Re: Skype
Thanks Marcus, Peder and Neil, Neil I have tried to follow Crazytechtricks website suggestions and others. It wouldn’t work for me because the 4 digit number code Skype sent (?) never arrived on my phone. However, after much frustration suddenly I could enter my old user name and password. It’s all working now - without getting a MS account. A friend tried to install the new Skype last night. He ended up getting the MS account, but his new user name from now on is his phone number. His contacts are not listed. Nobody will be able to find him. He is wondering if he can still change the user name to his old one. Yes Marcus, I am using WhatsApp all the time. I like it and it does everything for my requirements - but it won’t work on the desktop computer. Re: Skype
Hi Walter, Skype was bought by MS in 2011 and, like Google and Facebook, MS would prefer that you do as much as possible via their MS account login ;o) However AFAIK you do not HAVE to use Skype by signing in via an MS account. A quick google of "use Skype without a MS account will bring up many articles but, since terms and conditions and operating parameters change frequently for these online services, I find it always best to filter to newer articles. Sometimes these articles are spot-on, sometimes they are rubbish -up to you how much time you want to spend investigating these - my yardstick tends to be how much can I mess up if I get it wrong - so lots of reading/research before messing with system settings or delving too far in terminal. However you just want to use Skype so, for any solution that does not involve downloading dubious software or connecting via unknown sites, I would tend to just try it out. This article <https://crazytechtricks.com/use-skype-without-microsoft-account/> is not particularly well written but it is fairly recent and the suggestions fairly simple. Basically it offers two approaches: 1 Create a Skype account without creating a MS account, 2 Just use Skype without any account. Personally, I have an Office 365 subscription (can't live without Excel) so I do have an MS account - so I have no idea if/how well these methods work. You would have to decide which one you would prefer depending on how much you intend to use Skype - I would imagine a Skype account is useful if you intend to use it a bit, especially from more than one device. So maybe just give it a try? HTH Neil -- Neil R. Re: Recording Skype conference calls
Hi Ronni I did end up choosing this one last night for an initial test as I was on call this morning at 10. It seems to have worked as I only payed back a few minutes & all participants seem to be recorded - so, good. The recording just appears as one .mov file - can’t see individual tracks though they may be hidden (?) but that is not important to me at this point in time. Thanks for your thoughts & expertise as well. Re: Recording Skype conference calls
A technique I have used with webconferencing software is to record the minutes on the fly, while sharing the screen with everyone. This way, everyone sees the minutes as they are being written and can point out inaccuracies in the moment. The other advantage is that the minutes are available almost as soon as the meeting is over. Of course, this means that the software you use has to have screen sharing capability, and Skype probably doesn't have this. How about Google Hangouts? Re: Recording Skype conference calls
Alex, I know there is screen capture recording software around, but a simply option might be to set up a video camera - ipad, iphone or traditional video camera - pointing at the screen and it would record the sound, and the video would show enough detail for you to pick up who is saying what at any time. Re: Skype and Mac Mini
Hi Kevin, To follow on from Tim and John. I have two Mac minis and both have audio in and out. However, I did a quick check using MacTracker software and the earliest Mac mini (2005) has no audio at all while a slightly later version (late 2005) has audio out only. If the Mac mini in question has no audio in then as Tim say, you can use a USB headset. Re: Skype and Mac Mini
Kevin I have a 2009 Mini and use a USB headset Freetalk Everyman I think it's called. I bought it from Skype direct Works very well and is comfortable to wear. Good clarity over VOIP lines. I 'think' I have used the regular iPhone earplugs with built in mike and plugged it straight I to the headphone port on the Mini, but can't recall specifically doing so. This could be an option if they already have a set, but as they are expensive new, a USB headset might bettter option. There IS a 'mike in' input too, should that be needed. Re: Using Skype
Thanks Daniel and Susan for the useful suggestions. It took longer than expected to get set. Firstly I had forgotten that I had an original Skype ID a good many years ago when my son was overseas, and secondly, to prove my bona fides, I had to decipher and type contorted words of black and white text. I gradually got the idea, and after about thirty attempts, got one correct and was able to get a new ID. Family assertions that I have no imagination are obviously correct! Re: Using Skype
With the MacBook you will be able to use video Skype. If your iPad is the 1st generation you can only make Skype voice calls because of the lack of a camera. Both are free calls, of course. Security of Skype and Webinars
