Re: [WAMUG] Any fix for a faulty Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad?
Hi Brian, I know the Apple USB Keyboard and they are such a favourite. I use the same and love this model. Sounds like there is nothing wrong with the USB socket on your iMac if it’s servicing the KB without the Numeric Keypad so I like Peter’s idea of giving the suspect KB a try on another device. What bothers me is the co-incidence of it not working after the disconnect and I too wonder what may have gone wrong. I appreciate the built-in hub is still functional which suggests the fault with the actual keyboard is internal. I wonder if and only as a last-resort, a gentle drop onto one of the KB’s edges will re-seat an internal connector and let the KB live again? Most on-line threads suggest this model keyboard is not repairable, at-least not economically but let’s see what the Group can suggest. BTW, would your iMac be an Intel model or one with M1/M2? Probably the Intel if it’s “way out of warranty”. I ask only because my same model KB does play up with my M2 Mac Mini requiring an unplugging and re-plug after the Mac goes to sleep. Happens with other USB KB’s so I’m hoping an OS update with fix this annoying problem before I wear out my USB socket. Good luck with it but it does sound like it’s time for another KB. Cheers, Loz. Re: [WAMUG] Any fix for a faulty Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad?
Hi Brian, It is worth plugging the keyboard into another computer with a USB port to test it. Even a Windows computer or a Macbook if you or someone you know has one. That would test the working function of the keyboard. Is it possible by coincidence the batteries in the keyboard need replacing - if it has batteries even though USB connected. I'm not sure how to disassociate the device from your iMac to restart the association again as though it were a new keyboard. Hopefully someone else here knows how to do that. Hi Alan, thanks for your reply, it got me thinking and it was the floating keyboard which I have now got the keyboard sitting at the bottom of screen and now all sorted. In experimenting with this I accidentally also got to understand the slide typing feature which I have used for years with the Swype third party app on iPhone. [WAMUG} IOS Mail keyboard masking content
HI folks, I have a problem with a family members iPad. It’s an iPad 3 and has the latest iOS 14.3. It has just the stock standard iOS keyboard (no third party keyboards installed) and there is an issue she is having with the typing of newly started emails when they’re quite long (more than a half screen (either Portrait or Landscape)). The body of the text continues downward line by line as it is typed BEHIND the keyboard and she is unable to drag the body of text up the screen so that the typed text is visible. It can be part dragged up, but when finger is removed from screen, it bounces back down behind the keyboard. This does not happen on my own iPad Air or iPhone. It only happens with newly initiated emails on her iPad - not Replies or Forwarding emails. I’ve looked at corresponding settings between this iPad 3 and other iPad devices with no apparent differences. Does anyone else have this phenomenon occur or know what else I can try to resolve it? Hello Michael I don’t know how the keys come off the laptop keypads, but I suspect that something in the switching behind the keys has gone awry. Whether the cats biscuits have worked their way there, or a hair for example is triggering a false signal, is unknown until it’s pulled apart. I understand keys are aligned in groups, so edc and ik, are together. If they play up too then you have real keyboard problem That is of course that you still have the correct keyboard selected in preferences and there is no fleshware issue related to phat fingers or the shakes from no coffee. Re: Keyboard
Back in the day it wasn’t uncommon to put them in the dishwasher. The “Day” was when the keyboard was the Apple Extended Keyboard II (ADB). SO, if you’re game here are some basic instructions. Make sure you've got a spare keyboard. You must wait at least a week (7 days) before the keyboard can be used again after it's been washed, therefore unless you do not plan on using your computer for a week you'll need a spare. Do not use any dish soap. If your dishwasher has multiple settings, make sure it's a rinse only. Do not use a heavy wash, pots, and pan setting, or any heated drying settings. Any extensive heat will destroy the keyboard. Wash the keyboard on the top rack only. Do not put anything else in the dishwasher except the keyboard. Only try this if your computer keyboard is plastic. If you want a more extensive clean under the keys remove each of the keys and wash just the keyboard. After the keyboard has been washed, shake it to allow excessive water to drain out. Then tip the keyboard upside down so it is laying on the keys, and let the keyboard dry for seven days. > On 10 Jan 2018, at 2:12 pm, Ronda Brown <ro...@mac.com> wrote: > > Hi Tim... disconnect the keyboard from the iMac first ;-) > > Ronni Brown’s iPad Pro 12.9-inch 256GB > > > On 10 Jan 2018, at 12:54 pm, Tim Law <t...@peoplehelp.com.au > <mailto:t...@peoplehelp.com.au>> wrote: > >> I’ve just gone through this interesting exercise with a wired Apple keyboard >> >> First, take a picture of the keyboard so you can refer to it when you’re >> replacing the keys. Re: Keyboard
