Re: Should I not run iPhone only apps on my iPad?
Ok, afaik, the app shouldn't effect appstore's ability to work properly. iPhone apps can run on an iPad, all be it in a small bit of the screen in the middle. There is an option to expand into full screen, great for limited sight, as it is then big enough to see! iPad only apps on the iPhone are more problematic. Re: Should I not run iPhone only apps on my iPad?
Again, afaik, the app coding should always work on both as they're the same processor type and OS; it is only display size that is the operable issue. An iPhone app takes up a fraction of the display of an iPad, but it can blow it up full screen. An iPad app will assume so much display area it's never going to fit on the little iPhone screens. That's the simplification as I understand it. An iPad app should be smart enough to check this first, and exit once it realises, before trying to do anything stupid. BTW, I think it was BMW that pioneered the emergency spare wheel as a small one to save trunk/boot space, so it was just enough to limp home on. Terrible on potholes. - Original Message - From: Michael Reiser mike.rei...@icloud.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, April 27, 2014 2:43 AM Subject: Re: Should I not run iPhone only apps on my iPad? If I was sitting next to someone in a car or on a bus, they could hear what I was hearing. The new ones seem to be a little more sturdily constructed. The controls are on the right side, as opposed to the back, so they are more easily reached, and I think that this design puts less stress on the headband. The audio quality is much improved. Re: Seeking Your Thoughts
I had removed the USA Today app a long time ago because it was flakey with VoiceOver. : just downloaded it again and you are right. I get the exact behavior you describe. That is not a setting on your phone. There is clearly some kind of code in their app that is confusing VoiceOver. It is like they are using an end of article code at the end of each paragraph. I hear the bong sound like you hear when you get to the end of an article after each sentence or paragraph. I think if you describe that to the developer and asked them to look at how VoiceOver behaves, they can figure it out if they want to. Good luck, Richard There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing. - Aristotle On Apr 26, 2014, at 10:19 PM, Keith Bundy kb5...@gmail.com wrote: I am experiencing a problem with two apps, USA Today for Iphone and a local newspaper app called the Argus Leader. The only way I can read the remainder of the article is to flick right twice for each sentence. Flicking right once merely repeats the last sentence spoken. I have two questions. First, does anyone know of a setting on my phone I might be able to change in order to resolve this problem? Second, is there a particular thing causing this issue that I could mention to the companies who make and distribute these apps? Thanks for any thoughts you may have on these questions. Re: ibooks with braille, horizontal page scrolling?
You use it all the time, as this is how to turn pages in iPhone. That is, if you're using a Braille display. Braille doesn't scroll automatically, except by page, and that is when speech is on, and you're reading with the two-finger-flick-down with speech. Re: new aftershotz blues2
Hi, I am a big fan and daily user of the Aftershokz headphones. I have both the wired and bluetooth versions. I do not use the Aftershokz for music. I use Bose headphones for music. So, the Aftershokz are only used by me for podcast listening, audio books and text to speech. I had excellent success with the original Bluez model. I find them comfortable and for what I use them for, to me they sound great. The new Bluez 2 are nicely designed with the headband smaller because the controls are on the right side and not in the head band on the back. I like the sound of the Bluez 2 but they do have more bass and they vibrate my cheek bones more than the original Bluez do. I am not finding them quite as comfortable as the original Bluez model. They hurt my right ear after wearing them for an hour or more. This isn't terrible and I just adjust them once in awhile to ease the discomfort. The new Bluez 2 do have speech built-in. The voice is called Audrey. It is a very clear voice. It tells you when the headset is in pairing mode and it tells you battery status. When no audio is playing, pressing one of the volume buttons will report battery status. When the battery is needing a charge, Audrey says charge me. This comes as a bit of a surprise when listening to spoken audio and suddenly hear charge me. The volume and on/off buttons are very small and take a bit of searching to find them. The mini USB port is between the volume button and the power button. I do like the Bluez 2 and the addition of speech is nice. I think speech appeared in later versions of the original Bluez but mine didn't have it. I think the construction of the Bluez 2 is very solid. I am not at all sorry that I purchased them. Re: new aftershotz blues2
I have the original Bluez, which I just purchased a few months ago. I agree with the assessment below. Re: new aftershotz blues2
