Helper Applications

2013-11-22 Thread JohnW-Mpls

Win XP, SM 2.22, Browser's Helper Applications list.

I am using a fresh profile of SM and it will not let me save a pdf file I am
downloading from US News % WR (with a notice about Helper Applications).
That same file gets saved without hesitation using my old SM profile. The
old helper list shows "PDF file" as a type whereas the fresh helper shows
only "Adobe Acrobat Document" as a type. I'm guessing US News may well not
be using Adobe's product to generate their pdf file and therefor it is not
recognized by the fresh helper list.

Is there a way to: copy the list from one profile to another, edit the list,
or just add a type to the list?

Setting Helper Applications

2012-11-27 Thread Daniel

SeaMonkey Internet Suite on MandrivaLinux 2009 -

I want to set SeaMonkey to open *.xlsx files with OpenOffice. When I go
into Edit->Preferences->Browser->Helper Applications and locate "xlsx
File", it's set to "Always Ask", but I want to change it to use
OpenOffice, but when I try, I must be selecting the wrong file to use as
the Helper Applications screen continues to show "Always ask".

How do I set the correct Helper??

TIA

Forget it.

I encounter occasional links to PDF files with the application/pdf MIME
type that launch Adobe Reader and display in an Adobe Reader window.
This happens despite the fact that my Help Applications indicate to open
and display PDF files in a SeaMonkey window via the Adobe Reader plugin.
My testing indicates the problem lies at the Web site since other sites
do indeed display PDF files with the same application/pdf MIME type in
SeaMonkey windows via the plugin.

Mostly in the registry (in Windows).
Exceptions that you add yourself are stored in the file mimeTypes.rdf
in the profile directory.

you can try copying mimeTypes.rdf from your old profile.

I'm not sure what "will not let me save" means exactly. If it always
displays the pdf in the browser instead of giving you the option to
save you can click on tools / add-ons manager and disable all the
adobe plugins..

The UI for editing helper apps was removed in SeaMonkey 2.0; now you
have to edit mimetype.rdf and maybe even the registry.

See my June 2010 thread "how to automatically save files?" in the
support-seamonkey list for what I had to do to add a new helper app or
try searching for 'edit mimetype.rdf'

Set up a new profile and re-create all the helper apps exactly the way
you want them. Then overinstall mimeTypes.rdf into your regular profile.
After that you can delete the new profile, thus destroying all the
evidence. I looked at the mimeTypes file and could find no specific
reference to SeaMonkey, so maybe it will work in FF as well if you have
both installed. Lotta work for two helper apps, but whatever...

All the usual caveats about first backing up what you are about to
change apply.

I cannot find an option to delete any entry in the HELPER APPLICATION

Edit the mimeTypes.rdf file from a standard text editor. I find the lack
of the ability to remove a "Helper Application" like that in older
versions of SeaMonkey frustrating. You can check bugzilla to see if

Nope, removed one of the two in the file and when looking at the
Edit/Preferences/Browser/HelperApplications window they both still showed in
the 'Content Type' window. One had the 'Action' program and the other had

Deleted both in the mimeTypes.rdf and both still appeared with 'Always Ask' in

Created new test profile and had no trouble removing the entry for any helper

the one from the Test profile to my normal profile. My duplicate helper
problem is solved, but I'm going to leave the bug filed. There should be an
easy way to edit the helper applications. There was in SM 1.x versions. So I
guess this is a regression.

Configuring helper applications

2009-05-30 Thread John
I'm using SeaMonkey v1.1.16 and I have a couple of questions about
configuring helper applications.

1. Is it possible to play a .wmv file in the SeaMonkey window using
Windows Media Player?

2. Why do some .pdf files open Acrobat Reader in the SeaMonkey window
and others open it in a separate window? These are files coming as email
attachments from different senders.

Thanks!

Click on the xlsx file. When you get 'Open With', select 'Other'. Browse
to your soffice shell (not soffice.bin) and click. Then check the 'Do
this automatically for files...'. Now test again & the file should open

Helper Applications file types

2017-09-26 Thread EE
SeaMonkey no longer seems to take file associations from the operating
system and copy them to the Helper Applications section of Preferences.
Why is that? When I made a new profile for a new version of SeaMonkey,
I found only about half a dozen entries in that area, whereas there were
more than 50 in the old one. I had to copy mimeTypes.rdf from the old
profile and put it into the new one to get my file associations back for
SeaMonkey.
Why is there no way to add file types to Helper Applications if it has
been crippled in some manner?

