Hello Chris,

Problem is, even if you delete the mail, it still get's filtered to it's
 respective folder.

Is there anyway that if you hit delete, it bins it rather than ignoring
me and filtering it to it's folder anyway?

H. That's strange. I use a good number of read filters and I have
never seen that problem. Do you mark your messages as read manually?

Not without manually including the message ID of the root message in

Don't delete it, but flag it and set as option for your filter that
it's only triggered by unfiltered messages.

Create another read filter that deletes flagged messages.

No need for a second filter.

Simply tell the 'Read message' filter to filter only message 'not
flagged' and you're done.

If you want to delete a message set the flag (e.g. by using Ctrl+G)
and _than_ delete it. The 'Read messages' filter won't be applied as the
message is flagged and the normal 'Delete' operation is done.

For one thing, I'm archiving all lists I'm a member of and not all
lists run a public accessible archive.
A second reason is access time. Running a search on my local harddisk
with TB is a lot faster than via the net. Nowadays I'm on ADSL and
that's a reasonable connection, but before this summer I had a cable
ISP that was very slow.
As a third reason I like the way TB finds messages even in other
accounts if necessary. And the habit of certain list members to post
message-id's helps only for locally stored messages.

Of course you can configure any port from your end to send, but the
standard SMTP port is 25, used throughout the Internet, and they (AOL)
will not allow any relaying on their port 25 / SMTP servers. Most ISPs
will not allow relaying altogether, as this is spam haven. Mercury would
work best if you had your own domain, and running your own mail server.
Otherwise, I don't see any practical use for it, as TB! provides all the
transport (SMTP POP3) info for any account that you have existing.

s But AOL say's it will not relay messages or allow use of any

Yes, a wonderful one that I have used is www.myrealbox.com You can use
SMTP or IMAP, and can SMTP or POP3 from TB! or their web mail interface
directly. Cost is free, no hassle setup, and works well. BTW, this works
with SSL, MD5 encryption too. Since it is web based, you can log on from
any ISP, and POP or send your mail using this account and TB!

I would suggest going with another *big* ISP, so that when you are
traveling, you can have local access numbers provided. The big ones also
provide a 800 number access that you can use, for those times you are not
in a provided area, (in the boonies), so that you can get on line.
Earthlink comes to mind.

I (and helpers) did a Whois search and came up with IP addresses of

Incidentally, what and exactly how does one do a Whois search - I sort
of muddled through Google and went to a site where I entered AOL.com,
but is this really the way?

I feel like I've taken a IT course since yesterday - finally figuring

A Definitely. This is why I use my own SMTP server. I never have to
A worry about an ISP SMTP server accepting my mail. A direct mail
A delivery is done so once MDaemon here delivers mail successfully, I
A know that the recipients mail server has received the mail.

Boy, I know that. I have a better uptime track record than my ISP. Cool

my own domains, mail servers, web servers, and DNS servers.

G I will check Mercury out, as I have questions regarding DNS

I can just point it to my own DNS servers. This is slick. I just saw it

Hi slug,

On Wednesday, October 16, 2002, 12:08 PM, you mentioned about ATT Broadband

s Att works for me with Mercury, but AOL will not.

Does not surprise me at all. AOL does not do anything standard. g

s I got the IP address of the nameserver on my PC with ATT by
s using IPConfig/ALL in the command prompt window (Win 2000) - they may
s change over time so I may have to re-enter. But you are right, not
s very usefull for me -maybe I'll think of some reason this method
s of mail delivery would be preferable later.

Well, if you are on the road a lot, try www.myrealbox.com Just open up an
account, add the SMPT and POP3 stuff into the bat, and you are off and
running. You can use this with any ISP you log onto and send mail and
receive mail from TB! .. Bingo, you have a nice mail account.

s But with AOL on my portable computer for traveling with Win 98 (ugh).
s I (and helpers) did a Whois search and came up with IP addresses of
s the nameservers but still got a message back from the server of We do
s not relay non-local mail - sorry

It will never work with AOL.

s Incidentally, what and exactly how does one do a Whois search - I sort
s of muddled through Google and went to a site where I entered AOL.com,
s but is this really the way?

You can use www.betterwhois.com to search all domain registers.

In Linux, I just use the command line and do a dig or host, or whois
command.. I can actually use their DNS servers directly to get this

it worked okay, except some features, i.e. spellcheck did not work. TB!
actually worked better in the earlier versions with this. Recently, it
has crashed under WINE, and I have not had the time to go into the WINE
server to fix the problem.. Frankly, I do not trust it for heavy duty,
important mail use yet. I do use TB! in VMWare using Windows, within
Linux. I just set the IP address for SMTP and POP to my LAN mail server..
and go from there. All TB! files/directories are utilized not in Windows
under VMWare, but right in Linux. (This saves VMWare disk space.) Since I
use Dispatch Mail from Server, mail is very easy to manage from what ever
I am in at the moment g

I have been an avid proponent for TB! coming out a Linux version, and from
what I have been told, it probably will come to pass. That would solve
all my needs, and certainly open up a tremendous market for TB! g

Problem sharing a mailbox

2002-10-16 Thread David Cantatore

Hi all,

Here's the situation: I have a group of 4 people (a small company) who
share a common address with the same username. I can't create aliases
on the server, and the solution of forwarding all the mails from the
main account to their personal ones isn't a possibility. TB! is
configured to leave the messages on the server for 2 weeks so they all
get the same e-mails, regardless of what each person does in its own
inbox.

It'd been working well for a couple of months, but now the problem is
TB sees the old messages on the server as new and downloads them, even
though they're already in TB's inbox on each workstation. If they use
the kill dupes function, the messages are downloaded again!

What should I configure to stop this behaviour? Given the volume of
e-mails these ppl get, it's become a major problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you still have TheBat! installed, click on Specials | Mailing List

If you don't have it handy anymore, send an email to

You should get a confirmation request that you'll have to reply to in
order to get off properly.

BTW, I'm switching FROM Outlook XP. I've used Outlook for several
years now, (after switching to it from Netscape Mail), and find that
TB! is an improvement, if only because it conforms to Internet
standards a lot more.

There's been several messages discussing how to install alternative
icons or even making your own.

Re: ATT Broadband connections problems

2002-10-16 Thread slug

Hello slug,

I thought I'd add one more message to this thread - my solution to
the problem of sending e-mail through my AOL account while traveling,
and using The Bat! to access and organize all my email.

No luck with sending anything through AOL - not even with Mercury -
they somehow prevent nameserver use as well as relaying. So not even
a direct delivery is allowed through AOL. You must go through another
e-mail client, but as I said, The Bat! is not correctly processing my
SMTP connection with ATT (it works on my ATT connection but this is a
simple set up without authentication). So here is my solution:

I found three web-based FREE e-mail clients. Most of those suggested
in the threads are not free anymore, or no longer accept new accounts,
or don't offer their SMTP sending service on their free accounts.
Here are three that are free and work with AOL. I gather e-mail
directly off my ATT account, but send through these:

Compustream:
http://www.compustream.net/register.asp

GMX, a German site - largest free e-mail site in Germany, pretty easy
to figure out even in german, use altavista tranlate/babelfish if
necessary (but you have to connect directly to sign in) And you have
to sign in with your whole e-mail address or customer number - in The
Bat! account set up in the user spot too.

softhome Gives free SMTP service, but says there are restricitons on
how often you may check your account and bandwidth restrictions (I
suspect they actually mean traffic, not strictly bandwidth) but they
don't specify the actual amounts - so we'll see.

Hi all,

A nice quick and easy one for you all.

How do I add page numbers to the bottom of each page printed?

Thanks,