Hello 'Muggers I have been offered a session for myself and a few friends to participate in a demonstration of Skype and a Webinar service including video conference, screen sharing and file transfer. As the host I am concerned about security of my home Wi-Fi network and computer hacking.I am not so concerned about Skype "eavesdropping", which seems to be the official Skype focus when discussing "security". The demonstrator will use his laptop but connect to my home Wi-Fi network. He would like to contact his friends in Sydney and South Africa to demonstrate the gamut of video conference features. It is unclear if his laptop or my iMac will be the primary communication device. First security concern is about screen sharing and remote desktop control - and other things I haven't heard about! Is my computer data at any level of risk during (or after) a Skype call or Webinar session from any of the participants? What can be done about it? Second security concern is the demonstrator connecting his laptop to my network. And by extension, connection of my friends Wi-Fi devices too. Can this be done safely and easily, or must I change my complete computer-modem-router password system to the ISP and mail servers immediately after the demonstration? A possible solution may be to buy one of those USB data thingys that will give internet access to the demonstrator's (Windows?) laptop and allow a few GB of data transfer. Feasible? Do these devices also permit Wi-Fi/Airport networking? I have a spare Airport Express that could be used to create a temporary Hotspot. I have been a very occasional user of Skype and have ver 5.0.0 installed (they now offer ver 5.5.0). It seems that I may have to purchase a monthly Skype Premium plan to be able to have group video calls. Their website shows this option at XX Euros per month, but presumably the service is available in Australia. Re: Skype
Hi Mac, within Skype itself you must also click on the little picture of a video camera that is on the bottom of the Skype window when you have it open. Windows uses have the same button, so it's nothing to do with having a Mac, as you already know. So if you have preferences set correctly as per Ronni's email, and have the video button clicked in Skype, it will work. Re: skype interferes
Hi James, Have a look at your 'Crash Log' might give you indication of what is causing the crash. I'm not near my computer at the moment but a couple of suggestions you could try: 1. Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility. 2.Quit Skype, go to folder User/Library/Preferences, delete the file .com.skype.skype.plist and then re-launch Skype. 3. Quit Skype, go to folder User/Library/Application Support/Skype, delete the file shared.xml and then re-launch Skype. 4. Quit Skype, delete the folder User/Library/Application Support/Skype and then re-launch Skype. Re: Skype 5.3 keeps quitting
Thanks Ronni. That one I've tried. EVen tried twice, ie. reinstalled 5.3, then when that didn't work installed 5.4 beta over the top of 5.3. With all of that failing, 2.8 is the bandaid measure. Maybe I'll try a fresh install AFTER removing the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Skype, see if it makes a difference, and if so, introduce the folders and files within ~/Library/Application Support/Skype one by one, see if I can narrow down to an offender. Re: Skype 5.3 keeps quitting
Hi Steven, Generally I would suggest as Adrian to uninstall any Application use AppZapper , AppCleaner, or similar, but perhaps in your circumstance here, where you want to uninstall Skype but make sure you keep your contacts & chat histories, and then re-install Skype. A) Backup your Skype files first to a safe place (perhaps Desktop) Skype also stores chat histories and contacts locally on your computer. Skype for Mac OS X stores contact list files and call records in ~/Library/Application Support/Skype. You back up all files and directories beneath it. You could ‘Option-Drag’ the folder/files to your Desktop. 1. Then Open Applications and Drag your copy of Skype to the trash. Note: I don’t think then that the files above would be deleted, only the Application, BUT, you have backed them up to your Desktop just in case ;-) 3. Re-Install Skype Check in ~/Library/Application Support/Skype that the above files are there and that Skype works. If you find you need to restore your contacts and data, simply copy the files back to the directory mentioned above. I have never done this, so I take absolutely no responsibility. Good afternoon Steve, I have found the best way to solve this is to uninstall it (I use CleanApp for this,) download it and reinstall it from scratch. Skype 5.3 keeps quitting
After working just fine since the version was released, Skype 5.3 suddenly starting quitting on me, and failing to relaunch (quits each time it tries to launch) on 10.7.1. I've repaired preferences, restarted Mac, to no avail. Found one suggested remedy on the web, being to trash ~Library > Application Support > Skype > shared.xml then relaunch Skype, but that doesn't work. Downloaded 5.4 beta in case that solved the problem - nope. Another suggestion was to revert to an older version of Skype, so I've done that for now, going back in time to 2.8. This older version launches without quitting at least, but hardly a good solution. A clue may be that I was trying to launch Fetch 5.6 around the same time, and Fetch wasn't launching properly either. That problem solved with a reboot of the Mac. Re: How to remove a person from a Skype group conversation ?
