Re: Corrupt NVRAM?

2005-06-13 Thread Graham Welland
I would fully expect that your battery is beyond rejuvenation if it's been
used full time as a desktop. In general I recommend to folks to remove the
battery from the machine if it's likely to be used in this way as it kills
batteries in my experience. A new/spare battery needn't be that expensive or
hard to find.

It would probably be well worth resetting your NVRAM anyway - you've got
nothing to lose so long as you are on power.

Re: Windows characters??

2005-06-13 Thread sacear3

John, or jb (if you prefer):

The Text Encoding setting in your email program needs to be changed.
The setting seems to be set to "windows-1252" and needs to be set to
"ISO-8859-1." If you are using Mail, then Text Encoding is the last
item under the Message menu. Set it to Default.

Also, this list will not accept Rich Text Format (rtf). I think it
accepts Plain Text only. Under the Format menu select Make Plain Text
before sending.

Hope that helps.

Re: intel inside stickers and Apple branding (was "Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!")

2005-06-13 Thread sacear3

Bruce,

That was a good article, thanks for posting that link. Which company
will benefit from branding is interesting to think about. I think both
can benefit if they respect each other and not try to rip each other
off (and not put "intel inside" stickers on the front or top of Macs!).
Which brings up a question: Would Mac buyers settle for the Intel
sticker on the back or bottom of a Mac or PowerBook? How about on the
cardboard packing box?

I have been reading about Intel's new CEO Paul Otellini the past week.
From what I have read he seems like a forward looking person with
positive attitude and energy. Seems he has been courting Apple at least
as long as IBM and Freescale have been messing up and stringing Apple
along. Hopefully Mr. Otellini's positive attributes will spread
throughout Intel. On paper, Otellini seems to be a good fit for a
partnership with Steve Jobs and Apple. So, time will tell and we will
see.

Also, you bring up a good point, why do people leave all those stickers
on their computers? Are they some sort of badge of honor? More like
badges of courage on Windows machines! :-)

Best regards,
Scott

There's an article discussing this on Forbes' site today:

They point out that Apple has a higher brand recognition than Intel
does, that Intel may be getting more attention from their association

I really don't think that we're going to be seeing 'Intel Inside'

But the 'looking like race cars' thing makes me chuckle. I see more
Windows laptops come through with ALL the myriad of stickers they
have plastered all over them when they're sold. It's as if people

Corrupt NVRAM?

2005-06-13 Thread dan_A

Hi Listas

I have Ti-Book 800MHz with 1gig of RAM, and a 155 GB firewire hd
attached. I'm running 10.4.1. I've been using this machine as a
desktop unit, always on and plugged in. I probably killed the battery
that way but ever since I installed Tiger, I can't restart or shut
down without forcing those functions. I unplugged the charger to see
how long the battery would go for... the battery shows 98% to 100%
charge all the time... but when I unplug the charger I get about 7
minutes of battery time and then it reads 0. I'm wondering if these 2
symptoms indicate corrupted NVRAM. The fact that it no longer
completes a shutdown is what makes me think so. The battery may still
have some ability to recharge if I reset the PMU. Anyone have any
thoughts on this? Thanks for your thoughts.

If the printer driver is some kind of network kernel extension, then the
version for 10.3 won't work with 10.4 because Apple made some changes to the
network kernel API and drivers have to be modified to work properly under
10.4. I'm not saying that this is the problem, but it could be and, in this

Re: DSL and storms

2005-06-13 Thread Pacer

My Fellow PowerBook-philes and Tim,

Cable Modems would be nice if only we did not have one of the worst
iterations of the Comcast Empire where I live. It was formerly known as
MediaOne, then later as AT&T Cable and Broadband. MediaOne has the
dubioius distinction of having the poorest customer service rating of
any cable company ever. Ever. It was fantastic. Man I still shudder
about MediaOne.

Regardless, I will be moving to Birmingham, AL which only has Charter I
understand. I had to deal with them in Athens, GA. They are not as
technically savvy as Comcast, nor do they know how to run networks in
general, plus they do not have as many nifty features, but goodness ...
it's like the difference between Sun and Microsoft in cultures. Sure,
I'd prefer a Linux or Apple kind of culture, but at least it isn't an
uncaring empire.

On an aside: Apparently Paul Allen does have a stake in Charter. Eh.

