I didn't write the first quote. Only replied to it.
Why not go to Radio Shack or another supplier and get a spray can of
electronic contact cleaner. And on every single contact pin and hole
and card edge and slot spray the heck out of it scrub it with an old
toothbrush and repeat this process at least twice more.
Especially anything that stays in the machine when you swap parts out.
And have you swapped parts from the working machine into the non
working one?
Check cables for damage and loose contacts and pins.
If you have a continuity tester test every wire end to end.
 Good Luck

Hi yes that is what I was saying you can take bits from either and put them
in to work but when the second one is together it will not go. If there is
more than 3 different parts from the bad Mac in my good 3400 that is dead
also. I can not understand it. It does not make sense. And should not
happen.
•---
???
ANY 3 ?
Which ones are in the mix?
Never the same part in any one mix?
You should be able to write down trial info.
By changing one item at a time or 2 different ones you should be able
to eliminate the bad part or combination of parts.
Unless the whole machine was effected say by a lightning strike or ?

Dis you reset ?

booted fine when I put the second one back together with a known good board
NO GO. Every part I have checked works on one book but when the second is
put together it is a no go! I have changed the psu around hdd powerboard ram

The wall socket is good, and power connector is clean, it is the one
that powers my Pismo. And I'm using the reset button in the back to try
to power on the PB.
I think it may be internal damage.
BTW, when I first got the PB, when the reset button was pushed, there
was only a soft click and the green sleep light stayed on. After 24
hours plugged in, that dissappeared.
Just in case, I'll change the external power supply and will plug it in
another wall socket.
Thank you and keep those suggestions coming.

Hi, Listers!
A friend gave me a 3400c to see if I can bring it back from the dead.
It has 48 Mb and OS 8.6. At first I tought that the Power Supply was
bad, and left it connected with a Yo-Yo PS all night. I found the
bottom of the PowerBook extremely warm. Almost hot to the touch.
The LiIon battery didn't take a charge, so I presume it is dead. The PB
started well but then freezed. I had to use the reset button in the
back to restart it. This time only made it to the Desktop before
freezing, next time only to the splash screenm then nothing. It refuses
to boot. I have it now plugged in to see if the internal PRAM battery
takes a charge again.
In between start-ups, I took the 32 Mb RAM module out, just in case,
and put anoher known good one. But nothing happened.
What worries me is the too hot PowerBook bottom after being connected
all night. I took out the useless battery and right now is charging the
PRAM battery, to see if tomorrow I can make it run from a OS 8.5 CD
Anyway, tips, sugestions? It has been a long time since I try to fix
one of this fine 3400's.
Best regards.

Have you started it with extensions off? Also, the 3400 does get hot on
bottom. Make sure the feet in back are out so that some air circulates
around the computer.

Hi, Can you copy the system from the floppy to the HD and then boot
from that? An alternative would be to transfer the files or install
the new system via appletalk.
Best of luck,

2005-03-21 Thread Robert Patterson

Bill,

What I have done to get a new OS on my PB170 was to boot with Gamba's
RAMdisk booter, which boots the PowerBook into System 7.5, installs a
RAMdisk, copies System 7.5 files to it, and then switches to the RAMdisk
as the boot disk. The floppy is then ejected, and since the PB is running
from RAMdisk, you can use the floppy drive to install an OS of your choice
on the PB's hard drive.

Contact me off-line if you need a copy of this great utility, because I
don't think it's available any more from Gamba's web-site.

OS 7.0.1 and PB 145- need help w/disk image

2005-03-13 Thread Ge'
Dear Bill,
I'm not quite sure what is happening, but I'll try mentioning some points:
I have tried simply dbl clicking on the first file- that creates a
large disk image on my desktop, but no way will it fit onto a floppy.
It seems you did everything right up to here, because Disk Copy has
mounted the image and it appears on your desktop as a real disk.

Did you make any changes to these mounted disks??? It is possible to add
or delete files, just like with normal disks, that's why I'm asking...
If in doubt, download the image file(s) again.

Now you need a 1.4 MB floppy for each of the four disk image files. The
floppies should have two holes, one for write-protecting and one to tell
the Mac it's a high-density floppy.
It's best to format the floppies first, so you know they're good.

Then comes the trick:
After a disk image has been mounted (with Disk Copy), insert a floppy,
and drag the icon of the mounted disk (not the image file!) onto the
floppy's icon. That starts the disk-copying process.

