Sorrowing lies the state of affairs of Goa. At the time if elections the so
called candidates talk of development / ptigressnot understanding/realizing
what actually development means. What one reads of smart City itself
disgusting.

Ultimately, who is responsible? Is it not the Voter?

Subject: [Goanet] SORROWING LIES OUR RIBANDAR

It is very distressing and deeply anguishing to see the very alarming state
of the roads in Ribandar. Our roads were already in dire straits when I saw
them last two months ago and was hoping that the sad state of affairs would
improve. But contrary to hopes and high expectations, the situation has
just worsened with the people having to commute on these treacherous roads.
Ribandar looks like a war battered zone.

The digging of our roads in Ribandar has been going on for the last three
years. Even for the blind eyes, the works are all shoddy and being done in
a very haphazard manner, endangering the life and well being of the locals.

With the monsoons fast approaching, it is a matter of grave concern as to what
the residents would have to endure if immediate remedial measures are not
taken.

Let us all make a very personal appeal to Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod
Sawant and our Chief Secretary Punit Goel to please swiftly intervene and
alleviate the misery looming large on the residents of Ribandar.

Subject: [Goanet] RESTORE POWERS OF GOA’S FRRO

Our Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant needs to be commended for promptly
raising with the Central government the long-standing issue of Dual
Citizenship, highlighting the grievances and hardships being faced by those
opting for Portuguese Passports and while applying for OCI and about those
Goans whose birth is registered in Portugal.

It would be also appropriate for the Goa Government to ensure that the
powers of the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) Goa are
restored. For the last few years, the office of the FFRO Goa has been
stripped of all powers and has been acting as a mere post-office for the
FRRO Mumbai.

The FRRO implemented by the Government plays a crucial role in ensuring the
safety and security of people visiting India and provides a central point
of contact for registering foreigners and issuing registration certificates
required for various activities. Goa is an important tourist state and
therefore the FRRO in Goa must be able to carry out all the necessary
functions just like Mumbai.

Everything now is being managed by FFRO Mumbai with even those applying for
OCI having to travel personally to Mumbai for the appointment. Goa having a
sizeable number diaspora overseas with Goans spread across the world, the
office of FRRO Goa should be restored as a fully functioning hub to deal
with affairs of those needing their services.

Let us hope that the Goa Government will act diligently and swiftly so that
our FRRO becomes empowered and fully operational to enable Goans to get
their work done without unnecessary inconvenience, delay and expense.

There should be an ongoing concerted effort to usher new innovative
administrative reforms in keeping with the changing times and evolving

It would also be appropriate to do everything possible to eradicate any

Sub: World Goa Day (Goa Day)

Dear Goanet Members,

Pleased to set the records right in view of certain doubts in some minds on the
subject based on facts with regards to origin of Goa Day (Cecil is right with
his comments). The very first Goa Day was celebrated in Kuwait in October 1995
by GOAN WELFARE SOCIETY – KUWAIT (GWS-Kuwait) with the large patronage of the
Konkani speaking community in Kuwait. Dilip Chico’s one-man Band was flown in
to perform for the Day and the event was a great success with over 3,000 in
attendance.

GWS-Kuwait celebrated Goa Day in Kuwait since 1995 every year with Food
Festival, Drawing contest, Singing Contest to preserve Goan Culture, Goan
Cultural Program with local talents/artists. Goan Stars were also specially
brought for the function to add flavor. The month of October was chosen for the
convenience of the Goan Community settled in Kuwait. It was held year after
year but stopped lately in compliance with the local laws prohibiting such
activities in Kuwait. GWS – Kuwait had an ambitious plan to promote Goan
culture among Goans leaving in Kuwait and way back home to establish a Goan NRI
City with like minds with all the basic facilities like, school, library,
ground, health facility, etc. The undersigned Managed the affairs of GWS with a
strong team of 12 members as President/associate to make room for New Blood
after the liberation of Kuwait in 1991until retirement in June 2010.

There is no doubt that Rene Barreto came up with the idea, thereafter, to
transform it to World Goa Day to celebrate the same in August every year which
idea was well supported by GWS-Kuwait to united Goans worldwide.

Goan Welfare Society – Kuwait (GWS) deeply mourns the passing away of our dear

Schools as well as in Goa every year since the foundation of GWS in Kuwait
after the Liberation of Kuwait. He also volunteered and paid the school fees
of needy/deserving students in Kuwait up to the Grade 12. He was also
instrumental in paying the airfares of destitute maids in Kuwait for their safe

times reaching the needy.

Mr. Sam Alphonso ventured into business in Kuwait “Al Thuwainy Trading and

Government Sector engaged in million of Kuwaiti Dinar contracts. He was one of
the Indian leading and successful businessmen in Kuwait since the early

all times by way of donations to the Churches, Schools in India always
supporting the destitute and downtrodden. He recruited Goans and other Indian

helping the needy and deserving.

With the support of GWS – Kuwait and other Indian Organizations in Kuwait, he
was instrumental in helping Don Bosco Fathers to establish Don Bosco High
School in Salmiya - Kuwait the leading Catholic Educational institution in
Kuwait.

Whenever he was called upon by GWS-Kuwait for assistance, he never failed to
come forward and support the noble causes of Goa and Goans. He was well
supported by his surviving Wife, Mrs. Mabel Alphonso, and the family and
attended the GWS - Kuwait functions held in Kuwait as Patron of the
Organization and shared his vision particularly to serve those in need.

While he was approached, at the time of Phase II expansion of the Hotel Goan
Heritage, to invest in Gulf Goans Hotels Company Ltd (Hotel Goan Heritage),
during the recession in Kuwait and existing Shareholders could ill afford the
increase in capital of the Company, with a brief presentation, at once came

[Goanet] Portuguese Education in Goa

2014-04-02 Thread Wilson Coelho
Hey Roland! While I do endorse your views and opinion expressed, I wish to share
my own experiences being portuguese educated having born much before the
invasion/liberation of Goa followed by Indian system of Education. The system of
education in Goa was unique. The teachers were well qualified and graduated
with special training in imparting quality education. The Portuguese
Government School Teachers had to be trained and qualified professionals. It
was not instructions (instrucao) alone but quality education. Today what we
have is only the instructions with lack of proper education. One can well
recall how the teacher would impart the quality education including how to
behave in the class, keep the class room clean at all times (civic sense),
respect the elders, how to cross the roads. Great importance was given to
proverbs pasted all around the classroom and students were drilled to ensure
that they put it into practice. The education was all round. A student of
Segundo Grao was equipped to take up the job of a Clerk with efficiency and
quality service. Some of today's Graduates from the Colleges cannot even draft
simple job applications. Priority was given to writing (caligrafia) and
drawing. Evaluation was done based on written and oral exams. Even the
private tutors were fully equipped to impart quality education to make all
rounder. One can write in volumes on the same. Wilson CoelhoMessage: 4

While I absolutely agree with what the WSJ is saying, there is a separation of
the effect of Portuguese education when you talk about Goa.

Whatever newspapers or VM says, from my own experience I know that ?Portuguese
education in Goa was of the highest quality. This from an individual (myself)
who had no connection with any Goa education.

You can fault the Portuguese with not making it easily accessible not only in
terms of cost but also in terms of social classes but definitely not in terms
of quality. Not that the British in India were perfect in this respect but they
were that much better.?

What I am saying is that the British India educated gentleman or professional
was no better equipped for a good future life than was his Portuguese Goa
counterpart.?

Now coming to modern day Portugal yes, the rate of educated youth is the lowest
in Europe but that is due as much to the inherently lower value assigned to
education which in turn was fed by economic opportunity in menial labor
available to them in the rest of that continent.

In Goa two forces met and blessed the people. The high ideal of education
inherent in the Goan people and the high quality of education when available. I
would have liked a third blessing to have come into play - that of easy access
- but alas for the wishes of mice and men, to twist a famous phrase.

In India today, quality is absolutely lacking except in elite academia and and
access too is so highly competitive that it is virtually unavailable in many
urban centers and even more rural outbacks. Suicide is an acceptable risk that
parents take. That never happened in Portuguese Goa, though it might be not all
totally fair to compare different ages as VM has done.

Dear Wilson,?

Good to see a post from you after ages.

There is reason and then there is reality. You have stated the reason. Why
should Goans in the Diaspora not be united in order to become to become more
effective on behalf of the community?

Now the reality. The demon that plagues Goans has always been Ego. Self before
others. Not to say this is overwhelming or overshadowing since silver linings
appear to run in the Goan playbook, created by the selfless ones in the
community. But these are exceptions to the ugly rule. The unification of Goans
in Kuwait if indeed it has occured, must be one such exception.

Toronto sadly has been the rule. There have often been unification rumors of
CanOrient and G.O.A.but nought has come of them. One of the reasons has been
that in Toronto, CanO has been low profile but has gone on to establish a
clubhouse where members socialize. GOA has nothing. But to be fair to the
latter they were once known (not any more) for events that were broadly
patronized by the community. CanO never had this.

