Re: [ql-users] Re: [ql-users] Re: [ql-users] Re: [ql-users] RE: [ql-users] £ 1000 to spend!
My brother in law works for lexmark (senior sales director) and I asked him why Parallel has become extinct on cheap inkjets - he said ( as far as he knows) it is because the Parallel interface is copyrighted and owned by centronics, and royalties must be paid, whereas USB can be adopted for free - therefore an extra few pence profit in the cheaper range printers by adopting USB only. This is only part of the story. There is also a general move by the computer industry to have fewer interfaces and, by extension, fewer drivers on a system. USB II is much faster than Parallel - actually even USB 1.1 was. They also want to lose the PS/2 ports and use USB for keyboard and mouse as well. It is all part of the way that the physical makeup of the modern computer is being steered. As I have said before the floppy drive is going too!. Floppy drives have been on the out for a couple of years now - Apple started this off by dropping them from the Mac range. Now, here in Ireland at least, new DELL computers don't come with floppies as default, and they are a 15 euro additional extra. The push is now to use compact flash etc. as the removable easily transportable medium, or USB keyring drives (both of which work just fine with QPC!!) Darren. Re: [ql-users] RE: [ql-users] £1000 to spend!
I agreed with Jochen, exporting is pointless unless you already have something on the QL that you need to convert, and 99% of the time Geoff's QL2PC does that admirably. If you have to use OpenOffice on a PC to print QL documents, why not get rid of the QL altogther and just use OpenOffice to begin with? Or buy a BIC Pen - much cheaper than an inkjet anyway :-)) cheers. Darren Branagh, Bank of Ireland - Cards And Loans Business, Nassau House, 33/35 Nassau Street, Dublin 2. Ireland. I agree this would be nice - I have mentioned it previously, but we seem to be barking up the wrong tree to some extent when it comes to using Windows only printers. A filter between QPC2 and the Windows printer driver is really not of any use to the general QL public, as it will not work with original QLs or with the Q40/Q60. Well, it depends on how you define general QL public. I estimate that the number of ACTIVE QL software users is actually running their software on QPC (well, I know the sales figures, don't I?) ;-) And there was no problem, wish and demand for anything but printing solutions (for QLs *AND* QPCs, of which the majority was QPC users). Well, and like you say: I am not aware of masses of current printers (and current means several years which can be used with a QL. Considering that users want a modern printer which can be used on various systems, I doubt that a dot-matrix printer (yes, you still get plenty, very expensive ones from EPSON) is the solution. Look at how many people use QPC on Laptops - it is quite natural that they would also like it to print on current colour printers, or portable inkjets etc. Jochen This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. These can be printed without a problem using the small driver utilities we have for HP and Epson. Sorry - they cannot be printed with the small driver utilities which we have, unless you have specific printers - most modern, low cost printers (eg 99% of the EPSON range) will only print graphics !! They do not recognise a string of plain ASCII text sent to them - this is why we are faced with the problem! Exactly this is the problem - and even if some of them are able to print plain ASCII - this still does not help people with t87 documents etc ... we're NOT all using PC programs - my manuals are still printed from text87, and again - the text87patch shows that I'm not the only one having this problem. Printing is one of the biggest problems, as far as I can gather from customer emails and phone calls. You cannot imagine how many people just go out and buy a printer, and then wonder why QPC does not print anything anymore. Well, it has been written many times in QL Today and in the newsgroup etc. - but you just don't find a printer in the media stores anymore which is useable for us... There is also another problem: the interface. QPC prints, fortunately, to printers connected via USB, parallel port and serial port, PROVIDED they understand printing commands. Well, have a look at current printers and you see the problem: most of them come with USB only. There are adaptors USB to parallel and USB to serial, but the other way round...? I guess that non-QPC users will soon have a second problem in addition to the printer-language problem: how do I connect a printer with USB to the Aurora or Q40/Q60? Dilwyn, I suggest you tape it.. I can't get BBC4 over here and would love to see it. If good, I could digitise it and turn it into a movie file for download. Will try. Can you get it via Sky, I assumed Sky in Ireland had pretty much the same channels as over here? Actually, no. The Irish Sky setup is very much different - we only get BBC1 (not even BBC2!!) and no channel 4 or 5 (which I miss from the analogue days) and no ITV either, OR ITV2. We do get RTE1 and NETWORK2 and TV3 and TG4 (the irish terrestrial channels) via the sky box so better picture and sound, but all the channel numbers are different from the UK as a result!! I find I watch sky movies most anyway. Off topic I know, but does anyone know if the freeview boxes work all over Ireland? I was disputing getting sky in the house in Galway as well as Wicklow, but two subs would be a bit much. I know a few people who bought freeview boxes in the Uk and are using them in Dublin without any problems, but would they work on the far side of the country? Do they use a dish, or just the normal roof mounted job? Cheers, Darren. For about £8/month (as opposed to £13.50 to £40 plus for Sky) you can get some of the popular sky channels like Discovery, UK Gold, E4 etc (i.e. more popular channels than current Freeview ones), but the nice feature (unlike Sky) is that you can mix and match or select your own set of channels rather than have Sky select all the ones you don't like for you. Those (like me) who have a Freeview box (as opposed to an old ITV digital box) will need an add-on card reader (more junk!) costing about £20. Re: [ql-users] Cybiko Driver for QDOS