Still, business lines are expensive so I won't be able to run any nifty
home-made servers from leftover computers running everything from
NetBSD, OS 8.5 to RedHat 9. I plan on getting the DreamCast an Ethernet
adapter and turning it into something That oughta be funny. If my
Mac SE had a larger hard drive I might even network it (G)

Good luck with y'alls DSL and/or Cable Modems and watch out for the
lightning! :-)

Sincerely,
Pacer the Loon

2 Question - DVD drives & VGA video out.

2005-06-13 Thread elhadley

Hello folks,

I have two iBooks. One is an iBook SE (466mhz graphite) with a DVD rom.
[It has been a real workhorse - a great computer.] The other is a newer
12" iBook (1 mhz) with a cd rom [last years model] that I bought from
my Big U's Micro Order Center for a song and a dance. I needed a newer
machine and this one presented itself at a price I could not refuse
even if it did not have all of the options I would really liked to have
had.

I have a couple of questions regarding my iBooks.
The questions are these...
In regards to the older 466 mhz iBook. Is there a device that would
allow me to convert the composite video to VGA video?

I would like to turn it into my living room/DVD player/game computer.
But it does not support VGA video out. I have an old Apple 17" Studio
(B&W) monitor on which I would like to display the video and games.

In regards to the newer 12" iBook... Is it possible to replace the CD
rom with a DVD rom or DVD-RW? i.e. Do the DVD drives require some
hardware that the CD rom iBook would not have built in? And/or is it
just not worth the trouble??

Thanks in advance for any info or advice you might have. - Edli

There's an article discussing this on Forbes' site today:

I really don't think that we're going to be seeing 'Intel Inside'

But the 'looking like race cars' thing makes me chuckle. I see more

have plastered all over them when they're sold. It's as if people

developers, but it's definitely the right move to make.

It seems to me that for many of us the big question is about our
investment in software, and whether buying a new x86 machine may be
the least expensive part of a change.

That is, repurchasing some - or much - of our accumulated software
in a version that has been recently translated from PPC code to x86
code could be far more expensive than shelling out $2k-$3k for a
new machine. I can see this as an opportunity for many software
developers and publishers to resell the same title to those who
need it for some cost either equal to or somewhat less than the
cost of that same title when purchased new.

Rosetta is going to make that transition a lot easier than you might
think, depending on the app.

Yeah, it will depend on the developer, and where they are in their
own upgrade cycles. Look at Adobe for example: getting the OS X-
compatible version of Photoshop cost the same as an upgrade...because
it WAS an upgrade, from Version 6 to Version 7.

I expect the response of developers to run the gamut between 'here
download the X86 version for free' to 'pay $19.95 for a cd of the
universal version' to 'upgrade to version N+1 Of Bloowats
confabulator for $149' to 'I'm sorry, but Quark is not yet finished
evaluating the commmittee selection to determine the X86 porting
schedule team membership.'

This is a disruptive change, but believe it or not, most developers
don't want to piss off their customers. They're not seeing this and
gloating 'A Ha! I can fleece the suckers for another full-price copy,
Bwahahahahaha!'

An app that merely takes a recompile to port is going to bring on
nothing more than media costs for companies to make the switch; this
is far less of a change than 68K to PPC or OS 9 to OS X.

OS X.4 DVD on Wallstreet II

2005-06-13 Thread Michael Dolberry
I have been playing around with upgrading to X.4 on my
Wallstreets, using the new XPostFacto4. But I have run
into a snag.

I suspect that it is hopeless, but just wanted to
check.

Using the new XPostFacto 4, I can load the software
and recognize the DVD, even in OS 10.2. But when it
tries to load from the DVD at restart, it keeps
waiting for data, which the help site interprets as
"Not able to read the media".

I know that the DVD-decoder is not supposed to work in
OS X, but it appears to work in OS X.2. (I guess I
need to try to watch a movie and see.)

Does anyone have any further ideas or information, or
possibly a work-around which doesn't involve swapping
the drive? I can't try firewire mode. No firewire.

Just curious, before I tell the wife and teen, it's a
NO GO.

Shel

Re: Universities, IT, Networks and Laptops: Was "Is Apple really moving to x86 architecture?!"

2005-06-13 Thread Bruce Johnson

On Jun 12, 2005, at 6:59 PM, Pacer wrote:

My Fellow PowerBook-philes and 'david',

This is interesting to me. Firstly, I am curious as to how the
"network" at your University is run. At my alma mater they had a
network which consisted of multiple layers and multiple input/
outputs to and from the WAN.