Chris, you might look into upgrading. Many people who bought the Bluez recently were able to get a free replacement if they had problems with their units. For instance, if my phone is in a pocket, I can't use the Bluez outside because the audio is too choppy. In fact, just behind down will usually cause the connection to drop entirely. Dear Sieghard, It is unfortunate that bing rewards is not available in Canada. Hopefully this will change soon. While the 100 GB is only for a year. I just had a look at this offer and one should mention that the 100 Gb you get by redeeming the Bing Rewards points is for 1 year only. Maybe this is good marketing because some people may not notice this or think about it, then they fill up their 100 Gb with all sorts of stuff and one year from now they are told they better pay up or loose it. Secondly, I am in Canada and when I just tried to sign up for a Bing Rewards account I got a message that Bing Rewards are not yet available in my country. Thanks I'll think about this. I mostly consider it an annoyance, and I'm not sure it's worth asking for a replacement. The noise bleed doesn't bother me much. I knew what I was getting when I ordered the Bluez, and I wonder how much of this can be addressed, given the technology being used. I still consider myself a happy Bluez customer. Thanks for the tip though, and I'm interested to keep hearing from those who've gotten the Bluez 2 and how these issues have been addressed. BTW, these are the most comfortable headphones I think I've ever used. I'd hate to lose that in an upgrade to a new model. RE: Sending txt with media?
Hi Robert, No, not with the iPhone if it is not jailbroken. If you made custom ringtones you could of course email them to somebody from the computer, if he or she is also an iPhone user they can then save them into their iTunes Media folder, add them to their tones library and sync them to their device. If the person is not an iPhone user you would have to first convert the M4R ringtone back to MP3. RE: [New post] Get 50GB of iDrive iOS cloud storage for 99 cents per year
Hi Kelly, I believe Box.com gives you 100 Gb of free storage, at least I got it a while back although I have yet to use the service. I find Dropbox works so well and of course OneDrive as well that I just can't be bothered with all the others. Unfortunately I missed that initial OneDrive promotion because I was in the Philippines at the time when they gave the first 100,000 people who converted from Skydrive to OneDrive 100 Gb free for life. But having said this, I think as time goes by, cloud storage becomes more popular and storage becomes less expensive (which it does all the time) Microsoft will offer more storage especially if you are maybe an Office 365 subscriber. On the other hand, $50 for 100 Gb of storage is actually quite inexpensive, that's about 96 Cents per weekor less than 14 Cents per day. Dropbox charges $9.99 a month or $99 if you pay for the year for the same 100 Gb, that's twice as much. I guess I carry on with my 25 Gb I had for quite some time. This maybe isn't enough for thousands of pictures, but it's plenty for quite a lot of regular documents. Re: Solution to sending text with videos and Pictures
I can't see the entire thread below, so I apologize if I'm missing anything, but the iPhone is plenty usable even with cellular data turned off. For example, you can use SIRI and iMessaging over wifi, just as you can use these features on the iPod and the iPad. I'm not sure why you say you need cellular data for these features. I'd assume that with wifi and the cellular radio turned on (which you need for calls and text messaging) that you'd be able to do pretty much everything on your iPhone, even if cellular data is turned off. BTW, you may want to turn off cellular data if you're getting close to your monthly limit, at least you might want to start being more judicious about it's use. RE: Solution to sending text with videos and Pictures
Hi Christopher, I guess our opinions here differ. The iPhone does an excellent job of always using WiFi if you are connected to your WiFi anyways. I am not sure if you actually save battery by turning cellular data off, maybe a bit, but if I am at work and I have to leave for a while to maybe go to the bank, grab some lunch or meet somebody, I really couldn't be bothered to unlock my phone, go to Settings and Cellular and turn it on because now I'm not on WiFi and maybe I received a text message which I want to reply to with SIRI or I need to check my email etc. That's the same as turning WiFi off when I'm not at home or at work, I also don't usually do that unless I am travelling and I know I'm not going to be on WiFi all day and that's actually even easier because I can just tell SIRI to turn it on or off. SIRI can also turn cellular data on or off, but of course if it's off and I'm not on WiFi anymore then I have to do it manually because SIRI of course won't work. It really comes down to a convenience thing and I don't mind recharging my iPhone every night which means I don't have to turn off everything to save another 3% battery here or 5% there. RE: Why siri can't make a call?