If both these organizations ponder about what they have in common rather than
what keeps them apart, unity is feasible. But that big ugly specter of Ego must
be put down first.?

I don't see that happening but I, like others, will celebrate if it does.

the light of the day. Lot of selfless sacrifices had to be made to make the
dream a reality. One of the fellow Goans
late Flavio Pimenta, the very first Chairman and Managing Director, hailing
from Divar retired, voluntarily, from his lucrative job with Getty Oil Company
and
came down to take over the reigns of the Company in fulfilment of the dream of
Goans in Kuwait. It was on December 18, 1987 that Hotel Goan Heritage was
Christened. The name originates from a
small book written my Late Shri Enio Pimenta who was a lion in the Goa Assembly
than “Goan Heritage” which caught the eye of this writer being closely
associated in Goan politics prior to moving to Kuwait to see the greener
pasture. The firs CMD left for Heavely abode leaving behind the Heritage and
the Goan aristocracy which reflects on the Monument built “Hotel Goan
Heritage”. It was the art work and sweat of this man
duly supported by the team of Directors. It has successfully completed Silver
Jubilee
and payed handsome dividends to the Shareholders. The Board of Directors of
the Company worked
selflessly to ensure the success of the project some of them are no more.
Noteworthy to mention that almost all the
Directors were from various backgrounds with good Management and Operational
skills in different fields or walks of life which
has proved with the results. It’s, indeed a matter of Pride to mention that
Hotel Goan Heritage was declared as the best project ever financed by the
Economic Development Corporation – Govt of Goa Daman and Diu. EDC was always
on the forefront to finance
any future project promoted by Gulf Goans Hotels Company Ltd. Such is the track
record of the Board of Directors and the Company for the last 25 years.

There is no doubt that there are
serpents in all the communities in the world.
There were a handful of serpents with ulterior motives. The majority had the
will and enthusiasm to
accomplish the mission. The Board duly
constituted to manage the affairs of the Company worked hand in hand as a
family. Hotel Goan Heritage is the monument which stands on the shores of
Calangute overseeing the Arabian Sea with 80% of its employees are Goans.
Service with a smile has been the Motto from
day one and Goan Hospitality. There is
no doubt jealousy and ego we faced boldly and courageous by keeping such
characters at bay. No doubt, we are fighting the battles but truth, honesty,
sincerity still prevails tomorrow is unknown as they say past is history,
present is mystery and future unknown.
It should be understood that Honesty – Sincerity – Truthfulness and
Trustworthiness
are the only real keys for success. We made it to happen. If we can do it why
not the Goan Diaspora
worldwide. My humble appeal to Goan Diaspora to patronize this Project of Goans

Hey Bosco! Would appreciate if you will kindly do the needful - Thanks and

Let us concentrate on our roots. Had been instrumental in my journey to bring
all Associations in Kuwait under one banner organizing a Goa Day which was a
great success despite of the restrictions under the law of the land. Long live

The Canorient Christian Association of Toronto and the Goan Overseas
Association are considering merging the two Associations. The objective of this
merger would be to bring our communities and membership under a single
association to improve social and recreational services to our current members
and maximize effectiveness and opportunities going forward.
?
We invite our members to a special meeting on March 23rd at 2 pm to give each
member the opportunity to share your concerns, if any, and/or to enable your

fruitful conclusion.? This is an important milestone in our evolution and I

[Goanet] ANNOUNCING SAD DEMISE OF SR. FLAVIO PIMENTA - EX-CHAIRMAN OF GULF GOANS HOTELS CO LTD (HOTEL GOAN HERITAGE - CALANGUTE-GOA) ON LAST SATURDAY IN GOA

2013-03-03 Thread Wilson Coelho

It's with deep sorrow and pain that I wish to convey that Sr. Flavio Pimenta
is no more. May his Soul Rest in Peace and may his beloved wife and surviving
Son and Daughter have the courage to bear the sad and untimely loss. He
breathed his last on last Saturday noon. The funeral is scheduled for Monday.
This Great Personality left his lucrative job in Kuwait (Getty Oil Company) in
mid 70's and returned home (Goa) to give back what he could to his beloved land
where he was born. He lead Gulf Goans Hotels Company (Hotel Goan Heritage -
Calangute) in his capacity as Chairman Managing Director for several years
from its very inception of the Company way back in 1977 to its glory. He
voluntarily retired as Chairman after long service to the Community to make way
for new blood. He did pass through turbulent times and had to make great
sacrifices for the love of Goa and Goans by contibuting to the economic
development and creating employment to fellow Goans. A man of great vision and
Chief Architect of Hotel Goan Heritage, a successful project of Goans based in
Kuwait. The project completed 25 years of success on 18th December 2012 with
over 300% returns on the investment to its Shareholders. A successful venture
owned by Goans from Kuwait and managed by a Board of Directors. Indeed, a
Noble man of Vision, good knowledge, a mentor, source of inspiration, a fighter
of true cause. He stood like a rock at difficult times and always faced
challenges in his life for the noble causes. One can speak in volumes of a man
who made selfless sacrifices for the cause of Goa and Goans. He passed out
peacefully. He was always proud of his accomplished mission and contributed
emensely until his last breath. Please do inform others you know or known to

[Goanet] India moves to give long terrm visas Goans settled abroad by Gabe Menezes

2011-07-23 Thread Wilson Coelho

Hi Gabe! With reference to your post below particularly with reference to PIO /
OCI This will entitle them to stay in India for 15 years or 30 years
respectively without any need for a visa. The PIO and OCI cards are
renewable. to the best of my knowledge and belief OCI is valid for lifelong
as per the stamp fixed on the passport whereas you have quoted that it's valid
for 30 years. Secondly, the Indian mission here in Canada informs the holders
of OCI that they should transfer the Visa from old passport to new passport.
When this writer contacted the Indian mission in Canada, they were not sure but
stated that it is advisable. The writer also contacted the Immigration Office
in Bombay to clarify the matter and it has been clearly told that so long as
one carries the old passport is good enough to enter India repeat to carry old
expired passport with the Lifelong Visa stamped along with the New Foreign
Passport is a must. The transfer of the Visa Stamp from old passport to new
foreign passport is done at a cost of Dollars 25/- presently. This is
confusing to the minds of the fellow OCI holders abroad. Will u please check
with our NRI Commissioner and revert back on this issue so that minds are
clear.Wilson Coelho (Toronto/Goa/Kuwait) Message: 3

India moves to give long term visas Goans settled abroad
LONDON: Union Home Ministry has advised Indian missions abroad to extend
long-term visas to Goans settled abroad, NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro
has said.

Inaugurating a two-day global Goans Convention at the Indian Gymkhana near
Osterley here, Faleiro said he had taken up the issue with the Union home
minister after receiving several complaints from Goans holding foreign
passports that some of our Embassaies and High commissions abroad issue them
tourist visas, lasting three to six months.

Faleiro, a former Union Minister of State for External Affairs, said that
the Union Home Minister agreed that the procedure being followed is not
correct and that Goans settled abroad must be given long-terms visas or X
(extendable) viasas.

The minister informed me that his Ministry is advising the Missions
concerned as well as the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, Goa to
ensure that long term visas are issued to them and these visas are extended
from time to time, Faleiro.

He advised all Non-Resident Goans holding foreign passports to apply at the
earliest for a PIO (Person of Indian Origin) or OCI (Overseas Citizen of
India) card.

This will entitle them to stay in India for 15 years or 30 years
respectively without any need for a visa. The PIO and OCI cards are
renewable.

the next generation of Goans. Good Lord blessed Goa with wonderful gifts but
we do not know how to manage it to the best interest of Goa and Goans. Honesty

Appealed to all PIO to apply for the PIO or the
Overseas citizen of India (OCI) card.
If they apply for either the PIO or the OCI card, they
can stay in India for 15 years (in case of the PIO card)
and 30 years (in case ofthe OCI) card.

OCI CARD HOLDERS CAN STAY IN INDIA ONLY 30 YEARS?
WHICH MEANS, I CAN STAY IN INDIA UNTIL I AM 89 ?
(COMPLETES 30 YRS IN 2036)
BUT MY OCI VISA STICKER CLEARLY SAYS
MY VISA VALLID FOR LEFETIME OR LIFELONG (See pic)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk8/658550483/sizes/l/

WHAT’S LIFELONG? 30YEARS?

OR IS IT LIKE INDIAN CELLULAR Cos WHERE THEY SAY

LIFETIME HERE MEANS THE LIFTIME OF THE CONTRACT
OR LICENSE

I had received several complaints from Goans holding

SO, WHY SUCH A BIG FUS?

