Multiple Standard replies - pick list

2002-04-05 Thread Jon Lawrance

When I get an email, quite often I need to choose a reply from a
possible list of 5 canned answers.

I understand there are keyboard shortcuts where I can type a keyword
and hit Alt+space or something like that. But when I have lots of
different replies for each folder, it gets near impossible to remember
what they are.

Is there a way to do this perhaps using another application or is this
a high priority feature that The Bat team should look at?

The functionality I am looking for is similar to that found for
Outlook at the following url:

http://www.emailtemplates.com/et/

Any suggestions?

You are referring to quick templates. You don't have to use keywords
and shortcuts, you can as well choose them from the menu which i guess
is what you want.

Edit some quick templates (Options-Quick Templates...) and then use
them by, while in the editor, choosing the corresponding template from

Hello Marcus,

Thanks - that is what I want, but perhaps slower than ideal!

It would be great if this menu was available:

1. On right clicking the mouse.

2. The choices filtered by the folder the originating message was in.

3. Not having to click Reply first.

Since I respond to such large quantities of email, a faster way of
doing this would be much better for me.

Parking a message guards that message against accidental deletion of

I know. I'm talking about parking a _task_, i.e. parking
fetching mail or parking sending mail.

You can park a task, so you can read the log after the task has finished
its work (useful when the CC is set to show automatically).

But that's why we have a log to begin with. I still don't
see what the use of parking a task has.

This could involve adding a blank line to separate the paragraphs,
formatting the main part of the cookie to wrap the text using alt-l

This sounds complicated. I see many multi-line cookies followed
directly by an attribution line on TBUD. Is this how they are done?

You *can* always use the %WRAPPED macro. But any newline inserted
manually into your cookie lines will be removed by this macro. Cookies
are always single lines, you can either format them manually (that's
what I did) or let TB rewrap it, losing any manual formatting.

Let's see if a small example can clarify this. I put one of my cookie

Hi tracer,

yes, I believe that is embarrassing. But I don't believe that The Bat!
is to blame. Question: why did you import your sent messages to the
outbox and not to their respective folders? Besides, TB! won't send
anything automatically unless you tell it to do so in your options...

I even let TB! ask my confirmation for immediate sending, so if I
inadvertently hit the send button instead of put in outbox or save
as draft, no unwanted sending will occur.

 Any suggestions?

Take a look at 'Classic Clipboard'

The full version ($25) handles about 90,000 clips with 26 'Hot Clips'.
There is a free version that will give you about 3200 clips.

My top five list has only two entries:

1) The Bat! (absolutely the best!)

I do own both, and while Becky has some very nice features, it's no
TB! Becky, for me, is sort of a backup for both email and news (it has
a basic news plug-in). Sometimes, I'll send an email from Becky just

TB! has a wonderful and useful feature set (better than any I've

the moment*:

1) The Bat! 1.6c:
Does more than most people would ever need in a MUA.

2) Sylpheed
IMO the best graphical mailer for Unix-based systems (no, I don't
consider mutt or pine to have graphical interfaces).

3) Mozilla
Promising. It seems it could become my recommendation for a free
 MUA (on Windows) one day.

4) mutt
I use it at my university. Nice to have for checking mail via SSH.
Nice list of features, highly configurable (although I must admit
that I only use a very small subset of its features).

5) Outlook
Good PIM solution. Evolution 1.03 comes close, but Outlook
nevertheless is a good piece of software. Unfortunately,
it is a popular target for virii because it is really widespread.

Sometimes, in my weaker moments, I wish there was a version of Sylpheed
for Windows (I know there is one, but I don't really like it).
Especially over the last few weeks, when a lot of new functions have
been added to TB while old bugs were still present.

Yes,

- Create a quick template and mark it for mass mailing
- select the addresses in your address book and select the menu option File
MassMailing using template

It is as easy as that (although I must admit that the first step is easy to
overlook)

Here's what I would do: have a list of the quick templates on paper
to quickly find the handle, type it in and hit ctrl + space. After
all, your fingers are already on the keyboard when you edit a
 message...

