RE: [RCSE] Further 2-Meters thoughts

2006-08-01 Thread Jared
We tried this a while back (with a Gentle Lady). Things were looking up.
We had some new members join and a lot of the club members picked up a GL
and got her ready to fly. Unfortunately we seemed to have a problem finding
a good day to organize the contest/fun fly. We would have a couple of
people show up, or it would be too windy, seemed like everything kept
getting in our way.

We made the rules pretty simple. Pretty much a stock Gentle Lady, with
minimal kit bashing allowed. No spoilers (the model could have them, but
they were to be taped down for the contest) and we had a minimum and maximum
weight. We also allowed ballast as long as it was under the max weight, as
well as changing the wing hold down to 2 cross posts rather than the
standard GL wing hold down. No composites were allowed other than a small
amount of glass to reinforce the wing at the center section. We even got
the LHS here to discount the model for club members!

I think it's a good idea, and I hope the club here decides to pick it back
up again.

Depending upon the age of the flyers I think DLG/HLG one design makes a
better entry point than a 2M or 3M for a one design contest, unfortunately
DLGs are generally more expensive and take more time to setup...but it seems
like when I fly my DLG I get a lot more people that are interested vs when I
fly something larger off a winch or high start. It seems like there is more
interest in DLGs for younger flyers, but the skills needed to set one up and
fly it properly are a little more advanced than a Gentle Lady.

Jeff,

I may be way off base (and I'm sure you all will let me know) but I thing a
revival of the one design low cost model contest would do more than anything
we are now doing to get new and young pilots into the hobby. Even if it was
a Spirit, Vista, or Fling 2M ARF type of model that would be an affordable
entry for the new blood. If AMA or LSF would promote the idea of clubs
having a once a week or month one design fly/contest it would give a venue
for the new flyers. It could also be a real eye opener for the completive
fliers. It would promote a leveling of the field to see who is the best
pilot and thermal reader with the same basic low cost equipment (no pic's).
It would be nice to see who can fly without a voice in the ear telling them
where the lift is.

John

P.S. If anyone in LOFT would like to start a Wednesday night one-design fly
let me know. I see where Tower Hobby has several entry-level ARF's that
would be an easy and fast way to start.

Ok, lets dispel the cost issue. There is a minor difference in cost for
a RES two meter vs RES unlimited. either can be inexpensive or expensive
(AVA like)
There is a minor diff in cost for a full house 2m vs a full house unlimited.
apples to apples.

there is a larger diff between a res and anything full house.

Competition makes you a better pilot. Competition can be great fun if
you understand you will win and lose. Not everyone will be JW's or DP's,
get over it and have some fun.

THE HOBBY NEEDS MORE YOUTHS!!!

Ed Wilson and the rest of the LASS club have done a great thing in
supporting Lee. There is a good amount of time and effort being put into
that young guy and it doesn't go unnoticed.
I think we are all appreciative. Lee may be the next generation of
fliers to carry the torch that allows the legacy of soaring to continue...

Ben Wilson wrote:

I don't think that 2-meter is in jeopardy, though I would like to make
a few points to reinforce it's importance in the overall soaring world:

 1. This hobby needs more youth(s) to continue to grow.

 2. Youths (and many new soarers) don't have the experience or the
 money to fly big ships.

 3. Soaring is and will remain a hobby where competition is part and
 parcel of the experience.

 4. 2-meter at the NATS allows those new fliers to compete at a
national level in an event that they alone (and not their plane) are
 the determining factor.

Ed Wilson achieved something special this year: he mentored a young
dude with a small ship (but big dreams) with the intention of taking
him to the NATS. It's a great goal, and one that we think will keep
Lee and others like him in this hobby. 2-meter at the NATS is the
perfect event to show new fliers what soaring is all about.

Since we already have, and will hopefully continue to have, a 2-meter
competition -- all we need is more Lee's, right? :)

RE: [RCSE] Re: new batteries

2005-04-08 Thread Jared
At first I was a little disappointed when I first realized that LiPos take
more than an hour to charge. I figured that if I was charging at 1C then
they would take 1 Hour to charge...makes sense right?

