It all seems very shaky ground to be honest, but I'm driven by the
fact that I know they have no backups.

I think your best bet is to take this up with an
attorney. Laws vary state to state. What one

told them is so - may not be true where you're
at. This is a hard lesson but one that hopefully
you'll learn to never work w/o a contract again.
I learned the hard way myself and lost a bundle.
Collection agency never did collect but then
didn't figure they would. You could try a
collection agency - even if you don't get your
money - you have the satisfaction that eventually
it will hit their credit report and you didn't do
anything dirty, underhanded or illegal to make it
happen. May sound trite but after you do it - it
feels good even if it doesn't fill your wallet.

Nobody will know but you if the hardware never gets installed anywhere. A HD
could be put in a $30 external USB case, which you could plug into a USB
port, a great, convenient way to back up.

I have a brand new 1T external backup drive still

Windows OS on that instead of on the C Drive on
the iMac? I'll be using VM Fusion for the

[wdvltalk] OT: where to purchase a full version of XP Media Edition?

2008-03-20 Thread PBC Web Design
Hi,

I'm going to be ordering a Mac - soon I hope! But
not before I get my hands on a legal full version
copy of WinXP preferably the Media Edition so I
can run it in VM Fusion on the Mac. I have only
so far been able to locate OEM and for system
builders versions and upgrades. Does anyone know
where I can purchase a legal copy? I can't even find it on the MS site!

Ok, thanks much Felix. I don't know anything

built into my HP - has 4 slots. One is supposed
to be for SD cards but I could never get a card
to go into it. Card goes in fine to my printer

identical. So, I don't know what the problem is
there. This may sound like a stupid question but
wouldn't an internal card on a Mac not qualify as a Windows hardware thing?

[wdvltalk] OT: is this a good price on a hard drive?

Hi there,

My daughter's laptop's hard drive is shot it
looks like. Missing Operating System is all I
can get it to do. Have tried inserting the
recovery cd and a Win98SE cd - same message. I
opened it up and pulled the drive and reseated it
twice - just in case it had come loose. No
luck. I'm wondering if this is a good price and
place to purchase her a new drive:

http://www.drivesolutions.com/cgi-bin/shop/ug2store.cgi?command=listitemskind=tolpos=0type=itemiditemid=tol816

$55 for the 30GB drive. Never had to buy one
before so I don't have a clue. Thanks for your help.

to press a key at the appropriate time to boot from CD, or you may need
to enter the BIOS setup utility and configure it to boot from the CD

No, I'm not absolutely positive but I thought
that's what it meant. I tried F8 to try to get

this was caused by a virus. Any idea what key

It sounds to me like your zip program spanned the
files when zipping. Try putting them all in one
folder and unzipping them into that folder. That
should give you all your files and then you should be able to install.

Hi Ross,

[wdvltalk] OT: Ram question

2007-09-16 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading my ram. I currently
have 2G's running WinXP Home and my system will
take up to 4G's. I'm told WinXP only reads up to
3G. I had a computer temporarily where 4G's was
installed (I added ram at purchase but the
computer was later returned) and I had problems
which were thought to be due to the additional
stick of ram that WinXP could not read.

I remember reading somewhere that it's better to
have say 4 single 1G's installed vs two 2G's and
this was for performance reasons. For some reason
the computer was supposed to function
better/faster using what I call singles vs
doubles. I would only go to 3G's since WinXP
can't read 4. I don't remember the particulars
but something about the singles ones was supposed
to make for better performance. I currently have
2 open slots. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Thank you :)

Re: [wdvltalk] Site Check Please

2007-08-21 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi Peter,

Well, my first look says wa to busy
looking. I think maybe there's to much of the
same look all over. Perhaps if you break it up a
little bit by saying putting a bg color in the
right or left cells? I don't think I'd go w/red
but maybe - I'd have to play w/it. Just seems to
need some breaking up for the visual. The grey
on this page might do it:
http://healthandsafetyformicrofirms.com/index.php?main_page=indexcPath=4
or a lighter grey.