Hi Grace, That happens from time to time and there really isn't much you can do except try later. I guess you could try to turn your phone off completely and back on and see if that helps as sometimes it does. Transfering documents from one app to another app
Hi all, I have a few questions about transfering documents from one app to another app. Okay when I want to transfer documents from the prizmo app to the drop box app how do I go about doing it? Is it best to transfer documents from Prizmo to another app like dropbox? Also the documents I want to transfer are Lionss member addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers ect. These Lions member addresses are in three seperat documents, and I want to put all three Lions member addresses in one folder. So once I transfer the documents over to dropbox, how do I create a folder for my documents? I still haven't mastered how to use dropbox and I want to learn. Any suggestions and help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Lori and theGipper -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: An iDrive question about backups
Actually, I have been working with this a lot and I think it is so worth it. On my iphone it backed up my calendar, contacts, photos and videos. Not such a big deal but I was able to access the calendar from my PC and copy the list. And the items showed up as a list of just the calendar entries and not all the empty days. I have not been able to access the iCloud backup of the calendar so this was a biggie for me. I don’t have Outlook which I understand a lot of people use to sync calendars. It has taken some work and a learning curve but files are being uploaded from my computer and I was able to access them online. They are not all there yet since the original upload is huge. It chooses basic folders for you at first but you can exclude files or folders. I have Carbonite and am very unhappy with it as it does not back up my videos. My home videos are my most precious files and when I first got Carbonite I had to go in and add each individual video to the list. So I thought they were backed up. But now I find they are not. And I paid for the $99/year plan. I think the iDrive will back up enough of my important files that I will cancel Carbonite when it runs out. And the $.99 price is for every year, not just one year according to the sources I read. Using the app itself is a bit problematic, but I have had success using the Jaws cursor. And I think that the Sync folder that holds another 50 GB of stuff should really make a difference. I am trying to put different files in there rather than the ones the regular backup does so as to not duplicate. The Sync folder is a regular folder like Dropbox, I think. I will have to wait to see what gets uploaded from there. There are lots of help FAQ’s on the website and I have been reading through them. And, really, at 99 cents a year how can one go wrong? Re: Solution to sending text with videos and Pictures
I agree, and I don't personally turn my cellular data on or off. I'm all about convenience myself. I'm fortunate to have a unlimited data plan though. My children, who don't have unlimited plans, turn off their cellular data, or should, when they're getting close to their limits. The only time I've turned cellular data off myself, is when I'm traveling abroad, and I want to use my cell phone, but I don't want to run up large international data charges. Fortunately, since wifi is so ubiquitous, using an iPhone without cellular data can still be pretty effective, just as using an iPod or an iPad can be. I doubt turning cellular data off saves much battery life, since you're still using your cellular radio for texting and phone calls. I imagine turning it off is more to save on data charges as opposed to battery usage. On 4/27/2014 11:52 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hi Christopher, I guess our opinions here differ. I like this concept of doing Braille one-handed. I'm not clear on how to hold my fingers if it's going to be across the screen or lengthwise does the home key go to the writer left. With a free price tag (probably because the app is experimental), it becomes quite good. Currently, the app only receives input in grade I braille. Personally, I would like to see an option for switching to computer braille, but as the fourth finger position is used to indicate a blank column in the braille cell, this would be difficult. The instructions fail to mention how to backspace, which appears to be two three-finger swipes left or right while the iPhone is in landscape / braille input mode. The instructions are not clear about returning to the main screen by performing a three-finger swipe in the 90 degrees direction from the double swipe for backspace. Finally, comma (dot 2) is missing from the current braille input table. This is a braille keyboard entry app that I will use, especially as I can use it one-handed. Re: new aftershotz blues2
