[OSM-legal-talk] Shipping OSM data with a commercial application
Hi I put this question up on the forum but they suggested I place it on the list here. We develop commercial applications primarily using MapGuide Open source. The applications are mainly installed and used in house at our clients sites. I would like to supply the OSM data of the UK , converted to MapGuide Opensource SDF format, to our clients for use in the application. The application is a information tool, they will store commercial information on various projects across the country. Does the OSM allow me to convert and supply the data this way? I would be more than happy to make the converted MapGuide data available for pubic access. I think I should be able to pass the data on to my clients. But as soon as my clients use it for work and overly their data on it, will they have make their data available to the public?. If they did, then I can't use OSM, my clients data is commercial sensitive and they will not be able to make it publicly available. Thanks Gary ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/legal-talk

I would be more than happy to make the converted MapGuide data available for pubic access. You must make sure that your converted data is licensed under CC-BY- SA 2.0, and you must give proper OSM attribution. I think I should be able to pass the data on to my clients. But as soon as my clients use it for work and overly their data on it, will they have make their data available to the public? No, as long as the data remains with your clients they can do what they want. Only if they create something based on OSM data and PUBLISH it, then the product must be licensed CC-BY-SA. It is flexible as well, the same system works as well with select * from osm_line where highway='prmary'. around error locations and made corrections. Usually this works rather well. But then I faced such a ring self-intersection that I cannot correct it. It is about a lake that intersects itself but also shares one node with a road. The place is here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/index.html?mlat=61.277669238738454mlon=28.855010608222813zoom=13 I was thinking that I should cut the lake polygon, draw a couple of new nodes and connect the lake together again, but I just cannot split the lake boundary. How should I do it? What I would do is: Use the shift-delete to remove 2 of the 4 segements from the common node. Then create another node some small distance away. Then add the segments back again going via the new node. I got it corrected by doing some shift-deleting and redrawing. Thanks to Jörg who helped by separating the highway for me. Alternatively you could split the way into 2: select the way the node with the 4 segments, then tools-Split Way. I'm not certain whether this will end up with 2 closed ways but I think it should. I have not succeeded at all in splitting closed ways with JOSM. It always says to me that I should select a node from the middle of the road. It seems to think that any node in the closed ring is the starting one. After this week's planet dump is imported (probably today), the hourly diffs should be able to properly keep it up to date as the wiki page states. Since a passing place is a very short length normally it would be simpler to tag a node with lanes=2 at each passing place. Isn't that the simplest method and easily understandable in the data? That seems a lot more logical than what is done now. lanes is the physical number of lanes on a road/carriageway. What would be nice would be the ability to also indicate the direction and also whether it's a lane for making a turn left or right or going straight ahead. It should of course be possible to have more than one lane for turning/going straight as well. It's not at all easy to tag usage restrictions on ways or even nodes by themselves and was one of the reasons that relations was set up. I don't believe we have yet come up with a simple way of defining turn restrictions, we had lots of discussion about it and there is a perfectly good way of doing it with relations, but none of it is easy for the less experienced mapper, yet routing information is still one of the most talked about aspects of the project and the one that will hopefully eventually put OSM on the same playing field (in terms of capability) with the main opposition. Personally though I think its time will come. SteveC and I were discussing this week what we do when we are mapped out, ie when it is no longer economically viable (time mainly) to map anything in our local area because its all been done. That's fast approaching for those of us who have been mapping a fair while now. The next logical step is to rethink the need and refocus on making the areas already mapped better, and that will include all the turn restriction data. For now though I think our focus is quite rightly getting a more complete coverage of basic data, although I'll warmly support anyone who is grabbing their own area by the scruff of the neck and getting better routing data into it. I guess a new user by definition is one who signs up at http://www.openstreetmap.org/create-account.html (as distinct from the wiki). 1) Further encourage folks to to sign up by putting a link in the main page OpenStreetMap is a free editable map ... box that non-logged in users see. Yes, there is a sign up link, but it does not explain why or encourage! 2) Expand the sign up page: - pre-checked main and/or new newbie mailing list tick boxes (but easy and obvious to opt out) - drop-down country and state/city box as Andy suggests. 3) A welcome email with some of the key starter links on the wiki and an invitation to the country-specific mailing list of country selected and said mailing list exists (hmm, can that be confirmed programmatically?). 4) Needs thinking through, but some sort of easy path to also signing up for a wiki account and using the neat Your home feature on the User details settings page. I remember I found it a little confusing that I had to sign-up twice. Mike ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] How do we tag passing/slow lanes?
Hi, I'm a new comer working in/on Southern Alberta. Just getting to grips with the range of tags available, and have a question about passing/slow lanes. By passing lane, I mean a section of non-segregated road which has an additional lane in one direction. This is often on an up-hill section where larger traffic would slow, however this is not always the case. Here they have built a series of passing lanes on Highway 3 (Crowsnest Pass to Lethbridge) instead of building segregated lanes. The same situation can occur where you have turn left/right turn lanes at junctions, which is very common here. The only suggestion I had was to set lanes to '1+2', which would mean 1 lane in the forward direction (of the way) and 2 in the reverse direction. If by convention the user was to use the 'normal' width as the first parameter then renderers which did not support this extra feature would be able to easy parse out the data. This obviously means sections of road might have the opposite way direction, but I don't think that matters. It would also require some fine tuning of which lane merged back into the normal flow, ie. did the 1st or 2nd lane have to merge? Comments? Cheers, Mungewell. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