I think I'd also change the light pink to very
light grey - the pink is a little hard on my eyes
anyway and since this is not strictly a female
site - I'd try to get a more uni-sex color combo going.

I like the logo :)

My feeling when I view it is governmental so if
that's what you're shooting for then in my opinion you hit the mark.

Question, is this all set in a Zencart template or is the cart separate?

Looks like a huge undertaking - I wish you the best of luck!

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate
all the suggestions but that's more work than I
am up for. I'm very happy to have tv on my main
system and so that's what I'll stick with at
least for now. I don't have to watch what the
hubby is watching, LOL! I also don't have to get
up early anymore to watch certain shows - I can
just watch them after I wake up normal time :)
Works for me, I don't absolutely have to have the extras.

As for the wide screen monitors - yup, very
cool! I'm now running duo monitors, one 22 wide
screen and one 19 so I just put the tv on the
19 to my right and can watch as I like while working on the left.

Now about that bigger desk ... LOL!

[wdvltalk] OT multiple instances in Device Mgr

2007-08-01 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

Running WinXP and with my usb troubles I just
went to the Device Mgr and found what looks to me
like duplicate instances regarding drivers.

Here's what I'm seeing:

In IEEE 128.4 compatible printers:

Officejet 6300 (DOT4PRINT)
Officejet 6300 Series (DOT4PRT)

Not quite identical but I only have one Officejet 6300 printer hooked up

Then in IEEE 128.4 devices I have:
Officejet 6300 Series (DOT4)

In Imaging devices I have:

HP Officejet 6300

In Monitors I have 3 instances of Default
Monitor and 2 instances of Plug and Play
Monitor and I only have two monitors hooked up.

I have a number of entries in Universal Serial Bus controllers

In Human Interface Devices I have 2 instances of
HID-compliant consumer control device and

HID-compliant device
Logitech Cordless USB keyboard
Logitech Cordless USB Mouse Enhanced Keys

My Officejet is also showing up under Disk
drives as HP Officejet 6310 USB Device and
I'm supposed to have one hd in the puter and one
external that I can't get the system to recognize.

Does there seem to be a few extra things in this
setup or not? I'm thinking I should at the very
least have just two entries in the Monitors
list. Do I delete all but one of each? If I do, am I going to lose my screen?

If you suspect that the problem only occurs when the hub is plugged in,
unplug everything from the hub, and see if it boots. If it does, it's
(probably) not the hub, but one of the things plugged in to it - plug
them back in one by one, rebooting each time, until you find the culprit.

If it won't boot with the hub plugged in (but nothing else plugged in to
the hub) but will boot with the hub unplugged, then it sounds like the
hub has gone bad.

Is it a powered hub? Double check that it's getting power from its
power adaptor if so... just in case it's not, and it's causing it to
draw excessive power via the PC's USB port.

Cheers

[wdvltalk] OT: usb hub issues

2007-07-31 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

I'll try to make this short and yet give enough
info to hopefully get some answers.

Sunday I moved to dual monitors and also added tv
to my WinXP setup (really cool to be able to
watch a little tv while working!) My external
backup is plugged into a usb hub along with a few
other things (would take awhile to figure out
what). I wound up with a problem on a reboot and
could not get into windows. Boot stopped at the
initial HP opening screen. Ten hours of tech
support nightmare later, I finally was able to
get into Windows. They had me unplug some stuff
including the computer power cable then hold in
the on/off button for 30 seconds, plug the power
back in and I was thing in windows. What is
happening now is that anytime I have this usb hub
plugged in I wind up not being able to get into windows.

The tv thing is just a coax cable plugged into
the vid card and a splitter which then plugs into
the cable router. I'm thinking that's not the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is the usb hub
perhaps bad? Or the actual usb cable that plugs
into the computer from the hub? I'd like to nail
down some potential fixes before running all over
the place without direction. Thanks!

hub. If not, disconnect everything from the hub and see if that works.
Then you may want to look at the hub and cable.

