Re: NTSC & PAL Quicktime movies
Now obviously the disk has to be one or the other but just how can you tell the two file formats apart ? (pixel count/frame rate ???) NTSC has a resolution of 720x480 pixels (typically 29.97 frames per second :) PAL has a resolution of 720x576 pixels (typically 25 frames per second) Have fun, Shay (There is *much* arcana in TV, video and film formats. 5.1a not only runs a lot faster and does everything I want but it also does one thing I have not managed to master in any version from 6 on. Does any one know of a simple CAD program which will do the same job? I just need type boxes with tabs, lines, an easy system of alignment and the ability to print charts on multiple A4 or A3 pages. I already own Illustrator but aligning things accurately is more difficult than in Canvas. Re: No ibooks?
What is going on with there being no ibooks available for purchase in Australia. I have a student where I work who wants to purchase one and has called Eastern states places, WA places and all over Oz and there isn't one to be had. Why is Apple doing this to us (and our resellers who will no doubt be adversely affected by this)?! It's close to start of the US academic year, so I expect most machines are being redirected towards there... Also there seem to be various parts shortages on various models (including the G5 processors for the new iMacs). Re: help! ipods and PCs with 4-pin firewire
Hi Greg, thanks for your reply! I had already checked your web site. The problem with a male-to-male cable like those ones is that there's nothing on the iPod to plug them into (unless he also buys a PocketDock for about $50). With a male-to-female adaptor or cable the Apple-provided dock connector cable could be used, and such an adaptor is likely to cost much less than $70 (PocketDock and cable). More like $10-$15 I think. So finding one would be much better. Am I missing something in all of this? I suspect you'll find that the firewire standard is that hardware has female ports on it and cables are male. So you're unlikely to find what you're looking for, or are likely to spend more than $50 worth of your time looking for it! Can anyone suggest what, if anything I can do to try and salvage my data. This hard disk was my backup hard drive, not my boot disk. Re: Using Mac to transfer analogue video to DVD - what do I need?
If I had a PC, then the solution appears to be <http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Product_Id= 144533>. However I use a 1.5GHz PowerBook 17" running OS X 10.3.5. I have numerous hours of VHS home video which, for reasons of longevity and storage, I'd like to transfer to DVD. I guess I could copy the VHS footage to MiniDV tapes using my Sony HandyCam, but that would surely get tedious. I presume I need to buy some kind of hardware interface between my VCR player and the PowerBook in order to use the PowerBook's DVD burning capability. Could someone please tell me what options are available? Does your Handycam support DV playthrough? If so you can hook the VCR -> handycam -> Powerbook and play from the VCR straight into iMovie or Final Cut Pro. Re: OSX File Permissions Question
Hi, I have a question I am hoping the list can answer. A friend is running OSX and has deleted a login account. The files associated with that user have been left behind and she now wishes to delete them but the files say they belong to the "system" Can anyone please advise as to how I can delete the files for her? You could try getting info (command-i) on the old user folder in the finder and changing its privileges to allow anyone to read/right it. If that fails you could get into the Terminal (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder) and type sudo chmod -R 777 /Users/username You'll then be prompted type in the password of the user account you're currently logged in as (assuming it has administrator privileges). After that you should be able to drag the folder to the trash from the Finder. If you can't do any of that you probably need to find an account with administrator privileges on that machine, or set one up. Re: Dumb Questions About Broadband
Hi Folks Finally Telstra and iiNet have got their act together and my ADSL application has been approved. Please can you help with the following dumb questions: I plan to connect the service to our G3 iMac in the study. My wife and I connect our iBook and powerbook to the iMac by Software Basestation using our airport cards and thus access the internet from the loungeroom. 1. We can still do this with the iMac on ADSL? I suspect the answer is yes, (assuming the iMac can provide DHCP and NAT for the iBook and PowerBook). 