Hi all, I was talking to Simon again about the Cybiko - apparently some of the retailers mentioned on the web site are currently doing 2 for the price of 1 - which is (according to simon) where the cybiko comes into its own. He has a Cybiko linked to his computer over a TCP/IP connection, with the second cybiko as a wireless internet link to the other that is connected to the computer. to quote from his email :- Follow the link to Dosocery shops and you'll find they're doing two for the price of one ATM. Two Cybikos are better than twice as good as one, because of the radio link, and then you can use one as a base-station plugged into a TCP network and mains power and the other is a wireless/WAP internet terminal, with no connect charges. The programs to do this - on Windoze and Linux - are freely available. this is probably what I'll do - quite useful about the house!! Then click on the download link where the news about the new ZeXcel version is shown. or direct link to: http://www.geocities.com/dsantachiara/zxemulators.htm Below are the release notes Best Regards Davide ---8---8--8--8--8--- [] Notes about 2003 Italian QL Meeting special edition This version is now compatible with QPC2/QXL 65k colours mode (mode 32) and Q40/Q60 65k colours mode (mode 33). Currently ZeXcel does not support Aurora 256 colours mode and we do not foresee to support that mode. This version has been specially written by Marco Ternelli and me for the 10th Italian QL meeting that has been held on 26th of October 2003 in Reggio Emilia. It was not easy after 8 years to be able to modify and compile the source codes. The 1995 version of ZeXcel was compiled with QLiberator under Minerva. This new version has been ported on SMSQ/E with slights amendements on the basic code. The current basic source is 110k of text and more than 3100 lines of code. The assembly code (400k of text files and around 14000 lines of code) has been again compiled on the incredibly fast Hisoft assembler (thanks Simon Goodwin for suggesting and getting this wonderful package). [] Ideas for future improvements The graphic conversion routine for 65k colours mode is all but optimised. This means that it is much slower than the 4/8 colours routines. Hence ZeXcel is slower when used with high colours than with the standard Mode 4 / Mode 8. Unfortunately after so many years it seems almost impossible to perform an optimisation because it would be a very long task to understand the design behind the old routines and then make new routines for 65k colours mode. However the slowness of the 65k colours ZeXcel mode should not be a major problem and instead could become an important feature. Especially because if you run ZeXcel with QPC2 on a quite modern PC (eg. Pentium/Athlon with frequency higher than 1000 MHz) most probably the ZX games will run too fast. For this reason the fact that the graphic routines are not optimised for speed could become useful in order to be able to play games. If the speed is still to high I advise to set high compatibility on and video sync on. Linked to the speed factor one further possible improvement would be a slow down option for fast system. During the modifications that were performed on the basic code a minor problem when loading Z80 snapshot has been found. The real source of this problem has not been found so a workaround has been used. For this reason it could happen that after having loaded the Z80 snapshot the ZX screen will not be updated

Re: [ql-users] Moving the Norwich Show
HI Tarquin and all, I have long had the idea of combining shows - I am thinking on an even bigger level than this - something like the micro mart retro stand at the Birmingham NEC last year which Alex Wells and the Q60 boys attended. It was great, and I spent the entire day walking around going ohhh... remember those? It was FULL of retro computers - Orics, Amigas, BBC's, Commodores, Apples, Acorns, and Sinclairs. And it was in a nice venue, and thousands attended, abeit most for the PC trading stands, but then even these started on the older machines and wandered into the retro section. Whats wrong with all the old computer users banding together and holding one massive show per year for the benefit of ALL our machines? Surely it would do us all some good? Maybe someone with the time (unfortunately not me) can contact the movers and shakers in all the other retro worlds - commodore users, oric users, atari users, etc. and get something planned for next year? I would certainly go out of my way to attend it. Darren Branagh, Bank of Ireland - Cards And Loans Business, Nassau House, 33/35 Nassau Street, Dublin 2. Ireland. Tel: 01-6798230 Fax: 01-6706813. Originally it was planned to include a Quanta Workshop, but I was talked out of it. At the show, as part of a 'QL2000 Way Forward' style discussion, it was decided that QL should be included come next time. It was suggested that if QLers only want to do it themselves then maybe the two shows could run in parallel i.e.two shows in the same hall or a spectrum village inside a QL show. One visitor said he would bring a Thor next time whatever I said, while another said the last QL show he had been to was a flop and the end of the road. Some questioned why QL would not mix with other Sinclair users. Traders at ORSAM sell things that maybe of interest to QL users, while QL Traders will benefit from the bigger market. Costs of the show (a 3 figure sum) would be halved, there is no danger of the QL being overwhelmed by other platforms, more the reverse if anything. One thing of note is that there was not a single Windows or Mac computer at ORSAM 2003. Surely its better to have one successful show than two that fail and have to be stopped. I need to have feed back from you as to what your thoughts are now about sharing a show with other Sinclair users. [ql-users] The Byfleet Show - NEW PRODUCT!!