To annotate the physical: Break the way at the start and end of each passing section and tag with lanes=2 for the normal sections (assuming its normally a two lane undivided highway) and lanes=3 where the way includes the passing lane. This doesn't deal with solid white line restrictions that might be present along sections of the way, but then we don't really attempt to get to that level of detail for normal roads at the moment anyway. The only suggestion I had was to set lanes to '1+2', which would mean 1 lane in the forward direction (of the way) and 2 in the reverse direction. This obviously means sections of road might have the opposite way direction, but I don't think that matters. generally speaking the majority of maps don't try to be too clever and show streets at the real width as it physically varies. Trying to get too smart with rendering will probably lead to more errors through missing or inconsistent data anyway so it's probably not going to be worth it. If they did, then I can't use OSM, my clients data is commercial sensitive and they will not be able to make it publicly available. As I understand it, you're fine. Firstly, there's no obligation to publish. The licence says that the data may be distributed only under its terms. If they're _not_ actually distributing it (i.e. they're keeping it internally), the share-alike licence terms don't kick in. Secondly, if they're only overlaying the data, this is potentially a Collective Work (share-alike doesn't apply) rather than a Derivative Work (where it does). It should be noted, however, that our current licence is not (IMO) sufficiently clear about whether internal company use of a derivative work would constitute distribution. We are considering moving to a different licence which makes this, and much else, more explicit. cheers Richard ___ legal-talk mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/legal-talk

Cheers Andy As I'm new to this game, but very impressed by the bredth and depth of the documentation for OSM, I'm quite surprised that lanes isn't better described. I assumed it was the number of lanes in each direction, and started tagging normal residential roads as lanes=1, then I found two spots where there's onyl room for traffic in one direction at a time (over a narrow bridge and through an ancient arch or folly). I was stumped how to tag these, but when I saw someone say lanes was the total number of lanes on that way (so in both directions for a non one way way) thought this was great. Would it be too forward to suggest a Proposed features/lanes page. My proposal would be that lanes is the total number of lanes on the way, so ; Two Way residential road with one lane in either direction: lanes=2 One way road: lanes=1 individual carriageway for three lane motorway: lanes=3 With a rationale that this would then clear up confusion, and help with recording information such as single lane width restrictions, passing places etc. I then assume that some of the highway tags could then assume a lanes value (residential, unclassified, tertiary: lanes=2) I'll happily edit the page, but don't want to step on decorum ! Hi, What do we do with ways that get excessively long if we combine the polygon border? (some really big forests and lakes come to mind) I don't know -- create a new relation type specifically for this? As far as I can tell, the fact that putting multiple border ways in a multipolygon relation may have worked is due to the implementation of multipolygons in the renderers. But this isn't what the relation is meant to do.

___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk-fr