Well, as stated below my normal charge time varies between 70-90 minutes.
Generally it's right at 89 minutes every time. After about 2 minutes the
battery starts to charge at 1C (I guess the charger has to figure out some
stuff first...) It stays at 1C for probably about 45 minutes or more then
drops down to about .5C. From there it steadily drops. Once it hits the 45
minute mark the charger is showing that the pack has a voltage of 12.6V (3S
pack). It stays around 12.59-12.60 for the rest of the charge.

It would be nice to have batteries that don't weigh as much as NiMH or NiCd
that pack just as much punch. What would be even better is if these
batteries charged just as fast as NiCds and didn't explode :)

 No, that's not quite right.

I'm not aware of any LiPo cells that allow charging over a 1C rate.
So you charge at 1C for the first while, and then once the battery
gets mostly full the charge rate slows down.

Assuming you're starting with an empty battery (as empty as it can
safely be), and set your charger at the 1C rate, after 30 minutes the
battery is 50% charged. After 45 minutes it's 75% charged. But soon
 after the charge rate slows.

Eventually the battery is 100% charged, but it took more than an hour.
 More like 90 minutes.

RE: [RCSE] Movie review

2005-01-30 Thread Jared
Lol! Speaking of dead stick landings...

I did my first over Thanksgiving. I was up in CO Springs visiting my
girlfriend's parents. Her step dad was just getting into power and asked me
to help trim out his plane. Never having flown a plane with a prop before I
said Sure.

We got to the field and talked to some of the guys out there. They asked me
if I had flown before and I replied I've never flown power. We were
instructed to go to the bad runway away from everyone else.

Take off was fine. Engine cut off about 45 seconds later. He noticed the
prop had stopped spinning and yelled Dead stick!!! (I thought something
was wrong when applying throttle had no effect...) I have never seen people
run for cover so quickly!

Brought it back to the field and touched down about 1 foot past the
grass...rolled about 10 feet to a stop.

People saw it, some applauded. He even has it on video :)

Just go out there again and kill the motor on purpose when there are lots of
people out there :)

Yeah is Howard was the stud everyone thought he was he would have done a
dead stick landing.

And speaking of which, I did my first dead stick landing last week on my
pattern plane. It was perfect, approach, landing, rollout. Probably the
best landing I have every made. And there was not a single other person at
the field. I hate this hobby.

2005-01-30 Thread Jared
I love my Blaster, had some initial problems with it...all more my fault
than the planes. Once my RX gets back from JR it will be up in the air
again!

The plane launches extremely well and it's exceptionally nimble. Mine
weighs in at 10.2oz (it's actually 11.1 now with the altimeter installed)

I'll probably be ordering another wing from Barry once he gets some in.
Mine is getting beat up from bad catches and not so great landings.

Blaster DLGs

Got out and tossed mine a few more times in the wind rain and cold, and it
is amazing. The thing covers ground like a rocket and I managed to hook up
in some air indicated by inland Seagulls before I left the field.. Camber
makes it just simply bouyant.

I know nothing of DLG's but I am getting to know this plane and to me it
flys like a mini Pike (my contest partner of choice:-).

I am still amazed at its durability...practicing inverted hand catches again
in a cold wind with rain probably is not a good idea for a DLG pretender!
But it still looking new!

So why the wait and wail..? Barry will be going to AZ and its likely that
there will be plenty of guys fun chucking DLGs there..and once they hear
about it down on the farmexpect back orders when you don't want yours to
be.

Heck, Barry was watching me chuck today and a young guy came by and wrote
him a check for one!

RE: [RCSE] JR 610 Problems

2005-01-26 Thread Jared
Thanks to everyone who replied!

I tried all of the suggestions and it seems like I have a bad RX.

Swapped XTAL - about the same range...no noticeable improvement.
Lengthened Antenna - a little better...now about 15' on the range check.

I also tested to make sure the radio was o.k. I brought out another plane
with a JR 770 in it...I probably walked a good 75' or so before things
started to get shaky!

Just for kicks I removed the antenna from the plane and placed it at a 90*
angle to the ground (which should be the best angle for the radio waves)
still had about the same range.