Ka-snippo.

You've pretty much described the University of Arizona network to a
tee, except we never experimented with the cable modems at Resnet;
the dorms have been wired, mostly, since the late 90's.

Our campus e-mail has 30-40 thousand accounts, is run on a cluster of
IBM servers running AIX, using IMAP and other OSS software, like
Horde and Spam Assasin.

The campus network evolved as a whole bunch of independent networks,
we've still got the Netmanagers group, an anarchic bunch of sysadmins
on campus who run different parts, some on a college level, like us,
some on a department level. It grew this way because network use was
adopted by different departments at a much different rate.

(how anarchic? The Netmanagers has always been an unofficial group;
on the order of an ad hoc users group, though we're probably one of
the most respected voices for IT on campus, the Administration and
Faculty do listen to us.

The last president of the group (not coincidentally a big MS
oriented, Central Control freak type) tried to get us recognized as
official, with a budget, official representation on campus the works
(or as I joked in one of the MANY e-mails debating the issue on the
official mailing list) 'shiny lame uniforms, a snazzy decoder ring
and a secret handshake, too' . Well no question on which side I was
on ;-)

We all met and by a large margin voted *against* giving ourselves
more power on Campus.

THAT'S anarchy in action!)

The main campus Systems folks provide the central backbone, and
campus-wide services, and support to the jack for most places. We're
one of the few bits of the campus that still control our own networks
in the phone closets, mostly out of inertia than anything else. In
our new building CCIT is taking that over. Hooray, no more time spent
in a stale phone closet trying to track one wire through a rats nest
to a half-dozen switches.

It a system that works, it's raucous sometimes, inefficient at
others, but it's an extraordinarily resilient and stable network.

Arizona State in Phoenix runs their network much differently.

(Old joke: "Q: How do you get the ASU grad off your porch? A: Pay for
the pizza." ;-)

They've got a far more rigid campus wide-LAN, all Microsoft-Centric,
full Exchange server, the works. It's a mighty fortress.

They've also been crushed to the ground by all the big nasties to
come around over the last few years; we survived Melissa, Code Red,
Nimda, etc the Great Virus Wars of '02 reasonably unscathed, since
our network design allows for the central computing folks who only
have to really control the routers, to quickly disconnect problematic
hosts form the network.

I'm a firm believer in the decentralized network model.

It also means we have a significant Mac presence on campus.

The whole laptop for everyone thing is another interesting idea to
me. Honestly, I don't think laptops add much to a class if they
add anything at all. I mean, sure they could be nice, but honestly
it is more likely the student is playing solitaire while bored than
trying to pay attention.

Oh, please, that's what universal WiFi is for; surfing the web is far
more fun than solitaire. ;-)

My take is that the 'every student must have a laptop' is a solution
without a problem, and a damned lucrative one, too, for whoever snags
the contract to supply them.

When they become coercive: "No system other than ours is allowed on
Campus" it's bad.

have to be returned when the real X86 macs ship, from what I've read.)

Their development software, as always, is entirely free. Go to
Apple's site and download it.

2005-06-13 Thread Andrea Stansbury
Heh. I agree totally. It's nothing that terribly exciting. And I
don't think that Apple is stupid enough to do something that would
completely ostracize their loyal users like the people on this list.
I'm sure things will be just the same and with any luck you won't even
notice the difference when the new Macs come out.

Try to think of it this way. All our PowerPC based apples are going to
be collector's items sooner than we thought. :)

And, no, the sky is not falling. But perhaps the world *is* ending.

Re: BeOS and G-Books...

2005-06-13 Thread Andrea Stansbury
I have never tried it myself. But I have seen it on my brother's PC as
a dual operating system. I believe he got rid of it. I was a novelty
for him. I would be interested in seeing if I could get my apple to
run BeOS. But then again, what's available for that platform? As you
can see I know little to nothing about it except that it exists and
looks cool.

I think at the least it would be amusing. Besides, might breathe some

Not sure which version to try, though. Hmmm.

Maybe I'll just go buy an old, used G3 PowerMac to try it all on.

subject line as well.