HI All, This is just to confirm that Q-Celt Computing will be at the Byfleet show on Sunday. Also attending will be Dilwyn Jones (who is kindly driving down overnight straight from work!) and we will be demo-ing the new Product, LAUNCHPAD, and selling the first full versions of it at the show!! LAUNCHPAD is a simple and easy to use Desktop GUI (graphical user interface) for the QL, allowing you to assign icons to your favourite programs, to have your own login passwords for various users of your QL, to basically set up your QL how you want, and loads of other features. There are even loads of additional programs included free of charge to add to it - such as some new pointer games, a calculator, a file transfer program, and a calendar, a screen saver program, a file viewer, and many more!! In fact, the full LAUNCHPAD package (including all the additional free programs) is so vast it will not fit on one HD disk!! It is what DIlwyn has been working on for the last 2 years or so - exclusively. With this much work, you can get an idea of how advanced it is. Come along to Byfleet and be among the first to see the full version!! In the meantime, you can check out the demo version from Dilwyn's website. As ever, we will try to have our full range of CD's etc available. The QL 2002 - THE DVD will also be on sale. Also, as I will be flying over, if anyone is interested in buying anything specific from me at the show, could you please email or phone me first as I will be limited in the amount of stock I can bring over. Thanks! See you all on Sunday!! cheers, Darren Branagh, Q-CELT COMPUTING. This is how the rule was and this is how it worked in Germany. Then a few countries decided to drop out (like the UK) and this is when Roy and I started to have problems with these cheques. Step by step, all banks dropped out because they did not make enough money from this and it was a method too cheap and easy to pay private individuals in different currencies, especially during holidays. With the introduction of the EUR, the banks DOUBLED the charge for getting cash out of the wall (of course, we all benefit, huhuuu)... and got rid of the Eurocheques everywhere, so there is no choice. Eurocheques do not exist anymore, so they are treated like ordinary cheques ... and the fee for ordinary cheques are extraordinary. I would call them Go-away charge. Postbank has raised the prices for cashing foreign cheques by a factor of 10 Just like Roy says, banks make sure they get their share. Whoever believed that they would not find ways to compensate the loss of the money they made with currency-exchange must have been extremely naive. BUT - money transfers between EURO countries is fairly cheap now. Customers need to specifiy IBAN and BIC and then it should not cost more than a national transfer. HOWEVER: If they miss one of the numbers, both you and the customers pay :-((( Cheers Jochen This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Before anyone of you gets your hopes up, please note that this IS NOT a SSS implementation on QPC2 -Marcel is still working on that- but rather use of the excellent QPC_EXEC command. [ql-users] Eurocheques
Hi All, Just a query regarding Eurocheques. Mostly for the traders this one, but any advice welcome... Typically, I have never had to deal in Eurocheques, as most of the orders I process for Q-Celt come in via the Uk and I usually get UK personal cheques or bank drafts, and sometimes cash. However, I recently got an order, and the customer paid by eurocheque. On going to my bank (which I WORK for!!) I was told there would be a 15 euro charge for processing the eurocheque, plus I would be open to a charge from Deutsche Bank also (an unknown amount, but probably something similar to the one my bank were charging) as it would have to be sent to them for cashing!! The cheque was for 48 pounds sterling - and nearly half of this would have gone on charges if I had cashed it. Is this correct? How on earth are eurocheques therefore usable at all, unless dealing in huge amounts? Am I doing something wrong? cheers, Darren Branagh, Bank of Ireland - Cards And Loans Business, Nassau House, 33/35 Nassau Street, Dublin 2. Ireland. Tel: 01-6798230 Fax: 01-6706813. It might well be down to the fact that there are two programs running which might be having an effect. Scandisk runs fine and reckons (even on advanced) that there are no errors. The slow down has happened gradually fairly recently, implying it's not just one new installation or deinstallation, which is why I thought it might be down to fragmentation. The two programs running in the background are DirectCD and AVG anti-virus. I also have a huge folder with images of my QXL.WIN QL CDs (PD library, Emulators CD, Clipart CDs etc etc). Once I'm sure I've got up to date backups, I'll take up the suggestions and have another go. I'm spending every spare minute on Launchpad at the moment as it's so close to release, really hoping to have it at the Byfleet workshop, and the demo version on my website by the weekend - the only incomplete bits at the moment are the text file viewer accessory (nearly finished, but it is important as it's used for the Help files) and the calculator accessory. My brother in law (to be) is a senior figure in Lexmark Ireland - he says Lexmark have a warehouse full of broken returned cheap inkjets that they allow to fill up to capacity, then container them over to malaysia or similar to be destroyed or in some cases repaired as it cheaper to do that (obviously in some sweatshop) that over here. Re: [ql-users] Status of QPC1
Sorry Marcel - just thought Roy or Jochen might know as they might be selling it :-)) I think there is a market for it as a way of attracting new QL users if available very cheaply or even (dare I say it) for free. QL2K, QLAY and UQLX are very good, but a bit fiddly by comparison - with QPC1, you run it and you have a QL in front of you - a decent working one with full floppy/win support and all the other bells and whistles, not to mention SMSQ/E, which is now no longer commercial. QPC1 on a CD with a load of QL freeware would make a very atractive cover disk for a PC magazine I think. Whats your thoughts? RE: [ql-users] Status of QPC1
QPC1 was (strangely enough) the predecessor of QPC2. :-)) Basically a much less impressive version that ran only under DOS and wasn't a windows application - to run it on a windows machine means shutting down and restarting windows in DOS mode We though it was the business in the early days but there is no comparison to the newer QPC2 of today. Plus a lot of the newer QPC2 features are missing - such as QPC_EXEC, the DOS device, and high colour support and so on. [ql-users] Virtual QL Show??