After a couple of tosses, I noticed that the servos were jittering when the
plane was about 50' away with the antenna on the TX up...I can't believe I'm
actually flying this RX in my Blaster!

Looks like I'll be contacting JR. Glad to hear they have great customer
service!

Thanks again!
Jared

Yes its a known issue.

Flip yours over. If there's no blue QC dot on the case its one of the
original versions (short antenna, less selective filtering); send it in!

I have one of these. Lousy range and lots of jitter *until* I sent it in to
Horizon's service center. Upon its return I installed it into my Wizard

RE: [RCSE] servo-receiver behavior question

2005-01-26 Thread Jared
Scobie -
Here is my guess...and this is just a guess.

The servos require a certain amount of voltage to work. Moving the servo
puts a load on the battery and causes the voltage to drop a little bit.
Once the load is taken off of the battery, the voltage will jump up a little
bit.

So, if you're at the limits of what it takes to move the servo:
The servo starts to move then pulls down the battery too low for the servo
to move.

Once the servo is no longer putting a load on the battery the pack starts to
go up in voltage.

The threshold for the servo voltage is met and the servo starts to move
again.

This could also be a function of the voltage the RX needs to work as well.
If the RX is powering on and off because of the servo load you'll experience
the same problem.

Most receivers require less voltage to work than servos do...at least in my
experience. It's always a good idea to stop flying when you have these
issues :-)

Subject: [RCSE] servo-receiver behavior question

Ok,
so,
when an onboard battery pack winds down to nearly exhausted, and the servos
start to get erratic, meaning they start moving to do the requested motion,
but only get part way there, then quit, then jump the rest of the way,
perhaps in two or three of these steps for a full deflection, what exactly
is going on?

Is this the servo simply demanding more power than the battery can provide?
Why isn't the servo simply slowing way way down, as opposed to jerking in
steps to its destination?

Does the receiver have any role in creating this erratic motion? Is the
receiver somehow cutting in and out or is this familiar behavior just a
symptom of how the power demands cycle between the servos and the battery?

Thanks for insight from anyone with more mastery of electronic interactions
than I have (which is an awful lot like just saying anyone)

Dudes:

My mother-in-law is going to be out of town for the holidays, so she
stopped by tonight to give the family Christmas gifts. She gave me this
electric model plane that I have not heard of before, and I hang out in a lot
of hobby shops. It is sort of toy-like but maybe interesting.

Made by Silverlit Industries. Called an X-Plane. All EPP, with a
tractor prop mounted on the vertical stab. (!?) A 27 mhz TX, with 3 channels,
sort of, elevator on the left stick, rudder on the right stick, throttle on a
button somewhere, and a digital camera that tucks into a sort of bomb bay. OK,
maybe its 4 channels, if you count the digital camera/bomb bay thingy.

They got a website, Silverlit-flyingclub.com but it is written by somebody
who learned English by reading the instructions to Korean built microwave
ovens. And by this I mean no disrespect to either Koreans or microwave ovens.

Anyway, do I take this thing out of the box and mess with it, or try to

RE: [RCSE] Cold Heat

2004-12-17 Thread Jared
Wouldn't a better alternative just be a 12V one you can plug into your
cigarette lighter or bring along a small 12V lead acid battery? I wouldn't
think that a tiny battery would be able to supply that much soldering
time...even if it uses a controlled short.

One of the guys I fly with has a tiny covering iron that uses 12V. It works
great...and gets plenty hot in about a minute. I had to use it once when
some covering came off of my plane...did the trick. I've used 12V soldering
irons before and they work well, not like a 110V one...but they do the
trick. I've seen them up to 30Watts and they probably make bigger ones too.

If you take an AC inverter with you - you can use a soldering iron or gun at
the field.
Much better than other methods.

RE: [RCSE] Mylars?

2004-11-30 Thread jared
An iron works great! Put it on a low setting...about 50% power or so...I put
them in between a t-shirt, so that I don't scratch them. Apply a LOT of
pressure when ironing them, and make sure that you keep the iron moving. If
you don't you can add other waves that you will need to get out.