Robert, When going through the FAQs on the Aftershokz site, in reference to the Bluez 2, it was said that the amount of spoken feedback you can get is configurable, but it didn't say how to configure it. Also, I was unable to find a user guide for the Bluez 2. Perhaps this is because they are so new. Do you know anything about how the spoken output can be configured? Also, with the original Bluez, the battery charge status was on the status bar on the iPhone. I do not see it with the Bluez 2. The new Bluez 2 are nicely designed with the headband smaller because the controls are on the right side and not in the head band on the back. I bought my first set about a year ago, and had to get a replacement after a few months when I lost audio on one side. With the second set, the head band actually started falling apart. Many people who bought the Bluez recently were able to get a free replacement if they had problems with their units. For instance, if my phone is in a pocket, I can't use the Bluez outside because the audio is too choppy. In fact, just behind down will usually cause the connection to drop entirely. Plus, sound bleed is a huge problem. When I emailed sa...@aftershokz.com to ask about upgrading to the upcoming second-generation, they offered a free replacement. Hello Anouk, What type of Braille display are you using? IF you are using the Focus 14/40/80 Blue with your iPhone running iOS 5 or later, you can use the right rocker bar to perform the horizontal page change. RE: Why siri can't make a call?
Hello Rena, Generally speaking, Siri is unavailable during Apple server maintenance or updates. Again, generally speaking, the outages don't last very long although I suppose it depends on one's perspective. On occasion, after the maintenance has been completed, your copy of Siri will not be logged back into the system correctly. Therefore, if you want to make certain that you are connected to the Siri servers after any outages and you feel you have waited an appropriate amount of time, for example two hours or so, do the following: 1. From the Launch Pad, select Settings. 2. Select General. 3. Select Siri. 4. Double-Tap the Siri On button. 5. Double Tap the resulting Disable Siri button. This will log you out of the system. 6. Double-Tap the Siri Off button. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to activate Siri. 7. Finally, try using Siri. If everything is back up and running on the back-end of the system, you will be back in business. Re: new aftershotz blues2
Hi Andy, I contacted Aftershokz and they said that the online documentation was not yet ready. I do not know anything about how to configure the speech. For people who are having drop-out issues, I always carry my phone in my left front jeans pocket and don't have any drop-out with either the Bluez or Bluez 2. Also, if you are looking for a fabulous bluetooth headphone for music, I love the Bose AE2W over the ear headphones. They sound wonderful at least to me. Headphones are very subjective. It is always better to listen before buying if you can. Robert Carter On Apr 27, 2014, at 1:58 PM, Andy Baracco w...@socal.rr.com wrote: Robert, When going through the FAQs on the Aftershokz site, in reference to the Bluez 2, it was said that the amount of spoken feedback you can get is configurable, but it didn't say how to configure it. Also, I was unable to find a user guide for the Bluez 2. Perhaps this is because they are so new. Do you know anything about how the spoken output can be configured? Also, with the original Bluez, the battery charge status was on the status bar on the iPhone. I do not see it with the Bluez 2. Re: Searching long documents
This is a really unorthodox approach, but I find it works best for keeping my place in a long document in iOS. I turn a brf or brl document into pdf, which doesn't destroy it or change the formatting at all. You can use any word processor that saves or exports to pdf. Then I open the document in iBooks and turn Braille translation off. this all assumes you have a braille display. If you don't have a braille display, and you want to read a translated Braille file (I assume this book is in that format) then you won't be able to read it with speech in iOS. You would have to back-translate the file with Kurzweil, NFBTrans, or some other specialized software that will do this on your computer. Is the book available in other formats besides Braille? transfering from one app to another