Hi Ronni I could do delete the contact from my main contacts list ... whether that also removes the contact from the group discussion I'm not sure. Intuitively you'd expect so. However it's not what I want to achieve, and plus knowing how to do delete someone from a discussion will be handy to know for ongoing reference. As it turns out, there's now another person in the group discussion who I need to delete, but I don't want to remove from my contact list altogether. You can "add people" to the discussion (termed conversation by Skype) no problem, there's a little pop up window which you can activate, but you just can't delete them unless they've typed something, which then gives you this 'kick' option. But not too good if you have to say "Ronni, can you please type something so that I can kick you out". Hoping for a solution in the next Skype release, unless of course someone works it out in the meantime. Re: How to remove a person from a Skype group conversation ?
Thanks Ronni. A search on some of the text reveals you probably got it for this page. It doesn't seem to solve my problem though, but I suspect it may be relevant to verbal conversations. My problem involves text based chat for a group (my fault, didn't clarify that in my original question). I've now worked out that you can right click the name of someone who's contributed to the chat, and "kick" them, which seems to kick them out of that chat. However if a person is a member of the group discussion, but hasn't contributed, there doesn't seem to be a way of removing them. At the top of the Skype window for the group chat, each members name appears as a button, but no 'kick' or other removal option appears. An easy solution might be to ask the person to type something, so creating their name in the chat window, which can then be 'kicked', however the problem is that the person we want to remove, it's an old Skype name which she no longer uses, and has long since forgotten the password. I guess we'll just leave her there - I suspect it must be just a bug in the latest version of Skype. We could dispense with the existing conversation altogether, and start another, but then I presume we lose all the chat history. How to remove a person from a Skype group conversation ?
Can anyone tell me how to remove a person from a particular group conversation in Skype 5.0.0.7994 ? There is a drop down menu for each person which allows Call, Send Instant Message, or Show Profile. I can't seem to drag these people off the screen or out of the conversation. Re: Skype start up
Hi Chris, > I assume that I need to re-install Skype when I want to start using it? I > havnt done so yet but look forward to it as many more friends are now using > it. No, not at all. What you have done is simply turn it off from starting up automatically when you start your computer; as Ronni has described. It's handy to know where to go to turn these things off if you need to as some stage. Into the future if you want to use Skype at any stage, simply go to the Applications Folder and double click on Skype. Then you log in, and away you go. Or leave it in your Dock and access it there (right click on Skype icon in the dock when Skype is running. Select Options and Keep in Dock). Another way to avoid getting the log in screen at the start would be to run Skype, and log in. Then go to the Dock, right click on the Skype icon and select Options: Open at Login. Then go to System Preferences: Accounts: Login Items and instead of deleting Skype from the list this time, you would tick the box next to it, which would hide the app once it has started up. Plenty of options here without reinstalling. Re: How to access Skype password in Keychain ?
Hi Steven, Skype does not store password directly. Instead it stores the encrypted hash of the password! "The Skype server has a private key, and distributes that key's public counterpart with every copy of the software. As part of user registration, the user selects a desired username and password. Skype locally generates public and private keys. The private key and a hash of the password are stored as securely as possible on the user's computer (in Keychain). Then a 256-bit AES-encrypted session is established with the Skype server. The client creates a session key using its random number generator. The Skype server verifies that the selected username is unique and that follows Skype's naming rules. The server stores the username and a hash of the hash of the user's password [H(H(P))] in its database. The server now forms and signs an identity certificate for the username that binds the username, its verification key and the key identifier" Sent from Ronni's iPad On 28/12/2010, at 11:52 PM, Steven Knowles wrote: > Thanks Ronni. Re: How to access Skype password in Keychain ?