I've been using an iron for the past couple of months and haven't had any issues
with it... You can pickup t-shirt material by the yard at wal-mart or where
ever. If you can't find it then drop by the bedding area and pickup some
jersey knit sheets to do the job :) it's easier if you work in small sections
or just work with the cutout mylar rather than trying to flatten the entire
roll. You need to be able to work the entire piece at the same time, otherwise
you'll get warps b/c of the heating differrences.

Jared

Quoting Phil Barnes [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

does anyone have a trick for taking
the curl out of mylars before you first use them?

 I recently answered this in an email so here is that response;

I always immediately take the roll of mylar out of the box, stand it on end
and then expand the roll to about a one foot diameter and then just let it
stand on the floor that way.

I think the problem may happen when the mylar is rolled tightly and then
left in a box in a hot truck or warehouse somewhere before you get it. If
you are unfortunate enough to get a batch of mylar like that then you will
have to try and uncurl it. The following is a summary of recent messages in
the SALglider group (message numbers 7262,7262,7264,7267)
 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SALglider/messages

 1) I've heard from someone but can't recall who. You could flatten them
out by ironing them on a flat bench. You need a tissue between, not
to scratch the surface. I haven't tried it myself so no garantee.

 2) I used a heat gun to gently warm them. They flatten out fine.
 Tom

 3) I had some luck putting 16x 48 curled mylars in a large basin like a
bath tub and pouring boiling water to cover them.

I never found a good way to uncurl mylar myself but those three suggestions
come from other guys who have.

If you don't/can't uncurl the mylar then you will have to live with the
curly mylar or buy some new mylar. There are ways of dealing with curly
 mylar.

The curl causes problems when you do layups. To avoid that problem you can
stick the mylar down to the bench with 3M77. The curly mylar is also hard to
paint since it won't stay put in a spray booth. You can fix that problem by
taping spruce sticks to the back of the mylar to hold them flat while you
spray them. Other than that there really isn't any trouble from curly
 mylars.

[RCSE] First Plane

2004-11-30 Thread Jared
I have been interested in Aviation for quite some time, but I havent flown
until comparatively recently.

My first plane was a Spirit. It was purchased (as a kit) when I was 13 (1993,
Im currently 24). I assembled the kit in the woodshop at my parents house
and covered it as well (all white) Unfortunately I didnt have a job, or any
source of income so I had no way to put a radio or electronics in it. So it
hung from the ceiling of my bedroom for many years.

Until I was a freshman in high school. I was over at a friends house and I
noticed he had a remote control planeit was a Cox something or other, had a
.049, and a working radio system! I asked him if he was flying it and he said
noso later that day we stripped the gear out of his plane and installed it
into mine. He had never really flown beforeand neither had Iafter
reading the manual about 200 times we decided to go out into the front yard and
give it a tossI made sure everything was balanced and checked all the
control surfaces to make sure it was setup to the manufacturers specs.
First toss and it glided about 20 before gently settling on the ground!
SUCCESS! We picked it up again and tossed it with a little more
forceWHAMstraight into the ground Eventually I repaired it and
recovered the entire plane (transparent blue) It never flew againI had the
plane until my sophomore year of college, always hanging over my bedhaunting
me and reminding me to fly it one daywhen I moved from that apartment I left
it behind and now some one else has (had) it.

I stayed out of flying for a couple of years (not that I ever REALLY flew) and
then one day about 2 years ago I was talking to my girlfriend about needing a
hobbythe ominous hanging plane jumped into my head and I though, THATS
IT! Its inexpensive (I know better now!) and lots of fun! (still true
 )

Picked up a Spirit Elite kit (along with a new radio), assembled and covered it
and had it ready to fly in about 3 weeks. Took it out to the field and
launched it off of a weak hi start a couple of times with no help (bad idea!)
Ended up almost hitting one of the guys that I fly with (sorry Tony) and
slammed the plane into the ground. So what took 3 weeks to build and about
$200 was destroyed in about 30 minutesafter that incident I was advised to
get a simulatorwhich I did, picked up a Spirit Elite ARF, and studied up on
how to fly.

