[talk-ph] OSMing at Quiapo Church
Dear everyone, I mentioned early this month of a small project we are collaborating for disaster management [0]. The initiative is more towards disaster mitigation and not on the actual disaster (which we hope won't happen). We will be using OSM as a primary source of data. The institution we are working with is the Saint John the Baptist Parish (aka Quiapo Church) We will be having our initial mapping workshop on September 6, 2012 at the Quiapo Church, Manila. The plan is to orient local church leaders on the project and do some bits of mapping around the parish [1]. I invite everyone to join in the first of the series of mapping events. If you are interested send me a message. My guess would be that this is where a future connection to another network will/might occur. Does it always occur on the edge of a network? It would be helpful if an indication of the distance and maybe why to go for the longer route would be given. [OSM-talk-be] Names of Arrondissements
I would like to discuss the naming of the arrondissements in Belgium. Currently, the ones I added (in West-Flanders) are the only ones with a name like Arrondissement Roeselare, a big part of the others don't exist yet, but they have a name like Antwerpen. I'm all in favour of uniform names, but I want to clarify my choice for including Arrondissement in the name. 1. When people refer to Antwerpen, they might mean the province or the city, but never the arrondissement. If they mean the arrondissement, that's always mentioned. And I believe that the name tag should reflect what people use to refer to the object. 2. This is also in the choice of the names of Wikipedia articles: They name the articles Antwerpen (stad)https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antwerpen_%28stad%29and Antwerpen (provincie) https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antwerpen_%28provincie%29, so the appended (stad) or (provincie) is just a clarification. But the article of the arrondissement gets the name Arrondissement Antwerpenhttps://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrondissement_Antwerpenwhich means it's part of the name. 3. We can't expect non-OSM members to learn the mapping of the different admin_levels. So if someone searches the Kerkstraat in Brugge, and they return with a result of the Kerkstraat in Heist inside Brugge, they could wrongly think that they have the right street. While if the result would show the Kerkstraat is in Heist, arrondissement Brugge, the user might know it's wrong. 4. Some people want to index the streets per city (to have a quicker search). Because other countries use different admin_levels for their city boundaries, the only current way is searching the city node and the boundary that goes with it by the name tag. By using the city name for the arrondissements, these tools could get confused. (this last part is mainly the fault of Germany, where different admin_levels are used for different importance of cities). This also makes that Nominatim can't automatically add Arrondissement to make the search result of #3 more clear. Off coarse, setting the name to Arrondissement Antwerpen also makes the life of the mapper a bit easier (it's easier to browse through the different boundary relations), but this is of lesser importance than having the right data. I have also made a little vote on the wiki: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:WikiProject_Belgium/Boundaries#Arrondissement_names If you don't like discussions, or your opinion is fixed, you can cast your vote. ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be
Re: [OSM-talk-be] Designation=*
2012/8/29 Ben Laenen benlae...@gmail.com Hi everyone, I'd like to use the current activity on the mailing list to solve a few tagging issues... First up: the F99a/F99b/F99c traffic signs (i.e. these signs http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Eimai/Belgian_Roads#Roads_and_paths_signed_with_traffic_sign_F99a.2FF99b.2FF99c ) We need an extra tag that says these roads have that specific traffic sign to determine the exact access rules. I currently just use traffic_sign=*, but that may be a problem if there are more traffic signs at once. Hence I'd like to look at the designation=* tag (see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:designation ). But the problem is that the name our government gave to these roads is basically unusable for a tag. We can just translate it and make something like designation=road_reserved_for_agricultural_vehicles_pedestrians_cyclists_and_horse_riders but yeah, I guess you see the problem with a tag like that... But I have no better idea... Don't all roads with access rules have specific signs to clarify the rules. I would think that the combination access=destination bicycle=yes foot=yes horse=yes agricultural=yes would be enough. If you really want to denote it's because one of those specific signs, maybe adding a designation=reserved would be good. Together with the access tags, it can be determined for who it is reserved. Second problem, and somewhat the same: the nature reserves (this message concerns about Flanders only, I don't know the regulations about this in Wallonia, but we have to keep in mind that there are different rules about this over there, and in Brussels of course). The paths and roads in nature reserves are signed with these kind of signs: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Eimai/Flemish_Nature_Reserves Now, we need some way to tag that these roads belong to a nature reserve, again to correctly know the access rules on these roads from the tags. This is also an excellent candidate to use the designation=* tag. I'm personally thinking about designation=flemish_nature_reserve (the tag has to include somehow that it belongs to Flanders, but maybe it's not necessary if you think boundaries are enough to determine this, so we can just use designation=nature_reserve). designation=nature_reserve would comply with the designation=reserved tag, and it can also be completed with the access tags. I don't think Flemish is needed. Let your voices be heard Ben ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