Then you can drag both disks to the trash, the mounted image and the
real floppy, and repeat the thing for the other image files.

Good luck and let me know if it works out!
Ge'

I have downloaded the OS files and they were decompressed by Stuffit. I
have Disk Copy 6.3.3 installed. I seem to be doing something wrong when
trying to disk copy each part to a floppy disk. I have tried simply dbl
clicking on the first file- that creates a large disk image on my desktop,
but no way will it fit onto a floppy. Opening Disk Copy and asking it to
mount a disk does the same. I have also tried simply copying each part as
downloaded onto floppies, but my machine won't boot it. (For these testing
purposes I am usiing a dl of 7.5.3 and a pb 180 assuming the process would
be the same for my intended project.
Can anyone refresh me on exactly to go about transferring these multi-part

an OS. Thanks for your time.

The easiest way might be removing the circuit board and finding the
male pin socket part on digikey and swapping that onto the board.
Easiest is relative though.

Re: Need help for HD and Farallon Card

2003-10-26 Thread Nils
Whoa. Well. That sucks :( If you're handy with a soldering iron
you might be able to fix it. Alternatively if you bought the
identical drive from the LEM swaplist or ebay you could switch
circuit boards from one drive to the other. This would be good
if you could find the identical drive that had bad sectors. You
could potentially get it for _cheap_ and swap it's board onto
your drive. The key to this is that the drives have to be the
same model number. Not close (it might work), but the same.

As for the soldering iron solution. You could (i haven't tried this
yet) get some metal the same diameter as the pin desolder and remove
the existing broken pin, cut new piece of metal to a good workable
length, insert it through the plastic housing thing and resolder
it to the board. Then cut off any excess. That should work.
Since I haven't tried it yet, I can't report on my success with
doing it, but in theory, if you're careful, it should work just fine.

Ahh, my fault for not being more specific. One needs to open the System

delete such things. If you don't already have ResEdit, versiontracker
ought to be able to turn it up.

As resource editing can lead to a non-functional OS if done with wild
abandon, the usual ResEdit disclaimer goes here, Don't muck about in

don't know what I'm talking about, might be best to do a little reading

Thanks for trying

you might try the driver at our site---we have a version for the 3Com cards
on our site (under downloads), though I personally am not familliar with
your particular model.. Since we're having a blizzard here in the southeast
today, our s/w tech isn't in, so I can't ask him about it either.. But give
it a try--it might work..

Jim, the point Cameron made is that both drivers loaded prevents either
or both cards from working. The solution is to disable the original
Farallon extension but leave the hacked extension in the extensions
folder. Rebooting should then see the 3com card functional. If not, try
swapping cords, as the two are interchangable IIRC.

I think this does mean both cards cannot be active at once, though I
don't know if that is at what you were aiming.

Be more specific with 'wouldn't work'. When you double click the card,
what happens? Do you have an EtherTalk network you can test with?

Also, are you using the right dongle? The 10/100 dongles don't work with
the 3C589 series of cards.

Hi Steve
Try command option shift delete at startup with your bootable zip.
C wouldn¹t work with my 1400 either but the above did.
To be bootable the zip needs to be specially made with the rescue disk part
of 'Tools' but I guess you know that.

Hope this helps

Scott and Paul,

I have tried resetting the power manager with no luck. :-(

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Andre

Have you reset the power manager? Ctl/opt/Apple/restart with
 power/batt off for half hr.
No way for CompUSA, or any other commercial repair. You can do it
yourself, as the 5XX's are so modular that there's no reason for paying
 techies.
Get the service manual, and swap back the 040 to narrow down the
problem. Might be the PPC daughtercard. If it still doesn't work, then
you know that the most expensive part isn't the problem. Probably the
 motherboard, then.

Need help with dead 520c

2002-09-11 Thread André Rüegg

My trusty old 520c, which has been upgraded with a Newer PowerPC upgrade
card and a 540c screen, has suddenly decided to play dead. It does nothing.
The batteries seem to be charged. The power supply seems to be providing
power. I pulled the hard drive and it worked fine in an external case (I
retrieved my data). But when I hit the power button it just sits there.

When I had the case open I made sure that everything seemed to be seated
properly on the boards. Any suggestions?