Since then I have been flying as much as school and work allow me to. Tony is
still my (and others) favorite target at the field

RE: [RCSE] Blaster and Other DLG Opinions

2004-11-12 Thread Jared
Hey All,
Just wanted to say thanks for all the info about DLGs.

I ended up getting a Blaster. Price and availability are the 2 main factors
that decided it for me, but in retrospect it was definitely the right
decision.

The AUW on mine is 10.5oz…that’s flying weight, with .75oz in the nose for
balance. I used a JR610, 300mAh 1/3AA pack, and the new Dymond D4.7 servos.
The servos are pretty impressive! They weigh 4.7grams and have 20oz/in
torque!

A friend and I took it out on Wednesday and it flew VERY well. Fast,
responsive, and it showed even the lightest lift instantly. We didn't fly
too long, I had other obligations, and the range check was pretty bad
(antenna inside of the carbon boom.) The antenna is now fixed and the plane
will receive a new range check and more flight time tomorrow. Other than
the range issue it flew great, the plane indicated lift multiple times but
b/c of the range issue we decided to keep it close! It even looked decent
in sink. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering a
competitive DLG in the future.

Anyways, thanks to everyone that replied.

Thanks for the reply.

Photon II looks nice but not exactly what
Im looking for.

It needs to be under 13ozs AUW (preferably
under 11 or 12) and an aileron model.

Anyone have any experience with the
Absolut? I have heard it is heavy (13+ozs) can anyone confirm the AUW?

The models Im considering are:

Blaster (looks the best so far)

Absolut

Fireworks III (not sure how VAT works but
Im guessing this will probably be out of my price range)

It doesnt have to be a moldieall these 3
just happen to be

Thanks again!

[RCSE] Supra Pod

Hi All,
This probably isn’t the best place to post this…but I’ve already tried in

Does anyone know of a source for the Supra Pod? I'm getting ready to start
on one (well, in a month or 2) and some people in my club are interested in
building one as well. I could make a mold but I really don't want to put
THAT much time into it.

RE: [RCSE] Broadband Over Powerline approved

2004-10-17 Thread Jared
Doesn't the wireless company have a duty of sorts to stay out of
frequencies they're not assigned? I won't pretend to know much about this
topic, but I thought that if they were found interfering with other
frequencies they could be fined a considerable amount. Not to say that this
completely keeps them from bleeding over into adjacent frequencies.

Also if your plane was shot down b/c of this type of interference wouldn't
you have recourse against the provider interfering on your channel since
they don't have the license to use it? I guess technically we don't have a
license to use it other than that it's reserved for RC use. But I would
think that if they're interfering with non-RC related equipment, on
frequencies reserved for RC use, that they would be found at fault.

RE: [RCSE] Growing list. Inbox Filters

2004-07-15 Thread Jared
Personally I like the e-mail format. You can already view (and I believe
post) to this list, in a forum like environment, form rcgroups.com.
Personally I like having all of the e-mail, and it's more convenient than a
forum.

The only things that I don't currently like about the list are the problems
that face all of the users...mainly the viruses, and the occasional spam.
The viruses are promptly deleted (either by myself or my Anti-virus) as is
the spam...The spam doesn't really bother me since it only comes through
about once a week...and it's generally only one e-mail.

I wish they could do something about the viruses. Maybe update their list
manager software to have a built in scanner or something, that removes
infected messages.

Anyways, just my $0.02. The main thing I like about this format is not
having to wade through a forum to find new or interesting posts...they're
waiting for me right when I open Outlook :) Call me lazy if you will...

I now have 3 filters in place. Due to the limitations of the old
software on
my old email computer I have no other choice but to delete emails from
Orman, mrmaseratiman or sneidley directly from my ISP server. A
better
computer would have more options but this one doesn't.

Perhaps it is time to seriously reconsider the format of this list.
Once before, I brought up the question of whether a forum format would
not prove to be more useful, consume less bandwidth, and require less
inbox maintenance on the part of the lists customers. Now, with
spam-mail appearing to have become unstoppable, we need to start
thinking outside the box. A forum format would defeat the e-mail
spammers as nothing would get sent by e-mail. I belong to a variety of
internet forums and I have not seen any virus-spam-mail in the forums
that I belong to.