2.Have we chosen the correct modem? We have ordered the D-Link DSL-200 USB Modem the other choices we had were the D-Link DSL-300 Ethernet Modem / D-Link DSL-500 Ethernet Router or the D-Link DSL-504 Ethernet Router. Ethernet modems are a much better idea. USB wasn't really designed for networking. I've got a DSL-500 (as I already had an 8 port hub). One of the disadvantages of using a USB modem is that you'll have to leave the iMac on if any of the machines want to connect to the internet. Of course if you're using wireless you'd have to do that anyway as it's acting as the base station... If you're using a USB modem it will also increase the processing load and decrease the responsiveness of the iMac. If the iMac gets rebooted or has a hard drive crash everyone's network connection goes away until it's back. 3. If we want to connect either of our laptops directly to ADSL eg to run Software Update (rather than wirelessly) how do we do it? Do we plug the new modem into the laptop or do we use an ethernet cable to connect laptop to iMac (hence the question 2. Have we got the right modem?) If you've got the USB modem you need to either plug it directly into the laptop you want connected, or set the iMac up to provide DHCP and NAT on its ethernet port (which Software BaseStation probably won't do, but some commandline unix utilities probably do). If you have a DSL-504 you can plug either or both PowerBooks directly into the back of the router. If you've got the DSL-500 you can only have one thing plugged in at a time (unless you've got an Ethernet hub). IPNetRouter might also be a useful tool for you if you go the USB route <http://www.sustworks.com/site/prod_ipnrx_overview.html> although these days I think it's basically a graphical front end for various unix tools. Re: New Apple Seller in Perth
I have had a couple of off list replies about this topic. It seems there is a bit of shyness based on past episodes which have gone out of control. Curious. I believe that paid-up WAMUG corporate sponsors are allowed one advert per week to the mailing list, provided it clearly includes an identifying tag in the 'Subject' line. Employees of corporate sponsors are welcome to answer questions on the list, and seem to do so reasonably regularly. People harvesting all the WAMUG e-mail addresses for their own mailing list is however frowned upon (as it is all over the internet). A simple post to the WAMUG list informing people how to get onto the company's mailing list would be sufficient (and providing instructions on a valid way to unsubscribe from the list as well!) I'm sure if any businesses have any questions about contributing to the list the committee would be more than happy to answer them. Re: OT Planning my visit to Perth... Need some advise and info
CBD - Mounts Bay Waters Apartment http://www.mount-bay-apartment-hotel.com.au/ You could also check out the Emerald Hotel <http://www.ehp.emeraldhotel.com.au/>, they have been hungry for (convention) business at times and might be able to organise a discount for a month's stay. The sticking point for me as a Mac Consultant is I will need to still service my clients while here, so I need to have high speed internet access while I'm in Perth. The apartment in Scarborough is willing to install it. What would be the best service? I've seen mention of Big Pond are there other that are more reliable? Well, it just took 38 days for my folks ADSL hookup (according to Westnet apparently Telstra managed to lose the connection request), so if you're only going to be here for a month I'd make sure that the ADSL is organised well beforehand! Or just hope you're close to a friendly wireless node. Pretty much Telstra handles all their own (Bigpond's) competitor's ADSL hookups (except iinet's in select cases) so you're pretty much at their whim. Does anyone have an opinion about which air carrier to use when flying to Perth from Melbourne? We have seen Quantas,of course, and also Virgin Blue ??? Those are about the only options. One of the joys of living in Perth is how expensive it is to get anywhere else in the world :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>

Re: pricing a S/H P29 G3 iBook
I have a couple of work colleagues who each have identically specked original 2001 snow 12.1" G3 iBook (code name "P29") 500Mhz, 128 MB, 10GB, CD-ROM (no burner) original purchase academic staff price would have been about $2000ish. One of them wants $700 for it - which is, in my mind is more than just a bit too much for a 4 year old laptop that even in its day was entry level. The other owner is undecided about if she want's to sell _right_ now. As I plan to purchase this week I may not be able to acquire it soon enough. The first person has given me e-bay action bid details and to be quite blunt it only shows how thick some people are as some of these bids are for more than the cost of a new G4 iBook. Speaking to some of other mac experts wasn't all that helpful, While I was in X-World the guys in Syndey wer saying $200 up to $250 tops. but a couple of apple guys here I've spoken to here are saying $500 to buy The monetary worth of something is what it costs to replace it. What the market will bear is best reflected on eBay, the authoritative source of all pricing information in our capitalist economic rationalist society :) <http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4606&item=5106639123&rd=1> The one I can see there is $570 with a days left of bidding to go, so $250 would seem a bit unreasonable (to the seller :). Is it possible to wirelessly network a g3, and two early model 233mhz imacs, all running 9.2? > >Well, it