance in asking this question
because despite collecting low-end macs for some time now, I have
recently started dabbling in portables. I've searched the archives to
no avail. (I did see a lot of "pram" entries though, which has lead
me down an entire new research path.)

Right you are Malcolm. Ok, here's more info than any of y'all really
wanted to know . . .

VST (now SmartDisk) made at least three versions of the 190/5300/3400
chargers. The first is for NiMH 190/5300 batteries only, the "VST Charger
5000" (SCH5000), with the 190/5300-style power input socket only. For the
PowerBook 3400 VST produced a new model, the "VST Charger 3400" (SCH3400)
which can charge the 3400's lithium batteries along with the older NiMH
packs, and it added as well a second power socket for the 3400's power
supply plug. With the arrival of the 3500 VST produced a new revision of
the SCH3400 charger which can handle charging the higher capacity Kanga
batteries. Confusingly, the 3500-capable model carries the same "VST
Charger 3400" (SCH3400) model name. I can't recall if there is any
externally marked revision number difference, might be, been awhile :-P
However, I do recall that the earlier rev SCH3400 cannot charge Kanga
batteries.

Somewhere I have another make charger, 190/5300-only IIRC, might be
Absolute-brand come to think of it . . .

I've never ever seen any standalone charger for 2400 batteries, but maybe
I missed it.

95% sure that I have a VST one and that it uses either the normal 5300/190
or the normal 3400 adapter.

I've a vague feeling that this has been discussed on the list before a
couple of years ago and we decided that there were several distinct
chargers.

The VST battery charger - the one always seen on Ebay for $5 or $10 -
requires the use of the AC adapter from the 5300/190 Powerbook to charges
5300/190
NiMH batteries. Using it to charge 3400c batteries requires the use of the
seldom-seen internal AC adapter for the 3400c. The internal AC adapter module
has
two ports on the outside: one for the 2-prong AC cord, and a small port for a
cord that runs from the module to the VST battery charger.

Correct me if I am mistaken, anyone...

Now, Absolute made a battery charger that charges 5300/190 NiMH, and 3400c
Li-Ion battery by itself; it uses its own AC adapter.

An external charger for the 2400c was never offered

IIRC it will run 7.6.1 with an enabler, I think that's what they originally
shipped with.

Re: 7.6 on a 3400?

2006-01-24 Thread John Kneeland
It needs the PowerBook 3400 enabler, which was included with the
PB3400's original install disc. It also needs a special 3400-series
version of 7.6.1, which can be found buried on Apple's server
somewhere.

This should help you if the 3400 is anything like the 190/5300.

To remove the shielding, first you need to remove the logic board, and
then you should notice some silver tabs sticking through on the bottom
of it, around the edges of the shielding. Bend these tabs to where
they're straight and remove the shielding. To replace the shielding,
line up the tabs, press them through and bend them down.

Hope this helps,
Caleb

There is a VST one for the 3400/5300/190, but you need a mains adapter for
it, charges 2 batts. You can use either the 5300/190 or the 3400 adapter on
the one I have.

PowerBook 3400 Hard drive compatibility

2006-01-18 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

I just bought my first PowerBook... it's a PowerBook 3400 and I'd like
to replace the 2GB drive with something bigger sometime in the next
month or two I was thinking 40GB...probably overkill...but that's
never stopped me before. :-)

Would this Seagate be likely to work?

<http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148085>

If that isn't going to work... would you know of any 40GB drives that
would and could be bought new rather than used?...I'm trying to find one
that has lower power consumption.

Also, on LEM's page for the 3400 it says that anything bigger than 3GB
will preclude the SCSI disk mode that just means I can't use PB as a
hard drive on a desktop computer and doesn't mean I can't hook up
external disk drives if I use an internal drive bigger than 3GB right?

Thank you.

Will CISCO Aironet 340 wireless card work on 3400 running OS 8.6?

2005-08-31 Thread Gary F. Daught
Greetings. I am looking to pick up a 16-bit 802.11b wireless PC card
for my PowerBook 3400c (200MHz version running OS 8.6). I have an
opportunity to get a CISCO Aironet 340 card at a great price. But I
am trying to determine if it will work with my configuration.

Does anyone on the list have experience with this card on a pre-G3
machine? The documentation I have found online, including CISCO's own
documentation refers only to G3 and G4 machines running OS 9.2.x and
up. I don't want to risk the purchase without a clear YES IT WILL WORK.

Thanks for your assistance.

I think you are correct.

Its not exactly like that. There is 7.6 and 7.6.1 for the 3400.
But it is right, it is a silgtly different 7.6.

In the download area for alder amcs at apple.com you can
download the spezial files for the 3400.