I remember highway=unclassified to be very unclear to me, but since we use it, it became more clear. designation=reserved means a F99* plate. The other access values tell you what is on it. An other option would be to introduce the value designated in Belgium, like most other countries have. So a F99a would translate to access=destination horse=designated foot=designated bicycle=designated designation=reserved and a C3 with exception for local traffic translates to access=destination horse=yes foot=yes bicycle=yes And a nature reserve plate would translate to access=private foot=designated towing_dogs=designated designation=nature_reserve That way, when we have some xxx=designated, we know a designation=* tag is missing. It looks quite complete and clear to me. I wouldn't like to include all values inside the designation=* tag like you did with designation=road_reserved_ for_agricultural_vehicles_pedestrians_cyclists_and_horse_riders, as there is a huge possibility to make mistakes, and the order of words isn't even defined. ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

An other option would be to introduce the value designated in Belgium, like most other countries have. So a F99a would translate to access=destination horse=designated foot=designated bicycle=designated designation=reserved Maybe, but would it really make a difference compared to just using yes? and a C3 with exception for local traffic translates to access=destination horse=yes foot=yes bicycle=yes No extra tags please, C3 with destination traffic is just access=destination, no other tags (mappers won't put them all in anyway). If they change the traffic code tomorrow so it allows all mopeds as well, we'd have to go after each road and check its tags again. The optimal method of tagging is still one sign (or one bit of information on the sign) = one tag. And a nature reserve plate would translate to access=private foot=designated towing_dogs=designated designation=nature_reserve These access tags aren't really correct though, it varies on the signs that are present. And I'm only talking about the nature reserves which have the signs from over here http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Eimai/Flemish_Nature_Reserves So the designation=nature_reserve will mean that it's signed using those signs. That way, when we have some xxx=designated, we know a designation=* tag is missing. Its name is actually defined pretty well in our traffic code, there's one name for F99a/F99b and one for F99c, and it has that same list of vehicles, whatever the icons on the traffic sign are. So a F99a with just pedestrians is still a road reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders even though the last two aren't allowed (ah, the fun you can have with traffic code :-) ) But yeah, we need something much simpler since the full name is way too error prone. But I'm not too sure about just designation=reserved because it's not really clear what it means exactly. But I have no alternatives, so it's the winning proposal for now :-) Ben ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be
Re: [OSM-talk-be] Names of Arrondissements
Anyway, there's only one way to solve this: find out what the official names that are written in the law are, and use those. But I have no idea where to find this (if it's in a law of course, I'm even not sure about that, but there has to be an official document somewhere that defines them). I'm with you on this point. Note that the wiki mentions almost exactly this issue, but using City rather than Arrondissement. Het spijt me zeer. The Toronto Open Data pilot saved the city a half a million dollars in the first year. iirc, the quote from the Toronto CTO. The right license is a more complex issue to discuss. In part, because the concepts are new to most people. In part because this area of law appears to be both new and rapidly evolving. This summary will be shot to ribbons, no doubt. In general, Public Domain can't be assigned. Instead Copyright has to expire, then a work enters the public domain. One noteworthy exception to this is the US Federal (not State or local) government publications (not all of them) that fall in the Works of the US Government[1]. This exemption does not extend to you and me being able to say, my document is public domain. Any government body other than the US Federal government is unable to take advantage of the Works of the US Government PD-loophole. So Open Data publishers need to select a license with which to license their rights to the data. When I speak to government bodies and other potential Open Data publishers, I recommend the Open Data Commons, Public Domain Dedication and License, ODC-PDDL[2]. I do so because it is drafted and maintained by experts in the evolving field of international open data law. It is drafted and maintained in consultation with Open Data communities. It is drafted with portability and inter-operation in mind. This is a massive coordinated mapping project itself. If done, it would be an awesome database which even the government may not have. It is. In fact, Arky and I started http://www.heritagewalks.in/ as part of the Maps for Making Change workshop and tried to come up with a platform for people to quickly check in locations of heritage importance. The project didn't take-off as expected and is in a bad shape. Any crowdsourced project of this sort will eventually face this chicken and egg problem, and that's one of my learnings from the heritagwalks.in project. The workflow that Onkar suggested seems sensible to me, but it boils down to the availability of data and how we can go about it. Cheers, Sajjad. 2. Re: [Talk-it] Mappare un canale coperto
Sarebbe da parlarne in [tagging]. ciao, Martin ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

[Talk-it] route attraverso piazza (o area)