Thanks Ronni. Unfortunately the Skype account in question falls into the first category, ie. never paid for any Skype feature. I have contacted Skype, but no joy, Skype quoting 'privacy reasons'. My argument was that if a user could change the Skype profile email address to a current email address it must mean that the person changing the profile email address has the Skype password, hence emailing the reset password details to the profile email address shouldn't be a problem, a point which Skype acknowledged but it couldn't help due to 'privacy reasons'. Basically a scripted answer which doesn't hold water. Based on the limited articles I've found on the web, it seems that Keychain Access doesn't actually store the password itself, it stores some kind of code which verifies the user to Skype, and then allows the log in to proceed. Something like that anyway. For any other Skype users out there, consider manually typing your Skype password into the 'Comments' section of the account in Keychain Access. Thanks for the suggestion Robert, however the problem with going down Skype's 'forgot password' route is it send the new password details to the 'registered' email address, which is an old email address, no longer accessible, for this particular Skype account. I can't change the registered email address without knowing the existing password. Obviously the Skype application on the Mac knows the password because it logs in whenever Skype launches. Re: Skype iPhone
I use a number of SIP and VOIP type products on my iPhone and all of them are found wanting with regard voice quality and delay in particular on 3G. I'd hoped to be able to call mobile to mobile via SIP and 3G. Using a SIP or VOIP client over 3G is not up to standard yet in my experience. It is very cheap though, so if you're calling a friend that can put up with delay and tedious 'can you hear me?', then it's passable. Using them via wifi is better, but I've found the best way to use these services is straight from the desktop, or a dedicated VOIP device. My ISP is Bigpond cable My phone provider is Optus. iPhone is a 3G running OS 4.2. An iPhone 4 'may' be better, but I suspect it is more to do with the network than the phone. David, I've found Skype's Unlimited World together with a Skype online number fairly hard to beat at about AUD 200 for the year. Works very well from my iPhone. It'd be nicer if calls to Australian mobile numbers was included in the price. There are many, many software choices for the MAC, but you don’t need to pay extra for recording software on a MAC, because it is a feature of GarageBand, which comes loaded with your computer. Another thing you can do if you have a MAC is buy a Skype plug-in called Call Recorder for Skype.) Procedure: 1) Dial your voice mail or answering machine number from your VoIP service. (In Skype, you look for “Call Phones” to find the initial dialer to dial your voicemail number. Then you click on the little icon called “Dial Pad” to get another dial where you will be able to key-in your password.) (It’s not labeled as “dial pad” but if you hover your mouse over the little icons, you will see the right one.) 2) Begin recording using the phone recording software. Use the “Wave Out Mix” recording source setting. (Make sure any microphones connected to your computer are turned off or temporarily deactivated via the control panel on your computer.) This would be usb or audio inputted mic, headset, or webcam. Otherwise, you will inadvertantly add to the sound with your room noise and mouse clicks and coughing, etc.) 3) Save file as .wav, .mp3, or .aif so you can use as needed. /End Quote: You might find something else here: <https://support.skype.com/faq/FA10791/How-does-voicemail-work-on-a-Mac> Cheers, Ronni 17" MacBook Pro Intel Core i7 2.66GHz / 8GB / 1067 MHz DDR3 / 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200rpm OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard Windows 7 Ultimate (under sufferance) -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml> Guidelines - <http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml> Unsubscribe - <mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au>

Re: Skype
Hi Bill & Neil, Bill, check you only have one version of Skype on your computer, and it is in "Applications". The current version is 2.8.0.851, you can download it from here: <http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/> Make sure Skype is not Open (Active) whenever you install a new version of Skype. Bill & Neil, Skype does not store password directly. The server now forms and signs an identity certificate for the username that binds the username, its verification key and the key identifier". "You can optionally set Skype to remember your Skype Name and Password on this computer. This feature is convenient but should only be used in circumstances where you control access to the computer. Never use this option on a public computer or one for which you cannot monitor use. You can change this setting at any time from the Skype program by going to the “Skype” menu and selecting “Preferences”.