Hi all, I have a few questions.I'm scanning some documents and other information I need. After I scan my information and documents I want to keep because I will need them. What I want to know is should I transfer all my inportant documents from Prizmo over to my dropbox? And if so, how do I transfer my documents from Prizmo over to dropbox? Also, will dropbox read all my documents? Also, if I have more than one document lets say for example Lions members contact information including addresses, emails, and phone numbers and any other info, how can I make up a folder so I can put all my Lions members addresses and other info into that folder and name it? Or can I just leave my documents in my Prizmo app? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Lori and the Gipper -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. google voice and notifications
Hey guys, Hoping someone can help. I use google voice text messaging with a aprticular group that i am with. Because we rely on it, is there any way i can set a custom notification for when i get a google voice text message? Furthermore, is there an app that will support this? I'd like to have this option, so it plays a unique sound that'll help me get to it quicker. Thanks, jed -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. three apps questions, Schwan's and VizWiz and Contacts
First, has anyone tried to update the Schwan's Frozen Food app from version 1.0.5 to 1.0.6? When I did so earlier today and then launched the app, it would just sit there and do nothing. Or, having no sighted folks around, that is how it appeared to me. And, no matter what I tried, even with turning VoiceOver off and trying to tap the screen, I couldn't get the app to do a thing. Second, when I then did the restore from iCloud, I was quite pleased to find that the version 1.0.5 of the Schwan's app did indeed get restored and did work, at least as well as the app did before, anyway. But, I was told that some things couldn't be restored from my iCloud backup. And, I finally figured out that the missing app was VizWiz. Then, upon further checking, I couldn't seem to find VizWiz in the app store, either. Fortunately, I never actually used the app, but was wondering if it still works for others, or is it gone completely? And, finally, third, what with VizWiz being gone, at least on my iPhone 4s, I had a blank space at the end of my second page of apps, something I would prefer to have at the end of my last page. So, I started trying to move apps around and messed things up quite nicely, so decided to go into settings and put the home screen back to its default layout. And, much to my surprise, having restored from backups for years now, I found contacts to be in an extras folder, rather than an app out by itself. Is this really the default for this app? I mean, I somehow thought it would be more prominently displayed. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: Searching long documents
Can NFBTrans translate BRF files into any other format besides TXT? Also, is there a batch translation option? I used a program called WinTrans, and I liked it okay, but I had to do files one by one, and you could only translate to the TXT format. Now that my book sense is no longer working, I'm looking into translating all of my BRF files into some format other than TXT, hopefully, and then dumping them all into Voice Dream Reader. Then I open the document in iBooks and turn Braille translation off. this all assumes you have a braille display. If you don't have a braille display, and you want to read a translated Braille file (I assume this book is in that format) then you won't be able to read it with speech in iOS. RE: three apps questions, Schwan's and VizWiz and Contacts
Hi Vicky, If I run into a situation when after an app update the app seems to not work correctly I always make sure to remove all apps from the app switcher and then to power off the phone, wait 30 or so seconds and then turn it on again. If that doesn't help it's probably not a bad idea to delete the app and to redownload it in order to make sure nothing went wrong with the update. If the app still has accessibility issues or just doesn't seem to run, then it's pretty safe to say that indeed the update has broken something and it's time to restore a previous version and to maybe contact the developer. As for restoring a previous version, if you sync your apps with iTunes it is not necessary to to a complete restore from iCloud. All you have to do is make sure you don't update the app in iTunes so that you have the last version there which you know works, then delete the app from the phone and then resync it from iTunes. As for Vizwiz, yes, it is gone at least from the Canadian app store. I searched for Vizwiz on iTunes with Google and found the app store link no problem. When I clicked on it Internet Explorer asked me if I would allow it to open