RE: [313] The Future of Detroit
Very good essay, Lester. I agree on most points except one: And even though Detroit's suburbs have a vested interest in helping Detroit (as Detroit goes, so goes suburban Detroit), they are too blinded by short-sighted concerns tied to racism to truly engage in the help that the city needs. I don't think that Detroit's suburbs (generalizing here...) are interested in anything but the stadiums and casinos downtown. The main factors are that the majority of jobs are not located in Detroit but in the suburbs so unless you really enjoy hockey, baseball, or gambling there really is no need to go to Detroit (understandable). I'm not saying the avoidance of Detroit is conscious in any way, but if you take away the need to interact with downtown, you ask yourself what's down there that I can't do a couple of miles from home? There are many cities in the U.S. that are thriving without casinos to foot the bill and turn their downtown into a shitty version of Las Vegas. Go a couple of blocks from the Motor City casino and you're in an area most people wouldn't be caught dead walking through. Back in the day when the RenCen was built there were a lot of complaints that it segregated itself with the infamous wall and created a virtual bubble with the rest of downtown Detroit. These casinos have done the same thing. A positive example of rejuvenation was (yes, was) Trapper's Alley in Greektown. Before the renovation, it was literally an alley of cobblestone with some antique shops and a historical landmark. At its peak (84-86), this was the place to hang, shop, eat, buy music on the top floor, they even had a club in there. The point is, it was an attraction for suburbanites as well as locals without alienation of either group. Casinos will never be the answer. They do not provide enough of a service the community, other than taxes, to be a positive addition. As far as Kwame goes, I think that's a good thing. I went to Cass Tech with him and it's really cool to see one of my classmates as mayor, but strange as well. It will be good to see what a fresh young mind will bring to the table. Our last 2 mayors have put the city in the position it is now. It's a shame and a disgrace, it really is. First I'll talk about the events themselves. I got a chance to attend both the Inaugural Ball and the Club Crawland to a certain extent these events represented a stark departure from the previous mayor's events. Not so much in the type of event, but moreso the crowd. To give you a brief examplewhen Dennis Archer St. was first inaugurated, a party geared for the younger crowds was held for him at the State Theater. I attended along with my wife, and though we were glad we went, the first thing that jumped out at us was the crowd. Even though the event was open to the public and advertised as such, the only people there seemed to be related through a number of black upper-class networks. The men and women there either knew each other through Jack and Jill, or through a number of prestigious private and public schools (University of Detroit, Cranbrook, Country Day, Cass Tech, Renaissance), or through a number of prestigious universities (Northwestern, University of Michigan, Harvard Law School). a couple of thoughts.. it's a reese bassline - kevin master reese saunderson.. not alex 'metalheadz' reece.. d'n'b/hardcore had reese basslines before it had alex reece.. nobody who was into d'n'b should even make this mistake or else they haven't been listening.. d'n'b has proved itself - it's influenced modern r'n'b and spawned the whole uk garage thing - personally i'm not into either, but it proves that d'n'b has influenced/inspired people - so it's music.. techno influenced d'n'b (see above) and you don't have to be into both, but you can't go around saying one thing isn't music just 'cause you're not into it.. turning your nose up at d'n'b is no better than the d'n'b people (a load of ex-ravers who discovered a few techno records round about 1993) who deserted photek when he put house tracks on the last album.. i like delsin.. the new delsin album by dimension5 is lush.. rave on kids - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://twoplayer.net/theo http://twoplayer.net/kdj _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

i`ll tell u a little secret, i have learned it in a long life of checking defenition. if u want a good defeniton of something its for sure not in the Dictionary. defetions are someting that the human reasoning needs but i am not too sure that it can be done. since any object (like let say MUSIC) is infinitive.. Anyone else check out this show? Very good show, in my opinion. The 2 opening DJ's were pretty good as well and they even had some live conga players during the sets. Very nice! The crowd, though small, was very diverse. A refreshing alternative to the Motor crowd. It seemed they went on later than they wanted too or weren't looking at the time (went on about 1:30) because when they went to do their first shout out at 2 the sound was shut down and it was "bye bye folks". [313] so is it really music?
