[MBZ] Looking to upgrade next spring.

2005-11-08 Thread Brian Baker
I would like to upgrade next spring to a newer diesel Benz. Say like an '84
300D or similar. My current 240D may soon be offered for sale, (see the map
for Harrisburg MO. for picture.)
Looking also to upgrade from the w123 body.
Contact me offlist if you want details on the 240D.

Re: [MBZ] 240d shutoff follies

2005-11-08 Thread Peter Frederick
Connect a vac line from a known good source directly to the shutoff
with the engine running. If it doesn't stop instantly, the diapram is
shot, replace it.

You should also check for vac at the servo line with the key out,
engine running -- if you have good vac in the hose, the diaphram is
shot. If you don't have vac, check for cracks in the plastic lines,
they do get brittle with age. Also check for plugs in the connection
for the brown vac line to the main vac line -- if that orifice plugs,
it won't shut off. Don't drill it out, it's fairly small.

If there is oil in the brown with blue stripe line from the shutoff,
for sure the diaphram is gone.

Well congrats on the new XT. I was looking at a Forester XT a couple

I just took a look at your 1937 Buick. That's one sweet jalopy. I may

I've found very little difference with turbodiesels. They are optimized
for higher engine speeds. The normally aspirated models get better
mileage when driven in the 40-55 mph range and that drops dramatically
as speeds exceed about 65-70 mph.

If you're getting 34 mpg on the highway, that's absolutely normal. Best
I've ever done with my 190D 2.5t (same engine in a car that weighs at
most 5% less) is ~38 mpg, but 33-34 is much more usual. As winter fuel
becomes the norm, fuel economy WILL drop (10-15%).

Not disagreeing with your major premise, but fuel
filters are a normal thing to change. The primer pump
leaked like a seive before (when pumping) so that was
a nice upgrade. The line under the braided
hose...well, who knows, it was probably 30 years old.

I imagine I will eventually toast the IP with my
experimentation...but the seats may drop through the
rusted body before that happens, so might as well save
some fuel money before the rust gets me.

Note, I do not do this with the SD or TD.

ALSO, Is there supposed to be an Aluminum crush washer
on the bolt that holds the top of the fuel filter on
(76 240D)?...there was not one there, so I improvised
with a thin plasticky-rubbery washer till I can get a
new one, if it is indeed supposed to be there.

Thanks,

Chris

Good Day fellow listers,

The demise of my 1988 300TE at the hands of a 16yr old wielding a SUV

contributors to this decision were the extraordinary performance of

I do intend to remain a member of this list community, as I enjoy the

A complete '85 OM617.95 engine transmission would drop pretty well in,
but the electrics, fuel supply and cooling system would require some
effort. If you had two cars side by side it might not be too difficult.
But to collect all the needed parts before the fact would be VERY
challenging. The newer engines ('86-'87 OM603.96/OM603.97 engines) would
be even more of a challenge and might require major structural alterations!

[MBZ] Trip report - first drive, Raleigh to Boston

2005-11-08 Thread Lee Levitt
So I flew down to Raleigh on Saturday to retrive my new '93 300E td.

Next time, please remind me to buy a car from an enthusiast, not a lady who
doesn't know how to service a car properly. Service records were spotty,
from 3 different shops.

The trip was entirely uneventful, aside from a minor issue with the cig
lighter. I saw one cop between Raleigh and Boston. It was a beautiful day
for a drive, although the route was somewhat boring. I didn't get right on
95...instead, I headed west and picked up 85, which met up with 95 in VA.
There was some traffic in the DC area, most of it heading south. I don't
remember having driven past the Pentagon before, and the sight of it brought
back powerful memories of September 11. My best friend worked on Wall Street
and I couldn't reach him for 3 days afterwards...

So it's a nice car. It *does* have heated seats and I think it has an
antislip differential (ASD). *Something* kicked in and gave me a warning on
the dash when I fishtailed on some wet leaves. So I'm pretty sure it does
have ASD. It does have an idiot light marked ASD at the bottom of the IC,
and a separate warning light in the tach that illuminated that one time.

It also has a couple of good sized door dings and a crinkle in the rf
fender, all of which *may* be removable by a good dentwizard.