[wdvltalk] OT: icons not showing in tray

2007-06-06 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

My Mom has a weird thing going on with her XP
computer. Suddenly for an unknown reason all the
icons in her try have disappeared. I've hunted
and hunted to find a fix. When you go into the
Task Bar Properties under Notification Area to
checkmark to show the clock and Hide Inactive
Icons the click checkbox is available but the
Hide Icons is unchecked *and* greyed out. Any ideas how to fix?

Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is the
color combo. This does not say Dad to me -
it's pastel-y in nature which screams female to
me. Rounded would make it more femmie in my
opinion. Maybe a deep dark manly purple and then
white instead of yellow? Or perhaps even bolder
- black and purple? I would go to
www.istockphoto.com and hunt down some Dad type
images to use on the site. The yellow banded
thingy reminds me of a construction site - manly? Yes, but not Dad-ly.

Hello, Good Evening and Welcome in my opinion
helps to make it more home-made looking so I'd do
away w/that. It's also kind of a lng opening
statement. Using Welcome to is not only
over-used but in the search engine world it's
recommended to not use. More important that you have relevant content.

Just an aside, I've found that when I am faced
with having to do something on a site that I
either know nothing about or very little or am
not good at - I sub it out. You might want to
consider doing so if you've not already given an
estimate price to the client or if you have room to play w/the budget.

I'm viewing in Firefox and I'm seeing is that you
have appears to be some alignment issues.

Unfortunately the shopping cart doesn't have a store closed function.
Beyond the shop, it is a simple ASP site with includes, the store is in
subfolders beyond domain.com/shop/

It wouldn't be a big deal if all I had to do was modify the menu links, but
the site's got a lot of individual product links that I'd have to search and
replace on. If there was any way to cut that work down, it'd be great.

Is the store closed permanently or just temporarily and I do believe
a link to the site would be helpful to help determine this is my thought.

Re: [wdvltalk] Search Engine Optimization

2007-01-18 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi Robert,

You should remove the pages from the ftp and put
the new design in it's own folder and pw protect
it. Then the bots can't get at it.

As for getting it closer to the top of the search
engine, you are asking for a quick answer to
something that takes much time and work. There
is no pat answer, nor will a *reputable* SEO
Specialist give you an guarantee of
rankings. This is not something that happens
overnight nor is there a quick fix for it. To
many factors involved to just give you one answer
and there is no one answer anyway. No one single
thing to do. It's a combination of things that
help a site move up IF it's going to move
up. Some things we have no control over even on
a well SEO'd site - competition is one for example.

My suggestions are: either have the site SEO'd
by a reputable SEO Specialist or start studying
yourself if you want to do it yourself. There's a lot to learn.

RE: [wdvltalk] OT: convert FAT32 drive to NTFS?

Hi Deb

I'd strongly recommend you convert your drive to NTFS. There are a number of
benefits to using NTFS, such as minimising wasted space when you save
data, data encryption and file system security. FAT32 is now seriously
outdated when working with large hard drives, especially if you're running
XP or Vista. Because of the way FAT32 works you simply have no choice but to
split data up into 2GB blocks if you attempt your backup.

I'm very very surprised that a Vista ready machine from HP of all people
have formatted the drive as FAT32 - very sloppy and short-sighted in my
opinion.

You won't lose any data doing the command-line drive conversion the Genie
Soft site details.

Thanks for the info, MOU. Have further questions .. what happens
when I have to reformat the computer? I try to do that about once a
year. Will the NTFS stay in place or would I need to do it
again? Is this a very time consuming process that I need to allow
mega time for? Do you recommend I do my external hard drive as well?
What about the D drive, the one that the system stuff is on that
holds everything since you don't get a reformat cd w/the machine? Do
I do that one as well?

Yeah, you'd think if it's that much better especially w/Vista on the
horizon that this drive would have come NTFS. Your comment about
minimizing space has probably given me my answer to why my previous
computer showed a total of 18G of info on it and I put the same stuff
on this new one and I'm at 25G. I couldn't figure out why that would
happen but now I think I know.

Is there anything I need to watch out for in the process?