Dilwyn Jones struck on a good idea in an email he sent me - a virtual QL show. I was telling him about Phoebus being at the Irish Show via MSN Messenger, and he had the idea of having a virtual QL show - might be a worthwhile idea, with falling atendance at QL shows as is. We'd need Fast internet access at the venue, and webcams etc, which rules out most of the current venues - but perfect for future Irish Shows. Could use paltalk or something similar for the subscribers, and all anyone would have to do would be to login when the show is on. Tony could do a QL repair on webcam, and those not attending in the flesh could tune in via the net. Would be even better for talks and demos (if there were any...) :-))) What does everyone think of this?? I will definitely be looking into this for the Irish Show next year. cheers, Darren Branagh, Bank of Ireland - Cards And Loans Business, Nassau House, 33/35 Nassau Street, Dublin 2. Ireland. Hi all, back from hols and back on email. As regards the below email I sent from the centre regarding tonys pictures, I checked it sent correctly - it did. But if was sent from the wrong email address - there are about 4 set up on the PC I used, and it send from a default email we use for queries in the centre rather than my own personal email - I was using richards PC at the time. The email I sent from was not subscribed to the list, so this is (I assume) why the email never appeared. Am I right? In message [EMAIL PROTECTED], Dilwyn Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes The QL Emulators CD that Dilwyn and Darren produced, for example, was a great idea. Once the GUI's area available it would be good to do this again ... and more. Thanks. I hadn't really thought of using Launchpad or QDT in this context, but who knows? Have CD that would 'auto magically' produce and set up a QL environment on a MAC or PC, etc. It will have to be easy and 'done on a plate' to get new users involved. They won't have the time to catch up on all the things that those of still involved may know about. This is one of the shortcomings of the present CD, I didn't know enough about the 'other computers' to do auto-setups etc, which is why it's only a home brew-DIY tinkerers setup and readme.txt's etc. Anyone who'd like to do this is welcome to have a copy to provide such a setup, but please make it flexible enough to allow for whatever might happen, for example, the latest CD (v1.24) now has QL2K and the Windows version of uQLx, just added as is with additions to the readme files. I hope someone will have the skill and time in a packaged way ... it -- Malcolm Cadman This is an Idea I had some time ago. Actually, back when the late Colin Baskett was editor of QUANTA Magazine, I came up with a version of QPC1 demo (the old original DOS version) that went on a floppy, and had its own boot file and autoexec.bat file, and would boot up as a QL and also ran a little boot file and loaded up some PD programs, including Xchange and some useful freeware stuff, and so ran directly when inserted into the floppy drive of a PC and reset the machine - most PC's will try to boot from the floppy first by default (this is set in the BIOS) and then the hard drive, with newer BIOSes adding the option to boot directly from CD too. My floppy didn't even use MS-DOS - I used a freeware alternative called free-dos AND THIS MADE THE ENTIRE THING FREELY -DISTRIBUTABLE :-)) I gave a copy to Colin, but don't think it ever ended up in the library. The latter might be the way to go - have a bootable CD and have it load maybe QPC2 or QL2K - although this would be harder to do as Windows must be initiated and running first!! I'm on hols next week so will try and look into it...hopefully can get something that works. I also have a bootable disk that does the same thing on an amiga (any version) and will boot the kick rom and the amiga/QL emulator from asingle floppy disk direct from a reset too, so no user knowledge is needed to get it up and running., Darren, This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Re: [ql-users] Geoff's departure
Hi all, There have been many varied comments on Geoff's departure, and I would like to throw my tuppence worth in, if only as the only remaining trader who hasn't as yet. I read geoff's lengthy response listing his reasons for quitting, and I too agree with most of them as the other traders have said. I also agree with Tonys comment - 100 quid loss is nothing, it often costs me more than this to simply turn up at a show, as a long ferry/train/car/plane combination journey is always involved. I love being a QL user. I can't think of my life without there being a black box there somewhere. Most of my closest and most trusted friends where made via the QL in some form or other. I was Dilwyn Jones' best man at his wedding (a favour I hope he'll return soon!) and all of the traders I consider dear friends - including Geoff. I recall with fondness his failed attempt to get a picture of me standing under a Union Jack flag at a show a few years ago (I'm Irish) and the fun involved, and then finding out he himself had Irish blood deep in his veins!! Anyway, he is dead right is what he says. I yearn for the days when you turned up at a show and went home with a pocketful of cash and a smile on your face. Thing is though, we didn't get into it to make money, just to provide a service - which is why I still do it, or a least try to, I cock up regularly, but I still try. I admit I have let people down in the past - I don't think Geoff was one of them though, but I stand to be corrected. I have given Jochen several headaches in the past, all of which were my fault, and thankfully he has forgiven me each time - Thanks Jochen. And also Tony, who has almost murdered me via email on several occasions when trying to do a show flyer, but has always persisted. Just one of the many reasons why these people are my friends. I too have pondered getting out of the QL scene - as a trader at least, especially over the last 6 months or so. I have become a father, Dylan Jack Branagh is now 4 months old and its an expensive thing, bringing up kids. I am building a house, and commuting to Galway each week (a 400 mile round trip as I work in Dublin) to see my fiancee and son so every penny counts these days -I am no longer a single bloke living with his parents with loads of spare cash to blow - those days are gone. A few years ago, I made my last real profit at QL2000, since then, it typically costs me a couple of hundred quid per show to go to one. I have even been to shows were I have sold NOTHING, not a sausage. But I too will stay with it. because I LOVE it. I love meeting the faces and chatting with people I consider real friends - we all have our foibles, and I have loads, but the reason I stay is the friendships. Every decent funny story I know revolves around a QL - the night Dilwyn Jones and Simon Goodwin where programming at opposite ends of my bedroom, and Dilwyn asked Simon for a Floppy dick..