I noticed that the local (45 miles away) CompUSA store advertises that they
can repair any type of computer. Would this be a safe alternative? Any
recommendation for other repair options?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Wanting his Blackbird to fly again,

Andre

I am sure I have the .pdf file on that machine, if U want it. It dscribes a
way to reset the power on the PB 5xx ( other trubbel-shootin' tricks) but
I don't remember it offhand. I think it involves removing all forms of power

Anyway, If U still need it this evening, I can send a link when I leave the

Re: Need help with dead 520c

2002-09-11 Thread Scott Holder

First thing to try is to remove all power sources and let it sit awhile.

Failing that, reset the power manager with all power removed.

As for CompUSA, yes, they might could fix it. But, you could probably
get a whole new 520c what they'd want to charge. Probably even a 33mhz
upgrade to go alone with it.

Need help with external video

2002-08-17 Thread Louis Labrie

Hi all

A couple things I'm having trouble with.
I have a PB Wallstreet 266MHz 192mb ram OS 9.2.
I have it set up with a external monitor (KDS 15)
And ext. keyboard and mouse.
Ok when I close the screen on the powerbook the monitor goes black
I would like to leave it closed to keep the dust out since I'm using the
ext, monitor. Can I do this it seems it should and how?
Also when I start playing a game it starts out ok but then the monitor loses
video. What gives with this?
This set up is for my kid's and I want them to use it as a desktop.
Thanks

Lou

Need Help w/PB 180c

2002-07-11 Thread Byron Gardner

I have a PB 180c that won't keep the right time or date. When I change it in
the
Date and Time CP it changes to something else right before my eyes. Never
seen this before.

Would a dead PRAM battery cause this behavior? I have done the usual, reset
the PRAM etc. I mean it changes time and date when I click outside the time
box in the DT control panel. Seems to change at random. Weird.

Any help is appreciated and welcome. Or direct me to the right place
someone.

Thanks,
Byron

Try finding Powerlogix website and download G3/G4 Cache Profiler.
This lets you vary the ratio of cache speed to CPU speed. Works on a

Yes, you need the system extensions that activate the card at startup.
Visit the manufacturers web site.

Enjoy, great upgrade.

The Linksys router needs no drivers, according to Linksys site, and are
configurable via web browsers.

Here is their user guide: ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befsr11_befsr41ug.pdf

(If that's the one they gave you)

You should be able to:

plug the DSL into the Linksys.

Plug the Airport Base station into one of the ports on the linksys. Now,
go into the Airport documentation, there's also a downloadable PDF
'Designing Airport Networks for Mac OS 9'

http://downloAd.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Networking-Communications/AirPort/Designing_AirPort_Networks.pdf

I know this set-up is discussed in here.

There's also a OSX version of the document...

Plug the ethernet-only G4 into another port on the Linksys.

Re: Need help with DSL/Airport/Router

2002-04-26 Thread Donna Hood Pointer

I use a Lynksys Etherfast Cable/DSL 8-port router with a cable modem. There
was a booklet that came in the box with it that showed you how to configure
it. You fire up your browser then type in the address of the router. It is
in that booklet. For my cable company I had to tell them the MAC address of
the router (instead of the MAC address of my computer) for them to see me,
because the router is between the cable modem and my computer. But that
might not apply for DSL
Donna Pointer-- iMac, ergo iAm

David:

I don't know offhand about the Linksys router, but most of those work
with a simple web browser interface--you configure everything by a computer
hooked directly to the router/hub. You might got to the Linksys web page or
do a search on http://www.google.com/mac.html for Mac and the Linksys
 model number.

Re: [OT] Re: Need help with DSL/Airport/Router

2002-04-26 Thread hope and the anchor

if it's a linksys then leave the username blank and type admin as the
password (or maybe the other way around, i'm not sure now.) if you changed
it from the default (above) you can reset it on the router itself by
pressing in the reset button with a paperclip or toothpick or whatever.

hope.

Out of curiosity, I typed in http://192.168.1.1 on my computer and I get
a
screen in Internet Explorer that asks for user name and password. i
vaguely
recall my manual for the router giving a standard user name and password
to
use when I first set it up. I still recommend following the instructions
in
the manual that came in the box. He has a brand new router from the DSL
 company.

Need help with DSL/Airport/Router

2002-04-25 Thread David Berkowitz

Hello Folks.

I just signed up for Verizon DSL.

I have a powerbook and two desktop G4's, one with an
airport card and the other connected directly to an
Airport base station via ethernet.

I was able to successfully get up and running on one
of the desktop macs (the one without the airport
card.) Verizon also sent me a Linksys DSL/Router/Hub
that came with only Windows software.

How do I get all the computers on the DSL network?