would have been easier until Lucent EOL'd the original Airport cards... You might still be able to purchase them somewhere... Actually, Greg Sharp pointed out that early model 233MHz iMacs don't have airport slots, you need at least a slot-loading iMac. So you'd need some form of wireless access point for each iMac, or a hub connecting both of them and a wireless access point. no antenna on the G3 - one of the old beige boxes... You may be able to find a PCI wireless card carrier (a normal wireless card in a carrier that plugs into a PCI slot) that will work under OS 8.6, but I wouldn't be holding my breath. Otherwise you'd need to hook it up using a wireless access point, which is all starting to get a bit expensive. A thought from anyone knowledgeable... Is it possible to wirelessly network a g3, and two early model 233mhz imacs, all running 9.2? Well, it would have been easier until Lucent EOL'd the original Airport cards... You might still be able to purchase them somewhere... You don't say which G3. Some had built in Airport antennas, but would also need a card. As to sharing the printer, can you currently share the printer under 9.2? If not then don't expect it to work wirelessly. Re: kids and computers
Can anyone suggest how we can control our kids computers from our G5 so that we can stop them staying up late and going on line when they should be asleep. I can password protect the machines but I would rather be able to control them from our home office. tom samson These days the general recommendation is that children's computer use be supervised (ie computers should be in the family room, not the kids bedroom). Of course that may not be possible depending on where the machine is and who uses it. You could always try Apple Remote Desktop (new version 2.0 out soon) or VNC which would let you monitor what's on their screen (some people may argue with this due to privacy implications) Failing that, take the ADSL modem, hub, airport or networking cable to bed with you :) Have fun, Shay -- ======= Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>

Re: Worried about the Free Trade Agreement with the US? You Should Be!
Hello, all WAMUGGERS, this is desperately in need of our full support! Please take a moment & support the blocking if the FTA legislation in the Senate. If we do nothing now we can expect to reap the results in years to come...all bad! People may also want to review the Electronic Freedom Association's submissions to the Senate Committee on the Intellectual Property and Copyright provisions of the FTA <http://www.efa.org.au/Issues/IP/index.html#fta> Want to record shows off HDTV in a couple of years time? TV stations may be able to decide which shows you can or can't tape in the future. Want to copy that book from 50 years ago that's no longer in print? Sorry, it's just gone back into copyright for another 20 years. EFA is opposed to Australia signing or implementing the provisions of Chapter 17 of the FTA. In particular, EFA is concerned that: * consideration of Chapter 17 should be approached from the perspective of promoting innovation and the public domain, rather than protecting existing business models and punishing infringers * the Chapter 17 expansions are likely to impede rather than promote free trade and innovation * there is no justification for extending copyright protection to 70 years * the criminal law has only a limited role in intellectual property law and should not be expanded * the proposed circumvention device bans are overly strict and have more potential to be used as weapons against competition and innovation than for it * the proposed rights management information provisions would unduly extend the power position of copyright holders and impinge upon consumers' rights to deal with legitimately purchased goods * presumptions towards subsistence and ownership of copyright are unnecessary and weight proceedings too far in favour of those claiming rights as opposed to those defending them * the provisions relating to damages would result in unrealistic determinations and increase the power of copyright holders * the take-down notice provisions are unfairly weighted in favour of those making allegations * ISPs should not be force to divulge personal information about customers except after judicial order * the FTA would commit to allowing any and all 'technologies' to be patented, regardless of whether a need for patentability is demonstrated Chapter 17 of the Australia - United States of America Free Trade Agreement contains a range of proposals that would significantly expand intellectual property rights in Australia. These expansions are clearly not in Australia's best interests and must be rejected. Re: [Fwd: Re: Coding resources]
I wish at uni they had decided to teach us in php first... The advantage of PHP is that it is easy to learn, and useful, more useful than you can imagine... I build websites in php all day long... Cheers Paul PHP is not generally applicable outside the domain of web pages though, so it wouldn't be used in a general programming course (Now I think of it, I would never have been taught it when I started because there wasn't a World-wide web, nor a PHP :) But yes, it is very useful! Re: Coding resources