It took me a year to get a german 7.6.1 for mine ;)

Looks like there might be some help for me out there :-)

Hi Manfred,

that's exactly what I found out as well: e.g. that *there is* a special
7.6

install CD just made for the 3400. - I even had a somebody sell it to me
(the guy said he was sure that the CD was originally from his 3400!!!) but
heck it still doesn't work :-/

I will try the things you wrote down on your website...maybe it will
help

Buffalo WIFI PCMCIA Card on a 3400 and hawking HWR54G Router

2005-08-28 Thread George Mogiljansky

hello,
I sprung for a Buffalo card (just like the one on
K.Vann's site) but the wireless router I got to use it
with for next to nothing - Hawking HWR54G - doesn't
work. Any advice welcome.

The install wizard would freeze and stall. I upgraded
the firmware using a G4 Mac and Jaguar (should I try
again using a Windows machine?) but now I can't even
access install wizard.

Thanks
George

Install 7.6 on Powerbook 3400 doesnt work

2005-08-25 Thread Paxson

Hi @ll,

I'm desperatly trying to install MacOS 7.6 on my old powerbook 3400 (144MB
RAM/2GB/12xCD)..

At the moment there are 3 Partitions (all ~700 MB). One of the partions ist
hfs+ with an installed MacOS 8.6 which is working fine and stable all the
time!!!

Now I am trying to install MacOS 7.6 on one partition (which is HFS, *not*
HFS+)...but I can't get it to work!!...I even went and got an original MacOS
7.6-Install-CD, that was specifically from an Powerbook 3400...But I still
can't get it to work.

When I try to boot of the CD or try open the Installer (within the 8.6), I
just get a message like "this software was not made for this
computer...bla,bla,bla..".

I even tried and swapped MachID (with MachID-Wanna-Be Control Panel), but
that still doesn't work. I also tried to apply the specific 7.6.1-Update
especially for the 3400's (after faking the MacID and installing 7.6 and the
immediatly installing the 3400-7.6.1-Update...

Can anybody help ?! Anybody have a hint ?!

Puzzled

HD and other Media Upgrades - Was: Max HD for 3400

2005-06-21 Thread ACFX44501

>While I do not have the "largest, fastest HD," a Hitachi 40-GB 5400-
>RPM drive works well in one of my PowerBook 3400c's.

I've been putting Samsung HDs (super-quiet, super-cool FDB bearings) in
my PowerBooks, recently. Mainly old "decommissioned" Wallstreet IIs,
which came from the various National Labs, but 3400s and 3500s are good
candidates for significant upgrades, too. Definitely for a 3500 (Kanga)
as it is quite powerful (250 MHz G3) for its small size (same size as a
3400), and the Cardbus modification works well for it and the 3400.

Newegg.com seems to have pretty good prices on those Samsung drives, and
low or no tax, and low or no shipping.

The Wallstreets can really use the storage now, as most came with 6 GB
drives, and Panther takes up so much of that.

I recently acquired a high-end Lombard (400 MHz, built-in DVD decoder,
DVD-CD drive), and it is definitely going to get at least a 40 GB Samsung
as it is the easiest to interchange, operationally speaking, between 9
and X as Xpostfacto is not required. 9.2.2 for anything which requires
the on-board DVD player, and 10.3.9 for anything which requires X-based
DVD authoring tools.

Incidentally, DVD/CD-ROM-R-RWs with +/- and 2-layer write and read are
now affordable, about $139, and in their 12.7mm thickness variation they
are perfect for transplantation to a Lombard/Pismo optical bay, or an MCE
Wallstreet optical bay, although DVD playback on a Wallstreet is nothing
to write home about.

Re: reformatting a 3400

2005-06-17 Thread Fluxstringer

I'm having trouble with my 3400's HD. It is running
9.1. From time to time it clearly gets stuck in some
area during various searches. You can hear a
repetitive chatter (like angry squirrels) as it tries
to retrieve the info, but than that, the machine is
functioning agreeably.

I have run Norton DiskDoctor and does not find disk
problems but it does find "cross linked files." It
seems unable to correct them because at some point
while it is doing its job, you hear the troubled
access "squirrel" noise for a while than Norton
reports all is OK.

I have run TechTools 3 and it doesn't find file
problems but in the surface check, it finds "?disk
damage, ? run repair?" It says, bad sectors were
found. It wants to "map them out" but it doesn't,
saying: "sometimes the OS will occupy some space that
it cannot enter to repair!"

I have removed all data and trased both "system and
finder" from the machine thinking a good reformatting
might correct or at least re map the bad sectors. My
question is: will Apple's "DiskSetup" do the job of a
low level format, or is there another idea, or (I
really can't afford this) is it time for a new HD?

_

This in my opinion would be a VERY good time to backup all data in
any way that you have available and to start shopping for a
replacement Hard Drive.