Tires are shot, failed inspection today because they're so bad...and to
think I cruised 700 miles on them averaging 80...I'll be replacing them next
week with a set of 4 Nokian RSi snow tires.

Anyone need a set of OE freshly painted 15" stock wheels with bad tires?

Good solid car overall. *Really* soft, I was surprised how soft the
suspension is. Runs pretty good, seems to have good power. I averaged 34 mpg
from Raleigh to Boston, running at about 75-80 the whole way!

CD changer is screwed -- it goes silent every so often and then comes
back...but it still reads the cd and track on the radio. One of the stop
lights is out, and it's not the bulb.

The previous owner had one of the taillight consoles replaced a couple of
weeks ago...looks like the other one shit the bed.

When I got in the car in Raleigh, I plugged in my CB, my V1 and my portable
Nav (Garmin Quest 2)...then I found that the cigarette lighter had no power.
I drove for a while deaf, dumb and blind, then found that some other things
weren't working either. So I pulled over, found the fuse box and found that
a fuse was blown. Doh. Replaced it and everything came back.

The car is a long legged runner...it really eats up the miles. Comfortable
too.

I've got a set of euro lamps coming from ebay.de for $150. I'm pretty sure
they're Bosch OEM...which will help at night. Stock lighting sucks.

My mechanic, who owned an '88 300E for a long while, said that these things
*really* suck in the snow...even with good snow tires. I'm putting a set of
Nokians on next week...hopefully he's wrong, but we'll see. If it really is
that bad, I'll pick up a cheap quattro for winter use.

Anyway, I'm enjoying tooling around in this beast...it's quite different
from anything I've owned before, except perhaps my old Volvo 122S with 60K
miles on it...I think it feels a bit like that...

By the way, my last car was an '02 Audi A6 quattro wagon with a sport
suspension and 17" wheels, and the car before that was a '95 Audi S6 avant
(lowered, Bilsteins, 17" wheels, etc). So I'm not really used to "soft"
suspensions...

I ordered parts for my wife's Toyota from Conicelli Toyota in Pennsylvania
very recently. Box was retrieved from the local postal outlet yesterday, as
no one was home when they tried to deliver it. Postage on the box was about
(don't have it right here so cannot look to verify exact amount) $18 US.
They charged me $16 US for shipping so it may well be that the amount being
charged is fair or even more than fair. Not always crooks trying to take
advantage.

Re: [MBZ] cycling hot/cold in 90's w124 300TDt

2005-11-08 Thread John M McIntosh
First running the dial on the right side 5-7C colder (seems) to
regulate things a bit.

So I wired up some benz pins/sockets, after doing the relays for my
500E headlights I've a few wires and pins about.
Check for connectivity, then cross connected the two solenoids. The
hot air then switches to the driver's side from the passenger side.

This seems to indicate the $300+ duo-valve assembly is working and
the signal it is receiving is bad. So either the control unit is bad,
or one of the temp sensors in the left/right heater box is bad.

The temp sensors are $20 each, could I ordered a pair and we'll look
into replacing them. It still could be the potentiometers on the
dials or the control unit, I guess I could disassemble the console
and test them, then find they are bad, reassemble, disassemble
(sigh). Er no it's a bitch to
reassemble the console and align and retighten everything based on
my last experience, plus all the plastic whimpers break me, so
we'll just order them.

On 6-Nov-05, at 5:40 PM, John M McIntosh wrote:

Mmmm I wonder if I can swap the female connectors or reverse the
connector. That would tell me if the control unit signal
is flake if the swap alters the behaviour from side to side.

Well the connector is specifically designed to disable anyone from
casually or even forcefully
connecting backward. The little plastic tabs scream, touch me and
I'll snap off so I won't rewire it.

Tomorrow I'll visit radio shack and gets some alligator clips and
wire and cross connect things
and see what happens.

That and run the temp dial 5-7 C colder on the right and see if
anything changes.

Re: [MBZ] OT 9cyl radial diesel aircraft engine

2005-11-08 Thread Woodlandtaylors
Rory,

The cartridge starter that I'm familiar with were used or Rolls Royce Avon
turbine engines. Basically a very large shotgun shell to look at and
starters came in single shot or 3 shot configurations. When released (fired)
it drove a double planetary gear train that in turn rolled the engine over
for starting. Every now and turn as the starter accelerated to ~ 45,000 Rpm
it would come apart and be swallowed by the compressor section of the
starting turbine destroying the engine.