Thanks Shay! Looks like I will be giving Python a go, as it seems to be easier to understand for a beginner better than C/Java. Are you able to take advantage of the Mac interface with Python, or does it out put to a Terminal window? There are objective-C bindings for it, but I've yet to play with them. <http://pyobjc.sourceforge.net/doc/tutorial.php> <http://pyobjc.sourceforge.net/> If you want to write GUI applications then RealBasic is also a good starting point <http://www.realbasic.com/> it's portable across Mac, Windows and Linux and has a GUI development environment. If you're really into writing Mac applications you may want to delve into Objective C at some stage. Whilst not as widely applicable as C++ you'll probably find it's nicer :) But IMHO Python offers a nice starting point which can get you into control structures, variables, classes etc. Then you can try using other languages and work out what they're missing! Personally I find that evolving one's learning following a path through the historical evolution of languages (computers, literature, standards, whatever) is a good map for a learning path, as you can become familiar with the shortcomings of each system which will make you appreciate the improvements in the new ones, whilst still being able to cope when someone drops you in front of a 1960's style unix commandline prompt :) Not that I'd start with COBOL or APL however! Re: A Uniformity of Computers
"In the interest of improving learning opportunities for students, DET aims to phase out the myriad different computers used in schools, along with individual servers." The report progresses to the statement that "a uniformity of computers and software would ensure fast, efficient in-house support services, better product quality and lower maintenance costs for schools." Please consider Reg I expect this is part of their bureaucratese code for "we're going to use Microsoft". Uniformity that relies on lock-in to a vendor's closed standards when that vendor is going to shaft you for licence fees every year is really not going to lower costs overall. Imagine the Irish government issuing a document calling for the uniformity of potatoes, just before the potato blight lead to the famine. Having a heterogeneous mix means that if some new threat comes along it doesn't wipe out *all* your systems in one hit. Having to continually patch everything to stop viruses from spreading like wildfire isn't going to reduce support costs. <http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/biztech/02/16/microsoft.monoculture.ap/> In my experience, uniformity of systems leads to tunnel vision. Being able to exist in multiple niches allows you some flexibility should some of those niches disappear due to conditions beyond your control. Re: Coding resources
Hi All! Anyone know of a good resource to learn how to code? I'd suggest Python. It has excellent tutorials, is cross platform and is already installed on the Mac by default. Go to <http://www.python.org/doc/2.3.4/> and click the Tutorial link. Really, once you've learned to program in one style of language, you should be able to handle any other language from the same class of languages (ie declarative, functional or procedural) with a little more experience, and become proficient once you've experienced all the standard mistakes a couple of times. Good languages will be designed to prevent you from making stupid mistakes, because typically your development time is more important (and expensive) than the computer's execution time. I have been reading up on C at the moment, then hopefully progressing to C++ at some stage (got to have goals!). Books or online are welcome! C++ and C are good in the way that McDonalds hamburgers are good. And if you want to program the Mac you should look towards Objective C anyway. Anton Hilleglass's book is pretty good, or I think there's one published by O'Reilly that's also had good reviews <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321213149/qid=1088560948/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/002-4045188-7910462> Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>

However, only the thumbnail is available within iPhoto so they will not enlarge properly in iPhoto. sorry missed this last point - to ACTUALLY use and take advantage of the RAW format to any extent at all you have to use a program that USES the RAW data and not the appended TIFF - Photoshop can't deal with RAW data in any way and just ignores (but keeps) it as file meta-data (unless Photoshop CS now includes it) such a program would have come on a CD with your camera or there are several other ones that will do the job as well if not better. In the end I selected a camera that doesn't do RAW images so the pre purchase research is all I know about actually using RAW data in post processing There was a recent discussion of image formats in part III of Beyond MegaPixels <http://www.thetechlounge.com/article.php?directory=beyond_megapixels_part_3&page=2> Might be interesting to some. Re: iBook G3 Desktop G4 sharing