IT IS STRONGLY ADVISABLE THOSE WITH ROOTS IN GOA/INDIA TO GO FOR SUCH LONG TERM

SHOULD THERE BE SOME EMERGENCIES,
ONE CAN LEAVE HIS/HER COUNTRY SAME DAY OR
THE EARLIEST WIHTOUT WAITING TO APPLY FOR
FRESH VISA WHICH COULD TAKE TIME.

IT MAY BE NOTED THAT MOST EMBASSIES ARE OPEN
DURING WEEKENDS AND EVEN ON HOLIDAYS TO HELP
WITH YOUR EMERGENCY TRAVEL.
e.g. HIGH COMMISSION OF INDIA –LONDON
OPEN till 1900 hours on working days and from
10AM to 5.30PM during Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

ALL THESE FACILITIES ARE THERE BUT MANY OF US
ARE UNWARE OF IT.
e.g. SOMEONE’S MOTHER DIED IN GOA ON FRIDAY, HER
SONS GOT THE NEWS AROUND 4PM LONDON TIME BUT
THEY WAITED TILL MONDAY TO VISIT EMBASSY
ASSUMING THE OFFICE REMAINs CLOSED DURING
THE WEEKENDS. THUS DELAYING THE FUNERAL BY UPTO
3 more DAYS.
IF THEY HAD PIO/OCI OR 5 YR LONG TERM VISA,
THEY COULD HAVE LEFT LONDON FRIDAY ITSELF.
THEY ARE IN LONDON FOR OVER 25YRS THOUGH.

During my stay in UK say for 12 years,
I have had 3 FIVE years long term visas

[Goanet] GOAN WELFARE SOCIETY - KUWAIT (Posting on July 18, 2010)

2010-07-20 Thread Wilson Coelho

The GWS is very much active and nothing will stop its
activities. The time for the expelled members to defend
themselves is over, as they are already expelled after due care to preserve the
amity and unity besides exercising all the restrains to go Public. If they
make good the losses and accept their guilt, the Managing Committee, could
then review their cases. The members of the Managing
Committee do not have any personal vendetta on a single member expelled.

Till then matter stands status quo.

Whatever, action was taken at the AGM, which had to be postponed several times
with a hope to find an amicable solution using all the tools possible, where
you (Aleluia Fernandes)
were present, was in accordance with the GWS constitution and operating
Guidelines. The Special Recovery Committee Report read at the AGM is amply
clear.

Any stray talk or writings by the expelled members does not mean anything at
all to the Managing Committee, who are firm on their unanimous decisions. The
matter is clearly explained and is self explanatory and does not need any
further discussion.

The ex members of GWS, are free to have any number of meetings, and no one is
going to stop them, unless they do it unlawfully and mis-represent fraudulently
the Goan Welfare Society - Kuwait. I am sure everyone is well aware of
the consequences of mis-representing a legal entity.

It is a pity to see the current state of affairs at Goan Welfare Society-
Kuwait. The Society which was in the forefront by organizing some of the main
events like Goa Day, Christmas Tree, May Queen Ball, etc. is now on the verge
of disintegration.

And this is mainly because of the stubborn attitude and ego problem of
some of the current and ex-members of the Managing Committee. Each one?s ego is
bigger than the others. These members who are responsible to bring in others in
the Managing Committee are now at each other?s throat. -

[GOAN-NRI] RE: GULF GOAN ASSOCIATIONS (GGA)

2010-07-14 Thread Wilson Coelho

Dear Anthony,

Thank you very much for your valuable suggestion and opinion. Many of us have
been thinking in this direction of late and hope to make it a reality God
Willing. I do fully agree that like minds with interest of Goa and Goans as
the priority must come together not only in the Gulf but Globally with a strong
base in Goa with Goa based like minds who are sincere and devoted to the cause.
With over two decades of my close association with our Community, I do
strongly believe that a big number is standing for the cause particularly those
living abroad. Those in the middle east have no where to go but back home upon
their retirement or loss of job. Those in the East and West, with permanent
abode, also do look for Goa and Goans way back home. We must all work together
without the distinction of caste, creed and color. I am indeed proud of our
Community and will always be there to contribute my share. We need strong
benevolent leaders to lead. We need a strong man in Goa to champion the cause
with clear and clean mind besides the courage and determination to stand
upright. We must look forward no matter what. Let all the Global Goan
Associations come together under one banner in Goa with proper representation.
Together we can build the empire and no one can do it single handedly. We must
talk the talk and walk the walk. We must work together to find solutions and
not create problems. Let us be constructive critic with solutions. Let us be
proud of our rich cultural heritage. Such an organization must be duly
registered in Goa with a strong foothold / base in Goa - no politics - no
political games but champion the cause of Goa and Goans. We can salvage the
prevailing situation in Goa as it is not too late. Politicos will have no
choice when we stand together on one platform in one voice no matter who but a
benevolent leader who will take care of the generations to come.

May God Bless us all in our endeavors.

http://www.targetgoa.com/newsd-Areal-no-transfer-certificates-no-inclusion-in-electoral-rolls-575
2010-07-05

Sao Jose de Areal villagers have taken a major step forward for Goa. They have
demanded at the Gram Sabha hastily convened with a single day's notice, that
the election authorities must verify whether migrants whose names have been
included in the electoral rolls have been registered after verifying their
transfer certificates.

The members have lodged their strong objection to migrants being registered in
the electoral rolls. They have sought three months time to study the electoral
roll themselves and find out which migrants brought transfer certificates from
their native states. The gram sabha has determined that it will not allow the
registering of migrants without the transfer certificates from their native
states.

Thanks to the vigilance of the villagers of Sao Jose de Areal, other villages
can follow suit and demand to see if the migrant registered in the electoral
rolls have submitted transfer certificates or not. All that is needed is to
apply to the Election Commission Goa under Right to Information.

[GOAN-NRI] LET THE FACTS BE KNOWN - GWS REPORT

2010-07-02 Thread Wilson Coelho
Files and Register of Members and other important records which
are important for smooth functioning of an organization.

6- At one of the AGM, a member had requested to submit the detailed
breakdown of the Membership to ascertain the commitment and liabilities of GWS
towards its members and make appropriate provisions for settlement of claims
from time to time.

7- Let it be clearly known, to one and all, that no bank account can be
held in the name of GWS in Kuwait and hence the only option, right from
inception, was to hold GWS funds in individual names. The Managing Committee,
through duly approved Resolutions, from time to time, appoint three members,
generally the President, Treasurer and General Secretary, who are responsible
for maintaining, the GWS Funds in their joint names. In addition, a duly
signed undertaking is obtained from the signatories to the GWS accounts stating
that these are the funds of GWS and that they or their heirs have no claims
over these Funds. This practice has been going on for the last 20 years, and
it is the most suitable solution which has not only the approval of the
Managing Committee but of all the General Body Members. Similarly, GWS Funds
are held jointly, in three individuals names, in Goa as well, as is done in
Kuwait, to avoid funds being subjected to Income Tax and other deductions, on
interest earned by virtue of being Resident Accounts. It may be noted that
for the Income Tax purposes, GWS becomes a Resident Body and is liable to pay
income tax just as in the cases of individuals. Thus far, the Funds of GWS
have been enjoying the privileges of Non-Resident External (NRE) Accounts
thereby safeguarding every naya paisa earned by way of interest. Had the
members of GWS not been diligent in their ways of handling the Funds, most of
the Funds would have gone towards payments of Income Taxes. The disgruntled
elements among our community cannot bear to see the growing Funds in the names
of any three duly authorized individuals hence they align with non-members and
try to poison the minds of others, who really are not members of GWS. It
should be clearly understood that the GWS Funds belong solely to the members
who have contributed towards the building of the funds and no outsider has a
right to question GWS on this matter.

8- The people who talk about GWS and its management do so clearly out of
frustration as they are failures in their own life and cannot bear to see well
meaning Goans do good for the community. Simply put, they do not know how to
live and let others live.

9- During the last 20 years, GWS has done yeoman service to the Goan
community, particularly, lending a helping hand towards bearing repatriation
cost of destitute domestic workers, representing accident victims for filing
Insurance Claims on their behalf, assisting in transportation of mortal
remains of deceased persons, settling claims of death benefits, obtaining
Workman’s compensation, assisting in rehabilitation of displaced persons,
taking up legal and social matters with the Embassy of India in Kuwait, who in
turn take up the matters with the appropriate authorities here through
diplomatic channels, affording relief by way of payment of school fees of
children whose parents fall in the low income bracket, granting of scholarships
to top rankers in Kuwait and Goa.

10- It must be noted that every Goan who stayed here during the occupation
and those who came to Kuwait soon after Liberation, helped fellow Goans to come
back and take up their previous jobs. It was a very simple exercise to be
precise, the Employers were not aware of the contacts or addresses of the
people who worked for them before the ill-fated Invasion, so they were on the
lookout for the contacts, which were provided to them by those who had resumed
work at that time. Nobody really claimed credit for doing this yeoman service
to fellow Goans but did it in silence with honour and dignity. To be very frank
even non-Goans have provided information and contacts of Goans who were known
to them. These were not really new appointments. The fresh recruitments were
done much later when business in Kuwait started flourishing. Taking credit for
such service is indeed cheap to say the least.