Try getting on the swap list . The cost wont be so bad.

Years ago I ignored grinding HD noises for months trying to repair
them with software. But physical hardware damage just keeps getting
worse.
My HD dies taking a lot of hours work with it.

That will be good enough for OS 9.1, if you're inclined to go that
route. The only caveat is that there will be times when you'll have to
rely on VM. What would really do well for you would be to find a copy
of RAM Doubler 9.

I've heard this is really good. Haven't sniffed around for this yet
and haven't noticed any limits yet. VM is turned off BTW.

In OS 8.6, you'll have no problems whatsoever.

I'm very interested in the notion of running OSX, but it seems like
the RAM would be pretty skimpy for that hungry beast(?)

To even consider OS X, you need to max out the RAM. It will be slow,
but it will run. The main drawback is that the 603e just can't drive
the OS X GUI very well.

It's a chore for the iMac, so I can imagine. ;)

What is max RAM expansion on the 3400c/200MHz?

You can add a 128MB RAM card, for a maximum of 144 MB.

I believe the HD is only 3GB, so that's a limit too.

Just curious, but do you have a link for the hack? I LOVE OSX!

Don't even think about OS X with that small of a hard drive. The link
for the hack is http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/.

Here's what I can tell you from my experience. I own a 3400c with the
180MHz processor, which I chipped to 198 by means of replacing the
40MHz oscillator on the logic board with a 44 MHz one. With this mod,
I'm within shouting distance of the 3400/240's performance.

My main OS is a hybrid 9.1/9.2 install, a basic 9.1 system with the
Finder and OT components from 9.2.2. I've also installed Yellow Dog
Linux and OS X 10.1.4 and 10.2.8 at different times. YDL runs well but
it's not too user-friendly; OS X doesn't run well, but even 10.1.4
would run iTunes so long as you didn't try to do anything else.
Jaguar, which is now supported via XPostFacto, is faster.

The stock hard drive has been replaced with a newer 20GB unit, and
I've used the hacked CardBus software to enable that support on the
3400. With that, I've been able to do just about anything that
requires a CardBus card. It's pretty remarkable what this now
eight-year-old beast is still capable of doing...

Thanks for all the interesting info, KG. Seems like 9.1 is the best
bet for me. It would be fun to get OSX working, but by the time I
invested in RAM and a hard drive, not to mention the time, I'd be
better off to look at a later PB.

What advantages does the 9.2 Finder/OT have? I'm pretty ignorant about
non-OSX Macs. Just now putting my last Amiga out to pasture.

Thanks again,

 - Peter

I think the general consensus is that the 1400 keyboard is one of the
best ever made by Apple.

If you look around, you will have a hard time finding a 2400 and will
pay probably twice as much for a 2400 as a 1400. The 1400's are
plentiful and inexpensive.

I agree, the 3400c's keyboard is horrible. Compared to that, the
keyboard on the 2400c is an absolute delight (unless you want your keys

1400 is the best. Ever.
It has a nice thick aluminum plate below the keys, so you don't get
the flex that happens in the 500/5300/3400 series. Good action on the
keys, too.

Dan,

I write a lot of text as part of my work. The keyboard on the 1400 is
fabulous, perhaps the best keyboard of any powerbook, ever, far better
than the spongy one on this TiBook I'm using to write this message... I
tried a 3400 and didn't like it. Don't know the 2400 from experience.

If you are considering a Power Book for keyboard I would go with the
1400, however the 2400 is smaller but with a lack of internal drives.
It is up to you.

I have no reference to it on my Wireless FAQ site. Is this a OEM version of
the Lucent WaveLan/Orinoco card?

Check the FCC ID number on the back of the card and compare it to the
numbers I have on my FAQ. If they are the same, then the card may be
compatable with the Orinoco drivers.

Please see the note on Wireless FAQ about the Alvarion BreezeNET PC-DS.11b
card. It is a OEM of the Lucent, but the rom does not let me use the
Orinoco Mac software. This is the only OEM I found that does this.

What OS is the 3400c using?

Nice idea, Adrian.
Maybe we can fill a table like this (please view in monospace):
 |min RAM |max RAM|

 | jiffy | slow | jiffy | slow |
pb 100 | 6 | 7.1 | 7.1 | 8.0 |

I have a PB1400/133/64MB that has OS 8.6 because it suits the PB best.
OS 9.1 would give me more choices in software but it's not worth
bogging down the PB to do it. And OS 8.6 is much more stable than OS
9xx is anyway. Higher numbers are not always better.
just my .02 worth.
--

_
I put OS 9.1 on my 1400 166 MHz 40 MB RAM because I couldn't find my
8.5 install disk at the time. I needed to reinstall something as the
headers got messed up from the previous owner . It had 8.6 on it
then. But errors frequently occured when booting.