(!) The time Roy Wood, Jim Hunkins, Tony Firshman and I ended up in a Gay Bar in Montreal, The time Tony spent ages looking for a serial cable for Roy when there was one on Roys table all along, The night Dilwyn used the Calculator on QPAC1 to divide out a restaurant bill after a row started, and the night Jochen and Dilwyn and I brought Marcel Kilgus out for a Birthday curry when he hated the damn things . All priceless moments I remember with great fondness - I'm laughing as I write this. Then there was the amazing programming moments - seeing Simon Goodwin rewrite a portion of his DIY toolkit extensions just for me in a few minutes, which I still use today. Sitting in Dilwyns house having a beer, and then seeing Dilwyn jump up 'cos hes just had a great idea - and an hour later the QL Documentation CD was done. The many hours spent working through the night into the wee small hours before a show just to get a new product finished, or Watching Marcel battle with QPC and why it wasn't working on Toshiba laptops in Dilwyns house amazing stuff. I can see the day when we remaining traders will set up shop in a hall as usual, and nobody will arrive, nothing will be sold, and that will be it - but hopefully that a few years away yet. I do think we are having too many shows each year now though, and a big show each year with maybe one or two others at the maximum is where we are now at. Thats all I have to say. Yes, the QL world is a shadow of its former self - shock!!! Its been that way for years. Geoff has made a decision which is very sad and he'll be missed, his eloquent turn of phrase and enjoyable sense of humour will be now lacking at our meetings - or will you still attend the odd one as a QL user Geoff? Maybe you could come to the Irish QL show this year? That really is a social event, and we had a ball last year. May be the tonic your looking for let your hair down and remember why you became a QL user in the first place. Cheers, Darren.
Re: [ql-users] QL2004
Geoff Wicks wrote:- I can see that Geoff would prefer a UK show, Actually Darren you are misquoting me. I have already indicated my theoretical preference for a continental show. What I doubt is the practicality. Sorry Geoff. Though I don't think practicality comes into it anymore. A significant number of QL'ers have gone west in the last 3 years since QL2000, so much so that in my belief you'd get as much attendees in a hyped up show either side of the channel. Granted, there are more QL'ers in the UK, but how many of these will attend a show? Will probably be the same attendees as always and a few extras that come for the hell of it - especially now, 3 years after QL2000. Holding it on the continent would I think have the effect that although the number of available attendees is smaller, a higher proportion of these would attend because of its uniqueness - ie. I'd rather have 80% of the continental QL'ers attending in Eindhoven than 20% of the UK contingent attending in Portsmouth. Of course I am guessing these figures, so I am opening myself up to be proven wrong... Don't get me wrong either, I'd like to go to Eindhoven, but I just want it to be a success - (and by success I'd put FUN before a profit, although I wouldn't complain if the latter occurred too!) you can hold it in a toilet cubicle on an oilrig for all I care, just as long as it is enjoyed by all. The Irish Show last year had about seven or eight attendees including traders, and was the most fun I've had in years, which is why we're doing it again. I think a poll is a EXCELLENT idea - this maybe should be in the next QUANTA and QL today - An online poll is a good starting point. Though again, how many will actually make an effort to register their opinion? It might just be best to pick a venue, and promote the hell out of it in the coming months - make a case for QL2004 and the people will come wherever it is. In any case it is all very theoretical as I do not expect to be in the QL community this time next year. Well, thats very sad indeed. You are an excellent programmer, and a nice bloke and you'll be missed as a trader and QL'er. Also sad that you are thinking this way... Darren. I too would like to think Roy Brereton for his efforts - QL2000 was a milestone in QL history that will stand out in my mind for many years to come - probably forever, and I think we have Roy to thank for a lot of it. I recall Roy even managed to reorganise the dinner to a new location at the last minute, as he only found out hours earlier that the restaurant beside the Marriot and travel lodge were we where all staying in was closed for refurbishment - and the management never told him depite him booking it weeks earlier. Again, like John Gilpin, if there is anything I can do to help organise it, then just let me know. As you are aware, I'm in Ireland, but anything I can do regarding contacting people or emailing, running adverts in the QLl publications etc. I will gladly do. Geoff Wicks wrote:- So we are all going to converge on Eindhoven from all over the world in October 2004 for a major international show. Yep looks like it... :-)) I can see that Geoff would prefer a UK show, and in many ways this is probably a better idea, but I am unsure about wether you really would get a bigger attendance these days at a UK venue rather than Eindhoven - the last few UK shows I was at had a handful of attendees. I think no matter where you hold it, a lot of attendees will come if put on the same scale at QL2000 was, purely on the basis its a big thing to be there - the 21st anniversary of the QL. Eindhoven appeals to me as I can combine it with a family holiday in the area, and cut my costs. Plus we could see a lot of the continental QL users that never/seldom come to a QL show in the UK, as it would be on their (relatively speaking) doorstep - People like Wolfgang, Francois, Dieter, Claude, Jimmy, etc... and would be cheaper for them to get to. I don't want to be a killjoy, but there is a very slight, relatively unimportant, complication. Who is going to organise it? Quanta of course. They did a great job last time. Can't see what the problem would be this time round. OK, its in a foreign location, but all the booking and much of the organisation can be done with phone calls and email. Cheers, Darren. [ql-users] 3rd Irish QL Show - full details again!