[wdvltalk] OT: convert FAT32 drive to NTFS?

2007-01-07 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

I am trying out a new backup program for backing up to my external
hard drive. Well, it's thrown at me that it can't back up to a FAT32
system w/o me breaking it down into 2G increments (I think NOT!). It
offers a way to convert the drive to NTFS. Do I want to do
this? It's a new machine, HP, WinXP Media supposedly ready for
Vista. I don't know what else you may need to know to advise
me. Here is the link to the info they provide:

http://www.genie-soft.com/asp/community/KnowledgeArticle.asp?KBID=113linkid=35SrcID=4

My external is also FAT32 if that matters and it's probably 2 1/2
years old or so.

This seems like something that falls under leave well enough alone
as I've had just bookoodles of computer problems all of
December. Went thru 3 new computers that failed and so far this #4
if working just fine.

Thanks much!

As for the speed differences, it is my understanding (I haven't personally

This is the only reason I can think of why you can't get an external

I got it working. I had originally tried the hot plug-in but this

[wdvltalk] OT: is i-LINK firewire for transferring data?

2006-12-28 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

My Toshiba laptop has an i-LINK firewire port. The cable is 6 pin to
4 pin and package says it's for connecting computer to camcorders,
digital cameras and mp3 players and also says connect a digital
camcorder or other FireWire device to your computer. Does anyone
know if that would include connecting to an external hard drive and
being able to transfer my data for backup purposes? I can't seem to
get the laptop to recognize the external using this cable. Could
just be the same issue I had before and just have to wait it out
until it sees the external but I'm starting to think it may be the
wrong kind of connection or cable? I have done it using a USB2
cable, but of course firewire is going to be faster so hoping to make
it work. If one can connect a dig camera and transfer photos, I
would think it would work w/data but maybe I just don't know enough.

[wdvltalk] OT: Mom's Win XP screensaver not working

2006-12-27 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

My Mom is having issues w/her screen saver not working. Computer is
about a month old and she's trying to use the default screen savers
in her Win XP Media computer. When I set it up I tested it using the
preview but we never let it just go into screen saver on it's own
when I was at their house a few days ago. Now she tells me it's not
working. It just doesn't come up. I've set all her power down
options to never and she's tried using different time frames for it
to kick in and also different screen savers. Nothing is working. I
know, this may seem like a silly problem, but Mom is in her 70's and
not puter-savvy at all. We want to make sure she's got a screen
saver in place because otherwise she's got this absent-minded habit
of thinking the puter is off when it's really on in power-down mode
so she'll turn the puter on when it's already on which of course
she's actually shutting it down without using the proper shut down
method. She doesn't want any screen burn-in so prefers a screen
saver. Any ideas? Thank you.

[wdvltalk] OT: reading an external hard drive - firewire/usb

2006-12-24 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi,

I think my computer is possessed, please I need some input. Short
version of what's happened:

External hard drive has been working fine via firewire cable hooked
up to old puter and 3 new puters (don't ask - problems w/all of
them). Came a point in time I had no desktop computer available so
hooked up the laptop to the external but via USB2. Worked fine
(slower because it was USB2 vs firewire but still worked).

Now, the external is hooked back up to the desktop via firewire and
the computer isn't seeing this K drive - it's like invisible. Have
tried both firewire ports, checked all hardware connections,
uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times still won't
see the K drive. Tried hooking up the USB cable just to see if it
would work ... here's where the possessed comes in - I plug the
USB2 cable into the back of the external - suddenly it sees the drive
as Windows Explorer pops open to the K drive! I plug the other end
of the USB cable into the computer and it disappears! How the heck
can the drive be read when the cable is only plugged into the
external and not into the computer and how the heck do I get it to
read the K drive via the firewire so I can use the software for
backing up and restoring? When I open the software to try this, it
doesn't see the drive - can only been seen via Windows Explorer it seems.

Thanks!

We are often fully booked for the evening for private parties. Please
call ahead to check seating availability. We'd hate to have you make
the trip only to find out we're hosting a private party.