I’ve just gone through this interesting exercise with a wired Apple keyboard First, take a picture of the keyboard so you can refer to it when you’re replacing the keys. And also so you can proudly reflect on your cleaning prowess. The safest thing is to not wipe the keys just yet, simply flick them out one by one. Once the first comes out you’ll figure out the right force and angle, but a small finger placed under the edge of an exposed key and flicked up to release the clip is the best action I can describe. You may need a spodger to get the first one, a plastic stick. Once all the keys are off, they can be washed in a bowl of cleaning liquid and water, rinsed and dried The exposed base can be wiped clean and the various biscuits you’ll deny ever eating, must have been the cat, can be cleaned up. Then it’s a matter of clicking the clean dry keys back in place, using the photo as a guide. I used an overly damp wipe to start with and found excess liquid has seeped into the electronic components so the keyboard failed. This led me to dismantling it entirely and drying the three layers of printed circuit that perform the switching function of the keyboard. There are little soft plastic cones that give the soft touch we enjoy. They fall onto the floor and hide behind chair legs, so some agility may be required to rescue them. Rest assured They don’t fall out unless you dismantle the electronics. Once resembled twice, I first put the cones in the wrong way, my keyboard is clean and functional and has passed the most stringent assessment of my wife. I hope this helps Tim Sent from Tim's iPhone > On 10 Jan 2018, at 11:46 am, Severin Crisp <sevcr...@westnet.com.au> wrote: > > My iMac keyboard is disgracefully dirty and I find it very difficult to keep > it clean. Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard Battery Level Permanently 100 percent
A few days ago the Bluetooth devices battery level indicators (for Apple mouse and keyboard) suddenly changed to show 100 percent. Late 2009 iMac; OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks. I changed the Magic Mouse batteries for some old ones. Still 100 percent. Did Restart then SMC reset. No Change. Precursor to the problem - neither keyboard nor mouse would wake the iMac from sleep - I had to use the Power button.Bluetooth “wake” function has worked since. By the way, I checked “About This Mac” to get the OS X version, but I was sure I had installed an update (10.9.6) fairly recently. Fwd: Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard Battery Level Permanently 100 percent
An update to the problem - - I installed the Dashboard widget "Mighty Monitor" which shows the same battery levels as the Terminal ioreg command. Hasn't fixed the real problem, but it does help in monitoring battery life. Next step - get the widget on to the desktop! Hi Blitto, Check In System Preferences - sound - output is set to internal speakers. If that isn't the problem Reset PRAM and NVRAM Shut down your Mac Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. Turn on the computer. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears and before the chime sound. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for three times. Release the keys. Re: Can't Wake Mac from USB Keyboard
Hi Ronni Thanks for your response. Any key (or mouse click) did not wake the Mac. But problem probably solved - I'll go through another auto-sleep cycle to prove it. The keyboard is from the people who brought us the operating system whereby you need to press the Start icon to close down the PC. It is obvious, isn't it, that I should press the Sleep button on the keyboard to wake the computer. Re: Wireless keyboard wont connect anymore
Hi Matt If it's not showing up in System Preferences then sounds like the Bluetooth module isn't getting recognised. You can double check it if you go to Apple menu - About this Mac. Click on More Info Under Hardware then Bluetooth, if it says the say thing No Bluetooth Hardware Found then it means it's not being seen by the computer. Could be it's either come loose a little (best case scenario) or something has happened to it hardware wise (Worst case scenario). You can also try a PRAM reset and a PMU reset. More info here:- http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4439813 Let us know how you go. Re: Wireless keyboard wont connect anymore
