Subject: [RCSE] A Christmas Carol

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the 'net,
not a hard drive was whirring, it was quiet, you bet!

When out of the modem there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to my keyboard to see what was the matter.

I booted the system and, and logged on to my sevice,
I downloaded E-mail of volumes quite perverse.

All postings were WACO, a name that's stupendous
for stating the facts in ways that offend us.

He cursed and he ranted, he call us bad names,
and he made lots of fun of our silly airplanes.
On Lucas, on Sal, on Richard, and Phil,
on Gordon, on Daryl, on Steve and on Bill,

he piled his abuse til they all had their fill.

He's been hiding in Utah and hanging with Mormons,
designing new stuff with a big box of Crayons.

He's merry and laughing about things that aren't funny,
and he's planning a new way to take all our money.

He showed me the drawings for things quite outrageous
and he cackled and howled, he might be contageous!

I shuddered and grimaced and whimpered in fear.
Could this be our fate for the coming New Year?

In panic I logged off to end this attack,
and his last words still haunt me. He said,

"I'll be back!"

-

Merry Christmas to the Christians, Happy Hanukkah to the Jews, Muslims and
Kwanza celebrators, enjoy the Government holidays.

[RCSE] [rcse] My first sailplane

2006-06-30 Thread Tom H. Nagel

My first sailplane was a Goldberg Sophisticated Lady,
which eventually came to be called "The Crunchbird."  Maybe you know the
joke.

    The Crunchbird is still probably
flyable, just needing a battery and receiver, but I use its two meter wing every
once in a while on my Miss 2.1, when I want to thermal the boxy electric
monoplane.

I still remember Hugh Roger's comment
about the Sophisticated Lady:  "They ought to make T-tails illegal!"

Most blacklists like the CSMA blacklist automatically de-list entries
that haven't been reported again within 48 hours. This varies from
blacklist-to-blacklist, but 48 hours seems to be the going rate.

Another great blacklist search tool is the CompleteWhois Multi-RBL
(relay block list) Lookup:

http://www.completewhois.com/rbl_lookup.htm

You can search a huge list of blacklists all at once... very nice.

Dan is correct about the Easy Star. I taught my brother in law to fly on
one of those. I would recommend making the rudder bigger by adding a piece
of thin plastic until the rudder was twice its current width. It will turn

RE: [RCSE] (RCSE) New Soarer

2005-08-23 Thread George Voss
Mike, we're happy to have you on board! There are some better entry level
electric planes than the Endurance. The Endurance was designed for those
who already know how to fly.

The best advice anyone can give you is to get with some locals that fly
sailplanes. Most major cities have glider clubs, and if not, then several
modelers who fly sailplane in an 'unorganized' fashion. What city are you
in? Hopefully someone on this list can contact you and show you the ropes
before you plop down your hard earned $.

As for your first sailplane, the Gentle Lady ARF or the Spirit ARF are good
entry level planes. They are not electrics though.

[RCSE] [RCSE[ Estate Planning

2005-08-08 Thread Tom H. Nagel

Guys:

I am a practicing lawyer of the general
practice persuasion, and when not making trouble on RCSE I do a significant
amount of estate planning for "regular folks."

    Some basic advice:
      have a will
don't get sucked in by a
"trust mill"--most people don't need a trust, and most people that have one
manage to screw them up before dying.
  you should have a living
will and health care power of attorney
   lots of stuff passes
by contract or survivorship, meaning your will has little or nothing to say
about where this stuff goes.   Make sure you know how your
"non-probate" stuff is set up, since it is probably most of what you are
worth.  Examples:   life insurance, joint bank accounts,
retirement, payable-on death provisions in bank accounts, joint ownership if
brokerage accounts, joint and survivorship deeds for real estate.

Wills and stuff are controlled by STATE
law, so check with your local counsel.   There are some oddball state
provisions.   In Ohio, for example, a surviving spouse can take two
cars and a boat and an outboard motor without going through probate court.

At least one of the older members of my
RC soaring club has a provision in his will that calls on the club to auction
off his RC stuff amongst ourselves and put the money into the club
treasury.    We have already done this for one other
member since I have been flying, and I can tell you we treasure those
items.

Finally, there was a good article about
wills, estates and "our stuff" in the AMA magazine in the last couple of
years.   Check it out.

    Oh yeah:   try not to
die.