Anyway, what I meant about the viruses is that I do in fact know that
this move to Intel is good for Apple. But, I'm afraid it might be
too good. I'm one of those unusual Mac users that LIKES being a part
of a small community. I LIKE the fact that Apple has a small market
share. I enjoy watching PeeCee users getting jealous over Apple's
technology, only to get it eventually when PC manufacturers try to
copy it. Everyone keeps saying this is good for Apple, etc. Yea,
sure it's good. . .and the bigger the market share, the more we are
gonna attract hackers. I know the power of Mac OS X (trying not to
sound like Darth Vader); it's almost impossible to create an
effective system debilitating virus TO DATE. But, the bigger the
crowd, the more people are going to notice. I hope everyone can see
my point.

I need to formerly apologize to those who use PC's and are members of
this list. I work with all types of computers in my business. I
customize wireless networks, create systems for people; both PC and
Mac. I just had a very bad experience with someone who drove me
crazy with his PC. Let's just say he's the one who's stupid. . .and
that some people should not have a computer AT ALL. I strive to be
patient, but for some reason I vented in here. . .my sacred ground
with folks who not only know as much as I do about Linux, Be OS,
Amiga OS, Mac OS, Windows and Unix, but even more than ME. :)

Also, the useful info regarding the Alpha chip is actually exciting.
Is this true? Are the former employees from DEC really working for
Intel?! I'm throughly aware of the Alpha chip and it had a lot of
potential. I could only imagine what those folks, with Intel's
budget, could create for Apple. Everyone's going to want a Mac!
(biting nails) I just hope I'm wrong and the market share won't go
any higher than 30% in the next 10 years. Oh for those who own Apple
stock and are cringing at what I just typed. . .I have stock as well.
 :)

Keepin' it small. . .(like a secret club, folks!)

Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!

2005-06-13 Thread david

The jury's still out on exactly what they'll do with the chipset,
whether it'll be a standard Intel type or custom-made for Apple,

ordinary PC hardware.

This is one of the big questions - there's even been talk that Intel
would do the motherboard design for Apple. My track record of second
guessing Apple is only so-so but I can't see Apple totally walking
away from the hardware design of their computers. I can, however, see
Apple working *with* Intel. I'm also guessing that the chipset will
be far enough removed from the standard Wintel chipset that it will
require more than a little software hacking to run OS X on a Dell.

Personally, I'm looking forward to replacing my 1.67GHz PowerBook
with something roughly 3 times as fast (if what I've been hearing
about OS X performance on the developer boxes is correct) in about
a year's time. The transition will be a headache for a lot of
developers, but it's definitely the right move to make.

It will be interesting to see how OS X performs on Intel - it will
especially be interesting to compare WinXP to OS X on very similar
hardware. I'm currently using a Dell notebook at the university and
it is quite impressive (although I know bit rot will eventually set
in and at some point a virus is going to get past the barrier or some
piece of malware will be implanted and then I'll want to throw it
across the room). This is the first Windows notebook I've used that I
could consider using full time - I've felt that way about PowerBooks
since my first iBook. That it isn't significantly slower than my
desktop is important but what I particularly like is how frugal it is
with the battery. And that is why I'm excited about the switch. Once
again I'll be able to own a PowerBook that can go all day without
being tethered.

Print sharing via Airport snow

2005-06-13 Thread Frank Cornew
Was able to resucitate an abandoned ABS snow that had its WAN port
fried. Spotted a fried surface mount resistor with my trusty loupe
and got it going again.

Am thrilled with the USB print sharing that is very simple and
reliable out of the ABS USB port. Used to wait until returning to
office for printing. Am using a Pismo running tiger to print
wirelessly to an Epson 740.

Is there any chance of printing to the Epson from my OS 9.2.2 desktop
machine hardwired to the ABS LAN port?

Thanks much.
F.

I think my Pismo needs some fine tuning. . .

2005-06-13 Thread Zoltan Batiz

Hello all,

My Pismo has been acting a little "sketchy" lately. That's the best
way to describe it. Basically, all of the animations in OS X that are
normally smooth and sleek, are now jumpy and quick. Not sure what's up
here. Maybe I'm being too picky? Maybe the hard drive is snagging?
I'm not too sure yet. Example: In Safari, when you select Print, the
window kinda "rolls" down. . .now it just "pops" down instantly. . .no
roll anymore. Any ideas? I'm running 10.3.9 with a gig of RAM and a
G3/500. Thanks for any input,

Zoltan
