So a major part of the xfs problem in kernel building (perhaps THE problem) is
gcc3.x. The stock 2.4.19-16mdk kernel works with xfs, however...does this
mean that the stock kernel was built with gcc-2.96 instead of the 3.x series?

I am not finding urpmi very functional nor impressive in Mandrake 9.0. In
Mandrake 8.2 it works like a charm but in 9.0 it chokes on virtually EVERY
query I make.

What kernel is used in the 9.1 beta? Is it 2.4.20? I am considering trying
that kernel to get around my WUSB11 problems and the XFS problems. Surely it
supports XFS?

This also worked with windoze games under winex. I did a "soundwrapper winex
War3.exe" for Warcraft III and it worked fine as well.

By "soundwrapper" I take it you mean artswrapper? If so, I would think that
running a wine/winex app would merely require that you prepend the wine
command with artswrapper:
"artswrapper winex "