a program on my computer by which it meant iTunes. I allowed it and when iTunes opened I got a message that VizWiz was no longer available in the Canadian app store. I only had the option to click OK, sometimes I have seen messages that a particular app was not available from the Canadian app store, but was available from a different app store, but not this time. Well, I guess at this point that is no great loss since everytime I tried Vizwiz in the last few months it took forever for an answer to come back, often 3 to 4 hours and sometimes not until the next day. Because of this I hadn't used it in a long time and didn't even have it on my phone any more. Let's hope Tap Tap See will be able to include the ability to ask a question along with the picture in some future update, but even without this I find that Camfind, Talking Goggles and Tap Tap See often give me what I want. If not my Ask Mom app works awesomely *smile*. OK, before a dozen people ask where they can find the Ask Mom app it doesn't exist. It is just my way of saying that calling my Mom (or another friend or relative for that matter) with Facetime and asking them to take a look at whatever it is I am trying to identify or do is often the best way to get a great answer. As for your third question about Contacts, yes, that is the default. I personally find I rarely use the actual Contact app because I can just as easily get to my contacts by going into the Phone or Facetime app and tapping on the Contacts tab. I have Contacts in a folder I called Utilities on my second home page and if I really want it, I just turn the rotor to handwriting and write a C and O on the screen, I then get Compass as the first result and a quick 2-finger swipe down puts me on Contacts. RE: transfering from one app to another
Hi Lori, You can very easily send Prizmo documents to Dropbox. Just double tap on the document and select Export. You are presented with a menu which includes the following: Send by mail Send message Open In Select Open In. prizmo now asks you to choose an export format, select the one you want, e.g. Prizmo document, text, PDF etc. If you scanned a business card, it may also give you the option to export as a VCard. After you make your selection you get a menu where you can choose where you want to export to. This usually includes Airdrop (if you have an Airdrop capable device) and if you have Dropbox installed, one option will be to Open in Dropbox. Select this and you will then get a screen where you can edit the file name if you wish and you have the Save Location which is Dropbox. Double tap on Dropbox and you see a listing of all your Dropbox folders. At the bottom is a Create Folder button which let's you create a new folder if you wish. You can also double tap an existing folder and when it opens you can create a new subfolder in it by once again using the Create Folder button. Once you are in the folder you want, double tap on the Choosebutton at the bottom right to select it. If you now check the Save Location it will not say Dropbox any more, but announce whichever folder you selected. Now double tap on Save at the top left of the screen and your document will be saved in that folder. Note that you are now in the Dropbox app and no longer in the Prizmo app, you can bring up the app switcher to return to the Prizmo app and you'll be back in your document so use the Documents button at the top left to go back to the main Prizmo page. For $140 a month it better be included! In my opinion these early upgrade plans are quite a rip-off, sorry Joseph, but that's just my opinion. Help with working with a document in pages thank you
Hi all, I have just started using the app Pages. I edit my document in MBraille and then pasted into pages. I don't understand how to read it though or how to move around in the document. It is my journal and is very long. I can't understand how to go from page to page or how to move around and reading the document. For example when I get to page 17 of the document which is my last page, I find three places that say canvas in the each give me a page such as page 17 of 17 and so on. Each one of them has a different set of pages. How do I number one know which page I am on, get to the page I want to, get to the end of the document so I can paste something else in, and I think that is it for now. I want to thank whoever takes on this task of helping me. I would very much appreciate the help, because I surely do not understand Pages at all. I like the app though and I think once I understand it I will be okay with it. I love the idea of being able to use MBraille to write, edit, and paste my document into pages. God bless, Wren Langley and thank you again for the help. Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