Dictionary definition of music according to Webster (sorry the edition is a little old): 'the art and science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds or tones in varying melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre, especially so as to form structurally complete and emotionally expressive compositions' interesting third definition: 'any rhythmic sequence of pleasing sounds, as of birds, water, etc.' and: 'ability to respond to or take pleasure in music' Music does not have to be melodious. It is merely a contemplated arrangement of sounds for the purposes of communicating emotions. Believe me, debates about what is music vs. what isn't raged in my mind for quite some time during my early college years. Music is most essential when it reflects the environment and society in which it was conceived, hence, the increasing utilization of technological sounds (as an indication of industrial and intellectual advancement). The beauty is in discovering the underlying human thoughts and feelings which comprise the core of a piece and subsequently a moment in time. The subjective experience of music (art in general) protects it from the myopic qualifications which critics (amateur and professional alike) impose upon it. Our desire to create music stems from a desire to convey our deepest emotions in a way words themselves can't oblige. It is a means to transcend our physical limits. Here I will halt though I could probably compose a thesis on said subject. Comments? [313] The Future of Detroit
As some of you know, Detroit recently elected a 31 year old as mayor of Detroit. Although we are not "friends," we are colleagues of a sort...so I went to the Inaugural in order to support his installation. I wrote this essay in response...and though it is tangentially related to the list, I think the kicker at the end is directly related. Take a look...and send to others if you wish. peace lks > Lester Kenyatta Spence 314-935-5814 off > Assistant Professor 314-935-5856 fax > Washington University [EMAIL PROTECTED] > One Brookings Drive > Department of Political Science Box 1063 > St. Louis, MO. 63130-4899 > > I was blessed to be able to attend a couple of inaugural events for Kwame Kilpatrickand I've been trying to think of a way to put my feelings and thoughts on his election into words. A discussion I had last night with St. Louis' first black mayor Freeman Bosley (now a business owner and talk show host) help crystallize many of these thoughts into something that should be relatively coherent. I was lucky enough to almost literally sneak into the University of Michigan, but I got the feeling from that event that if I would have gone to Wayne St. instead, I would not have attendedor if I had attended I would not have known anyone there. As the author of "Our Kind of People" (a journalistic account of the black upper class) notes, it was indeed like the black upper class had finally gotten "their" kind of person into the mayoraltyand they came out in full force to recognize his (and their) ascension. Kilpatrick's eventseven the Ball with ticket prices at $100/headdid not have that kind of feel at all. The Michigan folks were there in full effectbut along with them I saw people representing the Shrine of the Black Madonna, the InnerCity Sub Center, the Community Coalition, and a number of other working class organizations and institutions. Furthermore, I also saw brothers and sisters who most likely didn't make it to college period much less an institution like Northwestern or Michigan. And I saw a mixture of people from the East side of the city and the West side. Now I didn't see too many white men and womenso arguably Kilpatrick's events weren't as racially integrated as that of his predecessorbut these events were definitely more integrated by class. The same vision was apparent at the club crawlall sorts of black men and women came out to see the new mayor. There were conservative lawyers dressed in Armani, there were gangsters dressed in Coogi, and a host of people in between. Truly a microcosm of Detroit came to celebrate the new mayorand it was a beautiful sight to see. The power of Detroit lies within the souls of its black folkand in these events it seemed as if the new mayor was very cognizant of this factand perhaps no more so than the end of the night of the Club Crawl event. The last DJ to perform was Biz Markiean old school hiphop head who now spends more of his time dj'ing than he does in the studio. As Biz Markie played his own most memorable song "the vapors" the mayor of the tenth largest city in Americaarguably the blackest city in North and South Americabegan to sing with the song. Until that momentI didn't know how older men and women in Detroit felt when they finally elected Coleman Young. But when I saw thatI got it. We'd finally elected one of our own. We'd truly made historynot only by electing a man with a strong working class consciousness, but electing a young man with such a consciousness. A man who, if he wasn't known, could easily fit the profile of "America's most wanted" presented daily in the papers and on tv. This was a majestic momentwhich brings me back to my conversation with Mayor Bosley. The hardest thing for Bosley was never running and winning, even though the odds were stacked against him. The hardest thing was always governanc

[313] 2001 gems
