they could be loose or worn, the neoprene stops can harden with
age, and sometimes the stop arm can be loose on the valve spindle.
Typically Yamaha valves are beautifully manufactured - and it takes them a
long time to become clanky.

it one step further in the mouthpieces Jim Phelan makes.. we use solid

any variables in horn making to answer a question like
that. I've worked on 8Ds that were free blowing, ones that were stuffy,
etc... etc...
I'll be curious what kind of answers you get to this one!

Gee.. I don't know Julio We just finished a recording session this
morning - and the 3rd hornist (Kevin Owen) was playing an 8D There
was no running him outta town because of his large bore - and he sounded
great on it!
(rest of the section was, Rauch, Geyer, and Paxman)

Hmm,,, Personally I love my Paxman triple (one of the first they made) -
wouldnt trade it for anything (and no, I'm not a Paxman dealer). But I
do know that Ricco Kuhn is making a triple now and I'm pretty sure it'll
give Schmid a run for his money (and yes, I do sell the Kuhns..

OIL YOUR HORNS COPIOUSLY!
1. Oil your horn a few drops daily through the leadpipe!
2. Weekly, put a few drops in the slides.
3. Bi-Weekly put a drop of bearing oil on the upper and lower bearings.

st go around on this subject you described something that was NOT
dezincification
So, YES, brush, but more importantly OIL the horn with a few drops
every other day or so in the leadpipe (or keep my repair card
handy)

bjectivity of the instruments (i.e. how
well it is manufactured...) that is another thing entirely,,, but even
that doesn't always determine how well a horn plays.

As for Civil's recordings, the cadenza for 1st movement of K.495(Mozart) is
so unique, isn't it?
and I also love Civil's recordings for the Beatles:)