Just another subtle reminder :-)) And we've upped the attendance this year - Keith Mitchell is coming too : -)) Darren. THE 3rd IRISH QL SHOW WEEKEND, The Wicklow Web Centre, Main Street, Roundwood, Co.Wicklow, Ireland. Weekend of August 29th to 31st, 2003. The Show will take place on the Saturday 30th August 2003 - from 2pm to 5pm, However, it is never really a show as such, more a casual get together of QL users with the traders attending. So, If you do intend to come, and are looking for something specific from any of the traders, do contact them directly and order it, as many of the traders coming will be travelling light - very light!! If you don't pre-order, they may not have what you need on the day. Roy Wood of Qbranch, Tony Firshman of TF Services, and Darren Branagh of Q-Celt Computing will be there. Steve Reyal will hopefully be on hand to demo the QL2002 DVD - and a full screening will take place for anyone interested, free of charge. There may even be a demo of the new QL software product, LAUNCHPAD, by Dilwyn Jones!! Roundwood is a beautiful small village high in the Wicklow Mountains, about 35 miles south of Dublin City. It is about an hour and 15 minutes drive or so from the Dublin airport, and 40 minutes drive from the Dun Laoghaire ferry terminal (where the HSS ferry docks from Holyhead) Rosslare Europort is about a 2 hour car journey. Roundwood is the highest village in Ireland, and contains several high quality pubs and restaurants - just ask anyone who was here last year!! Glendalough (the 2nd biggest tourist attraction in Ireland) is only a few miles away. There are scenic drives, championship golf courses, fun parks, and nature reserves all nearby. The Show venue is the Wicklow Web Centre, a business located half way up the Roundwood main Street, on the right, if approaching from the Dublin direction - it is a bright yellow painted building, and has ample car parking at the rear. It is facing the Parish hall and next to the Tochar House pub and guesthouse. Full internet and Email access is available free of charge inside on the day of the show. Tea and Coffee facilities are also available. Anyone with any further queries, or for directions or accomodation, should contact Darren Branagh on 00-353-404-45319 or mobile 00-353-86-8100090, or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] (office hours only). Not bad Norman!! I still like the piece of sellotape over the ball on the bottom of the mouse trick - for the non-technical (ie. most secretaries!) it keeps them puzzled for ages wiggling their mice and nothing happens. The other one is prising off the keys from the keyboards and switching them about, or spelling out rude word on the keyboard with them - this won't bother the touch typists, but as for the rest of us. [ql-users] QL2004 - 21st Anniversary Bash, Manchester, 17/4/04.