As it's still near the beginning of the year, I thought that this is still a relevant topic. Over the last few weeks there have been loads of lists in magazines, net etc. with top lists of 2001. While I don't slavishly go out and buy all the top 10 records, I do find these useful to check I haven't missed anything major which I should have bought. I bought Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein" the other day, which has turned out to be really interesting "musical" hip hop (although I'm not a big fan of the genre). Has anyone any comments on this album, or any albums which they resisted buying / didn't hear about all year, and have now bought, and recommend. In the end though if music is a feeling and you ain't feeling it it ain't music to you. Your view can however change if you are prepared to open yourself to new experiences and through practice, ie. listening, you can then train your ear to enjoy it. When you know the effort and thought that has gone into a composition you can't help but admire the individuals or person that created the piece. Question is a piece of music as valid knowing the creator/s are doing it to make a quick killing or are the struggling musicians out there the true music makers? Blimey what a heavy composition! i personally like when artists put thought into their craft... be it minimal house/tech...d'n'b or ambient...you can tell. but at other times no thought is just as good...as long as it has funky rythms!! hey alex... youre from the uk so you really should know it ,,, seems like youre a bit narrow minded bout that,,,drum n bass is music in deed, you might not like itz but you really cant say that there are only some producers that cut it,,,you should really go and look how people like optical, ed rush or bad company have pushed music and also mastering,,,just have a listen to some of their plates on your system and then play some of your own records,,,you will see what i talk about another tihng,,,you should go to a garage/2.step,,anyway called party and enjoy it,,,dont say its all crap,,be a bit more open-minded and enjoy music.. thats what i mean.. ronster -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> An: <313@hyperreal.org> Gesendet: Freitag, 25. Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers Start of message text Point taken Ken, Sorry, just was on a bit of a rant. Of course people should come here ignorant, it's a good resource for people. I just can't stand a lot of that sort of music - the boundaries between that and techno, I admit ,are blurred. It's a lot of the jokers associated with that sort of music that I have a pet hate for as well (of course, NOT ALL of them). For the record I hate Student, Puffa-Jacket wearing wanna-be bad boys as well (You know the sort, were dead into rave/happy hardcore, then found some 'credibility' with 'Jungle' and now are speed garage producers/know-it-alls) - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. RE: [313] string 'n' pad
Careful about asking 'Is it music?' almost any dance music afficionada has to ask themselves the same question in a dark night of the soul ... But for me personally, it IS music. Perhaps a new kind of music which takes the aesthetic principles of modern art and applies them to sound - CF: The Art of Noise (the name itself is a kind of manifesto, non?). Their early records could be seen as early techno, in which the potentional of Kraftwerk, Devo, etc were finally fused into as much a new way of appreciating sound as a new kind of music(That's my stock answer to 'Is it Music' anyway!). Also, I'm happy for people to come here ignorant - to educate on modern detroit dance music is what the site's meant to do, after all. Finally, sorry for preaching to those who know more than me. Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers Start of message text Ok, I'm new to this mail service, so I'm not familiar with the topics you discuss. But, surely if you subscribe to a mail service like this, you have more than a passing interest in music from Detroit? How on earth did anyone ever confuse Kevin Saunderson and Alex Reece??? I'm gobsmacked. Also Drum and Bass. A load of ex-ravers who discovered a few techno records round about 1993, what are most of 'em doing now? Speed bloody Garage, 2-Step, what ever you want to call it. Alright, there's a few D+B producers who can cut it (Photek/Dillinja?) but overall, I have to say it's bobbins, and barely worth a discussion, that music is full of people just trying to make a fast buck (I don't blame 'em for that) but really, is it 'music'? - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Wasn't Aphex's NYC debut playing sandpaper on one deck? I'm sure I read something ludicrous like that some years back? Saw Mills in Zurich late last year and after about 2 hours he looked at the admittedly lame crowd and raised his eyebrows, and probably thought "I can't be arsed with this"... he had been dropping a number of classics throughout. - Original Message - From: Odeluga, Ken <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 12:48 PM Subject: RE: [313] RE: (313) RE: (313) stacey pullen - electric relaxation > So the final verdict on DJ Pullen? :o) > > I vote yes (as in I think he's 'good'). I remember the night you're talking about although I think I was mainly in the main room for Hawtin & Aquaviva that night. I caught him the time before at The End and that was only about a month earlier. That time was the first time I heard him spin and I liked what I heard, all good dancefloor material. I imagine this style to be a more typical Pullen set, somewhere in between techno & house but all excellent tracks to dance to. After that night I remember going record shopping & looking for Stacey Pullen material as I was so impressed by what I heard. My point is really that he must have played a lounge set in the lounge, let him play in the main room and you'll get the harder side of Pullen - unless you're at Motor of course ;o) GG - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