Yes, sorry about not reading your email properly Matt. I had just arrived back in my office and rushed an email off to you. I've been out again and only now returned ;-( If the bluetooth hardware is not being seen on your PowerBook. Do as Daniel suggested: Firstly try A PRAM reset and if that doesn't help a PMU reset. If neither of these do the trick, it would need to be seen by Daniel as the Bluetooth Module could be loose or not connected. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM Shut down the computer. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4. Turn on the computer. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time. Release the keys. Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models. Resetting PMU on PowerBook or iBook computers In some troubleshooting situations, if resetting PRAM does not resolve an issue, resetting the PMU may be the next appropriate step. For information on when this is appropriate and for instructions on how to reset the PMU in your PowerBook computer, see Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU). Re: Wireless keyboard wont connect anymore
Ronni and Daniel, Thanks. I worked my way through everything and finally it worked on the PMU reset. Now everything is working fine but...just an observation When I looked for the Bluetooth Icon in the Internet Network section of the System Preferences window I could not find it so at first I thought it had not worked. boo hoo. But I noticed a change in the shape of the window of the Hardware Section which had grown to two lines. Why? Because Bluetooth is now sitting at the front of it! (PowerBook 1GHz G4 10.5.8). Then I compared it with the iMac (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 10.6.4) with Bluetooth in System Preferences sitting in Internet and Wireless. Why is it so? Good job I looked, thanks for the help guys, most appreciated, have a great weekend. Matt On 05/11/2010, at 5:08 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Yes, sorry about not reading your email properly Matt. Hi Matt, Yep, Daniel has answered your query. I couldn't help but smile at your why is it so. It brought back memories of Why is it so? - the ground-breaking TV series with the enigmatic Professor Julius Sumner Miller - ran on the ABC from 1963 to 1986. Professor Miller's infectious enthusiasm for physics delighted, educated and entertained generations of Australians, most of whom have at some point asked each other 'Why is it so?' in the characteristic Julius Sumner Miller voice. Hi Stuart, can you be more specific as to which functions on your extended keyboard aren't working? I ask this because some are software specific and others are OS dependent. Also is it an Apple extended keyboard or a third party one? If it is an Apple one then you definitely don't need any extra software. If it is a third party one you probably don't need extra software unless it is a special keyboard that has functions like multimedia inputs etc. Regards, Eugene -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au inline: (null) 4.tiff On 04/11/2010, at 2:01 PM, Stuart Breden wrote: My latest Intel iMac comes with the wireless keyboard and mouth. Here are two excellent articles on Apple keyboard mappings for Windows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Keyboard http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1216 On a Windows machine you toggle the numeric keyboard on and off with the Numlock Key on the key pad itself. Apple has never bothered with this nonsense, but for some reason Windows has persisted with it. The Numlock equivalent on a Mac keyboard is the Clear key. It's in the same position as the Numlock key on most non-Apple keyboards. In the most recent versions of the Apple keyboard the key is simply labelled Clear, but in older versions it additionally carries the sub-label Numlock. Check your VMWare Fusion documentation for any variations on this. For example, Parallels apparently uses Shift+Clear. OK - problem solved. Whilst it was obvious the keyboard could only be connected to one computer at a time, it would also seem that the keyboard can only be paired with one computer at a time. Disconnecting the bluetooth keyboard from the 27 was not enough, I had to remove it from the bluetooth list on the 27 and then the keyboard became discoverable and connection with the 24 went as normal. FYI removing from the list was just selecting it in the Bluetooth prefs pane and hitting the - button. Cheers Neil (who learns something new everyday!) -- Neil R. So... I was just thinking - if the keyboard is paired with a computer and you no longer have access to the computer to delete the pairing (computer broken/stolen or you just took the keyboard on hols with your laptop but forgot to cut it loose from your desktop first) - is there any way to reset the keyboard to remove the pairing and initiate discoverable mode? Bluetooth keyboard - how to swap computers