My first AMA number was 20511 in about 1957. Later as a Contest Director my
number was 2054. In the years of high taxes and great write-offs I obtained
L96 - it reads the same regardless of direction.

Skye Malcolm and I met at the Franklin County
Fairgrounds for an impromptu NYD fly-in.   Skye was just back from
Arizona and was wearing shorts and tennis shoes, so we didn't last too
long.

    Sky had found an upgraded
ZingWing out west, one of those foamy flying wings that folds in half and
launches with a big rubber band.   This one was higher aspect ratio
and bigger span and will undoubtedly disappear into the first thermal of the new
year.  Today we just had clouds and drizzle.

We flew the Miss 2.1 a
little,  and that was very nice.  We even did a runway takeoff and
landing.

I tried to fly the Silverlit
Friggin Industries X-Plane.   That little monster is going back for a
refund tomorrow, so help me Dave Thornburg.    Gordy, you do NOT want
one  of these for your kid.  It is not safe nor reliable.  Mine
has intermittent power glitches that I can't fix because none of the guts are
user accessible.  The propellor propels itself off the shaft and goes
flying away when you rev up the motor, and  the range check today failed at
about ten feet.  I could go on and on but instead I am just going back to
the customer service desk.

2004-12-02 Thread MerrellAnd
Thanks Bill,

Sorry I didn't mention that.  I've actually flew the plane and did some extensive range checks before.  Not a proximity effect in this case and range was fine.

I've since removed the rx in preparation to send it in to FMA.  I also was able to swap crystals (same channel though) with the same result.

Merrell

How close are you to  the plane/Rx with the Tx?  I've seen exactly the same thing if the Tx and the Rx are too close, i.e. a few feet, but it stops if the Tx moves away.  Anything over 10 feet and it should be dead solid.

Just a thought.

Are the HITEC's digital?

1)
Sometimes nearby noise sources (flourescent lighting, electric fans,
appliances, etc) generate enough EMI/RFI to cause this. RX swamping (AGC can
not compensate enough) by a TX that is too close can also do this (it may show
up in one servo, or all, or one of a different brand, etc).
2)
Depends on the above, if you move the TX away in a quiet environment, do the
jitters go away?
3)
Too tough to call based on the info, unless you have an identical unit to test
back-to-back...

Yup. It shouldn't be assumed that because the radio has some
pre-defined functionality, you have to take what the mfr has set up for
you. Mike Lachowski, Jim Bacus & I have nearly the same functionality
for landing setup, but three different approaches to programming that
functionality.

After a pretty short learning curve, you can easily build a new setup
from scratch without copying in 15-20 minutes.

I'm sure that there are lots of worthy radios, but the 10x certainly
can do anything/everything that I've been able to think of. Figuring
out how to do that anything/everything is pretty easy and can be
accomplished in a variety of ways. And hey, Joe Himself, Curtis
Youngblood and Quique Somenzini use it too, so it can't be all bad.

the only glider they had on the shelves, the Sophisticated Lady.

I learned to build, repair, and slope with the SL. Lots and Lots of
repair. I added shear webs when it became clear that the wing was too weak
for even a decent high start. I added winglets as an experiment, and
never took them off. The Crunchbird is still in the hangar and needs only
a battery and radio to go up again.

Re: [RCSE] [RCSE]Vulture Vario

2003-10-20 Thread John Erickson
A cousin of mine who is an ornithologist at Cornell told me there is a pack
mentality with many of the raptors. They see other birds circling and they
go check it out.

That being said, watching a hawk thermal on their own you know they are
doing more than just looking around for signs of lift. He explains it by
hypothesizing that they are just extremely sensitive to movement across
their wings. They learn to soar, so over time they know what "14th feather
on the left going up" means.

[RCSE] RCSE & RCSD

2003-09-15 Thread Jim Deck
OK, so maybe the pictures aren't National Geographic quality and the
editorial content leaves something to be desired, but RCSD still fills a
niche. It was here long before "Quiet Flyer" and "Quiet and Electric
Flight" came into existence and was borne out of a desire to provide the R/C
soaring community with information. When it was first published, R/C soaring
information had been relegated to columns in magazines filled with engine
and propeller advertisements. Over the years, it has done just that, often
on a shoestring. I, personally found this issue's account of the young lady
BUILDING and flying her modified 2x6 a refreshing change from the recurring
accounts of stuffing expensive servos into the latest expensive moldie in
most of the other publications. The young lady is a true "woodcrafter".
Did you check out her next project?
RCSE sprang into existence for many of the same reasons - an exclusive
place for R/C soarers to almost instantaneously exchange information. It,
too, has served admirably over its lifespan. There's room in my world for
both.