Photoshop 5 is limited by RAM but fast enough if you are patient. My
desktops were in storage at the time and I needed the frames for
class.

Word is not slowed appreciably . iTunes does not stutter much.
Especially if the visuals are left off.

I ran 8.6 for a long time. 9.1 seems more stable on PCI desktops to me.
I like 8.6 very much but like the features of 9.1 and think they are
worth the increased RAM overhead. At least for a 604. Perhaps not on
a 603 like the 1400. I'll decide when i get more RAM.

YMMV as gwd said earlier.

It amazes me more and more. I know someone who is trying to run OS X
on a 68k using an emulator but last I heard it was still
bootingand will be for some time.
Now that's a hobby in itself ! More of a challenge to see how
ridiculous one can be.

My issue with OS 9 is that after time the drive will need to be
reformatted and the OS will need to be re-installed because for some
reason the OS hoses itself. And OS 9 Ia more of a RAM hog too.

I never had that problem using OS 8.6 and tha may just be luck or how
often I use it.

We are getting a little OT here so I I'll add that I feel OS 9.2.2 is
better than OS 9.1, but I only use classic on my toys, er I mean
hobbies like the 1400,. So hacking 9.2.2 with OS9forver doesn't give
me much of a benefit and uses even more RAM in an already RAM starved
Mac.

I don't have classic installed on any of the OS X Macs I use and I
would never insult my G4 PB by installing OS 9, much less anything
earlier ;-)

I used to like OS 9 until OS X arrived on the scene and since I switch
back and forth I realize how much advances OS X is. If it wasn't for
NextStep and Steve Jobs we would be using OS 9.whatever.. still.

If I want frustration, I use Windoze..

Any version of OS X on anything less than a G3 with 256MB RAM will be
basically a dysfunctional computer, and a waste of what the computer
can do with the proper OS.

And OS X on an older Powerbook, although it is a fun project, is even
worse because of the lack of VRAM. In fact a large part of the "speed"
in OS X or lack thereof is due to insufficient video.

I could put a 4MB TT video card in a G4 and OS X would be unbearable.
The Mac would run the OS just fine but what you see on the screen will
be incredibly slow.

It's always amazed me why people push their computers to the highest
OS possible when they are giving up function at the same time. If you
actually have to use the Mac for anything you are better off using an
OS that is "usable". If it's a hobby.go for it.

But frustration and lack of speed ruins the whole purpose of the
computer for me.

OS 7.5 is free and there is no free update to OS 7.6 which is why most
people use 7.5 over 7.6. You are right about OS 7.6 being stable, it
is, but rarely do you see OS 7.6 unless it came on the Mac when it was
new.

But that " Golden Ratio " of OS version spec to CPU spec would lead a
lot more users to a harmoniously balanced system.
Which would give longer lasting joy.
If it were only that simple; while you can count on the CPU's, my
experience is that each OS has it's strengths & weaknesses, quirks &
holes, albeit some more than others. I must say I have wondered about
people wanting to put OS 7.5.x on their boxes instead of 7.6.1.

7.6.1 is rock solid in comparison to any of the 7.5's, but hey,

Could some kind developer out there tell us if there is a software
engineering formula to describe a ratio of performance using cpu
specs and software specs to predict an optimal combination figure?
I suppose other hardware specs such as RAM size would be involved too.
But perhaps a table could be worked up ( or series of tables) cross
matching this " mystery figure " for CPU and OS version.
Yes someone out there thinks runiing Tiger on a Lisa is his mission
in life while others think their G5s would be wonderful on OS 6.
But that " Golden Ratio " of OS version spec to CPU spec would lead a
lot more users to a harmoniously balanced system.
Which would give longer lasting joy.

I guess part of all of this is trying something out just to try it out,
which I do all the time (with computers that is.) My old G3 beige takes
forever to boot with 10.2 Jaguar while my 3400cs take forever to boot
with 9.1 and never ran on 9.22 so taking this farther, even with XPF in
control would be really frustrating. But, like OS X on an Xbox, it would
be fun to try.

What's interesting to me in all of this is that if you use a powerbook
as a truly portable system, and if the OS takes forever to boot and
really wants to be left on all the time, shouldn't there be a special OS
just for powerbooks, or a dual boot setup where you choose between a
full boot or a quick and dirty boot for the bus/train/plane ride home?
Carrying around a sleeping laptop seems dangerous to me and I'd rather
just shut it down. I've just installed Linux on one of my pc laptops
and it just cries to be left on 24/7, which can't happen. But, as with
OS X, it is an incredible OS, pretty to look at and very fast and I
can't go back to the original w 98 ever!

Maybe this already exists and a true power user could tweak the settings
for a faster boot on a powerbook but for the rest of us, a dual boot
setup might be a real plus.