Its purpose was to self contained, needing no ground support to start the
engine. Used on old Canberra Bombers don not remember what else.

Link http://www.bywat.co.uk/austral1.html shows starter in use as does

Bob,
I love mine. The ad doesn't mention any of the major issues with the 1995
vintage 124's though. I'd want to make absolutely sure the A/C was
operational. These are prone to evaporator leaks (to the tune of 14-15
hours

of labor to replace), self-destructing engine wiring harnesses (3-4 hours
labor + $900 part), plugged EGR tubes, bad ignition coils, etc.
Once these issues are sorted out, though, I thoroughly enjoy driving them.
I'd say if the A/C is good and cold, you can't smell refrigerant/oil in
the

passenger compartment from a leaky evap, and it idles smoothly, it's worth
taking a serious look at. The price is certainly right.
My seats look only slightly better than thos in the ad. I've kept an eye
out for some seats in better shape, but haven't found anything yet.
Replacement leather is .

LOL!

It was owned by a little old Texan lady who had her son-in-law
transport it to Ontario so that she could drive it here when she came
to visit. It was from her that I bought it, but through him. I
actually spoke to her on the phone one evening to make sure the sale
was legit. She was a nice lady who gave me some good conversation.

It was never registered here because the Texas insurance was much
better. I, obviously, couldn't make use of that loophole.

First remove the lower cushion by depressing the two orange tabs and
lifting it straight out. In the lower corner of the backrest you'll
see an 8mm bolt on each side, and there's another one underneath and
behind the center armrest. Once they're removed you can pull upward on
the backrest to remove it. The headrests need to be lowered though.

This 240D doesn't have any rust (Oregon car), but it does need a radiator

The transmission overload protection circuit you describe was eliminated
when Mercedes changed from the 722.1 series to the 722.3 series
transmissions in 1981. I believe that coincided with the US delivered
"S" class cars migrating from W116 to W126 chassis, but there may have
been some European 126s that had 722.1 transmissions.

I quote from 7.1-015 of the 617.95 engine manual: "Starting model year
1981, installation of transmission 722.303 instead of 722.120 has made
the transmission overload protection unnecessary. Only engine overload
protection will be installed."

Your 1982 126.120 does NOT have the circuit you are describing! There is
overboost protection if the sensor on the intake manifold senses
pressure in excess of about 1 bar.

Marshall

If the pressure line is disconnected, then boost pressure will not reach
the ALDA and there will never be ANY fuel enrichment (when the ALDA is
open to the atmosphere all it can do is act as an ADA and reduce fuel
flow as altitude increases and therefore atmospheric pressure
decreases). That limits the engine to 88 hp or less at altitudes above
sea level (vs 120 hp with full enrichment).

It's fun. This one was $300, then my friend put $450
into it, then I bought it from him for $500 and put
new tires and had the rear windshield installed
(replacement windshield came with car, but in the back
seat). It's got serious rust issues, but it will
shortly pay for itself in fuel savings and I am
learning alot in the mean time. I can take as long as
I need to work on it as the SD and TD are daily
drivers for my wife and I...this can sit on jacks for
a month if need be and I take my time, post questions,
drink beer, smoke and do alot of staring while
thinking "there has to be an easier way"...usually
there isn't.

Good luck.

P.S. Not sure how you plan on filtering, but I am
gonna switch to simple filter bags. Hang them over a
drum or 5 gallon buckets and that's it. SIMPLE is the
name of the game or else it get's tedious.

Please keep me updated, Kevin. Oh, and always err on
the side of a thin mixture...too thick will screw up
the IP quickly.

Good point, Dave. For what it's worth, though, my #17 that blew
definitely did so on its own, so to speak---not because of
overheating. The car overheated routinely after the head cracked, but
not before, and once the head was replaced it ran perfectly
again---i.e. the cooling system was NOT the culprit. Pity I don't
have much maintenance history on the car. I don't know exactly when
the original head was replaced, nor when the trap oxidizer recall was
done. If there was an overlap, we could blame the trap for the #17
cracking.