I agree on all counts above. I hate getting to a place to find it's

of course that's not my or your decision to make. If they hire you

[wdvltalk] OT: video card/DVI monitor port questions

2006-12-18 Thread PBC Web Design
Hi,

I'll start w/brief info and embellish if necessary ... I'm very bad w/hardware
issues.

Got a new puter which has the original vid card in it w/256megs vid ram and a
DVI port for the monitor. Had an additional vid card put in it w/DVI port and
512megs vid ram. Both also have vga ports but am planning on using the DVI
ports.

I want the main monitor to use the new card as that will be my main screen. I
want the second monitor to use the vid card that came w/the computer.

I forgot to purchase a 2nd DVI cable for the 2nd monitor when I purchased the
computer so have to buy one. I have one DVI cable that came w/the main monitor
(Sony) that I've had about a year. The drivers for the second monitor (which is
the new one) I'm guessing must already be installed as when I connect the DVI
cable to it the picture is beautiful looks just like my old monitor which is
the main monitor. When I connect the same DVI cable to the Sony monitor the
screen quality is more like the vga quality. I'm thinking I need to install
the Sony drivers but am afraid I'll mess up the new video card. Do I need to
install the Sony drivers?

Second question - purchasing a second DVI cable ... things would be so much
easier if there was one DVI cable to purchase that works for all computers but
I go looking and YIKES there are so many selections I have no clue what to buy.
Example - one says DVI-1 (or is it DVI-I ?) and the other is a DVI-II ... then
there are some that are gold metal on the ends instead of the usual black
plastic. I can pick up a gold metal one at Walmart but it's in the aisle w/the
tv cables and not the computer monitor cables - the actual connection ends look
like the cable I have but are they the same? Can I use the tv DVI cable on the
computer? Is there any benefit to the gold metal? They have no DVI cable in the
computer area of the store only the tv cable aisle and our local Radio Shack
doesn't have any DVI cables. Those are the only 2 local stores in my area that
carry computer equipment. I found one cable online that *looks* like the one I
have now and *says* it fits all DVI monitors but because of the DVI-I and
DVI-II I'm not sure that's what I should get.

How the heck do I sort this out so I get the right cable the first time?
Thanks!

Before I did anything I would check the instructions. Some have an
auto restore feature if you want to restore an entire system. For
restoring a folder or file etc ... not an entire system, mine has a
restore built into the right click so I open the most current backup
(or whichever I want - I just mousehover to find date and time of a
file/folder) and right click the file/folder I need and click
restore. It then offers me the option to restore to the same folder
or I can select a new location to restore it to. I love my
external. It's the best thing I ever did for my puter and me and has
saved my butt a number of times. Don't forget you may need to delete
the older backups weekly, monthly or whenever it's getting full.

[wdvltalk] OT: uninstalling McAfee from a new machine

Hi,

I got a new puter and GR it came installed w/McAfee Suite
something or other. I want McAfee GONE but there is no uninstall to
be found. When I go to the Control Panel I find the option to
uninstall just this: McAfee Uninstall Wizard. I'm afraid if I
uninstall that from the Control Panel that I'll be stuck w/McAfee ...
I can't install my Zone Alarm or my Avast anti-virus until McAfee is
gone. This is a WinXP Media machine. Anyone have any experience
w/this? Your help would be appreciated.

On the other hand I am not sure why you can't use the uninstall

enough in the registry to keep nagging ;-). The wizard should
uninstall itself after its done the Macbeth bit!

And I think I installed both Zone Alarm and AVG before I even
disabled McA, switching it off every time it raised its big business deal head.