[RCSE] (RCSE) KV Discus(El servo) question

2003-07-10 Thread Easwen6877
Fellow soaring enthusiasts,

I have a Karel Vagenknecht Discus 2B, 4.3M span all molded plane that I just started putting together.  The Elevator is operated by a servo made to be placed in the tail. The molded in area for that servo limits the depth of servo used, or it will protrude into the rudder leading edge.
Anyone know what servo they used? Needs to be slightly bigger than the Volz micro-max I wanted to use, but case depth needs to be less.

[RCSE] RCSE back Issues

2002-10-15 Thread d. o. darnell

Hi, All

I've got a stack of about 150 RCSD's 1987 up through Sept 2000. Most
issues included, a few missing.
I, like many others, learned what the "big guys" were doing and the latest
tips and tricks from within the pages of the Radio Control Soaring
Digest. I even contributed a few articles. This little mag is unique in
the world. I've read and reread the issues many times. They have been
living in a corner of my shop and need a new home. If you care to review
the history of R/C Soaring in the U.S., this is the definitive source. I
was going to write a book, but don't seem to have the time. Maybe you
do. Here's the info you need to help you do it.

If you have any interest in them, please make me an offer. I'm definatly
going to sell them to the highest bidder.
I'm thinking that winning bid will be in the $50 area. I take MC and VISA
as well as PayPal. You'll pay shipping which, I would estimate, to be ~ $10.

Sorry for being "commercial" but I do deal other stuff. Rarely do i
digress from shop talk, so I hope to be excused, this time!

[RCSE] [RCSE]Stylus Module: expected lifespan?

2002-05-16 Thread Easwen6877

I Have been having some very strange behavior with my Stylus in the last few
days.

At first I thought it was RFI, but now I am not sure. Airtronics did a
tune up of the TX weeks ago, my Batteries in planes and Tx are in top shape,
but I have lost control of two different planes after flying for about 1 1/2
minutes. One totaled, the other was not.
All of this prompts me to ask..Do Modules have a certain behavior that they
exhibit when (do they)? start going bad. Loss of radio signal by degrees?
Exactly what is the scenario of one that is starting to malfunction?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Tom,
My experience with the Kestrel 2M and the Alcyone (which uses the same type
of clips, is they are not worth a S--T!!!The planes fly great, but any
landing other than perfect will cause the fuselage formers holding the wing
bolts to fail and try to destroy the fuselage. If you are building a new
Kestrel or built-up Alcyone, forget the clips, install wing dowels a la the
Oly 2, Spirit or any other basic plane, and enjoy a lighter aircraft
requirng FAR less repairs. Just MHO.

I agree, email is the best meduim for this exchange. Mail readers (I still use

However, the two failures of the present setup: it allows attachments, which can
propagate viruses, and there is no address security. I use this account ("wilga")

I think you have it backwards. I have been flying real ones since 1950 and
have 3500 hours flying in everything from a J3 Cub to an F86 and a C130 and
I have never seen a situation where landing long gets a better grade from
my instructor or check pilot. :-) How about 100 points for landing in the
first 2 meters, 50 points for landing in the second 2 meters, and 25 points
for the last 2 meters. Increases the importance of good depth perception
too. Landing anywhere along the length of the runway is a good landing
only for helicopters and VTOL aircraft. :-)

[RCSE] (RCSE) Landings, etc., etc.......