How about keeping a quick template that is a DOUBLE-SPACED list of
your 30 quick templates. That way you'll only have to remember one
handle, instead of 30. (It might be useful to make an extra entry at
the end of the list, that will be easy to find later, perhaps a string
of = signs.) Then, when you want to include a listed template in a
message:

1. Type the list's handle, hit Ctrl+Space.

2. Find the handle of the template you really need and copy it.

3. Put the cursor at the end of the extra entry (remember the string
of = signs), and hit Enter twice.

4. Paste the handle you copied, hit Ctrl+Space.

5. Highlight and delete the list, and the extra space below the end of
the list.

Just a thought.

Hi Ian,

 1. Virtual Access is still undoubtedly the best all round mail news
( CIS) client I've ever used. Sadly no-longer developed although
 still fully functional.

Although I abandoned VA after 6 years and moved to TB!, I basically
agree with you. And you know the reasons why I made the change.
However, I don't think e-mail clients, like many other things, can be
judged objectively. The best client for a person depends on his needs
and preferences.

 2. The Bat! comes a not so close second. (Hi Miguel - Still not
convinced!) Let down by the dreadful interface and even worse
 documentation. Looking foward to v.2

See what I mean? VA has been the best for me for 6 years and now is
TB!. And specially now that I can also manage newsgroups with TB!

Well, you have found out by yourself that, for mail lists, you don't
need an outgoing filter (or if you use it you can send messages
directly to trash) because you will get your own message back from the

Is this what you are looking for:

While using of BCC fields creates a single message sent to multiple
people, Mass Mailing can create personalised messages so the
recipient can see his/her name and address in the TO field and the
message text can contain the recipient-specific information like
his/her title, greeting accordingly to the gender defined in your
address book, company name, etc. To use Mass Mailing feature, you
should create a Quick template and set the option to use it for new
messages/Mass mailing. Then, select addresses from your address book
and use the File|Mass mailing using template menu command of the
 address book window...

It's (you may or not may not believe it) actually an excerpt of the

Re: Multiple Standard replies - pick list

2002-04-05 Thread Rick Reumann

Not trying to beat a dead horse with suggestions, but as someone else
mentioned you might want to consider a decent macro program. It will
help in so many ways outside of The Bat!. The neat thing is with my
personal favorite- PerfectKeyboard- you can organize all kinds of
lists to pop up containing your macros from just a right click of the
icon in the sys tray (or of course a keyboard shortcut:). So for
example, in this case you just create your e-mail replies, name them,
and then assign them to a group (maybe e-mail replies), then with
just a right click of the icon you can select e-mail replies and a
pop up box of your selection will appear and you just double click on
the one you want and the text is put in the e-mail. Piece of cake.
(And of course each reply could also be assigned a keyboard shortcut
so if you ever got bold and wanted to remember a few you could always
use the shortcut, vs. using the popup list). Link to perfect keyboard
is:

New PGP Plugin for The Bat !

2002-04-05 Thread Nick Andriash

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

As first reported on PGP-Basics, I would like to take this opportunity to
announce a new PGP Plugin for The Bat. Imad R. Faiad has been in touch
with RITLabs and has come up with a PGP Plugin that ties nicely into PGP
6.5.8ckt Build 07. I had tested earlier versions of the Plugins that had
problems, but Imad was very quick to come up with an update to resolve the
problems I found.

The current Plugin works very nicely, and Imad has promised to write me
tomorrow regarding the possible removal of PGPLog as a means of signature
verification, preferring instead to show the following:

*** PGP Signature Status: good
*** Hash: MD5
*** Signer: Imad R. Faiad [EMAIL PROTECTED]
*** Signer Key ID: 0x833F1BAD
*** Signer Key Fingerprint: 75CD 96A7 8ABB F87E 9390 5FD7 2A88 4F45
*** Signed: 05/04/02 11:36:09 AM
*** Verified: 05/04/02 2:11:19 PM
*** BEGIN PGP VERIFIED MESSAGE ***

Another very nice feature of the Plugin is that the User is no longer
having to accept a hard coded and incorrect version line (PGP 6.5i), and
in fact can customize the version line as needed via PGP's Options. Access
to the Key Manager and Preferences File through TB's Toolbar is of course
available.