Hi Joseph,

It won't even let me install my Norton System Works w/o throwing me a
warning to uninstall the McAfee first and I'm not even going to use
the Norton AV. I just use some of the tools in the suite. It's not
an uninstall wizard in the program list or anything it's actually
listed in the Control Panel Add/Remove programs as uninstall wizard
so I'm afraid what I'd be doing is uninstalling the uninstall feature
but I can't find an uninstall w/in the program. Every time I open it
up to look it wants me to set it up.

attempt. None of the 300-plus computer users that I support can do
this, or I'd be out of a job. Also when I said 'to save you the

of me to just leave it at steps 1-3 when I had the answer on my

perhaps I would have been posing as some kind of super guru instead
of just someone who used Google to get the answer... modesty and

Thanks, Bj. You are correct in that you really do have to twist your
mind to find what you need sometimes. I thought I was searching on
the right words but as you can see, I was wrong. I also assumed just
searching in the WinXP help files on my own computer would yield me

I have been in tech support for about twenty years but frankly,
skill, knowledge, experience and training are only useful in about
5% of situations. Mainly I earn my living by switching equipment
off and back on again, and when that occasionally fails, typing
*just* the right question into Google / looking in *just* the right
place in the manual or help file... it's a rare gift, I mean a *rare* gift.

Erm, also, I must admit finding this one probably was more like the
fifty-first attempt, the first time I had to look for it...

I do appreciate the trouble you went to to find it for me.

I'm not going to mess w/this anymore. I just don't have the time and
after being totally locked out after my attempts - I'm now more on
the paranoid side of terrified of this happening again. It would
have been nice had the program that installed this given me the
option of setting it up this way - I'd have surely checked NO! It
has to be either the printer or the Wacom Pen Tab as this all
happened after that. I do remember something about MSN Messenger or
??? coming up but for the life of me can't remember what it was
now. I was just dumbfounded to have installed all of this, gone to
bed, got up - rebooted and suddenly there is was w/no warning. There
oughta be a law against software doing this but then I would imagine
they'd listen about as well as the spammers listen to the laws about
spamming and to the people who don't want it.

Apparently, this was the problem. I had not worded my searches

with this problem on and off and am tearing my hair our. Their
system keeps defaulting to their ISP email details and won't hold
those for the web! I've scanned their machine for viruses, updated
their ant-virus and firewall (and now set the machine to do it
automatically, but as they are on a dial-up that is a problem at
times) but nothing so far has worked. This is a prize example of
what should be so simple and straightforward but is in fact a nightmare.

Hi Peter,

Let me guess, they're using some version of Outlook? I have had a
few clients w/this problem myself. Maybe this will help. Outlook
sometimes does not recognize *changes* to an existing eMail account
config. I have found this process I'm about to explain cures that
problem and my clients after having done this, can then download
their mail. Keep in mind I'm not an Outlook user and never will be
from what I've seen.

Have them *delete* the existing account, close Outlook, reboot the
computer, open Outlook, go in and set up a new account for the same
eMail address. Voila, downloading then works.

I got this from a tech in Ohio who I never physically met. My client
was a sweet wonderful elderly lady who was not computer stupid. But
she could not get her eMail to download after switching to my
hosting. Instead of just leaving and going elsewhere for hosting,
she *hired* a local tech who turned out to be a peach of a peach of a
guy and he is the one that told me about this. He then promptly
passed away with no warning (only in his 30's) within a few weeks of
me having met him by phone eMail. To this day, I have a soft
spot in my heart for him.

Anyway - this process has helped several of my clients overcome the
madness of not being able to download their eMail. Hopefully, it will
help you too, Peter.

Peter - one more thing I forgot to add earlier that you might want to
try. When I upgraded my hosting acct from shared to VPS I had to
udpate all mail settings. What I mean by this is on shared my
username was username. Well on the VPS I must use my complete
eMail addy for my user name. So instead of just entering username
(no quotes) into the username field, I had to change everything over
to use my full eMail addy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, I had to
change all passwords to more secure passwords. Some people use very
simple pw's and some servers will reject them and require more secure pw's.

I apologize that I didn't think to add this earlier. This might be
the first thing they try as it's a few less steps than the other option.