The default mp4 player for W7 is WMP. So, unless you have installed a program
that will take over from the default, it's WMP.
This assumes: Windows NT 6.1; WOW64.
You might be able to find out with taskman/processes or process explorer.
You can also search for mp4 in the registry w/ regedit, but if you make
a mistake you will likely be buying a new computer.

The right column of that pane in the Preferences should tell you what
will be done with that file type, whether it is to save it, open it with

add, edit and delete entries in the helper applications list. Now in SM 2.0
Windows version, there is only a list and there seems to be no way to add or
delete entries in the list, it is possible to only edit existing help
application entries already in the list. Can someone tell me how to add entries
for certain file extensions?

Also, I found that when I opened a file type with a file extension that is NOT
in the current browser helper application list, a dialogue box pops up and asks
me what helper application to launch. If I select OPEN WITH OTHER and then
select the application from the list, the OPTION BOX for DO THIS AUTOMATICALLY
FOR FILES LIKE THIS FROM NOW ON is greyed out and I cannot check it. As a
result, I can't add this new helper application entry into the list. Does anyone
know why this is the case?

Upon further queries elsewhere, I discovered that apparently in SM 2.0, the
ability to MANUAL ADD and DELETE browser helper application entries in the list
has been removed completely, and all that a user can do now is EDIT existing
entries in the list. This seems to be crippling the flexibility that SM 1.X used
to have that allowed advanced power users to add their own definitions of helper
applications. It would have been nice if the developers kept the previous
functionality of the user being able to manually add their own MIME types and
helper applications, or delete ones that they no longer wanted. After all the
Seamonkey suite seems to be supposedly, according to some, more of a power user
application compared to other Mozilla products like Firefox.

But if the helper application list in SM 2.0 is compiled based only on the MIME
types supported per plug-ins detection, it would seem shortsighted to assume
that a helper application ENTRY in the list can exist (and thus editable under
that condition) ONLY if there is a plug-in installed that supports the MIME type
that the user needs to automatically launch a helper application with, and that
would appear to be a flawed assumption. Some helper applications exist only as
an EXE executable and outside of a plug-in form that would be compatible with
Mozilla browsers. Furthermore, the SM 1.X's helper application manual editing
capability allowed full flexibility to manually add command line parameters for
the helper application, if needed. The loss of this flexibility, if in fact true
on SM 2.0, is sorely disappointing.

Does anyone know where the existing helper application list is compiled from? It
would appear that all the entries in the SM 2.0 helper application list is based
on MIME types in detected plug-ins, as listed in the ABOUT PLUG-INS page. If
there is a configuration file and location where the helper application list is
kept for SM 2.0, I would be interested to know of it.

No "helper applications" for xls and doc files

2019-12-22 Thread Sarty, Gordon
Hello,

I have searched the web and looked through files on my computer but can
find no way to add xls and doc file types to the Preferences -> Broswer

how do you add an item to helper Applications

2011-03-10 Thread PhillipJones

I use a Mac and SeaMonkey (latest version)
on my machine I just stopped using used X.4.11 And SeaMonkey.

I was able to play wma/wmv files through a Plugin called Flip4Mac that
would allow QuickTime plugin to play WMA/WMV files. Now that I am using
a MacBook Pro (Intel Processor) It doesn't allow playing of WMV/WMA
files with browser I need to add the file type to the browsers. and set
to use QuickTime plugin.

Yes, there used to be a UI to add helper apps but it disappeared in SM 2.0 :(

> How can I add those file types?