The prime reason, for the expulsion of the members named herein are as
follows:-

During the tenure of the Managing Committee under the President ship of, Carmo
Santos, from 2004 - 2007, a lot of mismanagement had taken place, whereby the
image of GWS was badly affected. All the same, a few of the then Managing
Committee Members, who were eager to set things right, took the initiative to
hold a General Body Meeting in April 2007 and at that AGM, Chaired by Carmo
Santos, a new Managing Committee was duly elected, in which, Wilson Coelho, was
elected as the President of GWS, which extended from, 2007 up to 2010. Carmo

[Goanet] GWS ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING - REPORT

2010-06-25 Thread Wilson Coelho

Dear Dr. Jose Colaco,

With reference to your response on the above subject, I wish to say as under:

Before we enter into any meaningful debate on the contentious issues, embroiled
in the subject case, it is important to identify the key players and establish
their characters. Hence it is imperative that you investigate the matter
concerning the posts/letters of Rocky Fernandes and Jose Pereira, and come out
with your findings. If you are reluctant to do that, it is pointless
discussing further.

There is no such thing as chronologically, first things first, in the present
case. Every single act or incident is important. GWS Managing Committee is
abreast of each and everything, which you may not know, as you are told only
one side of the story. If you take a little time and dig out the facts since
2007, you will have a fair idea of what all has transpired and what were the
compelling reasons for GWS Managing Committee taking such a drastic action. My
advice to you, please get your facts together to build your case and be
prepared to answer all the questions that you may be asked, from time to time,
by the investigating authorities.

Now that you have taken a stand in defense of Gaspar Almeida, I would like that
you also take responsibility for the consequences that emanate from the case,
when the facts are brought on record and the misdoings are exposed. If this is
agreeable to you, please confirm that you are discussing this case as the duly
authorized Attorney of Gasper Almeida and the others named in the report. And
that you have no objection to being named as an accomplice in the cases, which
are being pursued for appropriate adjudication in the Court of Law. If for any
reason, you wish to back out of this debate, please rest your case here and
now, let us not indulge in playing games and gaining mileage over issues that
don’t concern you.

Awaiting your prompt response, the ball now rests in your court.

Best regards,

 Dear President Wilson Coelho,

Thank you very much for your response.

Let's agree to conduct this debate appropriately i.e. chronologically
 first things first.

Even though I am not subscribed to the digest form of GoaNet, I will
ask for them to be sent to me, BUT only after you have answered the
questions put to you, first. I am quite aware of diversionary tactics
and wild goose chases that devious folks try on others. Trust me, I
will not knowingly fall for such crap. Remember too that I have NO
problem telling off my very good friend Gaspar ...BUT ..IF and only IF
he is wrong. Knowing him, I am sure that he will accept my criticism.

 BUT first things first.

I understand that you do not have to answer any of questions put by me
to you. The QUESTION, you will surely agree, came up ONLY because you
voluntarily chose to post your alleged report on GoaNet.

In doing so, you opened the door to those questions.

If you choose, and it is your right (to remain silent) not to answer
these queries, it could be reasonably deduced that:

a: The said AGM was held without the right quorum, hence null and void.

b: President Wilson and his 'cabinet' are attempting to hold on to
the reins of power or disband the GWS without holding fresh elections

c: 'Audited accounts' of the GWS have not been presented to the membership.

d: GWS funds are being held (possibly fraudulently) in the name of
 private individuals.

e: Instead of it being the case that Gaspar Almeida manipulated ID
cards (whatever that means), it is President Wilson Coelho who has
 tried to manipulate Goan opinion.

AND (I am adding this after reading Gabe's very well made point)

f: President Wilson Coelho, in a Mugabesque fashion, did not allow the
'accused' to an open hearing to defend themselves.

At this moment, I hope the above is not true though I am not so
sure that it is not false.

I will await your proper and non-diversionary response, which you are
likely to provide (as is said in these islands) ONLY If you iz Man.

If any among us chooses to abuse me for my contribution to this
debate, I will accept the abuse, with my usual 'graceful acceptance of
 abuse'. (;-)

GWS ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING - REPORT

  Dear President Wilson Coelho,

Allow me to declare up front that the good hard-working Goans of the
Gulf are dear to my heart. Contrary to what some Goans in Goa believe,
you guys work very very hard in order to support your families in Goa
and consequently, Goan businesses in Goa.

Of all the Gulf-Goans I have known, I have come to particularly admire
the tireless Gaspar Almeida. I do not need to repeat hear how (as I
have heard from 3rd parties) he helped Goans displaced after the first
  Gulf War.

All this to state that whenever Gaspar's name appears, I am
interested. He is after all, my brother i.e. Gaum-Bhau.

Now, wrt the REPORT you posted on GoaNet, I had the following initial
  observations:

  a: Not again!
b: What exactly is Wilson talking about?

So, please, allow me to ask a few queries. If you are (or anyone else
is) able and willing to find the answers to the following, please do
  the honours:

[1] Is the circa 20 year old Goa Welfare Society (GWS) a registered
society? If so, where is it registered and as what?

[2] Does the GWS have a written Constitution?

[3] If it does, what is the set quorum for the Annual General Meeting?
Did you meet the quorum for the past AGM?

[4] At this AGM, were audited accounts for the preceding year
  presented? (Is your treasurer, Mr. Pimenta an certified accountant?;
not that it is essential for a treasurer to be an accountant). Have
audited accounts ever been submitted to the AGM during your tenure as
  President?

[5] Does the GWS hold any accounts in any banks? If the bank accounts
are in India, is the GWS registered in India? If not, are the funds
held in proxy-names? Is that legal in India, according to you?

[6] What exactly do you mean by the prevailing situation in your
statement .. 'no additional funds could be generated due to the
  prevailing situation'?

[7] Would you, please, care to expand on this sentence of yours:
some manipulations in the Membership Cards which were issued by the
  ex-General Secretary, Gasper Almeida?

[8] Who 'manipulated' the Membership Cards issued by the ex-General
  Secretary, Gasper Almeida?

[9] If there are any such cards, Would you, please, advise what the
  'manipulation' amounted to?

[10] If there are any such cards, do they also bear your signature as
  President?

I will leave it at [10] for now. I hope you will try answer them all, please

  Sincerely

[GOAN-NRI] GWS ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING - REPORT

2010-06-19 Thread Wilson Coelho

The Annual General Body Meeting of the Goan Welfare Society – Kuwait, was held
at the Carlton Tower Hotel in Kuwait City on 18th June 2010 from 11.00 am.
Until 1.30 p.m. Due to the crisis faced by GWS, there was a poor attendance
however, all those members who attended were appreciative of the initiative
taken by the Managing Committee to find a suitable solution to the existing
crisis.

The Meeting was called to order, by the President, Mr. Wilson Coelho, at 11.45
a.m. In his welcome address Mr. Coelho explained the reason for the situation
and held the ex-General Secretary, Gasper Almeida, responsible for the
situation that has come about. He urged all those present to bear with the
situation and to feel free to express themselves and voice their opinions and
suggestions, for the continuance of the spirit of cooperation and social
bearings among Goans.
Thereafter, the President conducted the business in accordance with the Agenda.
The General Secretary, Mrs. Sharon De Souza, read out the Minutes of the last
AGM which were unanimously adopted by the General Body. It was followed by the
Annual Activities Report for the term ending May 31, 2010, which was very
elaborate and precise.

In an explanatory note, the President explained the conditions under which GWS
is functioning and had a word of praise for the Goan Community at large, who
always stood by GWS, in every social cause and issue taken up by them.

In his Annual Financial Report, for the Year Ending 31 May 2010, the Treasurer,
Rabindra Pimenta, presented the financial status of GWS and went on to explain
that no additional funds could be generated due to the prevailing situation.
However, he was proud that GWS is on sound footing. The financial progress of
GWS has been hampered, mainly, due to the un-resolved financial crisis, for
which, Ex- President, Carmos Santos is a part.

The issues related to taking action against the erring members, was taken up
and the President, named four of those members who were responsible for the
crisis and who were placed under suspension (Ex-President Carmo Santos,
Ex-General Secretary Gasper Almeida, Ex-Member Suresh Naik and Ex-Member
Caetano Pinheiro). Their issue was placed before the General Body to decide on
their fate. The General Body decided to terminate their membership and a
Resolution to that effect was passed, with an overwhelming majority. The
Membership of the four members named in the Resolution (Ex-President Carmo
Santos, Ex-General Secretary Gasper Almeida, Ex-Members of the Managing
Committee Suresh Naik and Caetano Pinheiro), stands terminated with the passing
of this Resolution.