[wdvltalk] OT: ridding myself of the Windows Welcome screen

2006-10-19 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi there,

A couple of weeks ago (I haven't had time to post until now) I
installed some new programs and one of them (and I have no idea which
one) is now forcing the Windows Welcome screen (WinXP) to show on
boot up. I don't want a welcome screen, nor do I want a login
screen. I always boot directly into Windows and that's what I want
back in place. When the Welcome screen comes up, it's not requiring
a login - I just click the name and it finishes booting to
Windows. But I hate this. I cannot find any options/preferences in
the programs I installed for changing this. One was a new HP printer
which I seriously doubt caused this because I've installed many a
printer and never had this happen. The other is the Wacom Pen Tablet
and associated bundled software that came w/it.

I have been into the Control Panel/User Accounts - I have one admin
account and that's the name that's showing up on the Welcome screen
so I can't delete it.

I also found something called ASP.NET Machine installed and I have no
idea where that came from or what program installed it. I have not
had reason to go into the User Accounts in months and months so this
could have been installed by anything and not necessarily a recent
install. It's showing as password protected and I know for sure I
did not set this up. If I ever need a password for it, I have no
idea what it would be.

If I were to remove the Welcome screen within the User Accounts, it's
telling me then I'll have a classic login screen complete
w/password. Don't want that.

If I go into TweakUI there are options that *are* checkmarked ( that
I didn't checkmark) under LOGON. They are:

Keep RAS connections after logoff (not checked)
Parse Aytiexec.bat at logon (checked)
Show ASPNET on Welcome Screen (checked but not by me)
Show MyLastName on Welcome Screen (checked but not by me and this
is the admin account in the User Accounts)

I don't want to do anything because I'm terrified I'll wind up
locking myself out of Windows entirely. But I want that blasted
welcome screen gone! Can this be done and if so, how? Anyone know
how to get me back the way I was before?

Thank you!

4. In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the

5. Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click

This didn't work for me. On reboot, the welcome screen showed up
behind an error msg that I could not be logged in. Clicked ok,
welcome screen went from fade to unfade and so I wound up w/2 steps
to get into Windows vs the one original one - having to click out of
the error msg and clicking the account button to enter Windows. From
there things went downhill to the point of being totally locked out
of my computer. After firing up my laptop, several googles got me
some possible fixes for getting back in which I was able to
accomplish. A system restore took me back to where I was before I
tried all of this. It's times like these I am reminded that the
money I spent on my laptop was money very well spent, LOL! Thank you
for trying, Bj.

[wdvltalk] OT - upgrading MSN Messenger forcing SP 2 upgrade

2006-10-08 Thread PBC Web Design

Hi there,

Mom and I use MSN Messenger and particularly the Remote Assistance
feature as she lives a ways from me and I do alot of puter fixing etc
for her this way so I don't have to drive over there all the
time. Well, today we were going to try a Remote and my MSN Messenger
popped up an upgrade when she tried to remote in to me. I went to do
the usual (all tooo often in my opinion) upgrade and it clicked
me over to a page to upgrade to Service Pack 2.

Seems I can't upgrade my MSN Messenger w/o upgrading the entire
system to Service Pack 2 which I refuse to do. I actually did try
once right after a reformat some time ago and it wouldn't do the
upgrade. I forget what happened but I never did get it upgraded and
to do it now is out of the question. I'll wait 'till I get a new puter.

Anyway - final point is - anyone know a workaround for this so I can
get MSN Messenger upgraded w/o going to SP2? I really HATE forced
anything! Whatever happened to this being America and us Americans
having a choice?

Hi Peter,

Might want to have a look at this one: http://jalbum.net/ - I've used it
numerous times for photos - don't know if it'll do pdf files, though.

I tried Googling convert pdf to thumbnail and did get some listings so you
might try that as well.

I agree. I learned long ago to *never* use the Welcome to line
unless the client absolutely insists on it. It's bad for SEO. It's
more important to get the topic of the site across. On top of that
Welcome to is absolutely wayy over-used and boo-ring!

I think it looks very nice except for the topper - it's hard to read.
Not clear enough text or graphic text (whichever you're using). It's
kind of garble-dy looking. The content font is a little bit smaller
than I'd like to see as well. I would make the text a bit
bigger. Being that this is a health type site - I also learned long
ago from working for a mental health professional web site, that
medical type sites should be really clean looking for best
results. So, making the text larger and spacing it out some I think
would accomplish that nicely. Just to crowded looking is my opinion.