You have to download that file type. So. from a cmd prompt, do something like

C:\Temp\t>echo "Load XLS
file" > load-xls.htm

copy or create file.xls in the same directory, open load-xls.htm with
SM and click on the link

I get a pop-up with the options to 'Open with' and 'Save File', but
the 'Do this automatically..' is greyed out :(

** is this mailing list/ newsgroup archived somewhere?
I can find my june 2010 "how to automatically save files?" q&a to the
list in my sent mail but can't find it with a search engine :(

summary: My 2010 fix, on a windows vista machine, for not being able
to select 'do this automatically...' for .pptx files was adding this
bit to the registry

 cut here ==
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pptx]
"Content
Type"="application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content
Type\application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation]
"Extension"=".pptx"

 cut here ==

It's probably the same now.. you just have to figure out the proper
"Content Type" for xls and doc files..

I have searched for a .xls on my machine using 'locate' and found one in
the source of SM-2.53. Trying to open that resulted in

http://www.triffids.de/pub/screenshot/xls191223.png

So, install LibreOffice or something equivalent. Perhaps some calc

I already have libreoffice installed, but I probably skipped the
'register libreoffice file types' or some such when I installed it..
^shrug^ no big deal. If it bothers me enough I can probably figure
out the correct file type or reinstall libreoffice and not skip the
register file types step

As I recall, you can add a new helper application by selecting a link in
a Web page to a .doc or .xls file. SeaMonkey will then popup a dialogue
requesting whether to save or open the file. You then select to open
the file. That results in another dialogue that allows you to navigate
to the desired application's executable.

Once there was a time, when you could create your own Content Type in SM
and associate it with a program of your choosing. I used that for
creating a x-hafi type. IIRC *g*

But that feature is long gone. Together with some other possibilities.

Which Quicktime plugin is your SM installation using? I've got QT 7.6.6
installed, and all mime types using that as a Helper and all is well -
Flip4Mac is translating for 7.6.6 and not QT X, I might guess.

In fact after a look - the Flip4Mac site states that "QuickTime X does
not support conversion using third-party plugins".

Try installing both versions of QT (X and 7) if you haven't done so.

I have both (the version that was on the install disc). and have all
helper set for 7.6.6 plugins. Problem there is no entry for wmv/wma. At
one time you could add items to helpers. Then for some strange reason
that ability was removed.

what happening now is I click on Open from within the email a window
openes it loads about halfway and stops. I can save to desktop and click
on and QuickTime opens and plays. I have enough RAM 8 GB and Computer is
fast enough 2.8 Ghz i7 It also has the dual video built in and Nvida
video card.

Well downloaded and reinstalled Flip4Mac This time I clicked reload
and box came up then gave me a Choice of saving File or or playing with
the WMV Player (part of Flip4Mac.

I chose the WMV Player and QuickTime10 would come up. Not QuickTime 7.

But still I have to ht reload each time in order for it to start
QuickTime. Better than before. I guess acceptable. Evidently the
QuickTime 7 plugin doesn't work. with x.6.6.

Phillip I'm using OS 6.6, on a Macbook Pro and iMac, have both QT x and 7.66 installed and have the
latest version

In 'about plugins' there is *no* option for enabling wmv but there is a separate Flip4Mac Windows
Media plugin.

The only preferences I have enabled are the ones mentioned above, i.e
Browser:
*Use Flip4Mac
*Maintain aspect ratio

Player:
*Open AVI files

As an after thought you may have to restart after you make any changes.

Good luck, if it were me I'd start over again and the only preferences I would *touch* are the ones
mentioned above.

Interesting question. I'll note that some of the Appearance entries
don't explicitly have anything to do with appearance per se, e.g.,
smooth scrolling setting. It would probably be useful to cull out all
the stuff that is common and create a new group, e.g., Common. As for
helper apps being in Advanced not really an advanced setting, but
it'll do in a pinch.

I don't think it should be hidden under Advanced. Either give it its
own category or leave it where it is. It has been under browser for
years and people know where to find it. I understand that technically
it applies to mail and news and not just browser, but how many people
have complained that they couldn't find it (any?)? And how many will
complain when it is moved and they can't find it and think it has been
removed?

One of the things you hear the most complaints about is developers
"wasting" their time on UI changes that don't need done instead of
fixing real problems.

No matter where you put it (other than giving it its own category)
some/many people won't like it. On the other hand if you just leave
it where it is I doubt anyone would complain.

This is very true. Change merely for the sake of change leads to user