Edward wrote: ADSL with an ethernet modem Setting up Internet access -- First, make a note of the machine's (that is currently connected to the internet) TCP/IP settings in the Network panel of the System Preferences. Then, assuming none of the machines have Airport, the next step is to connect them physically via ethernet. If your Ethernet ADSL modem doesn't have spare ethernet ports on the back you'll need to obtain an Ethernet hub into which you plug the modem and all the computers you want to network. If not you'll just need to plug them into the back of the modem. You may need to get extra ethernet cables for this. This assumes that your ethernet modem does NAT (Network Address Translation), which lets you share your one IP address that's visible on the internet amongst multiple machines on your LAN (which aren't visible as individual addresses on the internet). Hopefully your modem also does DHCP. In which case you need to set each of the machines up to get its IP address via DHCP. You can set their DNS settings to be the same as those you noted down earlier from your original TCP/IP settings. Then, fire up a web browser on each machine and check that you can access various web pages. Sharing files - Go to the Finder, choose "Mac Help" from the Help menu and search for "Sharing Files", double click "Sharing files on your network" and follow the instructions. Re: Mac OS 8.6 IMAP client
Hi all, My trusty PB1400 runs 8.6 and I'm looking for an IMAP client that doesn't take six years to load. I played a little with an older version of Eudora - I forget which, but it requires a system key chain to talk to IMAP and I cannot figure out how to do that under 8.6. I'd rather avoid Lookout Express, but if that is all there is... Any suggestions? Mulberry <http://www.cyrusoft.com/mulberry/> Not sure if it'll run under 8.6 though. Re: NetGear WG302 ProSafe WAP Info
Your reference to dLink is incorrect. You can configure any of their devices that I am aware of using a web-browser. Their own software runs under Windows only AFAIK, but it is not required at all. Unless you want to do a firmware upgrade and have a version of the firmware that doesn't yet support x-modem firmware upgrades via the console serial port. Then you need a PC. This is probably only relevant if you're buying ancient (ie 2 years old :) secondhand D-Link equipment, otherwise a Mac should be fine. > 3 What are your experiences with extension antennae? Re: email hijack?
1) I've just started to get spam offering cheap software (& bad spelling) - yes, I know, welcome to the club. The strange thing I noticed today was that the recipient (ie me) was shown as Fred Rivka - I've never used the name Fred Rivka - does that mean that someone with a "Fred Rivka" alias is messing with my mail or is it just as the result of some email virus somewhere cutting and pasting different names and email addresses together? Virus/spammer. I predict you'll start getting german spam next, if you aren't already. 3) Yesterday I decided to add a new sub-folder & when I went to the "New" drop-down menu there were lots of new "options" which had small brown rectangular icons followed by text which seemed to be related to various internet sites I had visited - very strange - and the menu was not working properly. I quit OE and re-launched it and the extra "options" had disappeared & it all seemed to work again. (Strangeness #2 is still happening though) That and #2 are probably because OE is crappy. Or else #2 is because BigPond is crappy :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>
Re: Accessing monitor geometry
Just one more puzzle - why did it take 5 days for my first reply to get posted on the list? Well, everything on the WAMUG list happens from the goodness of our collective hearts, so sometimes posts don't get a response straight away (or at all) as real life intervenes :) As a voluntary community mailing list, responses aren't guaranteed to be accurate, cause no damage, or even occur at all! Re: Accessing monitor geometry
Is that from OS 9 or X? Its possible that X does not recognise ADB fully, only enough for a keyboard and mouse to work. If you haven't tried the geometry in 9, give that a go. It would be interesting to see if it works properly in native OS 9 (not through Classic). Seeya Rod! Monitor geometry certainly works under 9 for a 21" AppleVision display. Re: Keychain gone freaky
Hello, WAMUGgers, Suddenly, without warning, keychain access seems to have changed its password. I'm the only one who uses this machine, and I didn't do it! I have always left it at the default password, the same one I use to start the computer. This password no longer works. I looked in Help, and found the following advice and tried it, but it hasn't worked. Reboot. See if the Keychain works. Make a backup of your keychain. Then try opening Keychain Access and then choose Keychain First Aid from the Window menu. You should then be able to verify or repair the keychain. If 10.2.8 doesn't have this option, you can download a Keychain First Aid application from Apple. While you're at it run Disk Utility and DiskWarrior (if you've got it) over your drive to see if there's anything amiss they can detect. Good luck, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>