You can download the necessary files and instructions for installing the
Plugin here:

http://www.ipgpp.com/bins082.zip

http://www.ipgpp.com/batpgp65.zip

Be advised that this Plugin is still basically in Beta, so decide
accordingly when installing. For those that want to try the Plugin, I
would appreciate any comments/suggestions/bugs be reported to me ASAP so I
may pass it on to Imad tomorrow. Actually, any comments can remain on
TBUDL/TBBETA and I will simply copy and present them to Imad tomorrow.

Thanks to Stefan, Maxim and the others at RITLabs... and good luck...

New address

2002-04-05 Thread Wayne Black

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Friday, April 05, 2002 7:53 PM GMT -0800 (PST)

Greetings TheBat! Users,

I have a new email address and I hope I made the switch correctly. I
joined the list with my new address and unsubscribed with my old one.
I also had a question. When sending messages now with my new account I
am getting this message in the log: WARNING: there were no compatible
authentication mechanisms detected This has only started since I
upgraded to 1.60 The messages get sent and everything works fine, but
is this anything to be concerned about?

And I see there is more information in the log now such as processed
by Bat Mailing List, moved to Batlist for each message sent. All
in all, no problems with 1.60 out side of when trying to click and
drag messages to a folder, I lose them and they wind up in other
folders. So I just right click and choose Move to folder and it
works fine. I have almost 18,000 messages from this list now since Jan
2001 (which is small compared to many of you) and could never go back
to using another email program. I tried the rest and have the best.
Thanks to all for helping me learn all about TheBat over the last 15
months.

Hello Jan,

JR Just curious - on what basis would you think this w/o

I don't mean to defend VA or TB!, but maybe you don't want to put the
recipients into your address book for starters. Now I may have you
thinking this is is a spam junkie. Wrong again!

For example how about you are contacting people professionally over
the phone who provide you their e-mail address. They agree to receive an
e-mail from you with regard to your telephone conversation. During
the day you input all the contact information necessary into a
database. At the end of the day you run a query for all those
agreed to the e-mail and save it to a CSV file. You merge the CSV file
with a standard e-mail regarding your professional telephone conversation.

Whalla you have an individual e-mail for every individual you spoke to
that day. At this point in time I do NOT want them in my address book.
The purpose of the e-mail was to provide contact information and resources
available to them on the net with regard to following up your telephone
conversation. The recipient can now decide according to their schedule
when to look at the resources and contact you. If they are NOT interested
I do NOT want them in my address book. Just more work like maintenance on
the address book!

JL Any suggestions?

Daniel had the idea in [1]. I found a much simpler way to get a quick
menu for quick templates:

Here is the quick template you should use for mails you have to
reply to in different ways using some canned answers:
__
%CLEAR

mail from: %OFromName %OFromAddr
   to: %oToName %OToAddr
  subject: %osubj

Standard reply template t_handle_s%cursor
canned answer 1 description t_handle_1
canned answer 2 description handle_2
canned answer 3 description handle_3
canned answer 4 descriptiont_hdl_4
canned answer 5 description templ_handle_5
canned answer 6 description handle_06
canned answer 7 description t_handle_7
......
¯¯

Every time you reply to a message you'll see information about sender,
receiver, subject and describtions and handles (= names) of all
relevant templates you might want to use.

Look at the %cursor macro. Assumed you created quick templates for all
your canned answers you just have to move your cursor down to the
wanted handle and finally press Ctrl+Space. This is really quick! (The
handles must be aligned on right of course)

This is even a better solution than selecting templates directly from
the menu (Utilities - Insert quick template) because a) you can list
only the templates you want and b) you can order, arrange etc. them as
you like (with separators...).

A canned answer template could look line this (%CLEAR is important!):
__
%CLEAR%-Hello %AbOFromFirstName=%OFromFirstName,

* you wrote:

%QUOTES

No problem, [...]

--
Regards, Jon
¯¯

Maybe one could use such a quick menu as a folder template for some
mailing lists (those without reply-to: and with the need for setting a
to: in folder templates) and let the user choose between reply to
list, reply to author etc.?