An issue regarding the Membership was raised and the matter was discussed and
debated. Finally, a decision was taken that the members who have re-registered
within the time limit, will enjoy the privileges of being full-fledged members

[Goanet] GWS ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING - REPORT

An issue regarding the Membership was raised and the matter was discussed and
debated. Finally, a decision was taken that the members who have re-registered
within the time limit, will enjoy the privileges of being full-fledged members
of GWS. Those that failed to register, have yet another chance to register
themselves, by approaching the Managing Committee of GWS with full proof of
their membership status. In the process of re-registration, the Managing
Committee has discovered that there have been some manipulations in the
Membership Cards which were issued by the ex-General Secretary, Gasper Almeida,
and the same needs to be scrutinized and corrected, with proof of Receipt of

How confusing it could be for a 5-Headed snake to bite someone. It will take 5

You have a very valid point to ask this question. However, now its time to wait
and watch if the government is running after the dead to give JUSTICE or the
DEAD (Nadia) HELPS Goans to unearth everything of Tourism Minister who is
absconding.

Hello Goans,

As of now nobody nows whats cooking in the Nadia Torrado's death case. But
obviously at the end it is the truth that will be revealed. Its true we cannot
come to a conclusion that Mr. Micky is on fault or not. But he himself has
given a green signal to the cops that he is the culprit in Nadia Torrado's
death by absconding.

And as far as meeting Mr. Micky personally or in some events does not mean you
can judge his character and its impossible if one has met him just once or
twice.

But my main point is that this is not the first case were in a women have
consumed poison and died.

Is this issue highlighted so much JUST BECAUSE SHE WAS A GOOD FRIEND OR
WHATEVER OF THE WELL KNOWN POLITISIAN Mr. Pacheco

When Germans, French, Russians etc are robbed, raped, murdered, etc in Goa
there is hell out of it ... WHY just because they were
TOURISTS??

A normal female who has been raped, consumed poison, etc and is still alive
nobody wants to fight for her living but when it comes to such cases where in a
politisian is involved the cops are dying to fight even after the DEATH.

This means that goan Government go to any extent to give justice to the DEAD
and not the LIVING.

EVERY POLITISIAN IN GOA IS DOING NOTHING BUT JUST PULLING EACH OTHERS LEGS so
that the goan newspapers have something to print on it.

India actually needs a PRESIDENT RULE and not the PARLIAMENT RULE.

Thanks,

Siya

Hello!

I met Micky personally when he was in Kuwait last month on private visit. Had a
good chat with him along with my friends. And mind you, I have a bit of sixth
sense to read/judge people. Seems nice guy and I totally agree with Mr. Agnelo
Gomes.

Ganthi law is prevailing in Goa. Goenkar mati haiyai.

I would not believe a Keralite tell this story. No decent Goans read this
Keralite Observer. There could be yet another shift in this story. I know
Mickey Pacheco in person in Goa as well as in USA. He visited my residence.
He's kind of guy I would say The Good, the bad and ugly but definitely not a
woman killer, he's a power hungry man who has ego. He may not be as corrupt as
Digambar Kamat and the others. He's vindictive against those who're bitter at
him. Digambar Kamat and the Congress set him, took advantage of his misgivings.

GOA HAS had and continues to have many Casanovas among its politicians. Going
back to Francisco Montecruz, who was the sports minister in the early 80s, to
Ravi Naik, who was the chief minister in the 90s, and the compulsive
philanderer Francisco Sardinha, now representing South Goa in Parliament. But,
none of the compulsive philanderers have been so brazen about their affairs.
And none have treated the women they seduced with such contempt and cruelty as
Mickky Pacheco. A tragedy was waiting to happen. And Nadia’s suicide is the
denouement of a life of debauchery. The tragedy is that nobody in the political
establishment, whether in the ruling coalition or the opposition have been
willing to name Mickky. Though they have had no compunctions about slandering
the victim. About a fortnight ago, Mickky’s latest victim, Nadia Torrado, a
married woman from Loutolim consumed an entire tube of Rattol.

[GOAN-NRI] Direct Indian Airlines Flights and deteriorating services to Kwait/Goa/Kuwait Sector

2010-04-24 Thread Wilson Coelho

24-04-2010
A delegation of Goan Welfare Society comprising of President and Treasurer
along with the President of Goan Overseas Association met with the outgoing
Indian Airlines Manager, Mr Surender Kumar and the incoming Manager, Mr.
Rambabu, and presented a memorandum for their evaluation and due consideration.

The pressing issues were discussed at length, mainly concerning: 1- Leaving the
checked-in baggage behind due to overload/overbooking and the inconvenience
caused to the passengers. 2- Rescheduling of the Thursday early morning
flight to Friday early morning, to suit the weekend travelers. 3- Arrangements
for providing connection on Saturday flight via BOM, by checking the baggage in
Goa direct to Kuwait, so as to avoid the hassles of carrying the baggage and
rechecking the same in Mumbai. 4- Parking of the Aircraft in Kuwait far away
from the Aero Bridge, resulting in inconvenience to passengers. 5-
Deteriorating services and limitations of the beverages served on board. 6-
Discrimination towards passengers who buy the tickets in India, by way of
lowering baggage allowances on return flights as compared to passengers who buy
their tickets in Kuwait. 7. Air fares charged to Goa sector as compared to
Chenai/Kochin etc. 8- Request for change in aircrafts so as to provide better
facilities to passengers mainly with regard to in flight entertainment
services, etc.

The delegation impressed upon the Management of Indian Airlines/Air India to
find remedial solutions to the issues raised to improve the services towards
the passengers flying to and from Kuwait/Goa/Kuwait on their direct and
indirect flights. In the course of the discussion both the Managers were
impressed by the manner in which the grievances were presented and assured the
delegation that all possible help and support will be extended to ensure that
the issues raised will be taken at the highest level to streamline and improve
the services for the benefit of passengers.

The delegation feels assured that the Managers have taken cognizance and are
seriously looking into the genuine issues raised. We do hope things will turn
out to be better for both the sides i.e the Airlines and the passengers, in the
mutual interest of promoting business on this sector, in the near future.

We urge our fellow Goans to patronize our National Carriers, and at the same,
if faced with any problems or situations that needs improvements, to be bring
the same to our notice so that we in turn can present the same to the
management for the betterment of our Goan community.

A copy of this Memorandum has also been presented to the H'ble NRI
Commissioner, Shri Eduardo Faleio and other Authorities in India

RE: [GOAN-NRI] Who is the liar, the journalist or the minister?

2010-03-10 Thread Wilson Coelho

Dear Readers,

All said and done only the Voters and no one else to be blamed. Truth must
prevail at all times. For errant elected representatives to be fixed in their
place the Voters alone have to be in action. It's a shame and disgrace to have
such elected representatives in the cabinet and in Governance if the reports
are true. God Help Us all and our future generation.

Subject: [GOAN-NRI] Who is the liar, the journalist or the minister?

http://www.topnews.in/files/Mickky-Pacheco3.jpg

Who is the liar, the journalist or the minister?

On 7th March 2010, after ZP elections, a Photo-journalist alleged that
Minister Mickky Pacheco had manhandled him by catching hold of his shirt
and asking him why he took his photo at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda where
all sealed ballot boxes are received for safe keep until 9th March (the
counting day).
He also caught hold of his camera and ordered to delete the photo that was
taken from a distant.
Minster also asked the journalist if he had taken any permission (from him) to
take the photo.
Minister Pacheco left the journalist only after the intervention of the other
newsmen
gathered there.

The journalist filed a case and the Margao police registered a non-cognizable
case against the Minister Mikkey Pacheco

Minister Pacheco denied manhandling of the photo journalist.

So, who is lying here? The Photo Journalist or the Minister Mikky?

It may be reminded that it was the same Ministers who was once accused of
slapping
a Jr. Engineer from Electricity Dept. What ever happens to the case, only god
knows.

Again, in a related incident, during Colva Mob attacking the CD producer's
house,
it was reported that one or two media men were manhandled there too
.
Now, I have some questions that need answers..
- Do we need to take permission of a public figure such as ministers when they
are
at public places like Nehru Stadium (not being with family, mistresses etc)?
- Are there any different rules for newsmen and other amateur / freelance
photographers when it comes to photographing ministers etc?

Any one?

Thanks for your help.

NB. We would also like to know what action did the GUJ has taken on this
assault case?
Or pending investigation, whether GUJ can boycott the minister’s official
coverage.

[Goanet] Global Goan Convention - Oman Memorandum GWS in Coordination with World Alliance of Goan Associations

2009-11-04 Thread Wilson Coelho

To,

Shri Eduardo Faleiro,

Commissioner for NRI Affairs,

Government of Goa,

Secretariat,

Porvorim – GOA

Hon’ble Commissioner,

Greetings
to the organizers of Global Goans Convention to be held at Oman on November 5th
and 6th
2009, from the Goan Welfare Society
(GWS)– Kuwait.