On 11/7/05, Dave M. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Before condemning the #17+ heads, you need to know the details behind
the failure (re: that SDL with a bunch of cracks in a '17.) Blowing a

coolant in the system will likely crack a #22 head also.

All heads CAN crack - even old iron heads. I've seen a small number of
OM601 and 602 heads (maybe about as many as OM61x heads) that have
cracked. The cracks look just like cracks in 603 heads - they crack in
the same places (around prechamber and valve ports mostly). They
represent a TINY fraction (<1%) of the number of 601/602 heads produced
(vs maybe 20% of the heads from '86-'87 603 engines). Most crack because
they are abused some way. Aluminum heads expand and contract FAR more in
response to heating/cooling than iron heads and because of that, require
that additional measures be taken to compensate for that activity. There
is evidence that aside from the heat stress of a trap oxidizer plugging
up, SOME of the cracking problem resulted from the design of the head
gaskets used before the the late '80s. Mercedes also redesigned the head
itself - several times. A few certainly cracked because they were flawed
in the manufacturing process. One problem with the introduction of
aluminum heads was that they couldn't be magnafluxed as iron heads could
to reveal flaws. That left pressure testing as about the only practical
method for testing in the field and Mercedes acknowledges in the engine
manual that even heads that pass the pressure test may still be flawed
and fail once installed.

TimothyPilgrim wrote:

But what is the intended outcome? What's the benefit?

An EGR routes exhaust (soot and all) back into the air intake in low
engine power situations. This reduces combustion temperatures and
reduces the formation of oxides of nitrogen. It also reduces combustion
efficiency, increases fuel consumption and increases particulate/soot
production. Most older ('80s or older) Mercedes turbodiesels with a
working EGR feel a little sluggish at low speeds and (especially if
largely city driven) develop considerable soot accumulation in the
intake air path. When soot accumulation becomes sufficient, the pressure
path from the intake manifold to the ALDA is eventually blocked so that
fuel enrichment is inhibited or prevented and engine power can be
limited to about 70% of rating (a 120 hp turbo engine is limited to
about 80 hp).

Because there is no enrichment circuit on non-turbo engines, EGR
operation is much less detrimental (but the air intake path will
eventually become choked and that can cause a detectable power loss).

By disabling the EGR, soot from the exhaust is no longer redirected thru
the air intake path so there's no soot to accumulate, combustion
efficiency is preserved, particulate content of the exhaust is reduced
dramatically, BUT NOx output increases a bit.

The decrease in NOx that the EGR provides for Mercedes diesels is rather
modest. Last time I researched it, it was claimed that most Mercedes
diesel engines even without a working EGR produce less NOx than most
gasoline engines (with ALL of their emissions controls working, but just
a little below peak efficiency) that are more than a few years old.
Still, without the EGR, they will not meet current emissions standards
for new cars so can't be sold in the US.

I believe that the oxidation CAT used on the later OM60x engines reduces
NOx.

Bob,
I love mine. The ad doesn't mention any of the major issues with the 1995
vintage 124's though. I'd want to make absolutely sure the A/C was
operational. These are prone to evaporator leaks (to the tune of 14-15 hours
of labor to replace), self-destructing engine wiring harnesses (3-4 hours
labor + $900 part), plugged EGR tubes, bad ignition coils, etc.
Once these issues are sorted out, though, I thoroughly enjoy driving them.
I'd say if the A/C is good and cold, you can't smell refrigerant/oil in the
passenger compartment from a leaky evap, and it idles smoothly, it's worth
taking a serious look at. The price is certainly right.
My seats look only slightly better than thos in the ad. I've kept an eye
out for some seats in better shape, but haven't found anything yet.
Replacement leather is .