Just to review the advantages of using a forum format:
- consumes less bandwidth, only the messages that the customer wants to
read are downloaded
- organizes all replies to a topic into a single thread that can easily
be read in part or its entirty without searching
- requires less inbox maintenance on the part of the customer.
Topics/replies that are of no interest to the reader would not even have
to be downloaded. (thus eliminating the need to download all the ...
so there, Gordy replies)
- potentially eliminates the incidence of virus-spam-mail
- the ability to go back and edit posts that contained erroneous
information - as opposed to e-mail, which, when sent, is unretrievable
- an advantage for the list providers is the ability to sell advertising
space on the forum's web-page. Don't have a cow on this one - there is
nothing wrong with advertising. Advertising is how we find out about
new products. I spend as much time reading ads in magazines as I do
articles.

Disadvantages of going to a forum format:
- change - some people hate change

Me? I embrace change as long as the benefits outweigh the costs.

Right now, the costs of downloading all of the list's e-mails over 28.8k
dial-up (upgrading is not possible), spending time searching through
reply after reply after reply for topics of interest, spending time
deleting e-mails in which I have no interest, etc., etc., etc., is
outweighing the benefit I receive from the one or two threads per week
that are of interest and use to me. I am seriously considering whether
I intend to remain subscribed to this list. Don't get me wrong - I
would really like to get those topics, I would just prefer to do so
without wading through all of the other stuff.

I expect to get my fair share of flames on this, but that is of no
concern to me as I only expressing my opinion and have no intention of
debating the subject. Just remember, getting the last word in doesn't
necessarily mean you're right.

Regards,
Marty Timm

SmartPropo is available at:

Just follow the instructions to install it...you just need the DLL that matches
your TX. For the Futaba ones you have to make a cable...but I believe the
instructions are on the site and fairly straight forward. As I said below get
the PCM one if your TX does PCM...works much better than the PPM one
(considering I couldn't get the PPM one to work at all!)

Speaking of FMS...for all you JR guys out there...there is a nice little
program called SmartPropo. It allows you to plug in your TX to your
 line in
on your pc...just using a standard mono audio cable. I couldn't get the
 PPM
version of SmartPropo working...but I switched my 8103 over to SPCM and
 it
 worked great!

Anyways, just wanted to let you all know...I'm not affiliated with
SmartPropo in any way...just think it's awesome software especially for
 the
price...FREE! It's nice to have a PC transmitter for the price of a
 1/8
 mono cable :)

I have added more LET planes designed by my customer Ken Leamy for the
 FMS
 free flight sim. To catch up folks who did not get previous messages;
 Ken is
a programmer and 3D model maker who has graciously offered to write sim
models of selected LET scale sailplanes for FMS. They fly much better
 than
any other sailplanes in FMS and we have tried as much as possible to
 have
them emulate the models they represent. The new molded ASH-26 is
particularly fun to fly. Ken even included scale pushrod exits and wing
 tip
wheels on his model. This plane is fully aerobatic in the sim version,
perhaps slightly more than the real 6 meter version but very realistic.
Rolls are very accurately executed. Turn up the thermals and launch from
 a
slope landscape for rip it up fun.

[RCSE] Fuselage Finishing Web Sites

2004-05-22 Thread Jared
Wow.today must be a good day for flying.RCSE is pretty quiet! Unfortunately
the wind is beating us down. We need a nice South facing slope!

So here's a quick question. I have a Condor fuse as I mentioned earlier,
but I've never finished a raw fuse like this before. Anyone know of some
good websites that have some pics and a good walkthrough showing how to size
the rudder post...install the servo tray, bell crank, cut the wing bolt
holes, etc, etc?

Thanks again!

RE: [RCSE] foam cutter DC vs AC

2004-05-11 Thread Jared
I use a transformer for cutting and haven't shocked myself yet. I touch the
wire often on my CNC machine to clean it...I use a socket light dimmer that
I got from home depot and plug the transformer into that. So I'm varying
the primary side of the transformer...which in turn varies the secondary
side. The transformer I have has a secondary tap that I use for small bows
and I use the full 24v for larger bows.