Hi All, I've got an annoying little problem at present - I'm sure the solution is simple - but its eluding me :( I got one of the new wireless keyboards with my new 27 i7 iMac - no problems there, all working fine. However, since I do a lot of spreadsheet work and I am used to having a numbers keypad, I have gone back to using a wired keyboard (the one from my previous 24 iMac) - again no problems, all working fine. Today I had call to fire up the old 24 iMac - but the keyboard is plugged into the back of the new machine - so I thought I'd just use the wireless keyboard - and that's where my problems start. Bluetooth is working fine on the 24 iMac (wireless mighty mouse connected and working) but for the life of me I can't connect to the wireless keyboard - it just can't find it (I borrowed another USB keyboard while I tried to sort it out). At first, I thought I'd found the problem - when I switched on the wireless keyboard, it connected automatically to the new 27 iMac (which it had been originally set-up to work with) - so I know the keyboard is OK but thought that, being connected to the 27, it wasn't available to any other computer - so I disconnected the keyboard from the 27 (from the bluetooth menu) and tried again to connect from the 24 - but no joy. I must admit, I don't understand the whole on/off sleep/wake green light set-up on these keyboards. When I press the on/off switch, the green light always comes on for a few seconds and then goes out - so I even tried pressing the switch again while the 24 was looking for a keyboard to connect to - however this just reconnected the keyboard to the 27! To prevent the 27 getting in first I even tried switching the 27 off (after disconnecting the keyboard) and trying again from the 24 - no joy. So, the situation seems to be: The keyboard works fine (with the 27 iMac) Bluetooth works fine on the 24 The 24 cannot see the keyboard I have never had problems moving wireless mice from one computer to another ( back again) - why is the keyboard different. The 27 is running 10.6.3 and the 24 is currently running 10.5.8 - could that be relevant - though Apple says it's perfect for ANY Bluetooth-enabled Mac (running 10.5.8 or later). Do I have to unpair the 27 and keyboard somehow? (never had to for a mouse). Like I say, the solution is probably simple - anyone got it?? Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Re: Keyboard cleaning
G'day Severin. Just to add my two cents worth. A couple of years ago; before I became a convert; I was trying to find out how to remove the keys from my keyboard attached to my old PC. I was surprised how many people on the net had actually put their keyboards in the dishwasher. It was pretty much agreed that because they were basically solid state with no wires it was safe as long as they were dried properly. Most people, like Peter left their keyboards for about three days to really dry. From memory, the other point was not to use hot water. I'm my own dishwasher so I didn't try it. Also didn't want to be without a keyboard for 3 days so just removed each key and cleaned everything bit by bit with rubbing alcohol - it was all plastic. My only problem with the Apple keyboard (perhaps Peter or someone else can comment on this) is that it has the usb cable permanently attached and I don't know how that would go in a dishwasher. I would imagine the wireless ones would be fine. The other thing about this post is that now I have taken a closer look at my own keyboard - it's starting to look a little grubby. Rats! Re: Keyboard cleaning
Hi all I always like this Keyboard cleaning thread when it comes up. As an other option (once the keyboard is clean,...) look at getting something like the iSkin range of Keyboard covers. I use them on all the keyboards I have here (and laptops too). Although they take a little to get used to them, I love them now. They are a sort of plastic/rubber cover that goes over the keyboard. It protects it from dirt and dust (and even the odd water spill), and the new ones have a microban feature. And they are washable. So it means once it's on the keyboard, you never have to worry about the Keyboard ever again! (And I've got some keyboards going on 5+ years old that look as new as they day they came out of the packet (well pretty close to it)). When the cover gets dirty, you just take it off, wash it and then put it back on again. (They also do covers for iPhones and iPods as well as laptops, and including the Apple Wireless Keyboard). You can see the whole range here:- http://www.tryandbyte.com.au/cgi-bin/page.pl?page=432title=iSkin For the Aluminium Wireless keyboard:- http://tinyurl.com/ygj3yxf Apple Aluminium Keyboard:- http://tinyurl.com/yjedw8x Previous white Apple Keyboard (And wireless keyboard) http://tinyurl.com/yhr4woe For MacBook, MacBookPro and MacBook Air http://tinyurl.com/y8a45wr Generally retail for about $45-$55, so not overly cheap, but if you consider you can wash them and replacement cost of a keyboard, they work out quite a good cost. (Plus factor in time taken to have to clean the keyboard!!) If anyone is interested, or wants more info, feel free to contact me off list. If enough people want them, I can see if I can get a bulk discount for a WAMUG purchase. Just something else to consider as well.