[MBZ] Overload swithover valve, OM 917.951 engine

2005-11-08 Thread Hans Neureiter
I found the tube from the intake manifold to the O/L switchover valve
disconnected.
Reading the ALDA functional description I am somewhat confused.
The way I interpret this gets me to the following conclusion:
The overload protection switchover valve vents the ALDA to atm. when RPM is
below 2000 and the gauge pressure in the manifold is below a certain amount
(0.5 bar ?), thus cutting off fuel enrichment.
The ALDA regulates and limits total boost pressure in the manifold (gauge +
atm.) to a set value by adjusting the fuel enrichment.
So, with the tube from the manifold disconnected and open to atm., the ALDA
cuts off all fuel enrichment below 2000 RPM and goes to full enrichment
above this ?
I can't tell what a difference this correction made by itself, because it
was during a badly needed valve adjustment job. Every single valve was way
to tight. Some intakes didn't let a .001" feeler gage slip in.
The car now now nearly out drags the E300D.
One other question. I replaced a bad O-ring at the modulator and the leak
there stopped. But there are still ATF drips on the ground. Where is another
probable source for a leak near the front on these transmissions. I can't

lines from the key switch running through the fork. Still no shutoff.

I pulled the cluster and visually inspected the connections into the key
switch. They are fine.

Any suggestions where I go next? When this happened on my old diesels it was
always the vacuum shutoff diaphragm at the pump, so I've never got into this
before.

[MBZ] AKP-Wagen & massive oil loss

2005-11-08 Thread Christopher McCann
some may recall my runningout of oil a while back.
Figured this one out too. Once the car started, it was
obvious that something was quite wrong - the breather
hose comes off the valve cover then goes into a T. the
bottom of the T looks like it goes back to the
crankcase (?) and it is leaking. THe other end of the
T goes to the intake boot off the air cleaner - it was
gone...splattering some, but not alot of oil. Over
time, these two things together, I believe, would run
the oil down much faster than normal, especially on a
high miles engine. New T and hose to be ordered today. :-)

Re: [MBZ] OT 9cyl radial diesel aircraft engine

2005-11-08 Thread Chuck Landenberger
The only date in the article is noted below April 1940 when
''A.T.C. No 220 was issued"

The official flight tests for the C.A.A. were completed
satisfactorily and on one of the flights an altitude of 18,300 ft.
was attained with the airplane still climbing at the rate of 500 ft.
per min. This altitude compares very favourably with the ceiling of
14,500 ft. guaranteed for the gasoline-engined Stinson and indicates
that a ceiling of at least 20,000 ft. could be attained by the Diesel-
engined Stinson without supercharging. A.T.C. No. 220 was issued for
the Guiberson A-1020 Diesel aircraft engine in April, 1940, giving it
a continuous rating of 310 h.p. at 2,150 r.p.m. at sea-level.

Hi, All.
On my 87 190Dt, I repaired the leaky EGR with an aluminum gasket about one

They don't give a date of when the engine was developed and used, but a

For a cost of $3.00/gallon, the fuel cost would have been $345, or $6/mi.

Re: [MBZ] anybody have the new DVD version of the EPC?

2005-11-08 Thread Dave M.
Russ,

That's bizarre. I suspect the 'pirated' copies are ones that are
'cracked' and don't use a keygen. The keygen creates a real license
key, same as you would get from MB. I have my EPC and WIS installed at
home, on a PC connected to the internet via broadband. I have no 3rd
party firewall (no ZoneAlarm, etc) just the XP built-in thingy. It's
never asked to connect and I have no idea if it does or not. Works
fine though. It also works on a standalone box that's not connected to
the internet. I think it depends on where you obtained the EPC and
WIS... there may be 'cracked' versions out there that require the
loopback, or that can't be connected to the internet.

The "old" USA-only WIS and EPC have NO problems with this at all.
They're probably still floating around FTP servers, or on eBay...

Re: [MBZ] Running wire from trunk, '93 W124

2005-11-08 Thread J.B. Hebert
The 124 chassis cars have cable channels on either side of the
vehicle running all the way to the trunk. If you remove the seat
bottom, you can see where the channels go under the seat (you will
see vacuum lines for the trunk and gas flap locks, and electrical
wires). You should be able to use these channels for your wire runs.

Re: [MBZ] Oil Sucker mods.

2005-11-08 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

I found changing the oil when too hot w/my topsider caused the larger hose
(the one with the clamp) to collapse, so I changed a few things

Made a solid Aluminum replacement for the hose connector end that fits into
the Topsider (tm) tank. Taped the center with a 1/4 pipe thread and
installed a ball valve. Attached a piece of 3/8 hose to that. At the
other end, used a few fittings to convert the 3/8 hose to 1/4 hose. All
hose (tubing) that I used was high temp clear tygon tubing, so I could see
the oil flow. All the fittings and hose were bought a Home Depot. If
anyone has access to a lathe and wants a dwg of of the insert, let me know.
I'll see if I can dig it out.