2000-12-20 Thread Keith McLellan

I'm planning on holding a TD contest sometime next year with a precision
landing task that will be a "real" test of skill: a 1.5m wide "runway" that
is 7m long - if the nose of the model stops anywhere in the first 2m it's
25pts., in the second it's 50pts, in the 3rd it's 75pts. and in the last
meter 100pts., with a big ZERO for going past the end of the runway or for
landing "short". Now for the real "ba--buster"! The ENTIRE fuselage of the
model (includes the bottom of the trailing edge of the rudder) must rest
within the 1.5m lateral boundaries of the runway! So that means no coming
in from the side, or landing outside and spinning or sliding your nose into
the box. Won't work here. You'll have to be able to accurately fly your
plane precisely down a centerline to a controlled landing. If there is a
crosswind, well then you better know how to coordinate rudder and ailerons
properly (gee, we have to do that with power planes all the time). Too much
of a challenge? Oh, well. There's a bunch of guys in SoCal that have been
doing this for years with slope gliders of all kinds, without the benefit of
flaps or "crow", etc. and going a lot faster than most TD ships will ever
have to on landing. Now, that's just the landing task! The soaring tasks
will be just as creative! First round is a 7 min "warm up" duration with
the precision landing, with 1pt per second deducted for up to 10 sec off the
mark, and 2pt per sec for 11 up to 20 sec off, and finally, 3pt per sec for
anything over 20 sec off the mark. The second round will consist of a 12
min task and precision landing, with the same scoring. The third will be a
10 min task with precision landing, but will have the added challenge of
having a prescribed path to be flown after launch before being able to chase
thermals (and yes, that means if you fly through a thermal before you
complete that path, you just have to keep going until you reach the "release
point" at the end of that flight path). The flight path chosen will be very
easy to fly and to enforce, and relatively short. So there you have it
folks! Anyone interested in competing in such an event, email me offline.
I'd like to hold this contest someplace in SoCal this summer, but I'll
consider going to any field in the country and CDing it personally, with
support from any club willing to host it! The contest could be flown as a
two day "IronMan" event with additional tasks that I have thought of to test
the all around skills of the pilots involved. Any takers?

Re: [RCSE] (RCSE) How to Program a Stylus

2000-11-12 Thread Tom Watson

I may be missing the mark here, as I don't own a Stylus...but since you
mentioned the 'Glider' card, I wonder if you need to use it in Aircraft
(powered) mode, so the the throttle stick will know it's for the throttle
and not for spoilers/flaps/etc that are assigned to glider functions?

[RCSE] [RCSE}Canadian Nationals Soaring Report

2000-09-06 Thread jporter

Canadian Nats 2000 - Sailplane
Andersons Turf Farm, Mission, B.C.
July 28-30

It was a somewhat soggy Friday morning when Jim Porter and I met with Lynn King at
McDonalds in Mission. The forecast was good for the weekend, so that the main Nats
events were not in jeopardy. The situation was not so certain, however, for the
Friday fun fly, and scale aerotowing that we had planned. We proceeded to the farm,
leaving a trail of signs to lead other glider guiders to the field. A canopy was set
up, and much hangar flying was done waiting for the rain to let up. At lunch time the
group proceeded to a local cafe, where fish and chips and other delicacies were
enjoyed while we watched the rain get heavier and heavier. Finally, at about 1 PM,
Lynn, Steve Dentz, and the rest of the scale contingent from south of the border
decided that flying was unlikely, and returned home. The rest of us were there for
the weekend, and returned to the field and the canopy. Finally about 3 PM, the rain
stopped, and we held a belated, but enjoyable fun fly. Helmut Kihszl, Erik Eiche,
Fred China and Phil Hui flew their scale gliders, expertly towed by Bruce Zelinsky and
his clipped-wing Taylorcraft. Meanwhile, we did winch and hand-launch flying, and Guy
Russo ran a small but fun Hand Launch event. Three pilots flew alternating rounds of
Hand Launch Scramble and Guy's "Bermuda Triangle" event. The triangle event was new
to John Cavelti and Arend Borst, and both enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing this
on a larger scale at this year's NWSS tournament.

Saturday morning brought warm sunny skies, a light East wind, and 26 pilots flying 31
planes, in 2 Meter, R/E/S, and Open classes. Thermals were relatively abundant, and
after a warm-up round of 5 min ID, we flew 10ID's for the rest of the day. Landings
became slightly more challenging as the day progressed, as the wind shifted to a very
light West breeze, and the C.D. (that's me) stubbornly refused to turn the winches
around. At the end of the day, Bill Hanson, Joe Fitz-James, Guy Russo, Robin Smith
and Kirby Parker were leading in 2M, Competitor, Expert, Novice and R/E/S classes
respectively. On Saturday we also had the pleasure of talking with several members of
the general MAAC aeromodelling community who had come to participate in or observe the
Nats. Among these were MAAC Model Aviation Canada editor Keith Morison, B.C. Zone
Director Gerard McHale, and MAAC President Colin Campbell.