GWS in coordination with the World Alliance
of Goan Associations (Coordinators of World Goa Day) wish to
present a memorandum enlisting various issues concerning the Goan Diaspora
spread world wide together with suitable solutions in the best interest of Goa
and Goans:-

1.
Need for
registered/recognized Body in Goa: -Global Goan Convention is, indeed, a good
forum to interact with Goan Diaspora far and wide not only to revive our rich
and cultural heritage but also help to keep a very close link with the
motherland for its economic prosperity. In this regard, it is necessary
to register a Body in Goa comprising of
Retirees linked with Goan Diaspora duly recognized by the Office of the
Commissioner of NRI Affairs in order to
function and carry out the task assigned to them by the Goan Diaspora.

2.
Visa
requirement for Persons of Goan Origin: -
Several issues of vital importance have been raised at the various
Global Goan Conventions in the past without any positive results. One such
issue is that of Persons of Goan
origin holding Pakistani Passports where appeal
was made to ease their plight to obtain Visit Visas in order to enable
them to visit India. We regret that the issue is still in its
infancy and nothing concrete has transpired.
Is there a solution to this effect forthcoming?

  Likewise persons of Goan
origin born in Pakistan
even though holding Canadian, American, European etc. Nationalities, the
process to obtain the Visit Visas to India are faced with similar
problems as mentioned above.

3.
Recognition of Indian Degrees Abroad: - The
issue of recognition of Graduation Degrees conferred on successful
students by Indian Universities with
regard to the prevailing system of
10+2+3 are not recognized globally and the status still continues to be
the same despite of taking up the matter
at previous Global Goan Conventions.
We regret to once again bring up the matter because prospective job seekers
abroad are faced with immense hardships and denial of due credit with respect
to their
qualifications. The international
standard requires that the Graduation Degree should be of total four years
whereas Indian Degrees being of three years fall short of one year. This
anomaly needs to be corrected or
International Standard should match with our system of Education

4.
Recognition
of Goa University
Engineering Degrees:- As regards
Engineering Degrees conferred by Goa
  University
are still not recognized despite being told that the matter was taken up and
settled. In Kuwait, the Society of Engineers
still do not accept the Goa University Engineering Degrees.

5.
Centre for
Training in Goa:- Skilled and Semi-Skilled man power together
with the domestic helpers should be trained in the field of their profession
before taking up jobs in the Gulf. In
order to achieve this goal it was proposed to set up a Centre in Goa to impart
training but no results are seen. The only partial training that is imparted,
to our knowledge, is spoken Arabic

6.
Diploma/Professional Studies in Kuwait:-
In one of our of earlier Memoranda, up gradation of the Educational system in
the Middle East in order to facilitate the students to complete higher
education as per the Indian system was made but regrettably the matter is still
lingering on. The highest education in
the Middle East for which the local
Governments have given sanction is upto the STD XII (under graduate). There is
a need for imparting Diploma
education in the professional streams similar to those courses conducted by Fr
Agnel Ashram / Don Bosco in India. This matter needs to be addressed to the
local authorities in the Middle East so that
those Indian Institutions who wish to conduct such courses may be facilitated.

7.
Football Ground/IAC :-Indian Arts Circle i.e premises owned and built by
Indian Diaspora
in the Gulf Country where Indian Community leaders come together to invest in
such social causes to foster amity among the Indian Community, the Embassy in
such a region should coordinate with the local Authorities to obtain necessary
grant of land on lease (ownership is not
permitted).

Similarly open
space for the purpose of utilizing as Football Grounds should be authorised by
the local authorities through the intervention of the Embassy. With the
growing use of vacant land for the
purpose of commercial and residential purposes, the grounds that earlier were
used unhindered for the purpose of conducting Football games and other
activities are no longer available.

8.
 More
Direct Goa/Kuwait Flights:-Although
there are a few flights operated by Air

2009-09-10 Thread Wilson Coelho

Hi Oscar!

It is no issue at all as far as we are concerned. Since it originated in
Kuwait as Goa Day with initiative of GWS it went that way. We have no issue to
call it World Goa Day. We do very much believe part and parcel of Global Goan
Community in every respect. The very foundation of GWS is based on this spirit
in letter and word.

Thanks and regards

(Wilson Coelho),
Treasurer(Rabindra Pimenta) and Committee Member (Franco D'Souza), met with
the newly appointed Ambassador
of India to Kuwait, H.E. Shri Ajay Malhotra, and appraised him of the various
issues concerning the Indian community, with particular stress on the Goan
Community, living in Kuwait, and suggested measures to improve the services to
fellow Indians, wherever necessary.

The
Ambassador, was very receptive to the issues put forward, and during the course
of the discussions, he assured that everything possible will be done to benefit
the Non Resident Indians, living in Kuwait. He went on to highlight the
improvements and major changes already effected in the Counselor Section at the
Embassy, since assuming charge, and vowed to do more for the citizens of India,
who are here to work and earn their livelihood in a dignified manner.

He also assured that he would be pleased to work in close coordination with the
various Associations involved in Community Development Programmes, and do
whatever needs to be done to assist in carrying forward to task at hand.

In view of the keen interest evinced by the Ambassador of India, the Indian
community can look forward to better services ahead, which will ultimately make
a big difference to our reputation and honour, in this part of the world.GOAN

Dear Mr. Faleiro,

Have been a silent admirer of your esteemed postings and the knowledge
that you share. I do fully subscribe for your views and opinion
expressed. I wish to add that Devnagiri must be given due importance
due to the fact that the script will help particularly the catholics to
learn Hindi and be something at all India level i.e to rise and shine
in the Indian cadres and not confined to Goa. We need effective and
qualified Goan administrators and not be ruled by others. It is for
sure Devnagiri will help our sons and daughters to outshine at all
India level.

With all my best wishes

Subject: [GOAN-NRI] Here’s the Answer - to the Ordinary Dance at Cidade de Goa

Here’s the Answer - by Jim Reeves
When two worlds collide, over an Ordinance

 By Cecil Pinto

The seething saga that led to what is popularly known as the Cidade de
Goa Ordinance has thrown up a lot of names. Auduth Anju Timblo,
Gustavo Renato Pinto, Claude and Norma Alvares, Rozendo Mendonca, Ivo
Cardozo, Charles Correa, Babush Monserrate, Victor Albuquerque, Cove
Machado, Emiliano da Cruz, Digambar Kamat, Minguel Martins and of
course eventually Aires Rodrigues will pile on. One name that has been
ignored is Jim Reeves, whose Christmas Carol album is mandatory in
every Christian home in India. Gentleman Jim as he was called, because
of his warm velvety voice, died in a plane crash in 1964 – the very
exact same year that the central Land Acquisition Act of 1894 was made
applicable to Goa. Coincidence you say? Read on as our special
correspondent Skeeter Davis answers a few Frequently Asked Questions
 regarding the Ordinance.

Q: I hear the ITC WelcomGroup chain of hotels was involved in the controversy?

A: Nothing of that sort. A popular song by Jim Reeves was,
“Welcome to my world, Won't you come on in, Miracles I guess, Still
happen now and then. Knock and the door will open. Seek and you will
find. Ask and you will be given. The key to this world of mine”. The
Timblos took this as their theme song and many politicians and
bureaucrats have since knocked on their doors, and in reciprocal
 opened many doors for them.

Q: Is that why some prominent people opposed to the ordinance still
refer to Audhut and Anju Timblo as their ‘good friends’, and as
 ‘decent’ people?

A: How people who are committing huge atrocities on Goan land and its
people, through destructive mining and illegal hotel operations, can
be termed as ‘decent’ is beyond me. The Timblos have played host to
everyone who matters in Goa at one time or another. There’s no such
thing as a free lunch. Now its payback time and that’s why you see so
much groveling. As Jim Reeves sang, “From a Jack to a King, With no
regrets I stacked the cards last night. And lady luck played her hand
just right, And made me king of your heart.”

 Q. What about the Opposition? How come they’re not raising hell?

A: How can they? You must understand that till two years back they
were in power. As Jim Reeves sang, “I can't stop loving you, I've made
up my mind, To live in memories, Of old lonesome times. I can't stop
wanting you, It's useless to say. So I'll just live my life, In dreams
of yesterday. Those happy hours, That we once new, Though long ago,
Still make me blue. They say that time, Heals a broken heart. But time
has stood still, Since we've been apart”

Q: Is it true that many of the hotel’s employees will loose their jobs
if the illegal section is demolished?

A: First understand who are the crocodiles and why the tears. One
gardening contractor (turned writer overnight) will lose one of his
many landscaping contracts around Goa. One musician (turned writer
overnight) will lose one of his many entertainment contracts. It’s not
about livelihoods, but about greed. A few employees might be
retrenched as happens all over Goa in much bigger numbers. The hotel
owners arm-twisted all these people to get sympathy from the public.
They failed miserably but the Government got the excuse they needed to
pass the Ordinance. The Timblos used these words by Jim Reeves to
convince the gullible employees, students and contractors, “No matter
what the world may say about me. I know your love will always see me
through. I love you for the way you never doubt me, But most of all I
 love you 'cause you're you.”