Since none of these hoses are collapsable, I can change the oil when the
engine is hot, and flows freely.

Kaleb,

Just got off the phone with Indy. Here's what you have to do.

1. Install Microsoft Loopback Adapter.
2. Disable all other Network Adapters.
3. Start the KeyGen program and Minimize.
4. Start EPC install program.
5. When the install program gets to the screen that has the MAC Address
of the Loopback adapter. Write it down and go back to the KeyGen put the
MAC Addy into the KenGen. You will get a code back. Copy & Past that
number
into the EPC. Chose the Install Options you want.
6. Follow the Instructions from that point on.
_*NOTE*_ If you have a firewall that allows blocking programs from
accessing
the Internet select DENY. The EPC wants to be like ET and Phone Home. If
that happens MB will shut it down.
7. Reboot the computer. Wait at least 5 min before Launching the EPC,
There are
2 services in XP that the EPC needs running before it will start.
Those services
take a few min. to start up.

BTW if you Start EPC and it won't let you access any data or comes up in
German
just shut it down wait a min. or two and restart.
Also if you have the WIS program Install it first. The WIS install procedure
is the same as the EPC.

If this doesn't work let me know.

Re: [MBZ] Oil Sucker Fiasco

2005-11-08 Thread Hans Neureiter
I use an old metal gas can, the round type with the domed top, took the
spring loaded cap off the spout and screwed at the opposite side a 1/2"
compression fitting into the metal.
My 1 gal shopvac hose fits snug inside the pouring spout and a 1/2" black PE
tubing goes from the tubing fitting to the dipstick. To seal the 1/2" OD
tubing to the dipstick, I use a short piece of 5/8" OD Tygon tubing slipped
over the PE which seals inside the dipstick flare and also lets me know when
all the oil is out. Never had a problem with the PE tubing to collapse or
any carry-over to the shop vac. The oil is out in 2 to 3 minutes and than I
let it run for another 10 to 15 to clean up droplets in the oil pan.
All parts are scrounged up from surplus, so a cost estimate is irrelevant.

I don't know exactly when
the original head was replaced, nor when the trap oxidizer recall was
done. If there was an overlap, we could blame the trap for the #17
cracking.

I'm not sure if ALL cracks are indicative of a junk head; I vaguely
recall that the ones from the valve to the prechamber are less of a
problem than the ones between the valve seats, or vice-versa. My head
had both types so I don't know which was causing my cold-high-pressure
symptoms (cured with a #22 head).

Many used OM60x heads will have cracks around the prechamber ports. They
are USUALLY not a problem.

Partition Magic 8 does it - either way!

You said the operative word -- WHEN THEY WERE NEW.

T'aint like that anymore.

It's like me and you -- parts don't work like they used to when they were
new. And I have knees that will "testify" if you want them to.

Re: [MBZ] anybody have the new DVD version of the EPC?

2005-11-08 Thread Russ Williams

Dave,

Don't know about your version, But the one my Indy installed would
not work without the loopback adapter installed. He fought with it for
3 hours.
As for "phoning home" one of the Indies in N.O. told buddy (My Indy)

at a MB Tech Class that he allowed his WIS & EPC to access the internet.
About 2 weeks after he installed it. He launched the EPC to look up a part.
A Screen came up to "WARNING YOU HAVE A PIRATED COPY OF THE EPC" Contact
MBNA for a Legal copy. Same thing for his copy of the WIS. This was on his
home computer w/Broadband connection. His Laptop at work that has the same
EPC and WIS installed and not connected to the Net is still running.

Go Figure.

I've never understood the fascination with the loopback adapter. I
have never needed one (don't even know what one would look like,
lol!). I've also not had any problems with it 'phoning home'. I'm
running XP SP2 with the firewall turned on, but it's never asked me
about allowing any EPC net traffic through. I wonder if all this jazz
is for an older version or something.

Kaleb, do you have the 04/2005 version or a different one? Did the
disc included the 'Read Me' file that I authored (sent a link in a
recent post), or did it have a different installation guide (possible
a MS Word document)?

Russ W.