It works well and is pretty cheap :)

Even though this shouldn't shock you it's still not a good idea to grab the
wire...if you're cleaning it with steel wool put something between you and
the steel wool...like a plastic bag or something nonconductive.

Use a transformer to provide isolation from the mains, and to work
with a lower voltage. Here's a wiring example:
http://www.charlesriverrc.org/articles/tools/joedydruliafoamcutterps.htm
Make sure the dimmer can handle inductive loads (motors, like fans).
Don't forget a fuse!

A car battery can provide an awful lot of current when shorted, so
a fuse is necessary. To adjust the temperature, you need a variable
load resistor, which gets very hot. Make sure not to let the voltage
on the battery drop too low (keeping it on charge works).

It is possible to use an automotive lead-acid charger in start/manual
mode with a light dimmer powering it. Though this won't work with all
chargers and dimmers.

This is a message I posted on E-flight might be of use here.

Hello All,
Some of you may know this, but just in case. 3M still makes the old
77. Here is the message I got back from them when we ran out here at work.

3M Super 77 has had a few formulation changes. These changes were in
order to meet government VOC standards. We currently sell two versions
of 3M Super 77 - the original classic version stock number is
62-4437-4930-4 and the current formulation for 3M Super 77 Low VOC is
62-4977-4930-9

I have been able to order a few as two cans at a time from some places.

[RCSE] Radio Suggestions and why?

2003-09-22 Thread Jared
I'm looking for a decent radio for sailplanes. Currently I have a
Futaba 6XAS and it has served me fairly well. It's limited, but for the
most part it gets the job done. Currently I fly a 4 servo Lucia and a 6
servo Spirit Elite, but in the future I would like to get a more full
house sailplane and still be able to use the radio with all of the
models.

I have been looking at the JR8103 and the Futaba 9C. Most of the guys
that I fly with fly the JR so I realize programming would be made easier
(having a vast pool of knowledge always does help out.)

Currently the list of features that I (think I) need is:
Flaps or Crow
Reflex
Camber
Flaps - Aileron Mixing
Aileron - Flap Mixing
Aileron - Rudder mixing
Launch Presets

And probably some others. Both of the radios will do these with no
problems. Both offer digital trims.

So in your opinion which radio is better suited to sailplanes? Are they
both essentially the same thing just wrapped in different packages or
does one truly offer something that the other doesn't?

I'll be looking forward to your input.

If you have another suggestion for a TX in about the same price range
please feel free to let me know, I'm open for suggestions.

RE: [RCSE] ARF problems

Interesting that you bring up the Ava. One of the guys that I fly with
has this plane and he has been fighting with one of his wing tips for
some time. He has tried to re-epoxy it, added a stronger joiner, and I
believe he is still having some problems with it.

After hearing about all the ARF BOT planes breaking on the winch, I have
also
heard about the AVA RES planes at the nats breaking on the launch.
Today at
a contest, I watched first hand, a brand new AVA, first launch ever,
blow the
tips off on a mild launch, and mild zoom, by an experienced flyer. The
wing
tips failed at the factory built outer joint, where there is a tiny
short
joiner, (not robust like the BOT :-) splitting the wood and carbon out.
I am so
glad I saved my $700.00 I was going to spend on one, until they are
fixed
correctly. At least with the BOT ARF, the cost is $135.00 with discount

certificate. The AVA evidently has a problem too. The structure where
the tips are
factory attached is way too weak. IMHO (and others) . Bill G.

RE: [RCSE] Re: virus

2003-08-20 Thread Jared
Get a good AntiVirus program if you don't already have one, and BE SURE
to update it on a regular basis. I use Norton Anti Virus Corporate
Edition at work and just regular Norton Anti Virus at home. I have
received tons and tons of e-mails with the virus but the anti virus
software has stopped them all.

It will be interesting to see how long this thing runs rampant before
some one finally figures out how to put a stop to it.

Our network activity is really high on the POP3 port (Ethernet port that
is used for receiving e-mail) I don't even want to venture how many of
these our server is blocking. But the network traffic is much higher
than it usually is.