In lieu of the originally planned BBQ, most of the group headed to the Greek
restaurant in Mission city, for a pleasant meal and evening of conversation. Colin
Campbell presented an award to Arend Borst to recognize his success at the recent
world F3J championships in Corfu, Greece.

Sunday was also warm and sunny, but the winds were stronger and the thermals weaker.
After the wind had again shifted from E to W and picked up a bit, the C.D. (finally)
agreed to turn the winches around. Getting times was more difficult, and we ran a
combination of 5 min and 7 min tasks. Bill, Joe, Guy, Robin, and Kirby all maintained
their form and positions.

· I would like to thank the many volunteers, from near and far, that helped make this
event possible:
· Kirby and Mary Ann Parker, who did their usual impeccable job scoring the contest.
· Erwin Ledat, who ran winches for most of the weekend.
· Arend Borst, who trucked in and out most of the heavy equipment, and ran winches.
· Lynn King, who organized flyers and tow-planes for the scale event (I'm sorry you
had to leave before the rain stopped).
· Bruce Zelinsky for his expert aero-towing.
· Guy Russo, who ran the HL events.
· Waid Reynolds and Ole Skotvold, who provided winches and did much of the set-up and
tear-down work.
· And everyone who came and made this event a success.

It is either the ACLU or the thermal cops that take RCSE down now and
then.Hunting thermals is dangerous..HL. folks are hurting arms and
shoulders..TD flyers are spending "WAY" too much time in the sun and are
getting sun burned and when they break a tow line all kinds of "REAL BAD"
things can happen...We are being investigated!!! more on the weekends than
any other timeMy 2 centsBrian Smith

I recently bought a well maintained Sagitta 900. An adjustable tow hook

be of great help if anyone knows where the proper starting CG would be

[RCSE] RCSE: endplate effect for Rudder

2000-01-02 Thread Chanyiukwong

Along the path investigating yaw control induce drag and efficiency at
V-tail, I came to realize that single-sided-rudder-fin has benefit from end
plate effect that doubles the fundamental AR in the Cdi formula. The doubling
is caused by end plate effect by the horizontal stabilizer. For induce drag
coefficient, that is 50% Cdi and thus 50% absolute induce drag reduction per
unit yaw force. However, the improvement is gated by implementation quality.
For optimal effect, consider a one piece (notch-less) elevator with the
Rudder TE just ahead of the elevator-hinge. That should result optimal
"mirror" effect in favor to doubling AR without doubling the profile drag.
The above thinking also view cross shape "+" tail an inferior choice for
optimal Cdi.

Summary:
Proper arrangement of T and inv-T tails can further optimize yaw efficiency.
Square the rudder rood and position rudder-TE at elevator hinge.
"+" tail arrangement is not optimal in yaw and pitch efficiency.

[RCSE] RCSE Woes

1999-12-12 Thread RICHSHILL

I haven't gotten an RCSE since Thursday, so I know something's wrong. I
unsubscribed and re-subscribed, sucessfully, I think because the server sent
me messages acknowledging the un- and re-subscribe. I did do it for the
Digest, so maybe that's the problem and the RCSE is operating OK.

Would someone getting the digest e-mail me, please. And, if anyone has the
e-mail address of the guy at Model Airplane News who runs the RCSE, please
e-mail me.

I must be hooked, I really miss the RCSE. Plus I wanted to read the posts
about Joe Wurtz' seminar and see if any of the 40 attendees thought it was as
terrific as I did.

Re: [RCSE] [RCSE]:Is it leagle?

1999-10-25 Thread Dan deVries

Yes, your right. If I take the time and think about it a little more, I see
what is happening.

Lightly loaded large wing areas can generate enough lift at low airspeed to
climb rather quickly. With a headwind, there would be no reason to even
reel in the line and with enough "kiting" lift from winds, the line can be
un-spooled from the reel until its weight and/or drag overcome the planes
abilities.

Contemporary designs with higher loadings, stronger wings and less area and
LESS HIGH SPEED DRAG can take advantage of high line tension. The stretch
of the line stores energy that can be instantaneously transferred to the
glider, which accellerates (with its low drag) and then pulls up into a
vertical climb trading the speed for altitude. No line stretch -- no zoom
gain.

This is an educated guess, so all you readers feel welcome to critique the
above.