Thanks for that Info, Bruce. Well, thats that settled - its a bit further away, which is a much better idea as it gives our foreign friends a better chance of coming - hopefully all of the attendees at QL2000 will return and it can be as successful as that event. The Manchester venue has been used before, has good car parking, a nice big room, and a separate room for talks etc, and a Kitchen area. This will also help maybe kick start a bit of a lift to the north of the UK where shows are scarce. I think we need to start pushing this date in a big way NOW - the hype built up for QL2000 for months and months before hand, and it was great to see a major event be so successful. Geoff Wicks wrote:- Thanks for the reply and to all the others who replied. Sorry to hear that attendance is also a problem in North America, but the point I was trying to make was that from the reports in QL Today it appears that North America still has shows old style with talks, demonstrations and a good social occasion. You can be sure that people would not come from Europe each year if they did not enjoy the shows. Mind you, Al can be a pretty persuasive person. Thats very true - Steve Reyal and I showed the entire QL 2000 DVD at the Washington show, and the Room was packed. Plus Herb Schaff did his Graphics Demo, which was very good indeed. Jim Hunkins talked at length on QDT, and Nasta gave a great talk too - Stuff you don't see in the UK anymore. We even had a separate room for the talks laid out conference style with a SVGA projector and ample seating. We seem to have a specific problem in the UK that next year lots of people seem interested in organising shows, and that's welcome, but it is too many for those of us who have to travel long distances. Another question is what we do at shows now that numbers are smaller. I don't know the answer to this, which is one of the reasons I started the discussion. Maybe we have to think of putting more emphasis on social events and less on the QL for at least some of the shows (e.g. QUANTA AGM). A QL2000 type event, on a slightly less lavish scale, should be possible once a year, but then we have to think how we give form to more local workshops. Malcolm Cadman made a good point a few weeks ago when he said that organising a shows helps to build up enthusiasm in a local group. I definitely think a QL2000 type event is viable again - even one of them. I feel it would get those qlers that only venture out once in a while to make it to the show. But yes, I agree with Geoff - the QL scene is becoming one of friendship rather that shows and trading, but thats the way its been for a few years now. So maybe more emphasis on social events is a good idea - I know the last Irish show was a big success in that department despite the low attendance. Darren. Geoff Wicks wrote:- Sorry I can't give any firm suggestions about dates or give a firm promise to be there at this notice. Having said that I would want to give a Norwich show a high priority because of what I have earlier said on this list about the need to break the stranglehold the South East has on shows. I would probably choose Norwich over one of the more established workshops. I would agree, I sometimes get letters from QLers in the north of England asking for a set show a year up there somewhere - I think it should be a priority to get a show up there once a year. I think Tarquin has the energy and committment to get it going, which is why I'll try hard to be there - despite the lack of funds these days with junior... :-)) Please don't be put off by what I am now going to write. The show agenda for early next year is beginning to look crowded. London and Norwich are now being planned and we can also expect Hove and a QUANTA AGM all before end April/early May. (Although given that QUANTA now no longer has respect for its own constitution, it must be seen as being an unreliable, loose cannon.) Practically I think it unlikely that I would be able to attend all these workshops and I think this will probably true of most traders, particularly those who have long distances or overnight stays to get to shows. I agree too. I unlike most of the other traders have a particularly difficult time gettting to shows, all of them involve an often expensive plane or ferry ticket and an overnight stay, a bit like Jochen. Not to mention the crazy prices in those Welcome Break services thingys you have over there - why do you put up with those prices? I remember paying over 50 quid for 4 cod n'chips once - Madness. But, however, the point is I still do it. I enjoy it, and I have many very good, trusted, and close friends in the QL community - all of the traders for starters. I'll try to get too as many shows as I can, by that is getting harder now I have a son and work committments on the increase. Which reminds me - I plan on having another Irish Piss-up (its never really a show, as we spend more time at the pub that the show venue) at the end of August. I will annouce dates soon, but can anybody attend this one? It was really a traders only event last year except for John Hall and Hilary O'Kelly (thanks guys!) but we (the traders) really enjoyed it because it gave us all the chance to chat and have a laugh again, as we so rarely do these days. Great food, usually great weather, good accommodation, and some great craic - what more do you want? We really need to start thinking about what the frequency and purpose of workshops should now be. The attendance at the last shows has been fairly low and frankly they are beginning to offer very little to the average QL user. Their main purpose now seems to be meeting old friends and updating software from the traders. There are now no talks, no demonstrations, few people bringing their own QLs, hardly anyone giving advice or asking advice. This may be OK for the in-crowd, but not much use for people on the periphery of the QL community. Well, I haven't done a demo to a crowd in years. But I still demo software to individuals or two people at the stand, at least the smaller numbers allow a more personal one on one approach to customers. Maybe we show try to have a few more talks again, even if its on older software - or maybe a QA session with all the traders and know-it-alls in attendance is a good idea? The one place that still seems to have the golden touch is North America. What can we learn from them? Well, having been at the two shows in Montreal and Washington, I would beg to differ. There is still a lot of interest in the QL there, but a lot of the QLers are finding it hard to get to shows, even the 1 per year. The USA is a big place. At both the shows I attended, there was maybe a dozen people (tops) there outside of the organisers and traders. I really missed the chance to meet Phoebus this year (we've had some great phone conversations in the past) but I couldn't afford it this year, only 6 weeks after becoming a dad. I didn't make enough to cover the cost of the accommodation let alone the plane tickets on both visits to the USA, but I went to meet people and holiday too, visiting Niagra Falls and Washington DC. Again, the guys out there are a great bunch of people and I dearly hope to make it next year with my family. What really gets to me though is that Quanta haven't taken the opportunity to do another big QL2000 style event next year - the year that the QL is 20 years old. It should have taken place on the launch day itself, 20 years to the day. I remember the QL2000 event with great pride, it was a huge success (and I made a profit!!), and that was because it was hyped up for months beforehand. I would love to see a huge event next year (maybe the AGM?) where we get the horizon centre or a similar venue again for a 2 day event and cram

Quite small - the face (front) is exactly the same same as a 3.5 floppy drive bay, so they will fit in one of these. However, they are not as deep or heavy, being only about a third as deep as a floppy drive - they go about 80mm (guess) back into the case. RE: [ql-users] reader question
The keyring thingys are getting cheaper all the time. They made 8Mb ones as the smallest when I got mine about a year ago, but now 32Mb seems to be the smallest as the prices have come down so much that an 8Mb one is no longer viable. A 32Mb one costs about the same as a similar sized CF card. Most of the online PC shops do them, like jungle.com or dabs.com or even amazon. The beauty of the small file sizes in the QL world (as compared to the PC bloatware files) means you can fit a VAST amount of stuff in 32Mb or 64Mb.. I have a fully bootable QL with all the extensions, loads of executable progs, docs, games, etc, even Qascade on mine with a few meg to spare. yes, this explanation is correct. I actually amend my Qcascade_rc file using a text editor. [ql-users] CF reader drives - Shameless Q-Celt Advert!!!
