My configuration:
RedHat Linux 7.3 on i686

It also suggests that I should check the uptime of the mysqld, so I can
verify that it hasn't crashed.
issuing the 'mysqladmin version' command gives this:

It sounds to me that you're exceeding the maximum packet size mysql can
handle.

I've been using a perl script to insert a very large blob (up to about 8
MB) into a DB successfully, but now I need to do it with a 34 MB BLOB,
so I upgraded to MySQL 4.0.1. First off, I can't get
max_allowable_packet to go higher than 64M, regardless of what I set it
to, but that

Tomasz,
I tested also with mysql-4.0.1 and it worked.
But are you using a non-latin1 character set?
If yes, the bug which was fixed in 3.23.49 might cause the problem.
Did you compile MySQL yourself? If yes, what compiler?
Please download the official MySQL-Max-3.23.49a binary from

Well...
[root@flow11 httpd]# mysqladmin -p version
Enter password:
mysqladmin Ver
re in dict0crea.c, reporting an internal error 17.

might be the root of your problem with 4.0.1.

Tomasz,
are you sure you are running 4.0.1? In the rpm of 4.0.0 there were no
foreign keys.
I tested this on mysql-max-4.0.1, and it worked.

of http://www.innodb.com/ibman.html you find detailed
information about every InnoDB version. For example, 4.0.1 == 3.23.47.
Foreign keys should work in 4.0.1.

Starting from version 3.23.50 InnoDB returns the foreign key definitions of
a table when you call
SHOW CREATE TABLE yourtablename