Re: Config problem
I inadvertently switched of my Imac (Sys 9.2,1) without shutting down. Now quite a lot of document icons appear plain and do not open when clicked, they have to be opened from within the application. Any suggestion for the solution would be appreciated. Thanks Paul. Sounds like you need to rebuild the Desktop database. Reboot, and hold down the command and option keys just as the last of your extensions load. The Finder should ask if you want to rebuild your desktop. Re: ipod reliability (was: 30" monitor laugh)
We had a perfectly good 7220 and a perfectly good 8600 here. We only retired them early last year. The 8600's power supply did die, but given how old it was that was more than reasonable. I wasn't even aware there was a known fault with those models. The 7220's were from the Gil Amelio reign of economic rationalism, and had all the appeal, design and reliability of a cheap PC. Apple never admitted the 8600 problem, despite Stuart Fist's column in The Australian, and numerous queries on the WAMUG list over the years. I'm sure the guys at Computer Trade Centre could tell you all about it, as they're the ones who'd fix it for $80 rather than Apple's $300. > Thinking that there are more problems recently is probably more likely a result of 'now-centredness' Or the fact that I was out of the 'mac world' for quite a while, something I tend to forget as I used the very old macs (Plus, SE/30, LCIII) and use the new ones now. Oh, in that case you probably forgot about the underspecced overheating caps in the Mac Plus that always needed to be replaced with higher spec ones :) Sounded like a shotgun going off when they blew! Re: ipod reliability (was: 30" monitor laugh)
Again, I can agree with that. What gets me, though, is that there's a growing history of systematic design and manufacturing problems. Would you expect the history of problems to decrease as time passes? History, by its very nature will get larger... Or perhaps people would just forget about the 7220, the 1710, the 8600 power supplies in Australia, or any of the other issues from the past? Thinking that there are more problems recently is probably more likely a result of 'now-centredness' Have fun, Shay -- ======= Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>
Re: ipod reliability (was: 30" monitor laugh)
Is it just me, or has the quality of Apple's lower end gear been getting worse and worse over the last year or two? Our G4s and PowerBook G3 here have been rock solid, and I don't hear much about dying G5s or PowerBooks, but there seems to be constant talk of lower-end products like iBooks, iPods, and eMacs dying. Comments anybody? I'm sure if you trawl through the list archives you can find similar comments from a few years back. There's the usual pressure to be more competitive which involves looking for cheaper ways to do things in order to be able to lower prices and yet keep the same profit margins. Are you surprised that the lower end gear isn't as reliable as the higher priced stuff? As the saying goes, "Cheap, fast, good, pick any two". Even given the same quality level, if you ship more products (and Apple ships a lot of iPods) you're going to wind up with more people with faults. And with more of them on the internet, there's going to be more complaints. Re: Voodoo Cards
I once put 6 video cards (all nubus) in the first Mac I bought for myself - a screaming $8000 16MHz 1MB RAM Mac II back in the late 80's Once as a junior support officer at WACAE (now ECU) I had to go to UWA's Electronic Enginering School (?) to see a guy who was using, I think, Stairway's "Rev R Dist" to get some help with a problem we were having in our lab. I think you mean Stairways' "Assimilator" early last year in my (now not so) new job we had a clean up and hired a mini skip bin. Of course putting a min skip out at UWA is a red rag to a bull and every Joe Blow with computer to trash tries to slip it in to our bin. Usually I thought it was every Joe Blow turns up and tries to grab stuff out of the bin :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>

Re: iPod with Cable to stereo
I currently have an iPod hooked up to my stereo via the dock. I'd like to put the dock near my bed which would require the use of a relatively long cable. Does anyone know how long a cable can be used with 3rd G iPod before audio quality begins to fade? Thanks Ruben A. Franke That depends on the quality of the cable. For long cables you need good shielding to prevent interference (like mains hum), and low impedance (to prevent signal loss). As a rule of thumb, thicker cables are usually better (usually because they've got shielding). Of course, you don't have to spring for big $$$ to buy oxygen free karma-balanced gold optic fibre that the Hi-Fi stores would like to sell you, just don't buy the cheapest cable and expect to get good quality audio/video/data over long distances :) Have fun, Shay -- ======= Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge [EMAIL PROTECTED] fnord <http://sungroper.asn.au/>