i played drum and bass for 5 years and was pretty into that scene in Boston, where i lived at the time. other dnb head friends from coast to coast pretty much all respected adam f. but then again, most dnb people love to hate almost anyone anyway, admittedly. "colors" "metropolis" "brand new funk" were all adam f anthems, all from around the same time though. good to see he's moving on. lk On Fri, 25 Jan 2002, Odeluga, Ken wrote: > Name another Adam F classic, except Colours :o)? ... > The "Reese Bassline" that people were talking about in the jungle/dnb world > does come from Alex Reese. Does it bollocks. It comes from Kevin 'Master Reese' Saunderson - a track like 'Human Bond' is a good example of his use of the sound. Alex Reece (note correct spelling of his surname) has absolutley nothing to do with it... Cheers, Tom - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Probably been answered already but yes, it's the same Reese - (NOT Alex Reese either!) I doubt it's necessary to sample it though - it's relatively easy to produce I understand from my lil bro' with an er 808? Is it? I'm sure I'll be told. n/eway, he says only a fool would sample it - unless of course you don't have the required kit ... And of course now you have soft emulators .. definitely not worth sampling. >-Original Message- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 10:30 AM >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Cc: Niko Tzoukmanis; 313@hyperreal.org >Subject: Re: Re: [313] inside out > > > >Pardon my ignorance but the drum and bass people around 5 years ago were >all doing variations on a fat bassline sound, which they called a Reese >bassline. Re: [313] RE: (313) RE: (313) stacey pullen - electric relaxation
I was disappointed to see Stacey in the backroom of the End a year ago. It was the Plus8 night with Mr C, Hawtin and Acquaviva in the other room. Stacey was playing a slow jamming house set and more or less sitting down. I was gutted at this point because I had gone all the way to see him especially. I remember seeing him in 95-97 play sets at Voodoo and he was tearing it up. Very different style of djing, all top end mixing so it was like a watery sound just like his album in parts. This is a lot harder to mix like this as you can notice when the hats start to go out quicker than a kick but he was always premier league. Maybe he hasn't felt the need to perform as hard these days or suffering from a change in direction but I certainly wouldn't write him off. Fair enough though if you have seen him 4 times and he hasn't delivered for u. - Original Message - From: :P <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org>; Niko Tzoukmanis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 2:31 AM Subject: Re: [313] RE: (313) RE: (313) stacey pullen - electric relaxation > is Staceys release work good? > > his the shittiest DJ I've even gone to see 3-4 times > > -Joe > > -- >R17 is not a fixed velocity, but it is clearly far too fast. > -- > - Original Message - > From: "Niko Tzoukmanis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <313@hyperreal.org> > Sent: Thursday, January 24, 2002 7:43 AM > Subject: RE: [313] RE: (313) RE: (313) stacey pullen - electric relaxation > > > > r&s still exists, latest releases afaik is > > air frog 'bon voyage' with a remix by... > > stacey pullen ;O) > > > > At 12:41 24.01.02 -, you wrote: > > >Wow, the end of an era then. [313] The Reese bass
HmI believe I stand corrected here, although I would like some clarification on this. So the "Reese Bass" that was used in Jungle/DNB back in 1994 was sampled from Kev Saundy? I did some searching and this appears to be the case, however, is it just a coincidence that Alex Reese was floating around at this time in Jungle/DNB, and he had nothing to do with it? That's really odd, because everyone I have ever known in the jungle/dnb scene has thought the "Reese Bass" comes from Alex Reese... Re: Re: [313] inside out
also there is a Samuel L. Session record, I thnk Cycle number one. On it there is a typical Reese sounding tune. The best for me though is the 100 not out ep by DJ Q on Filter records. It has been appropriately described as the best Kevin Saunderson tune not to be done by Kevin Saunderson. I had it but some bastard switched it at a gig once - it's that good. - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: Niko Tzoukmanis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 10:30 AM Subject: Re: Re: [313] inside out Pardon my ignorance but the drum and bass people around 5 years ago were all doing variations on a fat bassline sound, which they called a Reese bassline. The "Reese Bassline" that people were talking about in the jungle/dnb world does come from Alex Reese. I don't know if Kev Saundy ever made a bassline that was called the "Reese", but that is irrelavent, that's not what they were talking about. No, you're right... I think the track in question is Reese "Just Want Another Chance", originally released on Incognito. on 1/25/02 5:30 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > Pardon my ignorance but the drum and bass people around 5 years ago were > all doing variations on a fat bassline sound, which they called a Reese > bassline.
