I'm not sure it's the port s 25 thing or not since I can configure the software to use another s port. Of course you can configure any port from your end to send, but the standard SMTP port is 25, used throughout the Internet, and they (AOL) will not allow any relaying on their port 25 / SMTP servers. Most ISPs will not allow relaying altogether, as this is spam haven. Mercury would work best if you had your own domain, and running your own mail server. Otherwise, I don't see any practical use for it, as TB! provides all the transport (SMTP POP3) info for any account that you have existing. s But AOL say's it will not relay messages or allow use of any s other software to send messages through it. But you are right, not very usefull for me -maybe I'll think of some reason this method of mail delivery would be preferable later. But with AOL on my portable computer for traveling with Win 98 (ugh). Re: ATT Broadband connections problems
Hi slug, On Wednesday, October 16, 2002, 12:08 PM, you mentioned about ATT Broadband connections problems: s Att works for me with Mercury, but AOL will not. Does not surprise me at all. AOL does not do anything standard. g s I got the IP address of the nameserver on my PC with ATT by s using IPConfig/ALL in the command prompt window (Win 2000) - they may s change over time so I may have to re-enter. But you are right, not s very usefull for me -maybe I'll think of some reason this method s of mail delivery would be preferable later. Well, if you are on the road a lot, try www.myrealbox.com Just open up an account, add the SMPT and POP3 stuff into the bat, and you are off and running. You can use this with any ISP you log onto and send mail and receive mail from TB! .. Bingo, you have a nice mail account. s But with AOL on my portable computer for traveling with Win 98 (ugh). s I (and helpers) did a Whois search and came up with IP addresses of s the nameservers but still got a message back from the server of We do s not relay non-local mail - sorry It will never work with AOL. s Incidentally, what and exactly how does one do a Whois search - I sort s of muddled through Google and went to a site where I entered AOL.com, s but is this really the way? You can use www.betterwhois.com to search all domain registers. In Linux, I just use the command line and do a dig or host, or whois command.. I can actually use their DNS servers directly to get this infodoing a dig and mx I get the following: ; DiG 9.2.1 mx aol.com ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; -HEADER- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 25764 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 4, AUTHORITY: 4, ADDITIONAL: 18 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;aol.com. Hi slug, On Wednesday, October 16, 2002, 12:16 PM, you mentioned about ATT Broadband connections problems: s ATT does not stop use of their nameserver so I can send through it, ^^^ SMTP server name server is DNS s but I can't connect to their nameserver through AOL on the portable - s maybe this is never possible - you're stuck with the ISP's nameserver s you are connected with? Yes, that is the problem. There must be an answer, see below. s now they do. But I want to use The Bat! anyway. Hopefully I can s configure The Bat! to get and send e-mail through a free account. s We'll see.I'm stuck with an AOL connection no matter what - on s the portable. All of these provide for a mail user, sending and receiving mail, *however* I do not know if they now provide for you to POP (get) your mail directly off their server now via using TB! Problem sharing a mailbox
Hi all, Here's the situation: I have a group of 4 people (a small company) who share a common address with the same username. I can't create aliases on the server, and the solution of forwarding all the mails from the main account to their personal ones isn't a possibility. TB! is configured to leave the messages on the server for 2 weeks so they all get the same e-mails, regardless of what each person does in its own inbox. It'd been working well for a couple of months, but now the problem is TB sees the old messages on the server as new and downloads them, even though they're already in TB's inbox on each workstation. If they use the kill dupes function, the messages are downloaded again! What should I configure to stop this behaviour? Given the volume of e-mails these ppl get, it's become a major problem. Thanks in advance for your help! DC Current version is 1.61 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: ATT Broadband connections problems
Hello slug, I thought I'd add one more message to this thread - my solution to the problem of sending e-mail through my AOL account while traveling, and using The Bat! to access and organize all my email. No luck with sending anything through AOL - not even with Mercury - they somehow prevent nameserver use as well as relaying. So not even a direct delivery is allowed through AOL. You must go through another e-mail client, but as I said, The Bat! is not correctly processing my SMTP connection with ATT (it works on my ATT connection but this is a simple set up without authentication). So here is my solution: I found three web-based FREE e-mail clients. Most of those suggested in the threads are not free anymore, or no longer accept new accounts, or don't offer their SMTP sending service on their free accounts. Here are three that are free and work with AOL. I gather e-mail directly off my ATT account, but send through these: Compustream: http://www.compustream.net/register.asp GMX, a German site - largest free e-mail site in Germany, pretty easy to figure out even in german, use altavista tranlate/babelfish if necessary (but you have to connect directly to sign in) And you have to sign in with your whole e-mail address or customer number - in The Bat! account set up in the user spot too. http://www42.gmx.net/ softhome Gives free SMTP service, but says there are restricitons on how often you may check your account and bandwidth restrictions (I suspect they actually mean traffic, not strictly bandwidth) but they don't specify the actual amounts - so we'll see. http://softhome.net/ -- Best regards, slugmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current version is 1.61 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