Q: Can’t these Cidade and Timblo lovers stop being so pathetically
 subservient and self-serving?

A: They should sing, as Jim Reeves did, “Please release me let me go,
for I don't love you anymore. To waste our lives would be a sin,
Release me and let me love again”

Q: Now that the Timblos have broken so many laws are you saying only
the general public, who have not been feted and pampered at Cidade de
Goa, will stand up in protest?

A: All right-thinking citizens, whoever their employer whatever their
 livelihood, should protest

[GOAN-NRI] Good News to Goan in Kuwait - More Flights to Goa

2009-03-15 Thread Wilson Coelho

More Direct Flights from Kuwait to Goa

As the summer season approaches, passengers intending to travel to Goa,
directly from Kuwait, will be glad to hear the good news, that Jet Airways will
commence operation from Kuwait to Goa via Mumbai, on daily basis, with effect
from 29th March, 2009. All the flights will be departing from Kuwait at 2100
hours and arrive Goa at 0730 hours. Customs clearance facilities are available
at Dabolim airport, on arrival. The fares will be very competitive and, as
such, a great advantage to the Goans, who have been looking forward to such
opportunities, since long. This good news is communicated to the Goan Welfare
Society, by the officials.

It is also learnt through reliable sources, that Air Arabia, will commence
direct flights from Kuwait to Goa via Sharjah, with effect from 19th April,
2009. The new schedule of flight operations will be out soon. This again is a
big advantage for passengers travelling to Goa, as the fares are going to get
cheaper and travel convenient.

More information is available with the Airlines offices in Kuwait and Goa, and
will be published worldwide soon.

2009-01-27 Thread Wilson Coelho

Hi Rene!

Never ever get disheartened by a few of petit minds that do exist not only in
the Goan arena but in human race. There are a handful of few who work to
destroy the humanity not realizing what harm they are doing. This is out of
cheer jealousy that brews in the minds of few who cannot do anything better and
cannot see anyone else doing better. Here in Kuwait I can name the characters
and expose the facts based on the gournd reality.

It is high time that those involved in service to mankind and Goan Community at
large work with courage and determination and march forward. Such handful
snakes are in every corner of the world not only among the Goans but in the
human race. Let us be proud of our rich heritage. In your own words Rene -
Together we can make it Happen

Ladies Gentlemen, Boys and Girls

Time and again we hear Rene Barretto echoing/crying in wilderness about Goan
Unity at each and every occasion and many of us in Goan Diaspora neglect his
call
for reasons unknown. A case in question is Rene's recent e-mail in which he
pleads for unity and he has asked some leaders to respond his e-mail of 21
January 2009 for example where he poses an open question We are often told
that Goans in Canada are not inclined to work TOGETHER (Lack unity ) ? why is
it so? . I understand Rene has not received any response to this! In
Melbourne Goan associations are also split with humongous differences of
opinion. What is it with us Goans ? Do we think leadership comes from superior
caste or education? I am told that it does not spring from either of those but
through mindset. So basically something is wrong with
our mindset.

Are we all taking Rene bab for granted? Don't we have any regard for what he
and those associated with him have done so far? Rene has worked hard and
continues
to work hard with a group of his close mates. Why can't the rest of the Goans
join in the bandwagon of Unity?

Why is it that we Goans cannot work in unity? Seriously, apart from those
chamai excuses why are some of us the way we are? I have seen some
Goan motto that read Unity is strength whereas the same folks have double
standards. They refuse a valued event like World Goa Day on grounds
of why promote Konkani in overseas countries.

A Goan is not a Goan if he/she cannot speak Konkani. How many of us can speak
Konkani and why do we call ourselves Goans. The Goans in Goa are doing
a lot for Goa, whereas the Goans in Diaspora are lingering their real support
for Goa and all things Goans. We all need to find a joint way of helping Goa
and our
identity which is at crises at the moment. Let us all put a stop to what is
happening in Goa. Arwin Mesquita's e-mails show the pathetic stituation in
Goa.

The introduction World Goa Day by Rene Barretto throughout the world was
supposed to be an event to bring all Goans together not only for a day but
begin it
with that day. Why is it that many of us have that narrow mind and we love to
work in vacuum?

Goa needs our calibre, experience, education and all the support we can, how
about we all work together as there is no other way then working together
that we can achieve. If our generation does not pull up our socks and help, our
children and grand children will loose what we and our parents have cherished
of our lovely Goa.

The much desired Goan unity is required urgently to fight out the evil forces
against us. Goans in Goa cannot do it alone, they need our help in the Goan
Diaspora.

Regards

OSCAR

RE: [GOAN-NRI] *Best UNITY in the World*

2008-11-14 Thread Wilson Coelho

Dear Fellow Netters,

I have read the postings with keen interest. I have been leaving in Kuwait
since 1976 and earning my daily bread. I am indeed a proud Goan and yet to see
anyone superior to our fellow Goans barring a handful. We are nearly 50,000
odd Goans living here and earning their daily bread just as I do. I have also
very close association with other Indian communities besides other
nationalities. I dont find them any better than my fellow Goans.

Yes in every community there are a handful of people who out of jealosy or the
reasons best known to them come up with fabricated stories to put down fellow
humans. These characters time and again proved that they cannot talk the talk
and walk the walk. I have yet to see their good deeds or actions. Going
through the net I can well judge for myself who is who and I do strongly
believe that what the heart feels the tongue reveals. The genuine characters
are judged the way they walk, the way they talk and the way they write.

There are lots who are wanting to do good and help but do not want to come
forward openly with the fear of backlash/unhealthy criticism from these handful
of characters who portray themselves as reknowed journalist, social workers etc
etc. In my close association with fellow Goans, apart from other communities,
I have come accross many wanting to help the down throdden with open arms but
refuse to come forward to avoid dirty and filty criticism from these handful
anti social elements. In fact, in Kuwait all know who is who being a small
world and close neat society. They say truth and thruth alone can never lie
hidden. We can fool some people sometimes but not all the people all the time.
I have seen these few handful characters pose themselves as businessman,
managers, captains etc but the ground reality is well known. One can compare
them to kitten that close their eyes when they drink the mothers milk thinking
that the whole world is gone to sleep. The truth is that they cannot rise and
shine but make all the attempts to put down those who graciously do. It does
not matter to what or where we belong but what matters each one needs to work
hard for own better tomorrow and earn laurels for our beloved land.

I have seen Goans going out of their way to help those in need as such I find
no reason to believe why we should take the example of Keralites. One needs to
live in that community to know their problems better. In conclusion I would
like to say that we Goans are second to none and no other Community is above
us. I had the prilledge to work with various nationalities apart from other
Indian Communities. Let us be proud of our rich cultural, social heritage and
let us work together keeping aside the handful who try their best to destroy
those who work with sincerety and dedication besides helping out fellow Goans
contributing to the cause and welfare of Goa and Goans. I do personally get
added energy the moment these particular shameful elements of ill repute in
Kuwait ever criticise. There are lots of fellow Goans to admire/appreciate
quietly and genuinely the good and noble works done by fellow sons of the
soil. It is only through the courage and determination once can achieve.

Long live Goa and Goans Wilson Coelho

[Goanet] An Open letter to Goan Parents. Thanks Selma,I read it twice...about
the parentsThought provokingSome more of it please!QuoteYet again I see Goa's
parochial views come to the fore, as if to prove to the world that we live in
the back of beyond. Everytime the victim or alleged victim is a young women,
Goans seem bent on questioning the parenting skills of these unfortunate
girls.Goans, please don't wear your hypocrisy on your sleeves. Please, first
tell us where are the fathers and mothers of all those girls that board at
Carmels and other hostels? Are they not young girls too, who are left alone to
do as they please, because their Goan parents work in the Gulf? Please tell us
also where are fathers of all those boys who roam the streets on their bikes,
flashing money and spending like there is no tomorrow? Perhaps their fathers
are onboard ships, bearing the brunt of callous customers. Perhaps their
fathers are enduring the heat of the Arabian sun. In anycase, a whole
generation of young men and women have grown up now, without fathers, without
mothers, in the custody of aging grand-parents, sometimes worse still left in
the care of Carmelite nuns.We too have been guilty of leaving our children
alone, but we've had to do it, to fill our bellies. perhaps these foreigners
have their own reasons as to why they are single-handedly bringing up children.
Should we sit in judgement of them?As a Goan girl who finished her college in
Goa, let me tell you, your sons and daughters are no better than those of these
foreigners. Your sons and daughters are doing exactly what these Western
girls and boys are doing. Except you don't know it. And if you do know it, you
prefer to blind yourself to the truth, always assuming that your own Shanna boy
or Baby-girl would never do such a thing. The truth is, adolescent hormones are
not so discriminatory. They run wild in everyone. As a Goan mother of a small
Goan girl, I am no more capable of protecting her from the pedophiles or the
rapists of this world, than I am of stopping the tide. I cannot hide her from
the world, I cannot incarcerate her in an ivory tower to keep her safe. She has
her own life to live, she has her own path and destiny to find, her own
exploration and experimentation to engage in. I can only wish for her safety. I
can only hope that the mothers of sons have done their job, in raising
responsible men.So please stop blaming outsiders, they are parents just like
you and me, trying to do their best in this confusing world in which they have
little control.Best,[EMAIL PROTECTED] for Goa NRI related info...