Some kind of logo that helps get the site topic across would be nice,
but not necessarily required. But then, I'm big into logos so don't mind me!

I disagree here. I refuse to submit to DMOZ anymore. There really
isn't a reason to and you'll find if you hop on over to
www.highrankings.com Jill Whalen's boards and do some hunting you'll
find the reasons for not submitting to DMOZ. Even Jill herself says
not to bother and I do believe in one or more of the posts she may
even mention that it can be a detriment to the site.

One of my own top reasons is that about 8most ago or so I found out
that Google uses DMOZ in some fashion. Well, I wound up having a
very very very old DMOZ entry stuck in my description results after
a search for eons. Couldn't figure out where it was coming from as
it wasn't coming from my site. This one little thing affected my
rankings and try to get someone at DMOZ to change anything? Don't
hold your breath. I'm sure all the people who volunteer there are
very nice but they're also very overworked as DMOZ is all manual
labor. They just can't keep up for one thing. So, my advice is to
check out Jill's boards and do a double think before submitting there.

Can any one suggest BEST SEO TUTORIALS

My suggestion is not to use a single tutorial for SEO. There's just
to much to learn about it that cannot be covered in a single
tutorial. I've been doing it for about 4-5 years now and I still
learn new things as I go along.

I would suggest a class for one thing. They used to have one at
www.lvsonline.com but it's been awhile since I've been there so don't
know if they offer it anymore or not. Also suggest you hit the big
seo sites like www.highrankings.com and read Jill's newsletters, hit
the forum. There's also some other good places to go for seo
info: www.seochat.com , www.searchenginewatch.com It's really not
something you pick up in one sitting, it takes ongoing study, reading
alot and working it through. It takes a lot of time and dedication
to learn seo. Example, you don't just seo a site once and let it go
at that - you need to monitor it and tweak it on some kind of regular
basis. Know when to do something to a site and when to leave it
alone for awhile kind of thing. Sign up for some good
newsletters. All of the above sites offer them. Hope this helps.

My latest request is that the menu on the side not be in a box.
Because the background is a lake picture with trees and sky, part of
the menu is in the sky and the other part is over the trees. How do
I make a menu that isn't in a box that will appear on both sky and
trees and doesn't look awful?? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi Riva,

Well, first of all I don't know if you realize this but the entire
background is tiling so on my screen I have several backgrounds side
by side and on top of one another which is something I would
address. As for the menu, what about removing the box and just use
links? Or, you could do a horizontal menu so the box isn't just
floating there, but instead is at the top of the page?

What do you think would make the site look more professional? It

If you have to use the photo one possibility is making it smaller,
add an oval shape around it of a solid coordinating color. Put the
nav on the left right aligned to go around the left side of the oval
and then center it in the site page. You could also try a gradient
fade of the photo.

That's a great idea Deb. Where would the text go though?

Well, if you make the photo considerably smaller (like about half
it's current size) then you'd have room for text next to it or you
could put the text under it depending upon how much text there
is. That was just one idea, too Riva. A quickie that crossed my
mind in a flash. This photo is also pretty blurry and I think a
clear, crisp photo is in order. One thing I forgot to mention would
be to mute the photo edges so it blends rather than leaving it as a
stark photo - something to make it not just look like a photo slapped
into a page. What's there *can* be made to look much more
professional if they'll give you some rope to work with, LOL! instead
of hanging you with it.

This site definitely needs a professional touch and if these people
aren't going to listen to you my suggestion is if you continue to do
the work that you not put it in your portfolio nor put your link to
it on the bottom - at least not as the designer. If they want the
site to look unprofessional that's their business, if you want to
continue the work that's your business but YOUR BUSINESS doesn't have
to suffer because of it. Make sense?

Yes. Thank you. I guess I am just so stressed from looking at this
site and dealing with these people that I can't think straight anymore.

Suggestion then would be to take a break from it. That's what I do
and it generally helps.
