Today I found four juvenile type scoters at DeWeese Reservoir. I watched
them for a while and three of them eventually showed white wing patches
when they preened. The third was very similar to the other three but never
showed a white patch. It didn't look much like a Surf Scoter either.
The Sabine Gull continues at DeWeese Reservoir. It was there as late as
4:00 PM. I also saw a small white egret. It was on the far shore, but too
far to ID as to species

This morning in the fields north of Wetmore I counted over 100 buteos in
an area of maybe 50 acres. Most were perched on fence posts, a few were on
the ground. None were flying. They were mixed buteo species. I
identified Red-tailed, Swainson's and a Harrier. It was private property an

the open water at the east Valco Pond in Canon City. Standing on the ice
were twenty-one Gr. White-fronted Geese. Dozens of Common Goldeneyes were
on the water and hundreds of geese were standing on the ice.

showed up and proceeded to fly up and down the lake. Occasionally diving
for food. After about a half hour of continuously flying around they

Park. It was in the area of the picnic shelters that are close to the

moving thru small trees beside the road between Lake Martin and Horseshoe
Lake - next to the Duck Pond.
On Lake Martin were three Common Loons and a Red-necked Grebe. I think

Fisherman's Point. I watched it for about an hour. It mostly stayed west of

at Holcim Wetlands. I assume it was the same one that was here last
week. There were also two Green Herons here.

Sunday morning there was a singing Northern Parula at the riverwalk
parking lot at the end of Sell Ave. This morning I found it again at the same
location, zz-uping away. Both times it was in the dense cluster of
small trees at the west end of the parking lot.

Early this morning a single Common Redpoll showed up at my backyard feeder
in Canon City, among the usual sparrows, goldfinches and doves. It stayed
long enough to have its picture taken and then flew off. I haven't seen

This weekend the hackberry trees at the Riverwalk and Veteran's Park came
alive with migrants. There were numerous Yellow-rumped Warblers, Townsend
Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Also several Orange-crowned Warblers,
one Black and White Warbler and one Magnolia Warbler were seen. At
Today there were hundreds of sparrows, mostly White-crowned and Song, in
the brushy areas around the Holcim Wetlands. Highlights were a
White-throated Sparrow and a brilliantly rusty, eastern-type Fox Sparrow.

Bittern from the cattails along the shore. It flew to the center of the
marsh and disappeared. This is the first time I've seen a Least Bittern

found one at the location described in the CO Rare Bird Alert. I also
saw one at a similarly pock-marked dead ponderosa next to the creek just
west of the horseshoe building.

was with several hundred gulls clustered together on the ice at the center of
the lake. Minnequa Lake is in south Pueblo near Saint Mary-Corwin

Late this morning I flushed the Least Bittern as I was walking along the
south shore of the marsh. It disappeared into the tall cattails near the
center of the marsh. After an hour's wait it hadn't reappeared. My viewing
time of the bittern in the three trips to Holcim is about 14 seconds
Yesterday morning while I was walking around the cattail marsh at the
Holcim Wetlands, a Least Bittern flushed up from the shoreline and flew off
into
the tall cattails. I went back to the car and got my camera, but never
got another look at it.

the base of the dam at DeWeese Res. Coincidently, or maybe not, there was
one at this same spot last spring.
Also of interest at DeWeese today were a Green Heron and three Long-billed
Curlews.

Today there was a Sage Sparrow on the south side of DeWeese Reservoir at
the parking lot next to the dam. It was struting around on the ground next
to my car while I was eating lunch. I was able get some good for-the
-record pictures shooting out of the car window.
To my surprise
Colorado's other Golden-crowned Sparrow continues its winter sojourn at
Tunnel Drive in Canon City. This morning it was on the ground with several
White-crowned Sparrows next to the metal gate at the end of Tunnel Drive.