Dear Arwin,
It was a pleasure meeting you. My hat off to you for your enthusiasm in trying
to make a difference and in bringing some identity to Goa. Your power point
presentation was indeed uplifting and I am very appreciative of the effort you
put in to generate the same. Best of luck to you in this endeavour.

As Neville mentioned, we are part of the team working on the Goa-America Heart
Foundation (GAHF) project.

The Trustees in Goa under the direction of Ian Martin are doing a wonderful job
in making this project a reality and have been diligently working on it for few
years. Please visit our website www.gaheartfoundation.org. Attached is a
brochure (front and back) that we had put together for Phase 1 of this project.
We are very much interested in obtaining funds for both phases of this
project. Details of both phases are given below. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am based in New Jersey.
We are counting on you to help spread the word about this not-for-profit

financially.

Who we are
Goa-America Heart Foundation (GAHF) is a not-for-profit organization,
established to promote state-of-the-art cardiac care in Goa.
The idea of creating Goa-America Cardiac Center (GACC) in Goa originated from
Dr. Daniel Neville Mascarenhas, interventional cardiologist practicing in
Pennsylvania and New Jersey in the United States of America. He has been the
driving force behind this project.
The Trustees of GAHF are professional individuals who are established in their
respective professions in the USA and in India, driven by a desire to help our
homeland in the area of health care in general and cardiac care in particular.
GAHF Inc., seeks to galvanize the Indian community in general and the Goan
community in particular as well as the international community, to embrace this
project of providing cardiac care in Goa, and to support it with their
financial, material and professional resources, and by contributing their time
and skills.
GAHF Inc. will remain the primary vehicle to raise funds and disburse them, as
outlined in the mission statement below. GAHFT, as explained in the mission
statement below will be involved directly in negotiation for, and acquisition
of, property and equipment needed to provide the care. It will supervise and
monitor the operations initially of the cardiac clinic and later of the cardiac
care center, and its quality of care.
GAHF, Inc. is a duly registered not-for-profit corporation in the State of New
York in U.S.A. with approval from Internal Revenue Service for 501(c)3 tax
exempt status for US donors. It has an operational charter and by-laws
governing procedures and the business to be undertaken by the corporation. The
office holders of GAHF do not receive any remuneration for their services.
There are currently no administrative costs associated with the organization,
as time, skills and facilities have been provided by its members and
well-wishers in India and abroad on a no-cost basis.
Vision
Goa-America Heart Foundation seeks to provide affordable cardiac care to Goans
regardless of caste, creed or socio-economic status. It will place particular
emphasis on preventive care, and on educating the public on the importance of
prevention, particularly in the area of Cardiovascular Health.

RE: [GOAN-NRI] HI

2008-09-22 Thread Wilson Coelho
Hi All!

I do strongly believe that we Goans are not different from any other Community
or Nationality for that matter having worked and lived under such and environ.
Those of us deeply involved must pay least attention to those defective and
jealous minds that cannot do anything better but all out to criticise for the
sake of critic. In my life I went to the extent to challenge these bunch of
crooks to come forward and take over the reigns and do something better than
those engaged in serving the humanity. These characters are back benchers all
out only for the personal glorification. This is very clearly evident in the
write ups and personal publicity more than actions. Jealousy is inborn in their
blood.

My request to those involved in the service of the Community to march forward
and never to look back but to give ear to all to improvise on the service only.
Constructive criticism is welcome and very important for the uplift and
development of the Community Service for sure. As for as I am concerned it
gives me the courage and determination to move forward and accept the
challenges in life. I know it is hard for some but we have to move forward and
not sussegado or sleep over matters of importance.

God Help those in forefront

LEASE HOUSING PROJECT INFORMATION MEETINGS FOR THE GOAN AND INDO CHRISTIAN
COMMUNITYThe Goan and Canorient Seniors’ Clubs, the GOA and the GCO, invite you
to an information meeting, to learn about a Life Lease Housing Project, for the
Goan and Indo Christian (Manglorean, East and Anglo Indian, etc.) Community
Seniors’ in the GTA.The concept of Life Lease Housing is a Community based
multi unit dwelling developed for Active Seniors, which would be equity
financed by the prospective resident, who would be seeking to downsize in the
next 5 to 7 years. The resident has the right to sell the Lease on the unit at
market value or pass it down through the estate. The project would also be of
interest to children who wish to purchase housing for aging parents and later
move into it themselves and to investors who would purchase a unit to rent out
to a Senior resident. The Life Lease Housing Project will be sponsored by the
Goan Charitable Organisation, which will have the benefit of obtaining GST and
PST rebates on the building construction costs and savings on the Land Transfer
Tax, which combined with the lower base cost, will price the units below the
new condominium market value. The building will be designed for Seniors’ seeking
an active life style and contain Social, Dining, Exercise, Medical and
Religious facilities, similar to a modern Seniors’ Residence.Location of the
Project will be determined by the results of a Survey to be completed after the

Further to the publication on the local dailies, a Notice is hereby given that
an Extra Ordinary General Body Meeting will be held on 29th August 2008 at
Carlton Towers from 11:00 am onwards, due to the prevailing situation which
needs to be addressed by the General Body to find appropriate solutions.

At this Meeting the Managing Committee proposes to present the pending
unsettled accounts which were handed over to the present Committee by the
ex-President Carmo Santos on 20th April 2007 which are inconclusive.

The present Managing Committee has exercised all options to recover the
unsettled amounts to the tune of about KD 3000/- shown as outstanding in the
statement of accounts from 2004 to 2007 but could not succeed due to improper
records.

The Records of the Society which are in the custody of ex-General Secretary,
Gasper Almeida continue to be in his custody despite of written notices and
verbal requests to hand over the same to the newly elected General Secretary,
Mrs. Sharon De Sousa. Till date the records continue to be illegally held by
ex-General Secretary.

In addition to addressing the above concerns, the following Agenda will also be
discussed:

To find suitable solutions to discipline members who resort to un-ethical
behavior.

To review the proposed amendments to the Constitution, presented by the
Managing Committee, for adoption after due consideration.

All members are requested to be present and participate in the deliberation and
safeguard the interest of the Society.

Kindly bring your Membership Cards or this Notice for identification.

RE: [GOAN-NRI] Please Do Not Criticize

2008-08-30 Thread Wilson Coelho
Dear Anthony (NRI-Goan),

My salutations for the views well expressed. It is a sad part that a handful
of characters are all out to criticise only for the sake of criticism. I do
concur with the views well expressed, if these element were to come up with the
solutions to the views expressed or come up with concrete proposals for sure
Goa will be a paradise to live. Guess every community on this planet have such
characters. The result is that good people stay away as they do not like to be
subjected to such unhealthy criticism. They simple prefer to watch while
others are ready to face it boldly and courageously. With my close association
with the community affairs I did learn a lot and stood with courage and
determination to fight out with the bunch of character for noble cause of Goa
and Goans. One does get inspired at times by such unhealthy criticism and take
it as a challenge. It would be so nice if they come forward and hold the
reins in their hands and do better for the well being of our Community. Guess
they are born that way and will die that way only being a part of Good Lord's
creations.

Please keep up the good works for sure it will pay in the long run.
With all best wishes
Wilson Coelho

[GOAN-NRI] Please Do Not Criticize

Dear Goans,

Please do not Criticize. If you find any wrong of any one, please tell him. If
you didn’t agree with his views, please inform him, but please do not
criticize. Tell him in a polite way. Give him the Solutions. If you find that
person is not doing the right things, please tell him to do the right things,
but without criticizing it. Please tell him in a nice way. He will appreciate
your courage and sincerity in Saving Goa Goans.

You point his mistake, but with the solutions. You tell him that he is doing
the mistake, but with the solutions. If you have good views and the right
things to do, please come forward without criticizing it.

Sometimes, we loose the right person, due to unnecessary criticism. May be he
is doing the mistake. So, inform him and show his mistake with the solutions or
you can come forward and do the right things. No one is stopping anyone from
doing the Good Right Things for Goa Goans. Only Criticizing and then
disappearing is not good for Goa Goans.

May be we didn’t realize, how many True Goans, we have lost due to unnecessary
Criticism.

Please, this is my Personal View on Criticism and I always avoid Criticizing,
who are really doing Good for the People.