Just a quickie - for anyone thats interested, I have a few of the Compact Flash Reader drives remaining. These are the ones formerly sold by Phoebus Dokos. There are two varieties :- 1. The standard one, IDE Interface, same size as a floppy drive so fits in floppy drives bays of tower/desktop cases, and is fully useable with the QL - Qubide, Qx0, and QPC... No to mention PC's and Archimedes etc, etc...:-)) 2. The hot removable one, which is as above but allows the flash card to be removed and reinserted safely while the computer is still on, its a bit smaller too. The standard one is only 19 pounds Stg. inc. PP Worldwide, and the Hot-removable is only 29 pounds inc. PP. As I said, stocks are extremely limited (actually, I only found these few after a tidy up!!) so first come, first served. As far as I know, these are the last ones available anywhere. Re: [ql-users] Poison Pen Letter
This sounds decidedly weird - usually poison pen letters make direct insults and accusations at various people or an individual from an unknown entity (I work for a bank and we get a pile every week, which we generally ignore) - this just looks like someone is a bit annoyed at the fact that maybe two computer clubs are using the same hall maybe?? Must be one sad individual. How old was the Quanta issue? That will tell you if its probably a current member or not, though he/she/they could have got it anywherefrom a trader stall, a bring and buy stand or god knows where you might find one. It could also be quite innocent - a person maybe thought the bramerton club had been wrongly decribed in the newsletter, not realising the east anglia club was a different club entirely, and was just bringing it to syd's attention. Syd was, and maybe still is, a Member of Quanta - I remember buying an Amiga off him a few years ago, as he was moving into other things, but it had the QL emulator on it. Re: [ql-users] screenshoots ?

Well done ! I totally agree with that. As I told Dilwyn on a separate email, it's the second QL file manager that is usable (after PWFile) and the very first one that's really practical. With many apologies to any writers of filemanagers out there but nothing even comes close to Q-Trans. It's about time we had our own flavour of a Norton Commander-like file manager (like ie Windows Commander, Midnight Commander for UN*X etc). Now if I could only convince Dilwyn to let me on the sources to make it a total NC clone I would be the happiest man in the world...(Complete with all the function key commands). Hmmm maybe a ten part series of Articles on QLT for the manufacturing of a Lexan case for the SGC and the Q40 would be an even exchange? (Ooohhh now that's blackmail!) The ability to 'execute' programs, and the 'viewer' are both features that make it a very useful 'frontend', as well as a file transfer facilitator. Absolutely agree... Q-Trans rocks! Phoebus

Re: [ql-users] QPC on a Mac
I recall that myself and Ken Brickwood managed to get QPC running on an old Mac Powerbook belonging to Ken several years ago under Virtual PC - it was after a London show in his house and we had a few hours to kill. All I know is than it ran and was perfectly usable - it was QPC1 then, not QPC2 so it ran under DOS, not Windows. Of course, Virtual PC is now on Version 5, QPC is much better, and Macs have come a long way too... Ken now has an iBook - have you tried using it yet Ken under QPC2? Excellent Tony. Nice to hear something like this for a change. Have we truly forgotten why the hell we all keep this up? I haven't. I lug a huge bloody suitcase full of QL stuff across the Irish sea half a dozen times a year usually. I do it to help keep the QL scene alive, and to meet people I regard as close and dear friends. I repaired her QL (for the second time after a ten year gap), but forgot to tell her in advance that replacement mdv hardware was extra. I simply scribbled a note on the invoice saying something like that, and that it was her lucky day as she got it free. Incidentally the new membrane I fitted in 1990 was still in working order, though brittle. It supported my theory that the main reason membranes fail inside closed QLs is that the tails were bent very hard back on themselves by Thorn-EMI just as they emerge from under the metal plate. Give the tails a gentle curve and the membrane will last - even after it becomes brittle. Here is her reply: QUOTE Dear Sir, Forgive the formality. I don't know your name. I think you really should know just how much your cryptic message on my invoice (No. S07585) encouraged me. It came at a time when other things were not going well and my spirits were low. It was not just the sparing of my bank account, very welcome with Christmas galloping up, but the integrity and generosity translated into action and the humerous [sic] explanation. As an octogenarian I deeply appreciate that. Thank you very much. It is great to have my QL back in service. Yours sincerely, /QUOTE I cannot but think it good that she is not on the internet (she could have guessed 'tony' from my email) - but maybe she will read all about it in Quanta (8-(# -- QBBS (QL fido BBS 2:252/67) +44(0)1442-828255 tony@surname.demon.co.uk http://www.firshman.co.uk Voice: +44(0)1442-828254 Fax: +44(0)1442-828255 TF Services, 29 Longfield Road, TRING, Herts, HP23 4DG
